Industry 4.0 offers new possibilities to combine increased productivity with stimulating workplaces in a good work environment. Used correctly, digitalization can create attractive jobs in safe control room environments, which provide space for the employee’s full expertise and creativity. This is true also for the mining industry. But, to succeed, it is important to analyze the development from a worker’s perspective. What will happen to their work? What skills will be needed in the mine of tomorrow? We must also consider the risks, such as privacy issues, increased stress, and work-life boundaries. These questions must be understood if we are to create workplaces that can attract a young and diverse workforce to tomorrow’s mining industry. In this article, we try to illustrate what the new technology can mean for the individual miners. We formulate the notion of Mining 4.0 (Industry 4.0 in the mining industry), where we try to create an image of how the future might look from a miner’s perspective and how mining companies may navigate their way to a future that works for all miners. To illustrate the range of possible outcomes, we formulate two scenarios: one utopian and one dystopic. At the end of our article, we bring forward six recommendations that can be considered a beginning of a road map for the human side of Mining 4.0.

The development of information concerning mesothelioma in South Africa started with the 1959 finding of Dr. J. Christopher Wagner of cases of mesothelioma in persons living in the vicinity or working in crocidolite mines in Cape Province. After more than 40 years, the data from South Africa now provide important insights into the differences in mesothelioma risk associated with different asbestos fiber-types. Three case series reports and one analytical report were reviewed in this session. In total, information on 504 proven cases was presented. There were 28% of cases arising from occupational exposure in mining, 35% from non-mining occupations, 23% from environmental exposures; 14% where no exposure was established and 9% where the exposure was unknown. Among the 129 cases for which occupational exposure and asbestos fiber-type were established, 115 cases were associated with occupational exposure to Cape crocidolite; 1 case associated with occupational exposure to Transvaal crocidolite and 9 cases with occupational exposure to amosite (grunerite asbestos) and 4 cases with occupational exposure to mixed fiber-types. There were no cases associated with chrysotile asbestos. There were 33 cases of environmental mesothelioma linked to Cape crocidolite exposure and 2 to exposure to amosite and crocidolite but none to Transvaal amosite alone or to chrysotile. The evidence shows that amosite is capable of causing mesothelioma but that the major risk in South Africa is associated with Cape crocidolite.

Pregrouting is an extremely important part of many rock tunneling projects. However, poor and unsatisfactory performances have been frequently recorded often with very severe consequences, technically and financially. This paper, based on personal knowledge of several relevant case histories, provides recommendations with respect to specification drafting, drilling, water pressure testing, and grouting methodologies, and cementitious grout mix design principles. Even given that the logistical challenges facing tunnel pregrouting from underground will prevent all the sophistication and innovations of contemporary dam foundation grouting being practically implemented, there is still opportunity and need to change “traditional” approaches.

With unprecedented worldwide growth and increasing global demand for energy expected to swell by 60 per-cent in the next two decades, mining matters as much now, if not more, than it ever has. This was the consensus at the 110th Annual National Western Mining Conference presented by the Colorado Mining Association, Feb. 12-14 at the Westin Hotel in Denver, CO. The role of coal ? America?s most abundant energy source ? the future of uranium and its possible resurgence in the energy marketplace, the skyrocketing value of gold as well as the issues of health, safety, climate change, legislation and government?s role in mining were all discussed during the three-day conference that operated under the banner of ?Mining Matters.? Barbara Filas, chairperson of the 110th National Western Mining Conference, president of Knight Piesold Co. and former SME president, welcomed the record crowd with an inspiring speech in which she pointed out that although ?most normal folks don?t know what role mining plays in their everyday life, mining does matter. ?Our industry,? she said, ?matters to Colorado. It matters to Colorado because it is a $3-billion industry. It matters to the 13,000 people who are employed directly or indirectly by the industry and it matters to schools that receive more than half of the royalties that are generated by mining.? During discussions of mining?s place in Colorado, the western United States and the world, special attention was paid to coal, uranium and the future of energy. ?It is time to rethink our perceptions about coal,? said Mark A. Smith, president and chief executive officer of Chevron Mining Inc. He spoke during the opening reception in a presentation titled, ?Coal to Liquids: Bridging America?s Energy Gap.? Although coal is America?s most abundant, and cheapest energy source, it is also one of the most scrutinized because of the pollution it causes and recent, and heavily publicized, tragedies that have claimed the lives of some who mine it.

