Worldwide minerals exploration slipped in 1992 from 1991 levels. Although industrial production figures showed the US economy emerging from recession in early 1992, it was not until February 1993 that the lagging indicator of unemployment dropped to 7%. Most other industrialized countries are still in recession. Preliminary data for 1992 showed industrial production dropping in Japan (5%), Germany (1.4%), the United Kingdom (0.5%) and France (1.4%). The slowdown in industrial production led to reduced mineral demand. This resulted in lean cash flows from mining operations, which squeezed exploration funding. Although mineral prices were steady during most of 1992, some mineral commodity prices began falling in late 1992 and early this year. Exploration 1991-1992 According to Metals Economics Group (MEG), planned 1992 exploration expenditures were down by about 5%. Geographically, the leading exploration target was the United States with 21 % of the expenditures, followed by Australia (19%), Canada (18%), Latin America (15%), South Africa (9%) and the western Pacific (7.5%). The remaining 10% was split between Europe and Africa. There were absolute increases in exploration expenditures in the United States and Latin America. Latin America showed the largest increase. The change in the Mexican mining law allowing foreign ownership of mines should result in the inflow of direct foreign investment in Mexico's mining industry.

This paper presents the metallurgical results of column and stockpile leach tests with forced aeration to determine the usefulness of this process in the operational leaching at Sociedad Minera Cerro Verde S.A.A. The evolution of the aeration system is presented and also an innovative solution developed to overcome forced aeration’s main problem, which is the early obstruction of the aeration pipes located at the base of the stockpile, causing a decrease in air and oxygen levels and therefore a reduction in the metallurgical benefits.

The alkaline ethylenediamine tetra-acetic acid (EDTA) leach process for extracting tungsten from scheelite (CaW04) ores has been examined for the treatment of low grade (<0.5 per cent WO,) residue dumps. The process has been considerably simplified by applying solvent extraction directly to the leach liquor.Ammonium paratungstate is thereby produced in a one step process and this obviates the need to physically recover EDTA prior to recycling. This modified process should be an economical method of tungsten extraction.

At the exploration stage for new mining projects or for medium- and long-term areas of existing mines (typical of South African gold mines), drilling data is on a relatively large grid. This grid is normally larger than the selective mining units (SMUs). Direct estimates for the SMUs and also of much larger block units will then be smoothed due to the information effect and the high error variance. Any capital-intensive project decisions made on the basis of any of the smoothed estimates will tend to misrepresent the economic value of the project or operation, i.e. the average grade of blocks above cut-off will be underestimated and the tonnage overestimated for cut-off grades below the mean grade of the orebody. This paper presents a direct approach technique for deriving recoverable resources, referred to as localized direct conditioning (LDC), designed to correct smoothing effects and also to provide support corrections.

INVESTIGATIONS IN 1936In 1936 the Industrial Pulmonary Disease Committee of the Medical Research Council investigated both clinically and radiologically a group of fifty workers who had been exposed for a number of years to the inhalation of alumina in the reduction factory of the British Aluminium Company. The results are shown in Table 1.They also considered the sickness records of all the workers (Hill, 1936), as compared with those in other parts of the factory (Table 2).

Kalgoorlie is the main mining centre of the Western Australian Goldfields. Its famous Golden Mile' has been noted for the exceptional width and richness of its goldtelluride lodes. Since the mid-1890s production on the major mines has been maintained practically continuously.Rich ore, though not as plentiful or as rich as formerly, is still (1948) being mined in places. Unexplored areas still remain within the main auriferous belt which offer reasonable chances of success with intensive exploration.Much detailed information has accumulated in recent years through the geological mapping of underground workings by some of the larger mining companies. The purpose of this paper is to correlate observations made in most of the accessible old and recent workings in the mines of the Lake View and Star group and elsewhere.GENERAL GEOLOGYRock TypesThe rock formations are:-1. Fine-grained (older) greenstones, locally referred to as calc schists. There were originally pillow lavas and other flow rocks of basic composition, now extensively chloritised and/or carbonated. Pillows and fragmental flow- tops are recognisable. Intercalated with flows near the top of the series are several beds of sediments.2. Graphitic slates and other more arenaceous sediments.Although referred to as slates, they are rarely more than well-bedded shales with poorly developed fracture cleavage:Thick bands of felsitic rock are found in places.

