Paper written on project work carried out at the University of Pretoria in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the B Tech degree at the Tshwane University of Technology This work tested whether ore particle size affects the carbon-based pre-reduction of titaniferous magnetite. Pre-reduction is performed at a temperature of some 1100°C in a rotary kiln, in the Highveld Steel process. Laboratory isothermal reduction measurements were performed with ore-coal mixtures at this temperature, to test the effect of ore particle size. The results show that size does limit the degree of reduction for particles larger than 15 mm.

"Continuous mining systems containing multiple excavators producing multiple products of raw materials are highly complex, exhibiting strong interdependency between constituents. Furthermore, random variables govern the system, which causes uncertainty in the supply of raw materials: uncertainty in knowledge about the reserve, the quantity demanded by the customers, and the breakdown of equipment. This paper presents a stochastic-based mine process simulator capturing different sources of uncertainties. It aims to quantify the effect of geological uncertainty and its impacts on the ability to deliver contractually defined quantities and qualities of coal, and on the system efficiency in terms of utilization of major equipment. Two different areas of research are combined: geostatistical simulation for capturing geological uncertainty, and stochastic process simulation to predict the performance and reliability of a large continuous mining system.The process of modelling and simulation in this specific production environment is discussed in detail. Problem specification and a new integrated simulation approach are presented. A case study in a large coal mine is used to demonstrate the impacts and evaluate the results in terms of reaching optimal production control decisions to increase average equipment utilization and control coal quality and quantity. "SynopsisThis paper is intended to document recent personal thoughts, opinions, and debate around the South African Code for the Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves (the SAMREC Code) (2009) and its current usage by Competent Persons. Admittedly, some debates are as old as the SAMREC Code itself and have been ‘parked’ as no consensus could be reached by members of the SAMREC Working Group.Some of the more critical issues currently under examination are the definition of Competent Person and the potential registration of Competent Persons, the current re-write of the Code, and the introduction of reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources, and Mineral Reserves on an ‘If not – why not’ basis, noncompliance with the Code and discipline, the role of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange Readers Panel, and the valuation of mineral assets based on scoping studies.IntroductionThis paper is intended as a personal memoir of recent thoughts and debate around the South African Code for the Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves (the SAMREC Code) (2009) (‘the Code’). Admittedly, some debates, such as reporting of Mineral Reserves inclusive or exclusive of the Mineral Resource, are as old as the SAMREC Code itself and have been ‘parked’ as no consensus could be reached by members of the South African Mineral Resource Committee (SAMREC) Working Group. The author, who has been involved with the SAMREC Working Group since 2007, offers observations in his personal capacity as a professional mining engineer with the intent of getting practitioners to contemplate the influence of the Code on the mineral industry. Current practices in the compilation and reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources, and Mineral Reserves are often deficient in adhering to the Code and a conscious effort must be made by the mining sector to improve the standard of public reporting, in particular Competent Person Reports (CPRs) and Public Reports issued by listed mineral exploration and mining companies."

This paper pays tribute to the pioneers in geomechanics, and addresses some of the most pressing issues of our time related to deep mining, and how to mitigate these issues. Solutions developed by our predecessors seem to have reached their limits as mines continue to go deeper. The International Society for Rock Mechanics (ISRM) guidelines for rock mass characterization for excavation design also require re-thinking to reflect current knowledge and experience. Thus, a whole new approach is urgently required to increase mine safety and productivity. The paper will draw on the challenges and experiences in medicine and science that have been overcome through genuine collaboration, advances in technology, and impressive funding, which can be adopted to provide solutions to contemporary geomechanics challenges for increased safety and productivity as mines continue to go deeper.

