When an aqueous suspension of pyrite and manganese ore reacts with oxygen, manganese is dissolved by the ferrous sulphate and sulphuric acid produced by the oxidation of pyrite. The kinetics of certain steps in the overall reaction were studied. A rate equation for the oxidation of ferrous sulphate by gaseous oxygen was derived for the temperature range from 1000 to 200° C. An exact rate equation for the production of ferrous ion from pyrite could not be established but it was shown that the temperature, oxygen pressure, pyrite surface area, and the reduction of ferric ion by pyrite are important. A rate equation was derived for the reaction of manganese dioxide with ferrous sulphate. A major facfor controlling the rate was whether or not ferric oxide was formed by hydrolysis at the manganese dioxide surface.It was shown that if hydrolysis was prevented the factor cpntrolling the rate of the overall reaction ,was the rate of production of ferrous ion, and little ferrous ion was oxidised by oxygen. When hydrolysis of iron did occur, the overall rate was not a simplefunction of anyone factor and much ferrous ion was wasted by oxidation with oxygen.INTRODUCTIONIn another paper (Cornelius and Woodcock, 1958) the results of the reaction of an aqueous suspension of a manganese ore and pyrite with oxygen are reported. Certain copper ores from the Nchanga Copper Mine in the northern Zambia Copperbelt are refractory with respect to conventional beneficiation techniques. This paper reviews recent study of those ores to determine their mineralogy, textures and nature of copper occurrence. Two suites of refractory ores were selected for study: 1.  samples of stockpiled ores from an open pit, and 2.  drill core samples from copper ores. Both sample suites are from the upper orebody at Nchanga and contain about 0.3 - 1.4 per cent copper as determined by atomic absorption, but they represent separate stratigraphic, mineralogical and beneficiation problems. Ore microscopic examination showed that fine-grained copper sulfides are totally lacking from both suites of refractory ores. Petrographic study found malachite in the refractory ores from the open pit, but that malachite probably is post-mine. The opaque mineralogy of the open pit refractory ores is dominated by goethite that occurs mostly as pseudomorphic grains after pyritohedral pyrite crystals that average 200 - 250 ¦m across. Haematite occurs as bands within or as outer shells of the goethite grains. Additional goethite occurs locally as finer-grained areas of exotic goethite. The opaque minerals in the drill core refractory ores are dominated by euhedral ilmenite crystals about 50 - 175 ¦m long. Anatase is the dominant opaque mineral in some drill core samples where it is largely pseudomorphic after ilmenite crystals. Goethite accompanies malachite in unusual drill core refractory ores that have experienced intense hydrothermal alteration. Thus, ore microscopy and petrography showed that fine-grained chalcopyrite and bornite and pre-mine malachite were not the causes of the refractory nature of the ores studied. Electron microprobe revealed that most of the copper occurred in solid solution within micas. Application of automated SEM techniques has provided a detailed understanding of the distribution of copper in these refractory ores.

Currently in Canada there are 15 major mining companies with a minimum of $1 billion in market capitalization or net private value. This group forms the core of an important sector for Canada. The mining sector had gross revenues of about $35 billion in 1988. This compares to a Canadian GDP of $410 billion in 1988. There are at least three different sub-groups within the mining group, each facing the future with very different prospects for the coming years.

