The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) identified hearing loss as the most common job-related disease in the United States in its 1996 National Occupational Research Agenda. Previous studies by NIOSH have shown that operators of surface drill rigs without cabs are commonly exposed to A-weighted sound levels exceeding 90 dB. During hammer-drilling, A-weighted sound levels exceeding 100 dB were recorded at the operator station. NIOSH collaborated with a local drilling company to design and install a partial cab between the operator and the drill steel in an effort to reduce the sound level at the operator station. Sound level measurements in the field show the partial cab reduces the A-weighted sound level by 5 to 9 dB at the operator’s left ear and 2 to 5 dB at the operator’s right ear while hammer-drilling. This paper briefly discusses the preliminary design of a cab and the testing of materials for construction of the prototype. An explanation of the ideas behind the prototype design and fabrication are covered. Finally, the field test method and results are discussed in detail.1

THE classical papers on contact metasomatic deposits by Lindgren on the Clifton-Morenci district,' by Barrell on Marysville, Mont.,' and by Gold-schmitt on the Oslo district, Norway,' laid the foundation for understanding of the importance of separating the metamorphic process from the subsequent metasomatic stage. Knopf' made a big step forward by recognizing that sulfide ore minerals are invariably younger than silicates and by further stressing the importance of structural control" in ore finding. Some years later Harrison Schmitt" fought the idea that contact metasomatic deposits are erratic, irregular, bunchy, economically marginal, and of small size, concluding that these descriptions have little factual basis. He emphasized the importance of detail mapping and careful geological study as fundamental requirements for a better understanding of these deposits. This article presents a comparative description of the structural features at the Magistral, Antamina, Morococha, Vilca, Ferrobamba, Katanga (Quibio), Tintaya, and Huarca contact deposits (Fig. 1). Further, it will describe how these structural features controlled the emplacement of the intrusives, their shape, distribution of metamorphic and metasomatic halos, and sulfide deposition in post-skarn structural channelways. Finally, the modifications introduced by a superimposed hydrothermal stage recognized at some localities will be discussed. Primary exploration and careful sampling of recognized structural targets were instrumental in outlining the copper ore potential at the Antamina and Tintaya districts, thus proving the benefits and reward of careful geological examinations in this type of deposit. The Magistral District: This district lies in the Province of Pallasca, Department of Ancash, in northern Peru, at 8o 16' S and 77" 47' W. High to medium grade copper orebodies in garnetite, bordering a quartz monzonite stock, are exposed at the bottom of a glaciated valley in the western slope of the Andes at 4250 m (14,000 ft)* elevation.

Helical piles and ground anchors were used to meet critical design and constructability requirements for an urban forest Canopy Walk at the Atlanta Botanical Garden, Atlanta, GA. The 12-foot wide pedestrian walkway path was to be nestled among the treetops of a forest, extending to 600 ft. in length, and soaring 40 ft. high above the forest floor. Of particular concern during construction was that the foundation system for the temporary steel shoring system had to be non-invasive to the subsoil, could not damage the forest floor, trees, root systems, or foliage, and upon completion of the concrete walkway pour, could be removed, again without disturbing the subsoil. Accubrace, Inc. designed and installed all the helical foundation types, as well as provided steel braces, typically used in Tilt-Up building construction, for the walkway project. The braces, some extending to 43 ft. in length, were used to provide lateral support against wind loads for the walkway form. In addition, the braces acted as secondary support for lateral loads during the placement of wet concrete along the 600 ft. length of the walkway. Helical foundation products installed included vertical compression piles, ground anchors for tension rods, and ground anchors for the braces. The installation of the piles and anchors was particularly challenging since the forest floor elevation varied as much as 50 ft. due to the presence of a ravine. Information is provided on the subsoil conditions, required loads, design, installation, and acceptance criteria for each helical product type installed for the project. The results of vertical and lateral load tests on the helical piles in the pre-construction phase, conducted in conformance to project specifications are presented. Photographs to illustrate the nature and complexity of the project are included. The concrete pour for the walkway was successfully completed on December 12, 2009, and the walkway was opened for visitors in May, 2010.

Barre granite?s samples have been tested for fracture toughness under mode I along two different directions with respect to microstructural fabrics were investigated. 3D objects counter algorithm technique is applied on micro CT images to identify physical properties such as crack induced porosity, crack density, generated total surface area and contribution of individual mineral grains within the damaged zone.The result obtained justifies very well the fracture toughness anisotropy in Barre granite, and explains the difference in the structure of the damage zone evolving as a result of test crack interacting with pre-existing microstructural fabrics. The present study has potential application in the fields of rock mass stability, oil reservoir stimulation, rock fragmentation and damage in blasting and emplacement of dykes.