Characterization of feed material with respect to expected concentrate grade and recovery is fundamental to the design of improved separation efficiencies and to achieve sustainable development in the utilization of our mineral resources. An important reference point for this characterization is the liberation-limited grade/recovery curve which represents the perfect separation, the best separation which can be achieved for a given feed material limited only by the extent of liberation. Now, liberation-limited grade/recovery curves can be determined based on 3D mineral liberation analysis of feed material. Thus, actual separation efficiencies can be compared to what might be expected for a perfect separation limited only by the extent of liberation. It is shown that 3D mineral liberation analysis based on X-ray micro CT (XMCT) is preferred to 2D section analysis which overestimates the extent of liberation. By way of example, procedures and experimental results are presented and discussed for feed material in the case of phosphate rock flotation.

An experimental 1.75 meter Shaft Boring Machine was designed and manufactured by The Robbins Company. The drill was used by contractor Drillcon Raise AB to drill test shafts at an SKB underground test facility. SKB is the Swedish authority responsible for safe management of nuclear waste materials. This “SBM1.8” Shaft Boring Machine was used to drill shallow test shafts ingranitic rock at SKB’s Aspo underground laboratory. The drill used a unique vacuum mucking system. The bored shafts were held to very strict tolerances for bore diameter, straightness, and verticality. This drill was launched and operated from a mobile launcher. Headroom and working space were limited. The SBM1.8 drill produced acceptable test holes. SKB will carry out several studies to determine the suitability of this geology, and of this technique, for safe nuclear disposal. In addition to future use at SKB, many applications are foreseen, particularly in the civil construction industry.

US coal consumption reached new heights in 1985, but production was constrained by excess consumer inventories. Domestic consumption of coal reached a record 742 Mt (818 million st) during the year. This is a 3.4% gain over the previous consumption high 718 Mt (791 million st) in 1984. An additional 84 Mt (92.7 million st) of US coal were shipped abroad in 1985, up 13.7% from exports a year earlier. Coal production in 1985 totaled 804 Mt (886 million st), 1.1% below the record 813 Mt (896 million st) produced in 1984. The slight decline in coal output is attributed primarily to a 13% drawdown of large consumer stockpiles built up in 1984 in anticipation of a miners strike that never occurred. Coal demand, and hence production, were also restrained by slower economic growth in 1985 and additional gains in nuclear generation of electricity. Domestic market requirements for coal in 1985 were mixed. Electric utility consumption rose 4.4%; coke plants consumed 6.7% less coal; coal requirements in the other industrial sector expanded by 2.1% and consumption in the residential and commercial sector fell 14.8%. The 2.2% increase in electric power generation in 1985 resulted in a 4.4% rise in utility coal consumption, totaling 630 Mt (694 million st) for the year. Twenty-nine of 45 states where coal-fired electric power plants were operating shared in the 26.7 Mt (29.5 million st) increase in 1985. Coal receipts at utilities fell by 16 Mt (18 million st) as these facilities worked off 21 Mt (23.4 million st) from stockpiles during the year. Electricity generation at coal-fired power plants similarly climbed 4.4% to 1.4 trillion kWh in 1985. This gave coal a 56.8% share of electricity generated from all energy sources compared with 55.5% in 1984. The average price of coal delivered to these facilities remained essentially unchanged during the year. It declined on 1.5% from $38.26/t ($34.71 per st) during the fourth quarter of 1984 to $37.70/t ($34.20 per st) in the fourth quarter of 1985. Coal consumption at coke plants continue to reflect a depressed steel industry. After rebounding 18.9% in 1984 for the first time in five years, coal consumption at coke plants again declined 6.7% to 37 Mt (41.1 million st) in 1985. Coke consumption 26.5 Mt (29.3 million st) exceeded production, 26 Mt (28.7 million st), in 1985. This resulted in a 1-Mt (1.2-million st) decline in coke stocks at producer and distributor levels during the year. The average price of coal delivered to coke plants decreased 7.6% from $64.30/t ($58.34 per st) during the final quarter of 1984 to $59.42/t (53.91 per st) in the last quarter of 1985. Coal consumption in other industries, including all manufacturing and industrial consumers except coke plants, totaled 68.3 Mt (75.3 million st) in 1985. This was the highest level attained in more than a decade. But the lower percentage rise last year (2.1% compared to 11.8% in 1984) reflected slower growth in the nation's economy in 1985. The average price of coal delivered to industrial firms declined 4.5% from $42.32/t ($38.39 per st) in the fourth quarter of 1984 to $40.39/t ($36.65 per st) in the last quarter of 1985. Coal-producing states in Appalachia mined 9.8 Mt (10.8 million st) tons less in 1985 than in 1984 for a 2.4% loss. The largest contributors to the region's production decrease to 393 Mt (433 million st) were Pennsylvania, down 14.7% to 60 Mt (66 million st); Ohio, down 8.3% to 32.6 Mt (36 million st); and West Virginia, down 2.9% to 115 Mt (127 million st). Conversely, eastern Kentucky production was up 4.8% to 111 Mt (122.8 million st) in 1985, while production in Tennessee climbed 9.7% to 40 Mt (44 million st). No coal was mined in Georgia last year. Coal production in the interior region in 1985 declined 3.9% to 173 Mt (190.4 million st). Substantial production losses occurred in Indiana, down 8% to 31 Mt (34.5 million st); and in western Kentucky, down 7.9% to 36 Mt (40 million st). Coal production in Texas rose 5.7% to 39 Mt (43.5 million st) in 1985. Louisiana began mining lignite 140 kt (151,000 st) during the year. Production in the western region increased 3.4% to 238 Mt (262.5 million st) in 1985. Wyoming, up 5.3% to 125 Mt (140 million st); and North Dakota, up 16.5% to 23.5 Mt (26 million st) contributing the largest amounts. Production gains were also shown in Washington, Utah and, notably, in Alaska where coal output climbed 72.9% to 1.3 Mt (1.5 million st) in 1985. Most of the additional coal produced in Alaska last year was shipped abroad. Coal stocks held by consumers totaled 154 Mt (170 million st) at the end of the year. This was 27 Mt (30 million st), or 13.7% below the inventory level at the end of 1984. Stocks held by producers and distributors declined by 868 kt (957,000 st), or 2.8% in 1985 to 30 Mt (33 million st). A drawdown in stockpiles occurred in each consumer sector during 1985. Stocks held by electric utilities totaled 142 Mt (156 million st) at the year's end, 13% lower than stock levels at the end of 1984.

