The fourth Teetered Bed Separator (TBS) has just been installed in Australia, and trials have been run in many sites. There is a growing recognition of the potential advantages of using TBS technology to treat coal in the ?3+0.25 mm size range, at cut points below 1.60. From these activities, there has been a substantial growth in knowledge with respect to application engineering and operational functions. The paper briefly describes the installations, including flowsheets, and so provides a background to the potential deployment of TBS technology. There are a large number of potential applications for TBS technology, including treatment of fine ROM coal in new plants, or in upgrade situations for re-processing of spiral product, or scavenging coal from coarse tailings. As well, cost effective capacity upgrades are possible by using TBS units for treating the sands size fraction. Issues arising from Australian TBS installations and application engineering are also discussed.

This survey is one of a series of Bureau of Mines publications designed to serve the needs of Government and industry for comprehensive information on mineral commodities and activities. Copper, a versatile metal, has been vital to all civilizations from pre-historic times to the present. Its essential value in antiquity and until the nineteenth century arose from its malleability and ease of working, its corrosion resistance and durability, its attractive colors in alloyed and unalloyed forms, and, of course, its availability. The principal uses were for tools, utensils, vessels, weapons, pipe, statuary and other objects of art, and for building and architectural purposes where formability, permanence, and beauty were necessary qualities. Utilization of copper based on these physical and mechanical properties has grown tremendously for commercial, structural, mechanical, architectural, and art items; and its capacity for forming numerous alloys has led to a myriad of applications from miniature copper and brass eyelets to huge bronze battleship propellers. The early nineteenth century marks the epoch of the greatest use of copper, transmitting electrical energy. This particular property of copper is fundamental to the spectacular growth of the electrical industry and all associated industries relying on electricity for power, light, and heat. More than half of all copper produced is used for transmission of electricity.

The Bureau of Mines has evaluated the potential availability of silver from 436 mines and deposits in 41 market economy countries (MEC?s) comprising five major economic categories of deposits: predominantly silver deposits and predominantly zinc, lead, copper, and gold deposits. This study evaluated the long-term cost and availability of primary silver production from 53 producing and 13 nonproducing predominantly silver properties in 11 MEC's and estimated the total recoverable silver from 370 properties as a coproduct or byproduct of zinc, lead, copper, or gold production. This study resulted in estimates of a demonstrated resource of 5.99 billion tr oz of recoverable silver as of January 1984. Of this total, 23.5 pet is in the 66 mines and deposits classified as predominantly silver properties. The largest quantity of recoverable silver, 43.9 pct, lies in the 121 properties classified as predominantly zinc, with 26.5 pct in 120 properties classified as predominantly copper, 4.1 pet in 21 predominantly lead properties, and 2.0 pct in 108 predominantly gold properties. At current silver prices, the economics of silver production favor silver that is a byproduct or coproduct of zinc, lead, copper, or gold, and much of the silver production in the United States from the predominantly silver mines is at an economic disadvantage in comparison with silver production in other countries.

In conjunction with the research study of the Coronation Mine recommended by the National Advisory Committee on Research in the Geo-logical Sciences and coordinated by the Geological Survey of Canada, Canadian Aero Service Limited per-formed a detailed, low-altitude air-borne survey over a block of ground encompassing the .Coronation Mine. The in-phase/out-of-phase air-borne electromagnetic data are com-pared with "horizontal-loop" ground data with reference to: size and nature of conductors detected; criteria in selection of targets for drilling. In-formation provided by Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company on their drilling of the numerous conductors in the area is employed in this comparison. The merits of combining a sensitive airborne magnetometer with an air-borne electromagnetic unit are discussed. The magnetic data are considered very important in assessing conductors as prospects for commercial sulphida deposits in this area of numerous electromagnetic anomalies. Another major aluminum company announced intentions to follow other domestic producers recent price actions by raising its unalloyed ingot quotes by 3¢ to 44¢ per pound, effective June 1, 1976. COBALT: All final data for 1975 are included in the table for cobalt on page 23. Demand in March increased significantly for the second month in a row, signaling a recovery from the previous year's relatively low demand levels. Imports of cobalt tripled in March over those of February. This should partially offset reduced sales of cobalt excesses from the National Stockpile. Import projections for the next several months have been lowered because transportation difficulties in Zaire are expected to result in reduced shipments.