There has been disappointingly little development in the analysis of rock slopes in open pit mines over the past 30 years. A brief review of literature shows that the application of numerical stress analysis methods to open pit mine slope stability has become only relatively common in recent times, and that there are as yet no standardized approaches. The lack of development in general, and of robust, standardized approaches in particular, is surprising in view of the ?ultra? deep open pit mines that are being developed to depths in excess of 1000 m. In this paper, the results of a substantial programme of two dimensional and axisymmetric analyses of open pit slopes are described. Variations in the following parameters were taken into account in this programme: slope angle, slope height and horizontal to vertical in situ stress ratio. The evaluation of the data has concentrated on the tensile stresses and the extension strains in the slopes. This is believed to be the first publication dealing with strain distributions in slopes. The occurrence of zones of tensile stress was very limited. These zones occur in the crests of slopes, except in the case of low horizontal to vertical stress ratios, in which case the tensile zone is in the floor of the pit. In contrast, very large zones of extension strain can occur, and this finding represents a significant new aspect in slope stability that has not been considered before. The greatest magnitudes of extension strain occur near the toe of the slope, either in the slope itself, or in the floor of the pit. The magnitudes of the strains are considered to be large enough to result in fracturing of intact rock, and the fracture orientations predicted are adverse for slope stability. The large zone in which such extension failure could potentially occur in a 1200 m deep pit is typically more than 100 m horizontally behind the toe and about 400 m up the face from the toe. Fracturing that is extension in nature is common in competent, brittle rocks and often develops with some violence and little or no warning. Such ?strain bursting? produces easily measurable seismicity, events often being audible as well. In the slope situation, the expected physical manifestation of this behaviour would be popping off of rock slabs and plates of rock from slope surfaces and popping up of the pit floor, as well as the formation of new fractures within the rock mass. Such behaviour may cause overall slope failure, or may initiate failure, which may then be driven to overall slope failure by other influencing factors or combinations of factors. In addition to instability resulting from the fracture surfaces themselves, all induced fracture surfaces could interact with natural geological structures to facilitate formation of a significant failure surface. With suitably orientated joints, extension strains are likely to manifest themselves in the opening up of such joints and hence in the loosening of the rock mass in a preferential orientation, with potential effects on groundwater flow patterns.

The presence of dust and fume suspended in the freeboard region is a common feature of the operation of direct current (DC) plasma smelting furnaces. This occurs primarily as a result of the use of fine feed materials together with the open-arc, open-bath operation of such smelters, and is exacerbated by the high velocities and turbulent mixing of the gas in the vicinity of the arc jet. Dust and fume losses into the furnace off-gas system can be significant in some cases and may have economic, operational, and environmental impacts on the process. A computational modelling study is presented in which the concentration of dust material was considered as a continuous field subject to a governing partial differential equation. Settling behaviour was calculated as a function of particle size, local gas/plasma temperature, and other physical properties. Development of the coupling between the concentration field and a magnetohydrodynamic description of the arc is shown, and the resulting models were used to compute various aspects of the behaviour of the concentration field in the arc region for a variety of furnace conditions. Time-averaged as well as transient models of the arc were used to generate the results presented. Qualitative case studies produced several practical suggestions for furnace operation, including increased dust capture by the bath when feed ports are located closer to the electrode, and the possible effects of feed segregation in the furnace freeboard based on dust particle size and density.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B. Tech (Mining Engineering) degree The purpose of this study is to establish whether to mine the Bottom of Pit (BOP)/TOB 4 reserve before the commencement of the Block Cave or whether this should be disregarded and the reserve be extracted at the end of the life of the Cave. The primary goal of this report is to investigate and propose a practical mining method to safely extract the reserve given the set constraints. This report quantifies the additional revenue the TOB 4 will contribute to Finsch?s overall NPV thus enhancing Finsch?s business case and strategically enhancing the SBP. Several underground mining options have been investigated. The proposed mining method includes the installation of a series of extraction tunnels below the TOB 4 reserve from 53 level, with a slot access tunnel system. Ground will be loaded by LHDs from the draw points and tipped into 50-ton dump trucks at a transfer point, from there the ground will be transported to 53 level No. 1groundpass where it will join the existing ground-handling system. Primary development is scheduled to begin October 2002 and last for a period of approximately 7 months until early April 2003.The production is broken into 4 phases. Phase 1 is scheduled to begin mid-April 2003. The final production phase will be completed by November 2005. The production scheduling has been designed in order to remain ahead of the Block 4 undercut in order to ensure stability and safety. Due cognisance was taken of the health and safety of all employees concerned during the design of the mining and ground-handling processes for the Bottom of Pit. As far as is reasonably practicable, the BOP was designed and will be constructed and equipped to provide conditions for the safe operation of machinery and a healthy working environment for people underground. Relevant requirements of the Mine Health and Safety Act regulations pertaining to mining operations have been identified and adhered to during all phases of the design process.

Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, zinc, electrowinning Zincor has been producing zinc since 1969 via the roast-leach-electrowinning process. It is the only primary zinc producer in South Africa, and currently supplies the entire country with zinc. The plant was built by Goldfields of South Africa, on the site of an old gold and uranium mine. Since then, the ownership of the plant has changed a couple of times, and the plant and process have also been improved. Production output has increased from around 80 000 tons per year to more than 110 000 tons per year. This was done mainly through increasing the capacity of the roasters and acid plant. Zincor produces four main grades of zinc: SHG, Zn1, Zn2, and Zn4, in three shapes: a 25 kg ingot and 1 and 2 ton jumbos. In 2005, a pre-alloy furnace was built that enabled the production of jumbos pre-alloyed with aluminium. This has allowed Zincor's customers to improve the efficiency of their continuous galvanizing lines and to lower their production costs.

Our purpose is to record and to explain the widely changing numbers of the huge total of black workers on the gold mines of South Africa over the century from 1896 to 1996. These men were recruited from up to twenty territories, and their contributions are examined. The major areas providing labour over this long period have been Lesotho, the former Transkei within South Africa and Mozambique. From 1989 to 1996, for instance, these three areas accounted for over sixty per cent of the total labour force (tlf). Our principal Figure 1 shows the tlf fluctuating through time to reach a peak of 480 000 in 1988. Irregular falls are also documented with the most serious in 1995 to 180 000. Based on this graph we consider the political, economic, sociological and historical reasons behind these changing employment opportunities. These have included external world-scale events such as war or depression, as well as internal changes of national economy and policy. We show the importance for numbers employed of the discovery of gold in the Orange Free State in 1946, the influence generally of the ?Winds of Change? and the firm maintenance by the State of law and order. Varying gold production costs and profitability against high tax rates, allied with increasing wages and a lack of development capital, have led in the last decade to employment falling by fifty per cent, despite an actually higher value of gold output. Finally, this analysis considers the role of the migrant labour system as it affects, and is affected by, conditions in the gold mining industry, with special reference to its less than humane consequences in the numerically dominant territories of Lesotho and Transkei.

This paper describes the process of scraper winch pull force measurement and shows the results of the actual winch pull force in extreme stall situations as well as during the face and gulley cleaning. It was found that by slowing down the motor and causing it to slip, torque up to 3.5 times higher than the nominal can be developed, resulting in the same increase of winch pull force. On the other hand, measurements of the actual force needed for cleaning of the face and the gully have shown that the currently used winches are too powerful. The extra torque that can be developed by the already too powerful winch motor poses a significant danger and necessitates the implementation of measures that will eliminate this risk.

Total milling cost is composed of energy, liner and grinding media costs. In primary high ball load milling, the grinding media play the biggest role in total milling cost. This cost can be drastically reduced by improving the impact condition inside the mill. The impact condition inside the mill is influenced by shell liner design (as well as feed end and discharge design) and the type of discharge. The improvement of the impact condition will result in a significant decrease in grinding media consumption. The softened impact condition allows for better alloy optimization, resulting in a further reduction in grinding media consumption. Optimized liner design can also improve energy consumption as less energy is wasted in the projection of the grinding media. Magotteaux utilizes tools to simulate and show the grinding media trajectories for shell and end liners. This paper will present some practical examples where the media and energy consumption can be or has been reduced by optimizing liner design. The main objectives of the Mine Mechanisation and Automation program (MMAP) are to enhance health and safety in underground mining operations, facilitate mechanization and automation in narrow-vein and deep mines, provide sound science to regulatory agencies and improve mine profitability. The program, which has a unique underground and surface industrial scale facility, is involved in many multi-partner projects, like hydrogen fuelcell applications, electrification and hydraulification of underground mines, reduction of noise and vibration, miner location device, explosive-free blasting and hoisting. The paper presents an overview of the Mine Mechanisation and Automation Program of Natural Resources Canada and some of the main projects.

