The importance of goethite to Australian iron ore production is steadily increasing as the proportion of goethite-rich, martite-goethite bedded and channel iron deposits increases at the expense of declining production from high-grade microplaty hematite deposits. For this reason, an improved understanding of goethite in iron deposits, its genesis, goethite types and their physical and metallurgical properties is vital to maintaining optimum sintering and blast furnace performance in Asian steel mills.The terminology used to describe goethite in Australian iron deposits is currently highly variable. The discredited mineral name ‘limonite’ is still in widespread use as a field term for goethite and there are many misconceptions concerning goethite chemical grade and downstream physical and metallurgical properties. The goethite classification proposed here is based on geological and physical properties from which three types are recognised including brown goethite, dark brown-black vitreous goethite and highly microporous, friable yellow ochreous goethite.In practice, typical vitreous goethite with highly reflective surfaces and conchoidal fracturing, characteristic of the hard cap zone appears from X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and electron microprobe analysis to be significantly higher in Si (up to 18.7 wt per cent), Al (up to 3.5 wt per cent) and S (up to 0.14 wt per cent) compared to the generally very low (<1 wt per cent for Si and Al) levels of these elements in ochreous goethite and brown goethite. The data dispels the common misconception that friable earthy or yellow ochreous goethite is high in Al and Si and other chemical impurities. However, P was found to be consistently higher (mean of 0.112 wt per cent and up to 0.296 wt per cent) in ochreous goethite than brown goethite (mean of 0.011 wt per cent) or vitreous goethite (mean of 0.031 wt per cent). The highly porous microstructure of ochreous goethite is thought to have a much higher surface area, which may aid in preferential adsorption of P onto the ochreous goethite mineral surface.CITATION:Manuel, J R and Clout, J M F, 2017. During the operation of the Parkes process of desilverising, and in the earlier days of the continuous process, gold and silver were removed separately from softened lead bullion. Gold was removed in the Parkes process by a selective zincing, and -in the continuous process by treatment with zinc in a special de-golding kettle, in each case a crust being obtained carrying the gold and a small portion of the silver. Actually the process could have been more correctly termed a de-copperising process, on accountof the relatively large amount of this metal present, and its affinity for zinc, which caused it to enter the crusts produced.The crust was treated in reverberatory furnaces, where the bulk of the copper and zinc was removed in by-products, and the resulting "gold bullion" cupelled to give adore bullion containing approximately 2,000 ounces gold per ton.For the purpose of parting this dore, a small Balbach-Thum plant of 11 cells was used, and once each six months a short campaign was conducted on the accumulated metal.With the development of the process of de-copperising smelter bullion by means of sulphur, when a bullion averaging about .004% copper was constantly available for refining, the need for a separate de-golding process disappeared.The de-golding kettle of the Continuous Process...

The mining industry in Australia frequently uses the services of specialist engineering and managing contractors and consultants for a majority of the work required for project development, from feasibility studies to project commissioning. The project owner's prime objectives are to achieve predictability and competitive advantage for their project. As the majority of this work will be carried out by contractors, the effective evaluation, selection and management of these contractors in the most appropriate forms of contracts is an essential ingredient to project success. The first stage to project development should be for the owner to examine its own resources to establish the role that it will fill and thereby identify the role and scope of contractors' involvement. Once the owner has developed this work plan, the selection of contractors and consultants should be structured to ensure that the owner acquires the appropriate expertise and experience to achieve its project objectives. The sequence of selection procedures is: 1. Pre-qualification of prospective contractors according to the owner's adopted criteria, through the use of a pre-qualification questionnaire. 2. Evaluation by the owner tender board according to predetermined mandatory criteria. 3. Preparation of tender documents for submission to qualified contractors. 4. Evaluation of tender submissions by the owner tender board using a pre-determined, weighted matrix of technical and commercial criteria. 5. Final selection and contract negotiation.

