Only 40% of fly ash generated by the power plants in US are recycled and used for commercial applications. Of these, the high lime, Class C ash had been preferred. Systematic laboratory and field-scale studies have shown that, by including calcium chloride in the mix design of stabilization of roadbed materials, both Class C and Class F fly ashes can be effectively utilized. Test data reveal that the addition of calcium chloride to the system accelerates its curing rate, thereby increasing early strength and long term durability of the constructed road. For road construction, a preblended Class F fly ash–CaCl2 system tends to be more forgiving than the Class C fly ash–CaCl2 system. The former system produces more durable roads. The role of calcium chloride as an accelerator in these systems is discussed along with a mathematical model developed for fly ash- CaCl2 stabilized roadbed systems.

Studies by Bertram et al (2002) have also affirmed that waste electrical and electronic components are the fastest growing waste category; this emphasizes the need for efficient recycling strategies. Recycling of electronic waste is an important subject not only from the point of waste treatment but also from the recovery aspect of valuable materials. However, recycling of electronic scrap is still quite limited due to the heterogeneity of the materials present in the products (Veit et al. 2005). A bioleaching based process offers a number of advantages compared to the conventional pyro or hydrometallurgical methods (Lee et al. 2007; Lee and Pandey, 2012). The advantages include simple, inexpensive (in some cases) and eco-friendly approach besides, generation of less active leach residue then other metallurgical processes. Though, biohydrometallurgical process has been successfully applied for the leaching of metals from ores (Olson et al. 2003; Rawling 2000), data pertaining to its application for the extraction of electronic scrap is still scanty. Recently, a few studies have been undertaken for extraction of metals from electronic scrap/printed circuit boards (Brandl et al. 2001; Faramarzi et al. 2004; Choi et al. 2004, Ilyas et al. 2007; Ilyas et al. 2010). These studies were conducted with mesophilic chemolithotrophic (Acidithiobacillus ferooxidans and Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans) or cyanogenic bacteria (Chromobacterium violaceum) or moderate thermophilic bacteria (Sulfobacillus thermosulfidooxidans). However, compared to bacterial leaching, fungal leaching has the following advantages: (i) ability to grow under higher pH, and thus is more suitable in bioleaching of alkaline solid waste (ii) a generally faster leaching process with shorter lag phase (iii) Chelation of excreted metabolites (e.g. organic acids) with metal ion, thus reduce its toxicity to the biomass (Burgstaller et al. 1993; Aung and Ting 2005). Electrostatically charged water droplets efficiently suppress breathable dust produced during open air rock crushing operations, according to recently completed independent tests conducted for the Environmental Protection Agency. Since a primary rock crusher produces very heavy clouds of dust, this application was selected as an appropriate test site to measure the efficiencies of new "charged fogging" equipment in mining and mineral processing operations. EPA's Industrial Environmental Research Laboratory, Research Triangle Park, NC, contracted TRC-Environmental Consultants Inc. of Wethersfield, CT, to conduct a full-scale demonstration of a recently developed electrostatic fogger, designed to project a charged fog spray at distances up to 15.2 m. Test results indicated overall fogger efficiencies of approximately 70%. The Fogger IV* employed in these tests is reportedly the largest charged logger ever made, with an extremely long operating range. The original fogger was designed for indoor dust control; this fourth generation version is designed for fugitive dusts, indoor and outdoor, and has an operating range up to 15.2 in.

