MOST important of the naturalcalcium silicates is the meta¬silicate, CaSi03, known as wollastonite, after W. H. Wollaston. A large deposit of this mineral was dis¬covered some seven years ago near Code Siding, Rademacher mining dis¬trict, Kern County, Calif., the deposit being some 7500 ft. long and of an average width of 300 ft. It consists of a series of small domes striking north¬erly and southerly and with a dip of 81 ° to the south. This deposit was opened up by a series of small quarries showing a potential tonnage of 12,000,¬000 tons, allowing of cheap mining and transportation, the Southern Pa¬cific R.R. spur track being one mile north of the workings. Numerous sam¬ples taken from different points on the deposit, tested by Mr. Brinker, of the California Testing Laboratories, Los Angeles, showed an average as fol¬lows: Per Cent Silica (SiO2) 47.12 Lime (CaO) 41.72 Magnesia (MgO) 2.72 Alkalies (R,0) Trace Iron (Fe.,O,) 1.60 whereas the theoretical composition of of wollastonite, as given by William Shirley Bayley, is as follows: Silica 51.75 Lime 45.25 The tonnage and purity of this de¬posit led to investigations into its com¬mercial development. Early work es¬tablished the fact that wollastonite was ideal for the manufacture of a tough, almost unbreakable, glass similar to Pyrex. It also established the fact that wollastonite was particularly adapted for use in the manufacture of mineral wool, towards which further research was then directed. Briefly, the prin¬cipal advantages were the substantially unvarying chemical composition of the naturally occurring mineral and its characteristic of being relatively flexi¬ble and highly resilient when fused into a glass. A mineral wool produced therefrom is thus not only of highly uniform composition and color but is most desirable because of the high mechanical strength and length of the individual fibers constituting the wool. It is well known that mineral wool may be prepared by melting a suitable charge of raw material and then intro¬ducing a stream of a suitable fluid, such as air or steam, into a stream of the molten raw material. By this means the molten material is blown into threads or fibers, which are collected in a suitable chamber similar to a tun¬nel, from which they are removed from time to time or continuously. The following advertisements show the contemporary view of the value of coal on a tract, usually as compared with farming advantages of several kinds. Fayette Gazette and Union Advertiser, February 10, 1798: "For Sale in Washington twp., Fayette Co., 211 acres of land whereon is a good new grist merchant mill, a good stone dam, and a house for the miller, about two acres of bottom, cleared and fenced, an excellent coal bank and saw-mill seat unimproved." Pittsburgh Gazette, March 19 and 26, 1802: Ads. offering for sale two properties, one of 38 acres, "together with a Coal Pitt and Lime Quarry, lying on the Monongahela side of Grant's Hill, and within one mile and a half of Pittsburgh," and the other two tracts of 700 acres on "Racoon creek, contiguous to which is a valuable limestone quarry, and a quarry of building stone, also plenty of stone coal." Pittsburgh Gazette, Oct. 8, 1802: A farm between Pittsburgh and Greensburg "with house, barn and a Smith shop-also, a fine sugar camp, and a Coal Bank within sight of the house," was offered for sale. The Farmers Register, Greensburg, Pa., March 13, 1802: An advertisement of a "plantation, six miles from Greensburg, there are two coal banks on it, one at each end of the place." The Commonwealth, Pittsburgh, Aug. 4,1805: A number of lots were laid off on Saw Mill Run, nearly opposite the first opening made on the Pittsburgh seam. They were from two to twenty acres each "and a great quantity of Limestone and stone coal." Pittsburgh Gazette, Aug. 9, Sept. 6, Sept. 27, Oct. 4, 1811; The Commonwealth, Aug. 19, 1811: Five tracts were advertised that contained coal. One had "fine springs and an inexhaustible mine of coal;" one, "excellent sugar camps, coal banks and limestone and a good mill seat;" one, "good sugar camps, an excellent coal bank and an elegant seat for a distillery;" another, a tract of 45,000 acres in Allegheny and Butler Counties affording "stone coal and iron ore, and seats for water works;" and the last a tract on Beck's Run, four miles from Pittsburgh "and a coal pit opened about one fourth of a mile from the river." The Mercury, Pittsburgh, April 8, Jan. 14, Feb. 11, 1813; Pittsburgh Gazette, April 16, Dec. 3, 1813: These tracts were advertised during the year in the vicinity of the city. One had "a good sugar camp, woodland and plenty of coal;" another, "a sugar camp and a coal bank on the premises;" while the others were "well timbered or well watered and had excellent stone coal." The Mercury, Pittsburgh, Feb. 2, 1814: A farm was offered for sale on the headwaters of Robinson's Run, in Washington County, four miles from Burgettstown, containing 60 acres, "a young bearing orchard,... a coal bank and a good sugar camp." Genius of Liberty and Fayette Advertiser, Uniontown, Pa., March 2, 1814, carried an advertisement of a sale of lots in the new town of Perriopolis; "the quantity and quality of the clay, sand and salt licks, near the premises, together with the timber and abundance of .stone coals The town of Perriopolis was situated upon a . farm at one time belonging to Washington.

