New Zealand has been a significant producer of gold for over a century. Total recorded production is over 850 tonnes. There were three major periods of production: the first and biggest was between 1860 and 1880, the second was between 1895 and 1920 and the third was between 1930 and 1945. After 1945 gold production fell continually until 1980 when the major upward adjustment in gold price led to renewed interest. There have been important new developments in each of the known gold-rich areas: Westland, Otago and Coromandel and exploration for gold in these areas and in previously unprospected regions has reached unprecedented levels.

Although not immune from the problems affecting the U.S. economy generally, the mineral industry in 1991 contributed nearly $300 billion in the value of processed materials of mineral origin. Supporting this contribution, the Bureau of Mines continued the research and analytical programs highlighted in this annual review. Featured in 1991 were such relatively new programs as minewide monitoring applications in ground control and advances in processing of ceramics and composites, along with more traditional research into health, safety, and mining technology, minerals and materials science, and environmental technology. Under Bureau sponsorship, a National Minerals Policy Forum brought together some 200 executives from industry and Government concerned with minerals policy to begin a dialogue on developipng a policy statement on current minerals issues. A major feature of the forum was the keynote address by Secretary of the Interior Manuel Lujan, Jr.

Most previous studies of coal flotation utilized chemically pure reagents. Since such reagents are not available in quantity, a study of various wmmercially available reagents as frothers was undertaken. Flotation procedures similar to those used in a large number of commercial coal flotation plants were employed. The reagents used were compared on yield-selectivity-wst basis. The selectivity was found to be relatively constant with yields above 70% but the reagent cost varied greatly. The types of reagents available were compared. In the past, a number of papers have been written on the use of various reagents as coal flotation frothers. For the most part, these have been an attempt to correlate the intrinsic chemical and physical proper- ties of the reagents or reagent groups to the floata-bility of various fine coals. Because of the type or nature of evaluations made, chemically pure reagents were normally used. Generally, these reagents are unavailable in commercial quantities. Therefore, the results obtained with these reagents were usually limited in usefulness to the plant operator or metallurgist. This paper presents the results of a study in which commercially available forms of various reagents were used as flotation frothers. Flotation procedures which would conform in general to those employed in a large number of commercial coal flotation plants were utilized. The objective of the test was to compare these reagents on yield-selectivity-cost basis, that is, 1) the yields obtained, 2) the ash levels obtained and 3) the reagent cost relating to these results. RECORD production of crude petroleum, lime, crushed marble, and talc highlighted the mineral industry of Alabama in 1963. Among the States, Alabama ranked second in the production of bauxite, third in the production of scrap mica and native asphalt, and fifth in iron ore. The mineral industry of Alabama was dominated by mining and processing coal and stone, the manufacture of cement, and the production of crude petroleum, which together comprised 86 percent of the total value of production, compared with 82 percent in 1962. The iron-ore industry continued to decline; in 1959 the value of iron ore produced was 12 percent of the total State production value; in 1960, 11 percent; in 1961, 10 percent; in 1962t 8 percent; and in 1963, 5 percent.

[In the examination of bentonitic clay suspensions used for oil-well drilling fluids3/ (and for other purposes, such as a core binder for foundry sand) it is important to have comparative tests for evaluating them. A satisfactory clay for these and other purposes should have the property of forming what is commonly called a "gel," but the measurement of this property has been a real problem. To date the solution has not been satisfactory, and some of the difficulties are considered in, this, paper, which describes a simple form of instrument (identified as an eykometer) for measuring the yield point under hydrostatic conditions of non-Newtonian clay suspensions, including those muds that are thixotropic. An oil-well drilling mud serves several functions, many of which depend on the "gel" characteristics of the mud. Among the more important functions are: (a) To plaster the sides of the hole to prevent caving of the walls; (b) to prevent the loss of the circulating fluid out of the hole by seepage; (c) to carry sand and cuttings out of the hole to the surface as they are formed by the rotary drill; and (d) when circulation of the fluid stops for shut-down or other unavoidable cause, to hold the cuttings in suspension by the setting up of the gel, thereby avoiding the difficulties that result when these cuttings are allowed to fall through the fluid and pack at the bottom of the hole.]

