Current production costs and market conditions in the potash industry of the Carlsbad area were studied to determine the potential values of the potash mineral resource that would be lost or foregone if the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) facility is constructed on the proposed site in that area. The purpose of the WIPP project is to investigate the possibility of developing a nuclear waste disposal plant in the salt formations at the site. Analyses were made of all potash deposits determined to be in the site. Mining and processing under the most favorable recovery systems were considered. Value determinations were based upon estimated operating and capital costs of current mine-mill operations in the Carlsbad area. This study was made for the Energy Research and Development Administration (ERDA) by members of the Federal Bureau of Mines Minerals Availability System staff.

H. H. Hausner (Sylvania Electric Products Inc., Bayside, N. Y.)—I tested the 18-8 stainless steel powder described by Grobe and Roberts and the results were excellent. The powder was compacted and sintered in purified hydrogen to a very low density (approximately 20 pct and more porosity). Where the other powders show very little ductility when sintered to such a low density, the described stainless steel was surprisingly high in ductility. I would appreciate it if the authors could give us some data on a similar powder but without silicon and also data on 430 stainless steel powder. H. S. Kalish (Sylvania Electric Products lnc., Bay-side, N. Y.)—I should like to verify the excellent results obtained by Grobe and Roberts with their pre-alloyed stainless steel powder. It seems to me, however, that their data are conservative and that even better densities and higher tensile strength can be obtained with these powders by the selection of proper particle size fractions. The accompanying data were obtained by sintering compacts pressed from the powder made by Vanadium-Alloys Steel Co. to 0.8 in. in diam about % in. high in a cylindrical double action die without the use of lubricant. The compacts were sintered for 1 hr at 2370°F in hydrogen purified by passing it through a Deoxo unit (palladium catalyst) and a Lectrodryer. Even the density obtained using the as-received (—100 mesh) compacted at 40 tsi was quite high as was the hardness. This indicates that by increasing the sintering temperature slightly above 2350°F the coining and subsequent secondary sintering operation can be avoided. With the — 325 mesh fraction, however, very much higher density can be obtained and a high hardness. I have no tensile data to present, but I feel that it is not too optimistic to expect. that unusually high tensile strengths and good ductility can be obtained in this sintered material on the basis of the density and hardness data. The sintered stainless steel made by the above-described methods came out of the furnace very bright and clean. The purified hydrogen atmosphere is important in sintering stainless steel to reduce the oxide present in the powder. The result of such a sintering is good densification and good ductility of the sintered product. G. A. Roberts (authors' reply)—We are greatly indebted to Messrs. Hausner and Kalish for their discussions of our paper. Their encouraging remarks are greatly appreciated and their confirmatory data will do much to add to the value of the paper. At the present time it is impossible to provide complete data on a similar stainless steel powder without silicon, but we do know that, in general, the properties are slightly inferior. Data on such a powder and on other stainless steel types are to be published in the near future.

Ghomroud water conveyance tunnel project is under construction using shield Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) for a total length in excess of 50 km. Phase 1 of the project included 36 km of tunnel divided into four lots (1, 2, 3, and 4) of nine km each. Lots 3 and 4 of this tunnel for a total length of 18 km were combined into one award and have been constructed using a double shield (DS) TBM or one path system. Extreme ground convergence in some sections of the tunnel has stalled TBM performance in early reaches, due to face collapse and shield jammings. This paper presents the latest update on the tunnel progress and impact of ground convergence on machine performance based on the information obtained from field observations. Also, the method and results of tunnel convergence measurements were studied in conjunction with geological parameters and an attempt was made to correlate TBM operational parameters and ground convergence. The result of the analysis indicates a good correlation between machine?s operational parameter and tunnel convergence and can be used as an indicator of the potential for high rates of convergence. An early warning on ground convergence is essential for taking precautionary measures to avoid TBM jamming and related long delays and costs.

