The rapid development of the Australian steel industry over the past twenty years has greatly increased the demand for coking coal from the collieries owned by the Broken Hill Proprietary Co. Ltd. and Australian Iron & Steel Ltd. This in turn has called for an intensive and continuous programme of colliery expansion and new colliery development, along with the reorganization and modernization of existing collieries.This paper presents a general description of the factors involved and the techniques used in planning modern colliery development for the steel industry.PRELIMINARY GEOLOGICAL INVESTIGATIONSIn any colliery development, preliminary geological investigations require a detailed and practical knowledge of the geology and characteristics of the coal-field as a whole. The metallurgical heart of the majority of copper oxide processes is the heap leaching operation. Fresh low grade sulfide ores is a far greater challenge.The success of this unit operation is so important that operators need to understand the ramifications of their decisions or non-decisions and how they could affect the downstream processing. Heap leaching is an operation that can be described as a scientific art whereby principles of science can be used to guide experienced personnel in attaining their goals. Recent advances have been made based on better understanding the ore characteristics. The success of a heap leach operation, or otherwise, is dependent upon a number of factors, notably: The type of ore to be treated The extent of testwork completed to define the process The interpretation of the testwork results Ore preparation prior to stacking Agglomeration and curing requirements Other issues are: Compliance with the ’smaller’ requirements of environmental authorities Adequate and timely drainage of solution from the base of a leaching lift The degree of saturation in the pads Heap porosity – coarser or finer ore, which is better? Higher or lower irrigation rates – which would produce a better result? Laying out irrigation pipework for ease of operation and maintenance The addition of water, raffinate during agglomeration where needed The heap leaching of sulfide ores, including chalcopyrite, via enhanced bacterial leaching is discussed. INTRODUCTION Over the last twenty years, production of extremely pure copper from solvent extraction and electrowinning (SX/EW) has become more common in a market of real declining prices for copper metal. This paper touches on a number of heap leach operations and experiences. These projects were subjected to extensive engineering design and resulted in low capital cost, efficient operations with a number of lessons learned. The key to these operations was the performance of the heaps and associated fluid collection systems rather than the plants themselves.

There was a time when an occasional failure of a tailings embankment was considered an acceptable risk associated with mining activities. This is not the case anymore. A major tailings failure today could result in the indictment of mine officials, huge fines and a possible site closure due to the loss of operating permits. As a result of this changed operational environment, tailings disposal facilities must be operated with these potential consequences in mind. Physical controls for tailings embankments are prohibitively expensive. However, the nuclear industry has developed a system of administrative controls as an alternative to physical controls. Administrative controls may be defined as control of actions, through organizations and management, using written procedures, record keeping, review and audit to assure operation of a facility in a safe manner (10 CFR 50). Administrative controls can reduce the cost of operating tailings impoundments, as well as increase the level of confidence in these facilities.

Experimental animal studies comparing asbestos and non-asbestos varieties of tremolite indicate tremolite asbestos is markedly more carcinogenic. By direct analogy, the differences in carcinogenicity between tremolite asbestos and non-asbestos prismatic tremolite should be the same for the other types of amphibole that also crystallize in the asbestos and non-asbestos habits. The earliest of the experiment animal studies, done more than 25 years ago, have design limitations by modern standards including the use of injection or surgical implantation as the route of administration rather than the more relevant route of inhalation. However, the differences in the carcinogenicity of amphibole asbestos and non-asbestos amphiboles are sufficiently large to be clearly discernable even with the study limitations. Together with later studies on these and related minerals, there is strong evidence of a much lower hazard associated with the shorter, thicker fibers of the non-asbestos amphiboles, than is found for the asbestos analogues of the same mineral. It is possible that the non-asbestos amphiboles are no more hazardous than other silicate minerals widely considered nuisance dusts. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. INTRODUCTION Caving Mine Drift Support Design The support of production drifts remains a high-cost item facing the developer or operator of an underground caving mine. Support costs are incurred well in advance of ore production, and there is a strong need to minimize these pre-production commitments of capital. Due to the extensive rock loads that normally develop during the caving process, the support used in caving mines is typically quite heavy and therefore costly. The process of designing this support increasingly makes use of basic tunneling principles, but is hindered by the still-incomplete state of knowledge of rock behavior in caving mines, and high variability of geological conditions in caving orebodies. Caving mines differ from tunnels in that the deformations and rock loads induced are transient and dynamic in occurrence, and are normally large in magnitude, often well in excess of rock mass strength. As opposed to tunnels, caving mine layouts are more intricate, and the methods and effects of construction ordinarily are not as closely monitored. Safety factors in mining tend to be lower and rock masses tend to he weaker. These aspects prevent strict application of tunnel design technology to caving mine drift support, with the result that mine drift supports are commonly designed chiefly on the basis of experience at other mines. Mining procedures at caving mines are evolved in response to site-specific requirements, to the extent that there are really as many caving methods as there are caving mines.

