A case study from a current Ausenco project is presented to demonstrate the importance of maintaining high carbon activity to illustrate the driving force for plant improvements such as a carbon regeneration kiln upgrade.This paper revisits the factors that influence carbon activity for gold loading, with emphasis on deactivation by organic solution components such as flotation reagents.Kiln process design requirements for effective thermal regeneration are reviewed including the interaction of parameters such as temperature, kiln atmosphere and residence time.The different types of kilns that have been used for carbon reactivation are described. A check list is provided of what to look for when purchasing a carbon reactivation system for dealing with severely fouled carbon. This covers the ancillary equipment as well as the kiln itself.While the effectiveness of the carbon reactivation kiln is vital to maintenance of high carbon activity it needs to be remembered that this is only the end of pipe solution. It is also important to ensure that reagents such as frothers and flotation collectors are appropriately chosen to maximise recovery and at the same time minimise carbon deactivation.CITATION:La Brooy, S R and Claflin, J K, 2013. This paper presents the results from the investigation of the application of thermal fragmentation in Australian hard rock underground narrow-vein mining. Two geologically similar samples from an underground narrow-vein hard rock gold mine were collected to obtain a measure of the technology’s ability to recover ore by the creation of large thermal openings to assess the applicability of the thermal method. Particle size distribution showed a higher generation of fine product, − 2 mm, by thermal fragmentation compared with selective blasting by 31%. The Bond work index for thermal ore (12.62 kWh/t) is half to that of the blasted ore value (25.32 kWh/t). The average grindability obtained for the thermal ore sample was greater than the blasted sample by a factor of 2.44, a higher value indicating a decrease in the energy required to grind. The thermal fragmentation method generates product with higher dissolution of gold in cyanide, by 14% for the − 9.5 + 2 mm size fraction samples. Additionally, the thermal fragmentation results in higher production of − 9.5 + 2 mm material by 15 % compared with selective blasting.

An abandened breakwater, located at the rear of No. 2 berth in Dongdu Port area of Xiamen City, was not cleaned thoroughly when the backfilling of sand started. The uncleaned stone layer was about 2 to 3 meters deep, with the average piece of stone weighing about 1 to 3 kN. A large grain storing house, 220X 60m2 in area, was designed and built at the above mentioned complicated site. The foundation of the grain house are made up of the cast-in-situ piles. It is well known that it is difficult for the submarine engineering drill to go down through such large-sized stones. Having com-pared the various plans, a final decision has been made which involves explosions with small amounts of charge plus cone bit in the enlarging of the size of the pores. Such a method has successfully prevented the pores from slumping and made it possible to fulfill the project without any difficulties. This paper also introduces the ways in effectively dealing with each individual stone.

The pile capacity gain with time evaluated and implemented for the construction of the Route 21 Viaduct in Newark, NJ, U.S.A is discussed in this paper. The project consisted of the replacement of more than 3.2 km of viaduct and ramps. The project site consists of thick residual materials deposited by the Wisconsin Glacier over sedimentary rocks. The upper portion is glacial-lacustrine deposit underlain by marginal morainic till and stratified drift. Subsurface investigations identified significant variations in layer thickness and grain size consistency. The site was characterized into 4 Soil types, based on subsurface soil behavior. Closed end 600 mm and 450 mm diameter driven pipe piles were used for the foundation. Loading tests conducted during an advanced construction contract, established that a significant soil set-up could be expected. For the first construction contract, a pilot loading test program consisting of 112 dynamic loading tests and 77 re-strikes (at 2 to 4 weeks) using the PDA (Pile Driving Analyzer) with CAPWAP (Case Pile Wave Analyses Program) was conducted to establish the soil set-up behavior. Nine (9) quick static loading tests were conducted to substantiate the long-term pile capacity. Based on the loading test results, average set-up factors were established and utilized for developing production pile driving criteria. Bearing resistance with depth was analyzed and reviewed. The set-up factors varied significantly, ranging from 1.05 to 1.89, and averaged about 1.30. Conclusions are derived. Set-up factors behavior for each soil type plotted by linear regression are presented and discussed. An appropriate set-up with time relationship for a glacial soil is suggested.

