The Mount Isa property has been in operation since June, 1931; during this period operations have changed from the production and treatment of carbonate ores to the mining, milling, and smelting of sulphide ores. This change involved revision of ore-extraction methods.Stoping methods have been designed to apply to parallel lodes ranging from 10 ft. to over 100 ft. in width and dipping at 50° to 60°. The hardness and strength of the ore and enclosing wall rocks, together with the strength and thickness of the country rock between lodes, have permitted the selection of a sub-level stoping method for mining the sulphide ores.

The clay slime generatea in many sand washing operations is usually very difficult to de-water. Treatment of these slimes is often limited by economic considerations and the properties of the solids to a gravity-driven process. The moisture characteristics of kaolinitic slimes from two different sand washing operations were measured.From these curves, equilibrium moisture contents for sedimentation and for drainage were calculated using the methods of soil physics. The validity of these calculations were confirmed by column experiments.The results show that the increased de-watering to be gained by drainage, as compared with sedimentation, is significant. Furthermore, observed rates of outflow indicate that water can be removed considerably morerapidly when drainage is possible.The practical application of these results to the dewatering of clay slimes is discussed.

This paper describes an apparatus which was developed to study solid-vapour equilibria and presents results which were obtained during a study of the FeCI3-AlCI3-CI2 system. Analysis of the results showsthat fractional desublimation might offer a means of achieving a useful separation of the iron and aluminium chlorides produced by the chlorination of bauxite. The results, presented in the form of isothermal vapour pressure curves covering the range of temperature 160-200°C, support the earlier findings of Semenenko et al (Dokl Akad Nauk SSSR, 154: 42-43 (1964)) that the solid phase contains two terminal solid solutions.The equilibrium constant for the formation of the mixed dimer, FeAICI6, was approximately 4. The latent heat of sublimation of aluminium chloride varied from 18 to 26 kcal/mole AI2CI6 for solid compositionsfrom 0.9 to 0·5 mole fraction FeCls3.

A unique, regional grid of deep (12 - 14 second record length), seismic reflection and refraction data has been recorded by the Australian Bureau of Mineral Resources (BMR) across the offshore Gippsland Basin and parts of the adjacent Bass Basin, in southeastern Australia. These data have been combined with onshore mapping to produce a new model for the development of the Gippsland and adjacent Bass Strait basins. Overall, the Gippsland Basin contains up to 12 - 14 km of sediment in an ESE-trending depocentre bounded on its north and northwestern margins by a detachment ramp, and on its southern side by a relatively linear, listric fault system. The basin, together with the adjacent Bass and Otway Basins, appears to have formed as part of a linked, largely- strike-slip to 'transtensional' system, which started to extend through Bass Strait, probably during the latest Jurassic. Each of the basins developed by movement on a common detachment or detachment complex, which produced headwall extension at their western ends, in the areas now occupied by the Strzelecki Ranges, Otway Ranges - Torquay Sub-basin, and Robe Trough. Adjustments and reactivation from the mid Cretaceous of several postulated microplates in the region, largely in response to Tasman Basin rifting, gave rise to the wrench-related and compressional structures which form the major petroleum targets in the Gippsland Basin. However, the same process formed largely extensional stuctures in the Bass Basin. Our interpretation of the tectonic history of the Gippsland Basin leads us to the conclusion that there may have been several phases of petroleum generation and migration, and that potential petroleum traps appear to exist in the deeper section, in structures sometimes not reflected at the top or near-top Latrobe Group levels.

