Introduction In terms of the world's recoverable coal reserves, Canada ranks 10th, providing 0.6% of the world's total. The US is first with 27.8% and the Soviet Union follows with 24.1%. Figure 1 shows the principal coal mines in Canada. Several provinces contain substantial coal deposits, but the largest deposits are found in the western provinces of Alberta, British Columbia, and Saskatchewan. Conservatively, 90% of the lignitic, 80% of high volatile bituminous, and nearly 100% of subbituminous, and low and medium volatile bituminous coals are located in these three provinces. During the past decade, Canadian coal production of all types increased from 18.8 Mt (2 million st) in 1972, to 25 Mt (28 million st) in 1975, to 61 Mt (66 million st) in 1984. About 38 Mt (43 million st) of this output was classified at thermal and 23 Mt (25 million st) as coking and metallurgical coal (Table 1). The three western provinces currently produce 57 Mt (62 million st) of coal - 95% of Canada's total. The remaining 3.6 Mt (4 million st) (5%) is produced in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick on the east coast. The majority of western coal (98%) is produced by surface mining methods. On the east coast, though, mining is predominantly underground and only 15% is produced on the surface. In 1985, Canada exported close to 28 Mt (30 million st) of metallurgical coal and thermal coal. During the same period, 15 Mt (16 million st) of coal were imported, mostly from western US for use in Ontario and Quebec. Almost 60% of the imported coal was used for thermal applications. The remaining 40% was metallurgical coal for the steel industry. It is generally cheaper to import coal into central and eastern Canada from the eastern US to augment local supplies rather than from western Canada. There is as yet no accepted method of predicting flotation frother performance in plant processes based on laboratory scale characterisation techniques. This paper investigates the use of dynamic surface tension, using the maximum bubble pressure method, as a means of evaluating frothers and frother mixtures. An adsorption model is presented, which has been used to quantify the role of frother type and concentration during frother bubble interaction, based on the correlation of model parameters to physical frother characteristics. This approach was found to provide useful insight with respect to blending and selection of flotation frothers to meet specified flotation performance criteria.

Stillwater Mining Company is currently developing a second underground palladium and platinum mine approximately 21 km (13 miles) west of their existing Nye operation in the Bear tooth Mountains of southern Montana. Portals for the two access tunnels required at the new site were excavated in limestone talus to accommodate4.6 m (15 feet) diameter tunnel boring machines. A review of the technical design, field conditions and construction of the portals is presented.

Blasor is a new mine planning tool which is being used in the long and medium-term optimization of multi-open-pit operations throughout BHP Billiton’s Base Metals and bulk commodities portfolio. It is not just a scheduler, nor even only a schedule optimizer—although this function lies at the heart of the tool’s functionality—but a pit development plan optimizer, used from ultimate pit design and process plant capacity sizing right through to mining phase design and optimal panel scheduling. The tool uses a mixed-integer-linear-programming optimization engine to determine when material should be excavated and where it should be sent to optimize discounted operating cash flow over the life of operation. The core software design concept of Blasor is to provide a tool which is intuitive and flexible enough so that a competent mine planner can perform a pit development plan optimization without assistance from optimization specialists. To this end, a generalized graphical user interface has been implemented which allows full configuration of the optimization problem, including the definition of all inputs and constraints, specification of the material flow topology, bin and destination class definitions and full specification of the economic model encompassing prices and costs. This paper describes the capability of Blasor and outlines the design concepts underlying its design philosophy.

Several universities and colleges in Australia, Canada and the United States, recognized the need to establish or reorganize geoscience programs at the vocational and two-year technical levels. To accomplish this, a cooperative study with industry in one state or province from each country was initiated. These include Tasmania in Australia, British Columbia in Canada and Alaska in the United States. The objective of this work was to develop a diversified geoscience educational model at the two-year technical, vocational and continuing education level that provides the source from which any nation can draw the proper educational tools to create a new geoscience program, modernize an existing program or strengthen a weak program. More than 100 mineral industry organizations provided information regarding their specific training needs for support personnel. The data gathered have been used to identify training areas for semi-skilled, skilled and technical personnel in geochemical mineral exploration. These included geological, geochemical, environmental and computer skills. With the areas of major educational need defined for geochemical exploration, an educational field skills model was developed for the three levels of training. The international need for a study of this type was recognized as early as 1980, following numerous contacts from domestic and foreign geoscience educators regarding the structure and success of training within the University of Alaska Fairbanks Mining Extension program, located in Fairbanks. Contacts, correspondence and visits included educators from Australia, Brazil, Canada, Mozambique and the conterminous United States. The need was magnified between 1985 and 1989 at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, when an attempt failed at initiating and developing a two-year geoscience vocational-technology program leading to an Associate of Science degree.