"In this study, physical, chemical and microscopic characteristics of high phosphorus oolitic hematite were studied firstly. Based on which, the new methods of high phosphorus hematite used in the æsolid state reduction by rotary hearth furnace - magnetic separationÆ and iron nugget by rotary hearth furnace direct reduction processes were discussed. The results showed that high temperature, low basicity and high carbon content is conducive for the apatite in iron ore to reduce into molten iron, but not conducive to the removal of phosphorus. Through optimisation of process parameters, dephosphorisation rate of high phosphorus hematite is more than 60 per cent by æsolid state reduction roasting-magnetic separationÆ process while that is up to 80 per cent by iron nugget process. The REGCHEM (Regional Exploration Geochemistry) stream sediment geochemistry database of open file mining company data, managed by GNS Science, was recently made accessible via the internet (http://maps.gns.cri.nz/website/minmap/). REGCHEM provides coverage of selected elements in mineral rich areas of New Zealand. Analysis of REGCHEM data highlights problems with inconsistencies between different surveys in terms of sampling methods, number and types of elements analysed, analytical techniques and detection limits. New, consistent multi-element geochemical surveys with national coverage are required. To test sampling, analytical and data treatment techniques for the new surveys, a pilot stream sediment geochemical survey was carried out in the Thames area, Hauraki Goldfield. Seventy samples were collected in an area of 220 km2 representing about one sample every 3 km2. The samples were analysed for 50 elements, mostly by XRF.   Regional patterns are apparent in the concentrations of some elements. Several elements, such as As, Cd, Cu, K, Pb, Sb, Se, and Zn exhibit anomalous concentrations mainly in the western part of the study area, related to Au-Ag-Zn-Pb-Cu epithermal quartz veins and porphyry Cu occurrences in hydrothermally altered andesitic terrane.   Mercury is anomalous in southern samples, reflecting cinnabar occurrences in the Kauaeranga valley (eg Mangakirikiri), and the occurrence of cinnabar as a late stage mineral in some of the Thames epithermal veins. Ba and U are anomalous in the eastern samples, and these anomalies are probably related to the presence of rhyolitic rocks in the eastern part of the project area.

General recognition of the potential benefits of utilizing advanced technology has focussed public attention on the organisation of tertiary education. This has produced a situation where opportunities exist for significant changes to be implemented. The challenges to Mining education in this environment of change are analysed with respect to the setting of education objectives, the role of centres of education, course structures and student access to courses. The scope of the analysis includes formal courses for professional education and technical training, and programmes for continuing education and postgraduate research. Previous significant advances in mining technology illustrate the importance of encouraging the establishment of an extensive involvement with mining education. Education cannot be the sole responsibility of professional academic organizations; significant industry participation is essential. Methods of achieving this interaction are discussed. Major changes in techniques available for disseminating information provide a significant incentive to assess the relevance of existing course structures and restrictions on student access to courses. Establishment of a less rigidly progressive system of education is discussed with respect to the development of the full potential of computer based learning. This will expand the availability of mining education to include remote locations. The practical feasibility of such changes and recognition of the value of education as a commercial resource could also increase overseas involvement in Australian mining education. Benefits of such changes and problems that may develop if accreditation systems are not also changed to take account of new technology are outlined.

This paper describes the methods of constructing timber barricades against pillars of ore in the South Mine, property of Broken Hill South Limited, Broken Hill, N.S.W., and discusses the behaviour of the various types of barricade alongside trucked sand filling and hydraulic stowed sand filling.Since the introduction of hydraulic stowing, cut and fill and overhand square letting methods have been used in mining the pillars. Such methods could not be used where the pillars had failed badly. The filling used is partially deslimed concentrating millresidue containing among other gangue minerals, calcite and a small amount of pyrrhotite and pyrite.The author is indebted to the mine superintendent of Broken Hill South Limited for permission to publish this paper.OLD METHODS OF CONSTRUCTING BARRICADES.Square Set Stopes.Before filling each stope the outer row of legs was lined inside with 10 in. x 2 in. boards spaced 2 in. apart. It was usual to tie the row of legs and caps together with timber dogs. As the space between the barricade and ground varied from nil to several feet, it was general practice to fill behind the lining boards. No provision was made to retain this sand during subsequent pillar stoping, consequently a run of sand right up the barricade could cause adilution of ore and serIOUS dIstortion of the barricade.