Among the pile foundations of the 156 tall buildings over 18 storeys in Shenzhen, 86. 5% of them are constructed by slurry drilled piles, bored piles and excavated piles (hand-dug caissons). Based on the experiences of the engineering practices, the paper points out that the main quality problems of pile foundations in Shenzhen are: insufficient bearing capacity of single pile; poor concrete quality of pile; damage of the precast pile; pile tip not reaching the required bearing stratum and the thickness of bored/drilled sediment exceeding the specified. etc. The quality inspection methods that have been used include: check of construction records and excavating; static loading test; core sampling test; non-destructive test, etc. Treatments of quality problems used in Shenzhen are also introduced in this paper.

Carbon as a reductant, additive or filler is an essential element in the processing of metallic ores and the manufacture of iron and steel in the metallurgical industry. In most cases, the element carbon is derived from coal and its carbon derivatives. The properties of carbon required for the different processes in each metallurgical sector vary significantly and, for this reason, matching the correct carbon product for each specific process has become an important if not vital function in all sectors of this industry. This selection process, however, has become increasingly difficult. In many cases, the substitution of new products, despite being similar in all relevant chemical specification characteristics to previous products, has resulted in different performance properties relative to that expected. Under these circumstances, the prediction of performance of unknown carbon products has become fraught with difficulties unprecedented in the past. In order to initiate an investigation into addressing these issues, a test case was selected for indepth study the results of which are reported in this paper. The case concerned the use of a specific carbon feed in a conventional submerged arc furnace which gave rise to an unprecedented amount of unreacted or only partially consumed residue trapped in the frozen slag on the refractory walls of the furnace. During the course of these investigations, different advanced analytical technologies were employed including, inter alia, Raman spectroscopy, surface dimensional tests, organic petrology and various thermal reactivity factors. All results have been integrated into a multidisciplinary assessment presented in summary in this paper. Based on the above, and previous experience, the concept of an all-embracing 3-D coal-carbon ?framework? is briefly introduced. This approach has succeeded in obtaining greater depth of knowledge and a better understanding of the issues at stake with specific reference to the organic composition, structure, texture, internal surface area and consequent reactivity of the carbon materials concerned. In consequence, it would now appear that various properties of relevance to the metallurgical industry may be predicted with greater precision than has hitherto fore been possible.

Aggressive driving patterns, rough and poorly maintained roads and pit floors, along with the occasional bump and poorly placed load from a shovel can create intense and sometimes serious vibration levels on a heavy hauler. The effects of high vibration have been shown to be of concern for the health of the operator as well as the reliability of the equipment. It is proposed that an onboard vibration warning system based on the ISO 2631-1 standard could be used to help operators reduce the vibration levels experienced in a heavy hauler. The onboard system would consist of a screen that displays the instantaneous vibration in the form of three lights: green (safe zone), yellow (cautious zone), and red (danger zone), as well as an overall vibration exposure or dose for the entire shift. With the utilization of the warning system, it is anticipated that the overall vibration levels will be decreased resulting in improved operator health, a reduction of vibration-induced maintenance, and improved haul roads through reduced impact loading and repair for localized trouble areas.

Elongates are commonly used as stope support in South African gold and platinum mines. To evaluate the effect of the inherent strength, stiffness and yield variability associated with elongates, a statistical method is presented which addresses and quantifies the support performance at various levels of certainty. The analysis, which is based on a normal distribution, makes use of force-deformation curves determined from multiple laboratory compression tests on the same support type. The applicability of the method is illustrated making use of actual performance capabilities of various types of elongates. In order to ensure a high probability that support units installed underground exceed the standard support performance curve established by means of laboratory tests, the statistical mean of a suite of tests based on the same support type is downgraded. The ?correction factor? is a function of the mean and standard deviation of the test data, as well as the sample size of units deemed to control the local rock mass stability. It is shown that downgraded performance curves based on a high probability (90 to 95percent) of support units exceeding this performance level are suitable to ensure that the design of support systems will in variably meet the design criteria. In the highly discontinuous hangingwall rock mass typically associated with intermediate- and deep-level mining operations, the interaction between adjacent support units is comparatively limited (at the support spacings commonly used). Therefore, the appropriate sample size (n) of the support units controlling the local rock mass stability should be n= 1. In shallow mining conditions, sample sizes of up to n=5 may be warranted, depending on the spacing of joints and other discontinuities in the hangingwall.

