A constitutional diagram for the Ta-W-Re alloy system is presented. Rhenium dissolves in the complete range of solid solutions between tungsten and tantalum up to 48 wt pct in tantalum 'to about 30 wt pct in tungsten. Intermediate x and u phases only are found. X-ray diffraction and fluorescence, metallography and melting-point measurements were employed. THE constitution diagram of ternary alloys of tungsten, tantalum, and rhenium for temperatures above 1000°C is reported in this paper. Alloys in this system rich in tantalum and tungsten are of interest for high-temperature applications, and those rich in rhenium for electronic applications. No ternary phase diagram appears to be available in the literature. The three-component binary diagrams have been previously established1-3 and the present ternary data are consistent with these. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES Commercially pure tantalum (99.7 pct), rhenium (99.99 pet), and tungsten (99.9 or 99.95 pct) powders were purchased from Fansteel Metallurgical Corp., Chase Brass and Copper Co., and Fansteel or Westinghouse Electric Corp., respectively. These powders were pressed without binder and arc-melted under helium. The preparatory and analytical techniques employed were identical to those used for the Ta-Re system investigation carried out in this laboratory.324 These included X-ray diffraction and metallographic phase identification, X-ray fluorescent and wet chemical analyses, solidus determinations and heat treatments in a resistance-heated tantalum-filament vacuum furnace. For microstructural examinations standard mechanical polishing techniques were used through diamond laps. Polished speciments of all compositions were etched by swabbing with 4 parts HI?, 4 parts HNO3, and 1 part H20. Since the microstruc-tures of alloys containing one or two phases closely resembled their counterparts in the respective binary systems, typical examples are omitted in this presentation. In all the alloys examined, it was possible to observe the number of phases present. Particularly when there were small amounts of one phase involved, it was possible to identify it only by a combined conclusion based on X-ray diffraction, position of an alloy in a composition series, and the phase rule. A total of 100 different alloy compositions was arc-melted and studied in the as-cast condition metallographically and by X-ray diffraction. Specimens of each of these compositions were heat-treated at 2680, 2530, and 2020°C for 1, 2, and 4 hr, respectively. Those which were treated at 2020 were given a preliminary homogenization treatment at 2500°C for 1 hr. Specimens of 25 alloys were heat-treated at 1200o C for 168 hr. Solidus temperature measurements were made by the detection of incipient melting in eighteen alloy compositions. The metallographic and X-ray diffraction results are summarized in Table I. Graphically, this information appears in the isothermal plots of Figs. 2 and 3. Within the accuracy of the experimental methods, two such plots are sufficient to locate these data, since the results for 1200°C were similar to 2020 and those at 2530 resembled 2680

Investigations of world wide coal face strata control practice, the study of theoretical calculations and detailed engineering analysis have been combined to design and select a powered roof support suitable for use in conjunction with the extraction of 4.5-m (14.7- ft) of the 7.5-m (24.6-ft) thick Warwickshire Thick Coal Seam. The interface between geotechnical criteria and engineering design has been closely considered along with the following 3 important factors: Firstly, the need to further improve strata control and operational characteristics whilst producing a wall integrated overall face design. Secondly, to enable the supports to be rapidly transported from face to face in roadways driven at the minimum size for operational requirements. Finally, to provide hydraulic power, automatic control and monitoring systems which will improve operations reduce manpower requirements and improve management information. Clear design requirements were determined in order to allow selection on a commercial basis. A method of tendering is described with the subsequent analysis and selection process. In the event oversupply of coal in the UK resulted in the order not being placed. Brief consideration has been given to supports suitable for reserves to be mined In a few year's time where there is potential for extraction well in excess of 4.5-m (1 4.74.

