"INTRODUCTIONTeck-Corona Operating Corporation's David Bell Mine is located 35 Km east of Marathon, Ontario. In conjunction with its 1000 tonne per day gold concentrator, the company operates an effluent treatment plant for the treatment of mill, mine and site effluents prior to environmental discharge. This paper provides a brief overview of treatment strategies and methods, employed to detoxify final effluent.WATER MANAGEMENTThe tailings impoundment basin, located 3 Km south of the plant site, provides storage capacity for all process effluents and site run-off. Basin supernatant (reclaim water) is recirculated to the plant for reuse as process water, in order to minimize fresh water consumption. As site run-off and limited fresh water intake exceed natural losses due to evaporation, reclaim water in excess of process requirements is passed through the effluent treatment (ET) facility to control tailings basin level by providing regulated discharge of environmentally acceptable effluent. (Figure 1)PASSIVE TREATMENTTo reduce treatment costs and burden on the ET facility, reclaim water is fed to the plant to take maximum advantage of natural destruction processes occurring in the tailings basin.These include: volatilizationphotodecompositionbiological oxidation and precipitationstorm water dilutionConcentrator recovery techniques (Figure 2) are directed toward maximizing gold recovery while limiting the addition and extraction of contaminants requiring disposal and eventual treatment.Currently ore ground to 90% -200 mesh is pre-aerated at pH 9.0 with lime for 18 hours prior to 30 hours cyanidation at pH 9.5 with low cyanide ion excess (70 ppm).Pre-aeration passivates cyanicides prior to cyanide contact. This reduces cyanide consumption and the formation of cyanide complexes. In conjunction with recovery requirements low pH is maintained to retard the dissolution of stibnite into its antimony and sulfide components."

The MetroWest Water Supply Tunnel project includes three main work shafts, excavated primarily in rock. Shaft L is 9.8 m (32 ft) diameter and 124.1 m (407 ft)deep. Shaft E is 7.0 by 12.8 m (23 by 42 ft) and 91.4 m (300 ft) deep. Shaft 5A is 7.9m (26 ft) diameter and 72.5 m (238 ft) deep. Construction methods are compared and contrasted. Lessons learned involve a differing site condition in soil overburden, contractor-proposed modifications, and remedial slurry wall work. Other aspects discussed include noise and vibration control, groundwater inflow, water treatment, muck handling and contract administration issues.

The data reported in this bulletin are largely the result of experiments conducted by the Salt Lake City station of the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the department of metallurgical research of the University of Utah. The work on lead is only one of the phases of the investigations carried on at that station during the years 1914 to 1916. The results of similar work with zinc ores and with copper and other ores will be published in future reports of the bureau.

Author's Note: Since the paper on "All-Flotation at North Broken Hill Limited" was read and discussed, the metallurgical results obtained have conclusively justified the adoption of the All-Flotation treatment.At present the shipping grades of lead concentrate produced from North mine ore range between 74% and 75% Pb, carrying approximately 43 oz. Ag and 4.5%-5% Zn. The lead recovery in lead concentrate is recording 95%-96% of the lead content of crude ore, and the milling and treatment cost on 6400 tons crude ore perweek of 96 hours has dropped to 6s. 3.6d. per ton on ore. With an increased ore tonnage, and with a new mill, considerable further reduction in costs is certain.New flotation machines, with 30 in. vertical depth of overflow (instead of 42 in. depth), are now being tried for the secondary granular treatment, with advantageous results. The treatment to-day is practically the same as that outlined in the paper, excepting that additional concentrate is returned for retreatment in the existing units.(Signed) A. LOWRY.Mr. T. A. THE development of the North Lily ground, which lies in the East Tintic district, Utah,. about half a mile northwest of the famous Tintic Standard mine, was undertaken by the International Smelting Co. on purely geological reasoning. The geologic theory on which this work was based resulted from several years' intensive study of the East Tintic district by the geological department of the International Smelt-ing Co., who were, during this period, indebted to many for valuable suggestions that were adopted and became part, of the gradually maturing concept. For example, E. J. Raddatz, president of the Tintic Standard Mining Co., first called attention to the significance of rhyolite alteration; J. W. Wade, assistant manager, contributed greatly to our knowledge of the great Tintic Standard orebodies; and so on all along. the line. In short, the ultimate theory embodies the aggregate experience and thought of all those most familiar with the area in question. The problem in brief was this: is the Tintic Standard deposit an isolated occurrence of ore, or are other ore deposits to be found in the vicinity? If the latter is the case, where can these others be looked for? The difficulty of the problem lay in the fact that most of the area is covered by rhyolite; beneath which lies the limestone in which the orebodies occur; so that the available evidence as to the structure of the formations, and, their mineralization; is of the slightest. The sav-ing features of the case, by means of which it proved possible to solve the problem, are three in number first, the rhyolite is pre-mineral and hence has been exposed to alteration by the mineralizing agencies; second, certain persistent dikes and fissures are con-tinuous through the rhyolite into the limestone below; and third, the extensive underground workings of the Tintic Standard gave a good basis for study of the sub-rhyolite structure and the occurrence of ore. The rhyolite overlies the Tintic Standard orebodies, and over them shows a large patch of brownish altera-tion. This patch proves to be due to chloritization and sericitization, which has spread out from certain zones of dikes, pebble-dikes and fissures. The dikes are com-posed of a light fine-grained rock which has been altered to an aggregate of quartz, alunite, and magnetite. They can be traced southwest to a common center in Big Hill, the entire mass of which is composed of the same material. The pebble-dikes, which consist of a mass of rounded pebbles, mainly quartzite, in a matrix ranging from the same quartz-alunite-magnetite rock as above to almost pure vein quartz, are closely asso-ciated with these light dikes, but in general extend farther northeast. They thus represent a specialized phase of the intrusive action of which Big Hill is the center. The brown chloritized rhyolite, then, is an alteration product due, in all. probability, to emana-tions closely associated with this phase. Since it coin-cides geographically with the Tintic Standard area of highly altered limestone, with its many great ore-bodies, it has been concluded, that it is the expression in the rhyolite of activities which have also altered and mineralized' the underlying limestone.

