The aim of this paper is to summarise all known Phanerozoic ooidal ironstone deposits worldwide, including Australian deposits such as the well-known channel iron deposits (CID). Nearly 400 occurrences have been catalogued based on stratigraphy, geographical coordinates, facies, grade, tonnage and iron bearing ore minerals. The description also includes details on the geochemistry, genetic models and main references. Brief statistical analysis provides an overview of the variation between these deposits. This compilation offers a basis for better understanding of the ooidal ironstone deposits and a global evaluation of this important resource worldwide.

Characterisation of hydrothermal gold systems across multiple scales is increasingly important for our understanding of ore deposit genesis and for targeting new mineralisation. Published work on multiscale mineral system exploration focuses either on applying a single technique across scales or on incorporating a series of techniques across a limited scale range. Typically, these studiesÆ spatial scales vary from crustal to deposit-scale and have successfully linked the distribution and shape of major orebodies to fault systems or varying lithostratigraphy. But, is this scale small enough to answer fundamental questions about the relative timing, processes interactions and mechanisms involved in the formation of ore deposits? We illustrate the potential of a deposit to microscale study, using the Plutonic Gold Mine in Western Australia as an example, to better understand hydrothermal gold systems. This paper explores the use of a Process Safety Management (PSM) system to manage risk in the mineral processing and metallurgical refining industries. Important elements of a PSM system are described. International regulations and non-regulatory guidelines covering PSM for high hazard industries are reviewed. Case studies of incidents in the mineral processing and metallurgical refining industries are presented to understand the lessons learned from failure to manage risks using a PSM system. Conclusions are drawn to adopt PSM in the minerals and metals processing industry as a tool for loss prevention and risk management.

Traditional acid and metalliferous drainage (AMD) wastewater treatment focuses on the iron co-precipitation/adsorption process as this is a very effective method of reducing heavy metals, including copper, lead, zinc, arsenic, etc, to parts per billion (ppb) levels in AMD wastewater streams. One of the drawbacks to this method however is the large volume of sludge produced and subsequent disposal costs for the mine site concerned.A proprietary metals treatment system called high density sludge (denoted HDS) which significantly reduces the quantity of waste generated is described in this paper. This process generates a dewatered sludge that contains in the order of 50 to 55 per cent solids. This sludge is denser than conventionally dewatered sludge, which typically contains only 20 to 30 per cent solids. This advanced process has a wide range of applications and can be easily retrofitted into existing AMD treatment systems. It has been successfully installed at several mine sites to treat AMD wastewaters. Quebec Iron Ore (QIO), a subsidiary of Champion Iron Limited (Champion), completed the restart of the Bloom Lake iron ore mine located in the heart of the Labrador Trough region of Northern Quebec, Canada in February 2018. Prior to its restart, the concentrator flow sheet underwent major upgrades which brought the iron recovery to the highest of all Labrador Trough operations. After two profitable years of production, QIO, supported by Soutex, started to look at technologies to improve its current performance and integrate into its expansion project flow sheet. From the lessons learned while optimising Phase 1, the addition of a scavenger-cleaner processing stage was identified as an improvement opportunity to increase recovery, produce a higher-grade product, and further improve the stability of concentrate quality. In 2019, the NI-43101 feasibility study for the Phase 2 expansion, aiming to double the production of high-grade iron ore concentrate, was published. Based on the metallurgical test work, the hydraulic classifier was selected to perform the scavenger-cleaning duty for its well-established performance and known behaviour at the cleaning step in the Phase 1 plant. To validate laboratory results, a pilot scavenger-cleaning hydraulic classifier was installed in Phase 1. Although the hydraulic classifier was selected for the feasibility study, metallurgical test work performed with the REFLUX® classifier showed interesting potential. It was thus decided to also install a pilot RC300 Reflux classifier at the scavenger-cleaning stage in Phase 1. Despite their apparent great similarities, the metallurgical performance was significantly different, and many dozens of sampling campaigns highlighted the different performance of both pieces of equipment considering the feed material particle size. This article presents the pilot plant results in terms of recovery, selectivity and stability for both the Reflux classifier and the hydraulic classifier operated in a scavenger-cleaner stage at the Bloom Lake iron ore concentrator.