One of the lithium minerals most widespread in the earth's surface is spodumene (Li2O-A1203-4Si02) a lithium aluminium silicate. For some time, deposits of this mineral were known to exist in the Black Rills of South Dakota, but it was only quite recently that Hess4/ pointed out the great magnitude of the low-grade e deposits it s in North Carolina. The theoretical lithia (Li20) content of spodumene is 8.04 percent. The only other minerals with such high lithia content are the phosphates, but these occur only in pockets and are not in extensive deposits5/. Actually, however, the lithia content in spodumene is never found to be this high, being nearly always below 7 percent for the pure mineral, and part of the lithia is apparently replaced by other alkalies.

"The CANMET SPOC project aims at inducing progress in process evaluation and optimization by developing user oriented software based on state-of-the-art theory. The present work is the result of a joint effort by CANMET, Noranda Mines and Université Laval to develop two computer packages: one (RTD) to calculate the residence time distribution that best describes the material transport through the mill, the other (FINDBS) to estimate the rate of breakage and distribution function of the population balance model in a ball mill. The RTD package can handle data from various experimental methods (impulse or complex tracer feed, with or without recycling, etc...). The FINDBS package provides options for the functional description oj both model parameters Band S. The full detail of the methods and programs appears in a users guide. The program capabilities and several sample runs are presented.IntroductionSimulation of mineral dressing operations by computer has been largely contained within academic and research circles and has not yet gained a status of routine practice in the ore and coal industries. It is however a matter of time before process simulators are available on every process engineer's desk to assist process optimization tasks, flowsheet design and professional training. The CANMET SPOC project (Simulated Processing of Ore and Coal) was initiated in 1980 to assist the Canadian industry in integrating computer-based methodology for process evaluation and optimization(1). Software development, documentation and transfer is one of the main priorities of the project which will mature in 1985 by releasing a complete package of manuals and programs covering sampling, material balance computation, unit modelling, flowsheet simulation and optimization . This paper is a condensed description of a typical project element in its 1982-1983 state of development. The required methodology for ball-mill modelling and simulation was consolidated an d merged to other project elements during a joint study under contract financed by CANMET and Noranda Mines Ltd . The first part of the study dealt with documenting experimental methods and software for ball-mill computer simulation. Université Laval GRAAIM (Goupe de Recherche en Automatistion Appliquée à l'Industrie Minérale) acted as sub-contractor for this part of the study(16,17). A second part dealt with applying the model calibration techniques to a large industrial data base and is reported elsewhere(2,18,19)."

Loveday (National Institute for Metallurgy, Johannesburg, Republic of South Africa) - The paper and subsequent technical note' describing a method of determining the parameters of the three-parameter size-distribution equation developed in the paper were read with much interest. This equation was also used at National Institute for Metallurgy (NIM) to describe size distributions in grinding tests, because it was necessary to have a single equation to describe the size distribution at any time during a test. A graphical method also was used to determine the three parameters, and the use of this method as an alternative to Professor Harris's latest method is discussed here. As part of the Bureau of Mines program to reduce U.S. reliance on foreign suppliers of strategic and critical metals, research was conducted to improve technology for the recovery of critical metals from hardface alloy grinding waste, a form of superalloy scrap. This report describes a hydrometallurgical process that demonstrated on a laboratory scale that 79 pct of the chromium, 97 pct of the cobalt, 99 pct of the manganese, 99 pct of the nickel, and 90 pct of the tungsten could be recovered in chemical form from hardface alloy grinding waste. The process involved deoiling the grinding waste, followed by chloride-based dissolution of the deoiled material. A high-grade calcium tungstate (CaW04) product was recovered from the resultant leach residue by caustic leaching and precipitation. Iron, cobalt, man-ganese, and nickel chlorides were sequentially recovered from the leach liquor by solvent extraction. Amine extractants were used to extract the iron, cobalt, and manganese; decanal oxime was used to extract the nickel. Market-grade cobalt chloride (CoCI2), manganese chloride (MnC12), and nickel chloride (NiCl2) products could be produced directly from the resultant strip liquors. The final raffrnate was a relatively pure chromic chloride (CrCI3) solution that compared favorably with commercial solutions.