Mr. Natta graduated in 1973 from Colorado School of Mines with a B.S. in Metalurgical Engineering and a M.S. in Mineral Economics. Since 1974, he has been employed by Utah International having spent 5 years in San Francisco as Senior Market Analyst. In this capacity he was responsible for market development efforts for Utah's U. S. coal reserves. Recently, he was transferred to Craig, Colorado, as Administrative Manager of Utah's Trapper Mine. In this position, he is responsible for purchasing, warehousing, accounting and sales contract administration. The second speaker was Brucks Mitchell, President, Human Resources Management, Inc. Richardson, Texas. Subject-"Making Unions Unnecessary in the Coal Industry." Mr. Mitchell has a B.A. degree in English-Oklahoma State University. M.B.A. degree in Organizational Behavior-Southern Methodist University. Ph.D Candidate - Organizational Behavior - North Texas State University. Mr. Mitchell formed an Association of Consultants to perform assignments in Industrial Psychology and Human Resources Management. Particular emphasis has been to establish policies and procedures to make labor unions unnecessary. He has been consultant to various industrial and municipal organizations.

"Falconbridge’s Raglan Concentrator, located at the northern limit of Quebec’s Nunavik Region, has been in operation since December 1997. Originally designed to process 800,000 tonnes per year of high grade nickel ore, plant capacity is currently approaching 1,000,000 tonnes per year. Optimization of the ABC grinding circuit has proven to be the most challenging component of this capacity increase. Concurrent flotation circuit modifications have allowed concentrate grades to increase from 16 to 18 percent nickel, while maintaining recoveries. Concentrate drying problems encountered during the first 15 months of operation have been addressed through equipment upgrades. The challenges associated with surface deposition of filtered tailings in an arctic environment are now better understood, and detailed design of the progressive reclamation cover is underway.GRINDINGCircuit OverviewOre from open pit and underground mining operations is introduced to the underground ore handling system via surface and underground truck dumps. Two underground bins with a combined capacity of 4000 tonnes provide roughly a day of live capacity for ore storage. Ore from the two bins is conveyed to a 150 tonne surge bin immediately ahead of the grinding circuit in the concentrator.The Raglan grinding circuit has a conventional ABC configuration (Figure 1) with a design capacity of 100 mtph (800,000 tonnes per year). The 24’ AG mill is powered by a 3000 hp motor with variable speed drive. AG discharge is sized on a 8’x16’ single deck vibrating screen, with screen oversize recirculating to a 5 %’ short head cone crusher (400 hp) before returning to the AG mill. Screen undersize is combined with ball mill discharge to feed up to 5 15” Krebs hydrocyclones. The ball mill is a 14’x 21’ overflow mill driven by a 3000 hp motor at 73% critical speed. Target Pgo for the grinding circuit product is 65 microns"

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed ultrasonic measurement instrumentation capable of measuring strains and elongations on tensioned and untensioned mine roof bolting systems. This report evaluates the pulsed-phase-lock-loop and pulse-echo systems. The pulse-echo systems measure time of flight of a signal through the bolt. The ultrasonic instrument converts the measurement into elongations or stress. The most recent Bureau instrument development converts travel-time measurements directly into elongation, load, stress, and torque by simple data manipulation from the keyboard. Bolt preparation and instrument calibration are described in detail.