Cooling of coal mines in the Bowen Basin, characterised by steep geothermal gradient, is presently achieved mostly through rental surface bulk air cooling in summer months. This paper argues that future mines will be required to focus their cooling resources more intensively to manage a challenging thermal environment where virgin coal temperatures of over 50¦C at a depth of 500 m are expected. Currently, mine cooling systems are employed to maintain the wet bulb temperatures (WBT) to below 27¦C at which point the risks of heat stroke or other heat-related issues are manageable. The capacities of these systems are in the range of 6 MWR to 10 MWR. The relationship between high working temperature environments and injury frequency rates is well established. Therefore, provision of appropriate cooling strategies and understanding their optimum performance and suitability are important to Australian coal mines of the future. This paper evaluates the underground temperature profiles of deep, gassy coal mines with propensity for spontaneous combustion and proposes the long-term cooling pathways to effectively manage thermal hazards. Thermodynamic modelling is performed on a longwall face and includes air leakage effects from goaf streams at various locations along the longwall face. The strategy summarises the application of underground bulk air cooling, chilled water sprays on the shearer and the resulting temperature profiles. Considering the new mining projects planned for the Bowen Basin region, a review of implementable cooling strategies such as mid-gate mobile bulk air coolers (BACs), spot coolers, underground bulk air cooling and the use of chilled water to enhance the positional efficiency of cooling plants, are discussed in this paper. During the 1980s and early 1990s, the South African coal industry experienced a series of methane explosions in which well over 200 coal miners lost their lives. In addition, a fire and an explosion in the gold mining sector claimed a further 240 lives. These tragic incidents resulted in the establishment of a research facility at Kloppersbos dedicated to explosion and fires research and the funding of an extensive research program, and almost certainly influenced the government of the day in its decision to establish, in 1993, the Leon Commission of Enquiry into Mine Health and Safety. The results of this focused research program, the wide-ranging recommendations of the Leon Commission and the determination of the coal mining industry to improve its safety record all combined to result in the past 20 years without a major explosion.This paper lists some of the research outcomes and, through three case studies, illustrates what can be learnt from investigations following explosions. The paper concludes with an evaluation of some of the findings of the Royal Commission on the Pike River coal tragedy. Many of the Commission’s conclusions are pertinent and relevant to the coal mining industry worldwide and their implementation could significantly improve coalmine safety; however, a careful study of the available facts indicates there could well be an alternative explanation of the source of the methane, the location of the ignition and the size of the explosion at the Pike River coalmine.CITATION:Phillips, H R, 2015. The Kempfield deposit is located in the Hill End Trough, one of several intracratonic basins developed during Silurian–Devonian time, in the eastern province of the Lachlan Orogen, Eastern Australia.The deposit contains an oxide resource of 5.8 Mt @ 58 g/t Ag and a sulfide resource of 14.4 Mt @ 45 g/t Ag, 1.7 per cent Zn and 0.6 per cent Pb, classified and reported in compliance with the JORC Code. The deposit has been previously explored by a number of companies, including INCO, Shell, Jones Mining, Golden Cross Resources and recently Argent Minerals Ltd (Argent). Argent is currently completing a definitive feasibility study with a view to mining the deposit.The deposit is hosted at the boundary between the Molong High to the west, comprising Ordovician sediments and volcanic rocks and the Hill End Trough to the east, interpreted as a back-arc basin containing Silurian sediments and siliceous-feldspathic volcanic rocks. The boundary between these two strato tectonic units is an imbricate thrust fault zone known as the Copperhannia Thrust.The Kempfield deposit is hosted in felsic volcanic rocks known as the Kangaloolah Volcanics. These have been in-faulted and folded into the Middle Ordovician meta-sediments of the Coombing Formation of metasediments along the Copperhannia Thrust. The Kangaloolah Volcanics belong to the Late Silurian Mumbil Group, comprising submarine carbonate-shale facies interspersed with extensive felsic volcanic piles, which grade conformably upwards into turbiditic sandstone and siltstone sequences (interpreted to represent a deeper depositional environment). These turbiditic rocks are known as the Campbells Formation, comprising siltstone, sandstone and andesitic tuff. The rocks at Kempfield are metamorphosed to lower greenschist facies, reflected through the different type of schists.Silver, gold, lead, zinc mineralisation is hosted in barite-rich horizons, near the boundary to quartz-phyric tuffaceous rocks in submarine, immature, reworked felsic ash tuffs. Barite appears to be hosted in greatest concentrations by the coarser grained volcanoclastic sandstones and grits, whilst intercalated siltstones are volumetrically minor and tend to return low barite and silver. Mineralisation is hosted in stratiform and probably stratabound barite-rich horizons. A northeast-trending, steeply dipping, metamorphic cleavage (S1) occurs throughout the project area.

