DML Resources Limited - Mining Division produced over 50 000 oz of alluvial gold in the 1995 - 1996 year from five operations located in the West Coast and Otago Regions on the South Island of New Zealand. DML Resources Limited - Mining Division have a twenty year history of alluvial gold mining development in New Zealand. Recent expansions have seen the establishment of two operations in Chile whilst exploration continues in Bolivia, Peru and Argentina. The overseas growth is based on a stable production base in New Zealand focussed on the West Coast and Southland/Otago present and future operations. DML Resources consider that the mining potential in the Arahura Valley on the West coast will be fundamental to their New Zealand operations for some time. Collectively the plants operating in this catchment are referred to as the Poutini Project. Recent and late Pleistocene gravels derived from the erosion of the Alpine Schists running parallel to the Alpine Fault located on the Pacific/Australian Plant boundary are thought to be the sources of the alluvial gold in the Arahura and adjacent catchments. These gravels have been extensively mined for the past 130 years yielding some six million ounces over this period. Production from the Poutini Project started in 1989 and stood at approximately 35 000 oz for the 1995 - 1996 year. This production was split among three plants each working different areas of the deposit. Recovery techniques from each of the plants are fundamentally the same. Gravels are fed to a floating treatment plant where, following screening, the gold is recovered using jig plants and knudsen bowls. Overburden to wash stripping ratios vary between zero and seven to one with plants treating between 80 and 250 cubic metres per hour. Restoration of the land following mining is undertaken progressively. All land in the Poutini Project area mined to date has been restored to a standard suitable for dairy farming purposes. The Poutini Project is a cooperative venture between the Maori landowners and DML Resources Ltd. The Arahura River has particular cultural significance to the Maori as it is the source of the much valued greenstone or pounamu a type of jade valued for jewellery and tools. The Poutini Agreement was signed in 1989 setting out the role of each party in the mining of the Arahura and adjacent lands. Current exploration and development should extend the resource to allow mining to continue on the Poutini project for an additional three to five years at current gold prices. Production within new Zealand beyond this point may be compromised by increasing difficulty in gaining access to prospective areas within New Zealand, lowered margins due to high New Zealand dollar exchange rates and the overall lowering of alluvial headgrades throughout the West Coast and Otago/Southland regions. To counter these effects DML has continued to improve on operational efficiency and performance monitoring to optimise the mining practices used. This paper detains the background to the Poutini Project, the geology, plant and equipment used together with descriptions of the current mining methods employed.

Close spatial relationships between the deposits of the Etheridge Goldfield (23 000 kg of bullion) and various regional geological and geophysical features suggest that genesis of the ore deposits was a multi-stage process that started with magmatic and metamorphic stages in the mid-Proterozoic, climaxed with structural and hydrothermal stages in the late Palaeozoic and terminated with an oxidation enrichment stage in the Cainozoic. Acceptance of this hypothesis permits classification of the Georgetown region into areas likely to contain deposits of the Etheridge type and those unlikely to do so. Consequently there is little scope for the discovery of extensions of this field. However, the stratigraphic interval between the source rocks of the Etheridge field and stratigraphically bigger host rocks of the Croydon field may contain disseminated replacement gold deposits of the Carlin type. The potential host (pyritic carbonaceous and locally dolomitic siltstone of the Candlow Formation) is locally faulted and cut by granitoids and the extension of a mineralised, long-standing zone of structural weakness.

The Triassic Ipswich (SE. Queensland) coals are of bituminous rank. The more exact rank of individual samples was determined by measuring the reflectance of the vitrinite. While in general the rank of the coals increases with stratigraphic depth, minor reversals, probably related to igneous intrusions, occur.The Ipswich coals form a coherent group so far as petrographic type is concerned. All are comparatively rich in vitrite and clarite, cutinite being the common maceral of the exinite group. The mineral contents of all the coals are comparatively high, clay and quartz being most abundant. The coals appear to be of essentially autochthonous origin, and to have been formed under conditions of fairly rapid subsidence.While the use of the coals is at present restricted to combustion, most have pronounced coking properties, as would be predicted from their petrographic composition and reflectance. However, the high mineral content of the coals would be a limiting factor in their use for coke-making.INTRODUCTIONDuring the last ten years, the Division of Coal Research, Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization has carried out an extensive investigation of Australian coals, providing a wide range of analyses of most of the important of them. Low-level aeromagnetic data available in digital form have been combined to produce a new 1:100 000 scale map of total force anomalies of the Coromandel region, New Zealand. The map incorporates data from 13 surveys flown between 1977 and 1990 and shows the regional magnetic pattern as well as more detailed localised anomalies. In addition to magnetic anomalies, the map also depicts data to aid interpretation, including small-scale maps of topography, geology, magnetic intensity gradient and apparent magnetisation. The primary magnetic anomalies of the Coromandel region are associated with Late Miocene and Pliocene volcanic rocks, but have been locally modified by intense hydrothermal alteration caused by geothermal activity. Epithermal gold-silver and porphyry copper deposits are associated with zones of hydrothermal alteration. The map of magnetic anomalies can be used as an aid to mineral exploration and the interpretation of the processes that control the distribution of mineral deposits in the region.

