"Minera Penmont, at La Herradura, is a joint venture between Industrias Peñoles, S.A. de C.V., and Newmont Mining Corporation. The mine is located in the northern Mexican state of Sonora. La Herradura consists of an open pit mine with two-stage crushing and heap leaching facility, the gold is recovered from the pregnant solution using the Merrill-Crowe process; production began in July 1998. La Herradura produces about 130,000 gold ounces per year, and treatment capacity is 22,000 tonnes/day. Ore mineralization occurs in a shear zone with quartz and native gold. Gold distribution is quite heterogeneous due to the coarse visible gold, in some coarser particles ranging from 100 to 600 microns.Sampling and assaying protocols where established during exploration and prior to starting up operations, based on nomographs developed from early heterogeneity tests. But, as the coarse gold problem became noticeable, it was necessary to develop new sampling protocols to have an acceptable relative standard deviation to control the fundamental error within ± 15%.An experimental program was developed and conducted on a selected ore block made of 195 blastholes; regular ore grade control procedures were applied to both sets of data to evaluate the difference in results between the protocol established prior to starting up operations (“existing”) and the new protocol (“leaching”). In the “existing” protocol, subsampling is done through riffle splitters, and coning and quartering. Fire assaying is used to estimate the gold content, on a 50 g sample. In the “leaching” protocol a 12,000 g sample was bottle rolled cyanide leached, and the leach residue was assayed on a 50 g sample using fire assaying, and a weighted average total gold content was calculated. Currently, a new alternative method is being evaluated, where sub-sampling is done using rotary splitters, and fire assay on a 50 g sample; in this “rotary sampling” protocol and for comparison purposes, gold assays were also repeated using the “leaching” protocol.Test results were compared in three groups < 0.30 g/t (below cut-off), 0.30 to 0.8 g/t, and >0.8 g/t. Overall. Results show that the protocol established prior to starting up operations underestimates the gold assays. Detailed technical results, alternative options, and their implications are discussed in the paper."

Using a series-model of an automotive short range radar sensor (SRR) and a recently completed experimental radar system, field tests have been performed in a surface mine. It was examined, to what extent low-cost electronically scanning radar sensors can provide useful data for assistance systems on large scale mining machines. Simple sensors are useful for anti-collision safety zones or hopper car automation. The more complex and sophisticated experimental radar system using digital beam-forming can clearly detect and map the contours of trenches and slopes. The overall promising results refer to many more potential applications for electronically scanning radar in surface and underground mining as a reliable alternative to mechanical laser scanners.

The Meadowbank mine is operated by Agnico-Eagle Mines Ltd. and is located in the Kivalliq District of Nunavut in northern Canada. The process plant operates presently at a throughput of 11,500 tpd with gold grade varying between 2.9 and 3.6 g/t. The ore supplied to the process plant come from two different open pits and it expected to come from a new open pit early 2014. The ore is mid-hard materials so the feed size ore have a bigger impact on the throughput. The average gold recovery is 94.0% with about 15-30% of gold recover from the gravity circuit. The Meadowbank mine commissioning started in February 2010 utilizing a flowsheet consisting of one stage of crushing followed by primary and secondary grinding. The commercial production began in March 2010. During the commissioning several difficulties were observed to reach the designed throughput of 8,500 tpd. It was evaluated to insert a second stage of crushing. The insertion of the secondary crushing have two objectives, first to reach easily the process plant design throughput as well as to evaluated the mill capacity increasing. The process plant team evaluated various expansion alternatives eventually deciding to install a secondary crusher, increased the SAG and Ball mills motors capacities and maintain the rest of the process unchanged. Early 2011, with the improvement in the gold markets, decision was made to install the secondary crusher between the primary crusher and the primary grinding. The process plant continued to operate on the initial design until early June 2011. This paper presents the SAG mill throughput increasing from the designed tonnage of 8,500 tpd to 2012 targeted tonnage of 11,500 tpd, secondary crusher commissioning and the difficulties to operate in Canada Artic (Nunavut).