An examination is made of some of the consequences of a magmatic gas phase developed during a late stage of differentiation of an acidic magma. Elements possessing halides with high partial pressures (Sn, Mo, W) may be removed from the magma by distillation into gas bubbles in the manner suggested by Fenner (1933). The common chalcophile elements are not affected by this mechanism, but form sulphides which may become attached to rising gas bubbles by one of three distinct mechanisms. The gas bubbles may then carry the sulphides upwards and concentrate them in some favourable locus, giving rise to an ore-forming fluid. The process would operate selectively upon different sulphides and is capable of providing an explanation of the paragenetic succession observed in ore deposits as well as other important geological criteria of ore genesis.INTRODUCTIONThere is a widespread belief among contemporary geologists that a large and important class of ore deposits is genetically related in some way·to acidic igneous rocks. This class includes the tin-tungsten-molybdenum-bismuth type of mineralization as well as a variety of sulphide deposits.A basic problem confronting explanation of the genesis of these deposits is the manner in which trace elements which were originally widely dispersed in granitic magmas were segregated therefrom and concentrated into economic mineral deposits.The principles underlying the formation of one group of minerals deposits (pegmatites) related to granitic magmas ate reasonably well understood, largely due to the labours of Goldschmidt and his school. A suite of specimens from the newly developed Black Star copper ore body at Mount Isa was made available for mineragraphic study by the Mount Isa Mines, Ltd. The specimens were selected as representative of the different phases of mineralisation found in the ore body, rather than with a view to furnishing a complete cross-section of it; and the examination has been carried out with a view to ascertaining (1) the nature, extent and association of the arsenic, antimony and possibly bismuth, minerals in the ore, (2) the mode of occurrence of silver in the ore, and (3) whether galena and sphalerite occur in minute forms well below the sIzes readily observed in hand specimens.Analyses of the January to June, 1944, mill head composites show that the proportions of the elements Ag, As, Sb and Bi in the ore are as follows:Ag 0.000013 = 0.35 oz./tonAs 0.024Sb 0:002Bi 0.0005The copper content of the mill heads ranges from 3.5% to 4.75%, the lead content from 0.03% to 0.08,% and the zinc content from 0.09% to 0.23%.MINERAL COMPOSITIONThe specimens range from massive sulphide ore, consisting of areas of chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, and rarely sphalerite, from 1 to 3 cm. across, to fragments of extremely finely banded pyritic shale in which no minerals other than pyrite are visible. The gangue associated with the massive sulphides is chiefly dolomite, and sometimes white quartz. The pyritic shale fragments show evidence of shearing and faulting on a micro-scale, the fractures sometimes being filled with sulphides and vein minerals.The ore minerals found in the polished sections are pyrite, arsenopyrite, marcasite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, valleriite, chalcostibite, galena, dyscrasite, jamesonite, magnetite, gold, graphite and rutile.Pyrite (FeS2)Pyrite occurs chiefly in two forms according to whether deposition took place along the bedding planes or along the intersecting faults and fractures. The techniques of geological control developed by the Coal Geology Sections of the Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited and Australian Iron and Steel Proprietary Limited in providing geological service in the coilieries operated by these associated companies cover the provision of geological control for both planning and production in each of which the significance of geology has in the past been only poorly appreciated by the coal mining industry.While the adoption of similar techniques is well within the capacity of major companies there is considerable scope for the development of government geological services providing specialized assistance of this nature for smaller scale producers.INTRODUCTIONThe coal mining industry in Australia can instance many notable mistakes caused by failure to obtain sufficient geological information or by incorrect interpretation of available geological evidence both before the commencement of mining and during the progress of operations. Substantial development undertaken in, areas with insufficient or inferior coal reserves, difficult mining conditions caused by failure to adjust operations to geological circumstances, and the irregular development of mine workings caused by unexpected geological features, all bear witness to the lack of geological foresight by the industry.Along with the more widespread general use of applied geology, an increasing acceptance has developed during the past ten years of the valuable contribution which can be made by this science to the exploitation of coalfields. In spite of the advances which have been made, there is still a wide scope for further detailed application of geology throughout the coal mining industry in Australia.