PART I SUMMARY CERTAIN relations between the formation of ore deposits and other geological processes are pretty generally accepted, namely: that many ore deposits are closely associated with igneous activity; that ore deposits accompany certain types of intrusive bodies, notably batholiths and stocks, and that they are concentrated near the tops of such bodies; that igneous activity occurs in belts of strong folding and faulting; that folding and faulting are greatest in basins of extensive sedimentation and least in areas of erosion or slight sedimentation; that areas of erosion or slight sedimentation and of heavy sedimentation persist over long periods and exert a major control over structure, igneous activity, and ore deposition; that cycles of erosion, deposition, folding and faulting, igneous activity, and ore deposition, have been repeated through geologic time resulting in rather definite periods in which metal deposits have formed. In short, ore deposition is but one phase of a series of closely related geological events. It is attempted in this chapter to point out the relations of these interreacting geologic processes to the distribution of ore deposits in the western United States. Three great periods of mineralization are recognized; pre-Cambrian, post-Jurassic, and late Cretaceous-Tertiary. In distribution the deposits of the three periods, with certain exceptions, show a concentration about two large positive areas, the Colorado plateau and the Columbia plateau, which suggests a causal relation. The most general age divisions of the rocks of the Cordilleran region of the United States are (1) pre-Cambrian, and (2) Cambrian and later rocks. The pre-Cambrian rocks are exposed mainly through the Rocky Mountain belt from the Canadian boundary southward to Arizona and westward through Arizona to southern California. They have commonly

ADOLPH GREINER, Seraing, Belgium :-I have nothing special to add to Professor Hubert's paper except to say that there are some little things that it would be well to have cor-rected when the paper comes to be published. In dealing with the thermal efficiency of the engine, you will find that the 29.84 per cent was a very high one. Professor Hubert has forgotten those engines built under the Cockerill type, but he has referred to them in Appendix II. At our works at Cockerill we have built 63 engines, giving 63,000 h.p., and the other companies who have received licenses have built 113 engines, making 103,000 h.p., and aggregating 176 engines and 166,000 h.p. Eight years ago I had the pleasure of giving to the Institute the results obtained up to that time. Since then a good many engines have been constructed. In 1898 I thought a blast-furnace producing 100 tons of pig iron would allow 3,000 h.p. Professor Witz and Professor Hubert show that with the same production of pig the new engines take 3,800 h.p. out of the gas. At present at Cockerill we make 700 to 800 tons of pig iron per day, and we hope to have 26,000 h.p; in a few years. At present we have only half of that in gas-engines, but we hope to have in five or six years all the gas out of these furnaces to the number of 25,000 or 26,000 h.p. MR. Substantial deposits of Bessemer hematite have been found recently by drilling beneath Steep Rock Lake, Ontario, which is situated in the northern part of the Lake Superior Region. It will be practicable to divert the waters flowing into this lake and develop open pits on the upper pert of two large ore bodies by damming off and pumping out the water in the part of the lake in which they occur. Ultimately, the bulk of the ore will be mined by underground methods. Owing to the generally massive nature of the rocks in the area, no underground flows of major consequence are anticipated after diversion of the lake. The Steep Rock deposits are attributed in origin to hydrothermal replacement. They were formed, for the most part, along an unconform-able, brecciated contact between the Steep Rock limestone and an overlying younger volcanic series, The replacing solutions came in as igneous after-effects, following upon the intrusion of basic igneous rocks that invaded the hanging-wall volcanics. It is believed that this took place in a geological period roughly equivalent to late Middle Huronian, which was the period when the most extensive iron-bearing rocks of the Lake Superior Region were formed. Comparison is made with other deep-seated iron-ore bodies in the Lake Superior Region, the origins of which are ascribed in the discussion to hydrothermal replacement. Introduction Under the waters of Steep Rock Lake, Ontario, situated on the Canadian National Railway, 142 miles west of Port Arthur, the presence of three ore zones containing red and brown Bessemer hematite has been established. These were discovered and have been partly explored by means of diamond and churn drilling, The positions of the ore zones, designated as A, B and C, are shown on the accompanying maps and cross sections. This exploratory work, begun in 1938 by Joseph Errington* and Julian G. Cross, has been carried on by Steep Rock Iron Mines Ltd., and was continued during the winter of 1941-1942. For more than 60 years explorers have known that large quantities of hard hema. tite float of good grade existed along the south shore of Steep Rock Lake, and the presence of ore beneath the lake was inferred by many early geologists and explorers. Despite numerous previous attempts to find ore in place, actual discovery awaited the recent period of intensive exploratory effort in Canada. The results obtained in the drill holes put down since 1938 by steep Rock Iron Mines Ltd. are not only of interest, in themselves, to those concerned with the development of ore deposits, but, taken in connection with the surface exposures of adjoining formations, they form the assemblage of facts from which the geological reasoning in this paper proceeds; accordingly, they are set out here as briefly and exactly as may be.

