INTRODUCTION Efficient exploration methodologies for base metal deposits have huge benefits for future deep sea mining endeavours, and underwater hyperspectral imaging (UHI) has been variably demonstrated to have applications in the identification and characterisation of mineralisation on the seafloor for both nodules and seafloor massive sulphides (SMS) (Dumke et al., 2018 and 2017 respectively). Due to growing resource requirements (Singer, 2017), SMS deposits are considered to be increasingly significant sources of copper and zinc, as well as silver and gold. This style of mineralisation is currently occurring at active hydrothermal vents (black and white smokers) but now-inactive sites also have the potential to be large mineral deposits. As such, the development of novel methodologies to detect both on-going and extinct mineralisations are of high importance. Geological setting During the MarMine cruise (Ludvigsen et al., 2016), non-mineralised host rock, low grade ore and high grade ore grab samples (Snook et al., 2018) was collected by ROV from the Loki’s Castle deposit (Pedersen et al., 2010), located on the Mohn’s/Knipovich junction on the ultra-slow spreading Arctic Mid-Ocean Ridge (AMOR), at a depth of approximately 2300 m. This material has been characterised as part of the MarMine project (e.g. Snook et al., 2017), and, by imaging compositionally constrained material, the measured hyperspectral responses can be used to generate a library for identification of deposits on the ocean floor. UHI technology Remote sensing with hyperspectral and multispectral technologies has seen wide use in prospecting for ores and hydrocarbons on land (Van der Meer et al., 2012). Iron oxides and sulphides have low blue reflectance and high red reflectance in the visible spectrum. The ratio between these two pairs has been used in exploration for terrestrial deposits of hydrothermal origin (Sabins, 1999). This discrimination typically also includes wavelengths exceeding the visible spectrum (1.5µm – 2.5µm). These wavelengths are typically not utilised underwater because infrared wavelengths and higher are rapidly attenuated in water. However, discrimination based on the full shape of the spectral response in the visible light (350nm – 800nm) may still be possible (Bolin and Moon, 2003). Resolving the endmembers from the spectral responses requires prior knowledge about the optical properties of the materials, i.e. their reflectance. These reflectances can be obtained in a controlled environment, where the spectra of the lamps, wavelength- dependent attenuation in water and scattering of light can be accounted for (Johnsen, 2013).

Recent investigations located at least six major massive sulfide deposits (dimensions measured in tens to hundreds of meters) within a 50-km-long segment of Escanaba Trough, the sediment-covered axial valley of southern Gorda Ridge. The sediment fill is intercalated silt and sand turbidites and hemipelagic mud with a maximum thickness of 500 m. Several volcanic edifices, spaced at approximately 15-km intervals along the ridge axis, penetrate and locally breach the sediment. The largest sulfide deposits form mounds and ridges on the steep flanks of structurally unstable sediment-capped blocks that have been uplifted above the volcanic edifices; both sediment and sulfide deposits are undergoing rapid erosion and redeposition. Although hydrothermal activity appears to be absent at most sulfide fields, 220°C fluids are discharging from the tops of sulfide mounds near 41°00'N lat, 127°31'W long. Recent pillow lavas and sheetflows erupted onto the sediment-covered sea floor less than 500 m away from the active vent field. The massive sulfide deposits have compositional characteristics that differ from deposits formed on sediment-free spreading axes. The Escanaba Trough deposits include Fe- and Cu-rich, Zn- and Pb-poor massive sulfide mounds, polymetal (Zn-Fe-Pb-Cu-As-Ag-Sb-Sn) sulfide vent structures, abundant barite-rich chimneys, crusts, and sinter cones, and thermogenic petroleum in the sulfide and sediment. "Co-rich ferromanganese crust deposits exist on slopes, summits and platforms of seamounts and guyots throughout the global oceans, where deep-sea currents have kept the seafloor structures more or less free of sediment for millions of years. They form by direct precipitation from cold seawater under more or less oxic conditions and consist of thin layers (2 up to 25 cm thick) covering hard substrate rocks in water depths of 800 to 5000m (Halbach and Marbler, 2009; Hein et al., 2000). Besides Mn these crusts contain interesting concentrations of minor elements (Co, Ni, Ti and Cu) and trace elements (Mo, W, Te, Ga, Pt and REEs), thus they represent significant metal deposits and promise potentially valuable additions to the world’s metal resources.The prospects for mining of this marine type of metal deposits largely depend on the grades and the scale of the potential ore resources. However, only a few percent of existing seamounts and guyots have been mapped and sampled in detail, most of them in the Pacific Ocean. Therefore, a model to estimate the geological resources based on the global seamount catalogue of Wessel (2001; revised: Wessel et al., 2009) and the empirical parameters which control the metal composition and distribution was developed."

