Tougher physical mining and processing conditions as well as economic circumstances are causing many mining companies to re-evaluate the effectiveness of their mine planning. The recent wave of inexpensive computing power provides the engineer an opportunity to go beyond the simple one-off manual mine design and production schedule. The basis of a good mine plan is a good reserves model. Concepts of mine model development are explored. The only advanced computer methods that have found consistent success in optimising mine planning functions are economic pit limits determination and material scheduling. Three pit 'optimisation' methods are examined; the moving cone, the Lerchs-Grossman 3-D graph algorithm, and the new network flow algorithm. A comparison between the methods in terms of total profits generated and computer time involved are made. The results show that both algorithms produced a higher profitability than the simple moving cone, but at much higher execution times. However, the profit increase never exceeded much more than 1 % of the base moving cone case. Finally, a method for the development of long range material production schedules with forward waste planning is presented.

The present U.S. production of bromine is from inland brines located in Arkansas and Michigan. The most concentrated domestic brines (up to 5,000 ppm bromide)are situated in Arkansas. Less concentrated brines(about 2,500 ppm bromide) are located in Michigan. The amount of bromine sold or used in the United States came from three companies operating in those two states. Its value was $191 million. In 2004, the estimated U.S. bromine production was 222 kt (244,000 st). That compared with 216 kt (238,000st) produced in 2003.

"Huckleberry Mines Ltd is an open pit porphyry copper-molybdenum mining operation located 120 km south of Houston, British Columbia with a 18,000 tpd milling facility. Huckleberry Mines is owned 60% by Princeton Mining Corporation, the operator, and 40% by Japanese partners.The Huckleberry deposit is one of several porphyry systems located in the Tahts a district of the intermontane belt of British Columbia. The principal economic minerals are chalcopyrite and molybdenite. The ore deposit is split into two ore deposits, the Main Zone, consisting of24,241,000 tonnes of mineable reserves grading 0.484 %Cu and 0.013 %Mo, and the East Zone, consisting of 66, 131,500 tonnes of mineable reserves grading 0.523 %Cu and 0.014 %Mo.The milling begins with gyratory crushing. This sizes the product down to 100% passing 6 inches. This product is discharged onto a stockpile by a stationary conveyor. The stockpile was designed for a capacity of 144,000 tonnes with a live capacity of 20,000 tonnes. Two apron feeders draw the ore from the bottom of the stockpile and discharge onto a SAG mill feed conveyor which in turn feeds a grinding circuit consisting of one 32' x 15' SAG mill and two 30' x 16.5' ball mills. The grinding cyclone overflow feeds bulk flotation at 55 -65% minus 200 mesh.The bulk flotation uses conventional rougher and column flotation methods to float a bulk concentrate recovering 92.6% copper on the East Zone and 95% copper on the Main Zone with 75% recovery molybdenum on both zones. The bulk concentrate feeds the bulk thickener which produces a density of 60 %solids. This in turn feeds the molybdenum circuit, which separates the copper and molybdenum, by depressing the copper then using conventional rougher and column flotation produces a copper concentrate of 27 %Cu and 0.02 %Mo, and a molybdenum concentrate containing 1.5 %Cu and 54 %Mo at 67% recovery. These concentrates are separately thickened, filtered, dried, and shipped to the smelter for processing."

The Woodbury L-73 Tunnel involved the design and construction of a 96-inch tunnel driven through 8,080 lf of very difficult ground conditions. Anticipated ground and groundwater conditions consisted of potentially flowing silty sand with cobbles and boulders, mixed face of sand and sandstone and full face of the St. Peter Sandstone. Actual conditions were similar, although the quantities did change from bid quantities. This paper presents the approach used for development of the GBR regarding risk management. The means of arriving at a fair compensation for variances from the baseline values to address the actual encountered tunneling behavior of the soil, boulder count and its effect on production rates are presented.