Four taconite plants were studied to establish the extent of hazard to plant personnel which exists based on long-term exposure to noise. The criteria for evaluation include the 90 dBA and 85 dBA summations of partial exposures. Data from extensive interviews were used to determine all work stations or locations which employees occupied and how much time they spent in ach location in a typical working day. Noise level measurements at every designated location were then made. By means of a computer program, these time and noise level data were us d to find the optimum noise reductions which would be required throughout each plant to meet both noise criteria. Subsequently, each plant was examined in detail so that the apparent sources of noise for each of the locations requiring noise reduction could be delineated. In tabular form, this report presents the hazardous locations for each plant, the existing noise level, the optimum noise reduction which would be required to meet the current and proposed laws, and the sources of noise which produce the existing noise level.

Interpretation of pressure build-up data obtained in the conventional manner has often been difficult because of the deviation from theoretical behavior. Major causes of this deviation have been attributed to damage and afterflow, and to fluid redistribution in the wellbore which, in extreme cases, can result in a pressure hump in the early portion of the build-up curve. Theoretical investigations show that bottom-hole pressure is definitely influenced by phase redistribution in the tubing column during surface shut-in tests, and that the magnitude of the effect is sensitive to the producing gas-oil ratio and stabilized rate of flow in the well. For field experiments a wire-line tubing packer, which can be run in the tubing against a stabilized flow rate, was developed for bottom-hole shut-in tests. By use of this bottom-hole .shut-in method, pressure humps previously observed in surface shut-in tests were completely eliminated and the effects of afterflow minimized. Analog and digital computer studies have been made to obtain theoretical curves for comparison with field curves, and remarkable agreement between the results of bottom-hole shut-in tests and theoretical curves has been obtained. INTRODUCTION Pressure build-up data from shut-in wells have been used by the petroleum industry to determine the permeability of the formation, to estimate wellbore damage, to evaluate the static reservoir pressure and to speculate reservoir volume. Calculation of these factors is based on methods of analysis developed for theoretical systems whose build-up curves have a charac- teristic shape when the wells are shut-in at the sand faCe.1,2,3,5,8,10 However, field curves obtained by conventional surface shut-in methods do not always exhibit this characteristic. Such factors as stratification, rock heterogeneities and irregular reservoir geometry can cause the character of a build-up curve to deviate from that predicted by theory for a simple system. In addition, all field build-up data are affected by the methods utilized in obtaining the measurements. Conventional surface shut-in techniques allow two effects to occur which contribute directly to the manner in which pressure builds up at the sand face. The first, afterflow, has been recognized for some time and methods are available for estimating the magnitude of its effect and for correcting its influence.' The second, phase segregation in the tubing column after shut-in, has been reported only recently and appears to exert a considerable influence on the character of field build-up curves.!' In extreme cases, phase segregation can produce "pressure humps" in the early portion of the build-up curve. Such curves have been considered anomalous and have defied analysis. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss the effect of phase segregation in the tubing string during build-up and to present a bottom-hole shut-in technique for obtaining field build-up data which minimizes the influence of afterflow and eliminates phase segregation effects. It will be shown that reliable reservoir information can be calculated from build-up measurements obtained using this method, even though conventional surface shut-in tests on the same wells yield anomalous data. This document presents a description of the results of a project aimed at producing a broad description of current mining training programs and an evaluation of their effectiveness with respect to reducing mine injuries. Aggregate training and injury data were used to evaluate the overall training effort at 300 mines as well as specific efforts in twelve categories of training course objectives. From such evaluations, recommendations were derived with particular emphasis being placed on identifying program characteristics that tend to be associated with effective training. Recommendations were also formulated with reference to role changes in industry and government interaction with respect to training programs, new or additional training programs, changes in the types of course materials and training methodologies, and recommendations concerning new areas for investigation.

The works recorded in this Test Report have been performed by Rade Roncar - Electrotechnical Institute of Zagreb, SFR Yugoslavia in collaboration with Bureau of Mines. The main objective of these investigations was to investigate the possibility of fabrication of thin-walled square enclosures of satisfactory safety factor in accordance with requirements of effective technical regulations. The results and the investigations can be divided in three main fields: - investigations of thin-walled enclosures with the view of determination of pressures causing technological deformations before performing tests in accordance with effective applicable regulations, - finding the safety factor by means of tests of metal-foam pressure vents, - comparison of enclosures with and without pretreatment by technological deformation.