But eventually even South Africa had to heed the dictates of trade and the obvious interests of its great gold-mining industry. In December, 1932, South Africa's currency severed its golden bonds. "The most important metals in the jewelry sector are undoubtedly gold and silver. As a result of workmanship work done in the jewelry industry, the tiny metal and jewel fragments and metallic powders are scattered. Given the prices of gold and silver on the market, the dust that emanates from these workshops is of great importance. Gold recycling has become as important as raw material production within the mass market and gold production industry. In 2016, 29% of the world gold supply has been obtained through recycled gold production. Waste derived from jewelry activity is included in this category, and represents an essential component of this percentage. In the scope of this study, the recovery possibilities of Au and Ag from jewelry sweeps floor sample was investigated using flotation method. In the experiments, optimum pH value, particle size, the effect of dispersant, type and amount of reagent were investigated. As a result of these studies, it was determined that the optimum pH value was 6.5 and the particle size was -212 microns. It was observed that the most suitable reactive combination was Aero 242 and Aerophine 3418A and Na2SiO3 has no positive effect on recovery of Au and Ag as a dispersant agent. As a result of tests, a final concentrate containing 268 ppm Au and 2122 ppm Ag was obtained with 81.4% and 74.5% recovery respectively. INTRODUCTION Because of the softness of pure gold, it is usually alloyed with base metals for use in jewelry, altering its hardness and ductility, melting point, color and other properties. On the other hand, gold has some special chemical properties which in normal conditions, don’t react with water, dry or humid air, oxygen, ozone, nitrogen, hydrogen, fluorine, iodine, sulfur and hydrogen. In these days, gold is used in different sectors like jewelry, electronics, finances and investing, dentistry, medicine, aerospace, awards & status symbols. According to Deutsche Bank Research, the primary usage of gold is jewelry. It has been used to make ornament and jewelry for thousands of years. In this sector craftsmen learned that alloying gold with other metals like copper, platinum and silver to increase gold’s durability. Alloying gold with other metals changes the color of the products. Another significant sector of gold is electronics. Modern electronics want the use of noble metals, like gold, especially in the areas of information processing, telecommunications, and military and space electronics (Habashi, 1997). Electronic devices use very low voltages and currents which are easily interrupted by corrosion or tarnish at the contact points. Gold is the highly efficient conductor that can carry these tiny currents and remain free of corrosion. Electronic components made with gold are highly reliable. Gold is used in connectors, switch and relay contacts, soldered joints and connecting wires. Every sophisticated electronic device have a considerable amount of gold. This includes cell phones, calculators, personal digital assistants, GPS units, and other small electronic devices. Most large electronic appliances such as television sets also contain gold. Humankind has known silver since prehistoric times like gold because silver occurs in native form. The metal is found in the Earth's crust in the pure, free elemental form native, as an alloy with gold and other metals, and in mineral such as argentite. Most silver is produced as a byproduct of copper, gold, lead, and zinc refining. Silver is very soft metal like gold also, it is the highest electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, and the lowest electrical contact resistance of all metals (Habashi, 1997). This paper is a revision of Information Circular 7380, by D. Harrington and J. H. East, Jr., published in 1946, entitled ?Safe Storage, Handling, and Use of Commercial Explosives in Metal Mines, Nonmetallic Mines, and Quarries.? Issued soon after the close of World War II, this earlier circular described the unprecedented increase in the production and use of commercial explosives during the war as a result of expanded industry and the tremendous demand f or metals and minerals. In the years following World War II, the production and use of commercial explosives in the United States have continued to rise. Hence, the Bureau of Mines presents these revised figures through 1952. In rewriting this Wormation circular, most of the text prepared by Harrington and East has been retained, with newer statistical information compiled by Seth T. Reese, Accident Analysis Branch, and V. E. Wrenn, of the same branch.