The purpose of this report is to chronicle the interaction between Anglo Platinum and Sandvik Tamrock during the development and application of Long Hole drilling as a viable, practical method of narrow reef mining. Appendix I identifies the people from Anglo Platinum and Sandvik Tamrock who participated in the project. Experiments in long hole drilling and blasting were conducted in a number of mines during the late 1950s and early 1960s. Some of the advantages envisaged were: ? The face would require no daily examination ? No barring down or immediate face support required ? No sockets to clean ? Only a few well drilled holes rather than large numbers of short blast holes ? Avoidance of poorly-marked holes, inaccurate drilling and improper charging ? Better supervision and better face advance. Holes 50 mm in diameter were drilled parallel to the stope face by pneumatic rock drills from advance strike gullies. Holes were charged with amon gelignite cartridges. All holes were traced with detonating cord to ensure propagation of the explosive along the entire hole length. Rock was blasted onto a rolling scatter pile. A number of reasons have been cited for the failure of this mining method. The two most important were: ? problems in controlling hole deviation which was exacerbated by the fractured ground ? difficulty of charging up holes in fractured ground, due to relative movement of rocks along fracture surfaces over the hole length. The idea of drilling a few long holes parallel to the face rather than a large number of short blast holes perpendicular to the face was an attractive option to mechanize narrow reef mining. This particular project started in 1998. Initial trial The Union Section of Anglo Platinum purchased a Solo H 606 RA long hole drilling rig from Sandvik Tamrock in 1997. In order to evaluate long hole drilling as a basis for face mechanization. The Solo series of drill rig was selected because it combines high drilling performance and good drilling accuracy with high versatility with a compact size. The mining method proposed by a consultant to Anglo Platinum was based on the current trackless mining method practised by Union Section. The trackless mining method is better described as a trackless development and transport method. Reef strike drives were installed approximately 40 metres apart on dip using trackless equipment. Reef was mined using hand-held pneumatic rock drills and scraper winches and the excavation was supported by sticks and crush pillars at the top of the panel. Rock scraped from the panel was loaded by Lad Haul Dumps (LHDs), trammed to an inclined haulage, and loaded into trucks for transport to the surface. It was intended that the Solo would drill from the bottom advance strike drive to the top advance strike drive. Blasted rock would still have to be scraped from the panel. It is also difficult to understand how well the support would have survived. In the initial motivation it was stated that drilling accuracy was of the utmost importance. Previous work by Sandvik Tamrock had shown that, in other parts of the world, 20 metre long holes could be drilled with a deviation not exceeding 100 mm provided that: ? holes were collared with low thrust pressure ? operating percussion pressure was kept low -often not ? exceeding 10 MPa ? drilling was to be with tubes, not rods. In early 1998 initial trials with the Solo H 606 RA were inconclusive; attempts were made to drill 40 metre long holes from one advance strike drive to another. Difficulty was experienced in measuring hole straightness and accuracy, there was no survey of the holes, and no blasting was done to expose hole barrels. A long hole mining system was then defined, with a corresponding face mining system, which led to the design of a test programme for the Solo drilling rig. Earlier experience at Telfer The proposed face mining system was based on a mining method that is practised at Telfer Gold Mine in Western Australia. Telfer has a series of domed reefs that dip at angles of less than 20° to more than 40°. The ore bodies are all thin, with widths from 0.6 metres to 0.8 metres. Figure 1 shows the face layout. Experience at Telfer indicated the following: ? The spacing and size of the dip pillars should be based on the rock mechanics of Union Section ? The length of the face is determined by the ability to correctly position the blast holes. Positioning of blast holes is a function of hole straightness and hole direction. Blast holes in Telfer were drilled 64 mm diameter with retrac bits from Sandvik. Extension steel was T38 by 1.8 metre lengths. A guide rod was fitted immediately behind the bit. To achieve greater accuracy' operators drill at relatively low percussion and thrust pressures. Results show that very good accuracy is achieved in 20 metre stopes and only fair accuracy in longer stopes. It is generally recognised that slags are active participants in pyrometallurgical processes, and not merely inert liquids which must be produced. to effect separation of gangue material in smelting, or of impurities in refining. The importance attached to slag-metal reactions in steelmaking is shown by the numerous investigations in this field. However, there are still many important reactions of slags which require explanation. The main role of slag in oxygen converter processes is to absorb the non-volatile oxidation products of hot metal impurities, Si, P, Mn, Ti, V, etc. The importance of converter slag as deP and de Smedia has ceased with implementation of special pre- and post-converter treatments. The transfer from top blowing (LD) to combined blowing converters has decreased the amount of slagged iron that, together with the tendency towards lower silicon and manganese contents, has decreased slag to steel ratio. Still the control of slag forming and behaviour during the blow is of great importance. In this paper the thermodynamics of the slag forming reactions, the role of slag in the modern oxygen converter process for impurity elimination, splashing, lining wear, dust formation and post combustion are discussed on the basis of common knowledge and experience of Finnish steel plants.

The development of a noise attenuated compressed air driven fan is described. The fan, which employs the jet reaction principle, possesses blade extension pieces which penetrate into an acoustically treated annular chamber. The dominant noise source, namely the air jets, is thereby partially suppressed. In addition, the increased moment arm of the jets leads to an improved propulsion effect which contributes to the improved aerodynamic performance of the unit.A typical measure of the improvement of this type of auxiliary mine ventilation unit is a 4 per cent increase in efficiency and a 10 dB (A) drop in sound level for a fan duty of 0·5 kPa and 1600 litre/s. This degree ofattenuation corresponds to at least halving the loudness level, a subjective noise measure.