Identifying high value areas of unmined coal when large quantities of coal are available relative to annual markets is difficult because of the uncertainty of when the coal is to be mined. A GIS based methodology developed to value reserve coal in a producing coal region for the purpose of ad valorem taxation also identifies high value areas for mining investment. The methodology is unique in that it accounts for most mining, environmental, and market factors to determine when specific properties are to be mined. The methodology and data base are useful for directing regional exploration and acquisition activities toward most favorable areas.

Dowsing is really IESG which inductively locates electric gradients (dv/dx) on the flanks of SP anomalies. "Sensors" are in one?s head. The "meter" consists of one?s body, limbs, and two $.69 welding rods. The method was calibrated near Mamainse Point, Ontario, where IESG-negative chalcopyrite-bornite-chalcocite-native copper ores reveal mineral zoning related to the IESG-positive Keweenaw fault, down which oxidizing solutions moved. In Michigan, the IESG-positive Keweenaw fault suggests that oxygen-bearing solutions from the Jacobsville Sandstone moved downward to oxidize hydrothermal sulfur to produce native copper, and to supply sufficient water to satisfy Walter White.

Paper 1: Risk of gastrointestinal cancers from inhalation and ingestion of asbestos, John F. Gamble Selikoff suggested the hypothesis that asbestos exposure is causally associated with increased risk of gastrointestinal (GI) cancers in an early study of insulation workers. In this paper, John Gamble reports on his extensive review and reanalysis studies that address the relationship between asbestos exposure and GI cancers. The purpose of the review was to evaluate the association between asbestos exposure and risks of stomach, colorectal, colon, and rectal cancers separately. Gamble evaluated exposure?response (E?R) relationships using surrogate exposure methods ??because few individual studies of GI cancer have reported exposure? response analyses.?? The principal asbestos exposure surrogates are: (1) the rate ratio (RR) for lung cancer; and (2) the percent of mesothelioma among exposed workers. Analyzing SMRs for GI cancers from individual studies versus the risk of lung cancer and mesothelioma provides crude estimates of E?Rs for asbestos exposure and GI cancer. In July 1997, Kvaerner Environmental signed a unique contract with Echo Bay Alaska called the Transfer Risk and Accelerate Closure (TRAC). The contract called for Kvaerner to assume the responsibilities and obligations associated with closeout of the Alaska-Juneau (A-J) Mine. Kvaerner is an international engineering and construction company with global interdisciplinary experience in the mining industry and environmental remediation. Echo Bay’s requirements called for Kvaerner to: •Provide a fixed price for closure with no change orders. •Negotiate, prepare and implement a final closeout plan as outlined by Echo Bay. •Complete a closure program that exceeded current regulatory requirements. •Improve, expand and maintain a proactive public and community relations program. •Hire Echo Bay employees where possible. •Provide adequate performance guarantees and judicial relief of environmental claims.

