In 1981, 1982, and 1983, the Bureau of Mines examined the potential for lode deposits of platinum-group metals (PGM) in the Goodnews Bay ultramafic complex, Alaska. The complex consists of the Red Mountain, Suzie Mountain, and Smalls River ultramafic bodies and displays concentric zoning of rock types similar to complexes in southeast Alaska, British Columbia, and the Ural Mountains in the U.S.S.R. Results of the study indicate that platinum is preferentially associated with chromite and magnetite in the dunite core of the complex, and palladium is preferentidlly associated with sulfide minerals in the outer clinopyroxene-rich zones. the most promising targets for PGM lode deposits are the chromite-rich dunite at the heads of Fox Gulch and Squirrel Creek and iron-nickel and iron copper sulfide-bearing magnetite clinopyroxenite and hornblende-rich rocks outward of the dunite core, also in the Fox Gulch-Squirrel Creek area. Significant placer reserves are present in the unmined, deeply buried placer ground in the lower Salmon River Valley, and also in tailings from previous dredging.

The safety record of the coal-mining industry in 1968 worsened appreciably .in fatality experience but was slightly better in nonfatal-injury experience. Work fatalities in 1968 totaled 311 and occurred at a frequency rate of 1.33 per million man-hours or worktime. The fatality total was 89 higher, and the rate of occurrence was 45 percent higher than the corresponding figures of 222 fatal injuries with a frequency rate of 0.92 in 1967. The worsened fatality record in 1968 resulted primarily from two major disasters (a single accident which results in the death of five men or more) which killed 87 men, nine in one and 78 in the second. The total of 9,639 nonfatal injuries was the lowest annual figure in complete records back to 1930. The frequency rate of 41.12 nonfatal injuries per million man-hours of worktime for 1968 was the second lowest annual rate of occurrence. The severity rate of all injuries, 10,513 days lost or charged per million man-hours, and the average severity, 248 days lost per injury, in 1968 were the worst annual data in the series started in 1944. Total worktime of 234.4 million man-hours and coal output of 553.3 million tons in 1968 were, respectively, 3 and 1 per- cent lower than in 1967.

This report describes the results of a measurement and analysis program to characterize wireless radio transmission In metal/non-metal mines over a wide frequency range from 0.2 -1000 MHz and over a variety of mine environments. Six mines were chosen based on the relative economic significance of their product to the U.S. economy. Mine types Include 01 f shale, uranium, potash, lead/zinc, copper, and silver. Particular mines were chosen so that the group would embody the most Important mining techniques. The results show that transmission at medium frequencies are optimum tor wireless mine communications, In agreement with extensive testing previously performed by the authors in coal mines, and that mine-wide wireless systems are feasible with a minimum requirement for new dedicated wiring. At least one need for such a wireless system was identified in each mine visited.

Michigan is becoming one of the important oil-producing States of the country. The amount of crude oil produced within its boundaries has increased from only 4,000 barrels in 19253/ to nearly 16 million barrels in 19935.4/ The Bureau of Mines method of crude-oil analysis and classification-indicates that the oils from the several producing fields are predominantly paraffin-intermediate-base, wax-bearing crudes. In general, they will yield 25 to 35 percent of highly paraffinic gasoline and about the t- me amount of kerosene and gas-oil combined, 7.2 to 15 percent of lubricating oil stock, and 20 percent of residuum with a carbon residue or about 6 to 7 percent. In addition, there appears to be some correlation between certain properties of the crude oils and both the geographical location and geological structure of the oil-producing areas within the State. These general conclusions are based on the analytical data presented in this report, which is one of a series of papers that record the general characteristics of crude oil from the many producing fields of the United States. This report discusses briefly the oil fields of Michigan and the characteristics of the crude oils produced from them. The analyses of 15 samples are given. Systematic practices for protecting crops from frost damage began in the United Metes more then 40 years ago when the Weather Bureau Fruit-Frost Warning Service was organized; however, various practices employed in frost protection are centuries old. Although there are areas where little doubt exists as to whether protection is needed, there are also circumstances where there is some doubt as to the need for frost protection. Many factors influence this, including not only critical temperatures but also the maturity dates of the crops relative to marketing. Critical temperatures for frost damage to trees, plants, blossoms, and fruits very with weather, plant variety and nutrition, and stage of growth. In the case of truck crops, a single night of protection from frost injury might yield big dividends with a variety of sweet corn or tomato that matures early while price is high yet be worth very little with a midseason or late-maturing variety. Consequently, it is the individual grower who must decide whether to use frost-protective measures on the basis of his returns, the quantity and quality of his crop, the marketing situation, the sensitivity of his crops to frost damage, and the frequency of damaging frost in his area.

