In conjunction with the research study of the Coronation Mine recommended by the National Advisory Committee on Research in the Geo-logical Sciences and coordinated by the Geological Survey of Canada, Canadian Aero Service Limited per-formed a detailed, low-altitude air-borne survey over a block of ground encompassing the .Coronation Mine. The in-phase/out-of-phase air-borne electromagnetic data are com-pared with "horizontal-loop" ground data with reference to: size and nature of conductors detected; criteria in selection of targets for drilling. In-formation provided by Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company on their drilling of the numerous conductors in the area is employed in this comparison. The merits of combining a sensitive airborne magnetometer with an air-borne electromagnetic unit are discussed. The magnetic data are considered very important in assessing conductors as prospects for commercial sulphida deposits in this area of numerous electromagnetic anomalies. The general distribution of metal deposits in the Canadian Cordillera can be related to its tectonic evolution. The Canadian Cordillera is naturally divisible into five longitudinal tectonic belts within which rocks are broadly similar in type, age and history. From west to east they are the Insular, Coast Crystalline, Intermontane, Omineca and Eastern Marginal belts. Seven classes of metal deposits in the Canadian Cordillera are defined and their characteristics described. These classes are skarn, porphyry, massive sulphide, stratiform, magmatic, copper in basic lavas, and vein deposits. Maps showing the distribution of medal and metal-group concentrations serve to illustrate the relations in space and time between mineralization and geologic evolution.

The world’s first copper electrorefinery started production in 1869 at Burry Port in South Wales. Built within the Pembrey Copper Works which had commenced smelting operations in 1849, the new refinery was based on principles described in the British patents issued to J.B. Elkington in 1865 and 1869. Refining principles and practices pioneered there were key to the foundation of modern electro-refining practice in what is now a dominant international industry producing over 16 Mt of electrical grade copper annually. This paper explores the background to this pioneering application of the new, early 19th century, science of “electro-metallurgy” and examines its links to the contemporary decorative electro-plating industry and to the shortcomings of 19th century fire refining. The beginnings and early years of the Pembrey electrorefinery are briefly discussed in relation to the quality, applications and pyrometallurgy of copper at the time. More than a decade would elapse before the birth of the electrical age: the Pembrey refinery may be seen as one of its vital precursors. It all, the year of the first electrolytic copper refinery established for 15 countries is included. These 15 countries now produce more that 70% of world refined copper (for 2018). INTRODUCTION In the 1840s, the new science of ‘electro-metallurgy’, a term coined by Smee in 1841 (Smee, 1841), was being adapted to the decorative electro-deposition of silver in a thin, bright adherent coating that was evidently equal in appearance to traditional silverware (Williams, 1976). Chief among innovative manufacturers of decorative objects who took up the new art of silver electro-plating was the acclaimed firm of G.R. Elkington and Co. of Birmingham, England. The company, which vigorously developed all aspects of electro-metallurgy for the decorative trade, entered the field of ‘electrotyping’, a technique in which the surface features of a mould are copied on an electro-deposited copper layer which, when stripped off, can be used to reproduce an imprint of the mould. In essence, it is a form of casting by electrodeposition, invented in 1837 independently by Jacobi in Russia (Pavlova, 1968) and Spencer in England (Wyatt, 1851).

Reference should be made to the Index.A Brief History of Royalties1In the early days of mining in Canada, the tendency was to sell a claim for cash and to move on, using the stake to look for and stake more prospects. As prospectors became more sophisticated and Canada’s North opened up, the market for properties and the number of mining properties available increased dramatically. Speculation and the practice of consolidating several small properties into one large holding entity became common. In “hot” areas, the speculators2 could far outnumber the prospectors, many of the former having little or no prospecting expertise but lots of market and promotional savvy. However, to consolidate a number of small parcels into one large project can be expensive, and many of the parcel owners became interested in keeping a share in the project, rather than giving up everything. Speculators who were trying to consolidate small parcels wanted to minimize cash payments to parcel holders (usually they did not have much cash and preferred it flowing in their direction rather than away from them). Accordingly, non-cash transactions were developed to meet the aspirations of both owners and speculators."