South Africa (SA), a country in which all three commercially important asbestos minerals have been mined and milled, has retained proven cases of mesothelioma linked with environmental exposure to asbestos. This study illustrates the importance of fiber type in the occurrence of environmental mesothelioma. Four studies have reviewed the source of occupational or environmental asbestos exposure in 504 histologically proven cases of mesothelioma in South Africa. One hundred and eighteen cases (23%) were thought to be related to environmental exposure to asbestos. In the vast majority of these cases, exposure was linked to crocidolite mining activities in the Northern Cape Province. Two cases were thought to have occurred in relation to amosite and Transvaal crocidolite exposure in the Limpopo Province. In the balance of cases there was some uncertainty. No cases were reported with exposure to South African chrysotile. Consequently, in the vast majority of cases of mesothelioma, environmental exposure to asbestos occurred in the Northern Cape Province, in proximity to mines, mills and dumps where crocidolite was processed. Crocidolite appears to be far more mesotheliomagenic than amosite, and chrysotile has not been implicated in the disease. A 70% excess of mesothelioma, an asbestos-related cancer, has been reported among men in northeastern Minnesota, where iron mining has been the major industry. The Minnesota Department of Health has studied iron miners who developed mesothelioma to identify possible sources of asbestos exposure. A database of all Minnesota residents diagnosed with mesothelioma between 1988 and 1996 was linked to a database of approximately 72,000 current and former Minnesota iron-mining employees to identify cases who had ever worked in the mining industry. The job histories of the cases were examined to determine if any of their jobs could have involved exposure to commercial asbestos. Seventeen individuals diagnosed with mesothelioma in Minnesota between 1988 and 1996 were found to have worked in the iron mining industry. Of the 15 for whom adequate work histories were available, 14 had identifiable sources of exposure to commercial asbestos in jobs held both inside and outside of the mining industry. The time between employment in these asbestosexposed occupations and the diagnosis of mesothelioma is consistent with the 20 or more year latency period that has been observed in other studies of this cancer. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. High metal prices and new world trade standards and accounting for environmental liability in financial disclosures are creating markets for metals commodities that are produced using ?green technologies?. A promising "green" gold leaching system uses a polysulfide based lixiviant which is non-toxic and non-polluting. Laboratory testing has demonstrated selective gold extraction rates comparable to those of cyanide. The polysulfide lixiviant is a dilute aqueous solution which can be inexpensively produced from readily available chemical reagents and even mining wastes. The reagent system is self-buffering and maintains the optimal chemical environment for leaching. Treatment of residual leach solutions is not necessary because the lixiviant itself is not toxic, and breaks down as the system equilibrates. Simple closed system boiling is used to recover gold from process solutions. The polysulfide lixiviant can then be readily renewed and recycled back into the system, forming a closed loop system that conserves reagents and energy which minimizes operating costs. Economic projections have shown that the system can be used profitably for standard ore types and grades.