History The Cortez Mining District has a long history of mining activity dating back to 1862. More recently, Cortez Gold Mines had operated a cyanide leach, counter current decantation (CCD) recovery gold mill from January 1969 to February 1976. This type of plant has been standard in the US for treating higher grade, finely disseminated gold in Carlin type ores. The mill was initially operated from 1969 to 1973 at 1.5 kt/d (1650 stpd) on oxidized ore from the Cortez ore body. In 1973, the mill was operated at 2 kt/d (2200 stpd) on softer, less oxidized, high clay ore from Gold Acres, located 13 km (8 miles) west of Cortez, NV. In February 1976, the oxidized portion of the ore body at Gold Acres was depleted and the mill ceased operations. Successful heap leaching of the lower grade portion of the ores was practiced at both Cortez and Gold Acres to supplement the milling operations. Valuable experience was gained in the operation of these two heap leaching programs (Duncan and Smolik, 1977). The ore heaps at Gold Acres and Cortez were releached with a limited crew from 1976 to 1979. The surge in the price of gold in late 1979 sparked an interest to incorporate new techniques into treating lower grade and less oxidized carbonaceous ores at Cortez. In early 1980, heap leaching was started on low grade oxidized dump material left from the earlier Cortez mining operation. By June of 1980, testwork was completed on the London Extension Dump, a low grade, mildly carbonaceous dump at Gold Acres. It was decided to convert the mill at Cortez from the conventional cyanide leach CCD recovery plant to a carbon-in-leach (CIL) recovery system. In May 1983, ore processing from the Horse Canyon deposit began. The Horse Canyon ore body contains both oxide and carbonaceous ores and is located 22.5 km (14 miles) from the Cortez mill. The Cortez CIL circuit was expanded to handle a blend of oxide and carbonaceous ores from Horse Canyon. Ore selection In the last quarter 1979, gold prices were increasing to a point where restarting the Cortez mill, idled since 1976, appeared imminent. Several previously explored geologic reserves at various stages of development were available as possible sources of feed for the mill. Initial metallurgical testing of dumps and tailings from earlier operations was completed, and previously uneconomic deposits were explored. It was decided to pursue sources of ore with the least lead time to production and those with the least capital cost requirements. A master plan was developed to bring the four profitable ore resources into production. Canada is a world class producer and exporter of minerals and mineral products. Canadian open-pit mines are highly mechanized and use state-of-the-art equipment and support technology. During the past few years, productivity improvements at Canadian open-pit mines have been achieved by taking advantage of larger equipment, in-pit crushing and conveying, truck dispatch systems and electronic management tools. The most recent developments are related to hydraulic transportation and the application of global positioning systems (GPS). Mine planning has become computerized. Environmental issues are dealt with in all phases of planning. Equipment modifications are pursued with vigor to keep the equipment functioning in the hostile Canadian north. In 1997, the mining and mineral processing sector employed 370,000 Canadians, contributing $26.2 billion to Canada's gross domestic product (GDP). The value of production of the Canadian mineral industry, including coal, amounted to $19.1 billion in 1997. Gold remained Canada's leading mineral with production valued at $2.8 billion. This was followed by copper ($2 billion), coal ($1.9 billion), zinc ($1.6 billion) and nickel ($1.9 billion). [ ] Synthetic crude oil from oil-sands mining operations in Alberta represents an important part of Canada's petroleum production. In 1997, the value of synthetic oil production was $2.87 billion. Canadian oil-sands mining has contributed significant technology developments in Canada.

This paper will deal with some of the considerations which, were involved in the design and construction of the uranium mills in the Elliot Lake area . These plants, eleven in number, range from 1500 to 6500 tons per day milling capacity. Most references are with respect to the seven plants in the Rio Tinto Group which have a combined milling capacity in excess of 20,000 tons per day. In dealing with such abroad subject as mill design, one has the choice, of covering a few specific problems in great detail, or else attempting to cover many subjects superficially and briefly. In preparing this presentation, an attempt has been made to compromise on these extremes, and to select some interesting illustrations which are of general interest in the field of mill design, and of value to persons concerned with mill design broadly, beyond the field of uranium mills.

