Pulse-forming circuitry is described for use in explosives research that requires precise synchronization and control of events in order to investigate detonation parameters. Included are pulse generators for oscilloscope sweep control, counterchronograph actuators, and a raster-type oscillographic method for the determination of velocities of detonation that are applicable to studies on solid, liquid, and gaseous detonations. INTRODUCTION Prom time to time, requests have been received for information on electronic circuitry used in explosives work at the Explosives Research Laboratory, Bruceton, Pa. The methods used are not entirely original;4 5 6 however, modifications of earlier techniques and some novel design aspects have resulted in time-tested methods that warrant a more detailed description.

Experimental study on the strength and deformation characteristics of coal under cyclic loading provides guidance for designing coal pillar which is subjected to repeated mining influence during mining. This paper studies the strength, deformation and fatigue process of No.3 coal from Xinhe Colliery under cyclic loading by the MTS815.03 servo-controlled rock mechanics test system. The results indicate that coal is more susceptible to fatigue damage than other hard rocks. Under uniaxial cyclic loading, the fatigue failure ?threshold value? of coal is smaller than 78% of its uniaxial strength, and there is also some fatigue damage when cyclic loading and unloading experiment is carried out below the fatigue failure ?threshold value?. Axial deformation can be divided into three stages: Initial deformation, steady-state deformation and accelerating deformation. Transverse deformation can be divided into two stages: Stable deformation and accelerating deformation. When the transverse deformation begins to increase rapidly and the deformation recovers only slightly upon unloading, it?s a precursor to failure of coal. Under cyclic loading, fatigue failure develops through a process of compaction, strain hardening, and strain softening.

This report has been prepared in response to a request by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Fairbanks Alaska District Office that the Bureau of Mines quantitatively assess the potential supply of minerals from undiscovered deposits in the White Mountains National Recreation Area (WMNRA) and the western part of the North Steese National Conservation Area (SNCA) in Alaska. The assessment will be used to assist in future land-use decision-making. Resource Management Plans (RMPs) for the WMNRA and the SNCA were approved by the BLM in 1986. These plans imposed significant restrictions on new mineral development in the two areas. The level of public concern regarding these actions, especially on the part of the mining industry, has spurred BLM to seek additional information about the potential supply of minerals from the two areas with assistance from the Bureau of Mines. The assessment focuses on an area within the WMNRA and the SNCA which has been administratively closed to mineral entry. The study area encompassed approximately 1.24 million acres and included all of the WMNRA and the western portion of the North SNCA (fig. ES-1). Three quantitative estimates of the potential supply of minerals from the study area were developed: 1) For all lands in the study area, assuming that they are open to mineral entry-the baseline analysis; 2) For those lands which have been closed to mineral entry; and 3) For eleven prospective mineral activity areas, assuming that all are open to mineral entry.

Spectrum Resources commenced operations as a public listed mining company in August, 1983, with a variety of precious metal projects in New Zealand. At that time the outlook for most mineral commodities, with the notable exception of precious metals, was decidedly gloomy. Metal prices were depressed and demand forecasts were universally gloomy. Against this background the company reviewed the non-traditional metals sector to try and identify a 'new' metal with an above average demand growth and market value. Lithium, a commodity with exciting new applications in storage batteries and alloys, met both criteria. Annual world consumption of lithium is around 7000 tonnes; current prices are around $NZ40/lb for lithium metal and demand growth is projected at five to seven per cent per annum. Geothermal fluids at Wairakei and elsewhere contain anomalous amounts of lithium and in May, 1984, the Chemistry Division of DSIR was commissioned to carry out a literature survey on the possible recovery of lithium and other minerals from geothermal waters. The survey results were encouraging and the company subsequently negotiated exclusive access rights, for research purposes, to geothermal discharge fluids from the Wairakei and Kawerau geothermal fluids. Most of the subsequent investigations reported here were carried out by Chemistry Division, DSIR, under contract to the company with some assistance from the Industrial Processing Division, DSIR.