Mineral deposits of the central New Guinea region (Gunung Bijih, Ok Tedi, Mount Kare, Porgera, Frieda River) and of southeastern New Guinea (Wau-Edie Creek, Wafi, Hamata, Hidden Valley, Tolukuma, Misima) are associated with hot, forceful intrusions of magma of mantle origin that penetrated thick Precambrian and Palaeozoic continental crust. The interaction of high- temperature melt with continental crust, and the differentiation of melt while in transit through thick crust, may be factors in generating ore. Mineralised intrusives in central New Guinea are a result of Neogene- Quaternary magmatism and were emplaced in a foreland thrust belt environment, a setting similar to the (mineralised) Laramide intrusions of southwestern USA. In both cases, central New Guinea and the Laramide, magmatism is not obviously subduction- related. Mineralised intrusives in south- eastern New Guinea (Wau-Edie Creek, etc.), also, are in a thrust belt setting, and are not obviously subduction-related. The association of. gold in southeastern New Guinea with a second (Pliocene) phase of igneous activity, rather than with earlier (Miocene) activity suggests that re-working by successive intrusions may be a factor in localising ore. This is seen, also, in the Bismarck-Solomon islands region where the richer deposits are associated with later (Pliocene) intrusives rather than with earlier (Eocene-Oligocene) intrusives. Unlike the mainland mineral deposits, those of the Bismarck-Solomon islands are clearly subduction-related.

The pyrite-sphalerite-galena and barite orebodies at the Rosebery mine are concordant with the shale host rock and have been deformed into one system of folds with an associated axial plane cleavage. The folds are tight and overturned with east-dipping axial planes. Folds in the sulphide ore are commonly disharmonic, particularly between adjacent bands of different composition.Concentric style folds occur in the competent bands, e.g. pyrite-rich bands. Similar style folds are predominant in the less competent sphalerite-galena-rich bands and also in the shale of the host rock. The trends and plunges of the fold hinge-lines are variable but axial planes are of reasonably constant orientation throughout the mine area. The folds in the orebodies are of limited axial extent, approximating to conical folds, and are arranged in en echelon patterns. The fold system was possibly formed in one period of folding by heterogeneous strain that may have been caused by the presence of a mass of tectonically mobile sulphide ore. Lineations parallel to the ore/host rock contacts appear to reflect movement between the ore and the host rock during folding.

Two small coral islands in the Pacific Ocean, situated close under the equator, and formerly classed among the Line Islands, have, during the last three or four years risen into prominence owing to the valuable deposits of phosphate of lime discovered on them.The deposits of Ocean and Pleasant Islands are under the control of the Pacific Islands Company (1902) Limited, of London and, Sydney, and the high grade of the phosphate, together with the exceptionally favourable facilities for mining this mineral, of which there are several millions of tons on these islands, give this company advantages which enable them to command the Australian and New Zealand markets, and also to make large contracts with Japan and other countries. Both islands, as far as surface indications are concerned, are entirely constructed of coral, with phosphate on the top from the highest points to the present sea level, there being no sign of volcanic rocks, with the exception of a few pieces of drift pumice on the coast.Banaba (Paanopa according to. the Admiralty charts), also known as Ocean Island, was discovered in 1804. Epithermal deposits (Au or Ag dominant, ± base metals) form within ~1 km of the surface in volcanic belts, both arcs and rifts, with the different tectonic settings reflected in distinctly different characteristics. Within arcs, deposits are typically intrusion centred and commonly associated with hypogene advanced argillic alteration, both in lithocaps and as halos to shallow or proximal portions of some veins; such alteration is coupled with processes that form porphyry Cu-Au deposits at depths of ~1–3 km. Introduction of metals is related to the subsequent phyllic-stage overprint; if this fluid rises to the level of the lithocap or into epithermal veins, Au mineralisation with Cu or Ag may occur, associated with sulfate minerals or muscovite. By contrast, Au-rich (both low Ag:Au ratio and bonanza grade) colloform quartz veins form at shallow depths in volcanic rifts, typically within a few hundred metres of the surface, with clay halos and topped by silica sinter if the palaeosurface is preserved. The geologic variability in volcanic belts, including host rocks, structures and hydraulic gradients, means that many epithermal deposits vary from the end-member features of the principal styles. Effective exploration requires familiarity with end-member styles as well as potential variations, plus the mineralogical indicators of palaeotemperature (eg evidence for erosion depth, fluid flow channels). The design of primary sample cutters for high-capacity conveyors is critical to achieving a correct sample, both in collecting the sample and ensuring smooth sample discharge flow. Modelling usually occurs at the design stage and requires extensive experience to achieve the correct result. However, it is difficult to confirm the effectiveness of the cutter design until after installation. Even with high-speed video, confirmation of complete sample capture is difficult, especially if the material characteristics change over time. Recent investigation using discrete element method (DEM) simulation to model the flow of the ore into the cutter and observe how it interacts with the cutter has revealed some interesting design requirements not observed in the past. Mexican epithermal deposits can be broadly grouped into two types based on their contained metals, distribution, associated igneous rocks and fluid inclusion compositions. Silver-gold deposits (eg Tayoltita) mostly occur in the western part of northernMexico where host rocks consist of Eocene, intermediate composition volcanic and intrusive rocks; fluid inclusion studies indicate that mineralising fluids were <300¦C and dilute (=3 eq. wt. % NaCl). In contrast, silver-lead-zinc deposits (eg Fresnillo) mostly occur in the central part of northern Mexico where they are temporally associated with Oligocene-Miocene volcanic rocks and intrusions of felsic composition, but commonly hosted within underlying Paleozoic-Mesozoic sedimentary rocks; fluid inclusion studies indicate that mineralizing fluids ranged from 200 to 400 ¦C and were saline (=10 eq. wt. % NaCl). The distribution of these two deposit types, crosscutting major crustal sutures, and the close spatial-temporal relationships between mineralisation and magmatism, together suggest that magmatic processes were more important in the formation of mineralising solutions, as a source of both ligands and metals, than the segments of crust hosting deposits.

