A procedure was developed for recovering metal values from copper-smelter fume. The fume is first leached to neutrality with dilute sulphuric acid to obtain a solution of zinc sulphate containing a low level of impurities. The tailings from this leach are treated with hydrochloric acid in two stages, in which tin and zinc are quantitatively leached and recovered as a tin concentrate and a zinc sulphatelzinc chloride solution.About 80 per cent of the lead sulphate is converted into lead chloride, which can be recovered as a pure product.Data on the effect of temperature, acid concentration, aeration, and solid/liquid ratios on the hydrochloric acid leach are presented, and the fate of the most important metals during the recovery process is described. Alternative treatments of the tailings from the neutral sulphuric acid leach were briefly investigated.

RESEARCH strengthened the position of cesium as the preferred material (commonly but erroneously called "fuel") for ionic propulsion engines. Its use as an element of the plasma thermocouple for generating electricity also seemed more likely. Domestic Production.-No domestic ore of cesium and rubidium was produced. San Antonio Chemicals, Inc., San Antonio, Tex., and Maywood Chemical Works, Maywood, N.J., continued to produce cesium and rubidium compounds including carbonate, chromate, hydroxide, nitrate, sulfate, and all four halides. Rocky Mountain Research, Inc., Denver, Colo., began producing various cesium and rubidium salts. American Potash & Chemical Corp., Los Angeles, Calif., offered cesium and rubidium for sale.

In 2005, NIOSH and Badger Mining Corporation entered a partnership to implement ergonomic interventions, including a systematic process, to address exposures to risk factors that may result in musculoskeletal disorders or other types of injuries/illnesses. As a result of this partnership, an ergonomics process was integrated with the existing safety and health program to promote an on-going application of ergonomic principles, and over 40 task-specific interventions were implemented during the first year of the process. This paper presents details of the process integration, and several examples of task-specific interventions that reduced exposures to risk factors.

The Fe-TiC composite powder was synthesized in situ by carbothermal reduction of ilmenite. The standard Gibbs energy minimization method was used to calculate the equilibrium composition of the reacting species. The effects of the reaction temperature (1300 °C - 1500°C) and milling time of precursors on the Fe-TiC conversion and powder morphologies were investigated using XRD and SEM method. The synthesized products showed that composite with iron matrix and titanium carbide as a reinforced phase was formed.

"In January 1985, Equity Silver Mines Limited began operation of a cyanidation circuit to scavenge precious metals from the flotation tailings. At present, this process is treating 270,000 tonnes of tailings per month and is recovering in excess of 0.20 grams of gold per tonne. To obtain these results Equity is operating a carbon-in-leach circuit that utilizes pressure stripping, zinc precipitation acid washing and thermal reactivation. A cyanide destruction circuit is also required to minimize the deleterious effects on reclaim water in the flotation stage. This paper describes the existing scavenger plant, and details the start-up problems encountered and the modifications made to correct these problems.INTRODUCTIONEquity Silver Mines Limited , a 68% owned subsidiary of Placer Development Limited , is located 38 km southeast of Houston in north central British Columbia. The geographic location of Equity Silver Mines is shown in figure #1. In September 1980, production first began with the ore being supplied from the Southern Tail open pit. In March 1984, the Southern Tail deposit had reached its economic pit depth, and since then ore has been supplied by the Main Zone pit the gold mineralization in the Main Zone is less refractory than the Southern Tail and cyanidation of the flotation tailing appeared to be a viable alternative.An extensive test program was undertaken and the results confirmed that considerable gold and silver values were amenable to cyanide leaching. A feasibility study showed that these values could be economically recovered and the detailed engineering work began."

The increasing need for alternative energy sources as well as the less clearly perceived but equally increasing demand for non-fuel minerals has resulted in extensive exploitation of near surface deposits. Many such deposits have depleted reserves and mining corporations are increasingly turning their attention to deposits, with thicker overburden, less competent materials, steeper dips and more complex structure. These deposits pose mine layout, geotechnical and equipment problems as well as the need for large outputs to achieve economies of scale. The paper describes the major problems and operational solutions for such deposits using continuous excavation and transport equipment.