"Haile Gold Mine is located near Kershaw, South Carolina, approximately 50 miles south of Charlotte, North Carolina. Gold was first discovered at the site in 1827, and the property has been through several operating periods since. The relatively low grade and refractory nature of the deposit has been a challenge for efficient processing since the start of mining on the property. Early processing techniques included gravity separation and barrel chlorination. The last operation employed heap leaching in 1985 through 1992. After being closed and reclaimed for over 20 years, the property is poised to re-open and produce once again. In this chapter of the Mine’s legacy, flotation and ultra-fine grinding will be employed to achieve economic extraction of gold and silver from the pyrite. This paper briefly reviews some of the mine’s history, the metallurgical testing, the flowsheet and discusses design considerations.INTRODUCTIONHaile Gold Mine is located near Kershaw, South Carolina, approximately 50 miles south of Charlotte, North Carolina. Romarco Minerals acquired the property in 2007, and began an exploration program that has delineated over 62 tonnes (+2M ozs.) of gold in reserve at an overall grade of 2 ppm (0.06 opt). This paper provides a brief history of the property, a summary of metallurgical testing, description of the process flowsheet and discusses design considerations.HISTORY1827 – 1837Gold was discovered in creek beds on the Haile property in 1827. The property was owned by Benjamin Haile, and the first few years of production came from placer mining. After gold was discovered in schist beds to the sides of the streams, Haile expanded the operation by leasing 18 meter-square (50 ft.) plots to local planters. These planters used slaves to work the small excavations in the agricultural offseason. The gold ore was taken to arrastras where the free gold was liberated and recovered. The excavations were above the water table, generally less than 18 meters (60 ft.) down, and it was noted then that gold could be found embedded in sulfides and difficult to extract."

Improvements continue to be made in rapid excavation and tunneling technology. There are several ways to examine the impacts of such improvements. The most common procedure is to monitor current developments and to evaluate prospects for expansion of present types of uses. Other approaches are called for, however, if the technology might be used in ways not now imagined, if the search is for information for managers of technology development, and if the issue is that of the wise use of the technology by society. The first section of the paper will pose these matters as questions. These questions will be examined from the point of view of the processes of technology development and utilization, and then further examined against the backdrop of processes at work within the urban area. Such an examination will provide insight into the way technology developments should proceed. The final section will present some comments that may be useful to those guiding the development of the technology and to those who might provide leadership for its wise utilization. THE QUESTIONS Three questions are posed: 1. Are there uses for the technology beyond further penetrations of its present markets? 2. Can information be supplied to managers of technology development so that they may improve the assignment of priorities among development choices? 3. How can society make wiser use of the technology?

Low-cost hydroelectric energy in the Pacific Nortnwest has been an important factor in the development of a ferroalloy industry. Eleven companies, employing approximately 1,000 persons, produce about 116,000 tons (1954-58 average) annually of ferrosilicon, ferrochromium, ferromanganese, ferrophosphorus, silicomanganese, and ferronickel. About 7,500 tons (1954-58 average) of these ferroalloys is consumed in the Pacific Northwest States of Washington and Oregon; the rest is used principally in other western and mid-western markets. In 1959, the Bureau of Mines began a study to determine the current status and to evaluate the potential of the ferroalloy industry in the Pacific Northwest. The Bureau gathered information from operating alloy plants in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Montana; from published materials; and from consumers of ferroalloys.

A combined reflection seismic and magnetic survey off the south coast of New South Wales has revealed six distinct reflection horizons within the Lower Triassic-Upper Permian sequence, and has enabled the upper part of the lllawarra Coal Measures to be mapped in considerable detail. Large magnetic anomalies in the eastern half of the survey area appear to originate in the Gerringong Volcanic Sequence which forms the magnetic basement in the survey. Small residual anomalies in the western half of the area can be correlated with small scale faulting and folding in the upper part of the llawarra Coal Measures, as revealed by the seismic reflection survey.A synclinal axis striking at approximately 55° has been mapped near the western margin of the survey area, and areas of faulting and folding have been outlined by combined analysis of seismic and magnetic results.