With more than 800 booth spaces sold and 540 exhibiting companies displaying their wares, there was something for everyone on the exhibit floor of the 2014 SME Annual Meeting in Salt Lake City, UT Feb. 23-26. The following is a sample of what was offered at the 2014 meeting.

If it had not been for the almost unbelievable adventures that came before and after, the last ten months of 19 15 would have been exciting enough for anyone. As it was they were a cheerful interlude. I spent most of the time on our Warren operations catching up on a lot of underground work and visiting Ajo every few weeks to see if my Chuquicamata visit might help solve the New Cornelia problem. While the difficulties were finally solved, at times they seemed almost hopeless. About all I could do to help was to make sure that the ore sent to the pilot plants represented the average ore that must be treated in the final 5000 tpd mill. Dr. Ricketts and John Greenway worked tirelessly with the best consulting advice they could obtain. Credit for the final success was due chiefly to their efforts. Since our old group had given up its "Merry Widow" home in Warren, a few of us got rooms in the company-built Cole Building over the Warren grocery store. This included Jim Lewis, Roy Mitchell, Steve Landon, Paul Stevens, and Hubert d'Autremont who came from Duluth to join our legal staff. Later we rented a small house two blocks from the Calumet and Arizona office. With the now flourishing country club only a 10-min walk away, and an electric car running to it every half hour or so, we were able to give parties in return for the hospitality of our friends. One of the most pleasant episodes came by luck a few days after I got back from Chile. Chester Congdon, a leading director in Calumet and Arizona, with his wife and their daughters, Elizabeth and Helen, spent a couple of days at the Greenway house before making an auto- mobile trip across the desert from Tucson to Ajo. At the same time I arranged to examine the small but rich Bush and Baxter copper mine a few miles from Tucson. Arsenic is among the list of major contaminants in mining aqueous waste streams. Though the elemental form is toxic, the aqueous oxyanions are more so. The most common forms of arsenic released during mining processes are arsenate and arsenite. The common treatment technologies to date can be summed up in these major categories: oxidation, coagulation, absorption, and media filtration. These methods can often involve many expensive processing steps that may also be limited by variables, such as total dissolved solids, other cations and anions, and the oxidation state of the arsenic. An innovative technology, falling in the absorption category, was developed that can successfully reduce such aqueous forms to a level below the EPA recommendations. This new technology offers a unique and viable solution which is transparent to the above mentioned limitations.

The Getchell Mine, near Winnemucca, NR, was discovered in the 1930s and was initially mined to recover gold from oxide ores. During the 1940s and 1950s, gold was recovered from the highly refractory arsenic sulfide ores using horizontal kilns to roast the ores. During the 1960s, fluid bed roasters were used to oxidize the ore and recover the gold. The mine was shut down from 1968 through 1985. In 1985, heap leaching was started on the low-grade oxide ores that were available. In 1989, a pressure oxidation circuit was started to recover gold from the higher grade sulfide ores. Flowsheet The basic plant flowsheet of the Getchell Mine are shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The plant was designed to process a nominal 2.7 kt/d (3000 stpd) of ore with about an 85% onstream availability and a gold production of 15.5 kg/d (500 oz/ day). Run-of-mine (ROM) ore is fed directly to a wet semiautogenuous grinding (SAG) mill after the +457-µm (+18in.) rock is removed on a stationary grizzly. From the SAG mill, the ore goes to a ball mill where it is ground to 80% -75 µm (-200 mesh) and is then sent to a thickener. The SAG and ball mill operate in closed circuit using cyclones.