In 1961, West Australian Petroleum's Eneabba No. 1 bore encountered 22 seams of coal totalling 40 ft in thickness between the depths of 6373 ft and 6441 ft. On analysis, this coal had a similar calorific value (8000-HOOO B.T.U./lb, assuming 20 per cent water) to the coal from the Collie Coalfield, Western Australia's only known area of commercially exploitable coal. Being buried to depths in excess of 6000 ft, the coal at Eneabba had developed weakly-coking properties, and thus, although much younger than the Permian coals of Collie, gave promise of being a major potential source of power for Western Australia.West Australian Petroleum undertook a programme of stratigraphic drilling and shallow test drilling to determine whether this coalhorizon persisted into the outcrop of the Lower Jurassic sediments in the Hill River district, 140 miles NNW. of Perth, and, if it was present, if the quality and quantity of the coal would warrant development of the deposits by open cutting. The coal horizon was identified in the near surface, but the poor quality of the coal and the complexity of the structure made development (in the area examined) uneconomic at the time.A strong seismic reflection in the Eneabba area occurs at the same depth as the Jurassic coals. This event originates within the upper beds of the Lower Jurassic and it is probable that the velocity contrast between the higher velocity siltstones and the very low velocity coals enhances this very strong, distinctive seismic reflection.This event can be followed on continuous seismic data over a large area of the northern Perth Basin, from 13 miles SE. of Dongara to 20 miles SW. of Coorow. It can be followed from a depth of 4000 ftnear Dongara to over 17,000 ft to the SE., so development of thisvast potential source of power will depend on the economics ofprocesses being developed for the production of power from theburning of coal seams in situ.INTRODUCTIONThe discovery of 22 seams of economically useable coaltotalling 40 ft in thickness in the Lower J urassic sedimentsof the Eneabba No. 1 bore (Fig. 1) led to the search forthese seams at economically workable depths. The second will be a technical paper on the development of a welded coupling compatible with urethane lined pipework. We trust that by discussing our recent work we can leave two lasting impressions on you: the versatility and useful role of slurry transportation, and the leading role taken by New Zealand in this technology This paper discusses three recent projects the New Zealand Steel Ironsand Transfer Line the Coarse Coal Ship Loading Technology the Nerang River Sand By-pass System. These have followed on from the other slurry projects with which McConnell Dowell has been associated such as the ironsand export trade at Waipipi and Taharoa. The New Zealand Contractors Federation awarded the Construction Award for 1986 to McConnell Dowell for the Ironsand Slurry Pipeline.

The Fe(II) regeneration process is an important aspect of Alternate Anode Reaction Technology (AART) for copper electrowinning (EW). In AART, Fe(II) is oxidized to Fe(III) at the anode during EW, and it must be regenerated to maintain recyclable electrolytes. Regeneration is achieved via Fe(III) reduction by SO2(aq), and the reaction is catalyzed by activated carbon particles. To better understand this process, a kinetic model was developed and experimentally validated for the Fe(II) regeneration in the current work. The investigation focused on the primary reaction mechanism and the reaction rate dependence on four variables: carbon particle size, flow rate, initial Fe(III) concentration and initial SO2 concentration. The Fe(II) regeneration reaction is mass-transfer controlled in the presence of activated carbon. Carbon particle size and initial Fe(III) are the most influential factors under the conditions tested. Initial SO2 concentration is insignificant to the reaction rate.