Hazards such as vibration, dust emission and fragment projection can result in an area called the Danger Zone being set around a blasting site. Traditionally Danger Zones have been set solely on the basis of consequences (e.g. based on the maximum distance of rock projection or expected ground vibration plus a defined safety margin). Advances in risk assessment and its growing acceptance as a safety management tool have led to the setting of Danger Zones based on both consequences and frequency of occurrence. This allows distances to be optimised on the basis of acceptable risk levels rather than the potential consequences of infrequent events. THE purpose of this paper is a comparison, based on genesis, of the ore deposits associated with the igneous rocks of the central Montana Rockies. Considered separately, without attention to their origin, the orebodies appear to be distributed haphazard, with no fundamental laws controlling their position and character. It is believed, however, that if all the factors be weighed, this apparent confusion will to a large degree disappear. The, first essential to such a comparison is detailed knowledge of the individual mines, as to their geographic position (see Fig. 1), their mineralogical character, and in particular the derivation of their ores.1 The authors of this paper have pursued such an investigation for the past 6 years, and have accumulated a mass of evidence that enables a preliminary correlation to be attempted. City of Bombay has been developed out of former 7 islands. Landmass of 434 sq.km. of Bombay, started looking inadequate for further growth and expansion of Bombay City. In order to develope twin city of New Bombay, State Government formed fully owned Company "City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra Limited", (CIDCO) in 1971 and entrusted it with planning and development including social and physical infrastructure of New Bombay.Hence, Trans - Thane Creek area is being planned and developed, to serve as counter-magnet to Bombay. Area of 343 sq.km located on the main land, is fast developing into a satellite community, for India's overcrowded financial capital. Thane Creek, running in almost North-South direction, separates Bombay City from main land and posed a significant barrier, to further expansion of city's sprawling suburbs, until, it was bridged for the first time in 1972. On the basis of traffic study, CIDCO decided to construct an additional road link across Thane creek to cope up with future projected traffic. This bridge will connect Airoli in New Bombay and Eastern Express highway near Mulund. Bridging the vast, exposed tidal Thane Creek, have always posed challenging conditions, during constructions of these bridges. In this paper, case history of deep open foundations provided for Airoli Bridge is presented.

Existing buildings sometimes experience excessive settlement under their design loads, or due to increased foundation loading, if a change of building use is required. One of the oldest and widely numerical study has been carried out of a simple idealised problem of an underpinned rigid circular foundation to better understand the behaviour of pile used for underpinning and load transfer mechanism from an existing foundation to the underpinning piles. The finite element method has been used for this analysis, with the soil treated as a two-phase elasto-plastic material. It is found that the effect of the length of the pile becomes more significant as pile length increases. As would be expected, the earlier the pile is installed, the less is the final settlement.

By adding the solid oxalate acid powder into the solution of nickel chloride or its ammonia coordinated solution, the uniform compound particles were prepared and the precipitated particles were transferred to the mono-dispersed NiO particles by calcination. In this study, the various experimental conditions were investigated, the characteristics of the corresponding obtained particles were analyzed, and the formation mechanism of the particles was elucidated. It was found that the solid oxalate acid provided the solid-solution interface for the precipitation and induced the nucleation and growth of the product particles.