Introdduction The main line of ascent in the development of the nickel industry may be traced back through the International Nickel Company of Canada, Limited, to its earliest antecedents, the Canadian Copper Company and the Orford Copper Company. Mining geology is but one aspect of the overall development of this organization, and the stress it has placed on geology grew according to the need. In the early days, intensive geology was not required because ore supply was not one of the main problems of this or any of the pioneer companies. The difficulty then was to find economic methods for reducing the ores to nickel and copper, and markets for absorbing nickel in the face of a limited demand from consumers heavily prejudiced in favour of the New Caledonia product. "Very early in the history of the region it was patent to everyone that to share in the full benefits of the industry the same individuals or company must control the whole of the operation necessary to manufacture the finished product' (1, p. 45). These conditions were fulfilled for the International Nickel Company in 1902 when the Canadian Copper Company (incorporated 1886), with its ample ore supply, took the initiative to merge its interests with those of the Orford Copper (Refining) Company (incorporated 1887) to form the new company which, with reorganizational changes, emerged as the producer of the overwhelming bulk of the world's nickel. The Mond Nickel Company, Limited, entered the field in 1899 with a refining process, and over a period of years acquired ore through purchase of mining properties. This Company operated successfully and independently until 1929 when its assets were joined with those of the International Nickel Company in order to permit the most economic exploitation of the Frood-Stobie orebody in which both Companies were interested.

This paper describes a novel system for the biological sulfate reduction (BSR) of acid mine drainage (AMD) using primary sewage sludge (PSS) as carbon source in an upflow anaerobic sludge bed (UASB) reactor configuration. A UASB reactor was operated at a temperature of 35¦C and it received PSS (1875 mg/L COD) augmented with sulfate (1500 mg/L SO42-). The experimental results indicate that a high treatment efficiency was achieved at more than 90 per cent sulfate reduction at a liquid hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 13.5 h. In this study, the effects of various operational parameters were also investigated. The effect of a biomass recycle stream from the top to the bottom of the sludge bed was found to initiate rapid BSR from the bottom of the bed. Profile tests showed that effective and immediate sulfate reduction was achieved as soon as the influent entered the reactor. From these results, it can be concluded that the UASB configuration using PSS as energy source would be a viable method for the BSR of AMD.

The Hatch Mott MacDonald/Bechtel Joint Venture team is designer and construction manager for the 5.25-mile Tunnel Segment of the overall 16-mile Silicon ValleyRapid Transit Project, which extends the existing Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system southward from Fremont to San Jose. The Tunnel Segment includes twin boredtunnels, mined cross passages, and three deep station excavations situated in highlyvariable ground, high ground water table, and a dense urban setting with high-risebuildings adjacent to the largest excavation. This paper will discuss design challengesthat have arisen with the excavations and the proposed solutions.

Ok Tedi Mining Ltd has been using flotation for the production of copper/gold concentrates from a complex copper sulphide ore for several years. During this period, much effort has been devoted to metall- urgical treatment of the ore. This paper examines some of the mineralogical aspects of the sulphide minerals in the ore using the electron microprobe analyser. Results have revealed the complexity of the copper sulphide minerals and in particular, chalcocite. Analysis of both plant and laboratory flotation products has provided further insight into the effects of mineralogy on the flotation of copper and iron sulphides. A significant observation is that some of the pyrite minerals apparently exhibit natural floatability. The implications of the mineralogical characteristics of the sulphide minerals on the flotation of the ore are also discussed.