Industrial Minerals commodity profiles are continued from May's Annual Review issue. Diatomite G. Coombs, Manville Sales Corp. Growth in US diatomite production continued to lag in 1986. The US Bureau of Mines estimated that 580 kt (640,000 st) were produced last year. This is a 1%0 growth over 1985. The cumulative growth from the 1982 low point is 4.4%. Present production, though, is still only 90% of the high tonnage of 1979. The industry will see increased competitive activity with the start-ups of two new mines and production facilities in California and Oregon. US production has come primarily from Lompoc, CA, Bassalt, Clark Station, and Lovelock, NV, and Quincy, WA. New production, probably with capacities of 45 kt/a (50,000 stpy) each, have started near Burney, CA, and Vale, OR. Eagle Picher's new, full-line filter aid and filler plant at Celatom, Vale, OR, was dedicated in August. The plant uses diatomite from the Celatom mining district in Juntura, OR. Grefco's new filter aid and filler plant near Burney, CA, was ready in July. It produced flux calcined products through a single kiln and can handle both bag and bulk shipments. The operations are in Shata County with the plant and mine at the same site. Manville Specialties Group is moving its Filtration and Minerals Division headquarters and research staffs to Lompoc, CA. The move is intended to strengthen response and performance by locating research, marketing, and production close together. Diatomite is processed in three methods: natural, calcined, and flux calcined. The natural is dried to remove water and is particle size classified. Calcined or straight calcined products have been sintered to modify particle size or permeability. Flux calcination, or flux sintering, has a stronger influence on permeability and also benefits color. The unique structure of diatomite is used in a range of particle sizes from fine paint fillers, to coarser filter aids, to granular aggregates. Dimension stone L. Meade, Geomapping Associates Ltd. 1986 was another good year for dimension stone production. The trend toward using marble, granite, limestone, sandstone, and slate has created an increasing demand. According to US Bureau of Mines 1986 estimates, 1.1 Mt (1.2 million st) of dimension stone, with a value of $173 million, was produced by 200 companies. This is an increase from 1985, where 220 companies produced 1 Mt (1.12 million st) valued at $172 million. The increased production volume and decreased unit value is due to the competition from imports. The net import reliance in 1986 was 68% compared to 62% in 1985. The value of imports was $374 million in 1986 versus $295 million the year before. In an effort to maintain their market share, domestic finishers, particularly in the granite industry, continued to upgrade plants and machinery during 1986. In addition, offshore dollars have financed a number of fabricating facilities in North America that will finish imported rough stock. It is hoped that this increased domestic production capability will capitalize on a devalued US dollar. The trend has been for growth in stone usage and market. This trend is continuing with increased public awareness and desire for natural stone in buildings. The area of greatest market growth is expected to be in residential and interior decorative stone usage. Use of sophisticated, automated equipment has made the cost more affordable. Now lobbies, foyers, and specialty rooms are being clad in stone. Dolomite J. Welshimer, National Lime & Stone Co. About three-quarters of dolomite production is used as construction aggregates and 10% to 20% is sold or used as an industrial mineral. Total limestone and dolomite consumed for chemical and metallurgical purposes is about 136 Mt/a (150 million stpy). Sales of industrial dolomitic products were somewhat stronger in 1986 than levels recorded in the early 1980s. Some of the sales' strength, however, can be attributed to reductions in the number of active mining and processing operations. The industry will probably undergo further consolidation by the end of this decade. This will be due primarily to the continued softening in demand by the steel industry. Dolomitic limestone deposits being mined for raw materials for the steel, glass, and refractory in¬dustries are generally 54% calcium carbonate and 45% magnesium carbonate by weight. Impurities composed of silicon, aluminum, iron, sulfur, and phosphorous, represent less than 1%. The heaviest concentration of high purity, surface mineable dolomite in the US is in northwestern Ohio. Crushed and sized dolomitic limestone is a basic raw material for the iron and steel industry. This paper presents tunnel design considerations for the SR75/282 Transportation Corridor Project in Coronado, California. The project is managed by the City of Coronado in cooperation with Caltrans and the US Navy and may include a one-mile long twin-tunnel section with two options: a 36.5 foot diameter twin-bored tunnel or a twin cut-and-cover box. The alignment crosses the Coronado Fault, and design provisions were needed at the fault crossing to maintain life safety and prevent rapid inundation of the tunnel in the event of fault rupture. These provisions are discussed along with considerations related to liquefaction and ground shaking. The project is currently in the planning stage with construction to start around 2012.