(New York Meeting, February, 1313.) I. INTRODUCTION. IN the metallurgical treatment of most metallic sulphides it is usually necessary to carry on a roasting-operation. In some cases the raw ore will have to be roasted.; in others the intermediary product, matte, produced in smelting the ore; again, both ore and matte may have to be subjected to oxidation at elevated temperatures. Most metallic sulphides, when given an oxidizing-roast, pass through the state of sulphate before they are converted into oxides. All metallic sulphates are completely decomposed by heat, with the exception of those of lead and bismuth, but the temperatures at which decompositions take place vary with the metals. Some metallic sulphates are converted directly into oxides, others first form basic salts. Alkali-earth sulphates show a behavior similar to that of metallic sulphates, while alkali sulphates do not part with their sulphur trioxide even at elevated roasting-temperatures. The older data on the decomposition of metallic sulphates by beat are only approximations. Thus Kerl 1 gives the order in which metallic sulphates are decomposed with increasing temperatures as (Ag2, Fe, Cu, Zn, Ni, CO, Mn, Pb) SO4. More recent statements give definite temperatures and modify the formerly accepted order of decomposition. But the temperatures given by various observers do not agree. The reasons for this are to be found mainly in the method and manner of carrying out experiments. Four methods have been used: 1. Internal-oxide precipitates in decarburized a iron alloys were studied by microscopic and X-ray methods. Diffusion of oxygen is primarily trans-granular, although large amounts of manganese or PhosPhorus cause preferred grain boundary dimsion at temperatures below 1450OF. Transgvanular internal oxidation follows the parabolic rate law with an apparent activation energy of 60 kcal per g-atom for decarburized rimmed steel and around 50 kcal per g-atom for higher alloy contents. The internal oxide is (Fe,Mn)0. Evidence was found for a miscibility gap in the FeO-MnO system. UNTIL very recently, the internal oxidation of metals was studied primarily as a scientific curiosity or, in a few cases, as a means of strengthening alloys by precipitation hardening. However, with the recent development of low-carbon enameling sheet steel, internal oxidation has become a problem of practical importance to the steel industry. For example, in 1961 it was reported1 that internal oxidation of steel can occur during decar-burization by open-coil annealing and will reduce the notch ductility of the sheet unless the process is carefully controlled. The present study was therefore undertaken to learn more about the rates and mechanism of oxygen diffusion and oxide formation in iron alloys. BACKGROUND The process of internal oxidation has been well-defined in the literature:',' oxygen dissolves in an alloy, diffuses inward from the surface of the metal, and reacts to form a precipitate with the alloying element that will provide the most stable oxide. he growth of the finely divided so-called subscale, i.e., the internal-oxidation zone, depends on the diffusion rates of both the oxygen and the reactive element.4 Investigators have generally found that increasing the temperature increases the size of the oxide particles, the rate of subscale growth, and the tendency to transgranular diffusion. With very few exceptions, the square of the thickness of the internal oxide layer is directly proportional to the reaction time. Given two conditions easily satisfied for iron systems— a) an oxygen solubility much less than the concentration of the alloying metal and b) an oxygen-diffusion rate to the oxide boundary much faster than that of the alloying element—then the general expression developed by Rhines and co-workers5 for the parabolic growth rate of the internal-oxide zone can be simplified to the following form: where Co and CM are, respectively, the solubility of oxygen and the concentration of the alloying element, DO is the diffusion coefficient of oxygen, O/M is the weight ratio of oxygen to metal in the precipitated oxide, and x is the thickness of the internal-oxide zone after an annealing time t. Both the oxygen solubility and diffusion coefficient can be approximately expressed as functions of temperature by Arrhenius-type equations: in which H and Q are, respectively, the heat of solution and the activation energy of diffusion. Consequently, the apparent activation energies calculated from Arrhenius plots are the sum of the heat of solution of oxygen in iron and the activation energy for diffusion of oxygen. The data, if not the interpretation, of Schenck et al.8 bear out the fact that oxygen diffuses in the atomic form. The general rate law for atomic diffusion is: the reaction rate being proportional to the square root of the pressure at low pressures. Benard and Moreau8 studied both the surface oxidation of Fe-Ni alloys and the gradual penetration of oxygen into the metal. They observed that oxide particles first form along grain boundaries and then grow to form continuous films that eventually envelop the grains. The parabolic rate law does not usually apply in these cases, especially at the higher temperatures. The use of coke in metallurgy, to any important degree, dates from the middle of the 18th century. Its utilization came most opportunely for European civilization. The forests of Europe, except in the most remote and inaccessible regions, had been largely fed, in the form of charcoal, into