Critical decisions in iron ore project evaluation and production are based on global and local spatial estimates of primary mineral deposit properties (such as in situ geochemical grades) and geometallurgical responses (such as screened, washed or concentrated product yields and grades), which are derived from limited sample data. These spatial estimates are typically made using classical geostatistical techniques, which fundamentally assume that the attributes of interest behave additively. This assumption is generally appropriate for æprimaryÆ variables but æresponseÆ variables may behave non-additively and therefore their direct linear estimates may be biased.In this paper an existing additivity testing mechanism is used to quantify the bias resulting from direct linear estimation of a non-additive iron ore attribute. Data from a magnetite project are used to determine the circumstances under which such biases may be of material impact. A data science based dilution study was conducted to identify the causes of dilution at South32’s Cannington Mine (Cannington), a large open stoping operation. In terms of industry benchmarks for unplanned dilution, Cannington is already performing very well, and so opportunities for improvement are more difficult to identify. The study is based upon back analysis of nearly 150 case studies from the mines reconciliation database, and has quantified the relative effect and significance levels for the following dilution parameters; time until paste filling, faulting and cable bolt reinforcement. Specifically, significant contributions were associated with faults and stope open duration. Quantifying the effect of faults on stability graph accuracy enabled a site specific adjustment to improve the predictive ability of the Cannington stability graph (unstable stope specificity improved from 63 per cent to 74 per cent). Despite Cannington’s already high levels of stope performance compared to industry benchmarks, data science methods have identified a complex interaction between identified dilution factors (ie stope open duration, presence of faults and cablebolting). Specifically, a third order Factorial ANOVA (Analysis of Variance) provided evidence that stope open duration reduces the effectiveness of cable bolts in faulted ground (average dilution = 2.1 m, p-value = 0.13). These results are consistent with site observations of a relationship between the stope open duration and the extent of failure when unravelling on a fault, even when cables are present.CITATION:Maher, K, Stewart, P C and Robotham, S, 2016. Sulfide-rich scale occurs in steam and water lines at the Ohaaki geothennal field,Taupo Volcanic Zone, New Zealand. Precious metals show very high concentrations around areas ofpressure reduction (Au 15500 ppm, Ag 68800 ppm). Pyrrhotite dominates at the orifice plate due to low PH2s1PH2 conditions. Sulfide mineralogy in the scales is consistent with alteration mineralogy of the reservoir rocks. Separated steam then produces a mainly pyrite/magnetite mineralogy, with lesser chalcopyrite, where textures reflect high flow rates and high levels of supersaturation. This study outlines the effect that pressure and subsequent temperature decreases have on the mineralogy, chemistry and textures of sulfide scales.