"The Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County is planning to construct a new, approximately 7-mile-long (11.3 km) effluent outfall tunnel to be excavated by TBM and lined with precast concrete segments. Anticipated net operating pressures within the tunnel are expected to approach 3 bar. To counteract joint opening and exfiltration leakage, an approach has been investigated to post-tension the precast concrete tunnel lining with steel tendons. The tunnel alignment crosses several seismically active fault zones, at which installation of steel pipe is proposed as a secondary inner lining to mitigate potential offset displacements. This paper discusses the tunnel lining design approach and methods used to address these unique challenges.INTRODUCTION The Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County (Sanitation Districts) is planning to construct a new 18-foot-diameter (5.5 m), approximately 7-mile-long (11.3 km) tunnel from the Joint Water Pollution Control Plant (JWPCP), located in the City of Carson, to the existing White Point outfall manifold structure at Royal Palms State Beach (RPSB) (Figure 1). The project is part of the Sanitation Districts’ Clearwater Program, which will improve overall system reliability through the repair and replacement of the existing aging infrastructure. The existing system includes two 6-mile-long (9.7 km) tunnels, 8- and 12-feet in diameter (2.4 and 3.7 m), and four ocean outfall pipes with a maximum capacity of approximately 675 million gal/day (MGD) (2.6 billion L/day). Addition of the new parallel tunnel will increase overall capacity to accommodate peak wet weather wastewater flows of up to 1,262 MGD (4.8 billion L/day) and will allow inspection and repair of the existing tunnels. The new outfall tunnel will be excavated using a pressurized face tunnel boring machine (TBM). Shafts at the north (JWPCP Shaft) and south (RPSB Shaft) ends of the proposed alignment will connect the tunnel to the existing wastewater treatment plant and existing ocean outfalls manifold and during construction act as launch and receiving shafts for the TBM. The tunnel will be excavated from north to south as a single heading."

In creating a surface mine design, a complicated series of events may be required to meet both mining and environmental objectives. Envisioning the mine at every step of the operation can greatly assist the engineer to identify design and operational problems that might otherwise go undetected until the field operations reach the problem. Providing operations a visual progression of the mine ensures that critical designs generated by the engineer are understood and effectively communicated to operations. Providing the plan as electronic data to the surveyors and/or on-board GPS systems can ensure successful implementation of the design. This paper discusses using computer technology to generate a virtual mine plan and strategies to consider when communicating a virtual mine plan through electronic and paper formats.

Dust control in longwall coal mining depends primarily on the prevention of dust at the source and secondarily on the suppression of airborne dust. One of the primary methods for the prevention of dust is the wetting of the coal face prior to extraction, which can be achieved with water spray systems installed on the shield supports. The spray droplets must travel across the airway to the longwall face, where high ventilation air speeds can entrain water droplets and prevent them from reaching the face thus minimizing the dust control at the source. Through an evaluation of spray plume characteristics in a wind tunnel, the droplet size and droplet drift behavior was determined. This drift behavior was examined by evaluating the spray plume concentration drop and the droplet size shift near the nozzle exit at varying air speeds. Based on these evaluations, CFD modeling was applied to simulate the spray behavior for varying geometries. These results led to the selection of appropriate spray nozzles capable of carrying water droplets to the face at higher air speeds, resulting in an adequate wetting of the coal face and reduced dust generation.

The Hong Gai coal field in northeast Vietnam has been the main coal mining area of Vietnam for more than 150 years. Anthracite coal is produced from several open pit and underground mines situated close to the UNESCO world natural heritage site Ha Long Bay. The mining-induced environmental impacts such as dust emissions, acid mine drainage, and visual impairments due to waste dumps resulted in severe conflicts of interests regarding future land use and the protection of the world natural heritage site Ha Long Bay. Within the RAME project (Research Association Mining and Environment in Vietnam), Brenk Systemplanung is contributing to an improved environmental and sustainable planning in Vietnam's mining industry and the reduction of environmental impacts on Ha Long Bay by developing suitable and sustainable technology and planning measures (e.g. for dump construction/rehabilitation, predictive modelling, and/or monitoring) for Vietnam's leading coal producer.

There has been a recent revival of interest in concentrated coal/water slurries as a substi¬tute for fuel oil or for coal/oil mixtures, particularly in electric power generation. The idea is not a new one. Coal/water slurries were transported by pipeline in the U.S. in the early nineteen-sixties, and the Black Mesa coal pipeline has been in operation for several years, while in Germany, coal/water slurries were being burnt for power generation in the early nineteen-seventies, as described by Merten and Höner (1972). Since coal is not a pure substance but a carbonaceous mixture, the different chemical and physical behavior of coal/water dispersions from different deposits must be understood in order to optimize the properties of the result¬ing slurry fuels. Since minerals which are minor constituents of coal may also strongly affect slurry properties, coal chemistry may vary considerably even within a single deposit. Thus it is unlikely that there will be a single formula for optimizing the slurry properties of all coals, and even the answer for coal from a single source may change with time.