A recent Evening Post Headline read 'Officialdoms Inertia Risking Millions in Growth Strategy'. The article beneath that headline outlined the difficulties encountered by the Government's growth strategy projects and included the paragraph 'public efforts by Government to brush up communication of the widespread nature of its growth strategy is believed to have been matched by efforts in private by some ministers to overcome their frustration at the constant delay while reports and paper work are moved between departments and through the system'. The article went on to point out that these delays could cost New Zealand millions of dollars in lost overseas exchange savings. We as responsible citizens should be appalled or at least concerned that such costly delays should or even could occur. But those on the outside of the system who spend much of their working life prodding, reminding, pleading, cajoling, even begging, the bureaucracy should be excused a smirk or a smile or even a good belly laugh. The Minister is usually a part of the bureaucracy passing judgment on someone else's proposals. This time the Government has plans of its own. Plans which it wishes to see implemented as rapidly as possible and even with the assistance of the precautionary National Development Act with its 'fast track' provisions those plans have got bogged down in the bureaucratic machine which this Government has done as much as any other to create. In the circumstances, the thought of Her Majesty's Ministers frustrated at the constant delay while reports and paper work are moved between departments and through the system is not unpleasing.

A ventilated helical boost pump was developed that can handle varying flow rates and/or solids concentrations while operating at a single rotational speed and without computer assisted feedback controls. The boost pump developed and briefly tested during this program was designed to accomodate flows suitable for a 3-in. diameter pipeline. The boost pump's ventilated design provides the automatic pressure regulation needed to meet the system's requirements for supporting transient pipeline flow.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated the properties of zinc alloys containing 25 to 40 wt pet Al and 0 to 0.7 pet Mg. Microstructures, hardness, and tensile properties were evaluated for material as extruded at 285° C, solution treated at 300° to 400° C, and subsequently aged at 100° to 200° C. The alloys without magnesium are characterized by low hardness and strength with high tensile elongation and reduction in area. It was verified that magnesium effectively retards the Zn-Al eutectoid transformation below 275° C and markedly increases hardness and strength with decreases in ductility. Solution treating at 350° C results in large grain sizes and gross embrittlement. Subsequent aging of the Zn-Al-Mg alloys at 200° C restores ductility substantially and stabilizes the structures, but strengths are considerably reduced. Combined strength and ductility properties are better for the as-extruded condition than for any heat-treated condition. There is usually little advantage in overall tensile properties from increasing magnesium above 0.1 pct.

In 1984, at the request of the Bureau of Land Management, the Bureau of Mines studied 9,600 acres of the 12,350-acre Antelope Creek Wilderness Study Area (MT-065-266) in order to evaluate its mineral resources. Within this report, these 9,600 acres are referred to as the study area. The Antelope Creek Wilderness Study Area, Phillips County, MT, adjoins the north end of the Charles M. Russell Wildlife Refuge. Considered part of the Missouri River Breaks, the area straddles the edge of a thrust fault zone that has deformed the Mesozoic strata in the west half of the area. Shale, siltstone, and sandstone of Cretaceous Age are exposed in the area. Coal beds averaging 3.0 ft thick occur in the Judith River Formation. About 0.20 million short tons of coal were mined from the Judith River Formation adjacent to the west boundary of the area; no production is known in the study area.

A complete service system was established for the monitoring of personnel exposure to N02 based upon the use of passive dosimetry. This system is structured such that minimum effort is required of the user: manufacturing, analysis, reporting, and record keeping functions are provided by the service organization. A field evaluation program was carried out in a dieselized mine to assess the performance of two passive dosimeters, the Walden GASBADGE TM dosimeter, and a tubular dosimeter developed at New York University. Side-by-side comparisons were carried out to evaluate dosimeter suitability for monitoring in the field, and to assess relative accuracy characteristics.

Crude oils from fields throughout the world are analyzed by the Bureau of Mines to determine the characteristics of the oils and their contribution to the petroleum resources of the world. Analyses are reported for 169 foreign crude oil samples from 122 oilfields in Africa, Asia, Australia, the Caribbean, Europe, North America, and South America. Tables show the geographic and geo- logic origin of the samples, names of companies that supplied the samples, annual production for the fields, general characteristics and analytical and computed data, hydrocarbon-type data, cumulative production of the larger fields, and references to sources of geological and field development information. The analyses were made by the Bureau of Mines routine method and comparisons may be made with more than 8,000 other such analyses.