The Buchans mining district is located roughly at the center of the island of Newfoundland and contains some 18 separate mineral deposits. The first of these deposits was discovered in 1905, the latest discovery having been made in 1979. To the present (1983), some 16 Mt (17.7 million st) grading 1.33% Cu, 7.5% Pb, 14.5% Zn, 115 g/ t (3.7 oz per ton) Ag, and 1.4 g/t (0.04 oz per ton) Au have been mined. Mining operations are now largely terminated, but a few hundred thousand tons of economically marginal reserves may be mined in a salvage operation. The Geological Association of Canada Special Paper No. 22, "The Buchans Orebodies, 50 years of Mining and Exploration," contains papers which describe the history, geology, and the application of evolving geological concepts in exploration. Papers by Neary, Swanson, and Thurlow and Swanson in that volume are topical to the present discussion. Successful exploration techniques at Buchans included physical prospecting, utilization of the state-of-the-art geophysical techniques, saturation diamond drilling which was made possible by the high gross value of the existing ore, and, since 1955, diamond drilling directed by fairly well understood geological parameters. The record of discovery started in 1905 when the Buchans River deposit was found by Matty Mitchell, a prospector employed by the Anglo- Newfoundland Development Co., a British company which owned mineral rights over a very large area in the Red Indian Lake-Exploits River drainage system.

Partition models are commonly used to assess the separation performance of circuits incorporating density-based processes. Unfortunately, this useful tool has traditionally been overlooked by the heavy minerals sands industry due to difficulties associated with the use of toxic dense liquids. In the present study, this problem has been avoided via the development of partition models based on experimental data from microscopic grain-counts. This technique, which uses different mineral species as density tracers, provides a new tool for evaluating the multi-stage circuits that are required to successfully upgrade heavy mineral sands. The partition model approach easily identifies shortcomings of existing circuits and, when used with conjunction with linear circuit analysis, provides tremendous insight regarding the optimum arrangement of unit operations in terms of separation efficiency and plant throughput capacity. An industrial case involving the redesign of a heavy mineral sand spiral plant is presented to demonstrate the utility of these process engineering tools in plant optimization.

Soda ash is the trade name for sodium carbonate, a chemical refined from the mineral trona or naturally occurring sodium carbonate-bearing brines (both referred to as natural soda ash) or manufactured from one of several chemical processes (referred to as synthetic soda ash). It is an essential raw material in glass, chemicals, detergents and other important industrial products. Production U.S. soda ash production during 2004 increased to10.9 million Mt (12 million st). Five companies comprised the domestic soda ash industry. Four were in Wyoming operating five plants. One was in California with one plant.

Work related pulmonary diseases are in the top TEN causes of occupational disability and death in the United States. Likewise, it also ranks high inmost of the other industrial countries. It is difficult to know the true occurrence of occupational lung disease because of poor documentation. This is especially true when one examines workers’ compensation claims. Most frequently, silica and asbestos are paramount in our discussion of work related pulmonary disease. Little consideration is given to other “dust-related” diseases, irritant reactions, reactive airway responses, and hypersensitivity reactions. The major classification of occupational lung diseases will be discussed. This includes both acute and chronic disease that arises in the work place, especially, the mining industry. It’s more important to make an accurate evaluation and diagnosis for the prevention of disease among other workers.