THE solid nonmetallic inclusions present to some extent in all commercial steels have been variously designated. In early references they were usually called slag inclusions, and this terminology is still retained to some extent. On the premise that all nonmetallic matter produced in a metallurgical process is slag, this can be justified. We have come to think of slag, how- ever, in a more restricted sense, and calling these particles slag inclusions is further objectionable because it fosters the erroneous concept that they are actually incorporated portions of furnace slag. Rarely is this true. The term sonims (coined from solid nonmetallic impurities) was proposed many years ago but never came into common use. In general, the term non- metallic inclusions seems to be satisfactory and adequate. NATURE AND CONSTITUTION OF NONMETALLIC INCLUSIONS From the standpoint of origin, inclusions fall naturally into two classes: (1) those occurring as a result of reactions taking place in the body of molten or solidifying metal and (2) those resulting from mechanical incorporation of refractories or other materials with which molten steel comes in contact. The former are by far the more numerous and have been called indigenous, natural, or native inclusions. The latter are by their very nature sporadic in occurrence and have been called exogenous, accidental, adventitious, or foreign inclusions. They are often referred to as the "slag-stringer" type, though here also the material is not likely to be furnace slag. Substances Found in Inclusions. Nonmetallic inclusions are composed principally of oxides and sulfides but carbides and nitrides sometimes play an important role. In the case of indigenous inclusions the reactions by which these particles are precipitated from molten or solidifying steel may be caused by: (1) oxidation such as may occur during refining or during tapping and teeming, (2) deoxidation by added alloys, (3) change

The distribution of sulfur in iron was found to be dependent upon the time and temperature of the treatment as well as the chemical composition of the sulfide. With higher temperatures, the sulfide phase spreads more extensively between the iron grains. A complete network, however, does not form until approximately 1300°C (2372°F), ot which temperature the dihedral angle approaches zero. Silicon has little effect on this change. Aluminum, oxygen, and manganese all modify the temperature of sulfide network formation to a higher value. The microstructures which result and have significance in relation to hot-shortness are discussed. SULFIDE inclusions in steel were recognized by metallurgists before the turn of the century. Considerable attention has been paid to them, and numerous studies have been made on the working properties of steel as affected by them. It has been suggested that ho t-shortness of steel is due to the presence of an enveloping liquid sulfide film at the grain boundaries of the steel in the range of the hot-working temperatures. However, several facts have been observed in commercial steels which do not seem to be completely consistent with this explanation: 1) the frequent absence of continuous films of sulfide as observed under the microscope, 2) the absence of hot-shortness in some high sulfur and resulfurized steels, and 3) the limitation of hot-shortness to a definite temperature range. The role that manganese plays in steel to eliminate hot-shortness is well known, but the theory behind it is still under question. Moreover, the effect of de-oxidizers such as aluminum and silicon, and the effect of oxygen are still not clearly known. In this study, the effect of heat treatments and of additions of manganese, aluminum, silicon, and oxygen upon the distribution of sulfide inclusions in iron was investigated. Both the as-cast and the heat treated structures were studied, using microscopic and autoradiographic techniques. Part of the results were interpreted in terms of Smith's' concept of microstructure. Review of Literature Metallurgists used to consider sulfide inclusions as suspended particles. It was Wohrman' who first pointed out that sulfide inclusions are soluble in liquid iron. Many observed facts may be understood on the basis of this concept of solubility. Wohrman found that small castings contain small inclusions. and larger castings contain larger ones. Also, inclusion sizes are smaller near the chilled surface. For the same size ingot, the average inclusion size in a given heat of steel depends upon the rate of solidification. Asbestos crystallizes within rock formations undergoing intense deformation characterized by folding, faulting, shearing, and dilation. Some of these conditions have prevailed during formation of the taconite iron ore deposits in the eastern Mesabi Iron Range of Minnesota. This range includes the Peter Mitchell Taconite Mine at Babbitt, Minnesota. The mine pit is over 8 miles long, up to 1 mile wide. Fifty three samples were collected from 30 sites within areas of the pit where faulting, shearing and folding occur and where fibrous minerals might occur. Eight samples from seven collecting sites contain significant amounts of ferroactinolite amphibole that is partially to completely altered to fibrous ferroactinolite. Two samples from two other sites contain ferroactinolite degraded to ropy masses of fibers consisting mostly of ferrian sepiolite as defined by X-ray diffraction and TEM and SEM X-ray spectral analysis. Samples from five other sites contain unaltered amphiboles, however some of these samples also contain a very small number of fiber bundles composed of mixtures of grunerite, ferroactinolite, and ferrian sepiolite. It is proposed that the alteration of the amphiboles was caused by reaction with water-rich acidic fluids that moved through the mine faults and shear zones. The fibrous amphiboles and ferrian sepiolite collected at the Peter Mitchell Mine composes a tiny fraction of one percent of the total rock mass of this taconite deposit; an even a smaller amount of these mineral fragments enter the ambient air during mining and milling. These fibrous minerals thus do not present a significant health hazard to the miners nor to those non-occupationally exposed. No asbestos of any type was found in the mine pit. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. Alacer Gold Corporation is constructing the Çöpler Gold Mine in eastern Turkey. Mining commenced in the fourth quarter of 2009 and gold production started in the fourth quarter of 2010. The mine is a 15,500 t/day oxide heap leach with three-stage crushing, agglomeration, carbon adsorption and electrowinning for final metal recovery. Leach solution copper levels are expected to be relatively low during the first two years of production, but will increase in later years due to higher copper content in the mined and processed ore. Over the mine life, approximately 40 Mt of ore will be placed on the leach pad, which will contain about 35,000 t of copper. Metallurgical testing indicates copper extraction will vary by ore type and, if controls are not implemented, may lead to copper levels exceeding 1,000 mg/L in pregnant solution. High copper levels in leach solution have the deleterious effect of increasing cyanide consumption and potentially overwhelming the ability of the carbon circuit to effectively adsorb the principal economic metals, which in this case are gold and silver. Using data obtained from laboratory leach column testwork, the heap leach facility was modeled using METSIM process simulation software to estimate the build-up of copper in leach solution over the life of the mine. Laboratory testwork was also performed to evaluate process conditions for treating a portion of pregnant leach solution via sulfide addition to precipitate saleable copper as copper sulfide (Cu2S).