Large scale surface coal mining will be required to fill future energy demand in the United States. In realization of this long-term commitment to coal resources, the U.S. Energy Re-search and Development Administration sponsored a study to determine the costs and problems of large-scale surface coal mining. As a result of this study a series of computer models were developed that can be used by government and industry to: 1) facilitate mine design and equipment selection, 2) provide detailed analyses of mining and processing costs. Two types of models were developed: detailed simulation models, which provide detailed information on mining systems and equipment to assist in mine design and equipment selection1 and broad models, which provide a first-order evaluation of deposits and new ventures for an entire mining complex. The complete model series permits examination of surface coal mining under a variety of terrain conditions. Six different mining methods were analyzed and documented during the overall project: 1) Area stripping with draglines, 2) Area stripping with draglines, extended bench, 3) Contour stripping with draglines, 4) Area stripping with shovels (loaders) and trucks, 5) Mountain top removal with shovels (loaders) and trucks, 6) Multiple dipping seam mining with shovels (loaders) and trucks. Each major operation in the coal mining pro-cess is represented in these models so that the best methods and equipment may be selected and 50 that the impact of such selection will be reflected in estimates of capital investment, operating costs, and coal price. Individual models allow the user to separately analyze overburden removal, overburden drilling and blasting, coal drilling and blasting, coal loading and hauling, coal preparation and handling, land reclamation, and premining, facilities, and administrative expenses. Because it is impossible to cover all the models in this paper, only the detailed simulation models representative of the technique "area stripping with draglines," are described. The Fort Union Strippable Coal Resource Region, one of eight test cases, is used as an example to describe the models.

This report examines practical considerations in longwall support selection that have evolved from Bureau of Mines ground control research. The scope of discussion includes trends in support selection, analysis of shield designs, performance testing, and an examination of support and strata interaction theories and their relevance to in situ support loading. Application recommendations are made for two-leg shields. four-leg shields, and chock-shields. Two-leg shields account for 67 pct of the current active longwall installations and are used in a variety of applications. Automated control systems are likely to continue to grow in utilization. The next major change in shield design is likely to be the application of wider supports. The most effective method of performance testing longwall shields is by controlled displacement of the canopy relative to the base. Controlled force application does not control the load transfer through the shield and may not produce maximum loading in all support components. Theories of estimating support capacity based upon a detached roof block that must be maintained in equilibrium by the powered support are being challenged by concepts based upon the equivalent stiffness of the total ground supporting system.

Theoreticians in soil mechanics have been pursuing a probabilistic approach to the factor of safety of an embankment or darn for the past 10 years. The motivation for this work is in contrast to the current practice of deterministically computing a factor of safety and treating it as an absolute with no regard to its inherent statistical variability. Basic to the probabilistic approach is the selection of an appropriate statistical model to represent the histogram or probability density function (PDF) of the factor of safety values, Rather than simply assuming which PDF is appropriate, the Bureau of Mines collected data at two waste disposal embankments for consideration, This report addresses three candidate models, using the techniques of nonlinear curve fitting, and identifies the "best" model. A propagation of error formula for estimating the variability of Fellenius? factor of safety is also discussed.

A summary of a proposal to develop a 20 000 tpa underground gold operation in a Forest Park. The environmental constraints are severe and affected the mine development planning and choice of mining method. The mine will use trackless methods to access the narrow 1.5 m ore shoots, and to mine ore by cut and fill methods. The use of Microscoop and CT 1700 HE electric LHDs for mucking, together with special drilling attachments for drilling, is central to efficiency and small Kubota diesel haulers will be used for carrying ore to surface.

THE origin of spontaneous combustion in collieries is, of course, chiefly due to bad system in laying out the pits, unclean workings, insufficient ventilation, and neglect in damming off works after they are exhausted of the main coal. This is particularly indispensable in the Richmond field, because it is difficult and dangerous here, on account of the inferior roof, to remove the last vestiges of coal ; and we are compelled also to retain all the slates and bands, as far as possible, in the pit, to help fill up, although such material is liable to fire. This, however, can be prevented to a great extent, as mentioned below. I am satisfied that the only system of working this thick coal is by cross-cutting (Querbau, ouvrage & travers) or working in benches, as practiced in France (Creusot, Rive de Gier, St. Etienne), in Silesia (Kiinigsgrube), which I have used as far as it is practicable in an old pit, almost torn to pieces by former workings. Modifications may, of course, be needed, even in the same pit, on account of irregularities in the seam. I am also satisfied for economical reasons (on account of the heavy cost for timbering) that pits here ought to be worked upwards, even if it requires a longer period of time to win the coal, and a greater outlay of capital to commence with. The various saddle-shaped " troubles " making natural minor basins in the main basin aid in the execution of this plan. A pit worked once ought to be worked out clean, given up, and dammed off forever. If sections of proper height are assumed, according to the required amount of production for a certain period of time, they ought to be worked out and filled in as much as possible, dammed off, and ultimately allowed to fill up with water, in order to protect the upper works in future from fire in the gob below. This I consider indispensable, because we may not be able profitably to fill in all the ground. To do so we have to use the waste of the mine, although it is liable to fire in time. In using this stuff, it ought to be surrounded by walls of rock not liable to take fire, laid firmly in clay, the gob being in the middle, and firmly covered and packed with clay on top. In