The theme of the 2012 North American Tunneling conference (NAT) was ?Tunneling: Driving Value.? This theme best reflects where the tunneling and underground construction industry is to-day. Major advances that have been made in technologies have provided tremendous improvements in productivity, which, in turn, have allowed the industry to deliver more cost-effective and less disruptive solutions to the nation?s infrastructure needs. Despite a weak economy, domestically and globally, cities and states continue to spend billions on infrastructure improvements. For the underground construction industry, that means more transportation and water, wastewater, storm water projects and other underground structures. And, for each project completed, underground construction and tunneling technology grows. The NAT conference, put on by the Underground Construction Association (UCA) of SME, provides an outlet for technology transfers among professionals. This year?s conference, held in Indianapolis, IN June 24-27, attracted 918 attendees, up from 803 at the last NAT in 2010. The accompanying exhibit also featured 116 exhibitors occupying 140 booths. That was up from 108 booths in 2010. So, the meeting continues to grow as underground construction professionals throughout the world seek to learn from their peers.

The effect of oxalic acid, acetic acid, citric acid and EDTA on extraction of Cr (?) in soils contaminated by chromium- containing slag was investigated using a batch of incubation experiment. The results show that the pH value decreases more obvious with the increase of the amount of organic acid. The amount of Cr (?) extracted increases with increasing the amount of organic acid. When the ratio of organic acids to total Cr was 5:1, citric acid revealed the highest extraction effectiveness, followed by EDTA, oxalic acid and acetic acid, respectively. The amounts of Cr(?) extracted by citric acid, EDTA, oxalic acid and acetic acid increased by 439%, 244%, 215% and 162%.

A section of the largest Superfund site in the country has become a success story for engineering innovation and for cooperative problem solving. “Superfund site” and “success story” are phrases that are not commonly found in the same sentence. Yet, their use seems justified. The project’s certification of construction completion from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) includes a commendation. It reads, “for completing the project nearly a year ahead of schedule, at a cost substantially less than estimated originally and without com-promising the requirements for protection of human health and safety or the environment.” The EPA director who issued that certification also referred to the project as “a positive example of cooperation among all who have a stake in the outcome.”

Spiral concentration forms a crucial part of gravity separation circuits. The application of process models in the operation of gravity separation circuits offers significant benefits in recoveries and grade control. Significant strides in the modelling of spiral concentrators have been made during the last couple of decades. Despite these advances in modelling techniques and models, application in industrial processes is not fully optimized. The adjustment of splitter positions to accommodate changes in the feed parameters is impractical and difficult, resulting in losses. In this work an optical method is employed to detect the concentrate band position as a function of operating variables. As expected, the results indicate a strong influence of the solids content and total heavy mineral (THM) feed grade on the predicted gangue-mineral interface. Viscosity modifiers indicated the band position to be sensitive to viscosity and therefore the slimes content. Validation on an industrial sample indicated the possibility of using this model in feed-forward control application.

The Tati Activox® Project (TA®P) is the first step towards the implementation of the Norilsk Nickel Activox® process. The ultrafine grinding (UFG) and autoclave pressure leach process conditions are the heart of the Activox® patent. Low grade base metal sulphide concentrates are leached in the process to recover the base metals and to produce LME grade nickel and copper cathodes and cobalt carbonates. The downstream processing of the metal-containing liquor produced by this process includes solvent extraction circuits to extract and concentrate metal-rich solutions, before the various final products are obtained. This paper gives an overview of many of the relevant design aspects taken into consideration in the design of the Tati Activox® solvent extraction circuits. It addresses key design elements related to leach process conditions such as scaling, materials selection for corrosive solutions, pH control, crud formation and treatment, multiple SX trains designed to prevent organic cross-contamination, and design aspects related to the mitigation of fire risks.

This Bureau of Mines report is concerned with the testing procedures for evaluating clays, shales, and slates for lightweight aggregates using the rotary-kiln method of production. To meet the increasing demand for light-weight concrete, rapid, accurate methods for appraising raw materials for light-weight aggregate are needed. Preliminary tests were made on samples of clay, shale, and slate, using laboratory equipment, and the data were used to establish operating conditions for pilot-plant-size rotary-kiln tests. Lightweight concrete was made from the processed aggregates and the properties determined. The results show that the laboratory data can be used to guide rotary-kiln testing, and, with the exception of sampling, a complete appraisal of a raw material for lightweight aggregate concrete can be made in 3 days by the methods described in this report.

