Gwynfynydd is a small, high-grade black shale-hosted vein-gold deposit. The Chidlaw Link Zone is the only area being mined and contains 24 000 t ore grading 15.2 g/t gold. Within the Link Zone a complex vein structure occurs consisting of a mother vein up to 5 m thick and narrow (less than 0.5 m) leader veins. The former shows minor variations in dip, strike and thickness, whereas the latter show marked changes in all three. The leader veins are hosted within the footwall zone of the mother vein and both are composed of quartz with galena, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, pyrite and minor arsenopyrite. The vein system is transected by a series of cross-vein and intra-vein dip-slip faults. Pockets of gold occur at vein intersections or branches and within the complex footwall zone and are often related to variations in vein attitude and/or geometry. The Chidlaw Link Zone displays a complex, erratic distribution of gold mineralisation and a multi-stage history of structural activity, fluid flow and mineral deposition

Phosphate fines (size ≤ 45 μm), from the Red Sea Region, Egypt, were subjected to beneficiation process to recover the phosphorite grains from such fines. The sample is characterized by low P2O5 content (18.78%) associated with gangue minerals such as silica (22.77% SiO2) and carbonate (2.01% MgO) indicating its low grade. Phosphate pre-concentrate was prepared by gravity separation, using Falcon, where 63.37% of the phosphate, with 24.94% P2O5, 1.46% MgO, and 10.54% SiO2, was firstly recovered reducing the mass flow to the subsequent beneficiation process. However, the gravity tailing was the feed for the reverse phosphate flotation using bench scale column flotation where oleic acid was used as a carbonate gangue collector and amylase enzyme as a phosphate depressant. Under the appropriate flotation conditions (0.1% amylase, 5·10−4 mol/dm3 oleic acid, and temp. 30 °C), phospho-concentrate assaying 0.61% MgO, 13.14% SiO2, and 27.85% P2O5 with a P2O5 recovery of 55.45%, was finally obtained without the use of expensive depressants, e.g., phosphoric acid or sodium silicate. A tentative flow sheet for the whole process was postulated.

Amid some of the worst economic conditions that the mining industry has been faced with in more than a decade, the mood among the large crowd at the 114th Annual Northwest Mining Association?s annual meeting was surprisingly upbeat. More than 2,200 attendees showed up at John Asuaga?s Golden Nugget Casino in Reno, NV for the conference held Dec. 1-5. And more than 200 companies exhibited in 240 spaces, including SME and the Minerals Information Institute. The number of attendees and exhibitors were the most for the conference in more than 10 years. The conference was held in Reno/Sparks for just the second time in its illustrious history but began under the cloud of global financial turmoil. Prior to, and during the conference, the industry news headlines were grim, to say the least. An alarming number of mine plans and expansions had been put on hold; hundreds of miners across the United States had been or were in the process of being laid off; commodity prices were falling and some of the biggest mergers in the industry fell through while miners around the world put the brakes on to take a wait-and-see approach. It was a painful time for many, but the downsizing actions taken by many mining companies was exactly what needed to happen, according to Industry Outlook Luncheon featured speaker Frederick Sturm. He is the executive vice president and chief investment strategist and member of Mackenzie?s Investment team. He has earned a reputation as one of Canada?s leading investors in natural-based companies and he also manages the Ivy Global Natural Resource Fund in the United States Sturm said that the mining industry has fallen hard and that he expects it to bounce back quickly, before falling hard again. In these tough times, he said, the companies that have pulled back on production early are doing the right thing in the long run.