The materials containing copper which are refined in the United Statrs, are, for the most part, the natiye noppers of Lake Superior. There are at the present time only three works which treat native copper, the two of the Detroit and Lake Superior copper Company, and the works of C:G. Hussey & Co., in Pittsburgh. Failure of rock materials is a process of crack propagation. Crack initiation takes place when the crack tip stress intensity K reaches a critical value called fracture toughness, K1C. The rock fracture toughness is known to be affected by the surrounding environment such as temperature, confining pressure and humidity. In order to examine the effect of humidity, a series of semi-circular bend tests were performed under various water vapour pressures in a rock material that is known to be anisotropic. Water vapour promotes stress corrosion of rock and therefore the fracture toughness was found to have a decreasing trend with increasing water vapour pressure. The rate of decreasing the fracture toughness depends on the microcrack density that promotes the migration of water vapour into the rock. Also in an anisotropic rock, the fracture toughness depends on the direction of crack in relation to the anisotropy of the rock material.

OCI Wyoming mines two flat-lying trona seams that are 3- to 3.5-m- (10- to 11.5-ft-) thick, about10 m (33 ft) apart and 250-m- (820-ft-) deep at its Big Island Mine in Wyoming. Continuous miners and a yielding-pillar system have contributed to improvements in resource recovery and productivity. The use of yield pillars minimizes the stresses transmitted from the upper to the lower seam. However, yielding must not impact the good, long-term stability needed to prevent subsidence for a large portion of the mine beneath the Green River channel.

Geometallurgical modeling of the production benches is an attempt to estimate the geometallurgical variables of the different ore domains, which leads to a better understanding of the ore and its properties. Having geometallurgical variables results in a more accurate prediction of ore characteristics, an improved drilling and blasting operation, and better efficiency of the processing plant. In this research, the geometallurgical variables required for the geometallurgical modeling of the extraction benches are discussed. Then, the relations between Bond work index (BWi), as one of the most important geometallurgical variables and the primary grindability index, and rock geomechanical properties are investigated based on the previously published studies. The BWi is the main parameter for measuring the resistance to the grinding of ore minerals. It represents the energy required for processing (e.g., crushing, grinding) ore rocks in the beneficiation plant. As a real case study, BWi of a production bench in Sungun Copper Mine, located in East Azarbaijan province, Iran, was estimated. The rock’s geomechanical properties were measured using laboratory tests, including uniaxial compressive strength, Brazilian tensile strength, point load strength, and hardness. Then, BWi was estimated using the proposed formulas in the literature and the results of the rock’s geomechanical properties. The selected bench consists of three ore zones and two dyke domains. The laboratory tests revealed that the first ore zone has a slightly higher compressive strength than the other two zones, while the compressive strength of the waste rocks is larger than the ore domains. Using the proposed equations in the literature, the predicted values of the BWi for the samples in ore zones are in the range of 6.36 – 14.44 (kWh/t), and therefore this wide range must be considered when the short-term production schedule is planned. In addition, variations are observed in the samples within a specific zone and between the ore zones, demonstrating heterogeneity in the selected bench. Finally, wide-open results obtained by different equations show a necessity to perform a geometallurgical program specifically for the Sungun mine.