Residual aeolian placers (RAPs) are formed by the wind, by preferential entrainment and removal of small and low-density detritusfrom a pre-existing, typically sedimentary sequence containing heavy minerals. Heavy minerals that are resistant to chemical alteration and either soft and malleable (gold), or extremely hard (diamond, sapphire, ruby, etc), are concentrated as a residual on the wind deflation surface, typically in the interstices between larger resistant clasts. RAPs form preferentially in arid or semi arid areas, where the vegetation is sparse or absent, and where topography and surface gradients are low, but may also form on beaches and in periglacial environments. RAPs consist of a continuous or discontinuous, planar or gently undulating horizon of heavy minerals in a single-clast-thick pavement of resistant pebbles, cobbles, or boulders, which mantles the present topography or palaeo-topography. Extreme wind erosion and surface deflation may condense the full pre-existing sequence into a layer of heavy minerals only. The grade of RAPs is substantially higher than in the precursor deposit, and commonly much higher than those typically found in most other placer types. Aside from their general occurrence as a thin pavement of resistant clasts, the best indicators of residual aeolian gold placers are the presence of wind-eroded stones (ventifacts) on the pavement, and the distinctive and unique shapes of aeolian gold grains themselves. The shape of the gold grains is progressively transformed by sand blasting during placer development, from grains with thickened rims, to toroidal grains on which the rims are æsplitÆ and peened inward toward the grain centre on one or both of the grain sides, to hemispherical or sub-spherical grains that are fully encapsulated by the in-turned rims. Gold that has undergone aeolian shape transformation is difficult to entrain and transport away from the site of aeolian concentration by anything other than mass movement or glacial processes. It is also easily retained by commercial recovery plants of any configuration.

"Bubble area flux has been claimed to be a major tool to dimension flotation equipment. The paper describes laboratory scale (batch and 301 continuous cell using plant feed) and small-scale (1 ,8m3) industrial experiments with coarse-grained massive sulphide ore.Samples were taken with different froth thickness and air addition rates while the bubble size was measured with an UTC capillary device. Problems of averaging the bubble size measurements and the bubble area flux measurements are also discussed.Material balances were calculated using the commercial program BILCO. The flotation rate constants were calculated for pulp and for froth assuming that we can extrapolate the flotation rate constant of the pulp phase from tests using very thin froth thicknesses.The results indicate that the bubble area flux is not alone an adequate dimensioning tool. With fine sizes there was a nearly linear relationship between the bubble area flux and rate constant for constant impeller revolutions. For coarse sizes the form of the relationship is non-linear and seems to go through a maximum value. Thus the final flotation outcome is not a simple function of bubble area flux but depends on the particle size distribution and other more traditional flotation cell dimensioning variables. The effect of the froth residence time in the total recovery of coarse particles is large, but will not be treated in this paper."

The Eurocode 7 "Geotechnical Design" is based on "Limit State Design", tackling the uncertainties as much as possible at their source through: - selection of characteristic values of variables (loads, soil properties, pile resistance,...); - partial factors applied on the characteristic values; - model factors to account explicitly for uncertainties of the calculation rule if necessary. Eurocode 7 will propose three "design approaches". The selection of one of them will be by National Determination. For pile design, the approaches are: - approach 1 is a "material factoring approach" at load side and a "resistance factoring approach" at resistance side. The structural and geotechnical design are checked for both of two separate sets of partial factors. - approach 2 is a "load and resistance factoring approach" and is in several aspects close to a deterministic approach. The design is checked for one set of partial factors. - approach 3 is a material factoring approach, at load as well as at resistance side. The design is checked for one set of factors. The aim of this paper is to introduce to the design of pile foundations based on pile load tests and on ground test results (semi-empirical and analytical methods) in the frame-work of the three design approaches. Detailed attention is devoted to: - the selection of the characteristic value of the pile resistance, accounting for spatial variability and stiffness of the structure; - the reliability of the prediction of the pile resistance using analytical or semi-empirical methods which may be accounted for through a "model factor". The results of a large test campaign on screw piles in OC Clay and a calculation example illustrate the proposed procedure when calculation rules using CPT results are used.

The Timbarra opencut gold mine is located about 30 km(19 miles) southeast of Tenterfield in northern NSW some 4 hours by car from Brisbane, the capital city of Queensland in Australia. It was a small operation designed to produce about 40000 ounces of gold per annum utilising contract mining and company owned crushing plant feeding heap leach pads. This is a standard setup except that the mine owner was in charge of all aspects of drill & blast design even though a contract drilling & blasting (shotfiring) service was being provided. The major problem was that the blasting operations were yielding massive amounts of oversize due to the jointed partially weathered nature of the granite. This was adversely affecting all downstream aspects of the operation as well reducing gold output as ore boulders were being dozed over the side of the mine as they were impinging on mining productivity. The oversize problem had to be solved as the mine was struggling to achieve design gold output. Significant design & trialing effort using minesite resources were utilised to reduce the oversize but this failed even when powder factors up to 1kg/bcm(1.68lb/yd) were used. Dyno Consult from Dyno Nobel were therefore called to investigate, review & trial options to reduce oversize from the top flitch.