Mechanisation of mining operations is not a new concept in the world of mining. Machinery has been developed, manufactured and used for many decades in massive orebodies and coal mines, both locally and abroad. Because of their size and the huge tonnages available, massive ore bodies lend themselves very easily to mechanisation. However, little progress in mechanisation has been made in narrow tabular orebodies in South Africa. The equipment available for narrow tabular orebodies requires excavations of a size that introduce large volumes of waste dilution. Nevertheless, it is essential for South African miners to experiment with mechanisation and to find a solution to the problem. This address looks at current conventional mining methods and compares them to bord-and-pillar type mining methods. Off-reef mechanisation is also touched on. It then looks at different hybridised mining methods that are being used, i.e. a mixture of conventional mining and mechanisation. It finally looks at future prospects for mechanisation in narrow tabular orebodies.

INFACON 74, the first-ever such congress, was held in Johannesburg from 22nd to 26th April, 1974, being organized by the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, the National Institute for Metallurgy, and the Ferro Alloy Producers' Association of South Africa. Titanium can exist in three different oxidation states. Its oxides are numerous and in presence of iron and oxygen, iron-titanium oxide compounds can also form. Some of the oxides are non-stoichiometric, making the determination of the thermodynamic properties of titanium and its oxides in molten steel and in slag difficult. Therefore, for the assessment of titanium activity in molten steel using the electrochemical measurements of oxygen partial pressure, the identification of oxides in equilibrium with titanium is important. This paper reports on an investigation of solid titanium oxide inclusions, which have been identified by combining different methods of analysis on quenched samples. These samples were taken from a Fe-Ti-melt at 1600°C, quenched in cold water then mounted and polished for optical microscopy. The oxide inclusions were analysed using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Both single crystal and polycrystalline diffraction patterns were used to identify the oxides by comparing the d spacings with those in the ICDD X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) database. XRD was used to analyse the oxide particles on the top of slow cooled samples. It was found in the TEM study that the similarity of the diffraction patterns of the various phases meant that unique identification was difficult to achieve in some of the diffraction patterns. However, TiO, Ti2O3, Ti3O5, Ti4O7were identified in quenched samples, while TiO2, FeO.TiO2and iron oxides were seen in slow cooled samples. Heavy mineral deposits are becoming more complex in terms of their compositional variation, particle mineralogy and size distributions, and present challenges for the operation of separation equipment to achieve the required grades and recoveries. Changes in equipment design and concepts potentially provide new opportunities for the beneficiation of heavy mineral sands deposits. The development of a framework for the fundamental understanding of separator performance issues is a first step to develop new machines. This paper will present a first step analysis of electro-static and magnetic separation machines with their application to real separation scenarios.

Ground behaviour in the vicinity of a roadway has been investigated using a physical model and in situ tests during a roof fall. It was discovered that behaviour of the ground is governed by irreversible displacements of adjacent rock clusters. The cluster is a short-living sector of a rock mass that moves as a solid body. For the lack of degree of freedom, the rock mass must be divided into clusters that are forced to move one after another in space and in time. These clusters permanently rearrange and reform during irreversible (inelastic) ground deformation. The crowded clusters have to yield to each other and alter their velocity and direction of movement to accommodate their motion into the excavation. Such behaviour involves uneven and irregular vertical deflection and the movement of adjacent rock blocks in the roof, sides and floor of an opening. Such movement destroys the symmetry of horizontal displacements with respect to the centre line of the opening. A set of indicators that a roof fall is imminent has been identified. Horizontal displacements and dilation must be controlled in order to maintain the stability of an underground opening. Such a state retains the self-supporting effect of the roof and contributes to rock bolts bearing capacity.

Keywords: Magnesium, pyrometallurgy, Mintek Samples of crude magnesium produced by the Mintek Thermal Magnesium Process were refined in two stages. The first stage consisted of co-melting of batches of the crude metal and MgCl2-KCl flux (cleaning), followed by stirring at 30 rpm for 30 minutes and settling of the sludge (mixture of molten salt and solid impurities) from the magnesium melt. The operating temperature was 680?730°C. Most of the contained calcium and significant proportions of iron and silicon were transferred into the sludge phase, which left a metal containing, on average, 950 ppm Si, 470 ppm Fe, and 230 ppm Ca. In the second stage, small-scale refining tests were conducted on cleaned samples from the first stage, as well as on crude magnesium. FeCl3 was used as the refining agent. These tests were carried out at 715?760°C with various amounts of the refining agent. The refined metal was suitable for the production of various magnesium alloys, particularly AZ91D.