A resource model serves two main purposes depending on the stage of a project. The first is to provide an early indication of likely tonnages and grades at certain cut-offs so that decisions can be made on whether continued spending on the project is justified. The second is to provide a basis for mine planning, feasibility studies and reserves. Resource models are not designed for selection of actual blocks in the ground for processing. This is the purpose of a grade control model, which is created at a stage beyond both resources and reserves.Inferred, Indicated and Measured Resources contain different levels of uncertainty with respect to the accuracy of the resulting grade and tonnage curves. These uncertainties arise from three broad areas: quality of information, geological assumptions and estimation technique. This paper focuses on known problems with the ordinary kriging (OK) estimation technique. Resource estimates often produce smoothed block grade distributions with much lower block grade variability than true selective mining unit (SMU) block grade distributions. There are two main factors that are involved in this smoothing. Firstly, where the block size used for estimation is larger than the SMU block size, this will smooth the block grade distribution and move the grade and tonnage curves away from the true SMU block grade and tonnage curves. Secondly, and less well recognised, is that smoothing is inherent in the OK estimator. This also moves the grade and tonnage curves away from the true SMU grade and tonnage curves, even when the estimate is done at the SMU block size. There are a number of techniques, such as simulation, uniform conditioning and degraded search neighbourhoods that can provide a better approximation of the true SMU block grade and tonnage curves at the expense of individual block accuracy.This paper aims to explore the extent to which OK resource estimates designed to maximise individual block accuracy can differ from (an estimate of) the true resource at SMU block size in terms of grade and tonnage curves. The differences at economic cut-offs and above are examined. In some cases these differences are significant. Both the OK estimation technique and block size play a part in the differences observed. To do this we will examine a number of commodities and deposit types using real project data.The conclusion is that the current industry standard default practice of targeting maximum individual block accuracy (conditional unbiasedness) using OK at resource stage, without consideration or evaluation of the extent of associated smoothing at SMU scale, can lead to significant errors in fundamental mine planning decisions. A Kellogg type computer model of the slag fuming process is applied in reverse to derive some thermodynamic properties of components in lead blast furnace slag. At 1200¦C, the average activity coefficients calculated were 3.40 (S.D. 0.50) for ZnO referred to the pure solid; 0.657 (S.D. 0.022) for PbO referred to the pure liquid; for the ratios y 3.175 y (referred to the Feo.9450, Fe304 pure solids) 4.19 (S.D. 1.15), and for yCaS/ 1CaO (referred to the pure solids) 5.10 (S.D. 2.96). Statistical relationships were derived for these activity coefficients and ratios as functions of the composition of slag, which contained in molar percentages 1.9 - 12.6% ZnO, 19.8 - 24.9% Fe0.9450, 0.9 - 1.6% Fe304, 0.002 - 1.9% PbO, 16.1 - 18.6% CaO, 25.9 - 31.0% SiO2, 4.8 - 5.5% MnO, 9.2 - 10.3% A101.5, 1.2 - 1.4% CaS, and 5.1 - 9.6% "Mgo" (the balance).

EnergyAustralia’s Sydney Central Business District (CBD) cable tunnel network will form a loop 6.2 km in length. The 3.2 km long, 3.5 m, diameter city east cable tunnel (CECT) currently in design, will complete the loop in 2014. This paper discusses the ventilation design of the CECT, considering operation for four functions:1. normal (unmanned),2. access (manned),3. purge, and4. emergency fire modes.The dominant design criterion which determines the required ventilation capacity for CECT is the specification of an upper air temperature limits of 35°C (dry bulb) and 24°C (wet bulb) for manned access, during all ambient weather conditions and cable heating loads. Simplistic static heat transfer analyses do not yield a sufficiently accurate calculation of tunnel air temperature and humidity to provide a safe and yet economical design. The primary refinement in the analysis discussed in this paper is associated with modelling of the system’s dynamic behaviour.Our means of analysis is through a thermo-fluid-dynamic simulation of the interactions between the diurnally and seasonally varying loads (cable heat generation, ambient air conditions and groundwater inflow), tunnel airflow and the resulting tunnel air temperature and humidity. These simulations are validated using experimental data from the existing city south and city west cable tunnels.Fire life safety scenarios are also analysed and discussed in association with the ventilation design. Ventilation strategies are developed for dealing with such emergency fire situations.The understanding and insight provided by the work offers the ability to optimise ventilation plant provisions in future cable tunnels, particularly long and high energy density tunnels.