ZINC concentrate, produced at Zeehan by flotation from Read Rosebery ore, is also dried and roasted at the same place for the production of a calcine suitable for use in the electrolytic zinc process at Risdon, Tasmania.DRYINGThe concentrate, dewatered to 12% moisture by an American filter, is fed into a dryer, the type of construction of which is similar to that of a duplex Edwards furnace. The dryer is 45 ft. long and 14 ft. wide, and has two rows of nine rabbles each, the two pairs nearest the firebox being watercooled.The longitudinal distance between rabble-centres is 4 ft. The rabbles are rotated at a speed of 3 r.p.m. by a I5-h.p. motor. Zinc concentrate is introduced by a screw feeder, consisting of two parallel-blade conveyors, revolving in opposite directions at aspeed of 31 r.p.m.Draft is supplied by a Sirocco fan, 15 in. intake, operated at 1340 r.p.m. by a 10-h.p. motor. The dust carried by the exit gases is removed in a wooden scrubbing tower, 3 ft. 6 in. x 4 ft. 6 in. x 27 ft. high, to which the fan delivers, and down which water issprayed.Wood (eucalyptus timber) is used as fuel, the consumption per ton of water evaporated being 0.55 :ton. Zinc concentrate from the dryer passed either to trucks for shipment or to Herreshoff furnaces. The portion for shipment is withdrawn at a point half-way down the furnace, being loaded on to a belt conveyor for transfer to railway trucks. The moisture at this point is 7% to 8%.

The Kalgoorlie Tailings Retreatment Project (or "Kaltails") involves the reclamation and retreatment of approximately 50 million tonnes of gold tailing situated on the Golden Mile at Kalgoorlie, Western Australia. Tailing is reclaimed and retreated at the rate of 42 million tonnes per annum. The project is a Joint Venture between Poseidon Limited and Gold Corporation, with Poseidon being the major participant (90%) and manager of the operation through its wholly owned subsidiary Kaltails Mining Services Pty Ltd. The marginal nature of the tailing retreatment project dictated that a detailed feasibility study be undertaken. Extensive sampling and metallurgical testing of the tailing permitted the development of an optimum economic processing route. A sensitivity analysis undertaken as part of the feasibility study indicated the project to be very sensitive to gold price and unit operating cost variations, and relatively insensitive to capital cost variations.

In this paper a laboratory investigation into the effect of confining stress, water content and gas desorption on coal permeability is presented. Of major significance is the effect of coal permeability on outburst occurrence and methane production, which is influenced by changes in stress. Test results indicated that the shrinkage of the coal matrix associated with desorption is greater than the coal matrix compressibility which will cause a reduction in the effective stress, hence increasing coal permeability.

Longwall mining originated in the early 18th century in the county of Shropshire in England, where it was known as the longway method. Its name implies the extraction of the seam over a long continuous length or wall of exposed coal. Until the late 19608 and early 1970s the use of the longwall system with a few exceptions was confined to the United Kingdom and Europe. It was not until the early 19708 that the highly productive longwall faces we now know, were developed and the application of the longwall system extended to Australia, South Africa, United states of America and other parts of the world. The modern longwall face has three major components, namely: +         the machine to break and load the coal +         the face conveyor; +         and a system of roof support.   This paper reviews the development of longwall mining technology. The parameters directly influencing the production 'of a modern longwall face are considered, as are the possible constraints to the further development of the longwall system.

Advanced Jig Separation of Shredded Plastics The authors have reported that the RETAC jig is very useful in separating relatively low density particles such as plastics, and demonstrated that highly efficient jig separation of plastic components in discarded office machines is possible in pilot-scale tests. To further improve the separation efficiency, a hybrid jig (RETAC jig with air bubbler under the particle bed) which can separate plastics having similar specific gravities using differences in wettability produced by a pretreatment, and a reverse jig (modified RETAC jig for plastics lighter than water) were developed. This paper reviews the separation of shredded plastics using advanced jig separation technology (RETAC, hybrid and reverse jigs). Wettability control of the plastics for the advanced jig separation is also reported.