The exclusion of coal fly ash from regulation as a hazardous waste has led to increased interest in returning ash to the coalfields for co-disposal. A multi-year column study used coal refuse with high potential acidity (4% total-S), and two alkaline ashes in various bulk-blends. The unamended refuse acidified rapidly, producing acidic (pH 1.7) leachates, high in dissolved metals. Treatments blended with sufficiently high amounts (20 to 33%) of alkaline ash produced alkaline (pH >8.4) leachates with low metal levels, while lower ash blending rates acidified over time to produce metalliferous leachates. Examination of solid materials indicated that pyrite oxidation was occurring to some extent in all treatments. A regression equation (r2 = 0.95) was developed to estimate time to net acid release for mixtures of these materials. Ash alkalinity and refuse potential acidity must be balanced to insure water quality for co-disposal environments, or the ash materials should be isolated away from acidic drainage waters.

"Metix has introduced a three-piece ’deep-cooled’ copper slag tapblock into a six in-line copper matte settling electric furnace. The tapblock was designed without any internal refractory; it relies purely on the development and maintenance of a freeze lining on its hot face and within the tapping channel to protect the copper and promote the integrity of the surrounding endwall refractory lining. In addition, the geometry of the tapblock further supports the sidewall refractories, reduces the impact of funnelling and, therefore, the need for premature rebuilding of the furnace endwall, and facilitates easy removal and replacement of the wear components even under ’hot’ furnace conditions. Eighteen thermocouples embedded in the copper components ensure full resolution of the copper condition, enabling plant personnel to identify wear rates, estimate freeze lining thickness and stability, and schedule replacement of spares and wear components well in advance.At the time of writing the tapblock had been in operation for 6 months with approximately 350 000 t of slag having been tapped through it. Every indication is that the design will limit the need for premature relining of the furnace endwall due to rapid deterioration of the tapblock and its surrounding refractories. IntroductionNonferrous furnaces rely heavily on the maximization of refractory campaign life to increase profitability and reduce planned downtime. In large electric copper slag-cleaning furnaces utilizing insulating linings, campaign lives of six or more years are realistic if consideration is given to each aspect that can degrade the refractory lining during the campaign. An area that is particularly vulnerable is the slag tap-hole and the local surrounding refractory. To avoid premature relining of the furnace walls, every effort should be made to consider not only the tap-hole design itself, but also the selection of the sidewall refractory material and its construction immediately adjacent to the tap-hole, and furthermore the interplay between the tapblock and this adjacent refractory. A holistic approach to the design that considers these interdependent features in the slag tapping area can reduce the incidence of accelerated refractory wear (‘funnelling’), support the surrounding refractories to prevent their collapse, introduce easily replaceable wear components that can be exchanged with the furnace still ‘hot’, and encourage and maintain a stable freeze lining at the refractory hot face that maximizes the tapblock and refractory lifetime."

In order to overcome our reliance upon foreign energy sources for both crude supply and finished products, we must realize the goals proposed by Project Independence. In general this involves expanding production of existing and new oil, gas, and coal resources, utilizing and improving nuclear technology and the developing of new energy sources such as solar, geothermal, oil shale, tidal, wind and stimulation techniques. There is a continuing debate, both in the scientific community and the consuming public as to the potentiality of nuclear power generation being cost effective and environmentally and safety conscious. The development of new sources of energy does not occur overnight; it is rather a continuing effort in time and money to achieve the goal of providing energy to an ever increasing demand. The public has been accustomed to the availability of energy whenever and wherever it was needed. The era of "energy gluttony" has begun to fade into the realm of "energy awareness". Unfortunately, it required the action of another country to bring the picture that has been discussed many times in the past by energy suppliers into correct focus. Nevertheless, the public responded by conservation efforts to reduce energy wastefulness. Still, the demand for foreign importation of energy supplies is on the rise. What is our recourse? The largest known unexploited energy resource available in the United States is our coal resources. Moreover, the Department of the Interior has noted that 63 counties in Montana, Wyoming, and the Dakotas hold 60% of the nation's least expensive strip minable coal. This western coal is the most abundant and least costly Fossil Fuel in the United States. It is acknowledged that western coal is an important input in meeting the energy needs of our nation.