Introduction Zircon is a natural occurring mineral and may exhibit natural low level radioactivity. It contains trace levels (90 to120 pCi/g and 110 to 115 pCi/g respectively or 3.3 to 4.4Bq/g and 4.1 to 4.3 Bq/g) of naturally occurring radioactive uranium and thorium. This mineral is often found in a suiteof minerals (rutile, ilmenite and monazite) Due to the overlap in physical properties of monazite (containing 4–7% thorium) with some of the zircon (slight magnetic susceptibility) it often contaminates the zircon, adding to the levels of thorium in the product. Hazards associated with the products from zircon and its processing is inhalation of respirable dust (generated by milling) containing radioactive uranium and thorium which may cause cancer of the lungs. Legislature regulates the transport, use, workplace environment exposure and storage of radioactive material. In America the general regulation for the unlicensed use of low levels of radioactive materials limits the concentration to 500 ppm (U plus Th). Europe (IAEA) specifies a limit of10 Bg/g (Bequerels per gram) on the parents for transport only which is a higher level of U+Th. Companies selling into these markets need to comply with these regulations and certification is therefore required, not only of the major constituents determining the price, but of the U and Th levels as well. Exceeding the limits for U and Th may result in material being returned to the country of origin. However, for the analyst the requirement is to analyse for these elements throughout the production process as well as the analysis of the ‘tails’ that is returned to the mine area. This requires a wide range of concentration to be analysed. Methods of analysis A wide variety of methods exist for the analysis of U and Th in a range of matrices. (Table I) All these methods have been used with varying degrees of success in terms of accuracy. Overall precision for the different techniques varies from 5 to 25% relative. Time to produce results from these methods vary from a few minutes to several days. The Production Chemist is expected to produce between5 and 10 analyses per hour for process control purposes. A suitable technique that fits this requirement is X-Ray Fluorescence. Both Wavelength Dispersive (WDXRF) and Energy Dispersive X-Ray (EDX) instruments are suitable. X-Ray analysis in general has a few major advantages over competitive techniques. •It is fairly simple to set up and interferences are known and easy to correct •It has multi-element analysis capabilities •Clean spectral lines for U and Th (in zircon specifically) •Uncomplicated and easy to measure background •Low detection limits (3 to 5 ppm) •A very high degree of precision •Sample preparation is uncomplicated and fast (pressed powders and fused beads). In Zircon (ZrSiO4) processed sands the matrix is constant(>99% ZrSiO4) and the background is thus essentially constant. Standards As with any other comparative technique XRF analysis relies heavily on the quality of the standards used. Assuming proper set-up and operation of the instrumentation as well as consistent sample preparation, accuracy is determined by the quality of the initial calibration standards. An experimental investigation has been made of gas-driven slug displacements in a system of high gas saturation to evaluate the process for use in a California reservoir. Fluid compositions, temperature, pressure and core permeability duplicated reservoir conditions as closely as possible. The temperature was above the critical of the slug materials. The slug composition required for 100 per cent oil recovery in the linear flow systems was found to agree with that determined from equilibrium phase studies. A qualitative theory for the slug displacement of two-phase systems is proposed and found to be in general agreement with the observed flow behavior. The theory predicts that the length of the reservoir fluid-slug transition Zone will increase with increased initial gas saturation and decrease with increased oil swelling accompanying the composition change from reservoir oil to the critical composition. The precipitation of small amounts of an asphaltic phase during the formation of the transition zone had no adverse effects on the flow behavior of otherwise miscible systems. INTRODUCTION Despite the large number of recent publications relating to oil recovery by miscible displacement, little information is available concerning the behavior of crude oil-natural gas systems at conditions likely to be encountered in field application. The laboratory data reported here were obtained during an investigation of the possibility of using a gas-driven LPG slug in a partially depleted California reservoir. Seven gas-driven slug displacements employing slugs of different compositions and sizes were made in 26- to 27-ft long sandstone cores. The equilibrium phase behavior of the systems was also determined. The features of primary interest in this study are the following. 1. Data were obtained on the displacement of reservoir fluids at reservoir conditions. 2. A high gas saturation existed in the long cores at the start of the displacements. 3. The temperature of the studies was above the critical of the slug materials. 4. A comparison between the flow behavior and equilibrium phase behavior, as illustrated by a pseudo-ternary phase diagram, is afforded for a system of considerable complexity. THEORY Phase Behavior The use of the pseudo-ternary phase diagram to illustrate the phase behavior in miscible displacements has been discussed by Clark, Schultz and Shearin. Sie-vert, Dew and Conley and Arnold, Stone and Luffel' have presented both phase equilibrium and flow data for true ternary systems. For the true ternary, the application of the theory is straight-forward; for a reservoir system represented as a ternary, the theory undoubtedly gives a qualitatively correct picture. One purpose of this investigation was to see if the pseudo-ternary phase diagram could be used to predict with reasonable accuracy the conditions necessary for miscible displacements with actual reservoir systems. The Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency(MIGA) is part of the World Bank Group, and has as its mission the facilitation of foreign direct investment by providing political risk insurance (guarantees) to foreign investors and lenders. As a development institution, MIGA is required to ensure that the projects that it insures will bring development benefits to the host country. Demonstration of this includes review and analysis of the environmental and social soundness of a prospective investment. Environmental guidelines and policies developed by the World Bank Group are important components both in analyzing the environmental and social soundness of a prospective investment and in risk management. MIGA has recently formalized and adopted environmental assessment and disclosure policies. The approach taken by MIGA to environmental review of investments and implementation of these policies is described in this paper.