This presentation describes a major modernization project at the Geco concentrator. The objectives of the program were to replace obsolete flotation equipment and upgrade process controls.Noranda Minerals Inc. — Gecc Division is located at Manitouwadge in Northern Ontario. The community is situated north of Lake Superior approximately equidistant from Thunder Bay and Sault Ste. Marie.Milling operations began in September, 1957. The mill processes a complex base metal ore by differential flotation techniques to produce copper, lead and zinc concentrates. To date some 43 million tons have been milled, qualifying Geco as a rather major base metal deposit.II. BACKGROUND:The Geco concentrator was designed and constructed in the mid 50's. A number of features specific to a concentrator of that vintage provided the justification for the modernization efforts described herein.Firstly, the mill was constructed without any instrumentation, not even pneumatic controls. Solid state electronics, computers and related instrumentation were unheard of, or rather primitive by today's standards.Secondly, some of the major equipment, in particular the flotation equipment, did not compare favourably to that in use today. MacIntosh flotation machines (more commonly known as Mac cells) were installed at Geco. These cells were prevalent in a number of concentrators built by Noranda, including Quemont Mining Corporation Limited, Gaspe Copper Mines Limited and Noranda — Horne Division. The Mac cells were used for copper and zinc rougher and scavenger operations. Some units were also installed for a pyrite recovery circuit that was never operated. In total, 104 Mac cells were installed in the main flotation area of the concentrator.

Threshold displacement pressures are needed to determine how much overpressure can be used in storing natural gas. An experimental technique for determining threshold pressures by displacing water with gas from samples saturated with water is presented. Threshold pressures for eight low permeability samples were measured. Threshold pressure data obtained in this work, plus data on higher permeability samples reported in the literature, are correlated with porosity, permeability, surface tension and formation resistivity factor. Mercury injection pressures also were measured and correlated with air-water threshold pressures. Threshold pressures were found to be independent of time. An aerial photograph of gas emerging from the top of a core shortly alter its threshold pressure has been exceeded shows that the gas bubbles are uniformly distributed across the face of the core. Channeling will occur, however, when an increased gas phase permeability is reached, A porous medium can be re resealed alter its threshold pressure has been reached, provided it has not been desaturated below a fixed saturation. Its new threshold pressure will be lower than when the sample is 100 percent saturated with water. INTRODUCTION The degree of overpressure in excess of the discovery pressure that a gas storage reservoir can withstand is determined by the ability of its caprock to contain gas, providing the pressure does not exceed the structural limit of the reservoir. The retention of gas in a reservoir by a caprock saturated with water is a result of the capillary forces acting at the gas water interface. Without the presence of water in a caprock, gas would leak out of the reservoir at a rate determined by the permeability of the caprock to gas. The ability of a caprock to contain gas is expressed in terms of its threshold displacement pressure, which is defined as the minimum pressure needed to initiate the displacement of a wetting phase by a nonwetting phase from a porous medium 100 percent saturated with the wetting phase. The gas industry must be able to predict how much "overpressure" a gas reservoir can withstand before leakage occurs by gas displacing water from caprock overlying the reservoir. This is of economic