Part of the Imittos Western Peripheral Motorway in Athens is the twin road tunnel in the vicinity of American College, with 20m excavation diameter. In the paper, the environmental and other requirements, the geometry and the geological – geotechnical characteristics of the rock formations in the construction area are given. Information regarding the modeling and analysis methods that are used for the design of the temporary support, the final lining and the wedge and slope stability analysis is described thoroughly. Finally, the results of the analyses are compared with these of measurements and general remarks during the construction of the tunnels.

The Mongol-Okhotsk belt consists of detached fragments of the Circum Pacific fold belt which have been trapped within the Mongol-Okhotsk fold belt. In its western part, the structures of the belt form an east-facing loop that is not connected with the other orogenic structures of Central Asia. In the eastern part of the belt (the Mongol-Okhotsk suture zone) the terranes form a zone between the Siberian craton to the north and the Bureya composite terrane to the south, that is linked with the Circum Pacific belt. The accretionary terranes, together with their Precambrian backstops, form a series of consistently-stacked, paired units that are bounded by northwest and north trending sinistral strike-slip faults. The ages of the rocks forming these accretionary complexes vary from Late Precambrian - Carboniferous in the west to Cambrian - Jurassic in the east. The terranes developed due to a progressive westward stacking of the accretionary complexes during the process of accretionary growth. The magmatic rocks young eastward indicating that migration of the magmatic front of the arc followed the eastward growth of the accretionary complexes. The accretionary terranes may be differentiated by their Paleozoic lithological assemblages. Only the Selemdzha, Niman, and Kerbi terranes located in the eastern part of the Mongol-Okhotsk suture zone contain significant amounts of black shale, and it is these terranes that host the bulk of the hardrock and placer gold mineralisation that is present within the suture zone. Gold mineralisation is present both as vein style and disseminated mineralisation within structural duplexes.