the smelting furnaces. For a hundred years—the middle of the 17th to the middle of the 18th century—there .was a stationary condition of population corresponding to the exhaustion of European forests. This situation, which was particularly evident in Great Britain, was due to the fact that the forests had been depleted and the practical utilization of coke had not begun. The coking industry is essential for our metallurgical industries, which in turn are basal to healthy economic progress. But coke is of great importance, not only on its own account, but for its byproducts, which enter fundamentally into all the arts of peace and war. The dyestuff industry and the manufacture of explosives are intimately connected with one another, as was shown by the recent war. The subject of coking coal, therefore, is well worthy the serious attention both of practical industry and the scientific investigator. The most valuable coking coals, from the metallurgical standpoint, are derived from the coals of highest ranks. Coals, for example, that have a carbon ratio of from 70 to 80 per cent. yield the most valuable coke for the blast furnace. The difficulty of investigating these coals, however, is great, for they are rather friable and delicate and possess a high carbon content, which makes them difficult to manipulate. They present, on account of their high carbon content, a considerable degree of opacity when examined, in thin sections, under the microscope. The tenderness of structure and blackness of such high-grade coking coals as those of Connellsville and the Pocahontas region make them extremely difficult to investigate. Two of my colleagues, who are taking part in this discussion, will describe the valuable results that have been reached by studying coal by the methods of the mineralogist. minerals of different specific gravities. It is simple in construction, easily operated, capable of treating large quantities in a short time, and highly efficient under various conditions. The question, whether the material to be jigged has first been sized, determines the two principal methods of jigging. Jigging preceded by close sizing, generally known as the Continental or German system, involves a more or less elaborate series of screens or trommels, with attendant cost for installation, operation, and repairs. Jigging without sizing, known as the English system, is, according to Munroe,1 a development of the hand-jigging formerly employed in Cornwall . and introduced by English miners to this country." In its simplest form, the method consists in jigging an ore-mixture previously crushed to some maximum size (although, in some cases, even this preliminary is omitted) oil a relatively coarse sieve, and then jigging again on a filler sieve, the material passing through the first sieve and bedding. While many modifications have been necessary to adapt it for use in mills of large capacity, where hand-work was necessarily, replaced by machines, the principle remains the same; the fact that the English system has been successfully employed, both in this country and abroad, is well known; and arguments have been made for its efficiency and applicability in a wider sphere than it has occupied hitherto. II. REVIEW OF PREVIOUS INVESTIGATIONS. The fact that treating a mixture of minerals under jigging conditions increased the amount of mineral saved, or, as Professor Richards aptly terms it, 1 ?the extra jig-catch," has long been known. To account for this fact a number of theories have been proposed. The work of Rittinger2 in this field has, for many years, been a classic in the literature of ore-dressing. For the purposes of my present paper, however, the work of two American investigators, Prof. H. S. Munroe and Prof. R. H. Richards, is chiefly concerned. Professor Munroe has given the results of an elaborate series of experiments,3 and his deductions, based largely oil theoretical grounds, of this work. In the first paper on the Russell process presented by Mr. Stetefeldt, in May, 1884 (Transactions, xiii.), the process was treated from a purely theoretical standpoint.. 111 his second paper of October, 1886 (Transactions, xv,), the details of the plant, the chemicals used, and the manipulation in both mill and laboratory were treated. The aim of the present paper is to present economical results recently attained, new data affecting the preparation and manipulation of ore in the mill, and a more complete and systematic scheme of laboratory work. This paper is compiled mainly from Mr. Russell's notes of his own experience. Many of these notes, particularly those relating to work at Cusihuiriachic,* Mexico, have been upon work directly under the personal observation of the compiler, who takes pleasure in thus presenting to the Institute, data and considerations of much interest and value pot only to users of the Russell process, but to mill men generally. The description of the chemicals used and of the preparation of the mill-solutions being' in part the same now as when Mr. Stetefeldt's second paper was published, some use is here made of portions of that paper. No theoretical matter is here given. For a treatise containing also the theory of the process the reader is referred to Mr. Stetefeldt's complete work on " Lixiviation of Silver Ores by Hyposulphite Solutions," now in preparation. To facilitate the consultation of this paper, the following synopsis and index is prefixed. The figures in parenthesis indicate the page of this paper on which the subject is treated.