Lime was a highly useful commodity thousands of years before the simple chemistry of its manufacturing process was known. The employment of lime for agriculture, building, and even certain essentially chemical purposes is so old that its origin is among the unrecorded details of man's first ventures into the manufacture and use of prepared substances. Lime is a most versatile material and consequently has come to be widely utilized in modern civilization. Immediately before the depression of the early 1930's the annual production of lime in the United States was more than 4 million tons, valued at 33 to 42 mil-million dollars. This output was sold to many industries, so many that mere enumeration becomes tedious.

Rock engineering has now been practised as a discipline for about50 years, and many sophisticated methods of analysis for use in rock engineering design have been developed. However, analysis is only a tool for use in engineering design, and rock masses are often so complex that realistic modelling of them, even with sophisticated methods of analysis, is impossible. At the other end of the scale, rock mass classification methods have been developed to quantify the rock mass. These ?numbers? are now widely used for assessment of stability of underground and surface excavations in rock, for the determination of rock support requirements, and for the estimation of rock mass strength and deformation properties. In considering these areas, the two concepts?design, and prediction of behaviour?will be dealt with. The discussion will be introduced by a consideration of the characteristics of the rock mass, which will highlight the variability in its properties and hence the uncertainty in the behavioural parameters. Examples of real projects will be used to illustrate the discussion.

Mining engineers are ready to take a big step into a new field-oil mining. To understand the subject, one must look at the world's oil supply and demand as well as petroleum technology successes and failures. The US has an abundance of solid hydrocarbon and uranium energy resources, but 75% of its energy for industry, transportation, manufacturing, and space heating comes from liquid petroleum and natural gas. So there are increasing efforts to discover new oil reserves; today the number of drilling rigs operating in the US is at an all-time high. But with 80% of the world's wells already located in the US and Canada, good new exploration prospects are difficult to find. The cost of drilling deep new wells has also greatly increased. The US faced a similar situation in the early 1950s, when primary oil production declines began. During that time, the petroleum researcher introduced secondary recovery techniques such as water flooding and gas injection. This increased the average amount of extractable oil from discovered US reservoirs from 17% to 33%. Production soared and the world petroleum price remained stable until the end of the 1960s. Secondary recovery techniques were then supplemented by tertiary oil recovery technologies-increasing sweep efficiency with such things as CO2 injection-that are, so far, only partially successful in most petroleum fields. Even so, these technologies could raise cumulative recovery expectations to 35-38%. The "lost" oil in depleted US reservoirs equals 48 km3 (300 billion bbl) of conventional oil, or 12 times the current recoverable reserve base. At the present rate of US consumption-1 km3/a or 6 billion bbl/a-this is enough to run the US for 50 years without importing any oil. Moreover, there are 16-24 km3 (100-150 billion bbl) of as-yet unrecoverable heavy oil and tar sands in the US.

Mineral processing models have been discussed for many years but it was not until digital computers became available about 1960 that serious attempts at circuit simulation could be carried out. Even then the work was primarily academic until PCs could be used by engineers in plants and design offices in the mid-1980s. Since then simulation has moved quickly and it is now at the point that most processes can be simulated reasonably accurately for purposes of design and optimization. There are still some significant deficiencies, notably in dry grinding and separation, and in the chemical interactions in flotation. Future work will involve: ?improvements of existing models ?dynamic simulation for automatic control and, in particular ,for training which is a weak link ?using advanced simulation models to predict liberation and separation from data acquired from SEM-based liberation analysers. Eventually mineral processes models will be part of total simulation systems which will incorporate mining and downstream processes including all environmental impacts.