importance since the storage capacity of a gas reservoir is proportional to its pressure. The discovery pressure for most reservoirs is found between the upper and lower limits1 shown in Fig. 1. Discovery pressures in excess of their hydraulic pressure gradient are attributed to the compaction of an isolated shale formation by the overburden.2.3 The lower limit of 0.433 psi/ft corresponds to the weight of the overburden, the gradient of the rock itself. "AustraliaÆs mining sector faces challenges to its competitiveness; operating costs are being adversely affected as a result of volatile commodity prices and growing international market pressures.Diesel fuel-generated power used in typical remote mining projects is generally reliable and quick-to-deploy; however it is ongoing expensive operating cost.Many mines and communities in remote locations source electricity from diesel generation, and often pay over $300/MWh in fuel and carbon only (i.e. excluding CAPEX). These costs are expected to rise over time and are vulnerable to price shock events or supply chain interruptions in international markets.Solar photovoltaic (PV) and other renewables can be integrated with existing diesel units to provide a highly reliable power supply. Such renewables now provide a cheaper source of electricity while maintaining the mining industryÆs stringent reliability requirements; some renewables are now cheaper than diesel power ù supplying electricity at approximately $226/MWh.Also, significant funding and concessional rate financing have recently become available to support the development of remote solar-diesel (or solar-wind-diesel) hybrid systems, including: up to $2.2 billion of as-yet uncommitted grants through the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) and is now seeking mining industry partners, up to $10 billion of concessional financing for emerging renewable technologies through the Clean Energy Finance Corporation (CEFC) and this commences July 2013, ongoing revenue support through the Renewable Energy Target scheme, and other regional support programs administered by various governments.This paper explores: the business case for renewables - what applications and when to consider them, the potential operating cost savings if solar was integrated, the technical challenges and common pitfalls, and how to overcome them, and the upfront investment costs and whether the site is eligible for Government subsidy programs.CITATION:Chambers, C, 2013. The recent mine disasters in Australian coal mines have initiated an introduction of Self-Contained Self-Rescuer (SCSR) as component in the development of new escape strategies for miners. These self-contained self-rescuers are closed circuit, demand sensitive breathing apparatus that make oxygen available to the wearer for a nominal period of time. Their operation is completely independent of the surrounding atmosphere. Once properly donned, the SCSR can assist a miner to escape from an area containing smoke, toxic gases or an oxygen deficient atmosphere. The duration of a typical SCSR is usually taken at the point of complete collapse of the breathing bag which is accompanied by an increase in breathing resistance and inhaled levels of carbon dioxide. Because the oxygen consumption (V02) and the heart rate are correlated, a prediction of V02 and consequently the duration of an SCSR can be made by monitoring the heart rate. Thirty-seven volunteers participated in field simulated escape trials at four underground coal mines. The results from the field trials suggested that oxygen consumption depends on the heart rate, the body weight and exercise rating of the miner. All the volunteers were asked to fill out the questionnaires to evaluate the performance of the units. The miners indicated that they could tolerate the inhaled temperature without any difficulty to breathing resistance. A complete statistical analysis of the field results is also presented.