Study on Iron Ore Sintering with High Proportion of Specularite Concentrates Specularite iron ores have poor hydrophilicity and ballability as well as bad high-temperature reactivity, which restricts the large-scale application in the sinter and pellet production. In order to make the best use of the specularite concentrates, a novel process of Composite Agglomeration Process (CAP) is applied in this research. By the CAP, the percentage of specularite concentrates in the sinter mixture is increased to no less than 40 per cent as well as the coke breeze dosage is reduced by 0.3 per cent~0.6 per cent. Moreover, all the sintering indexes are obviously improved compared with the traditional sintering process. Researches on the metallurgical performances shows the finished composite agglomerates are high-quality burdens for blast furnaces. This investigation can provide an effective route to utilize the inferior specularite concentrates in the sintering.

There is now a new generation of mobile crushing and screening plant systems available which have been developed based on the motivation of reducing truck haulage. Newly designed mobile crushing and screening plant systems have the advantages of mobility, flexibility, economy and reliable performance, making this system very appealing for small- to medium-sized projects or projects where a number of resources are separated by distance.A brief review of the past history and experience with transportable crushing plants provides an insight into some of the issues with transportable plants in mineral processing. A closer look at a simple model based on exploiting small but high-grade orebodies suggests the concept has merit, however there are many more engineering, logistics, legal, technical and management aspects which have limited the application of such a concept in the resource sector. This paper explores the concept in detail and endeavours to analyse the preferred commodities and scenarios under which the concept could be used and the economic and logistical limitations for iron ore. The paper also looks at the risk assessment criteria to be applied in selecting the type of resource projects where the model could be applied successfully. Other aspects considered in this paper are the project planning requirements, technical and economic feasibility, bankability and operability. The structural variations occurring in pellets of finely divided mixtures of iron ore and coke breeze, metallized by firing at elevated temperatures, have been examined microscopically. For any given pellet composition, time and temperature are the two most important factors in determining the development of the bonding processes.INTRODUCTIONThe success of sintering and pelletizing processes in the agglomeration of fine iron ores for blast furnace use has brought about rapid changes in thinking relative to methods of preparing furnace burdens. Increases in productivity with the use of sinter emphasize the advantages of a stable, uniformly sized furnace feed. Current practice is to produce a self-fluxing sinter containing most of the lime requirements of the furnace incorporated as a stable medium (Figgis and Charker, 1962). The elimination of fine material from the burden allows greater stack permeability and smoother operation.Sintering and pelletizing of iron ores with or without the incorporation of fluxing compounds has conditioned operators to the extent that it is now considered possible that all components of the burden may eventually be beneficiated in one form or another. Investigations are in hand to improve the quality and sizing of coke, which occupies the major part of the burden volume (Callcott, Innes and Brown, 1961; Innes, Gregory and Worner, 1963). Interest is also being revived in methods of pre-reducing iron ores prior to charging to the furnace (Hansen, Melcher and Fine, 1961). The exploitation of primary ores using cave mining caused new challenges at the El Teniente mine that required changes to a number of conventional cave mining practices. For example, in the 1970s and 1980s, panel caving was introduced to manage certain geotechnical and operational conditions. Today, El Teniente mine is facing new challenges associated with deep cave mining and establishing its New Mine Level (NML) project, which is located 240 m below the Esmeralda operating cave.The engineering and development phases for this new project have been largely based on experience and lessons learned throughout the history of primary ore exploitation at El Teniente mine, particularly knowledge about seismicity control, the management of collapses and operational practices. For example, previous experience demonstrated that seismicity could be managed by preconditioning using large-scale hydraulic fracturing (HF). HF has been systematically applied in the column of ore above the undercut planned for the NML project and below the production or extraction level, where the main ventilation and haulage infrastructure are to be located.This paper discusses how this has been achieved and is based on previous experience of preconditioning using HF, which has been applied in the selection and management of exploitation techniques and associated planning strategies and design parameters for the NML project.CITATION:Pardo, C and Rojas, E, 2016. An integrated palynological and sedimentological investigation of four wells from the eastern margin of the Gippsland Basin has resulted in a scheme for classification of palynofacies in this area. Thirteen different palynofacies assemblages are recognised and assigned to particular environments based on the enclosing sediments, which range from alluvial, through coastal barrier to continental shelf environments. Close correlation is observed between the interpreted energy regime of the palynofacies assemblage, and that of the enclosing sediments. Assemblages characterised as reworking surfaces can be correlated with unconformity producing events (ie tectonic activity associated with the opening of the Tasman Sea), and some of the minor eustatic sea level Changes.

Magnetite cenospheres 40-270 I/m in diameter have been found during the combustion of pyrite concentrate.Micrographs of the surface and internal structures are presented together with comment on the mechanism of forrnation.The similarity to cenospheres found during the combustion of pulverized fuel was noted and speculation raised to their contribution to the dust and fume load in flash smelters.