The Pebble Cu-Au-Mo deposit in southwest Alaska is one of the world's largest porphyry deposits. The western part of the deposit was discovered by Cominco America in 1987, who sold the project to Northern Dynasty Minerals Ltd., in 2001. Northern Dynasty discovered the high-grade eastern part of the deposit in 2004 and went into a 50:50 partnership with Anglo American PLC in 2007, forming the Pebble Limited Partnership (Lang et al., 2008). The Pebble Limited Partnership has continued to delineate the deposit through diamond drilling with the most recent resource estimate released in February 2010 (Pebble Limited Partnership, 2010). The Pebble deposit mineral resources comprise 5.94 billion tonnes of measured and indicated resources grading 0.78% Cu EQ, containing 55 billion pounds of copper, 67 million ounces of gold and 3.3 billion pounds of molybdenum. Also delineated are 4.84 billion tonnes of inferred mineral resources grading 0.53% Cu EQ, containing 25.6 billion pounds of copper, 40.4 million ounces of gold and 2.3 billion pounds of molybdenum (Pebble Limited Partnership, 2010). Resources are calculated using a 0.3% Cu EQ cutoff. GEOLOGY AND MINERALIZATION Deposit Geology The Pebble deposit is located in the Kahiltna terrane, between terminal strands of the north-east-striking Lake Clarke strike-slip fault. This fault represents an accretionary boundary and separates the Kahiltna terrane to the north-west from the Peninsular terrane to the south-east (Lang et al., 2008). The Pebble deposit represents a large magmatic-hydrothermal system centered on a group of 90 million year old porphyritic hornblende granodiorite intrusions. An east-west cross section through the southern part of the deposit (Figure 1A) shows the typical relationships between the various rock units which host sulfide mineralization. Sub-parallel ~96 million year old granodiorite and diorite sills were intruded into siltstones of the Jura-Cretaceous Kahiltna flysch. In the west, these sills were cut by a ~96 million year old alkalic intrusive complex composed of porphyritic monzonites and monzodiorites and related intrusion breccias (Bouley et al, 1995). The mineralized 90 million year old hornblende granodiorite intrusions cut all rock types and comprise four small stocks in the western part of the deposit and a larger pluton in the eastern part of the deposit. Recent deep drilling indicates that these intrusions coalesce at depth. The strongest porphyry-style mineralization is centered on the eastern granodiorite pluton and extends into the surrounding rock units (Figure 1A). The western half of the deposit crops out at surface, whereas the eastern side is un-conformably overlain by a cover sequence of Late Cretaceous to Eocene sedimentary and volcanic strata. The deposit was tilted 20º to the east during the Eocene.

An accepted statement of fact is that, next to agriculture, transportation is the second most important industry in the world. The transportation networks of the United States have greatly contributed to our nation's growth and prosperity. The objective here is to make the reader aware of the need for communication between geologists, mining engineers, purchasing agents, and transportation managers. Only through a cooperative effort is it possible to reap the benefits of transportation in the industrial minerals field. Transportation is often thought of in terms of trucks, rail cars, barges, and covered wagons. There is much more. Corning Inc. Corning Glass Works is a worldwide organization with more than $2 billion in annual sales. It supplies more than 60,000 different products a year to some 47,000 customer firms and millions of individual consumers. Corning operates 32 of its own plants worldwide and is also an investor with a 50-50 or minority position in 24 affiliated companies in 11 countries. Corning competes in four broad business categories: • specialty glass and ceramics; • consumer housewares; • laboratory sciences; and • telecommunications Binding these four sectors together is the glue of technology. Coming's research laboratory, established in 1908, was one of the first in American industry. That early commitment to research has never wavered. Today, Corning spends annually on research and devel¬opment, as a percentage of sales, at double the average rate for all manufacturing industry in the US. Some 1500 scientists, engineers, and support personnel are now employed at the company's research and development centers in the US, Japan, and France. Petalite background A family of materials melted conventionally as a glass, then converted by special processing to a ceramic was invented in 1957. One of the basic minerals in this glass ceramic product is petalite. Petalite is a monoclinic mineral with a framework silicate structure and a low iron content, about 0.06% Fe2O3. Petalite is found in very few places throughout the world and no commercial petalite deposit has been found in the United States. Sizable deposits occur in Zimbabwe, Southwest Africa, Brazil, Australia, the Soviet Union, and Sweden. Coming's purchasing and geology departments located a source of petalite with proven reserves in what was then known as Rhodesia. The supplier was Bikita Minerals. The relationship with Bikita was one in which Bikita supplied bulk ore that Corning processed into a finished material at its US facility. This bulk ore method of shipment resulted in high losses through contamination and processing. It also caused tank upsets at the Corning plant because of iron contamination picked up through the numerous handlings of this product in bulk. The relationship with Bikita continued until 1965 when the white political leadership of Rhodesia declared its independence from Great Britain. This led to the imposition of international sanctions. The sanctions were lifted in 1980 and the relationship with Bikita was reestablished in 1983.