Silicon-based photovoltaic cells are currently the most dominant types applied to convert solar energy to electricity. In solar-grade silicon (SG-Si), the control of boron (B) and phosphorus (P) is very critical. Generally, these elements are difficult to remove into acceptable sub-ppm levels from lower grade Si. This study investigates slag treatment as a process for Si refining, focusing on the behaviour of P and B. The experiments were conducted by equilibrating Si-B-P alloys with 43 wt per cent SiO2 – 47 wt per cent CaO – 10 wt per cent Al2O3 slag under inert atmosphere at 1500°C. Different crucible materials were used (Al2O3, SiO2 and MgO), which determined the primary saturation phase for the system and modified the final slag composition accordingly. The samples were equilibrated and analysed with microanalysis techniques (EPMA (electron probe microanalysis) and LA-ICP-MS (laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry)). New standards were prepared and applied in the LA-ICP-MS analyses. Experimental results show that silver is essentially fully dissolved in silicon, as well as most phosphorus with LP ( = wt per cent P in slag/wt per cent P in Si) between 0.1–0.3. The distribution coefficient of boron was measured to be between 1 and 2. The crucible material used had an influence on the phase compositions and slight influence on the distribution coefficients of boron and phosphorus. The experimental results provided new accurate data when considering applicability of slag treatment as a technique for Si refining and Si PV cell recycling.

"A continuous improvement initiative was identified at Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mine’s (KCGM) Fimiston open pit with the goal of reducing bench turnover time and increasing shovel digability by improving fragmentation around previously mined-out stopes. In the past, a higher number of blasts than normal would be required to get through a single excavation area where stopes were present. This is due to the limited reach capability of the drilling fleet from safe ground into restricted areas requiring the drilling of the shot to be done in a staged manner. In addition, the holes that were able to be drilled in the area did not remain open long enough to be loaded with explosives as a result of the poor ground conditions surrounding the stopes.Over the last 18 months, KCGM has trialled drill additives to improve blasthole stability, as well as introducing a remote drill rig allowing holes to be drilled in areas previously inaccessible by manned drill rigs. This has resulted in improved penetration rates in bad ground conditions, improved drill hole stability, better shovel digability, and an overall reduction in bench turnover of at least ten days on the benchmarked 126 days average per bench. KCGM is now in the final stages of the improvement project with the installation of a drill monitoring system on the fleet to allow live data transfer back to the office for analysis, as well as providing improved accuracy on drill holes in restricted areas.Citation:Michaud, C and Kavanagh, D, 2016. This paper discusses the operating model within Endeavour Mining Corporation regarding the options of owner mining against contract mining. It’s based on the concept of ‘are we carrying out the most efficient mining’ regarding cost and performance. This question can only be answered through an extensive contract mining tender process and conducting a comprehensive comparison to evaluate the transition viability. Karma mine, located in Burkina Faso, is the subject of this paper. The Tender model included sales of equipment, parts and tooling associated with the traditional Load and Haul Schedule of Rates (SOR). The methodology focused on the structure of the tender process, which consists in the development of a SOR based on haulage profiles and mining schedule. This is a new Endeavour framework that allowed the bidders to compete on an even level. This was performed using a systemic analysis which encompassed all the elements involved in a transition such as the Human Resources (HR), taxes and customs implications, directs and non-direct costs (Finance and interest on assets, depreciation, insurance), contractor risk profiling. It was assessed against the normalised internal pricing tender-based. This paper gives an insight into how a West African mining operation addressed the sensitivities of the HR functions against the commercial aspects. This was one of the most successful transitions in West Africa and was carried out during the COVID crisis. The outcome of this project has created value by detailing a lesson learned model for both commercial and HR aspects. This discusses the commercial comparisons along with the internal model with the underlying HR functions as a risk factor that could have jeopardised the continuation of the operation. This resulted in a smooth transition with the additional cash flow generated by the sale of the parts and equipment turned Karma into a viable operation.

Dimension stone is the term generally given to rock used in building construction. During early European history in Otago, locally available dimension stone products were easily obtained. Crude rock shelters built on river banks with schist rock within Central Otago soon gave way to more established and sophisticated permanent homesteads constructed with the same materials. Victorian architectural achievement is celebrated in Otago with many fine bluestone block buildings. When the University Council decided to build substantially in stone, it narrowly escaped disaster. It was well known at the time that brick in Dunedin was of an inferior quality and that it soon wasted. Rev Dr Stuart said before the 1879 Commission that æthe Council had some old-world notions and liked to have the University with some architectural styleÆ. Contemporary utilisation of dimension stone is generally restricted by expense to a simple veneer. Stone products produced from Otago quarries have found ready markets in other areas in New Zealand , particularly prior to the share market crash in 1987.