Although two-entry yield pillar-based gate roads supported by wooden cribs have been commonly used throughout longwalling in the Wasatch PlateadRoan Cliffs coalfield of central Utah, a three-entry yield-abutment gate road configuration was recently trialed in the Hiawatha Seam at the Genwal Resources (GRI) Crandall Canyon No. 1 Mine, near Huntington, UT. Pillar, entry, and cable bolt performance were monitored through second panel mining using a fairly extensive array of geomechanical instruments installed over a span of four crosscuts. Ground pressure and entry closure measurements confirmed that the 9.1-m-wide (30-ft) yield pillar was partially shielded from first panel longwall loads by the 36.6-m-wide (120-ft) abutment pillar, and consequently, experienced only minor yielding until the approach of the second panel face. Complete yielding of the 9. I-m-wide (30-ft) pillar occurred when the second panel was approximately 6.1 m (20 ft) inby the instrumentation site. Average cable bolt loads and differential roof sag remained low through second panel mining and tailgate entry ground conditions were excellent; however, very high ground pressures in the abutment and yield pillars, and second panel rib strongly suggest a high potential for coal bumps utilizing this gate road configuration at mining cover depths in excess of 396 to 457 m (1300 to 1500 ft). This conclusion is supported by the suspected occurrence of small coal bumps along the abutment pillar ribs, observed indirectly as fresh debris in the middle entry just behind the second face. This paper presents a case history developed from the geotechnical measurements and on-site observations of this unique application of a yield-abutment gate road configuration and cable support system in the Hiawatha Seam.

In 1996, 92.5% or 233 Mt (257.4 million st) of coal produced in Wyoming came from the Wyodak coal zone in the eastern Powder River Coal Field. While the mined portions of the zone consist of one to three beds of coal with an aggregate thickness between 15 and 33.5 m (50 and 110 ft), the thickest expression is 61 m (200 ft). The delivered coal from this zone averages 0.33% sulfur, 5.12% ash, and 19.98 MJ/kg (8,590 Btu/lb). This coal zone occurs at or near the top of the Paleocene Fort Union Formation, which is overlain by the Eocene Wasatch Formation. There is also production from two coal beds in the lower portion of the Wasatch at the southern end of the basin. Production of coalbed methane derived from the Wyodak coal zone is currently an estimated 10.2 billion cu ft a year. This production is occurring just west and downdip from the coal mines and is increasing each year.

Explosives identification tagging refers to the addition to explosives, during manufacture, of coded microparticles that can survive detonation, be recovered and decoded, and allow the explosives to be identified and traced to the last legal possessor as a result of distribution records kept of the coded tagged explosives. This study seeks to prepare the way for National implementation of identification tagging of all dynamites and cap-sensitive slurries (also known as water gels) by resolving technical issues and by developing a plan for pilot testing of the program. It is presented in two volumes: Volume I, National Implementation Model, and Volume II, Pilot Test Plan.

"INTRODUCTION For many years it has been known that low-grade manganese deposits occur in the bluffs along the Missouri River Valley. Frequent attempts have been made to develop the ore and to produce a marketalble commodity but they have had little success. Under pressure of the war emergency and the shortage of manganese, the attention of the Federal Bureau of Mines was directedtoward the deposits.Manganese-bearing shale occurs from a point near Pierre, S. Dak., down the river to the Rosebud bridge near the Nebraska line (1).5/ The Bureau of,confined its work to the more accessible central portion of the deposits near Chamberlain, S. Dak. The ore occurs principally as concretionary nodules in the form of iron and manganese carbonates (manganosiarite and perhaps some manganocalcite; rhodochrosite has not been identified). At the surface the carbonate is often broken down so that the oxide of manganese gives the nodules a black The matrix or host rock is generally known as Pierre shale, composed of ""interbedded layers of bentonite, an altered volcanic ash, and dissemi¬nated bentonite particles,"" (2) and montmorillonite-beidellite clay minerals (3). The shale weathers to the very sticky gumbo characteristic of South Dakota and well-known to hunters and travelers in the area.The area selected for the experimental mining and pilot-plant work discussed in this report lies about 8 miles westerly from Chamberlain and is a few hundred feet north of U. S. Highway,16, on land owned or controlled,by M. Q. Sharpe of Kennebec, S. Dak., and the General Manganese Corp."