Titanium and Zirconium Industries Pty. Ltd. separates rutile and zircon from heavy mineral concentrate recovered from sand dunes on the east coast of North Stradbroke Island, Queensland. Separation plant feed is delivered to Dunwich, on the west coast, by a seven mile aerial ropeway traversing the island. Mining and concentration is effected by two floating dredge-concentrators now operating on the beach 31; miles from the aerial ropeway terminal. Heavy mineral concentrate is transported hydraulically from the dredges to the ropeway through a 6 in. pipeline. Six pumps in series deliver 24 ton/hr of dry solids in a pulp containing 13 per cent solids. For maximum economy the transfer pumping system is controlled deliberately to cause transportation in the zone of incipient settlement of solids, ieat velocities below the limit deposit velocity for the particular pipe diameter, pulp density, and specific gravity of solids. Automatic density control, based on a combination of power consumption and pipeline pressure, eliminates the danger of plugging the line but periodic flushing is necessary to remove gradual accumulation of solids in the bottom of the pipe. After 15 months operation the pipeline was descaled with hydrochloric acid to remove severe blistering with rust nodules, regrowth of which is now prevented by continuous injection of inhibitors. After transporting 100,000 tons of heavy mineral the average wear on the steel portion of the pipeline was 0·01 in. and indications are that wear on the asbestos cement portion is less.DESCRIPTION OF OPERATIONSGeographyTitanium & Zirconium Industries Pty. Multilevel-multiseam hardcoal mines on the European continent usually consist of a huge network of underground openings, sometimes more than 200 km long in total, with some longwalls operating down to a depth of 1,500 m. While operating several longwalls simultaneously, these mines are making use of a number of stationary and mobile measurement- and analysis units in their main ventilation passes combined with atmospheric measurements on the surface. This paper provides an overview over the systems and technology used and describes the typical set-up of a measuring net. To detect and monitor underground fires through fire gases measurement and -analysis, a mobile underground testing laboratory collects data locally in the area of the fire. These laboratories have proven to be extremely useful not only during the actual fire fighting but also for the long-term gas measurements in critical mine areas. They have repeatedly detected starting fires and have thus given the mine the opportunity to react early and to avoid larger damage. Therefore several mobile laboratory units have now been installed for long-term testing in a number of German mines and similar units are being used in the Czech Republic and Poland.

Near-field blast vibration response of restrained pipelines either buried or exposed was studied during rock excavations at sensitive locations for Stage-II (4x500 MW) commissioning work in a super thermal powerplant of the National Thermal Power Corporation Ltd. (NTPC) of India. The existing running plant of capacity 1000 MW has many important installations including pipelines of varying diameters. These pipelines were very close to the blasting locations (mostly within 12m). Blast optimization and consequent monitoring of vibrations were carried out simultaneously for more than 250 experimental blasts conducted by the authors. This paper emphasized, particularly, on the safety of pipelines and their responses due to repeated blasting impacts. A few guidelines supported by theoretical derivations are provided for futuristic research.

Mechanization has been at the core of productivity improvements since the industrial revolution. During the past 20 years, mining has derived spectacular progress from mechanization. In the future, however, mechanization alone will not be enough. In the next few decades, automation will bring about new generations of highly productive and safe machines, with low operating costs. Increased use of new and better technology is generally accepted as the prime factor capable of closing the productivity gap. The productivity gap is the difference between inflation and metal prices. The three S-curves in Fig. I represent the evolution of technology in general, and mining in particular. TI represents incremental changes. the dominant sort of technology changes in the mining industry: - Better drills, electric hydraulic drills vs. pneumatic drills, the drilling rate is twice as fast. - Better steel and bits, to accommodate the higher performance drills. - Improved chemical explosives. - Bigger trucks in open pits.

Secondary aluminum dross, which has been exposed for several years to atmospheric conditions, was characterized using chemical analysis, X-ray diffraction, optical and scanning electronic microscopy, and energy-dispersive spectroscopy. Based on the characterization, a method to purify the solids is presented. This method starts with the washing of the dross in boiling water to eliminate the soluble compounds like Na and K, followed by the physical separation of the metallic aluminum by milling and screening. Finally, an acid lixiviation process is applied using three different acid solutions, HCl, HNO3, and H2SO4. The best results were obtained using HCl. The main insoluble components of the dross after lixiviation were Al, SiO2, and Al2O3. MgAl2O4, AlN, Si, and Na2Al22O3·2H20 species were also found. Based on the alumina content, the solid product could be suitable as a raw material in the manufacture of castable refractories or metal matrix composites.