Grouting is a frequently utilized remedy in the planning and implementation of ground improvement and tunnel rehabilitation practice. The state-of-art grouting application used for Chicago’s McCook Reservoir project offers a unique alternative to the tunneling industry for pre-excavation grouting as well as tunnel rehabilitation, rescue and post-excavation ground improvements. The McCook Reservoir project included a computerized grouting control and data collection system for a precise and highly effective groundwater cutoff in fractured dolomites. By using balanced and stabilized grout mixes, the effective permeability of the rock mass was reduced over two orders of magnitude to less than 0.1 Lugeon by installing a double line grout curtain. The stable grout mix designs allowed high pressure and effective grouting at depths up to 125 m (410 ft).

Vibration levels on a variety of equipment in a South African opencast mine were measured in this study. The well-established ISO 2631-1 (1997) standard methodology was used for the computation of weighted root mean square (WRMS) and vibration dose value (VDV). This method was used to evaluate the whole-body vibration (WBV) on a wide range of equipment in the opencast mine using the two main parameters, namely the daily exposure A(8) which is based on the WRMS concept and the VDV which measures shocks. The results obtained show that while the majority of the equipment rendered exposure levels that are below the exposure limit value (ELV), exposure levels on about half of the equipment do exceed the exposure action levels. The study also highlights the importance of shock in the observed responses.

"The use of fine grinding (FG) in mineral processing is well established. The application of FG in the South African platinum industry is more recent and it’s use in the recovery of PGM’s from dormant tailings dams is unique. Anglo Platinum uses IsaMill FG technology at their Western Limb Tailings Retreatment project (WLTR) near Rustenburg in the North West Province of South Africa.In December 2003, Anglo Platinum commissioned the first purpose built tailings re-treatment facility for PGM recovery in South Africa. The concentrator re-treats Merensky ore tailings from concentrators that operated early last century. The WLTR facility takes advantage of modern technology, such as FG, to economically recover PGM’s from material historically considered as waste. The WLTR concentrator has a capacity of 4.8 Mtpa, and has been designed to easily expand to 10.8 Mtpa. The flow sheet includes recovery of tailings by high pressure water monitoring, ball milling, rougher flotation, rougher concentrate regrinding and cleaner /recleaner flotation.The rougher concentrate is reground in an IsaMill, which is a stirred mill that operates with inert silica sand grinding media. For this project, Anglo Platinum required a stirred mill of a unit size not previously available. Xstrata Technology and Anglo Platinum collaboratively developed the largest wet, fine grinding mill available; the M10,000, 2.6 MW IsaMill.The use of IsaMill technology was enabling for the WLTR project, as it allowed smeltable concentrate grades to be produced from the oxidised, slow floating tailings. The economics and practicality of fine grinding has fundamentally changed with the M10,000 IsaMill. Flotation is transformed by high intensity attritioning in the inert media environment, and the narrow size distribution of product in open circuit configuration. The use of conventional steel media grinding to improve fine particle flotation is limited due to the oxidation of liberated mineral surfaces inherent in these environments."

The major copper orebody at Mount Isa is being extracted at a rate of four million tonnes per year. The method used requires an equivalent rate of back filling with (mainly) cemented fill. There were three major incentives for developing this mining system. The first was the prospect of high ultimate recovery of the orebody. The target is 100 per cent recovery. Also the proposed stoping layout appeared to offer significant advantages in development and production costs. Finally, extensive subsidence above the northern end of the orebody could have disturbed permanent surface installations and jeopardised a possible future open cut. The full implications of this ambitious strategy were not apparent in the early years. Now, after 12 years of production the benefits are being realised and they can be weighed against the costs. Probably the most interesting result which comes from this analysis is the significance of cutoff grades and dilution factors in balancing mining and filling rates.

Anomalous geologic or stress-induced conditions can create a hazardous working environment for underground miners. Seismic attenuation tomography provides a valuable tool for understanding static and dynamic conditions induced by mining. As a longwall shearer cuts coal, it generates seismic energy. As this energy travels through the rock mass it is attenuated in a manner proportional to the degree of fracturing of the rock mass. By calculating this attenuation at specific locations underground, the degree of fracturing of the rock mass, and hence the relative stress state or material properties can be inferred. The goal of this work has been to create a tool which can be easily used by the mining industry to obtain information about the distribution of stress concentrations or material properties across a broad area in advance of mining.