Rroundtable 2009, a Knight Piésold and Co.-hosted roundtable discussion on mine closure and cover design was held at the Red Lion Inn and Casino in Elko, NV on Feb. 12, 2009. Knight Piésold?s Bryan Ulrich and Steve Boyce, as well as Knight Piésold representatives Cynthia Parnow and Corey Conrad from Denver, CO, and Rick Frechette from the Tucson, AZ office were on hand to help facilitate the discussion. The meeting played host to approximately three-dozen attendees from four states. Attendees included personnel from seven mining properties and attendees from corporate offices. The majority of attendees were people directly involved with environmental work on a day-to-day basis. Other attendees were project managers whose jobs involve some level of environmental focus. The purpose of Roundtable 2009 was to exchange ideas and information pertaining to mine closure and cover design associated with almost any aspect of a mining operation. This type of forum provides a less inhibited format for discussion, when compared with traditional conferences and symposia. In the roundtable format, lively discussions are encouraged. This discussion was the fourth in the series of Elko Roundtable events. Previous roundtables pertained to heap leach pad design, construction and operation; design, construction and operation of tailings storage facilities and site-wide water considerations. "Measurements obtained during load testing of two steel H-piles driven at a site in Northeastern Mississippi are discussed. The general site conditions, equipment used, testing procedures and results of the pile load tests are presented. Both piles were tested in compression and one of the piles was subsequently tested in tension. The piles were instrumented with strain gauges and extensometers to measure the mobilized soil resistance and pile movement. Three different “zero strain” conditions were used to determine the mobilized soil resistance and residual loads due to driving or a load cycle. It was concluded that the effect of residual loads on driven piles could be significant. Driving residual loads influenced the magnitude and distribution of the load transfer curves more than those due to a load cycle. Results of the tension test were impacted by the residual loads from the previous compression test performed on the same pile.INTRODUCTIONSeveral factors affect the performance of a deep foundation system including the subsoil conditions, loading settings, pile type and installation method. Residual stresses develop in piles particularly due to pile driving, but they are typically not accounted for in the analysis (Fellenius 2002). Siegel and McGillivray (2009) presented an assessment of residual loads measured during load testing of instrumented auger-cast-in-place (ACIP) piles. The magnitude and distribution of residual stresses along the pile shaft and toe depend on the pile installation method, previous load cycles and time effects. Poulos (1987) reported that residual load due to driving at the pile toe is independent of pile driving equipment and may significantly affect the results of a pile load test. Hunter and Davisson (1969) reported results of pile load tests performed in compression on fully instrumented piles driven in cohesionless soils along with a discussion of the effects of residual loads. Tension loads of about 445 kN (100 kips) were measured at the pile toe after driving. Unloading residual compression load at the toe was detected as “apparent” tension since the instrumentation was zeroed prior to the test. The researchers suggested a graphical approach to obtain the “corrected” load distribution curves considering that residual load will dissipate following the tension test. Holloway et al. (1975) conducted a study on the effect of residual stresses due to pile driving and developed a computer software that accounts for residual loads. Briaud and Tucker (1984) suggested a method to account for residual loads based on the results of 33 pile load tests performed in mostly cohesionless soils."

"In July of 2016 and June 2017, major tap-hole repairs were carried out during the annual shutdown of two 63 MVA submerged arc furnaces producing ferrochromium in South Africa. The hot excavations of the tap-holes allowed for a study of the wear profiles. Subsequent thermodynamic calculations allowed for the quantification of the potential for chemical reaction between refractory and slag or alloy contributing to wear in the tap-hole area. Results from both wear profiling and thermodynamic calculations are reported here. IntroductionFerrochrome (FeCr) is an essential alloy in the production of stainless steel (Gasik, 2013). In 2017, 11.7 Mt of FeCr was produced (Pariser et al., 2018.). The main producers were China (39%), South Africa (29%), Kazakstan (12%), and India (8%).A number of grades of FeCr are available to producers of stainless steel, including high-carbon ferrochrome (HCFeCr) (Gasik, 2013). HCFeCr typically contains 60–70% Cr and 4–6% C (Basson and Daavittila, 2013). When the chromium content is lower (50–55% Cr) and the carbon content higher (6–8% C), it is referred to as charge chrome. Charge chrome is typically produced in South Africa due to the grades of ore available.FeCr is produced in submerged arc furnaces (SAFs) and in open arc furnaces (Mc Dougall, 2013) by carbothermic reduction of oxide raw materials. In a SAF the electrode tips are submerged in a porous charge mix. In FeCr production, the electrical energy is mainly liberated by resistive heating of the wet coke bed (Barker et al., 2007; Steenkamp et al., 2017). Thermally conductive lining design philosophies are typically applied in SAFs producing FeCr (Steenkamp, Denton, and Hayman, 2017; Coetzee, Duncanson, and Sylven, 2010; Coetzee et al., 2010).In July of 2016 and June of 2017, major tap-hole repairs were carried out during the annual shutdown of two 63 MVA SAFs producing FeCr in South Africa. The hot excavations of the tap-holes allowed for a study of the wear profiles. Both SAFs were operated on the same site, by two different operating crews, using the same raw materials. The major difference between them was that the SAF excavated in 2016 was an open SAF (referred to as Furnace A) and the one excavated in 2017 was a closed SAF (referred to as Furnace B). In an open SAF, a gap exists between the top of the steel shell and the roof, with the top of the burden being open to the atmosphere and the CO-rich off-gas being combusted as it escapes. In a closed SAF, the roof is attached to the steel shell and the CO-rich off-gas is collected from an offtake on the roof for further treatment and used in downstream processes.The paper presented here reports the macro-scale observations on refractory wear for the two SAFs, and studies the potential for chemical wear of refractory by slag and alloy as a potential contributing factor to the tap-hole wear observed."