"Although ore sorting in mining is not a new concept, sensor-based sorting has failed to gain broad acceptance due to perceived challenges with the technology. In order to gain wider applications, this research focuses on treating waste rock and low-grade ore to identify and test appropriate sensors and to evaluate the response. Results showed that amenability of rocks to sensor-based ore sorting is both sensor and ore specific. It was also observed that the efficiency (recovery) of sorting is directly influenced by the degree of heterogeneity of the rocks. The overall outcome showed that with the right sensor, several of the materials tested are amenable to sensor-based ore sorting. Mining companies could benefit from multiple economic and design impacts, such as lower energy cost, lower transportation costs, higher metal recoveries and smaller footprints that lead to more sustainable mining. This paper will focus on the effects of heterogeneity of rocks on sorting potential and efficiency.IntroductionSensor-based ore sorting has been attracting more attention since the pressure for effective resource extraction and management has increased. An urge to make most of the current deposits, and to make the low-grade deposits economic to mine has ushered the technology to find new ways to overcome the new challenges. No matter the terminology used, such as coarse beneificiation, waste rejection, particle or bulk sorting, the purpose of sensor-based ore sorting is to remove low-grade rocks before the comminution circuit, increasing the feed head grade and quality while reducing the energy costs related to comminution.Despite nominal advantages, there have always been some concerns that have impeded the intorduction and acceptance of the technology. One of the most important shortcomings of ore sorting is their capability, or capacity, to keep up with the high-tonnage mining. Some other issues that have been mentioned as drawbacks to sorting include installation cost of such devices, feed preparation for effiecient sorting along with accuracy of sorting and probability of false negatives (Manouchehri, 2003)."

The existing PT Aneka Tambang (Antam) ferronickel smelter located at Pomalaa, Indonesia consists of two RKEF lines with reduction furnaces nominally rated at 17 MW and 18 MW, respectively. The low power densities and heat fluxes allowed both furnaces to operate with falling water film shell cooling systems. The furnace campaigns comprised a 5-yearly cold shut -down for metal taphole area rebuild and a 10-yearlysidewall and hearth perimeter repair. Towards the end of these campaigns the furnaces would typically be operated at below nominal power due to excessive sidewall temperatures. In January 2001 Hatch performed a smelter study which proposed options which indicated the possibility of a single furnace operation for the smelter, elimination of lime addition and transition to shielded-arc operation with associated efficiency and throughput gains. This paper discusses the process of uprating the second?line furnace capability from 18 MW to 32MW following the decision by Antam to implement the recommendations proposed by Hatch. It will cover the development of scaled-up furnace design basis by Hatch and Antam with the enabling application of Hatch cooling and binding technology. To optimise the capital cost and maximise Indonesian supply content and post installation support, the scope was carefully and clearly divided between Hatch and Antam. The challenges, set backs and valuable learning experiences gained during the implementation of the retrofit include; ?The support and re-use of existing roof system and challenges presented in re-use of existing crucible support steel. ?Training and technical assistance for Antam operators to perform refractory and copper cooler installation and maintenance of crucible integrity technologies. ?Hearth integrity during start-up and development of an initial charge and start-up procedure to achieve planned thermal expansion of the hearth prior to bath formation ?Implementation of a sidewall hold-down system within the refractory sidewall due to space constraints ?Existing furnace foundation reinforcement to overcome lateral forces on furnace piers during crucible support steel expansion ?Conversion of an open-loop gravity feed cooling water system to a closed loop pressurised system with integrated emergency gravity feed and backup system ?Existing water treatment system and pumping system improvement and modification to meet copper cooling system requirements ?Integration of the new instrumentation control system designed by Hatch to increase performance of the furnace monitoring system and operation ?Uprate transformer capacity from 25 MVA to 40 MVA to meet with requirement of Shielded- Arc Furnace Operation.