"EVTAC, an iron ore mine in Minnesota, had trouble meeting the customer’s pellet silica requirements. In addition, the mine plan was moving towards a lower grade ore and funding was not available for plant improvements to compensate for the change in ore or improving quality. Small changes to optimize various processing equipment resulted in significant improvements in both quality and productivity; for example, productivity on one mill line increased by 10% while producing lower silica concentrate. This paper will provide the methodology that allowed EVTAC to improve quality and productivity through process optimization with little capital investment.INTRODUCTION EVTAC, an iron ore mine in Minnesota, had trouble meeting the customer pellet silica requirements. In addition, the short-term mine plan was changing to a lower ore grade. Because of limited funds, EVTAC did not have the capital for investing in the plant to compensate for the ore change or to make improvements to lower product silica levels. Small changes to optimize process equipment resulted in significant improvements in quality and productivity; for example, one mill line feed rates increased by 10% while also producing a higher quality concentrate. These changes were sufficient enough to allow the mine to lower the target ore grade beyond their initial goal. At one time, a $3M flotation facility was considered as a way to meet quality with the new ore grade. However, the process changes were able to accomplish the same silica reduction with roughly a $50,000 investment in VFDs for sump controls. This paper will discuss some of the modifications that allowed EVTAC to meet the quality and production objectives with little capital investment. It also discusses the methodology used to make these process improvements."

This investigation was planned to determine:1. The precipitation-hardening properties of the copper-nickel-phosphorus alloys; and2. The influence of arsenic and bismuth, singly and together, on the mechanical properties of these alloys.It was carried out in conjunction with an investigation, previously published in these Prooeedings on "The Influence of Various Elements on the Mechanical Properties of Copper containing a small percentage of Bismuth," and also formed part of a study of the influence of bismuth, nickel and phosphorus on the properties of commercial arsenical-copper.The first part of the present investigation arose out of a discovery some years ago of precipitation-hardening in phosphorus-deoxidized coppernickel boiler tubes, containing approximately 2% nickel and 0·03% phosphorus, supplied to an Australian Railways Department. At that time there was little information available on precipitation-hardening in copperrich copper-nickel-phosphorus alloys, but at the end of 1935 a short paper on the subject was published by E. C. Rollason and T. G. Bamford(2) and at the beginning of 1940 a comprehensive account was published by D. K. Crampton, H. L. Burghoff and J. T. Stacy.(3) Although the investigation carried, out independently by the present author was not as comprehensive as that of Crampton, Burghoff and Stacy, the results are in agreement with those of the American as well as of the British authors; hence, only a summary of this aspect of the work is needed here to establish a basis for a study of the influence of bismuth and arsenic.PREPARATION OF TEST PIECESAll alloys were melted under charcoal in plumbago crucibles in an oil-fired furnace and were poured out of contact with air into oil-dressed moulds to give billets either 7· 5 in. long X 0.83 in. diam. X 1·3 lb. weight or 12 in. long X 1·125 in. diam. X 3·3 lb. weight depending on requirements (the larger size was used, for example, in establishing the annealing characteristics of the precipitation-hardening alloys). The raw materials were electrolytic copper of the composition described in the previous paper(I) 6% copper-arsenic, 14% copper-phosphorus, 1:7% copper-bismuth, and Mond nickel in the form of "shot." The method of producing test pieces from these billets and the annealing treatments ana tests to which the pieces were subjected have been described in the previous paper.

The East Bay Municipal Utility District’s Claremont Tunnel is an 18,000-foot long water tunnel that crosses the Hayward Fault zone near Oakland, California. It was originally completed in 1929. This project involved the construction of a bypass tunnel through the fault zone, including an enlarged vault section designed to accommodate up to 8.5 feet of horizontal offset. Ground conditions encountered included sheared and crushed serpentinite and clayey fault gouge, and presented specific challenges for construction. A special excavation and support sequence used concrete-backfilled side drifts as foundations for the vault steel sets. It also allowed for a 20-foot-wide top heading and bench excavation in soft and squeezing ground conditions.