"IntroductionIN THE COURSE of. a spectrographic investigation of the platinum metal .content of various minerals in sulphide ores, the use of • fire-assay beads dissolved in gold-amalgam ( 1) was found suitable for the quantitative determination of palladium and platinum. Later work on platinum and bismuth-rich beads showed however, that these could not always be readily mixed uniformly in the amalgam. Accordingly another technique was sought which would allow the simultaneous determination of gold, silver, palladium, platinum, rhodium, and bismuth, the last .a common contaminant in fire-assay beads. The method evolved, which consists of dissolving fire-assay •beads in .lead, resembles in several respects the method of Scobie (2) in which silver was used. It has equally good sensitivity arid reproducibility, and allows the determination of silver as well as the other metals mentioned. The 'mutua1 standard' method of calculation (3a) is used to determine actual quantities present. This method has been applied to sulphide and arsenide minerals and •ores• of nickeliferous and non-nickelferous deposits• of both pre-and post Cambrian age, and, following a suggestion by Dr. G. S. Hume and the late Dr. H. V. Ellsworth, Geological Survey of Canada, has also been used for a peculiarly rich platiniferous uranium oxide ore from the Nicholson property, Lake Athakaska, Sask. More recently, the method has been .tested for the determination also of iridium and ruthenium and results indicate it may be applied, as• well to osmium."

The Thompson-Moak Lake nickel belt lies along the root of a Precambrian mountain range of the island-arc or alpine type. This range coin-. cides with the boundary between the Superior and Churchill blocks of the Canadian Precambrian shield. The nickeliferous peridotites and nickel ores occur along a negative gravity strip, which also coincides with strong thrust faulting and the axis of greatest deformation of the mountain range. Similar structures and highly nickeliferous peridotites occur in present-day island arcs. Much of the belt is covered by Paleozoic rocks, but a length of 270 miles may be explored by present-day methods. Nickel deposits have been located along 60 miles of the belt. The length of the favorable structure and the size of the known deposits suggest that this will be one of the world's major nickel regions. The regional gravity anomalies, which consist of a branching negative strip bordered by two positive strips, are best explained by major warps of a crust consisting of a granitic and basaltic layer. "The Red Dog Mine has increased mill throughput for most years since startup. Although flotation equipment has been added over the last 10 years, the Red Dog metallurgical performance has been restricted by a lack of adequate flotation capacity. Two reduced tonnage trials conducted in 1997 as well as numerous SAG relines have consistently indicated the potential to significantly increase both zinc concentrate recovery and grade with additional flotation capacity. Late in 1999, a new circuit was designed with increased flotation capacity while simplifylng the current circuit, providing for three stages of dilution cleaning, and creating a retreat section. The purpose of the retreat section is to target the more complex particles and allow the chemical environment to be fine tuned for improved iron depression. In total, twentyone (21) Outokumpu OK50 mechanical flotation cells and four (4) 3.66m dia. column cells will be added to the current flotation circuit. The VIP (Value Improvement Program) Mill Optimization project is also addressing thickening, water treatment and power issues and has a total budget of $US105 M. Startup of equipment will be phased in to minimize the impact on current operations and is expected to be complete by the end of Q3-2001.INTRODUCTIONRed Dog Operations started production in November 1989. The mine is located above the arctic circle in northwest Alaska. It is linked by an 80 km road to a port-site facility where the concentrate is stored. Concentrate is shipped to markets throughout the world during the one hundred (100) days of open seas. Typical of sedimentary exhalative deposits, the metallurgy proved to be challenging and coupled with many mechanical shortcomings, the initial few years were very difficult. The start-up issues were slowly resolved and in 1998, a major grinding expansion, the PRI (Production Rate Increase) project, was completed. The project was designed to allow a 40% increase over the 1995 throughput. In 2000 mill throughput was 3,050,000 tonnes to produce a total of 960,000 and 140,000 dry tonnes of zinc and lead concentrates respectively, making Red Dog the largest zinc concentrate producer in the world. To address a shortage of flotation capacity remaining from the PRI grinding expansion, a project designated as the VIP (Value Improvement Program) Mill Optimization project was initiated. The mill optimization project is targeted to produce 1,100,000 tonnes of zinc concentrate at 56% zinc grade and 87% zinc recovery. The project will add twenty-one (21) Outokumpu OK50 (50m3) flotation cells, four (4) 3.66mO column cells and address water treatment, thickening and power generation capacities."

