A uniquely mineralized area extends from northwestern Canada through Alaska into eastern Siberia. Some of the metals found there are relatively rare in the conterminous United Stales. Among these are cobalt, the platinum-group metals, and chromite. Geologic evidence suggests that cobalt and the platinum-group metals may be present in deposits that could constitute nationally important reserves. Chromite in potentially minable deposits is known, but it may be relatively less abundant. Limited reserves of these metals have been delineated, but most of the favorable terranes and reported occurrences throughout the vast expanse of Alaska remain unexplored. As part of the mineral studies mandated under the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act, the Bureau of Mines' Alaska Field Operations Center and the Bureau's research centers at Albany, Oreg., and Reno, Nev., are cooperating in a long- range program to investigate occurrences and delineate reserves of cobalt, the platinum-group metals, and chromite in Alaska. Studies of other critical and strategic minerals will be phased in during succeeding years, as ongoing projects are completed. This first in a series of annual reports summarizes available information about deposits and past production of cobalt, the platinum-group metals, and chromite, and describes current and planned Bureau investigations of these minerals.

Education and training research is a major component of the Bureau of Mines human factors research program. The goal of human factors research is to enhance human performance for the purpose of improving both safety and the profitability of the minerals industries. This is achieved through the design of mining equipment, work tasks, management procedures, and development of human resources. This proceedings volume presents several new developments that are helping to improve the quality and efficiency of health, safety, and occupational skills training in the mining community. Several papers address the issue of how to teach and assess miner abilities to deal with underground mine emergencies. Other papers examine practical procedures for defining and cost justifying the integration of structured training and other performance improvement strategies to enhance the proficiency of the work system.

Advanced Process Control (APC) has been one of the most beneficial tools in the past decades available to minerals processing industry. Low capital cost together with significant improvements in process optimization have made APC an attractive investment option for nearly all mineral processing units. During economic downturns, importance of process optimization becomes even more relevant as metal producers tend to target de-bottlenecking and process efficiency improvements rather than large-scale capacity upgrades. APC project clearly has a lot of potential to improve process performance but there are also some pitfalls to be identified and avoided in order to achieve a desired outcome. Above all, APC project implementation is collaboration between the system vendor and user. Targets for the optimization must be agreed together with the customer and process performance must be defined before and after the optimization project. Most importantly, performance of the process must be monitored on a continuous basis during and after the project and potentially improved further. This paper discusses Outotec’s experiences from various concentrator optimization projects. Some examples are discussed in more details; however, the main target is to present general guidelines enabling a successful APC project implementation.

This paper reviews the changes in the coal industry over the past 30 years and attempts to predict the trends over the next ten years. The last 30 years have seen a steady concentration of production into fewer, larger mines, which operate on 3: more continuous basis, and a major increase in productivity per employee. Coal exports have increased from zero to almost half the country's total production. As well as major changes in exploration and mining equipment and the increasing use of computer tools, the industry now operates in a relatively new regulatory and commercial environment.   Safety legislation now requires the writing and enforcement of policies and procedures by the mining companies, rather than adherence to inflexible regulations enforced by an Inspector. Accident rates have decreased dramatically. The transition from coal mining licences to permits, requiring landowner consent and resource consents, is well under way. Environmental controls are now an essential aspect of the industry.   Equipment suppliers now offer maintenance services, production guarantees and flexible financing.  Contract miners offer mine design and restoration as part of the contract. In a similar approach, Solid Energy now offer an ash disposal service and assistance with resource consents to their customers as well as investment in technology to ensure a consistent product to demanding specifications. Solid Energy has proposals for energy centres which install and operate the coal burning appliances and simply sell energy to the customers. The next 10 years should see an intensification of these trends of bigger mines, more exports and greater technology and a 'package' approach to customer service.