I HAVE been puzzled by two lines of thought'; one emanating from Washington, D. C., to the effect that we must all cheer up, that in a very short time, measured in terms of months, prices would begin to recover, business would become normal, and prosperity would continue on its way just as before the interruption of a year ago; and a second, coming from certain industrialists and economists, expressing fears that all commodity prices were in for a long downward trend, which would cause much unemployment, eventually drag down wages and so restrict purchasing power as to further aggravate the situation. One basis for the fear of a downward trend in commodity prices' is that ifter great wars a depression could last for something like 40 years-the downward trend to such a depression after our recent World War having been postponed for some reason or other; and the basis for another fear was that the production of gold was becoming less. I had 'also been trying for some time past to refresh my recollection as to how my ow11 particular lead interest climbed out of the depression of 1893; and as all the metals have had, and still have. relative values and prices, I can best express what I have in mind by talking principally about lead.

The stability of paste fill bulkheads forms an integral part of a successful paste fill system. Bulkheads are constructed at the draw points of open stopes to contain paste fill while the initial pour cures and forms a consolidated plug. Mobilization of uncured paste fill as a result of a bulkhead failure can lead to significant consequences, including endangering the safety of personnel, property damage and production losses and delays. The loading conditions in the paste fill and the resultant lateral loads on the bulkheads are complex and are dependent on many factors. This paper presents a case study of several paste fill bulkhead failures; the results of an in-situ pressure monitoring program to ascertain the pressure loads, and the subsequent paste fill bulkhead evaluation.

Grunerite asbestos (amosite) has been shown in epidemiological and experimental animal studies to cause lung cancer, mesothelioma and pulmonary fibrosis commonly referred to as asbestosis. An overview of the human and experimental animal studies describing the health hazards of grunerite asbestos (amosite) is presented. Of the many human studies describing the health hazards of asbestos, only three factories using mainly, if not exclusively, grunerite asbestos (amosite) have been studied. The first is a series of reports on a cohort of 820 workers from a plant located in Paterson, NJ. Among this cohort, 18.7% died of lung cancer and 17 mesotheliomas occurred. The Paterson factory closed in 1954 and moved to Tyler, Texas where it operated until 1972. Among the 1130 former workers in the Tyler plant 6 mesotheliomas were reported with 15.8% lung cancer mortality. The third grunerite asbestos (amosite) exposed cohort was an insulation board manufacturing facility in Uxbridge, United Kingdom. Here 17.1% of the workers died of lung cancer and 5 mesotheliomas occurred. The lung content from 48 Uxbridge workers was analyzed by analytical transmission electron microscopy for mineral fibers. The relationship between grunerite asbestos (amosite) concentrations in the lung correlated with grades of fibrosis and asbestos bodies and was lower than the concentration found in the cases with malignant tumors. The lung cancer cases contained more grunerite asbestos (amosite) than mesothelioma cases, and in the cases of non-alignant disease the concentrations were still lower. In both types of malignancies the concentration of grunerite asbestos (amosite) was very high-over a billion fibers per gram of dried lung tissue. Occupational exposure to airborne concentrations of between 14 and 100 fibers of grunerite asbestos (amosite) per milliliter after 20 year latency causes marked increases in lung cancer, mesothelioma and pulmonary fibrosis (asbestosis). © 2007 Elsevier Inc. In the early 1970s, it became a concern that exposure to the mineral fibers associated taconite ore processed in Silver Bay, Minnesota would cause asbestos-related disease including gastrointestinal cancer. At that time data gaps existed which have now been significantly reduced by further research. To further our understanding of the types of airborne fibers in Silver Bay we undertook a geological survey of their source the Peter Mitchell Pit, and found that there are no primary asbestos minerals at a detectable level. However we identified two non-asbestos types of fibrous minerals in very limited geological locales. Air sampling useful for risk assessment was done to determine the type, concentrations and size distribution of the population of airborne fibers around Silver Bay. Approximately 80% of the airborne fibers have elemental compositions consistent with cummingtonite-grunerite and the remaining 20% have elemental compositions in the tremolite-actinolite series. The mean airborne concentration of both fiber types is less than 0.00014 fibers per milliliter that is within the background level reported by the World Health Organization. We calculate the risk of asbestos-related mesothelioma and lung cancer using a variety of different pessimistic assumptions. (i) that all the non-asbestos fibers are as potent as asbestos fibers used in the EPA-IRIS listing for asbestos; with a calculated risk of asbestos-related cancer for environmental exposure at Silver Bay of 1 excess cancer in 28,500 lifetimes (or 35 excess cancers per 1,000,000 lifetimes) and secondly that taconite associated fibers are as potent as chrysotile the least potent form of asbestos. The calculated risk is less than 0.77 excess cancer case in 1,000,000 lifetimes. Finally, we briefly review the epidemiology studies of grunerite asbestos (amosite) focusing on the exposure conditions associated with increased risk of human mesothelioma. © 2008 Elsevier Inc.