Brass, a deliberate alloy of copper and zinc, has been known since before Roman times. There are two main methods of making brass: (1) Cementation or calamine process - crushed zinc ore (calamine, ZnC03 , or calcined calamine, ZnO), is mixed with charcoal and small pieces of metallic copper and heated to about 900°C in a closed crucible, (2) Alloying - metallic copper and zinc are melted together in a reverberatory furnace. According to most modern authorities (e.g. Smith and Forbes 1955), the calamine process was the only one used in western Europe prior to the 18th century. At that time, the alloying technique began to take over, because metallic zinc was successfully produced on a large scale for the first time. Previously, this had been a problem because zinc vapourizes at 906°C or about the same temperature at which it can be reduced from its ore. Thus, some means had to be devised to collect and condense the zinc vapour (Tylecote 1976). Metallic zinc was known, however, earlier than the 18th century A.O. Several early finds have been made, including a rolled sheet of metallic zinc found in excavations at the Athens Agora dating to the 3rd to 2nd century B. C. (Farnsworth et al. 1949). The Chinese were producing zinc by at least the 10th century A. D. and, by the 17th century, Chinese zinc ingots were being imported into Europe by the Dutch East India Company (Needham 1974). Metallic zinc is also mentioned in several European documentary sources from the 16th century (e.g. Paracelsus, Agricola). This study traces the changes in Western brass making methods from Classical to Renaissance times by examining documentary and archaeological evidence.

The Canadian steel industry is now in many ways a mature one, having achieved many technical successes during its hundred-year history. It is interesting to look back over this period, to learn something of the histories of the different producers and of the people and forces that shaped their development. The following article provides a thumbnail sketch of the Canadian steel industry as it exists today. It is intended for the general reader, not for the specialist who will want to consult the several books and theses written on the development of the industry during the last hundred years. The famous Les Forges du Saint-Maurice, an important iron producer for a century and a half, provides a natural historical starting point for a look at the four major players - Dosco, Algoma, Stelco and Dofasco - who have provided most of the hundreds of millions of tonnes of steel, in every form from horseshoes to tinplate, needed in the twentieth century. The smaller companies which have sprung up in the last 20 or 30 years are dealt with briefly - but only because their history is so recent. Not so long ago the mini-mill, based on scrap rather than on the blast furnace, was thought to be specially suited to the economies of the smaller developing countries of the Third World. However, recent history has made it evident that the small plant, specializing in a few basic products (e.g. reinforcing bar) or taking advantage of special circumstances, can successfully compete with the large blast furnace/primary steel producers.

Today few in business would argue with the idea that we are living in a world that is Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, and Ambiguous. Coined VUCA by the US Army War College, these four words define the ?turbulence? and ?continuous white water? that the business literature has been documenting for the last decade. This VUCA world became even more relevant to business in 2007 when the Institute for the Future fellow Bob Johansen published the idea of transforming VUCA into Vision, Understanding, Clarity, and Agility. We call this VUCA Prime (VUCA'), and place an infinity loop (8) between them to show their dynamic interaction. This paper presents an exploration of the impact of VUCA 8 VUCA' on business and the conditions under which these dynamic forces help to successfully navigate change.

PCF?, or Penetrating Cone Fracture, is a propellant-based technique for rock excavation, which has significant potential for the mechanization of narrow-vein mining. The technique is currently being developed for use in the narrow-vein flat-dipping gold and platinum deposits in South Africa in conjunction with major mining companies. The technique is also applicable to steeply dipping vein deposits, such as those found in North America, Australia and elsewhere. The implementation of PCF? in South Africa to date is reviewed and plans for the introduction of PCF? excavation in other areas are highlighted.