In order that the use of continuous mining machines be most economic, the equipment must be operated at rated capacity as much of the time as possible and downtime for repairs kept at a minimum. A large factor influencing any proposals for maintenance programs is the complexity of the machines—often the intricacies of the precision-built equipment requires engineering knowledge byond the scope of mine maintenance personnel. A training program is part of the answer; there are others. In addition to investigating a joint company-manufacturer equipment-design improvement program, Mountaineer Coal Co. has launched a detailed preventive maintenance program to combat extensive downtime often encountered when continuous miners are used. Everyone in the coal industry knows the importance of operating continuous miners at their rated capacity as much of the time as possible. The potential capacity of the miner is such that l-min. delay means from 3 to 8 tons of coal lost. Today's miner is a well designed, precision-built machine, complicated with hydraulic and electrical equipment and complex mechanical assemblies with all possible combinations of gears, levers, and rods. As the machine becomes more complex, the problem of maintenance becomes more acute. The transition from conventional to continuous mining has taken place so rapidly that the mine mechanic has been unable to keep pace. When there is a machine failure, the maintenance man usually employs either the trial-and-error or the play -it-by-ear method of repair, but this represents an expensive proposition. Mine mechanics, maintenance superintendents, and mine managers complain about the complexity of the machines and how difficult it is to keep them running. There is no shortage of skill in the design offices. Machines are designed by good engineers, but for engineers. What's the answer? Better trained maintenance men—better maintenance instruction—better field service. These are all good corrective measures, but the real cure is to provide for the men at the do it level. Designers have got to cooperate with men to simplify maintenance on the increasingly complex machine. The designer must be aware of how his machine can be maintained. Sometimes a simple design change in a bearing, oil seal, or a bushing will correct recurrent breakdowns. Parts such as filters, hydraulic cylinders, hoses, and pivot pins can be better arranged on the machine to make them accessible so that the mine mechanic can easily keep the machine producing. Therefore, to get our maintenance off on the right foot, the program must begin back in the design office, before the machine is delivered to the mine property. Realizing the importance of this aspect, our company set out on a joint company-manufacturer equipment-design improvement program. This is a formal program in which quarterly reports are written covering machine defects, design weakness, and general problems relating to machine maintenance and performance. The manufacturer in turn comments on each and every item appearing in these reports, indicating the action he proposes to take. In addition to the written reply, meetings are scheduled with manufacturer representatives to discuss further the outlined problems. The benefits realized from this organized program are both substantial and far reaching. Good maintenance begins with a good design. The subject of preventive maintenance is not a new one. Volumes have already been written on the subject. It consists primarily of doing the maintenance work when you want to rather than when the machine demands it. However, a preventive maintenance program can be overdone. Theoretically, if carried to ridiculous extreme, all working time could be spent inspecting and repairing the machines and no time would be left for production output. Our goal in maintenance is to maximize running time for all machines, and to prevent or at least minimize production downtime. There has been a persistent need to forecast roof falls so that miner’s exposure to hazardous underground environments can be minimized. Several monitoring techniques have been developed and are used today with varying levels of acceptance in the mining industry. This paper examines the potential for monitoring microseismic emissions activity as a means of forecasting roof falls. The use of this activity to forecast roof falls has drawn only limited attention, resulting in a lack of published field performance data. This deficiency is being partially addressed by analyzing data obtained during longwall mining at Moonee Colliery in 1998. The Moonee data base contains a wealth of information concerning roof fall forecast parameters and the seismic alarm criteria used to develop these forecasts. Four seismic alarm criteria were developed and used by Moonee with varying degrees of success. Roof falls were forecasted 73% of the time with average forecast times of 54 minutes. Ninety percent of the predicted roof falls had a warning time, i.e., the time between warning and roof fall event, of greater than 1 minute. The fraction of forecasted roof falls decayed logarithmically as a function of warning time, until only 20% of events were predicted more than 100 minutes prior to roof falls. False alarms occurred in 50% of the warnings. Many of the false alarms were quickly followed by a cessation in mining which could have temporarily halted the on-going failure process. If mining had continued immediately after the false alarms, a roof fall may have occurred soon after. The microseismic activity collected from Moonee Colliery demonstrates that techniques to forecast roof rock instabilities in underground mines are possible.