"The toxicity reduction of emissions from two diesel engines by the emulsification of water into fuel oil was investigated to determine the applicability of such systems to underground mining machinery. . The engines studied were: 1) the Deut; F6L7J4, four-stroke, air-cooled, 6-cylinder, V-configuration, indirect-injection (IDl) engine, and 2) the Detroit Deisel Allison Division 8V7JN, two-stroke, water-cooled, 8-cylinder, V-configuration, direct-injection (Dl) engine.The application of emulsified fuel treatment to the two-stroke engine did not prove to be practicable. In the case of the Deutz engine, however, substantial benefit resulted. For a modest J5 per cent water content in the fuel and an injection timing of24° BTDC, approximate reductions of40 per cent in the concentrations of both particulate matter and nitric oxide (NO) were produced. These reductions were accompanied by insignificant changes in other toxic constituents. The net result was an approximate 30 per cent reduction in the over-all exhaust toxicity for typical LHD operation as assessed by the Health Effects Index criterion. This toxicity reduction represents a significant advance from the points of view of an improved underground environment and/or reduced ventilation costs."

A users friendly PC Computer Program has been developed to implement a systematic design of the powered support. The required input data are: (1) thickness, RQD, and compressive strength of the immediate roof; (2) mining height; and (3) type, thickness, and tensile strength of the main roof. Several important parameters for support selection under a given geological condition are generated through the implementation of the program, including type of support most favorable for the geologic condition, minimum inclination angle of the legs with respect to the horizontal axis, suitable setting load ratio of the front to rear leg for the 4-leg supports, optimum setting load, and support capacity.

The Kiruna Mine in Sweden currently has three ventilation systems. The first two (a new and old system) serve the production areas. The third system is used for the facilities on the former main haulage level 775. That area includes offices and workshops for load haul dumpers (LHD) and drill rigs. The third ventilation system also covers the crushing and haulage on level 1045. At the present time, the total airflow for the mine is 1,600 m3/sec(3.4 million cfm). The current system serves the levels above the 775 level. The new one is for the levels between 775 and 1,085 m (2,540 and 3,560 ft), which are needed for the new ore body. When all of the production is below level 775, the old ventilation system will be closed down.

Casting, cooling and crushing/sieving of ferroalloys has followed a well-established pattern in the whole ferroalloys industry for many years. Usually liquid metal or alloys are cast into flat open moulds of various shapes and forms, and after solidification the product is removed from such mould to further cool down to a temperature where subsequent handling steps are feasible. Common to all mechanical product fractioning is the generation of dust and fine size material with lower product value. For almost 10 years, Bécancour Silicon has investigated alternative roads to improve technology and/or reduce or solve problems related to those disadvantages. Since 1995 Bécancour Silicon operates a special silicon granulation plant targeted to product for the chemical treatment/conversion of silicon for silicones production. Prior to the development of the granulation process, various systems had been evaluated, among others the vibrating casting bed, now in operation elsewhere but judged inappropriate because of the tapping volumes to be handled at Bécancour Silicon and other disadvantages. After evaluation of all aspects of heat transfer, radiation, and conductivity in relation to transfer media and within the product, a novel system was designed and built.

Silver ore was discovered at Aspen in 1879, but the district did not reach full production until 1888 after lawsuits were settled and railroads furnished less expensive transportation to the outside world. The boom years were 1888-92; production declined thereafter. From the middle 1920's until 1950, the Midnight mine in the Richmond Hill district furnished most of the output in the Aspen quadrangle. Since 1950, little mining has been done at Aspen. The metals produced were silver, lead and zinc. Native silver dissolved from the sulfide ores was redeposited by waters circulating as deep as 300 m below the land surface, resulting in great secondary enrichment of many of the deposits. Over 100 million ounces of silver were produced in the Aspen quadrangle. Low-grade lead-zinc deposits remain between the old workings locally, and data available suggest that primary ore below levels mined is also of low grade. The ore occurs in the Mississippian Leadville Limestone and the lower part of the Pennsylvanian Belden Formation in sites that were made favorable for deposition by a number of stratigraphic and structural factors.