Three complete connector assemblies and six separate contacts were submitted to a series of tests to establish the connectors permissibility and compliance with U. S. Bureau of Mines research Contract #H 0110423 D.C. portion. Test Procedure TPC-0118 was coordinated, and the test plan approved by the Bureau as fully complying with the intent of the contract for the direct current connectors. The components and connector assemblies have been demonstrated in testing that they meet or exceed all the requirements of the test procedure.

"The Manibridge Mill is unique in its treatment of relatively high grade nickel-copper ore because in the mill design are included one 10' diam. x 10' Maxwell cell, and three 12' diam. x 12' tank cells. These large cells are used as rougher-scavenger cells. Three 8' diam. x 8' tank cells as well are used for cleaning and recleaning of the tank cell concentrate.Flexibility of flow is the main criterion in the tank cell circuit. Targets from these cells are a high grade nickel-copper product with a minimum of talcose gangue.The operation of the tank cells has been encouraging and they have performed well with both low and high grade heads, yielding a high grade concentrate product.Manibridge Tank CellsDescription:The tank cells at Manibridge consist of one 10' x 10' Maxwell cell, three 12' x 12' tank cells, and three 8' x 8' tank cells. The four large cells are currently being used as rougher scavenger cells. The three small cells are used as cleaner cells.Both sets of tank cells consist of Denver steel tank and Super Agitator Mechanisms with steel beam super-structures. The agitator mechanism has a totally enclosed ball bearing spindle housing with a cold rolled steel shaft, and a stanclard standpipe with adjustable collar.The air rings for the tanks were fabricated by Nelson Machinery. Both large and small cells have injection rings with equally spaced air holes in the bottom centre line of the ring.Air is supplied to the tank cells by a Dresser Clark low pressure air blower.The following is a table of pertinent data on the tank cells:"

1.0 PROLOG Since the "end" of the Cold War, revolutionary new research and commercial remote sensing capabilities are being developed that will dramatically change the way we map the earth and address its environmental problems. The technology challenge is not the growth of new environmental remote sensing technologies themselves. It is, rather, how these new innovative observing systems can be accepted and used to the benefit of both the regulatory and the mining communities in the light of present concerns about unknown risks of discovery and liability. The land mass of the Asia and Pacific region comprises 11 million square miles or about 15% of the total Earth's land area. The bulk of the region is contained on the Asian continental land mass. Australia, the world's largest island or the world's smallest continent, alone is almost as large as the continental United States. The islands of New Zealand, New Guinea, Borneo, Sumatra, and Honshu are among the largest in the world. Collectively, they constitute a land area of 1.1 million square miles or an area about one-fourth the size of the United States. The countries in the Asia and Pacific region represent some of the most vibrant economies in the world. Japan is undisputed as one of the world's leaders in manufacturing and commerce. Hong Kong and Singapore are significant both as entrepôt and banking centers. The economies of Australia, the Republic of Korea, and Taiwan compare favorably to the level of the industrialized countries in western Europe. Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand have maintained strong economic growth during the past two decades. All these countries in the Asia and Pacific region collectively constitute a significant bloc as to raw materials production and consumption, as to manufacturing, and as to world trade.

The Michigan Dept. of State Highways makes extensive use of geophysics for subsurface surveying which would be applicable for uses in other fields. Examples of resistivity surveys are given which include a proposed large-volume excavation with suggestions for land use after excavation, subsurface evaluation for engineering design, and a subsurface survey for land appraisal. An example of a combined refraction seismic and resistivity survey is shown where the resistivity is used for outlining the unconsolidated soils, while the seismic method is used to outline bedrock and to evaluate it for rippability. A refraction seismic survey at the bottom of bridge caissons for evaluation of bedrock uniformity and a rehtive aid in assessing rock strength is reported. These past several years have been a period of unprecendented construction and commercial expansion. Vast private manufacturing complexes and government road, power, and office projects are being built or are in planning stages. Nearly everywhere, municipalities are expanding outward and upward. Many towns are developing into cities and many cities are displaying new skylines, and the building boom shows little sign of slowing down.