Three methods of gold analysis are briefly described highlighting some of the problems and advantages of each. The variation of results between samples and splits and due to method of preparation is illustrated. The mean per cent difference of the fire assay values from the means of sample split values for three cases is 15 per cent.Finally, a comparison of the aqua regia leach atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) and fire assay fusion AAS techniques is made.This shows that the mean precision, the ability to obtain the same value, of the methods at 98 per cent confidence is ± 30 per cent and ± 15 per cent respectively. The fire assay fusion AAS method is relatively more accurate than the aqua regia one.

KIeeman (1968) described practice in the Mount Hebbard dump concentrator, Broken Hill, N.S.W. The purpose of this note is to give data on flotation pulp chemistry in the plant for comparison with results of Woodcock and Jones (1970a, 1970b).Ten chemical parameters were measured at ten points in the circuit using the techniques of Woodcock and Jones (1970a, 1970b). Fig. 1 shows a condensed time plot of some continuous measurements in conditioner overflow and rougher feed. Fig. 2 shows average values of selected parameters at the start and end of each of the three rougher flotation stages.DISCUSSIONpH and redox potentiaIsFig. 1 shows that pH and Eh were relatively constant at the start of sulphide lead flotation. There was a fairly steady increase in pH throughout the circuit (Fig. 2), but flotation was always conducted in a slightly acid pulp in spite of the large amount of alkaline reagents added. Eh values became more positive as the pulp progressed through the circuit (Fig. 2) in accord with results elsewhere.

In the north of the Netherlands, in the environment of Harlingen, an industrial waste incinerator was installed in 2011. The population in the region is concerned about adverse health effects related to possible emission of dioxins. This study compares the relative merit and reliability of four sampling approaches aimed at quantifying the possible pollution patterns surrounding the incinerator: short-term versus long-term isokinetic flue gas sampling, spatial sampling of grasses and a novel approach developed by the Toxicowatch Foundation, based on local composite sampling of ten eggs from backyard chickens (local area pollution load averaging by accumulating bio-entities). Based on the latter approach results of a new analytical bioassay, DR CALUX®, from 15 locations near Harlingen harbour show distinct above-threshold dioxin levels in the environs of the incinerator. Currently only short-term flue gas sampling is mandated by the authorities; based hereupon, under normal operating conditions, the incinerator appears to be compliant with emission standards. This short-term sampling scheme is seriously flawed, however, in that it only demands one continuous 12-hour sampling period per annum – an extreme grab sampling transgression in the time domain. In starkest possible contrast, significantly elevated dioxins emissions were measured in flue gas during events of unstable combustion conditions by continuous long-term measurements. The dioxin congener patterns from long-term flue gas sampling show similar patterns as the congeners found in backyard chicken eggs and grass, evidence that elevated dioxins in eggs is due to emissions from the incinerator. These results make it mandatory to perform long-term, continuous measurements for all sources where similar high-temperature combustion/emission processes take place. Backyard chicken eggs are a prevalent regional bio-accumulating sample type in rural and agricultural regions, which is relevant to air pollution emission monitoring. There are interesting relationships between this type of sampling bio-sensors and the special bioassay DR CALUX® features, which, although quite outside traditional contexts, never-the-less all can be well understood in the context of the Theory of Sampling. We venture to unravel the complex interactions between correct and incorrect sampling errors and the extraordinary complicated analytical issues involved in monitoring and source tracking using accumulating bio-sensors. Alluvial platinum was recovered during gold mining operations in Maud Creek, a tributary of the Howard River. Average electron probe analyses give Pt 88.75, Fe 5.27, Ir 0.70, Os 1.06, Pd 0.34, Ru 0.14, Rh 1.29, Cu 1.06. Rare grains of a Pt-Fe-Cu alloy are also present and an unusual feature of all grains is the relatively high rhodium content which finds expression in segregations of rhodium arsenide, cherepanovite. Platinum is found in the Orepuki area of Southland, where it is probably partly derived from the mafic rocks of the Longwood Complex. Rocks of the Rotoroa Complex, similar to those of the Longwood Complex, form bedrock in Maud Creek and are possibly the source of the Howard platinum. Alternatively, it might be derived by glacial transport from the Matakitaki ultramafic block 30 km to the southwest. Origin from the Rotoroa rocks is preferred as, if the Matakitaki rocks are part of the Dun Mountain Ophiolites, they might be expected to contain osmiridium rather than platinum. The ratio Pt:Ir-Os has been widely used to distinguish low Pt:Ir-Os ophiolitic from high Pt:Ir-Os gabbroic assemblages. Mafic complexes such as Longwoods, Darran, Rotoroa, and Riwaka might be expected to show similar high Pt:Ir-Os ratios and be targets for platinum exploration. Detrital platinum examined from the Parapara area, Golden Bay is mainly osmiridium, with rare grains of rutheniridosmine, very similar in composition to that found in concentrates from the Kaniere dredge, West Coast.