The increasing pace of modern mining makes constantly greater demands upon the several contributing departments of rock breaking and transport, and rock-drilling, as the spearhead of attack, has received a great deal of attention with respect to both machines and steels. By a series of mechanical improvements, combined with the application of selected heat-treated alloy steels, the rock-drill has now been developed into a machine capable of rapid drilling and long service under severe working conditions. As a factoryproduct made under strict metallurgical control it is as foolproof as, say, the modern automobile, and, like its prototype, it can be kept in efficient operation by a minor amount of attention during use and by periodical adjustments and replacements.The same cannot be said, unfortunately, of the drills with which the machine is supplied; in conventional mine-shop practice these are made of the best tool steel shaped and heat-treated under the poorest of metallurgical conditions.The crudities of steel-shop practice have, in fact, always prevented the full exploitation of the steels available at any time, and even at the present day the general standard of treatment offers a contrast with the quality of the steels which moves the metallurgist to amusement, despondency or outrage, according to his temperament. Nevertheless, the tendency persists to meet the increasing demands of the rock-drill primarily by the use of still better steels, and secondarily by improvement, of the steel-shop practice. Athird type of development is the introduction of factorymade tools in the form of detachable bits and rods. THE machine from which the following results were obtained makes one of a row of seven at work in the Junction North, Concentration Mill at Broken Hill, New South Wales. It consists essentially of a belt for dressing purposes, which travels round two 12-in drums situated at either end of a wooden frame. This frame is supported on wooden legs, and the whole is affixed to two iron castings, one on either side of the frame. A to-and-fro motion is obtained from an eccentric shaft, which, together with the stationary end of the supporting legs, is carried by the iron castings. A belt drive to the forward drum provides a constant rate of travel to the dressing belt.The top half of the dressing belt is supported on 3-in rollers spaced about 12-in centres along the frame of the vanner. A fairly thick dressing belt is used, and no trouble whatever is experienced from the formation of gutters between the rollers.These belts are 28 ft 4 in long, 4 ft wide, 3-16 in thick, and are made of two-ply 32-oz duck, with a coating of rubber on either side. The surface available for dressing is about 10 ft 6 in x 3 ft 8 in- ie, about 38'5 square feet. Conservation and environmental issues are raising their profile with respect to both demand restraint and electricity supply options. In New Zealand, conservation pressures and energy efficiency need to be seen in relation to the supply system currently in place which has capacity for economic supply of electricity in quantities substantially in excess of the current market. Consequently, energy efficiency and conservation need to be interpreted in relation to the supply system as well as in relation to end use. The relationship between the environment and conservation is strongest when new generation is required. New Zealand's electricity supply system consists of a large proportion of hydro production and this has significant environmental benefits when considered in relation to concerns of global wanning and the greenhouse effect. However, environmental trade-offs in supply options need to take account of both the efficiency of electricity end use, the trade-off between hydro and thermal generation and the inter-regional effects of shifting development options from one region to another. The Electricity Corporation has a high level of consciousness with respect to environmental and conservation issues and this paper demonstrates its own moves to maximise energy efficiency and illustrate the environmental trade-offs for supply.

