This is a geologic study of the U.S. Bureau of Mines Oil Shale Tract in the Piceance Creek Basin of Rio Blanco County, Colorado for the preparation of a set of detailed surface geologic maps, measurement and identification of joint attitudes and frequencies, and the classification and mapping of the soils of the area.

Hydraulic fracturing methods for production stimulation have become a common procedure in the oil and gas industry. Fracturing treatments are performed on wells of various potentials to help increase the production rate. In addition to the desire for increased production is the need to predict what increase might be expected. This knowledge is useful in economical treatment planning to accomplish the desired production goals for the well. Theoretical production increases due to horizontal radial fractures may be calculated using equations developed from mathematical analyses and electrical models.1,2,6 It also is possible to predict theoretical production increases due to vertical fractures using curves developed from electrical3 and mathematical models.8 However, these studies assumed that the vertical fracture height and the formation height were equal, which may not be true." In addition, the final fracture height through which fluid is produced may not be equal to the created height. The development of vertical fracture proppant transport relationships has made unrealistic the assumption that propped fracture height is equal to created fracture height. Through the use of published proppant transport equations,4'12 it is possible to calculate the height of a bed of propping agent deposited in a fracture of a given height. Assuming that the fluid flowing in the fracture moves through only the propped portion of that fracture (i.e., that the un-propped part of the fracture heals) it becomes essential to know how production increase varies with the ratio of propped fracture height to formation height. It should be recognized that future investigation may determine that the fracture does not heal completely and that a highly permeable channel exists over the deposited bed of proppant. The effect of this channel was not considered for the present study. The following analysis of experimental data allowed development of curves to determine theoretical production increases considering fracture height as a variable. Discussion In designing a fracturing stimulation treatment a number of variables must be considered. The size of the treatment, type of proppant used, proppant concentration, treatment fluid properties and well conditions are all factors affecting the dimensions and permeability of the fracture. Production increase due to a vertical fracture is affected by propped length, height, width and permeability of the fracture for a given set of formation conditions. "INTRODUCTION The South Hecla mine, one of the principal mines of the Alta United Mines Co., is situated at Alta in thee Little Cottonwood mining district, about 30 miles southeasterly from Salt Lake City, Utah. The mine has produced copper, lead, zinc, gold, and silver, and is reported to have been one 'of the principal sources of this country's bismuth from 1912 to 1925. The tungsten mineral, scheelite, has been found but has not been recovered. The extreme need for these minerals during World War II prompted an examination of the property by the Bureau of Mines and resulted in an unpublished report entitled ""The South Hecla Mine, Salt Lake County, Utah"" (fig. 1).A Bureau of Mines project 3301 was initiated, and operations were started early in 1943. The primary purpose of the project was to increase substantially the reserves of bismuth and tungsten ores. The critical situation in regard to lead, copper, and zinc developed during the early stages of the operation, and the work was expanded to include the development of ores 'of these metals.An investigation of 'the Albion, Rustler, and Greeley workings adjoining the South Hecla mine was made, and this work is also described (fig. 2); ACKNOWLEDGEMENTSIn Its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. "The Stoddard mine, Cheshire County, N. H., was explored by the Bureau of Mines in 1944 as a source of the strategic fluorite. It was reported that the vein persisted in the bottom of old workings and the geology of the immediate area indicated the possibility of finding additional lenses.In its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Nines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts pre¬liminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. Knickerbocker, chief, analyzes samples and performs beneficiation tests. Both these branches are under the supervision of Dr. R. S. Y.Property titles were not investigated.The fluorite deposits of Cheshire Count', H. H., have been known for many years, being reported by Jackson, (Geology and Mineralogy of New Hampshire, by Charles T, Jackson, 1844) and by Hitchcock, in1878 (Geology of Now Hampshire, vol. 3, 1878, by Charles H. Hitchcock). A large pit on the largest or east vein was mined by Lovat Frazer from about 1908 to 1917, This operation is reported to have produced approximately 3,500 tons of fluorspar. In 1917, the American Steel & Wire Co, took over the mine end is said to have produced 3,500 tons of fluorspar before relinquishing the lease in 1923.From 1935 to 1937 the New Hampshire Fluorspar Cc. operated the Stoddard mine, working chiefly on the most westerly of the three known veins on the property, as well as doing some preliminary work on the small central vein. In 1938, the United Feldspar 6 Minerals Corp. leased the mine, and less than 100 tons of fluorspar was produced from exploration and development work, No mining has been done since that time."