In January we published a questionnaire asking about the content of MINING ENGINEERING and about your interests. At the same time we hired an outside firm, READEX Inc., of St. Paul, MN, to send the same questionnaire to a sampling of about 1000 US members, selected on an nth name basis, so that we could have some preliminary numbers for the Annual Meeting in February. READEX sent us the final results of its survey in March. At that time, 525 responses of the 992 surveys sent out had been returned, for a 52.9% response, an extraordinarily high return for a low-key (no incentive for return) random sampling. On May 7, we cut off on tabulating returns from the magazine so that we could report the results to you in this issue. At that time, we had 594 questionnaires returned. Our 594 and READEX's 525 (we have assumed that relatively few people returned both), represent a 1119 return, about 3.5% of the approximately 32,000 who received the January issue of ME. About ME Through responses to the questionnaire, we were hoping to learn more about you, your interests, and how the magazine could better serve you. Those of you who responded, told us something positive-you look at or read the magazine. Of the 1119 respondents, 1068 or 95.4% indicated that they had read or looked through the November and/or December issues. Those of you who refer to the magazine once are 466 or 42.6%. Those of you who refer to the magazine two or three times are 559 or 51.1%. Those of you who refer to the magazine four or more times are 68 or 6.2%. How much time do you spend reading the magazine? Of those responding to this question: 186 spent up to 1/2 hr 16.6% 590 spent up to 1 hr 52.7% 292 spent 1-2 hr 26.1% 51 spent more than 2 hr 4.6% In an informal survey among our staff, we determined that most people spend 1/2 to 1 hr reading magazines to which they subscribe at home. Also, many of you, 513 or 64.2%, do not pass your copy on to another reader, indicating perhaps that you are clipping it or receiving the magazine at home. Those magazines that are passed on reach: 2 people - 159 - 20.0% 3-5 people - 95 - 11.9% 5 or more - 31 - 3.9% Answers to what portions of the magazine you find useful indicated that the top three were Industry News, feature articles, and Technical Papers; see Table 1. The "other" category included advertising-display, classified, and employment-Coming Events, product information, Washington Survey, new books, the reader service card, and Engineering Fundamentals. Of those responding, 797 or 75.3% indicated a preference for dual notation of SI (metric) with English units; 228 or 21.5% preferred all SI units; while 34 or 3.2% preferred SI with dual notation of other metric units. Based on the preliminary numbers reported by READEX for this question, the MINING ENGINEERING Committee in February voted to return to a policy of dual notation. This decision has been implemented. We asked for your appraisal of the technical level of the magazine. Of those responding, 78 or 7.4% indicated it is too technical, 147 or 13.8% indicated it is not technical enough, and 836 or 78.8% judged it to have the correct tech¬nical level. In response to the question about whether you like to read an occasional feature that is not technically oriented, 32 said no, but an overwhelming 97% (1024) said yes. Quantitative seismology is an important tool for investigating mineinduced seismicity and the quantification of the seismic rock mass response. The spatio-temporal interpretation of seismic data within an ever-changing three-dimensional mining environment provides some challenges to the interpretation of the rock mass response. A grid-based approach for the interpretation of spatial variation of the rock mass response provides some benefits compared with approaches based on spatial filters. This paper discusses a grid-based interpretation of seismic data. The basic methods employed in the evaluation of the parameter values through space are discussed and examples of applications to different mine sites given.

The essential features of the zinc concentrate roasting installation at the Risdon Works by the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Ltd. are given.The problem of maintenance of ignition in down-draught zinc concentrate flash roasters is discussed, and a solution offered.A successful and economical method of using by-product oxygen for raising the roasting efficiency of hearth roasters is described. Three methods of utilizing oxygen for the same purpose in flash roasting are detailed, and their relative merit, considered.INTRODUCTIONThe zinc sulphide concentrate used at the Risdon Works is roasted autogenously for removal of sulphur in two hearth roasters, and four flash roasters. The hearth roasters are of modified Skinner type with eleven hearths. They were designed, and are used, for roasting mixtures of relatively low sulphide content. Their design and operation have been described elsewhere (Forster, 1949).The flash roasters are down-draughted furnaces with cross-section and rabbling equipment based on the hearth roaster design, and the process is similar to that developed by the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada Ltd. (Cominco) at Trail, B.C. (Stimmel, Hannay, and McBean, 1936).These furnaces are 20 ft. in diameter. They have three drying hearths through which hot gas is drawn from the combustion chamber by the burner fan. The combustion chamber is 2'1 ft. high above the collecting hearth (27 ft. in No. 4 unit), and the discharge hearth below it is 6 ft. high, so that a large gas offtake is possible. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH/PRL) conducted a series of large-scale experiments to evaluate the effectiveness of optical flame detectors, photoelectric smoke detectors, and combined ionization and photo­electric smoke detectors for rapidly detecting mining equipment cab fires. The detec­tor alarm times were then used to trigger the discharge of a fire inerting system inside the cab to suppress cab material fires. This paper discusses the types of fire detectors tested, the experiments that Were conducted, and the results that were obtained. Con-" elusions are that rapid detection of equipment cab fires can be achieved to trigger the discharge of a fire inerting system inside the cab to protect the operator in the cab.

The numerous small high grade gold and silver deposits of the Front Range Mineral Belt have been uneconomical because of the high costs of mill construction, transportation, and smeltering. Processing of these ores must be simple, cheap, with satisfactory recoveries, and be environmentally acceptable. Vat leach with direct electrolytic recovery satisfies these parameters. A battery of testing was conducted utilizing bottle and bucket tests. A five ton vat leach with direct electrolytic recovery gave excellent results while a five ton heap leach proved impractical due to channeling.