A study has been undertaken to establish the relationships between the O&K wedge test cutting resistances and the geotechnical parameters of rock materials in the context of bucket-wheel excavator operation. Prediction equations were formed to estimate the cutting resistance from the geotechnical parameters by multiple regression analysis. Aluminum production in the Pacific Northwest has a new potential for expansion and increased stability of operation. This new potential results from greater availability of power; lower freight rates on alumina and aluminum; good market prospects for the metal, including western aluminum market expansion following a decline in defense requirements in the 1950's; and possibility of developing bauxite deposits in the Pacific Basin as well as other mineral resources. INTRODUCTION This is a report of a special study by the Bureau of Mines of the primary aluminum industry of the Pacific Northwest. It outlines developments relative to the United States as a whole.

Magnetite pellets were simultaneously reduced and indurated on a laboratory scale in order to determine the effects of temperature, induration time, degree of metallization, and sulfur content upon the physical and chemical properties of prereduced pellets. The reductants were commercially-pure tank gases. Among the findings were these: 1,100° C is the minimum temperature that will produce acceptably hard pellets using carbon monoxide as the reduc-ing gas. Prolonged treatment time improves the pellets' crushing strength, but the rate of improvement falls off sharply after 2 hours' induration. At 1,120° C, 75-percent metallization produces the maximum crushing strength; there was no corresponding peak at 900° or 1,050° C. Sulfur in the furnace atmosphere lowers the required induration temperature. A few tenths of 1 percent sulfur in the pellet increases the sintering rate of metallic iron in pellets by forming a liquid FeS phase that facilitates iron transfer.

The production of oil and gas in Arkansas is confined to two distinct and widely separated regions of the state; namely: (1) South Arkansas in the Gulf coastal plain, where 49 fields-many containing two or more reservoirs or pools-yield oil, condensate and gas from beds in the Cretaceous and Jurassic, and (2) Northwest Arkansas, a part of the Arkansas Valley, where only dry gas is produced in 21 fields from sandstones of Pennsylvanian age. Exploration during the year 1945 centered largely in these two producing regions, but some of the geophysical surveys were made and wildcat drilling was done a considerable distance outside these regions.

The importance of producing more oil from known petroleum reserves has placed increased emphasis on the application of secondary-recovery methods. Recently published reports3 4/ describe the results of waterflooding in Roane and Pleasants Counties, W. Va. (see fig. 1.) This report describes the Barron Kidd Oil Co.?s Santee waterflood project, Maxton sand, Burton field, Church district, Wetzel County, W. Va. (See fig. 2.) The Federal Bureau of Mines hopes that these reports will stimulate interest in improved waterflooding techniques, thereby discouraging premature abandonment of oil leases.

Thickening of mine tailings is a relatively new concept for their sustainable management. Removal of water from the tailings to form a paste instead of slurry disposal decreases environmental and geotechnical concerns. As the use of these pastes is relatively new, their behaviour requires investigations such as liquefaction and seismic stability, freeze-thaw behaviour, consolidation and leachate characterization. Slurry density, ore type, particle size distribution, specific gravity and environmental conditions can all influence paste characteristics. In this paper, the effect of the above-mentioned parameters is examined. New developments in water removal, and additives (such as flocculating agents, cements, organics, fertilizers, etc) leading to low moisture content tailings are reviewed, and the potential for thickening to enable sustainable management of mine tailings is discussed with respect to storage volume requirement, use of virgin land, consolidation of the tailings, land use after decommissioning.

Suite à la publication du « Guide sur la gestion des parcs à résidus miniers » en septembre 1998, les membres de l?industrie minière ont appliqué les éléments de gestion du Guide, permettant ainsi une amélioration continue des opérations. En février 2000, l?industrie minière a indiqué le besoin d?établir des lignes directives plus spécifiques pour l?opération sécuritaire des parcs à résidus. Dans cette optique, l?Association Minière Canadienne a publié, en septembre 2002, un Guide pour l?exploitation, l?entretien et la surveillance (EES) des parcs à résidus miniers. Suite au développement du Guide et à son application sur plusieurs sites miniers, il apparaît que la mise en oeuvre d?un Manuel ESS des parcs à résidus miniers permet : ? d?établir les responsabilités des intervenants; ? de s?assurer que les critères d?opération sont appliqués; ? de mettre en oeuvre le plan de déposition des résidus et de gestion de l?eau; ? de rencontrer les normes et exigences environnementales; ? de définir un programme d?entretien et de surveillance des ouvrages; ? d?identifier les risques et de mettre en oeuvre un plan d?intervention d?urgence; de démontrer une opération diligente.