Federal Regulations require MESA to regulate the exposure of workers to inhalation hazards in the surface work areas of coal mining and processing operations. (1) The purposes of this study are listed below: 1. Determination of candidate inhalation contaminants for surface work areas of coal mining and processing operations. 2. Selection of appropriate sampling and analytical methods. 3. Performance of qualitative surveys of 56 representative coal mining and processing facilities. 4. Preparation of handbook to provide guidance for inspectors sampling for these contaminants. This report describes the work which was done to accumulate the information which was used in preparing the inspector's handbook. Specifically, this report contains descriptions of the surveys which were performed, analytical results obtained from these surveys, findings and conclusions, and recommendations for additional research.

"Introduction.Several hundred thousand open lights are daily carried in coal mines of the United States, each lamp being a menace to life and property through fire or explosion. They have been responsible for many disasters in the past, and will be again. Flame safety lamps have been available for over a hundred years, but during the last ten years safe and practical electric lamps have been perfected. These have eliminated many of the flame safety lamps, and in a few mines have replaced open flame lamps. But there are still more than twice as many open lamps as electric lamps in our mines, and the open lamps should be discarded in favor of an approved type of electric lamp. There are several electric miners' lamps which have been approved by the Bureau of Mines for safety and efficiency, give good light, and are easily maintained and carried, some flame safety lamps will always be used, hut mostly for detecting gas; although they might be supplanted if some simple, reliable, and cheap gas detector were developed.Explosion Hazards from Open Lights.An open light and gas*** constitute a vicious hazard; while if there be coal dust present in the vicinity the consequences are multiplied many times. An open light and black blasting powder also constitute an explosion hazard, vividly attested by several serious disasters."

This paper is one of r series published by the Bureau of Mines dealing with the mineral resources of western South Dakota. The mining of pegmatite minerals is described mainly from the standpoint of the feldspar industry, as most of the other .pegmatite minerals produced are recovered as byproducts from the mining of feldspar. Feldspar is shipped from the Black Hills by three companies, all operating in the southern Hills. Because the pegmatites of the northern Hills, represented by tae Tinton area, have been described in other papers3/ of this series, the present paper is confined to the pegmatite dikes of the southern Black Hills. Emphasis is placed upon the current activity in pegmatite mining; little attention is given to the history of many famous mines in the district, and information concerning them may be obtained by consulting resorts cited in the bibliography. The field work was carried on from July 28 to October 15, 1938. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The geology of the Black Hills has been studied almost continuously during the last half century. A wealth of literature has attempted to explain the geology and mineralogy of the pegmatite dikes of this region. The success of any blast is dependent on the accuracy of the blast design and the field controls used on the shot. This point cannot be over emphasized because when the geometry is not measured and/or field controls are not properly implemented, it can often have devastating effects on the final blast results. Thus drilling accuracy, tiont row burden control, explosive confinement, energy distribution, explosive selection, timing and structural geology become critical parameters in the design of successful blasts. Understanding the actual dynamics of the blast and why certain results were achieved is the fast step in optimizing a blast design. As stated by R. Frank Chiappetta, “Of all the blast monitoring systems available today, high speed videography still remains as the best stand alone instrumentation system for blast diagnostics.” Over the past years I have analyzed hundreds of blasts using either high-speed lowcams (500 frames per second) cameras or standard digital (30 frames per second). These analyses confirm, without a doubt, that shot geometry, in combination with structural geology, is the most important factor in overall blast results. Drilling accuracy is the single most important component in efficient blasting. Having equal mass associated with an equivalent energy is the basis in which blasts are designed. When drilling inaccuracy or borehole deviation occurs, not only is the energy unevenly distributed, but the basis of all design calculations becomes invalid. Over the past several years, quarry and mining operations have employed the use of boretracking measuring devices to measure borehole deviation and hole toe locations. In cases of operations using top hammer drills, it was discovered that the amount of deviation was significant and far greater than they believed they had. Set up error, improper drilling techniques and bit wear were some of the contributing factors. Through video anaysis of boretracked blasts, blast results were directly linked to drilling ..accuracy. The comparisons here took into account blast design, energy factors and hole sequencing.