Nowadays mining projects are seeking new versions of evaluation that are based on the flexibility in the project. Real option valuation (ROV) is one of the modern evaluation methods that provides a tool to adapt and revise mining projects under uncertainty and future variable movements. Most evaluation approaches simply assume that some variables are fixed, such as production rate, variable cost, fixed cost and lifetime of project. The first section of this paper reviews a comprehensive study of ROV in mining projects. The paper then introduces a new model that solves problems where previous methods lacked. The new method endeavours to find maximum mining project value by adding total cost as a function of production rate into ROV. The second section has been applied to a new model on the Century zinc mine in north-west Queensland, thus illustrating the future overview of that mine. The new version of ROV gave a significant positive value for the Century Mine, when the closure and reopening options where available throughout the life of the mine. Consequently, the new method evaluates real options to add value to mining projects, maximising projectÆs value, estimating cost function, optimising production rates and offers opportunities in projects to amplify gains or to mitigate losses.

TheFiji Islands are remnants of a once continuous Solomon-Vanuatu-Fiji-Tonga volcanic arc (the Vitiaz arc), located at the boundary between the Indian-Australian and Pacific plates. They record a history of: (i)                  arc volcanism the late Eocene to late Miocene, (ii)                an extensive magmatic response to arc rifting (5.5 - 3.0 Ma) during which volcanism was dominated by shoshonitic to tholeiitic basalts, and as rifting continued, (iii)               a transition from arc to intraplate volcanism.   The Hunter Ridge-Hunter Fracture Zone separates the inactive South Fiji Basin from the actively spreading North Fiji Basin, and has been considered to be a transform zone, almost parallel to the motion vector of the Australian plate. However rocks dredged during the 1993 æAlizeÆ cruise, from along the northern part of the Hunter Ridge are typical arc tholeiites, and therefore demand that subduction has occurred beneath the Hunter Ridge sometime during the last ~5 Ma. The Kadavu Island group, south westernmost Fiji, lies at the north-eastern end of the Hunter Ridge-Hunter Fracture Zone, and possibly results from oblique subduction of South Fiji Basin oceanic crust, which may have accompanied the anticlockwise rotation of Fiji during opening of the North Fiji Basin. These islands consist dominantly of 3.4 - 0.5 Ma old medium-high K andesites and dacites, with many traits typical of subduction-related volcanics, ie predominance of intermediate members (55 - 65% SiO2) no Fe enrichment, TiO2<1%, and negative Nb-Ta anomalies. These features contrast strongly with volcanics from elsewhere in Fiji around this time, where volcanic centres produced Om-like intraplate olivine basalts. The Kadavu Islands become gradually younger to the southwest, and show a significant decrease in K2O with time. The north easternmost islands (Astrolabe islands) containing the oldest rocks (~3 Ma) have shoshonitic affinities and are considered to be of similar age and composition to the youngest shoshonites found elsewhere in Fiji.