The greisen-bordered quartz veins are spatially, temporally and genetically associated with a late Cretaceous granite intruding an early Palaeozoic, limestone-rich formation. Paragenetic data indicate three stages of hydrothermal mineralisation, the first typically in or within 500 m of the granite stock and showing vertical zoning between deeper Mo and higher W, the other two more abundant in the upper and outer parts of the mineralised area. Fluid inclusion and stable isotope data indicate that hydrothermal veins formed over a temperature range of 120-395 degrees C from low-salinity fluids. Early wolframite and molybdenite deposition in stage I occurred at temperatures of 300-395 degrees C from magma-derived, low-salinity, CO2-rich fluid, mainly as a result of fluid boiling and associated CO2 effervescence. Progressively larger volumes of local meteoric water entering the system led to the successive deposition of scheelite in stage I vugs, stage II base-metal sulphides and stage III fluorite-carbonates. Remobilisation of W and its later deposition of scheelite in the outer and shallower portions of the system occurred at 215-275 degrees C and stage II and III mineralisation from lower-temperature fluids that became progressively lighter in stable isotopes. Cansiderable time and effort frequently are expended to establish, with a degree of confidence, the PVT behavior of pure substances. In particular, a great deal of experimental information contributed by a number of investigators is available in the literature. The data of each investigator, although significant in themselves, cannot be used with a high degree of confidence until they are compared with the continuum of information presented by others. Current interest in thermodynamic and transport properties, for not only the gaseous state but the con-densed state as well, requires that PVT infarmation be presented for both regions. The density dependence on temperature and pressure, when presented as a continuum, is of considerable value in itself, especially since the available equations of state fail to properly account for the PVT behavior in the condensed state. For this reason and to incorporate PVT data recently presented in the literature, this investigation was carried out. In their studies concerned with the thermodynamic properties of methane, Matthews and Hurd in 1946 utilized the data of Kvalnes and Gaddy and Olds, Reamer, Sage and Lacey to establish the PVT behavim of methane in the superheated region and the saturated liquid densities of Keyes, Taylor and Smithl in conjunction with the Clapeyron equation to develop the densities for the saturated envelope. Current activity sponsored by API Project No. 44 under the direction of F. D. Rossini has led to a tabular presentation of compressibility factors for gaseous methane in the superheated region.la These values were obtained by using smoothed residuals, developed from experimental data and the Ben edict-Webb-Rubin equation,' to establish internally consistent compressibility factors for the real gas. This approach offers probably the most precise presentation of PVT information for gaseous methane to date. The PVT behavior of methane also can be represented accurately by equations of state such as the Benedict-Webb-Rubin equation or the Martin-Hoa equation.' These equations, although valuable for analytically representing the PVT behavior, lack precision in the compressed-liquid region. The PVT data available in the literature for methane were utilized to obtain reduced densities that are presented in Figs. 1 and 2 as functions of reduced temperature with parameters of reduced pressure. The critical constants utilized for methane are those reported by Kobe and Lynn." These critical values, T, = 191.1°K, PC = 45.8 atm and p, = 0.162 gm/cc, produce a critical compressibility factor, z, = 0.289. Microprobe analyses of electrum grains in some Hauraki Au-Ag deposits indicate that gold fineness is in the range of 500 - 800 (50 - 80 per cent Au), but for most deposits the range is usually narrower than this. The electrums contain minor amounts (<0.8 per cent) of copper, arsenic, antimony, mercury, iron, and sulphur. Platinum and palladium were analysed for but were not detected (detection limit 0.24 per cent for Pt or Pd). For some deposits (eg Waihi), the average fineness values for the analysed electrums correspond fairly well with the electrum fineness determined by assay during the historic mining operations.