The research described in the paper was aimed at providing standardized information of cases of failed and intact coal pillars in the form of databases to researchers. It also offered the opportunity to take stock of the pillar stability situation in coalmining and to review the impact of the application of the safety factor formula for pillar design. It was found that the physical parameters of coalmining have not changed substantially over the last four decades. However, changes in the controllable parameters like pillar width, pillar width-to-height ratio and percentage extraction have all moved toward the more conservative side. Scrutiny of the database indicates that of all the failures recorded, only 23 occurred in panels that were mined after 1969, when one can assume that the safety factor formula was fully applied. If the pre-1969 practices had been continued, at least 144 collapses would have been expected. There has thus been a substantial reduction of pillar collapse cases, justifying the cost paid for the formula, which has shown to be in the region of 600 million tons of coal. It is evident that that are distinct differences in the natures of the failures among different coalfields. This justifies the attempts to derive seam or coal field specific strength formulae and is a topic that should be pursued.

Tiedback walls are now recognized and accepted as a good solution for a variety of structural problems: ? Retaining Walls and Bridge Abutments in cut situations ? Landslide stabilization ? Repair/support of existing walls Acceptable techniques have been developed for anchoring in cohesive and granular soils and in any kind of rock. Methods have been developed for adequately protecting tieback tendons against corrosion and for testing every tieback to verify its long-term load-carrying capacity. However, the major problem that the industry faces today is how do we get constructable and economical tiedback walls contracted for and built with minimal claims. This paper will explore the issue of "constructability" through a look at specific problems from actual projects. From a research report from the Construction Industry Institute, Austin, Texas (1986), constructability is defined "as the optimum use of construction knowledge and experience in planning, design, procurement and field/operations to achieve overall project objectives." Maximum benefits occur when people with construction knowledge and experience become involved at the very beginning of the project." The design and installation of tiebacks has been developed primarily by specialty contractors; each contractor has evolved its own methods of performing the work, and consequently, many of the techniques are patented and proprietary. The real question is, how do we make effective use of this knowledge and experience during the design phase of the project?

The use of aircraft to support blasting operations in mines, quarries and construction sites goes back to the early days of aviation. Invaluable at times, aircraft use has been limited by cost, the unpredictability of weather impacts and other factors. Recently several technologies have matured to open up a new way to acquire aerial data with unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), commonly called drones. Equally important, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration has recently implemented an exemption process and rulemaking to implement the commercial use of UAS into the United States’ National Airspace. The skies are opening for many applications of UAS. The most notable may be photogrammetry, which is the science of making measurements from photographs, especially for determining the exact positions of surface points.

The process of longwall coal extraction coal causes fractures in the overlying and underlying strata and these fractures become pathways for gas released from adjacent coal seams to flow into the mine workings and contaminate the ventilation air. If the rate of gas emission exceeds the diluting capacity of the ventilation air, the gas concentration will increase and exceed the statutory limit resulting in production delays.All potential gas sources within the planned mining area, including coal seams located above and below the working seam, should be identified and sufficient gas data collected and used to determine the specific gas emission from each gas source. Gas reservoir and emission modelling is recommended to determine specific gas emission and changes in gas emission from individual sources over the planned mining area. Accurate gas reservoir and emission modelling provides the information required to accurately design gas drainage programs to effectively manage gas emissions and minimise the risk of ‘gas-outs’.Given the increasing occurrence of incidents of gas concentration in ventilation air exceeding the 2.0 per cent statutory limit and changes to mine plans to avoid ‘difficult-to-drain’ areas, it is apparent that many operations are not effectively utilising gas reservoir and emission modelling to identify high gas emission areas and are not completing sufficient gas drainage in advance of planned mining.The process of gas reservoir and emission modelling to support gas drainage design to control tailgate gas concentration and fugitive emissions is presented and discussed.CITATION:Black, D J, 2017. Underground Mine Drainage may be conveniently divided into two operations:(a) Collecting and transporting drainage water to the pump eastern.(b) Elevating water to the surfacc by pumping.This short paper describes a system which automatically performs operation "a" and which has been developed on the South mine at Broken Hill, under the supervision of the mine foreman, Mr. F. McDonell. With the employment of a system of ore pillars to support the hanging wall during the mining operations at the North Mine, it was found that, when the stopes were worked out and the pillars remained intact, the main footwall drives developed an undulating longitudinal section due to the shrinkage of the filling in the worked out stopes.These depressions collected water, which made the footwall drives very wet under foot, and everitually worked its way into the pillar workings and the levels below.Water was also finding its way into the shafts because of the silting-up of the level drainage systems and, as both the shafts are down-cast, this tended to increase the humidity of the air entering the mine.To overcome these troubles it was decided to try a system of siphons as a method of subsidiary drainage.SYSTEM AT PRESENT IN USE.All drainage water is collected as near to its source as possible, run into a sump in an adjacent low lying part of the level, and continuously removed from these sumps by a siphon system.Each level has its own system.