THE opening session of the Institute was held at Hazle Hall, Tuesday evening, October 27th, with a large attendance of members. President Raymond called the Institute to order, and after a few introductory remarks, introduced Mr. I. Lowthian Bell, President of the Iron and Steel Institute of Great Britain, and Honorary Member of the American Institute of Mining Engineers. Mr. Bell was received with great applause, and made his acknowledgments in a brief speech, of which the following is the substance: He desired to thank the Institute personally for the honor conferred upon him in his election to membership, and also for the invitation extended last year to the body of which he was President. The difficulty felt by many members of the Iron and Steel Institute, of leaving for a long journey the works of which they had charge, aggravated by special industrial troubles at the time of the invitation, had obliged them to conclude that it could not then be accepted in a fitting manner. The iron manufacture of this country is a subject of great interest to Englishmen, who look with pride upon the achievements on this side the water of the descendants of a common ancestry. His own reception in this country had far surpassed in cordiality even the well-grounded anticipations he had formed from the assurances of the President and other friends. Notwithstanding the flattering manner in which his friend, in introducing him to the Institute, had spoken of his contributions to the science of iron metallurgy, he could not take to himself alone the significance of this welcome. He knew it was a recognition of the services rendered by the body which he had the honor to represent; and he was glad to see present a member of that body, Mr. Thomas Whitwell, who had fortunately been able to make the journey at this time, and whom he had had the pleasure of meeting on the shores of Lake Champlain. DESPITE the loss, by enemy conquest, of a high percentage of our normal sources of supply for tin, the position of this important metal is easier today than that of rubber and a long list of other strategic materials, many of which are produced in this country. Actually, there is no shortage of tin for essential war purposes, owing to a strict control of its use, to increasing considerably the amount of secondary tin available, and to the foresight of the Government in authorizing the Reconstruction Finance Corp., as early as June, 1940, to acquire and produce certain critical and strategic materials of which tin was one of the most important. The construction of the Longhorn Smelter on the Gulf Coast in Texas is an important part of this program.

INTRODUCTION. IN considering the magnificent success of Mr. Gayley's Bold experiment of applying dry blast to the blast-furnace, whereby , saving of 20 per cent. of fuel per ton of iron is effected, the question arises whether, still further economy in fuel is possible, and, if so, how it is to be attained? The manner in which the heat generated in the furnace is utilized in the production of pig-iron may be determined, by the method of Bell and Gruner, for any furnace for which the necessary data are obtainable ; and the study of the operation,. tinder various conditions, of a number of furnaces, for which such information has been worked out., should enable us to form some conclusion on the subject. The tables and calculations given below cover the operations of several furnaces reported in our Transactions; also the two furnaces using natural and dry blast in ,Mr. Gayley's experiment, for which the heat-equation has been worked out by Prof. Joseph W. Richards in his admirable discussion' of Mr. Gayley's paper, The Application of Dry Air Blast to the Manufacture of Iron, and, finally, various hypothetical furnaces.. The full list is as follows : A. Isabella furnace, with natural blast. B. Isabella furnace, with dry blast. The data stated. for A and B in Table III. are those given by Professor Richards; except that the heat-units are given for one unit of iron instead of 100 units, and some items of heat supplied, as stated by Richards, have been subdivided, the total being the same as given by Richards. (Columns A and B are introduced in Table III. for comparison with C and D.)