U.S. Bureau of Mines contract H0122053, "Improved Sensors and Fire Control Systems for Mining Equipment", was an investigative effort involving: ? Study of the fire problem on large mobile mining equipment ? Identification of equipment most prone to fire, to serve as a design case example ? Design of an improved fire protection system ? Demonstration of the developed system This effort was performed during the period June 1972 through May 1973, and was conducted in two phases. Phase I, June through November 1972, was devoted to identifying the fire problem and developing and evaluating design criteria. Phase II involved translating the design into hardware and demonstrating its effectiveness during actual fire tests, first on a wooden mockup of a truck, then on an operating truck at a working mine site.

Ordinary portland cement (OPC) is the key pozzalonic component of the concrete mix widely used as a construction material worldwide. B illions of tons of OPC are used in the construction industry each year. However, calcinations of limestone and silica that produce OPC also produce almost an equal amount of C O2 during the cement manufacturing process. Thus, OPC production accounts for nearly 7% of all anthropogenic C O2 emissions each year. The main objective of this study was to develop a geopolymer-based composite to be used as a substitute for OPC in concrete application to significantly lower the carbon footprint of the construction industry. A waste material produced during the coal combustion process was used as the main raw material for the geopolymer-based composite. It was mostly the nonmetallic content of the F-type fly ash produced from the combustion of bituminous coal. The authors envisioned extracting some of the valuable metal oxides from fly ash prior to using the major nonmetallic portion of the fly ash for geopolymer concrete application. The results obtained from this study showed that the compressive strength of geopolymer concrete compares favorably with that of conventional concrete prepared using OPC.

SINCE the Sixth Book has described the iron tools, the vessels and the machines used in mink, this Book will describe the methods of assaying1 ores; because it is desirable to first test them in order that the material mined may be advantageously smelted, or that the dross may be purged away and the metal made pure. Although writers have mentioned such tests, yet none of them have set down the directions for performing them, wherefore it is no wonder that those who come later have written nothing on the subject. By tests of this kind miners can determine with certainty whether ores contain any metal in them or not ; or if it has already been indicated that the ore contains one or more metals, the tests show whether it is much or little ; the miners also ascertain by such tests the method by which the metal can be separated from that part of the ore devoid of it ; and further, by these tests, they determine that part in which there is much metal from that part in which there is little. Unless these tests have been carefully applied before the metals are melted out, the ore cannot be smelted without great loss to the owners, for the parts which do not easily melt in the fire carry the metals off with them or consume them. In the last case, they pass off with the fumes ; in the other case they are mixed with the slag and furnace accretions, and in such event the owners lose the labour which they have spent in preparing the furnaces and the crucibles, and further, it is necessary for them to incur fresh expenditure for fluxes and other things. Metals, when they have been melted out, are usually assayed in order that we may ascertain what pro- portion of silver is in a centumpondium of copper or lead, or what quantity of gold is in one libra of silver ; and, on the other hand, what proportion of copper or lead is contained in a centumpondium of silver, or what quantity of silver is contained in one libra of gold. And from this we can calculate whether it will be worth while to separate the precious metals from the base metals, or not. Further, a test of this kind shows whether coins are good or are debased ; and readily detects silver, if the coiners have mixed more than is lawful with the gold ; or copper, if the coiners have alloyed with the gold or silver more of it than is allowable. Coined VUCA by the US Army War College, these four words define the ?turbulence? and ?continuous white water? that the business literature has been documenting for the last decade. This VUCA world became even more relevant to business in 2007 when the Institute for the Future fellow Bob Johansen published the idea of transforming VUCA into Vision, Understanding, Clarity, and Agility. We call this VUCA Prime (VUCA'), and place an infinity loop (8) between them to show their dynamic interaction. This paper presents an exploration of the impact of VUCA 8 VUCA' on business and the conditions under which these dynamic forces help to successfully navigate change.

In the premining stage of engineering design, the only available data are obtained from core drilling. It is often not sufficient for a realistic design of strata control. During the development, an access to the geological formation is created, enabling in situ testing. Obtained data can be utilized accordingly to improve preliminary design. The available methods for testing are described with emphasis on their application for a longwall system. The optimum design ensuring continuous operation of the high output longwalls is critical because their downtime is very expensive. Optimization of ground control measures also has the potential for substantial savings by elimination of unnecessary support.

Based on the results of in-situ observations and physical model analysis, a computer simulation method, FEAEBP, has been developed to predict the behaviors of main roof breakage in longwall mining by considering it as a Kirchhoff plate on Winkler elastic foundation. This method in used to investigate the initiation, and development of the breaking process of main roof and its displacement field before and after its breakage. In this paper the simulation method is introduced, characteristics of the displacement field of the main roof is discussed and monitoring variation of the displacement field of the main roof in a Chinese longwall face is demonstrated.