The reduction process of pre-oxidized ilmenite concentrate powder in 30%CO–70%N2 atmosphere was characterized by thermogravimetric and differential thermogravimetric (TG-DTG) analysis system at the temperature from 1073 to1223 K. The isothermal reduction results show that the reduction process is divided into three stages and the corresponding apparent activation energies are obtained by iso-conversional method and model-fitting method, respectively. For the first stage, the conversion degree increases sharply with increasing time, and the reduction process is controlled by the random nucleation and subsequent growth model (A2 model). For the second stage, the conversion degree increases slowly with increasing time, and the reduction process is controlled by the diffusion of carbon monoxide in the reduced layer (D1 model). For the third stage, the reduction processes at different temperatures are controlled by the diffusion of carbon monoxide in the reduced layer (1073 K and D1 model), phase boundary chemical reaction (1123 K and R2 model), random nucleation and subsequent growth (1173 to 1223 K, A2, and A3 models), respectively. For the whole reduction process, the apparent activation energies obtained by iso-conversional method and model-fitting method are 71.72 and 31.92 kJ mol−1 , respectively

Microcomputeranalysis has long been a technique for engineering professionals to improve the theoretical and practical design of continuous mining systems. Such work has been typically composed of modeling observed events and then introducing a variety of known elements with predicted results to compare against the results of the model. Programs written in BASIC, Cobol, Fortran or other language dominated such efforts. These programs have taken years to develop and prove out. This article explores a new management tool used daily at Tanoma Mining Co. (TMC) to track and improve continuous mining systems through the use of microcomputers and Lotus l-2-3 software. Data provided by section foreman, shift foreman, and maintenance personnel are analyzed against predetermined goals. In this way, new production targets are developed, weaknesses in the current mining systems are identified, and the results of changes are measured. The current results of this system on the productive output of TMC systems is on the order of 10% improvement. Thin seam coal mining is an industry within the broader industry of coal mining. Thin seam mining faces the same cost pressures and engineering problems as its higher-seam competitors without the advantages of moving volume per foot of extracted material to stay at an economic parity with others requires additional creativity within the management teams to extract higher productivity gains from the existing workforce and mining systems. TMC operates a deep mine in Indiana bounty, PA, about one hour northeast of Pittsburgh.

A program of stress change and roadway deformation monitoring was undertaken to measure the forward abutment load distribution about a retreating longwall panel at Dartbrook Mine. The results of this monitoring allow roadway conditions observed at various stages of mining to be ranked according to the estimated vertical stress they have experienced. This ranking also provides a means to predict and visualise future roadway conditions at various stages of mining. This paper presents the results of the monitoring and describes the approach developed to predict future roadway conditions. The monitoring results show the vertical stress distribution associated with the front abutment from a longwall goal decreases exponentially away from the goaf edge. The vertical stress distribution peaks at the goaf edge at 5 to 6 MPa stress increase and decreases to 1 MPa within 50 m becoming imperceptible beyond 100 m By scaling this measured distribution to reflect the loading environment, the vertical stress can be estimated for different overburden depths and different stages of mining. Photographs of roadway conditions at particular vertical stress levels provide a way to visualise roadway conditions at various stages of mining in the future