In 1940 Schuhmann1 showed that the size distribution of a comminuted material can be expressed by the following empirical relationship: y = 100 (|f [i] where y is the cumulative percentage of material finer than size x, k is a size modulus, and a is a distribution modulus which is constant for a given material and machine. During the past few years, considerable emphasis has been given to the investigation of the extent of size reduction resulting from the expenditure of mechanical energy in crushing and grinding. In order to determine the potential availability of alumina to feed U.S. aluminum smellers, the Bureau of Mines evaluated 39 domestic mines and deposits of bauxite, alunite, and high-alumina clays and found that substantial increases in alumina prices would be necessary before nonbauxitic deposits could become competitive with bauxite. As part of the study, a price-tonnage relationship was developed indicating the quantity of alumina that could be produced from known deposits at various alumina prices and at a 15-pct discounted cash flow rate of return on the required capital investment. All capital and operating costs were calculated in August 1980 dollars. The domestic bauxite reserve base comprises three operating bauxite mines in Arkansas containing some 15.6 million metric tons of recoverable alumina (A1203). Ferruginous bauxites, clays, and alunites fall into the subeconomic category of identified aluminum resources, which, at the demonstrated level, contain over 4,000 million metric tons of alumina that are estimated to be recoverable. Analyses indicate that, at the demonstrated resource level, a total of some 15.6 million metric tons of alumina, all from three active Arkansas bauxite mines, is recoverable at a 1980 price of $0.12 per pound ($264 per metric ton) of alumina. A price of approximately $0.26 per pound ($573 per metric ton) of alumina would be required for production of the total U.S. resource. Thus, unless new technological breakthroughs occur that could make alternate sources of alumina competitive with bauxite, U.S. dependence upon imported bauxite will continue to increase.

This report on tungsten in Ouray, San Juan, and San Miguel Counties, Colo., is one of a series describing results of studies on the tungsten potentialities in Region III, Bureau of Mines. The San Juan tungsten deposits occur in an area of 250 square miles, centering near the common corner of Ouray, San Juan, and San Miguel Counties (fig. 1). Field work supporting these studies was done in May 1954. Bureau of Mines reports prepared from investigations made during World War II and under the Defense Production Act of 1950 were reviewed.

1. Domestic Production and Use: In 1979, 12 companies operated 32 primary aluminum reduction plants, with 3 firms accounting for 64% of production. Washington, Oregon and Montana accounted for 32% of the total production; Gulf Coast States 20%; other Northern States 32%; and other Southern States 16%. Based on published producer prices output of primary metal in 1979 was valued at over $6 billion. Aluminum consumption by 25,000 firms was centered in the East Central United States. Of aluminum consuming industries in 1979, building accounted for about 24%; packaging 23%; transportation 22%; electrical 11%; consumer durables 8%; and other uses, 12%.

WHILE mining engineers have been searching in far corners of the country and of the world for hidden wealth there has grown up around us in nearly every city great wealth-producing mines calling for the investment of hundreds of millions of dollars and yielding products now sold for over half a billion dollars yearly-largely unknown and almost wholly neglected by mining engineers. But this neglect is explainable and excusable. They are industries of very recent origin-practically the growth of the last 25 years. They are in a very large measure the result of tremendous developments in engineering construction and the rapidly expanding use of portland cement concrete for structures of every description. Concrete as a material of construction is going through an evolution very much as did cast iron and other metals used in engineering; and this phase of the industry should appeal to the imagination of metallurgical engineers. At first iron was iron-a material of uncertain properties, owing both to small differences in chemical composition and in methods of manufacture. By successive steps iron was studied and knowledge of its properties developed-the striking effects of very small percentages of other minerals and of various heat-treatments.