The Wednesday Morning Session of the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute was called to order by Albert Keenan of the Thompson Creek Coal and Coke Company, Denver, Colorado, in the absence of the President. He introduced Edward Prostel of the University of Wyoming Natural Resources Research Institute, Laramie, Wyoming, who spoke on "Coal Utilization Work at the University of Wyoming." (Please refer to the index for printed text of the paper.) Following Mr. Prostel's talk, R. Park Lamborn of the National Mine Service Company, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania asked Mr. Prostel two questions: (1) What -has been done in tar research? and (2) Has there been large scale research on brickets? Mr. Prostel stated that he could not say too much about the first question as this research was done in the petroleum department and he would prefer to have a chemist talk about it. As to the second question, the system of carbonization is a big project. There are many possibilities. At the University they are trying to do that in the same unit that produces the char. This system was introduced in Canada. The brickets are bound with sulphite liquor. Mr. Schloss asked Mr. Prostel to report on a project that they have been working on at the University, and Mr. Prostel stated that some time ago they began to experiment to see if it would be economically possible to dry coal at the mine (coal containing 30% moisture) and then ship it a distance of 130 miles to be used. Results are that it would be possible, but will require a considerable quantity. He felt it might be possible to operate such a scheme in a few years.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated 21 mines, prospects, and mineralized sites in and adjacent to a 38,713-acre portion of the 255,058-acre Kingston Range Wilderness Study Area in 1983. The study area is 35 miles north of Baker, CA in the Mojave Desert. Mineral deposits in and adjacent to the study area are in altered carbonate rocks intruded by diabase sills near monzonite porphyry contacts. Monzonite porphyry forms the core of the Kingston Range and underlies about 70 percent of the study area. Sedimentary carbonate rocks are exposed in bands on the north and east boundaries and as isolated roof pendants in the southeastern portion of the study area.

Desde 1999 se desarrollaron pruebas de lixiviación de concentrados en la planta LESDE de Toquepala con el propósito de evaluar las recuperaciones y los tiempos de procesamiento. Las recuperaciones a nivel laboratorio indican que la promoción de la actividad bacteriana es uno de los factores para acelerar el proceso de solubilización del cobre calcopiritico del concentrado. La actividad bacteriana se define como la capacidad de adaptación que tienen las bacterias en medios lixiviantes para elevar la velocidad de oxidación del ión ferroso y convertirlo en férrico y es el mecanismo para la lixiviación del sulfuro primario o calcopirita, el resultado de la interacción de las bacterias ferrooxidantes, el oxígeno y el control de ácido que mantienen un pH por debajo de 2.1. En ese sentido, el presente texto señala las pruebas de lixiviación de concentrados que incluyen estos últimos conceptos, con el objetivo de evaluar la factibilidad técnica y económica de obtener licores de cobre que puedan ser aprovechados utilizando la capacidad existente de extracción por solventes y electrodepositación de la planta LESDE Toquepala.