"The Republic of Colombia on December 30, 1919, enacted a new petroleum law. The Act is expressly limited to mineral oil, natural gas, bitumen, wax and fossilized resin and to asphalt intended for export.The law is not only intended to encourage local investors, but to attract foreign capitalists for oil development. Provision is made for a special edition ion of the law in such languages as the Government may deem necessary to give it extensive circulation within the country and abroad. The published editions must contain the provisions of the law relating to alienship and naturalization.All public lands, or what are termed unclaimed lands, are open to flee prospecting for the purpose of discovering the deposits named in the law, A prospector must obtain from the Government a, license which binds him to deliver to the Government topographic plans of the lands prospected, together with reports of their prospective yielding capacity. This license does not vest the li¬censee with any preferential right for contracting or leasing and may be drawn by the Government at any time.If a discovery is made by a licensee of any of the deposits named and he desires to exploit the same, he must present a memorial or application to the Ministry of Public Works, stating:- (a) the location and municipal district in which deposit beds are found; (b) boundaries of the zone of exploitation, which shall not be more than 5,000 or less than 1,000 hectares; (c) the names and nationality of all persons for whom the lease is sought and the action and time within which,they propose to make the exploitation; (d) the name of the corporation and its legal representatives with their residences; (e) if an alien, he must state his willingness to comply with the law relative to alienship and naturalization; (f) agreement to abide by all of the provieions of the law with regard to Government supervision, payment of taxes, rate of lease and causes of forfeiture; (g) the rate of rent or royalty that the applicant offers to pay, together with any other circumstances that may make the proposed lease advantageous to the Nation."

The general distribution of metal deposits in the Canadian Cordillera can be related to its tectonic evolution. The Canadian Cordillera is naturally divisible into five longitudinal tectonic belts within which rocks are broadly similar in type, age and history. From west to east they are the Insular, Coast Crystalline, Intermontane, Omineca and Eastern Marginal belts. Seven classes of metal deposits in the Canadian Cordillera are defined and their characteristics described. These classes are skarn, porphyry, massive sulphide, stratiform, magmatic, copper in basic lavas, and vein deposits. Maps showing the distribution of medal and metal-group concentrations serve to illustrate the relations in space and time between mineralization and geologic evolution.

The major purpose of this bulletin, as indicated in the preface by Dr. John W. Finch, Director of the Bureau of Mines, is to give a critical review of the coal-mining methods used in the principal producing countries of Europe, to describe the reasons underlying the adoption of these methods, and to contrast them with coal-mining methods employed in the United States. The report includes discussions of various subjects intimately related to coal mining, such as geology of the principal coal fields; production and resources of the several countries; mine safety and health research; Government mining regulations; mine inspection and rescue procedure; safety lamps; fixed lighting methods under-ground; testing electric motors, mining machines, and mining explosives for permissibility; and special mining hazards, such as explosions of gas and coal dust, mine fires, instantaneous gas outbursts, ground movement and surface subsidence, and bumps. Commercial, economic, and labor problems of European coal mining, including miners' output, wages, and social-insurance schemes, as well as cost of mining, prices of coal, etc., are briefly described. It will be noted that data on most subjects are not given for Russia, which has become an important coal-producing country, owing to the lack of reliable published information concerning Russian coal mining.