The Jim Bridger Coal Mine’has made highwall stability a priority, concentrating on safety as well as increasing and improving production. Overburden depths are increasing dramatically; the geological environment consists of medium to sot? material, faulting, water, and current pit alignment not favorable to joint planes. INTRODUCTION East Side Access (ESA) Contract CQ028 is located in the New York City Borough of Queens. The contract involves construction of a 230-meter (760-foot) long open-cut excavation with a permanent deck supporting Amtrak yard tracks over a semi-circular TBM launch wall on the east end, and the 36.5-meter (120-foot) long Northern Blvd. Crossing on the west end. The Northern Boulevard Crossing will be mined under an existing New York City Transit (NYCT) five-track subway tunnel; Northern Boulevard, a heavily traveled five-lane truck route; and an existing NYCT three-track elevated line; connecting to an existing open-cut shaft adjacent to the existing 63rd Street Tunnel bellmouth. When completed, Contract CQ028 will provide access for future Manhattan and Queens tunnel contracts. The footprint of the open-cut was determined by the geometric requirements of the future Plaza Interlocking facility to be constructed within in another future ESA contract. See Figure 1. This paper discusses design risk mitigations for the key elements of the contract, namely the Northern Blvd. Crossing and the semi-circular TBM Launch Wall. PROJECT OVERVIEW The Metropolitan Transportation Authority Capital Construction Company—East Side Access Project for the Long Island Rail Road will provide Long Island commuters with direct access to Manhattan’s East Side via a new rail line between the Harold Interlocking in Queens and Grand Central Terminal in Manhattan. The project connects the unused lower level of the existing tunnel under the East River at 63rd Street to new connecting tunnels in Queens and Manhattan. Through education, investigations, and studies and an expanded coal- mino inspection program the Bureau continued to dischargo the responsibility placed on it by Congress 39 years ago for promoting safety and health in the mineral industries. Although much still remains to be dono, definite progress was made in combating physical and psychological hazards in mines and plants. Accident-prevention cours os for coal-mine supervisory officials and special courses for coal-mine safety committeeman were inaugurated. First- aid, mine rescue, and other safety training was conducted for those engaged in all branches of the mineral industries. Assistance was given in recovery work after mine explosions and fires. Studies to reduce the danger of roof falls, the greatest single cause of fatal mine accidents, resulted in the development and adoption of new coal-mine roof-support techniques. Knowledge of the explosion and health hazards of mine and plant dusts and ways of pre-. venting them were advanced. Electrical equipment was tested for safety of operation in gassy coal mines, and emergency mine communications apparatus was developed and tested. More progress was made in the study of controlling flood waters that threaten life and property in the Pennsylvania anthracite region. More coal-mine inspections were made than in any previous year, and an impressive number of improvements resulted from the Federal inspectors' recommendations, even though many of them went unheeded. A program of con- trolling fires in inactive coal deposits on the public domain and private property was instituted during the year.

This report compares a proposed 10/60 "piggyback" 02 generating self-rescue unit to the standard CO self-rescue unit with respect to work task interference. A simulated low seam coal mine was constructed and subjects performed locomotion, shoveling, cart pushing, and timbering tasks with the 10/60 or self-rescuer attached to their belts. Task completion time was longer on all tasks when wearing the 10/60 unit, although only locomotion was statistically significant. The 10/60 unit was bumped over 100% more often than the standard self-rescuer. Implications for design of the proposed 10/60 container are: 1) unit?s container must be extra durable to withstand the added abuse it is likely to receive by low coal miners; and 2) extra consideration must be given to preventing the device from slipping on the belt while working, especially in low coal.

Except when the target is on the surface, e.g. a tank track, the most important loading mechanism from a buried charge on a target above it is the impact of soil propelled at the target by the expanding gas from the explosion. Detonation of a shallow buried explosive generally yields an unstable interface between the rising soil and the air which appears to be the result of Richtmyer-Meshkov instability. Irregular “fingers” of saturated sand extend into the air above a more generalized dome of soil. These fingers move at a much higher velocity than the material between them at smaller stand off distances. As a result, the local load on the target at positions on the target at the same distance from the charge may vary by 50% or more from shot to shot or even within a single shot. This variation requires a large design safety factor to assure the integrity of design of mine-resistant vehicles.