"INTRODUCTION In a previous report3 prepared for the American Gas Association, the influence of washing coal on coke properties and on gas and by-product yields was discussed on the basis of answers to questionnaires sent to coke-oven superintendents and a review of the literature on the subject. This review indicated that the elimination of free impurities by cleaning coal improved coke quality by (a) reducing ash and sulphur, (b) decreasing clinker trouble in burning the coke, (c) diminishing cross fractures in the coke, resulting in greater resistance to breakage on handling, and less small coke and breeze, and (d) greater uniformity in chemical composition and physical properties of coke. Washing also reduced the sulphur in coke and gas and increased the yield of gas and by-products per ton of dry coal charged.This paper is supplementary to the previous report and presents some experimental data obtained with Pittsburgh bed coal from Pennsylvania and Mary Lee bed coal from Alabama.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSGrateful acknowledgment is made to F. In recent years the production of steel from directly reduced iron ore pellets has expanded rapidly. However, continued growth will depend on an adequate supply of suitable raw materials for the various commercial gaseous and solid reductant processes now in operation. Although at present Australia does not produce pellets primarily for direct reduction, there is an increasing awareness of Australia's potential role as a supplier of high grade ores for export and/or domestic use. The properties and quality requirements of iron ore pellets made specifically for direct reduction (DR) are reviewed and the laboratory techniques and test methods used at the CSIRO Division of Process Technology for the evaluation of potential DR feedstocks are described. At the present time most of the evaluation tests for DR pellets are extensions of those designed for existing blast furnace (BF) burdens. In the case of some physical parameters such as cold compression strength, abrasion index and cold strength after reduction this extension is quite satisfactory. In the measurement of parameters such as reducibility, swelling and sticking tendency, however, it is necessary to develop meaningful standardized tests so that ores and pellets can be ranked for DR performance. To do this, data from the laboratory tests and from operating plants must be correlated.

Part I of this report3/ proposed a sonic method for determining pressure, in situ, on rock pillar, arches, and other structures. The method required (1) a laboratory determination of the variation of the velocity of sound with pressure in samples of rock taken from mine pillars to establish a velocity pressure relationship for the type of rock, and (2) a measurement of the velocity of sound in the mine pillars from which the laboratory samples were taken. The pressure on the pillars could be determined by correlating the velocity in the pillar with the velocity-pressure relationship established in the laboratory. The success of this method depends on the extent to which velocity of sound varies with pressure. Furthermore, Young's modulus of elasticity, E, can be calculated from longitudinal velocity, V, by the relationship, E = V2d ...(1) where d = density. Hence, the variation of the elastic modulus with pressure also can be determined. It pointed out that this method might be extended to assist in the prediction of rock bursts, inasmuch as the rock is subjected to extreme pressure in these instances.

A 3-year study was conducted to evaluate the problems and benefits of using vegetation to stabilize tailing from a potential Minnesota copper-nickel milling operation. The project consisted of three separate investigations: a waste characterization study, a greenhouse study and a field study. With few exceptions, the physical and chemical characteristics of the tai ling were found to lie within the range of properties of Minnesota soils. The tailing lacks organic matter; is deficient in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium; and may contain elevated levels of soluble salts and heavy metals, particularly copper and nickel. Numerous grasses, forbs and woody plants will tolerate the tailing as a rooting medium. Peat incorporation and topsoil dressing provided few benefits to the revegetation process which were not provided by a fertilizer application. With fertilization, grass/legume production in the tailing was comparable to local agricultural yields. Concentration of heavy metals in grasses grown in the tailing were generally below suggested tolerance limits for plants and animal forage. Legumes tended to accumulate higher concentrations of copper and nickel, and metal uptake of most plants was positively correlated with rate of fertilization. Tailing drainage water contained elevated levels of heavy metals, and establishment of vegetation had little effect on the quantity and quality of tailing drainage water. However, topsoil dressing significantly increased drainage water volume when compared to unvegetated control plots. Copper-nickel tailing revegetation recommendations were developed.

The mineral industry of Benin contributed less than 1% of the 1977 gross domestic product (GDP), which was estimated at $500 million.' Other than limestone and salt, no exploitable mineral deposits have yet been discovered in Benin, which has been rated by the United Nations as one of the world's least developed nations. In 1977, the economy was further weakened by petroleum price increases and severe drought. The country continued to depend on foreign assistance, which averaged $20 million per year, to finance development projects. The country's first 3-year plan, which was put into operation in October 1977 after many delays, allocated more than $1 billion to projects in infrastructure, agriculture, and light industry. The most important infrastructure project was the expansion and modernization of the port of Cotonou, valued as an entrepôt port for the transit of goods to the neighboring countries of Niger and Nigeria. Plans called for an increase in handling capacity to 1 million tons of cargo annually, the improvement of port and cargo handling operations, and the upgrading of the efficiency of the Port Autonome de Cotonou (PAC) management system. The $46 million project was to be financed by a consortium led by the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) and including Canada, France, Nigeria, and Abu Dhabi. Construction was scheduled to begin in 1978 and be completed in 1980.