DURING the year, the' Institute has made the most remarkable growth in its history. Our actual increase in membership was 1816 and therefore was 80 per cent. larger than any previous year. Even without expectation of any abnormal growth, we should pass in the year 1921 the 10;000 mark. The causes of this increased growth are not far to seek.. They lie in the widening vision of the Institute's work, not only in its relation to' the profession but as an avenue of service to the nation as a whole. The Institute is today in the first rank of influence among public institutions in the country. During this year we have, for the first time in many years, had a ?deficit of some $3000 in our finances. The sum is not important, but it- does indicate the tendency of the times, and that is the high cost of living:' The increase in our expenses lay, to the largest degree, on the publishing side of the Institute's work. If we compare the year 1918, as a fairly repre¬sentative year, with that of 1920, we find that the costs of issuing the' Institute's publications, after deducting the income received from these publications, shows a .net increase of about $33,000. for the year. This has been to some degree due to the enlarged membership but to a large degree due to the cost of the paper and printing.

The U.S. economy and, consequently, the demand for minerals grew at more moderate rates in 1995 compared with stronger performances the previous year. Demand for metals such as steel and copper was relatively stable. For example, the decline in steel consumed in motor vehicle manufacturing (reflecting lower vehicle sales) for the first half of 1995 was offset by an increase in steel consumed in construction during the same period. More detailed information on events, trends, and issues in the mineral and material sector Is presented below and in the commodity sections that follow. Overall Performance The value of processed materials of mineral origin produced in the United States during 1995 was estimated to be $395 billion, an increase of almost 10% compared with 1994. The estimated value of U.S. raw nonfuel minerals production in 1995 was $38 billion, about 7% more than in 1994. The value of U.S. minerals production has increased in 30 of the last 35 years.

Deep open-pit mines are becoming increasingly common in the highly mineralized arctic and sub-arctic regions. Air inversion is a frequent occurrence in these regions, and is exacerbated by the natural topography of an open-pit mine. Due to such inversions, the air quality in open-pit mines deteriorates very rapidly. Transport of gaseous pollutants under arctic air inversion is complex and involves an interaction between flow, thermal and convective transport systems. This paper discusses the construction and validation of a three-dimensional model that simulate the flow of air and the transport of gaseous contaminants in an arctic open-pit mine and the effect of low influent velocity and large gust velocities on the contaminants profiles in the mine. It was found that while higher velocities may remove contaminants from the pit bottom, they may not remove the contaminants from the pit entirely, necessitating artificial mitigation measures.

Lithium minerals occur predominantly in pegmatites that contain mineral assemblages derived from the crystallization of post- magmatic fluids or from the metasomatic action of residual peg- matitic fluids. They have been the traditional sources of raw material for ceramic and chemical industries. With the discovery of the Searles Lake deposits, brines became new sources of lithium, and, today, two brine deposits satisfy nearly one-half of the free world demand for lithium chemicals. Indeed, lithium production from pegmatites has been superseded by brines sources. In the United States, the brines of Clayton Valley, NV, have been exploited since 1964 by Cyprus Foote Mineral Company, a subsidiary of Cyprus Minerals Company. In Chile, Sociedad Chilena de Litio Ltda., an affiliate of Cyprus Minerals Company, is now producing lithium carbonate from the brines of the Salar de Atacama. Recently identified brine deposits suggest that these may well become the prime sources of lithium chemicals. In Bolivia, the government is negotiating the rights to exploit the brines of the Salar de Uyuni. The Salar del Hombre Muerto in Argentina is being evaluated as a future center of chemical production. The brines of the Great Salt Lake of Utah, the Smackover Formation, and the Imperial Valley geothermal field have been defined as important resources of lithium. In Tibet, high concentrations of lithium have been reported in several saline lakes. In the People's Republic of China, lithium may be produced from the brines of the Dabusan playa in the Qinghai Basin. The 1950s saw a great number of lithium companies develop. However, following the termination of the Atomic Energy Commission purchase program in 1959, several companies, such as Maywood Chemical Co., American Lithium Chemicals, and Quebec Lithium Corp., were forced to close their operations. Nevertheless, with the development of new applications in glass ceramics, air conditioning systems, synthetic rubber, and metallurgy (aluminumpotlines), the lithium industry grew steadily. With the potential application of lithium metal in batteries, nuclear reactors, and fuel cells, a steady growth can be foreseen. New products and new applications are likely to stimulate exploration for expanded reserves as well as the search for new sources from which lithium could be extracted economically. Presently identified reserves and production capacity are sufficient to satisfy the conventional market growth of lithium.