This report summarizes the work performed under USBM Contract No. H0155155. The purpose of this work was to obtain operational data on retrofit noise control treatments suitable for use in coal preparation plants. This data was obtained by evaluating the performance of four categories of noise control treatments which were installed in a commercial coal preparation plant. The four categories of treatments were resilient screen decks, resilient impact pads, chute liners, and curtains. The selection, installation and initial evaluation of the treatments was documented in the Volume I report issued in 1977. This Volume II report summarizes the results of the long-term evaluation of the original treatments, as well as some additional tests which were conducted on elastomer-clad (resilient) screen decks. This project demonstrated the feasibility of a number of retrofit noise control treatments, some of which also proved to be quite durable over the long term.

Economic gold mineralisation was discovered at Round Hill by Homestake NZ Limited in 1984 and was subsequently put into production by Macraes Mining Company Limited (MMCL) in 1990. The total mineral resource in 1990 was estimated at 41.4 Mt @ 1.42 glt at a 0.7g/t cut off, for 1.8 Moz of gold. Since project start up the mill has been upgraded twice to increase throughput and reached its current capacity of 3.2 Mtpa. At 31 December 1996, a total of 16.2 Mt of ore at average grade of 1.73 g/t has been excavated, yielding 655,000 oz of gold. MMCL began exploration along the Hyde Macraes Shear Zone in 1994. Since 1994, exploration has been successful with the discovery of over 3.5 Moz of gold. The resource now stands at 110 Mt @ 1.46 g/t gold for 5.1 Moz. This success has led to a planned expansion of the processing capacity to 9 Mtpa with the building of a new 6 Mtpa processing plant.

As part of its research and development activities concerning coal mine operational/emergency communications sys terns, the Bureau of Mines commissioned several contractors to conduct electromagnetic (EM) noise studies and measurements that would aid the development of improved coal mine operational/emergency communications systems. The bulk of the noise studies and measurements were conducted in 1971. The Pittsburgh Mining and Safety Research Center (PMSRC) inherited the responsibility for monitoring the electromagnetic noise activities by mid-to-late 1971, and initiated a review and evaluation of the current and planned electromagnetic noise work. Arthur D. Little, Inc., (ADL) was asked by PMSRC to assist it in performing this review and evaluation by placing stronger emphasis on certain tasks of existing Contract No. H0122026. This technical memorandum report presents the findings, conclusions, and recommendations of our review and evaluation of the electromagnetic noise measurements of the five contractors we were asked to examine. Our review and evaluation effort included meetings and telephone discussions with technical staff of each contractor; serving as Technical Discussion Leader of a "Contractor's Round Table Meeting on EM Noise, Surface and Subsurface, Operating and Non-Operating Mines" called by the Bureau of Mines; examination and discussion of contractor reports and relevant open literature; sample verification calculations; and the documentation of our findings, conclusions, and recommendations by this report.

As a consequence of the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969(PL91-173), the Bureau of Mines (BOM) entered into a contract with Ocean Energy Inc. (OEI) to develop, fabricate, install, and evaluate a permissible lighting system for use on a longwall coal mining operation. The program schedule is shown in Figure 1.1. The proposed regulations are contained in Appendix A. The initial part of the program involved a survey of existing longwall lighting practices in Germany and England and an evaluation of a variety of lighting components on a mockup of a longwall mining operation that was fabricated under this program. Visits made to German and British mines uncovered major differences in lighting level requirements, permissibility aspects, size, and operating constraints which identified wide disparities and essentially eliminated from further consideration any known imported lighting devices for meeting the higher lighting levels and standards proposed for US coal mines by the Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration (MESA). The longwall mockup provided use¬ful information regarding the amount of illumination required, physical size and shape of lamps, light distribution problems, cable routing, use of connectors, signaling, glare, and other important factors unique to the lighting of low coal longwalls.