Tumbling mills and some theoretical and practical aspects of milling are discussed. Attention is directed towards the difficulty of relating the dynamical analyses of the motions of particles within mills to the existing treatments of breakage processes. This synthesis may be advanced by a study of milling that utilizes the matrix analysis of breakage processes. Application of the matrix analysis to results obtained on (i) grinding in open-circuit a zinc ore in a conical pebble mill and in a modified conical mill, (ii) "grinding of cement clinker in a compound mill, and (iii) to some drop-weight grindability tests is discussed. It is shown that the 'IT-breakage model adequately describes the breakage processes of each of the tests. (The proportion broken in each breakage cycle is given by 'IT and is independent of particle size.)The size distributions of the products are accurately predicted in the cases considered. Matrix analyses of the breakage of coals, various ores and a cement clinker have been made. Appendices give an elementary account of the matrix methods and give the equations fully describing reverse order closed circuit operations. Mineral exploration programmes around the world use data from remote sensing, geophysics, and direct sampling. On a regional scale, the combination of airborne geophysics and ground-based geochemical sampling can aid geological mapping and mineral exploration. Since airborne geophysical and traditional soil-sampling data are generated at different spatial resolutions, they are not immediately comparable due to their different sampling density. Several geostatistical techniques, including indicator cokriging and collocated cokriging, can be used to integrate different types of data into a geostatistical model. However, with increasing numbers of variables the inference of the crosscovariance model required for cokriging can be demanding in terms of effort and computational time. In this paper a Gaussian-based Bayesian updating approach is applied to integrate airborne radiometric data and ground-sampled geochemical soil data to maximize information generated from the soil survey, enabling more accurate geological interpretation for the exploration and development of natural resources. The Bayesian updating technique decomposes the collocated estimate into two models: prior and likelihood models. The prior model is built from primary information and the likelihood model is built from secondary information. The prior model is then updated with the likelihood model to build the final model. The approach allows multiple secondary variables to be simultaneously integrated into the mapping of the primary variable. The Bayesian updating approach is demonstrated using a case study from Northern Ireland. The geostatistical technique was used to improve the resolution of soil geochemistry, at a density of one sample per 2 km2, by integrating more closely measured airborne geophysical data from the GSNI Tellus Survey, measured over a footprint of 65 x 200 m. The directly measured geochemistry data were considered as primary data and the airborne radiometric data were used as secondary data. The approach produced more detailed updated maps and in particular enhanced information on the mapped distributions of zinc, copper, and lead. The enhanced delineation of an elongated northwest/southeast trending zone in the updated maps strengthened the potential for discovering stratabound base metal deposits..

This work investigated the toughness behavior of polyester matrix composites reinforced with up to 30% in volume of long, continuous and aligned sisal fibers by means of Charpy impact tests. It was found that the addition of sisal fibers results in a marked increase in the absorbed impact energy of the composites. Macroscopic observation of the post-impact specimens and SEM fracture analysis showed that longitudinal rupture through the sisal fiber interface with the polyester matrix is the main mechanism for the remarkable toughness of these composites.

This paper describes a model that can simulate the behaviour of a pneumatic intensifier that is generally referred to as an ?air pump? (AP). The AP is used in many South African underground mines, and utilizes compressed air with pressures between 0.3?0.6 MPa to pump water up to pressures of 12?18 MPa. The high pressure water is used in numerous underground mines to pressurize props and roof bolts that act as safety and roof support devices. The simulation model reproduces the intensifier's operation under various conditions and therefore can be used to investigate the AP's sensitivity towards environmental conditions, design parameters (such as spring stiffness, plunger diameter, nozzle diameter etc.) and operating conditions. Model validation by comparison with laboratory experiments showed good correlation. The model can subsequently be used to investigate design changes aimed at improving the AP's performance and reliability over a wider range of operating conditions.

An attempt has been mace in this publication to present annotated references to all articles pertaining, to ore dressing that were published during 1931 and 1932; in a few instances reference is made to articles published prior to 1931 where the articles have not been included in previous bibliography appended to the annual statistical discussions of ore concentration published by the Bureau of Mines. Articles have been taken from more than 75 periodicals, journals, serials, etc., and 423 articles are abstracted herewith. A number of these abstracts, particularly those appearing in foreign publications, have been taken from Chemical Abstracts (published by the American Chemical Society, Easton, Pa.), the general use of which the authors wish to acknowledge. Other annotations were taken directly from the original publications. The entire field of ore dressing has been included in the bibliography and articles dealing with crushing, grinding classification, concentration, thickening, and filtration have been included, as well as on amalgamation, cyanidation, leaching, magnetic concentration, washing, etc., and on theory and laboratory operation. The articles are arranged in alphabetical order by authors. Lack of printing funds prohibited the inclusion of a subject index.

Interest in industrial minerals in recent years has increased to such an extent that it has taken them into the mainstream of the Australian mineral industry. Notwithstanding that time series data on the values of production, exports, and imports show that industrial minerals are overshadowed by metals and energy minerals, their contribution to the national economy is important and more significant than would seem to be indicated by the statistics. Whereas the ex mine value of metals generally includes some processing (at least to a concentrate stage), most industrial minerals are valued at little more than their extraction cost, in addition to which such costs are generally low because most industrial minerals are exploited in low-cost surface operations. Consequently, values of mine production of metals and industrial minerals are not strictly comparable in that values of mine production of metals tend to be overstated Short term growth of the industrial minerals sector is assured because of several new projects already commissioned but not yet reflected in the statistics. Longer term growth is also assured, based on various other major projects that are likely to come on stream in the early to mid 1990s.