In response to recent mining disasters and new mine rescue team legislation, NIOSH researchers conducted meetings across the United States with mine emergency response experts to investigate current needs and issues. Some of the issues include emergency response preparedness, mine rescue contests, real-life training capabilities, and training facilities. Many new teams are being formed that must be trained for mine rescue team competitions as well as be ready to respond to a variety of mine emergencies including a fire or explosion, a massive roof collapse, mine inundations, or vertical shaft rescue situations. Therefore, it is important that these teams are adequately prepared and trained. This paper presents a summary of domestic and international coal mine rescue training facilities and identifies those that provide unique, real-life, and/or state-of-the-art training. Research findings from this report will be used in further NIOSH investigations to improve coal mine rescue training. Greater use should be made of lineations in investigations of the engineering properties of rock masses and in structural studies guiding prospecting programmes.A prominent alignment of elongate mineral grains and stretched pebbles usually marks the primary direction in which metamorphic rocks have been extended by flow. In local adjustment zones separating masses that have extended different amounts, this lineation has been a direction of slip. Kinks and crumples resulting from this slip lie in secondary lineation directions transverse to the primary mineral lineation.During deformation relatively mobile materials move into dilatant zones caused by irregularities in primary flow directions. This secondary movement transverse to lineated, primary-flow directions is the cause of crenulations and folds with axes parallel to flow lineations.INTRODUCTIONThe arrangement of inequidimensional particles in rocks is rarely statistically random. Platy minerals tend to be parallel to bedding and foliation planes. Elongate particles and linear structures lie most frequently in certain lineation directions. The types of elongate particles in lineated rocks include needle and blade shaped mineral grains, sheared out segregations, and stretched pebbles, amygdules, and aolites.Crenulations and kinks are the most common of the linear structures involved.Faint lineations are readily overlooked. Even strong lineations have been ignored. Development in the Upper Texas Gulf Coast during 1945 resulted in the discovery of 23 new fields; one Miocene, eight Frio, three Cockfield-Yegua and eleven along the Wilcox trend. The Wilcox trend appears to he the most active at this time. Producing depths of the new Wilcox discoveries range from 2050 to 10,050 ft. Drilling along the Frio trend has been, for the greater part, projected to the deeper downdip sands. Eighteen of the new discoveries are classified as oil or condensate and five are gas discoveries.

Work started on the building of the Amsterdam Concert Hall in 1880 by driving over 2000 wooden piles of 13 m on which foundation-beams out of wood and brickwork were made. During construction the design was changed. This was due to the latest German developments, requiring double walls instead of single, so that the space in between could be used for ventilation and heating. Therefore the pile load, originally designed at approximately 100 kN, increased even to 170 kN for some piles, causing settlements and unacceptable cracks in the brickwork. Settlements of up to 18 cm were measured. In 1985/1986 around 400 vibration-free Tubex-displacement-piles were installed under the Concert Hall, with a shaft of 0355 mm, a pile shoe of 0560 mm and a pile length of approximately 18 m. After these Tubex piles had been installed they took over the complete weight of the whole building, thus eliminating further settlements and damage. 95% of all the construction activities took place while the concerts went on. The chosen solution also made it possible to create a new basement under the Concert Hall as an extension for dressing-rooms etc.