"INTRODUCTION In a previous reports results were given of a manhole investigation carried out over a period from June,- 1929, to July, 1930, in cooperation with the Edison Electric Illuminating Co. of Boston, Mass., to determine the general hazards of combustible gases and vapors in manholes and other underground openings owned by this company. Considerable time was spent in this initial investigation in developing a suitable detector for determining the range of explosibility of the gases found in manholes. About 17,000 tests have been made with the detector since the investigation was started and its utility has been verified and its accuracy checked, by having complete analyses made of such samples that showed combustibles present equal to or above 25 per cent of the lower explosive limit, and those found deficient in oxygen.The initial investigation made in 1929 and 1930 demonstrated that the detection, control, and elimination of combustible hazards in manholes can best be obtained by a close cooperation of the interested parties through a systematic and continuous inspection of manholes, under proper supervision.COOPERATIVE INVESTIGATI0N DURING 1931The investigation carried out during the year 1931 has been along lines similar to that conducted during 1929 and 1930. In the present investigation the Edison Electric Illuminating Cc. of Boston and the Boston Consolidated Gas Co., have cooperated with the Bureau of lanes. The Boston Consolidated Gas Co. serves a major part of the territory under discussion with gas, but the tests covered the Edison territory irrespective of the gam company furnishing manufactured gas. A test crew consisting of two men, one an employee of the Consolidated Gas Co. and one an employee of the Edison Electric Illuminating Co., has been continuously employed during the year in the testing of games in manholes served by the Edison system. The test crew was under the direct supervision of John Campbell, superintendent of the special service department of the Edison Electric Illuminating Co., and F. M. Goodwin vice president of the Consolidated Gas Co.As in the previous investigation, all manhole tests were given test numbers. The test data sheets on which the information regarding the tests were recorded were prepared in triplicate, one copy going to the Edison Company, one going to the Gas company, and the third to the Bureau of Mines at Pittsburgh. These test data sheets were then filed (1) according to the town, (2) the street location, and (3) the manhole number; in this way a complete record pf each manhole tested was immediately available. "Gas dispersion studies have been used to benchmark and optimize plant flotation performance for more than a decade, although this technology is not as widely in use as it likely should be based on the significant improvements that have been reported. Part of the reason may be a general lack of awareness within the industry of just what these improvements have been. This paper reviews a number of the reported case studies, groups them into categories of improvement, and draws some general conclusions. The paper will be of interest to plant engineers and technology providers seeking new approaches and tools for improving their own and clients’ processes.INTRODUCTIONThe sector of flotation hydrodynamics that is now known as gas dispersion technology, and the corresponding terminology, had its beginnings in the 1980’s and early 1990’s in the laboratories of McGill University where the students of Prof. J.A. Finch and Dr. C. Gomez conducted studies of gas holdup, superficial gas rate and water recovery on laboratory flotation columns (Laplante et al., 1983; Xu et al., 1991;, Banisi and Finch, 1994; Finch et al., 1999; Nesset, 2011). Sensors were developed for gas holdup (eg), gas rate (Jg) and bubble size (Db) distribution (Tavera et al., 1996: Finch et al., 1999; Dahlke et al., 2001; Chen at al., 2001; Hernandez-Aguilar et al, 2002, 2005). The sensor measurements were rapidly adapted for use in mechanical flotation machines in plant environments (Gomez and Finch, 2002; Gomez et al., 2003; Cooper et al, 2004; Torrealba-Vargas et al, 2004; Nesset et al., 2007). Somewhat parallel developments were being conducted by Gorain and colleagues at the University of Queensland’s JKMRC on pilot and industrial flotation machines using the McGill approach but utilizing alternate sensor designs for eg, Jg and Db (Gorain et al., 1997, 1999; Schwarz and Alexander, 2006) to link flotation kinetics to bubble surface area flux (Sb). Early industrial applications were those led by the university teams from McGill (Canada), the JKMRC (Australia) and the University of Santa Maria (Chile) at plants in North and South America, Australia, South Africa, Asia and Europe. Industrial organizations that brought the technology on-board in the early 2000’s included Teck Resources (then Teck Cominco), COREM, Vale (then Inco), Anglo American Platinum. Several of the major flotation cell manufacturers also purchased the McGill bubble viewer technology for their own equipment studies. The sensors have continued to evolve with multiple and continuous measurement of Jg (Torrealba-Vargas and Finch, 2006, Bartolacci et al., 2008), gas holdup by acoustic means (O’Keefe, 2007) and a combined Jg-Db device called the Anglo Bubble Sizer (Harbort and Schwarz, 2010). A review of the gas dispersion technology use and development have been provided by Gomez and Finch (2002), Harbort and Schwarz (2010) and Nesset (2010)."