A suite of specimens from the newly developed Black Star copper ore body at Mount Isa was made available for mineragraphic study by the Mount Isa Mines, Ltd. The specimens were selected as representative of the different phases of mineralisation found in the ore body, rather than with a view to furnishing a complete cross-section of it; and the examination has been carried out with a view to ascertaining (1) the nature, extent and association of the arsenic, antimony and possibly bismuth, minerals in the ore, (2) the mode of occurrence of silver in the ore, and (3) whether galena and sphalerite occur in minute forms well below the sIzes readily observed in hand specimens.Analyses of the January to June, 1944, mill head composites show that the proportions of the elements Ag, As, Sb and Bi in the ore are as follows:Ag 0.000013 = 0.35 oz./tonAs 0.024Sb 0:002Bi 0.0005The copper content of the mill heads ranges from 3.5% to 4.75%, the lead content from 0.03% to 0.08,% and the zinc content from 0.09% to 0.23%.MINERAL COMPOSITIONThe specimens range from massive sulphide ore, consisting of areas of chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, and rarely sphalerite, from 1 to 3 cm. across, to fragments of extremely finely banded pyritic shale in which no minerals other than pyrite are visible. The gangue associated with the massive sulphides is chiefly dolomite, and sometimes white quartz. The pyritic shale fragments show evidence of shearing and faulting on a micro-scale, the fractures sometimes being filled with sulphides and vein minerals.The ore minerals found in the polished sections are pyrite, arsenopyrite, marcasite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, valleriite, chalcostibite, galena, dyscrasite, jamesonite, magnetite, gold, graphite and rutile.Pyrite (FeS2)Pyrite occurs chiefly in two forms according to whether deposition took place along the bedding planes or along the intersecting faults and fractures. "Recent innovations in metal smelting technology utilize continuous oxygen-enriched smelting and converting processes which are capable of producing off-gases containing up to 60% SO2 or more. Other SO2 recovery processes, involving solvent absorption and steam or vacuum regeneration, can produce off-gases with SO2 concentrations nearing 100%.Processing of these high-concentration SO2 off-gases in conventional sulfuric acid plants can cause excessively high catalyst bed temperatures and poor SO2 conversion. In order to avoid these problems, a conventional acid plant design must dilute these high SO2 process gasses with dilution air in order to provide the required oxygen to effectively convert the SO2 and provide a heat sink (via the inert N2) such that the exothermic reaction, SO2 + ½ O2 ???SO3, does not exceed the temperature limit of the catalyst or the converter vessel.MECS, Inc. (MECS) has proven that a high SO2 feed gas design can be a viable option which can increase energy recovery, reduce energy consumption and potentially reduce capital costs."

Analytical predictions of the rate and magnitude of settlement of deposited oil sands tailings slurries generally overestimate how fast pore pressures will dissipate. Field deposits of nonsegregating tailings to mature fine tailings show continued high pore pressures near the surface which impede surface reclamation. In geotechnical analyses which predict the consolidation behavior of soft soils a finite strain theory is used. Effective stress-void ratio and void ratio-hydraulic conductivity relationships determined from laboratory large strain consolidation tests, are used in the finite strain predictions. This theory, however, cannot predict the full range of sedimentation, consolidation and pore pressure dissipation which occurs in large scale deposits of thixotropic tailings slurries. A new large strain consolidation model which assumes that the creep rate of the slurry exceeds the pore pressure dissipation rate is being investigated. This model is relevant for rapidly deposited, low permeability thixotropic slurries where the upwards drainage path increases by several meters a year, such as, in oil sand fine tailings ponds and nonsegregating tailings deposits. The model will be verified by analyzing the 10m high column of fine tailings at the University of Alberta which has been monitored for over 20 years and in which the excess pore pressures are still very high.

Usualmente, la minera Atacocha está expuesta a grandes precipitaciones pluviales durante una larga temporada húmeda. Por lo que es necesario eliminar gran parte del agua colectada por las lluvias a través de las plantas de tratamiento de aguas de exceso que garanticen los contenidos metálicos por debajo de los limites máximos permisibles. En ese sentido, el presente texto describe la aplicación de un modelo matemático para comprender, manejar y optimizar las diferentes variables que afectan al proceso del tratamiento. El modelo está basado en los fenómenos de transporte de solución a través de la pila y la cinética de cianuración de los metales contenidos en el mineral, el cual permitirá simular los cambios en los parámetros operacionales y metalúrgicos como diferentes tipos de mineral, flujos entre plantas Merrill Crowe y CIC, un mejor tratamiento de excesos de agua para minimizar su efecto en la producción de oro y el manejo óptimo de soluciones y predicciones a futuro de producción de oro.