A concept of plate-tectonic controls for the formation of seafloor massive sulfide (SMS) deposits in back-arc settings was established by Franklin et al. (2005). According to Franklin et al. (2005), a consequence of extension and rifting is subsidence, thinning of the crust, and the rise of hot, athenospheric mantle into the base of the crust. Underplating of the crust by mafic magmas results in low-pressure partial melting of the hydrated crust at a <15-km depth, and the generation of felsic anhydrous melts. The rapid ascent of hot felsic melts, along with mantle-derived mafic melts, results in bimodal volcanism that characterizes rift and volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits (VMS) environments. The rapid and focused advection of the magmatic heat within the rift to the near-surface environment which are required to sustain vigorous long-lived VMS hydrothermal systems. Faults within rift environments may also allow seawater to penetrate into subvolcanic intrusions and mix with magmatically generated metalliferous fluid or allow a direct magmatic contribution from shallow crustal level (3–12 km) magma chambers (Franklin et al., 2005, and references therein). In addition, the caldera-forming processes are favorable for the formation of VMS deposits and the focused high heat flow and cross- stratal structural permeability that is restricted in time and space to caldera development provides an explanation for the clustering of VMS deposits and their restriction to specific time-stratigraphic intervals and structures in the evolution of submarine central volcanic complexes (Franklin et al., 2005, and references therein). The concept is persuasive, although it is based on a series of logically constructed reviews mainly focused on ancient on-land deposits.

Since 1983, Korea Ocean Research and Development Institute (KORDI) have performed surveys on deep-sea mineral deposits in various areas with respects to their occurrences in Pacific ocean including manganese nodules in the C-C area of Northeast Pacific, Co-rich manganese crusts in various seamounts of West Pacific and hydrothermal sulfide deposits in back arc basins of Southwest Pacific. Among the results of these activities of KORDI, remarkable things were the registration as a pioneer investor in 1994 through the Government of Korea and the accomplishment of relinquishment on the allocated area in 2002 according to the relevant regulations. KORDI is faced to handle detailed surveys to select the optimum mining sites in the allocated area of 75,000 km2 and environmental studies to meet the requirements of the regulations or recommendations of the ISA. In respects of future exploration strategies, it is considered that methods and tools of previous exploration activities should be changed to the highly advanced technology. Establishment of an advanced exploration system and actual practice in appropriate areas become one of important tasks of KORDI in exploring deep-sea minerals, particularly manganese nodules. A technical strategy for future detailed surveys in the allocated area is realization of simultaneous and precise data acquisition on bottom information, such as variations of microtopography, nodule distribution, and transparent layer thickness of sediments in relatively small area (10 km x 10 km) representing certain specific regions, by high resolution survey technology. It would be not only a challenge for new exploration system in deep-sea environment, but also a mission for deep seabed mining venture.

"The conceptual basis of the developed model is based on the ideas that evolution of geological-geomorphological structure of the CCZ is controlled by four types of geologic factors: geodynamic, sedimentary, volcano-tectonic and erosion-lithodynamic. In terms of time span two factors (geodynamic and sedimentary) can be considered as permanent and the other two as sporadic.The geodynamic factor is responsible for two interrelated geological processes. One is going under conditions of the axial zones of spreading centers and results in formation of the CCZ basement. Historically this process is considered as a starting point for each of the heterochronous fragments of the CCZ. The second one controls gradual shifting towards the Pacific Plate (Hawaiian direction) and subsidence to greater depths of the neogenic fragments (basement). Thus, those processes control basic topography, geomorphology and the seabed depth within the CCZ.Volcanogenic-hydrothermal activity of the EPR is one of the main sources of the ore components, which finally compose manganese nodules as a result of complicated processes of their dissemination and transportation to the bottom in dissolved and organically bound forms.The role of the other constant factor (sedimentary) is displayed in two ways. Firstly, initial relief is smoothed under the influence of this factor, which, subsequently, makes favorable conditions for manganese nodules formation. Secondly, it favors transportation of the majority of the ore components, participating in manganese nodules formation into zones of active nodules formation."

Mineral exploration problems in the S.W. Pacific are not unique to that region, but a combination of favourable circumstances render it an ideal area to attempt to solve such problems. The land area of the S.W. Pacific island nations is only a fraction of the total sea area they can claim under current International Law. Hence, they have a great need to explore and evaluate their offshore areas. For the past ten years the focus of this work has been CCOP/SOPAC which has individually and jointly with other groups initiated and maintained far reaching marine mineral exploration programmes. In association with CCOP/SOPAC the writer has obtained and analysed approximately 650 sediment samples from the S.W. Pacific region for seventeen elements. Multivariate statistical techniques have been applied to the data set. The aim has been to identify chemically anomalous sediments reflecting either sea floor mineralisation and/or mineralisation on adjacent land areas.

Ferromanganese crust samples collected from Central Pacific sea-mount areas became of special interest after surprisingly high nobel metal contents have been analyzed. Hydrogenetic crust growth is controlled by the conditions of the oceanic water column. Thicker encrustations show two crust generations of different age ranges. The mean values of the chemical composition state that the older generation is richer in P, Ca, Ni, Cu, Zn, and Pt and depleted in Fe, Ti, Co, Al, and Si. The differences apparently indicate a distinct change of the geochemical environment. The Pt concentrations vary up to 1800 ppb and do not clearly correlate to one of the other metals. This might indicate a bond of multiple nature. Several mechanisms have been proposed to explain the Pt concentrations in ferromanganese samples. Our models consider seawater and cosmic spherules as responsible Pt sources. In seawater the main species of dissolved Pt probably exist as the doubly negatively charged tetrachloro-complex. A precipitation of Pt in seawater may take place if the chloro-complex is decomposed by reduction of pt2+ to pt0. On the other hand, the Mn02 precipitation is caused by an oxidation of Mn2+ which is supplied from the oxygen-minimum zone.