The method of Substance Flow Analysis (SFA) provides a helpful tool for the study of the industrial metabolism of a certain metal within a regional level, such as copper, lead etc. In this paper the flows and inventory of cobalt in China, 2008, were traced with the STAF model, and the situations of production, fabrication and manufacturing, use and waste management in China were introduced. The result revealed that the resource of cobalt in China was so poor that a large amount of cobalt material or cobalt products needed to be imported, and there was lack of recycling of cobalt resources.0

"In conventional flotation, fluoride ions selectively would react with the aluminum site on the microcline surface and produce negative charged sites for amine to be adsorbed (Smith, 1976). According to this view, aluminum site is considered as a key feature in feldspar flotation. Generally, fluoride ion has been widely used as a modifying agent in silicate flotation. Since O'Meara's patent appeared on HF -amine reagent system to selectively float feldspar from quartz in 1942, relatively few contributions have been devoted in this issue. The reason might be that the process works very well, and accordingly there is no initiative to investigate in this area. However, due to the awareness of international community to restrict using of hazardous reagents like HF, sound engineering practice to search for alternative methods, not utilizing HF, has been launched. Inspection of literature, one can find several works dealing with this issue.In this contribution, the effect of ethoxylation of long chain alcohols on the quartz and feldspar flotation behaviors was investigated for surfactants of the octylphenol polyoxyethylene family. The tests were carried out with an average of 7.5 (Triton X 114), 9.5 (Triton X 100), 30 (Triton X305), 40 (Triton X 405) and 70 (TritonX 705) oxyethylene units. Electrokinetic and flotation studies on quartz have shown that at low pH values, quartz could be floated with polyoxyethylene octytlphenols. The possible mode of adsorption of these nonionic surfactants may be suggested to be due to hydrogen bonding between the oxygen of ether and hydrogen in the free hydroxyl groups on quartz surface. It was anticipated that the selectivity between quartz and microcline would decrease as oxyethylenic chain length increases."

Solid fuel, usually coke or anthracite, is commonly added to ground iron ore fines in the pelletising process to reduce the amount of burner fuel required and the maximum firing temperature, while maintaining pellet strength and the productivity of the pelletising plant. However, the use of coke and coal contribute to the production of greenhouse gases (eg carbon dioxide) and are a source of NOx and SOx emissions. Utilising wood biomass / wood char is one methodology CSIRO Minerals is investigating as an alternative to coke and coal, as it is a renewable energy source that is very reactive, has a low ash content and the potential to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases from the iron and steel-making process. Previous work has established that charcoal can effectively replace coke in the sintering process (Lovel et al, 2005), and the following experimental work aims to demonstrate that it can also provide an adequate replacement for coke and coal in the pelletising process. The paper presents the results of an experimental testwork program comparing the behaviour of fired pellets containing traditional solid fuels and charcoal. The physical properties of the pellets are compared in terms of their compressive strength, tumble and abrasion indices and the reduction properties. A qualitative assessment of the pellet microstructures is also presented.