About 17% of the world's present day oil supplies comes from wells drilled in the continental shelf of some 28 countries. The demand for oil is increasing each year and is expected to quintuple in the next decade. In the same period, the demand for gas will climb to at least 20 times its present rate. In the next decade, the percentage of oil and gas obtained from offshore is expected to rise to nearly half the world's consumption. The offshore oil industry is currently striving to achieve new technological advances in the field of deep ocean operations, especially in face of adverse seas. While the emphasis was put on drilling vessels for exploration, the industry was slow in developing effective offshore construction vessels. Until a year ago, construction vessels were but large barges with construction equipment mounted on their decks. These vessels all shared the same severe limitation: When the sea exceeds a five-foot wave height (and in some cases as little as three feet) the conventional construction barge is forced to suspend operations. In face of an oncoming storm they must run for shelter. Their utilization, therefore, is limited and in rough weather areas, such as the North Sea or the Bass Strait is lower than 50%.

Cliffs Natural Resources Pty Ltd (CNR) operates iron ore mines in the Koolyanobbing region of Western Australia. Ore is mined from three locations, separated by many kilometres. The ore is stockpiled at these locations, according to an in-house ore classification system (based on grade and source) and then trucked to the crushing and screening plant at Koolyanobbing. Lump and fines products are railed to Esperance for ship loading and export to Asian customers. CNR prides itself on the relatively low inter-shipment grade variability of the products. The Koolyanobbing crusher is fed using a daily blend plan, generated to maintain lump and fines product grades within acceptable tolerance ranges around targets. Achieving low variability requires predicting lump and fines grades as accurately as practical from the estimated head grades of the ROM ores potentially going into the blend. The grade prediction model may be either a direct prediction of crushed lump and fines grades and lump percentage, or be split into two stages: the bias between blasthole estimated head grade and crusher head grade and then the lump-fines algorithm for splitting the head grade between lump and fines products. The lump-fines algorithm comprises the percentage of lump and the difference between the lump and fines grades. We describe a weighted least squares (WLS) regression model for predicting crusher grades and lump proportion from the estimated head grade for Fe, P, SiO2, Al2O3, Mn and S. The method is applied to CNR production data, where the regression model explains approximately 60 per cent of the variance in the crushed ore grade, for both lump and fines. A further small but significant improvement in prediction can be achieved by including the ore classification data in the model. The regression errors exhibit strong positive serial correlation, indicating trends in grade error across multiple blend records. To compensate for the longer-term error, an exponentially smoothed model was developed and applied to the daily grade blend errors. This gave an increase in the longer-term variance explained and therefore an improvement in grade prediction.

Recent decades have seen significant advancements in analytical and experimental techniques, thermodynamic theory, and computational capabilities in high temperature research which are particularly timely to address the challenges of increasingly complex and variable feedstocks in both primary and secondary pyrometallurgical processes, the need to optimise and improve them. Currently a research program is in progress on the development of the 20-component multi-phase thermodynamic database for pyrometallurgical smelting, refining and recycling systems describing thermodynamics and phase equilibria of molten slag, matte, speiss, salts, alloys and associated solids. The integrated experimental and modelling program has been supported for nearly two decades by several consortia of 14 major international companies with over 30 operations around the world, integrates many components, incorporates many in-house developments, and brings together many different groups of professionals of different levels from junior and mid-career to senior from both industry and university sectors. The aims of the paper are:  to outline the many components and issues of the overall program including analytical, experimental and thermodynamic modelling research as well as implementation of the results in industrial practice, professional education, planning and organisation issues.  to highlight the opportunities, challenges, and possible solutions.  to present these to all different groups of professionals involved in the current program.  and thus, importantly, to facilitate possible future further developments and collaborations in the field of phase equilibria and thermodynamics of complex high-temperature systems.

The Buttle Lake camp is in central Vancouver Island, southwestern British Columbia, Canada. The camp hosts world-class polymetallic volcanogenic deposits of Devonian, Frasnian age (370Ma). This paper describes an on-going sulphur and lead isotope study of the major orebodies.Sulphur isotopes were determined for sulphides (pyrite, chalcopyrite, bornite and galena) and sulphate (barite). Sulphide analyses are markedly different from sulfate. The differences are explained below in a unique model.Sulphide isotopic compositions cluster tightly (del34S -6.7 to 4.6), and demonstrate isotope reversals. Calculated temperatures of correctly ordered mineral pairs are unrealistically high. We conclude that the sulphides are in isotopic disequilibrium, presumably because of rapid precipitation from a quenched plume in an anoxic environment, and because of subsequent sulphide replacement.