Explosive manufacturers have for many years provided a service to the mining industry which has,until recently, been unchallenged by mine operators. Today mine operators are more aware of the properties of explosives required to perform particular tasks within their operations. These properties can be reliably quantified using the test procedures described in this paper for emulsion adn ANFO based explosives. Details of an end-user sampling programme desgined to provide quality checks on explosives supplied to a mine site are also discussed.

Many excavation and loading tasks require equipment operators to simultaneously coordinate the motion of multiple machine links, in order to achieve complex tool trajectories. Efficiency, ore selectivity, and machine wear, are all affected by the skill level and attentiveness of the operator. A software-based kinematics reconfiguration system designed to assist operators with various tasks has been implemented on a small experimental excavator using our new differential control architecture. Kinematics transformation and feedback control algorithms are being developed and tested using computer simulation, and the results implemented on the experimental excavator. Several task-specific kinematics transformations, including a virtual revolute-to-Cartesian machine reconfiguration and computer-assisted bucket steering and stabilization have been successfully tested. Progress, challenges, results, expected benefits, and planned work are described.

Digital Simulation of Particulate Processes The inherent complexity of mineral particulates (shape, size and mineralogical texture) has challenged conventional simulation model approaches for decades. Much effort was expedited in using mathematical assumptions to accommodate stereological effect. With the advance of instrumental methods such as x-ray microtomography 3D structure can, in many cases, be measured directly. The information derived from such measurements provides direct input to building the structural digital model. In addition digital simulation methods that enable creation of process realistic particulate properties in an efficient digital computer space have demonstrated their effectiveness to model a variety of realistic packing, sorting and multi-phase processes. The paper reviews recent advances in the use of information derived from 3D micro-tomographic imaging and laser scanning technology can be coupled with digital methods to enable simulation of tablet compaction and dissolution, filtration and permeability, column packing and leaching kinetics, packing and cementation of nuclear waste. By assigning 'properties' to a digital zone (voxel) in the computational space it is possible to mimic the realistic characteristics of quite complex particulate mineral processing systems. The system self-adapts to correct the coherent particle characteristics (shape, size, compound, porosity) with time. Such simulations are useful to elucidate the sensitivity of system performance to variations in process parameters. Dimensional scaling of the approach is also possible, as the case studies will illustrate, in deploying the method to both small (micron) and large (m) features. The use of process realistic simulations presents experimental challenges in code validation. It is in this context that other tomographic methods play a role in direct 3D measurement of system behaviour such as electrical and optical sensors.

The maximum net return from the sale of ores and concentrates of gold, silver, copper, lead, and zinc accrues to the producer when these mine products are marketed to the best advantage. Data are presented that the producer, especially the small mine operator, can use to survey available markets and make a preliminary estimate of the net return to be expected from an ore, on the basis of typical mill, smelter, and freight schedules. A review of the industry is presented by States in which recent production statistics are given, marketing facilities are discussed, and locations of principal mining districts, custom mills, and smelters are shown. Explanations of treatment processes, ore types, treatment charges, payments for metals, and deductions are given. Published rail and truck freight rates for mine products, based on marketing patterns developed over many years, are listed and explained.

The Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) is the largest international geoscience project in the world, and the state-of-the-art drill ship, the JOIDES Resolution, is permanently at sea. Each year there are six scientific cruises (legs) which each last approximately two months. These legs are designed by geoscientists from the nineteen countries that subscribe to ODP.Australia and Canada presently share ODP membership under the banner of the AUSCAN Consortium. The benefits of Australia's involvement in ODP include internationalisation of Australian geoscience, advanced graduate training, and unique scientific investigations of the ocean floors in the Australasian region. In addition, visits to Australian ports by the ODP drill ship, the JOIDES Resolution, contribute up to $2 million per visit to the local economy. Amongst the many other aspects of ten years of scientific drilling, OOP has significantly contributed to our understanding of hydrothermal processes on the seafloor. To date, three hydrothermal sites have been drilled to date by the OOP, Snakepit (MAR), Middle Valley (Juan de Fuca Ridge) and TAG (MAR). Two more hydrothermal sites are scheduled for 1996.

As the theme of this conference is æRediscover OtagoÆ it would seem appropriate to revisit the era of the gold rushes and subsequent mining industry which rapidly advanced settlement and economic prosperity for Otago, and left permanent reminders in the form of historic mining sites, many of which are now encompassed within the Otago Goldfields Park. I have been invited to give a paper at this conference on the subject of æHistoric Goldfields of Central OtagoÆ. As well as having a working involvement with historic areas through my employment with the Department of Conservation, I have a personal interest in the early goldmining industry of Central Otago as my grandfather came out from Scotland in the 1890s to help construct gold dredges on the Molyneux. My grandfather made headlines in the local paper in 1920 when he believed he saw a New Zealand otter at Island Block near Beaumont - but that's another conservation trail that I will not pursue any further today! For this paper I intend to divide my time to cover the following topics. Firstly, I would like to sketch a mental picture of the characteristics that make up the Central Otago landscape, and the general perception that early miners must have had when viewing this foreign land. Then I would like to briefly discuss the changes and the consequences in the early gold rush to Central. Finally, I would like+ to discuss the establishment of the Otago Goldfields Park, which I will illustrate with several slides.