"INTRODUCTION The injection of water into partly depleted-oil-bearing formations as a means of supplying additional energy to flow oil wells now is recognized by the petroleum industry as an effective method of increasing the recovery of oil. The benefits to be derived from water-flooding oil sands were discovered accidentally more than 4o years ago, when oil producers in the Pennsylvania and western New York fields observed suustantial increases, in oil-production rates when water leaked past corroded casings of old wells into producing sands. This observation prompted some operators purposely to perforate or slit the casings opposite the producing formation in some of their wells to permit water to enter the formation. However, as many operators viewed the practice with skepticism and considered it to be in violation of oil-conservation principles,- systematic water-flooding was not initiated until the Pennsylvania legislature, in 1921, enacted a law authorizing water-flooding of oil sands in that State.Although water-flooding has been practiced in a haphazard manner for more than 25 years in Chautauqua and Montgomery Counties, Kansas, planned or systematic water-flooding in that State had its inception in 1935, when the legislature, following the example of Pennsylvania, also passed a lava/ authorizing water-flooding. The early operations and, to some extent, those still, practiced in the Chautauqua-Montgomery area consisted in raising or perforating the casing to allow water from upper strata to gravitate into underlying oil-producing formations. The extent to which this type of water-flooding affected petroleum production in the old stripper area of eastern Kansas is not known, but it is known to have increased oil production ap¬preciably from many leases.Following enactment of the law permitting water-flooding in Kansas, three operators inaugurated, in that same year, three organized flooding projects in three different counties of the southeastern part of the State. The first organized project on record was that of the York State Oil Co. in the Seeley pool, Greenwood County. On this project, the injection was started on May 15, 1935, into the Bartlesville sandstone at a top depth of 1940 feet."

PCF?, or Penetrating Cone Fracture, is a propellant-based technique for rock excavation, which has significant potential for the mechanization of narrow-vein mining. The technique is currently being developed for use in the narrow-vein flat-dipping gold and platinum deposits in South Africa in conjunction with major mining companies. The technique is also applicable to steeply dipping vein deposits, such as those found in North America, Australia and elsewhere. The implementation of PCF? in South Africa to date is reviewed and plans for the introduction of PCF? excavation in other areas are highlighted.

TRANSFER to the Bureau of Mines of the responsibility for conservation and production of helium, and announcement that a proposal has been made to the President for commercial operation of the Los Angeles has attracted new attention to the helium program of the Government. The matter is one in which mining engineers, and the mining industry in general, have a peculiar interest. Helium is a byproduct of the petroleum and natural gas industry. It is found in certain of the natural gases which have themselves been discovered, in the main, in the search for oil. If it is to be produced on a large scale, the conservation and development of the fields will necessarily be done by the men of the oil and gas industry. There is no known or expected source of supply of quantities of commercial importance save in the natural gas fields. Not all gas wells supply helium and none of them supply it in important percentages. If it were necessary to prospect a field, develop it, lay pipe lines and build production plants for the helium alone, the cost would be prohibitive. On that basis helium would necessarily be restricted to essential war uses, where cost is subordinate to need. As a byproduct of the natural gas in certain, at least, of the fields in the United States there is distinct reason for anticipating that it may be produced in amounts and at a cost that will permit its regular use in commercial airships.

NEW YORK'S largest hotel, the Pennsylvania, will be filled with mining and oil men and metallurgists the third week of February when some 3000 AIME members, their wives, and guests will gather for the Institute's 1948 Annual Meeting-its 166th general meeting. Except for the usual Sunday afternoon and evening sessions of the Mineral Industry Education Division at the Columbia University Men's Faculty Club, the big assembly will be under one top and members will not this year have to consult compass and map to find their next session. Possibly enervated by the stupendous effort of the Anniversary Celebration last spring and the plethora of highly successful fall meetings, the various committees have been a trifle slow in arranging their social and technical programs, but in mid December as we go to press there is already much to report indicative of substantial fare and high interest. The definite timetable schedule will appear in the February M&M.

Stress has a significant effect on the stability of pillars. In order to get an accurate picture of pillar stability, one needs information not only on the primary Stress distribution but also on all the Subsequent Stress changes as time passes. Sonic methods are some of the fastest, most economical and least destructive means of stress prediction. The wave propagation velocity has long been applied to the investigation of the upper mantle and crust stress. Recently, it has also been applied to the prediction of rock bursts and to mine site investigations. Another parameter for investigating stresses in rocks is the attenuation coefficient. Attenuation has been observed to be more sensitive to stress changes than wave velocity; however, the measurement of attenuation is more difficult than that of wave velocity. In this paper, the mechanism of sonic attenuation in rock is reviewed. Both the velocity and the attenuation of sound waves in five different rock types under various stress fields were examined in the laboratory. It was found that for a specific rock type the relationship between the velocity ratio and stress, as well as that between the attenuation coefficient ratio and stress, can be expressed by simplified second order polynomial equations.Research showed the attenuation coefficient to be more sensitive to stress change than the velocity ratio. A field investigation method was proposed using a Schmidt hammer as a repeatable energy source. Initial trials appeared to show that monitoring by the wave attenuation method gave more repeatable data than monitoring wave velocity.