A new type of steady-state thermal conductivity apparatus is presented and described. Results of measurements on Berea sandstone, Solehofen limestone, Bandera sandstone and Bakelite are presented. The measurements were made in a two-hour period at temperatures up to 80C and axial stress to 125 bars. Results show that the thermoelectric heat pump and tbermistor-controlled electric heater can be used in a steady-state apparatus for measuring thermal conductivity of mck. Steady-state is reached within two hours. With Urethane foam insulation, not more than 3 per cent of heat is lost by radial flaw. The apparatus can be used as a comparator or for absolute thermal conductivity determinations. INTRODUCTION Calculations of heat flow through the earth, both for scientific purposes and engineering design, require thermal-conductivity data on rock. However, the high variability of rock often makes handbook thermal-conductivity data of little value. For engineering purposes in particular, it is desirable to have measured data on samples of the rock mass under study. Laboratory methods for measuring thermal conductivity of rock use either time-dependent1-3 or steady - state temperatures .4,5 The time -dependent (transient) techniques give thermal diffusivity from which thermal conductivity can be calculated if the specific heat and density of the sample is known. Most transient techniques require lengthy and involved sample preparation. Also, the accuracy tends to be low. Steady-state techniques are more exact and are the most commonly used. The steady-state methods, however, also have their difficulties. A long time is often required to reach steady state, troubles have been encountered in establishing good thermal contact between the heating and cooling elements and the rock sample, and unaccounted-for heat losses are difficult to prevent. In this paper we present a description of a new type of steady-state thermal conductivity apparatus. With it, measurements have been made in two hours at temperatures up to 80C and axial stress to 125 bars. Sample preparation is simple and no thermal conductivity standard is needed.6 APPARATUS Our steady-state apparatus is an improvement . over the conduction pile used by Zierfuss and van der vliet4 and Somerton.5 A linear heat flux is established through a conduction pile consisting of the rock sample and a standard material of known thermal conductivity in series. Where soil conditions are favorable, augercast piles have significant economic advantages, but they also have some uncertainty due to the in construction methods. To confirm structural integrity, static testing can be performed on a small sample of piles. Other Non-Destructive Evaluation methods like Pulse Echo are frequently specified for a large percentage of the remaining production piles. However, such NDE methods require testing the pile after the grout/concrete has hardened. If problems are found, then the repair or replacement can be relatively expensive. The confidence in the quality of these piles can be improved by automatically monitoring the grout pumped as a function of depth during the grouting phase of installation. If a low grout volume is detected, the pile can be redrilled and regrouted immediately while the piling rig is still in place and the grout still fluid. This considerably reduces remedial costs. To be effective, such installation monitors must accurately determine both grout volume and depth during installation and be rugged simple to operate. Such an equipment can be of great help to the installation crews. The assurance gained may reduce the need for subsequent NDE tests. The quality of inspection of driven piles depends heavily on the inspection personnel. While inspection is critical in a good installation, it is sometimes assigned a low priority. Inspection personnel in many cases are technicians with little pile experience. They may not understand the project needs or even how the pile driving equipment works. The task is often monotonous and any distraction makes accurate record keeping difficult. In some cases inspection is totally ignored for lack of qualified personnel. Electronic systems can automatically and accurately monitor driven pile installations and include documentation of certain hammer performance parameters. This paper describes equipment available and routinely in use for automated monitoring of both augercast and driven piles and demonstrates applications on typical construction sites. This paper describes the preliminary design of the fourth bore of the Caldecott Tunnels along State Route 24 in Oakland, California. The paper focus is on two major aspects of the project: initial support system design and seismic design. The initial support system was designed based on the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM).NATM provides the required flexibility to accommodate the variable ground conditions in the weak, folded, and faulted rock along the alignment. The seismic design provides a final lining system that meets serviceability requirements for a 1,500 year seismic event with an estimated peak ground acceleration of 1.2g.

Mining steeply dipping coal seams is a difficult task in the mining industry. Prior to 1996, fully mechanized longwall mining methods along the seam strike direction were tried in China and other countries. Due to its larger coal reserve in steep seams, China made more but still limited progresses on mining in such seams than the other major coal-mining countries. In the last two decades, accelerated research efforts have been made to improve the mining technology in steeply dipping coal seams. Based on these works, a dynamic model of ?R-S-F? system under asymmetrical constrains in mining steep seam is established and the theory of strata control and hazard prevention begin to be formed. The key technologies for mining steep coal seams include: global and regional strata control methods in longwall face, methods for the longwall face machines to sustain static and dynamic loads, and flexible protection technology. These theory and technologies have been successfully applied to mining of steep coal seams of varying thickness and hardness, with hard and soft roof and floor, and with high potential of spontaneous combustion in China. In the recent years, the technology has been introduced to Russia, India, Uzbekistan and other countries where steep coal seams are mined.