From the characteristics of the new (1976) electronic components and units that are being marketed, the author has tried to foresee the types and the performances of the near-future slope-monitoring equipment. Much-improved sensors, instruments and systems for pit use can now be developed - sun-powered telemetry remote stations are feasible, very sensitive as well as precise and drift-free liquid level inclinometers will be available, new techniques for distance measurement with lasers obviate the need for atmospheric corrections and the latest generation of desktop calculators have become easily programmed minicomputers. Thus, it is realistic to assume that fully automatic pit-slope monitoring systems will be operational in the foreseeable future.

High-grade gold-silver mineralization associated with electrum and argentite was discovered in a quartz vein at the Chappelle property, 273 km north of Smithers, B.C., in 1969 following a regional geochemical reconnaissance program in the Cassiar-Omineca Mountains. Subsequent exploration resulted in the discovery of numerous quartz veins with associated precious-metal values in a belt 17 by 3 km in area centrally located within Toodoggone Group volcanic and sedimentary rocks of Lower to Middle Jurassic age and a window of Takla Group volcanic rocks of Upper Triassic age. More detailed investigations, consisting principally of 5677 m of surface drilling in 57 holes and crosscutting, drifting and raising on Chapelle Vein A, has outlined a high-grade gold-silver-bearing shoot with a strike length of 200 m, an average width of about 3 m and extending to an average depth of about 40 m below surface.

Increasingly, gold producers are forced to treat ever more refractory ores. While ores containing pyrite, arsenopyrite and carbonaceous material have been subjected to complete pressure oxidation (PDX) as the standard process for such ores, recent improvements in fluid bed roasting technologies have led to a resurgence of interest in roasting as a viable alternative. The lower capital and operating costs of roaster installations add further impetus to this trend. The Extractive Metallurgy Group at Xstrata Process Support operates four fluid bed reactors of various sizes which have been utilised on a large number of projects to treat highly refractory ores. Preliminary mineralogical modelling of both the physical and chemical aspects of the roasting process and subsequent testing under carefully controlled conditions has allowed clients to obtain gold recoveries approaching or matching those achievable by PDX. The flexibility of the units to operate in various modes- " bubbling bed", circulating bed, two stage, sub-stoichiometric and combinations of these, and the range of sample sizes accommodated, from a few kilograms to a few tons, has enabled XPS to accommodate clients with a wide variety of gold bearing refractory ores from all over the world. This paper outlines the key challenges of fluid bed roasting of refractory gold ores, describes the methodology used to design the testwork program and provides some results from select test campaigns.

In the stretch-bend or bending-under-tension test, a strip is rigidly clamped and restrained at each end and bent by central transverse loading using a radiused punch: The strip deflection at failure has been used as a measure of formability for high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steels by other investigators. In this work, a detailed study is made of strains developing during stretch bending of an 80,000-lbf/ in 2 (552 MPa) yield stress steel using different punch radii. It is shown that toward the end of the process, the bending strains at both the inner and outer surfaces are tensile and suddenly increase at a rapid and approximately equal rate. The strain ratio in the failure region departs significantly from plane strain , even using a large width-to-thickness ratio of about 10. The effective fracture strains appear to be independent of bend ratio (punch radius/thickness) and significantly below the fracture s train in simple tension. Metallographic and tensile data were obtained for the subject material and, for one bend ratio, the effects on stretch-bend parameters of annealing both on this material and a. carbon steel were compared.

"SKSTM oxygen bottom blowing smelting technology was developed by SKS-ENFI at SKS Smelter, Hunan in the 1990s to replace the conventional sintering process and thus to meet the high national EHS standard for lead.Since then, two major milestones have been achieved:1. Since 2002, the SKS oxygen bottom blowing smelting-blast furnace reduction has been in operation at SKS, YGL, Chizhou smelter etc. Now in China, about 50% of the lead (4.2 millions t/year) is produced using SKS process; and2. Since 2008, the blast furnace has been replaced by direct reduction of molten rich lead slag at YGJ smelter, which is more energy-efficient since no slag cooling is required. This two stage process (SKS Oxidation- Direct Reduction) is named as the YGL process.Since 2008, numerous technological innovations have been implemented in the furnace design, process control, and maintenance at YGL. The plant has been successfully demonstrated its unique excellent performances on all aspects from processing capacity, product quality, energy reduction, cost reduction and emission reduction. The purpose of this report is to update all the improvements with proven tracks.Meanwhile, a preliminary comparison on the following aspects between the YGL process and other similar technologies has been discussed:1. Plant design and operating conditions;2. Mass and heat balances, metal (Pb, Ag) recovery;3. Consumables, oxygen gun and refractory lining life;4. Energy consumption and operating costs;5. Sulfur capture and emission reduction etc.It is concluded that the modified SKSTM process is a clean SO2-free emission process. The process is characteristic of other features such as no extra fuel addition, low capital with a small foot-print design, low OPEX, high throughput, easy operation, long refractory lining life and high productivity (95%+ on line time annually). It offers an alternative cost-effective technology for lead smelting industry."