"CONTROL STRATEGYThe Lake Dufault Division of Falconbridge Copper Limited has been concentrating a complex copper zinc ore since late 1964. An ARL X-ray on stream analyzer was installed in 1966 for process control. A Digital Equip-ment Corporation PDP8 was added in 1968 for more complete control. To improve the system the computer was exchanged for a Moded PDP-81 in 1971.The new computer is time sharing with 8K core memory and 32K disc storage. A new interface was installed to accommodate 14 X-ray streams and additional analog signals for process control. The system gave us additional capacity and flexibility to make changes in operating programs and control strategy while on line. As the computer is used for process control a modified focal language was chosen as the operating language for ease of operation. This language is more suitable for process control than for statistical work.The main components of the control system are(a) Computer(b) Interface(c) Production Control X-ray Quantometer(d) Teletype terminals(e)Reagent feeders(f) Sample SystemThe operation of the system consists in the computer selecting the various streams to be analyzed by a PCXQ Quantometer. When the flowing sample is presented to the X-ray the intensities of the various elements are read by the computer from analog to digital converter, the assays are then computed. From the tonnage and assays the computer is programmed to determine the amount of reagent added to various parts of the circuit. The computer drives the feeders via the interface for the required amount of reagent. After following a certain sequence the computer prints out the performance and control data on an ASR35 Teletype. The data is printed out approximately every seven minutes. Any des¬ired changes in the program or strategy can be made during operation via an ASR33 Teletype connected to the computer."

"ABSTRACTTheoretical approach to estimate the ultimate pile capacity gives a rough idea at the initial stage of design that later on strengthen by the execution of static pile load test at site. The static pile load test is the only best option for the estimation of ultimate capacity of various types of piles. There are various methods based on strength, serviceability, net deflection for end bearing, shaft adhesion, graphical and extrapolation approaches for the interpretation of pile load test data to calculate the ultimate capacity. In this paper an attempt is made to evaluate the best-fit method for the estimation of ultimate capacity of single helix screw pile. The pile load tests on model scale were performed on screw piles of different helix diameter. The purpose of adopting model scale of testing was to achieve a state at which settlement increases without further increase in vertical load. The ground was compacted with dry sand at denser state. It was observed from the test results that extrapolation methods such as Chin- Kondner and Decourt predict the load settlement curve of screw piles very well, however ultimate pile capacity was on higher side which may not be suitable for the strength of helix plate. Decourt approach to plot the pile load data showed clear indication of the deformation of helix due to strong subsurface condition. A modified approach in Decourt method is proposed for estimating the ultimate capacity of screw pile having deformed helix whereas reduction factor is suggested for Chin-Kondner method for the estimation of ultimate capacity of intact screw pile.INTRODUCTIONDeep foundations are used to avoid the soft ground at shallow depth that is not suitable for carrying the structural load. Different types of piles have been used to transfer the load to deeper stratum. The screw pile is one of the new piling method and its use is considerably increasing. It consists of a cylindrical steel shaft with one or more helices at various length of the shaft. The diameter of helices (Dw) is usually 2 – 2.5 times the shaft diameter (Ds). The pile is installed to the required depth through torque and pressure. The advantage of screw pile over other piling system is its quick installation mechanism, high end-bearing and uplift resistance, noise reduction and minimum use of man power."

Continuous operating performance and high profit is one of the major concerns in the mining industry. Information systems are expected to reinforce and enable conformance to these requirements. The companion efforts of business management and production information systems press for tighter integration to avoid over-laps, multiple instances of similar data, and expensive maintenance of databases. Implementation of advanced intelligent systems throughout a mine operation can reduce costs, optimize investment and create a shorter payback via conversion of the data accumulated by field and process devices into information, and subsequently, into decisions. However, in order to harness the potential power inherent in these intelligent devices, adequate and flexible modular knowledge-based solutions are required. Fortunately, there has been at least one such practical response to this challenge, namely the ABB IndustrialIT portfolio. With these tools in place, production efficiency is reached via integration of process, production, and quality information. Moreover, they permit immediate detection and remedial action to changes to process and boundary condition variables. Finally, using advanced optimization techniques supported by dedicated mathematical models, they allow for economic process optimization (process set points and coordination thereof, energy management, production planning, energy supply contract optimization, etc) of the plant as a whole.