1. Paper1?Identification and enumeration of asbestos fibers in the mining environment: mission and modification to the federal asbestos standard Arthur M. Langer Asbestos-related disease is increased with cumulative exposure (the concentration of asbestos in the air and duration of exposure). The maximum duration is assumed to be a working lifetime so federal agencies control cumulative exposure by limiting the airborne concentration of asbestos fibers equal to or greater than 5 lm in length. Air samples are collected in the environment of interest by entraining the airborne particulates including fibers on membrane filters and then counting the number of fibers using phase-contrast light microscopy. In addition to length, the fibers must have a length to width ratio of at least 3 to 1. This ratio is also referred to as the aspect ratio. Some counting strategies placed an upper limit on the fiber width restricting the counting to respirable fibers. Airborne asbestos is controlled by monitoring a sub-population of the airborne asbestos. No asbestos fibers shorter than 5 lm or fibers of any length having widths less than the resolution of the light optical method are counted. In the non-occupational environment, the Environmental Protection Agency requires the use of analytical transmission electron microscopy and fibers and counting fibers with lengths of 0.5 lm or greater and aspect ratios of 5 to 1 or greater are counted. The permissible exposure limit for asbestos has been reduced by more than 120-fold since 1969, when the standard was 12 fiber/ml and the current monitoring methodology was developed. The manufacturing and mining worksites are regulated by two different federal agencies and the asbestos exposure limit was higher in the mining environment until recently (Mine Safety and Health Administration 30 CFR Part 56, 57, and 7, Federal Registry, February 29, 2008). Currently the permissible exposure limit (PEL) is the same in both types of workplace and it is 0.1 fibers per milliliter (fiber/ml) over an 8-h shift as a time-weighted average (TWA). A milliliter (ml) is equivalent to a cubic centimeter (cc) and sometimes this standard is reported as 0.1 f/cc. As the phase-contrast methodology was used to monitor lower exposures and environments, other fibrous mineral particulates were incorrectly characterized as asbestos. These occurred in talc deposits and taconite ores from the Eastern Mesabi Range.

Paper 1?South African experience with asbestos-related environmental mesothelioma: Is fiber type important? Neil White, Gill Nelson, Jill Murray The purpose of this review was to illustrate the importance of the type of asbestos in environmental mesothelioma. South Africa is a logical place to assess fiber type. The three major types of asbestos (crocidolite, amosite and chrysotile) were mined (all asbestos mining stopped in 2002) in South Africa. The association between asbestos and mesothelioma was discovered in South Africa. The occupational literature indicates high mesotheliomagenic potential for crocidolite, less for amosite and less still for chrysotile. Since South Africa has been a major source of crocidolite, relatively high rates of mesothelioma in the mining population is not surprising. High rates of mesothelioma due to environmental exposure is surprising, except perhaps when the authors? point out potential sources for community exposures (e.g., mine tailings used for road surfacing, golf courses, brick and plaster making; insulation in residential ceilings; children playing on fiber-rich waste rock). The authors? reviewed four studies reporting on mesothelioma cases and their sources of exposure and fiber type. Overall 23% of the known cases were attributed to the environmental (not occupational) exposure and about 90% were due to crocidolite asbestos. The proportion of environmental mesothelioma is considerably higher than in Western Australia where crocidolite is also mined. There the overall rate of environmental mesothelioma is about 6% (and less than 1% from residence in a crocidolite mining area).

Asbestos fibers are highly fibrous silicate fibers that are distinguished by having a large aspect (length to diameter) ratio and are crystallized in an asbestiform habit that causes them to separate into very thin fibers or fibrils. These fibers are distinct from nonasbestiform cleavage fragments and may appear as thick, short fibers which break along cleavage planes without the high strength and flexibility of asbestiform fibers. Since cleavage fragments of respirable dimensions have generally proven nonpathogenic in animal studies, little data exists on assessing well-characterized preparations of cleavage fragments in in vitro models. The available studies show that cleavage fragments are less bioreactive and cytotoxic than asbestiform fibers. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. The Reserve Mining Co., in the processing of taconite iron ore quarried from the Peter Mitchell Pit, deposited the finely crushed waste rock into Lake Superior near Silver Bay Minnesota. In the early 1970s The U.S. Environmental Protection agency filed a lawsuit against Reserve Mining Co., asking the court to force the company to stop dumping into the lake. On April 20, 1974, after a lengthy court battle, the U.S. District Court concluded that the Reserve Mining discharge into Lake Superior violated federal and state pollution laws and thus ordered Reserve Mining Co., to halt the lake disposal of taconite tailings. At the time many feared that some of the mineral particles contained in the tailings (alleged to be asbestos or asbestos-like) would cause human health problems. This Conference was thus convened to readdress the problem of the mineral content of the Biwabik Iron Formation and to whether any minerals contained in the ore could cause human disease. The four papers given in this session address the nature of the mineral particles in the taconite rock, the definition of the term ??asbestos?? and the history of the legal controversy over the possible health effects of certain mineral particles contained in the Biwabik iron range ores. Morey The Biwabik Iron Formation was a principal source of ore for the American steel industry during the 20th Century. The unaltered iron deposits, called taconite, contain approximately 30% iron and 50% SiO2. About 75% of the iron in taconite resides in the mineral magnetite, the remainder is largely in iron carbonate and several iron-silicate minerals.