"Tungsten skarn deposits on the Clea property in the Selwyn Mountains, Y. T., are related genetically to a quartz monzonite stock, about 500 metres in diameter at the surface. Lower Paleozoic sedimentary rocks are metamorphosed for a distance of 3 km from the stock. Tungsten-bearing skarn mineralization within the altered sedimentary rocks is of two types: sulphide-rich pods and calc-silicate beds. The most significant scheelite concentration is in calc-silicate beds near or adjacent to the quartz monzonite stock. Discordant K-Ar and Rb-Sr isotopic dates indicate that the stock is probably of early Late Cretaceous age, 94 Ma or slightly older, and that it cooled slowly. High initial 87Srl86Sr ratios and disequilibrium relationships between K-jeldspar phenocrysts and groundmass minerals in the porphyritic phase of the granitic rock , and between different granitic rock specimens, indicate contamination of crystallizing magma by old sialic continental crust which extends westward under the Selwyn Basin.This study is significant to regional tungsten exploration. Granitic rocks associated with tungsten deposits, in this part of the Canadian Cordillera at least, appear to have specific isotope characteristics that indicate they were generated at a specific time and in a particular way.IntroductionThe Clea tungsten skarn property (Fig. I) is owned by Canex Placer Limited, and lies in the Selwyn Mountains (Bostock, 1948) near the eastern margin of the Selwyn Basin (Wheeler and Gabrielse, 1972), Yukon Territory. The property covers a 20-square-mile area centered near latitude 62°47 ' north and longitude 129°52' west, and is accessible by helicopter. An airstrip and the terminus of a summer-use gravel road at MacMillan Pass, Yukon, are about 20 miles to the northnorthwest.This paper deals mainly with the geochronemetry of granitic rocks from a stock associated with tungsten mineralization on the Clea property. We show that these rocks have specific characteristics that not only define the genesis of this stock, but also have significance for regional tungsten exploration around plutons in the Canadian Cordillera."

A brief review of the silver industry is presented to set the stage for the analysis of the distribution of silver production by source from various types of mines in Canada and of the changing relationship between the total output of silver and the total output of base metals. The decline in the average grade of the Canadian mines is also discussed and a trend for the future is proposed. The report then examines in broader aspects the world primary silver production and concludes, in the section on outlook, that the effective supply in primary silver will grow at a rate significantly lower than the growth rate expected for base metals. A cumulative deficit of some 900 million ounces is projected for the period 1975-1980 and a further deficit of some 1,100 million ounces if projected for the 1980-to-1985 period.

The recovery of cyanide from a gold mill solution containing high levels of copper (400 mg/L to 900 mg/L) using the AVR process was evaluated. It was determined that acidification to pH 2 to 3 provides a suitable balance between HCN generation, copper precipitation and acid consumption. A short pilot plant campaign showed that ~75% of the feed WAD cyanide was recovered while the remainder precipitated along with copper upon acidification. The acid consumption averaged 3.5 g H2SO4 per litre of solution. The copper precipitate, consisting mostly of CuCN and CuSCN, was readily separated from the solution by gravity. The volatilization of HCN in countercurrent packed columns averaged 98.7% efficiency. Reabsorption of HCN was practically 100% in NaOH solutions and slightly lower in a lime slurry. Basic volatilizer design parameters applicable to a large-scale operation were determined, including the Henry’s Law constant and the mass transfer coefficient of HCN gas.