In this work, a gram-positive bacteria was used as biosorbent to elucidate the aluminum load capacity under different conditions related to metallurgical and chemical plants. The sorption data followed the Langmuir, Freundlich, Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherms. In order to determine the best isotherm fit, three error analysis methods were used to assess the data: correlation coefficient (R2), residual root mean square error (RMSE) and Chi-square test. The error analysis established that the Dubinin-Radushkevich model fits better the aluminum biosorption data. The maximum sorption capacity was found to be 41.59 mg.g-1. The maximum removal of aluminum was 95% at pH around 5. The experimental kinetics data was evaluated considering two models (pseudo-second order and pseudo-first order). This study indicated that the R. opacus is an environmental friendly biosorbent.

The decrease in quality of Australian iron ore, coupled with the demand for more efficient energy use, necessitates closer monitoring and optimisation of process conditions for iron ore sinter production. Sinter properties are correlated with the mineralogical content and traditionally, quality control has relied on methods such as Fe2+ determination, point counting via optical microscopy and automated electron beam techniques such as QEMSCAN; these can have a typical turnaround time of several days between sampling and reporting of results. As well, there is additional uncertainty around quantifying some of the complex mineralogical phases in sinter such as silico-ferrite of calcium and aluminium (SFCA) and SFCA-I, which are key phases influencing sinter quality. There is a clear need for the implementation of alternative analytical methodologies that offer a turnaround in hours or even minutes to provide information to accurately maintain production conditions.X-ray diffraction (XRD) is a technique widely used for the quantitative mineralogical phase analysis (QPA) of ores and processed materials in the iron ore industry. Partial least squares regression (PLSR) analysis methods have recently been suggested as an indicator of sinter Fe2+ content from powder XRD data without the need for rigorous and often time-consuming mineralogical analysis by the operator. In this study we provide results from the implementation of PLSR to predict the strength of iron ore sinter. Results are sourced from a well-constrained data set comprising strength properties (as quantified by a tumble index (TI)) from a series of compact laboratory test samples. Using this data set it was determined that PLSR has potential to be used as a method for calculation of sinter TI from powder XRD data and, therefore, process control.CITATION:Webster, N A S, Pownceby, M I, Ware, N and Pattel, R, 2017. Raising capital by issuing debt or equity is necessary in almost every corporation. In the field of corporate finance, the raising of capital is a heavily-studied topic. However, some of what is studied on this topic in corporate finance is not applicable in the mining industry. There are also many financing options that were created for the mining industry such as flow-through shares, prepaid forwards, and royalty sales. The cyclical nature of the industry makes the risk-return profile of financings more difficult to estimate than in other industries. Additionally, the methods used to assess firm value are different than other industries, as the values of orebodies are not included on balance sheets. For precious metals companies, which are a hedge against most other securities, there are additional complications with determining investor expectations and cost of equity. This thesis puts forth a decision-making framework to explain mine financing choices from the perspective of mining companies. The approach is threefold. First, all of the major equity and debt financing instruments available to mining companies are presented and analyzed. Each financing method is assessed on a wide range of criteria. Next, these concepts are applied in case studies of four companies: BHP Billiton, Barrick Gold, Teck Resources, and Noront Resources. For each company, the overall choice of financing methods is shown and analyzed. The effect of financing choices on the weighted average cost of capital (WACC) is calculated. The final section deals with case studies of individual mine finance decisions during the past two years.