"The importance of coherent material balance results has long been recognized by mining and metallurgical companies. Although this is still true nowadays, various stakeholders are increasingly concerned about the origin and the accuracy of the reported numbers. The last decade has shown that most metallurgical accounting concerns can be addressed by making two important changes to plant performance monitoring practices. First, introducing data redundancy into the metal balance procedure allows the estimation of measurement errors. Second, the migration from spreadsheet-based to relational database based systems brings transparency, data integrity, traceability and auditability into metallurgical accounting. Relational databases also facilitate the production of reports that metallurgical accountants must issue routinely. Recognizing the caveats of the spreadsheet-based metal accounting method they had been applying for years, Strathcona decided to switch to a commercial relational database system in 2008. For the most part, the migration was seamless. Some challenges were raised but they could all be overcome and outweighed by benefits gained from day-to-day utilization of the system.INTRODUCTION Metal accounting (Morrison, 2008) has always been essential to high-quality corporate governance of mining and metallurgical companies. Although the importance of coherent material balance results has long been recognized, various stakeholders are increasingly inquisitive about how the reported numbers were obtained and how much accuracy can be attributed to them. This accrued scrutiny is obviously no stranger to the corporate governance tightening that happened through the years in response to outrageous accounting scandals. It is also in continuity with securities laws (such as NI-43-101 in Canada) that were passed to protect the public from other market fraud. Recognizing the importance of spotless metal accounting in their reports to the public, a group of global mining companies gave AMIRA International the mandate of developing a set of rigorous yet practical metal accounting guidelines for the mining and metallurgical industry. The AMIRA P754 project was launched in 2004 and the first version of the resulting Code of Practice was released the following year. Since then, the Code was reviewed twice and revised releases were issued (AMIRA, 2007). While some parts of these guidelines are in continuity with current commonplace practices, other parts recommend changes to inherited practices that may be significant. For example, they highlight the importance of data redundancy (Lachance & Flament, 2011) which in many operations is either already available but unexploited or achievable with reasonable efforts. These guidelines also stress the importance of state-of-the-art metal accounting systems, such as those based on relational databases, which are secure and entirely auditable by a Qualified Person. Because most spreadsheet software packages allow data and formulae to be modified at any time, without a trace and anonymously, they do not meet these requirements."

This study presents the results from centrifuge modeling experiments performed to understand the effects of temperature changes on the pullout capacity of scale-model energy piles embedded in normally- consolidated clay layers. The energy pile under investigation is an aluminum cylinder instrumented with internal strain gages and thermocouples, and its temperature is controlled using an internal electrical resistance heater. The energy pile was first heated until the temperature, pore water pressure, and volume change of the surrounding clay layer stabilized, after which the energy pile was cooled. Pullout tests were then performed on the energy piles heated to different temperatures to understand the effects of the preceding heating-cooling cycle on the pullout capacity. In addition, the clay undrained shear strength profiles were measured using push-pull T-bar penetration tests before and after heating. INTRODUCTION When a heat source such as an energy pile is embedded in a saturated clay layer, temperature changes will result in changes in pore water pressure as the rate of heating is typically faster than the rate of pore water drainage (Campanella & Mitchell 1968, Abuel-Naga et al. 2007, and Ghaaowd et al. 2016). Although all soils will initially expand during undrained heating, normally consolidated soils typically exhibit permanent contraction while overconsolidated soils exhibit expansion after sustained heating when drainage is allowed (Vega & McCartney 2015). Subsequent drained cooling typically leads to elastic contraction. Thermally- induced changes in pore water pressure and volume during transient heating and cooling may affect the soil- structure interaction of energy piles, as well as the ultimate capacity of the energy pile. This study is relevant as relatively few studies have been performed on the behavior of energy piles in soft clay (e.g., Ng et al. 2014), with most focused on the behavior of drilled shaft energy piles in stiff rock or overconsolidated clays (e.g., Laloui et al. 2006; Murphy et al. 2015; Wang et al. 2015; McCartney and Murphy 2017).

A President, soon after he is appointed, sees looming ahead of him the Presidential Address; and in something approaching despair wonders what he can possibly talk about which might hold the interest of his audience. After various casts about, it occurred to me that perhaps prospecting, and more particularly prospecting in Australia, might provide a subject. This is because, &apos;in the first place, &apos;prospecting is passing from the stage of chance surface discovery to that of systematic search applying scientific methods to theproblems involved, and in the second, it is the section of the industry with which I have been concerned through much of my: working life. As it makes an address of this sort more interesting if it includes specific reference to actual experience, I hope you will bear with me in such references to actual prospecting as I may use to illustrate the argument. Prospecting has always carried the glamour of sudden wealth. The picture of the prospector engaged, perhaps for years, in fruitless search suddenly coming on riches beyondhis hopes is, deeply etched in the Australian imagination. In few other places has the fervour of prospecting run higher than it did in Victoria in the generation beginning little more than a century ago following the discovery of gold.People arrived from overseas in great numbers. Most of them proceeded to: the goldfields. They moved in thousands from new find to new find. In &apos;so doing&apos; they determined much of the course of the State&apos;s development. The experience of prospectors led them to formulate all sorts of theories little impeded by awkward facts, to account for the apparently unpredictable occurrence of gold.The ideas which men followed, occasionally to success, and which they were prepared to back with all they had were strange and, various, many stories are told of them.