Troy Resources acquired the Karouni Gold Project in Guyana, South America in 2014 and immediately proceeded to a Pre-Feasibility Study and project implementation. The study considered two open pit mines feeding a conventional carbon in leach (CIL) gold plant with a capacity of 1Mtpa. The study assumed a total of 2.61 million tonnes of ore with an average grade of 3.84 g/t gold with a recovered gold production of 303,526 ounces over a three year mine life.The project development involved drilling metallurgical test holes, securing second-hand major pieces of equipment where suitable, and arranging shipping to Guyana. The remote location meant logistical considerations were paramount. The plant consists of conventional two-stage crushing with single stage ball milling and a gravity circuit. The tailings circuit includes DETOX.The extremely high rainfall presented challenges with water management and the necessity to dispose of clean water to the environment. The DETOX was also mandatory due to the highly sensitive environment and past history in the area. The criticality of this meant that in the design, any cyanide in the tailings would precipitate in a plant shutdown.Lessons were learned and the project has been both profitable and successful for Troy Resources in a new operating location. In addition, the project has created jobs, delivered royalties and brought new skills into an area where previously there was little current mining activity.CITATION:Nilsson, K and Connelly, D, 2015. The importance of reducing the moisture content of fine coal, the nature of the retained water, and the means of its removal are discussed. A statistical technique, using a balanced block design, was used to isolate the significant factors determining water content of a coal filter cake. The most significant factor was particle size distribution. A simplex evolutionary operation (evop) was used to determine the optimal quantities of additives required to produce the lowest moisture content for a selected coal size. For this optimum condition (18·6 Ib H20 per lOO Ib dry coal), additions of 0·045 Ib magnesium ion, 0·0026 lb Separan AP30, and 0·098 Ib Aerosol OT, per lOO Ib dry coal were required. The work illustrated the uses of a statistical evop technique for the determination of optimal conditions in industrial research projects.

Mining education has received almost continuous discussion since its inception and most people engaged in the mining industry and in mining education feel at some time the urge and necessity to express their views. This paper is not a comprehensive survey of past and present practices and accepted principles, but a personal opinion of the form mining education should take at university level. It is expressed because of a dissatisfaction with the existing courses offered to students. It is hoped to provoke discussionand bring forth guidance to those engaged in mining education. After all, students spend four or five years at a university and it is desirable that the graduate should be something more than just those many years older at the end of his course.POST GRADUATE EMPLOYMENTThe first problem confronting the university should, be to discover what the mining industry wants and expects or graduates. This must influence the university course and yet universities have done little to seek this information, and if suggestions have been offered by industry; universities appear to have made little use of them. University mining curricula are basically what they were 50, 100 and even 200 years ago. (See Appendix.) Mt Waruwari, host to the Porgera underground gold mine in the Highlands of Papua New Guinea (PNG), is a prominent ridge of sediments and dioritic intrusives rising approximately 600m above the surrounding valley floor. Consequently, mining occurs in a low stress environment where structural and material considerations are foremost in the design of ground support and reinforcement. Three major rock types are encountered in the underground mine. These are locally referred to as "black sediments" (slightly indurated mudstones and clayey siltstones), "altered sediments" (derived from black sediments by thermal metamorphism), and "intrusives" of dioritic composition. The rocks are moderately to highly fractured, the black sediments being generally weak and occasionally sheared while the altered sediments and intrusives are quite strong but often brittle. Mining takes place from a series of stopes extracted by either slot and mass blast or a modified vertical crater retreat method (VCR), which are backfilled with a cemented rock fill. Ground support and reinforcement has been relatively conserv- ative to date and generally relies on pattern reinforcement of all development with cement grouted "rebar" bolts and mesh, extending to pattern cable bolting with occasional mesh in stope backs. In addition there has been considerable reinforcement of stope hangingwalls in some cases. A programme of broad scale structural mapping, monitoring with extensometers, material property testing, and stress analysis has been devised to allow optimum design of ground support and reinforcement in the future. The Wongawilli system of mining has been in use for over 30 years and has enabled high production rates and acceptable extraction ratios to be achieved in seams less than 4 m in thickness. A modification of the Wongawilli system has been developed to permit the use of a continuous miner and mobile equipment to extract a coal seam 6 m thick. Following physical and mathematical model studies the new mining method is now undergoing field trials at Collinsville, Queensland. Progress of the field trials to date has achieved 99 per cent extraction of the upper slice by remote control operation of the continuous miner and established the feasibility of installing resin grouted wooden dowels in the coal floor to reinforce the coal septum. The method is explained in the text. Monitoring of the goaf gases as an early indication of spontaneous combustion has been incorporated in the mining cycle by placement of tubes in the goaf as the face retreats and continuous analysis of the goaf gases made at the surface by the National Coal Board tube bundle monitoring system.