There is an alternative theory of the high grade orebodies of the Middleback Group, based on the primary nature of the high grade ores in an area of carbonate deposition, with lesser amounts of siliceous and aluminous sediments. The environment is thought to have been unstable, possibly volcanic, and to have been a subsiding basin, substantially isolated from the open sea.Jaspilites, iron bearing talc rocks and iron bearing carbonate rocks were derived from the primary sediments by metasomatic alteration after metamorphism.The metasomatic agents were carbon dioxide and water vapour which were mobilized from the primary dolomite and reacted with a metamorphically produced group of iron bearing and iron free amphiboles, forming talc and progressively releasing silica and iron oxides from the iron amphiboles.The talc rocks in turn released silica which reconstituted jaspilites into their present 200 ft thick crust or zone.The theory accounts for the present disposition of a jaspilite zone over a talc zone which in turn overlies a carbonate zone, and accounts for the down dip changes found in bores which penetrate these zones.INTRODUCTIONIron Duke (Fig. 1) lies some 34 miles south west of WhyalIa in South Australia, and is the most southerly ore body in the Middleback Ranges.The Middleback Ranges are divided into a northern range and a southern range meridionally disposed and separated by an erosion gap called Kimba Gap.The South Middleback Range contains four orebodies;Iron Duke at the southern extremity, Iron Duchess north of Iron Duke and on the same ridge, Iron Knight also on the same ridge, which has been breached by erosion between theDuchess and Knight orebodies, and north east of Iron Knight, the Iron Chieftain.Cook's Range is the eastern range of the South Middleback Range and no large orebodies are known to occur there.

This paper presents the processes of investigation, analysis, design, construction and monitoring of soil nail stabilisation work to facilitate a 14.5 m deep excavation at an uncontrolled fill ground. An extensive instrumentation programme had been implemented to monitor the performance of the stabilisation solution, to provide validation for the designed nail resistance and groundwater variation. From the monitoring results, it was proved that the soil nail stabilisation technique is effective for loose saturated fill provided that substantial care is taken during implementation. Construction difficulties, solutions to overcome the problems and lessons learned will be discussed in the paper.

"Abstract Contaminated land remediation using soil mix technology (SMT) is a relatively recent development which has been shown to be a cost effective and versatile system with numerous environmental advantages over other remediation techniques. The added complexities and variability associated with contaminated sites has escalated the need for field trials, field monitoring and specific QC measures to be undertaken for this setting and was the rationale behind project SMiRT (Soil Mix Remediation Technology). The main aim of project SMiRT was field validation, testing and assessment to provide stakeholder confidence in SMT and increase its uptake for land remediation in the UK. The field trials involved the treatment of 800 m3 of soil, through applying six different remediation techniques with four different SMT systems and introducing over thirty binders and binder compositions with a range of installation methodologies. Various issues were faced during the installation process and which were addressed on site. This paper presents some aspects of early age field observations, field monitoring, in-situ testing, coring and laboratory testing of cored samples and highlights some lessons learnt, providing valuable information on the issues that need to be addressed for this application of SMT.IntroductionAlthough soil mix technology (SMT) was developed in the 1960s in Japan and Sweden for geotechnical applications, its potential in geo-environmental applications became evident more recently the 1980s in the US and in the 1990s in Europe, having since increased to provide a range of remediation systems (Al-Tabbaa and Evans, 2003; Al-Tabbaa et al., 2011). The most common applications to date have been (a) the construction of low permeability containment walls or cut-off walls to contain a contaminated site; (b) stabilisation/solidification (S/S) treatment, with cementitious binders, for physical and chemical encapsulation of contaminants in soils and (c) the installation of permeable reactive barriers (RPBs), which are permeable walls that intercept the groundwater flow and remove contaminants from it, by mixing special additives with the native soil. Contaminated land remediation using SMT is a cost effective and versatile approach with numerous technical and environmental advantages over other remediation techniques. These advantages include the use of simple and well established techniques and equipment, speedy implementation, applicability to sites of any size and to multiple contaminants, elimination of off-site disposal, low risk and low emissions. There is a lack of competing alternative technologies that offer the same level of versatility and economic, environmental and social benefits, under current environmental legislation constraints. In addition, most currently available contaminated land remediation techniques are only partially effective, and are relatively contaminant-specific. This makes SMT a promising and timely contender to lead the market place in offering a cost-effective, efficient and low risk solution to contaminated soil and groundwater remediation and has resulted in a range of recent innovations."

With the steady increase of molybdenum demand worldwide and the favorable molybdenum market, many technological innovations on both process and equipment have been developed and applied in many modern molybdenum plants around the world. This paper introduces the most commonly used molybdenum flotation flowsheet, together with the introduction of the flotation chemistry. Many different types of flotation cells are used in modern moly plants, and each type of flotation cell has its own unique advantages suited for particular ore and process conditions.