In the spring of 1999, construction commenced on the new Steelers Football Stadium in downtown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Richard Goettle, Inc. (RGI) was the successful bidder to install the specified augercast piles for the foundation package. Description - Pittsburgh Steelers Stadium The new stadium will house the Pittsburgh Steelers Professional Football Team. It is widely believed that if a team is provided with a modern playing facility, that a winning season will ensue (Not always the case). The new stadium location is on the north side of Pittsburgh on the Ohio River, and just downstream of the confluence of the Monongahela and Allegheny Rivers. The site is west of existing Three Rivers Stadium. The Three Rivers Stadium was built during the late sixties and housed both the Pirates Baseball and Steelers Football Teams. The Public Auditorium Authority elected to replace this outdated stadium with two new stadiums, one for each professional team. The landmark stadium was imploded in February of 2001.

"More efficient drilling and blasting techniques have shown measurable improvements in throughput at the Barrick Goldstrike wet grinding mill.A decrease in throughput at the autoclave, due to increasingly hard ore, was identified in early 2002. A team of individuals from the Open Pit and Process areas participated closely on the Drill-to-Mill (D2M) Continuous Improvement initiative to ensure that it would address the needs of both groups, with the target of improving throughput in future years, despite the projected harder ores. Plant studies were conducted to determine if adjustments to drilling and blasting could positively influence throughput. At the Goldstrike mill the greatest opportunity from the D2M initiative is realized on the hardest ore. Grinding throughput for softer ore, <15 kWh/st, can meet or exceed the downstream pressure oxidation requirements. Grinding throughput for harder ore, >15 kWh/st, is limited by the SAG milling capacity. Better fragmentation in the D2M ore, as demonstrated by image analysis, increased throughput 5% to 10% (25 to 50 stph) compared to the standard mining methods.Better fragmentation and a subsequent increase in mill throughput were achieved through the use of:1) Electronic caps for more precision and flexibility, as well as for allowing extremely fast shots.2) Explosives with a higher velocity of detonation (VOD), to provide for improved shock energy.3) Improved distribution of the explosives by decreasing pattern spacing.INTRODUCTIONThe Barrick Goldstrike Open-Pit group, along with the Process division, began experimenting with novel blasting technology and techniques to improve mill throughput in the spring of 2001. The morning session opened at 9:00 a.m. and was presided over by Mr. Don Ross, Manager of Mines, Kaiser Steel Corporation,- Sunnyside, Utah. The first speaker was Mr. S. W. Zanolli, Partner in Law Firm of Webster and Kilcullen, Washington, D.C. Mr. Zanolli was born and raised in a coal mining community of Fredericktown, Washington County, Pennsylvania. He was educated at Washington and Jefferson College and graduate schools of the University of Pittsburgh. He served as an infantry officer in the European Theatre of operations during World War 11. He worked as&apos; a handloader at Vesta No. 5 Mine of Jones & Laughlin during summers while attending Washington and Jefferson College. He worked at a variety of production jobs at No. 7 Mine. of Island Creek Coal Co. of Holden, West Virginia. Assigned to a variety of industrial relations assignments at Island Creek Coal&apos; Company during 1949-51, attaining position of Supervisor of Personnel and Labor Relations. Served in many industrial relations assignments at U.S. Steel Corp. headquarters during 1953.-1967, attaining a position of Personnel Director-Heavy Products Operations. In January, 1968" he became a member of the Bituminous Coal Operators Association-as Executive Vice President. This past year he went back to practicing law and is a member of the Law Firm of Webster and Kilcullen, Washington, D.C. He is married and has five children.