Effective land-use planning requires accurate knowledge of mineral resource potential. Mineral companies during reconnaissance exploration, feasibility investigations and mine development also use this type of analysis. The Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences is undertaking a two-year project reviewing the resource potential of the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand. Spatial prospectivity models have been developed as part of this resource assessment process, using computer based statistical pattern recognition techniques to delineate areas that are prospective for mineral deposits and to test deposit genesis models. Digital GIS data-sets of mineral occurrence were correlated against geology and exploration information. The distribution of mesotherrnal shear zone gold deposits in the Reefton Goldfield, were examined against geological data-sets from both the regional (QMAP) and local prospect-scale mapping. Weights of evidence analysis generated a correlation matrix that highlights relationships and degrees of association that might otherwise not normally be recognised.   Mesothermal shear zone gold deposits have strong positive spatial correlations with Greenland Group host rocks and areas with moderate to high quartz vein densities; moderate-strong positive correlation with regions <500 m from folds, with regions <600 m from faults and five to eight kilometres from granite contacts; moderate correlations with Ntrending fault and fold segments; and no/weak/poor correlations with fault intersections, fold-fault intersections, bends in regional structures and magnetic and radiometric data. The regional and prospect scale data sets give different results, with the more detailed prospect scale mapping giving generally better correlations. This emphasises the value of detailed geological mapping in the exploration process.   Maps generated by prospectivity modelling consistently highlighted areas of known mineralisation and generate targets where follow-up investigation is warranted. The prospectivity per unit area provides a measurable value that should change as new information comes to hand and, in addition to highlighting targets, can be used to measure the impact of increased exploration expenditure and assess the effectiveness of exploration investment.

The Ngakuru zeolites are located about 20 km south of Rotorua and comprise a number of deposits dispersed along several fault lines. Relatively recent volcanic activity (250,000 years ago) resulted in ash depositions that vary in depth and mineralogy. Subsequent variable thermal alteration intensities generated predominantly clinoptilolite and mordenite zeolites with a range of physical characteristics. Typically the zeolites have low density (650 kg/m3), have high liquid (60% of dry weight) and odour absorption characteristics, and a high affinity for soluble cations (CEC =: 100 meq/100 g). Traditional kitty litter and oil absorbency markets are being expanded. New opportunities in waste and potable water treatment, organic and synthetic slow release fertilisers, use as a light weight aggregate for speciality concretes, and pozzalome activity are currently being researched.

Titanium and Zirconium Industries Pty. Ltd. separates rutile and zircon from heavy mineral concentrate recovered from sand dunes on the east coast of North Stradbroke Island, Queensland. Separation plant feed is delivered to Dunwich, on the west coast, by a seven mile aerial ropeway traversing the island. Mining and concentration is effected by two floating dredge-concentrators now operating on the beach 31; miles from the aerial ropeway terminal. Heavy mineral concentrate is transported hydraulically from the dredges to the ropeway through a 6 in. pipeline. Six pumps in series deliver 24 ton/hr of dry solids in a pulp containing 13 per cent solids. For maximum economy the transfer pumping system is controlled deliberately to cause transportation in the zone of incipient settlement of solids, ieat velocities below the limit deposit velocity for the particular pipe diameter, pulp density, and specific gravity of solids. Automatic density control, based on a combination of power consumption and pipeline pressure, eliminates the danger of plugging the line but periodic flushing is necessary to remove gradual accumulation of solids in the bottom of the pipe. After 15 months operation the pipeline was descaled with hydrochloric acid to remove severe blistering with rust nodules, regrowth of which is now prevented by continuous injection of inhibitors. After transporting 100,000 tons of heavy mineral the average wear on the steel portion of the pipeline was 0·01 in. and indications are that wear on the asbestos cement portion is less.DESCRIPTION OF OPERATIONSGeographyTitanium & Zirconium Industries Pty.