Bateman Engineering Project's acid-plant track record goes back to 1977. Bateman Engineering can design sulphuric plants based on gas from sulphur burners, metallurgical off gas as well as pyrite roasting systems. Bateman Engineering has a technology marketing agreement with NORAM Engineering Ltd of Canada to provide state-of-the-art, well-proven acid plant technology, and also has access to roaster technology from several sources, including Chinese technology. Utilising the Noram technology agreement, Bateman was awarded the Engineering and Procurement (EP) contract for the Ambatovy Nickel Project, Sulphuric Acid Facilities in 2007. This is the first Greenfield sulphuric acid plant Bateman has designed for many years, producing a combined 5,500tpd, and is one of the largest sulphur burning acid plants in the world. This paper gives an overview of the sulphuric acid plant for the Ambatovy Nickel Project, advantages of Noram?s unique technology on offer, an overview of work conducted on a recent study of an pyrite roasting acid plants as well as a new technology currently being developed by Bateman for the direct combustion of solid sulphur to form sulphur dioxide.

Localized uniform conditioning is a technique developed to spatially locate selective mining unit grades that have been derived using uniform conditioning for the assessment of recoverable resources. The technique has the advantage of producing selective mining unit estimates conforming to the uniform conditioning panel-specific grade-tonnage curve while introducing spatial information at the scale of the selective mining units. This paper describes an alternative technique to localized uniform conditioning which does not explicitly require the uniform conditioning panel-specific grade-tonnage curve to localize the selective mining unit estimates. The technique can therefore be implemented in mining software where uniform conditioning is not available.

"This paper was originally intended to be a presentation of a case study of two surface bituminouscoal mines in the southern Appalachian coal fields located within five miles of each other. These mines were nearly identical in every aspect from geologic setting to equipment application. Althoughrepresentatives from each mine desired to participate in the preparation of this paper through support in providing background information and in review and editing, it was later concluded that, due to the environmental sensitivity associated with each mine, it may not have been a good decision to present this case study in a public forum."

DURING the past 20 years the advantages of reinforced concrete as a substitute for timbering in so-called permanent mine openings have been fully recognized, and its use has become almost general practice in the larger mines. The term "permanent mine openings" is used advisedly and is assumed to embrace such openings as ventilation shafts, material shafts and main hoisting shafts, with their adjacent stations, ore pockets, etc. In the concreting of such openings, the actual cost as compared with that of timbering has been of secondary consideration, the support of large openings, elimination of fire hazards, and prevention of inter-ruptions to production being the primary objectives. The ultimate economy, however, of lining such openings with concrete when they are to remain in use during the entire life of the mine, and especially when they are in bad ground, will seldom be questioned. During this 20-year period there have appeared in engineering publi-cations a number of interesting articles on the use of concrete in mines, nearly always describing some specific project of major proportions, such as the concreting of ore pockets, large stations or main hoisting shafts. Such articles are unquestionably of interest, since the projects require considerable engineering thought, not only in the method of excavating large openings, but in their engineering design as well. Concreting of main hoisting shafts, particularly when this is done with the least possible interruption to production, provides some interesting problems. The concreting of haulage drifts of the dimensions commonly found in mines, on the other hand, soon develops into a routine operation, there-fore it is with some hesitancy that the author attempts to prepare an article on this subject. The writer can recall only one article on the concreting of mine haulageways, although several articles have been written concerning the concreting of tunnels considerably larger in dimensions than those required in general mine practice.

Dressed in black tie and Victorian attire, some 200 people came to Leadville, CO, for a September weekend featuring a National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum (NMHF&M) induction banquet and a scenic mountain train trip to Fremont Pass and the Climax Mine. The 18th annual induction banquet on Sept. 17 began with cocktails and a open house. It was a chance for visitors to tour the National Mining Museum including the new Hennebach Wing, opened in February. The new wing is named in honor of Ralph Hennebach, retired chairman of Asarco. Formerly Leadville Junior High School, the Hennebach Wing encompasses more than1,440 m2 (15,500 sq ft) of floor space in two stories. One prominent feature is a 1923 Wills Sainte Claire touring sedan. Climax Molybdenum donated this first all-molybdenum steel motorcar. Docents were available throughout the museum to give banquet attendees directions and answer questions.