During the early stages of the mining industry of the United States an apparently inexhaustible supply of high-quality, easily accessible coal made the product cheap and the attendant mining methods wasteful of recoverable coal. Because coal from advance places could be mined with less effort and a large outwit obtained as the entries advanced, much of the coal left in pillars to support the roof was lost. Squeezes often developed in these mined-over areas, or, if pillars were of sufficient size to-prevent squeeze, the roof would be so weakened by long exposure that any pillar recovery was extremely hazardous. As the value of unmined coal increased, a high recovery of the available coal became necessary. Numerous plans were tried during the period that followed, some of the methods proving successful while others were complete failures or only partly successful. As a better knowledge was pained of the roof strata and its behavior, however, pillar mining became more successful and methods suited to special roof conditions were developed.

Duties on Lead Imports from Mexico. - On September 15, the President signed Proclamation 4792 suspending concessions formerly granted as of January 1 on red lead imported from Mexico. The Proclamation also increased the duty payable on litharge imported from Mexico from 3% ad valorem to 3.5% ad valorem, effective September 15. Appeal of Lead Standards. - The U.S. Court of Appeals for Washington, D.C., rejected petitions by the Lead Industries Assoc. and St. Joe Minerals Corp. for a review of standards promulgated by EPA and OSHA. The Lead Industries Assoc. reportedly will appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court on the basis of the "benzene" and "cotton dust" decisions. Scheduled implementation of standards will continue during the appeal.

The history of firedamp is the same as that of coal: The initial stage was the accumulation of vegetation, which was converted into peat under certain local conditions, then lignite, bituminous coal, and finally anthracite. These deposits ceased to increase owing to inundation that deposited earthy sediment, sometimes as much as several tens of meters (several tens of yards). The vegetable matter, whether it was covered with sediment or not, began to ferment. The basic organic components of the vegetable matter are: Cellulose, lignin, and wax and resin in varying proportions, according to the different kinds of vegetable matter. There are, in addition, some impurities, generally mineral.

The world’s first copper electrorefinery started production in 1869 at Burry Port in South Wales. Built within the Pembrey Copper Works which had commenced smelting operations in 1849, the new refinery was based on principles described in the British patents issued to J.B. Elkington in 1865 and 1869. Refining principles and practices pioneered there were key to the foundation of modern electro-refining practice in what is now a dominant international industry producing over 16 Mt of electrical grade copper annually. This paper explores the background to this pioneering application of the new, early 19th century, science of “electro-metallurgy” and examines its links to the contemporary decorative electro-plating industry and to the shortcomings of 19th century fire refining. The beginnings and early years of the Pembrey electrorefinery are briefly discussed in relation to the quality, applications and pyrometallurgy of copper at the time. More than a decade would elapse before the birth of the electrical age: the Pembrey refinery may be seen as one of its vital precursors. It all, the year of the first electrolytic copper refinery established for 15 countries is included. These 15 countries now produce more that 70% of world refined copper (for 2018). INTRODUCTION In the 1840s, the new science of ‘electro-metallurgy’, a term coined by Smee in 1841 (Smee, 1841), was being adapted to the decorative electro-deposition of silver in a thin, bright adherent coating that was evidently equal in appearance to traditional silverware (Williams, 1976). Chief among innovative manufacturers of decorative objects who took up the new art of silver electro-plating was the acclaimed firm of G.R. Elkington and Co. of Birmingham, England. The company, which vigorously developed all aspects of electro-metallurgy for the decorative trade, entered the field of ‘electrotyping’, a technique in which the surface features of a mould are copied on an electro-deposited copper layer which, when stripped off, can be used to reproduce an imprint of the mould. In essence, it is a form of casting by electrodeposition, invented in 1837 independently by Jacobi in Russia (Pavlova, 1968) and Spencer in England (Wyatt, 1851).