As a part of its overall program of coal carbonization, the Bureau of Mines is studying the coking properties of coals that may be used for metallurgical purposes. The objectives of this study were given in detail in a previous report.2/ The inherent suitability of coal for metallurgical use depends primarily on (1) chemical composition, (2) preparation characteristics, and (3) carbonization behavior. The first two factors, as well as the available reserves, are considered in selecting coals for carbonization tests. According to the estimate of reserves by Dowd,3/ the recoverable coal in Floyd County in beds 28 inches or more thick, in thousand tons, is as follows: [ ]

This volume contains a summary of the results of past analyses on U.S. Bureau of Mines Contract No. 80122061 which are relevant to electromagnetic location in mine rescue situations. The analytical results indicated that detection of a trapped miner equipped with a special transmitter is feasible in most situations. Location of the miner by surface measurements is also generally feasible within certain errors. The feasibility of miner detection and the accuracy of miner location have been examined theoretically for a wide variety of situations. Agreement with experimental results is generally good in cases where measurements are available. Personnel involved in the investigation include J.R. Wait (Principal Investigator), D.A. Hill (Co-Principal Investigator), K.P. Spies, A.Q. Howard, and Lana Slusher (Administrative Assistant).

This report covers research which is directed toward the measurement and control of underground mine diesel emissions. The report consists of three separate reports presented as Sections 1, 2, and 3. Section 1 "Emissions Measurement Apparatus" (EMA 1) discusses the selection and evaluation of instruments and procedures to be used as part of a diesel tailpipe emissions dilution and measurement apparatus. The instruments selected for gaseous pollutants are the Energetics Science Inc.* E.S.I.) 2000 for CO, the E.S.I. 7000 for NO and N02, and the Fuji ZFP5 for C02. Particulate matter is presently measured with the Celesco 1013 Smoke Opacity Meter. The raw exhaust concentration of one of these constituents is used Lo calculate the dilution ratio. Either a modified high range E.S.I. 2000 CO instrument or a Daco Products Cobra C02 instrument can be used, but neither is totally satisfactory. The study also indicated that it may he possible to increase the sample collection time from 15 seconds to the total 30 seconds over which the engine can be loaded without increasing the probability of damaging the vehicle hydraulic systems. Section 2 "The Effect of Fuels, Catalysts and a Filter Trap on Drift Pollutant Concentrations" discusses research in the Mine Air Quality Laboratory. A Wagner ST5D LHD with a Deutz F8L714 engine was used to compare three exhaust aftertreatment devices and a muffler-only system. The effect of these four systems on CO, C02, NO and N02 and on total, soluble, sulfate, and solid particulate matter was measured in the drift and on the LHD. The filter trap successfully reduced particulate matter for both fuels without significantly increasing the concentrations of any of the other constituents. The PTX catalyst was effective in reducing CO, and soluble particulate, but significantly increased N02 and solid and sulfate particulate matter. The Oxy Cat catalyst tested didn't seem to he working on the gases, and it significantly increased sulfate, soluble arid solid particulate concentrations. Section 3 "Diesel/Coal Particulate Matter Characterization by Laser Raman Spectroscopy" covers basic research on a method for determining the percentage by weight of diesel particulate on a filter containing a diesel-coal mixture. Signal-averaged Raman spectra provide the necessary precision. The method developed is non-destructive and uses as-received filters requiring no sample manipulation. Particulate with diesel contents in the range of 10 to 50% by weight have been analyzed with accuracies better than 6%t of the mean value. A number of samples containing diesel-coal mixtures were characterized by the procedures developed and the results are analyzed in light of various spectral and other system variables including coal rank and form and diesel engine operating conditions.

This report describes the total effort that went into developing environmental test criteria for general mine instrumentation. The project was a two-phase effort. Phase I consisted of research and mine visits to develop an environmental profile for mine instrumentation. The profile was translated into general requirements and then into test requirements. A review of existing government and commercial specifications was performed to determine if they matched mine instrumentation test requirements. Finally, a set of environmental test procedures was developed for the testing of mine instrumentation. Phase II consisted of selecting and purchasing sample mine instrumentation and subjecting them to the previously developed tests. The purpose was twofold: (1) to evaluate the criteria developed for use as an instrumentation test document and (2) to determine the effects of the various criteria on a representative sample of both proven and newly developed instrumentation. The test criteria were then modified, based on the results of the testing, and are listed therein.