In the proposed criterion for coal a distinction is made between brittle and "psuedo-ductile" failure. This criterion is the basis for the development of new equations for coal pillar strength, including a transition from brittle fracture to pseudo-ductile yielding. In addition the equations obtained allow the critical minimum pillar dimensions to be calculated to avoid "catastrophic" and "ultimate failure".The validity of these formulae can be tested by comparing their results with pillar case histories derived from the literature.

The first mention of gold in Western Australia was in 1848 when some specimens of copper ore, which are believed to have come from the Murchison district, were sent to Adelaide for assay. Gold was present in these specimens, but no particular interest seemed to be attached to this fact as the search at that time was mainly concentrated on base metals and coal. Interest appeared to be shown in gold in 1852 when several parties moved out eastwards from York looking for goldbearing country. Though these parties inmany cases were very near to what is now known as the Yilgarn Goldfield, nothing was found.The next record of gold was reported in some specimens which were brought in from Cardup, some 25 miles from Fremantle. Though this area was investigated, it would appear that all the gold had been contained in the specimens and nothing further was found, though the report had been the cause of a small rush of people interested in gold.From time to time specimens had been brought in by various people from the district east of Northam, and in 1861 a reward emanating from private sources was offered for the finding of gold within a radius of 150 miles from Perth. The Government at this stage took an interest in exploration for gold and in the same year supplemented this privately offered reward on a £ for £ basis. The Government also, about this time, commissioned a practical miner, with prospecting experience in the Eastern States, to examine the country between Albany and Northam with a view to the possible existence of goldbearing veins in that area. UNDER a contract relating to the sale of a Broken Hill concentrate, the differentiation between granular and slime concentrate is determined by the proportion of the material which will pass a 200-mesh (I.M.M. standard) screen, and this has led to considerable attention being devoted to the question of laboratory sizing tests with screens of this order.It was found that many of the screens turned out by the makers during the war, and also since its termination, did not conform with the I.M.M. specifications as closely as some supplied in pre-war days. A perfect screen is hardly to be expected, but when the above contract was framed the parties anticipated that, by special care being taken during manufacture, a screen at least as good as the best pre-war screens would be available. This, however, has not proved to be the case, and the large irregularities in screens recently supplied render them useless for sizing determinations under the contract. This paper presents the design concept using floating piles to support 2500Ton oil storage tanks on a very soft alluvial clayey soil of about 40m thick in Riau Province of Sumatra, Indonesia. The floating piles of various penetration lengths were designed to support seven numbers of such storage tanks seating on a 20m diameter and 500mm thick reinforced concrete (RC) circular raft. The pile points have been strategically located at the RC raft. Varying pile penetration lengths have been designed to minimize the angular distortion of the thin RC raft and the out-of-plane deflection at the tank edge. Vibrating wire strain gauges were installed at different levels inside the ø350mm prestressed reinforced concrete piles to measure the load transfer profile during the static load tests and water-loading test. The installation and interpretation of the instrumentation are described and discussed. Boreholes, in-situ tests like piezocones, vane shear tests and standard penetration tests, and laboratory testing were carried out to obtain geotechnical parameters for the pile designs. Static load tests were also carried out on the spun piles of varying lengths of 24m, 30m and 36m respectively. It has been demonstrated that the floating pile system can be a cost effective design to support heavy structures on very soft compressible deposits with satisfactory performance. Finally, the design concept validated with the results of instrumentation is discussed.

Conventional hand drawn isopach maps of the cover of the Bulli Seam are too eomplex for use in the delineation of large domains of similar cover. Isopach maps prepared from trend surfaces fitted to the cover data are much simpler in form and so provide a convenient method of delineating broad domains of similar cover.