When deciding to deploy rescue teams underground the decision makers need to be able to determine that there won?t be an explosion whilst the rescue teams are underground. Previously general body concentrations in areas likely to be travelled were compared to explosive limits on a one off basis with no formal process looking at trends or other areas. A new approach is being adopted that takes into account the rate of change of gas concentrations with triggers set to enable a withdrawal of personnel prior to a possible explosion and influences such a barometric pressure changes. This paper explains the rationale behind the changes made and the advantages and implications of adopting such an approach.

"Roof bolting has long been used in underground mines across the world to provide ground support. Modern roof bolts are cheap and easy to install with the use of specialized machines as a part of the production cycle. Lhoist North America’s Crab Orchard Mine is an underground room and pillar limestone mine that uses mechanically anchored roof bolts for ground support. The mine currently employs two different roof bolting patterns: a standard 5 × 5 foot pattern, and a 2.5 × 2.5 foot pattern for use in areas with particularly hazardous roof conditions. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the relative effectiveness of each bolting pattern.A series of numerical models were created using RocScience’s RS2. The models were based on a symmetrical section of the mine at its deepest point, and were modeled using Generalized Hoek-Brown failure criterion along with a discrete fracture network. A series of sensitivity analyses were performed on the models by varying parameters such as joint friction angle, crack persistence, joint randomization, and tensile strength of the limestone. Based on the results of the original models and sensitivity analyses, it appears that the standard bolting pattern provides sufficient roof support capacity under almost all the expected conditions at the mine, since factors of safety below the design value of 1.5 were only found for individual bolts in a few of the worst test cases considered. These results can help improve the Mine’s productivity and reduce operating costs without compromising safety.INTRODUCTION AND CASE STUDY DESCRIPTIONLhoist North America’s Crab Orchard Mine is an underground limestone mine located in Crab Orchard, Tennessee. The mine is located under an 800-foot-high mountain, and outcrops on three sides. The mine is accessed through three separate portals and has two main levels, along with a partially developed third level. Extraction is accomplished by the room and pillar method using 50 × 50 feet pillars and 50 × 50 feet rooms. The mining height is limited to 50 feet to keep the pillar width to height ratio around 1.0. Each heading is excavated in a two-stage process that consists of a 30-foot-tall top heading and a 20-foot-tall bench. A distance of at least 30 feet is maintained between the two levels at all times (Crab Orchard Mine Technical Staff, 2017)."

Of all the industrial clay minerals, attapulgite probably enjoys the widest variety of applications. A review published over three years ago by Haden and Schwint (18) cited some 80 individual uses, a list which continues to grow. In its near half-century of commercial life, attapulgite has received a generous share of research study and patent development effort, both on the part of producers as well as consumers. This work has been divided between understanding the mineral's structure or properties and applying it to specific end-uses. Naturally, information gained from the former has pointed toward opportunities in the latter. References of particular significance are cited throughout the text. Attapulgite's variety of uses derives from the unique three-dimensional structure and needle-shaped particle form of this crystalline hydrated magnesium aluminum silicate. Its inherent colloidal and sorptive properties are well known, and distinguish it from its sister clay minerals. Attapulgite is characterized by its high surface area, porosity, sorptivity, and decolorizing power. Its slips or slurries are viscous and thixotropic, however, unlike bentonite are not flocculated by electrolytes. In Table I are compared the general properties of attapulgite, bentonite, and kaolin. The properties in Table I are documented in greater detail by the wealth of scientific literature which has been published on the composition (14)(15), structure (6)(16), surface (16)(4)(22)(24), adsorption (31)(4)(5)(25), rheology (10-11)(12)(13)(26)(27)(32), plasticity (30) (31), and chemistry (23)(3)(7) of attapulgite. Attapulgite is the principal mineral constituent (70 to 80%) of attapulgite clay as it is commercially produced in the Georgia-Florida area of the United States. As mined, this clay also contains 10 to 1S% montmorillonite, sepiolite, and other clays; 4 to 8% quartz, and 1 to 5% calcite or dolomite.