Computer simtiation is a technique that has beers around for many years. Its applications include designing steel mills, planning space shota, or even developing ways to beat the casinos in Las Vegas. However, the use of computer sirndation in surface coal mining is fairly recent. Pre-combustion coal cleaning and post-combustion flue gas desulfurization (FGD) using lime or limestone are the primary methods employed to reduce sulfur dioxide (SO2) emission from coal combustion. These processes generate voluminous pyrite and gypsum solid wastes that are usually landfilled, occupying thousands of acres of land and creating serious land and water pollution problems due to the release of acids and toxic substances. An integrated process has been developed for the combined utilization of gypsum and pyrite wastes by converting them into useful products including lime, sulfur, and direct reduced iron (DRI). The process includes four major steps. The first step is to concentrate pyrite from coal preparation tailings using flotation or gravity separation. The second is the thermal decomposition of pyrite into pyrrhotite and sulfur. This is followed by the reduction of pyrrhotite with carbon in the presence of lime to produce iron and calcium sulfide. The fourth step involves the reaction of calcium sulfide with gypsum to produce lime. The chemical reactions involved in the process were studied using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and X-ray diffraction (XRD)techniques. Process variables studied included reaction temperature, time, reactant composition, and purity of reactants.

Field density studies carried out at the Phelps Dodge Chino Mine have found that truck-induced compaction is limited to the upper 2.4 meters (8 feet) of an individual lift. Hydraulic properties of material compacted to field densities were determined in a laboratory setting and saturated flow models were then run, simulating the effect of compacted zones within a stockpile. Modeling shows that compaction can effectively prevent solution flow through large portions of the stockpile, implying that great care must be taken to ensure that ripping is carried out to a full depth of at least 2.4 meters (8 feet) across the entire stockpile to achieve uniform solution flow. Uniform solution flow will result in maximum leach recovery.

Common clay is a natural, fine-grained material composed of hydrous aluminum silicates. Shale is a laminated sedimentary rock that is formed by the consolidation of clay, mud or silt. Production About 160 companies produced common clay and shale in 41 states. In states not reporting production, common clay and shale probably was mined and sold for construction applications by companies not participating in the U.S. Geological Survey’s canvass of producers.

A Method to Calculate Hydrodynamic Loads on Underground Bulkheads Bulkheads are structures built in openings in underground mines to impound water, preventing the water from entering the active mine workings. These structures not only have to be designed to withstand the static, hydraulic pressure, but also the dynamic or seismic pressure, which would be generated by an earthquake. Bulkheads can be considered underground dams. Unlike dams on the surface, bulkheads are often subjected to hydraulic heads that exceed the heights of the bulkheads. Theodor von Karman in 1933, and Westergaard earlier, developed the equation by which the hydrodynamic pressures on surface dams could be calculated. Civil engineering handbooks of today contain this equation. In this paper, using the methodology developed by von Karman and Westergaard, the authors have developed an equation by which the hydrodynamic forces on bulkheads could be calculated when the hydraulic head exceeds the height of the bulkhead.

The evaluation of raw materials in terms of quality profile, mineralogical character and mechanical properties is of great importance to the cement industry. The variability of their chemistry and structure is among the decisive design parameters in the choice of any mining, handling and preblending systems. Furthermore, clinker and cement production require sound estimates of the above parameters, to help produce some appropriate and realistic raw mix configurations and achieve minimum standard deviation of the major components. This paper addresses this subject from the perspective of a cement producer and presents the principles of a methodology aimed at optimizing mine planning and process design. Finally, results from case studies on actual sedimentary deposits currently in operation are discussed.

The author?s paper at RETC 2007, ?Alternative Contracting Methods? addressed strengths and weaknesses of DBB+DB and introduced Construction Manager/General Contractor (Portland model) and Alliancing (Australian model). Considerable interest in these was expressed by several public agencies at that Conference and at the presentation. The author is assisting the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) and the Toronto Waterfront Revitalization Corporation (TWRC) with possible implementation of Alliancing. WSDOT is evaluating ways to do this and is considering a delivery methodology, under existing Legislation, based on the CMGC Portland model with incentives and disincentives, moving towards Alliancing. This paper will build on the 2007 paper and update implementation considerations.