Data for the mines and mills are presented separately, as shown in the list of tables. The Bureau of Mines is authorized to send questionnaires to the nonmetal mining industry for their voluntary submission of injury and employment data. As the information submitted contributes largely to the promotion of safety in the industry, special effort has been made to ma e these questionnaires as complete as possible.

Beginning in 1972, fully grouted resin bolts were used in underground mines. An estimated 20 million resin bolts will be installed in 1980 owing to their apparent support improvement in most roof-bolt applications. Inorganic cements were tested to replace the resin at a lower cost while retaining the advantages of a grouted bolt. Although other inorganic materials were considered, all but portland and gypsum cements were rejected for reasons of availability, performance, or cost. Portland and gypsum-type cements were tested by the Bureau of Mines to select a fast-hardening, low-cost material that would anchor a roof bolt adequately to meet safety standards. An alpha-gypsum cement, accelerated with potassium sulfate, was selected as the best material because it had adequate pull strength at a desired set time of less than 5 minutes and was readily available.

IN the winter of 1902, while occupying the position of mining and examining engineer for the Mountain Copper Co., Ltd., of Keswick, Cal., I had occasion to discuss with the General Manager, among other things, the question of the enormous waste of sulphur in smelting cupriferous, pyrite ore, and to cast about for means to utilize this waste or to render the fumes innocuous to vegetation. The decreasing rate of production of California farms, the consequent need of fertilizers, and the opportunity thus offered to utilize large quantities of sulphuric acid in the manufacture of superphosphates naturally brought the subject to the practical and commercial side of phosphates. I was informed that the company had made efforts to find phosphates in the West, without success. I advised as a start placing inquiries for phosphate deposits on the Pacific coast in the current mining ,journals. This was done, with the result that in January, 1903, from an advertisement in the Mining and Scientific Press we got track of a deposit in Rich county, Utah, through T.J . Wilson, of the Southern Pacific railroad in San Francisco. As soon as snow in the mountains would permit, in May, 1903, I undertook an examination of the property, with the result of recognizing the importance of the find, in spite of its lack of facilities for transportation at a commercial figure. On June 15, 1903, I concluded my report by saying, "This may be one of the world's deposits of phosphates." On Nov. 17, 1903, I concluded my report for the season in the following words : " I have now no hesitation in saying that I believe the Carboniferous formation so largely developed in the Wasatch mountains of Utah and the mountains of the Great Basin will prove to be one of the greatest storehouses of phosphoric acid in the world."

This research study was performed on a case study basis and can be divided into two parallel thrusts: electrical and thermal energy conservation. Energy consumed annually in mining and refining operations represents about 6% of the 80 quadrillion Btu's consumed nationally. In the electrical portion of the study, five areas were addressed: optimal dispatching of on-site generation, high-efficiency motors, conductor selection, power factor correction, and high efficacy lighting. In the case study mine which has a multiple unit on-site generation system, optimally dispatching units can save significant energy. The other four methods are difficult to justify on a retrofit basis due to capital costs. In the thermal portion of the study, a thermodynamic analysis was performed on the reverberatory smelting process possible areas of energy conservation were identified as radiation and convection heat losses from the furnace arch and the dumping of high energy content smelting slag. It has been shown that materials currently available can provide the means of reducing heat loss from the reverberatory furnace. It has also been shown that a significant amount of energy may be recovered from the slag. However, these are both subject to further study and validation.

The Haldane gas-analysis apparatus used by the Bureau of Mines is patterned after the device developed by Haldane 4/ and differs from it only in structural modifications that have been added to facilitate operation and simplify construction. The apparatus was developed to permit determination of carbon dioxide, combustible gases, and oxygen with a degree of accuracy not attainable with apparatus of the types ordinarily used for the analysis of fuel gases, flue gases, and similar mixtures. The Haldane apparatus is used by the Bureau of Mines chiefly in the analysis of air samples collected in coal and metal mines and other underground workings and is applied also in the analysis of many other types of gas mixtures when accurate determination of certain constituents is desired.
