The Belize economy recorded modest growth during 1980; the growth of the gross domestic product (GDP) in real terms was between 1% and 2%. At current prices, the 1980 GDP reached $108 million2. This output was largely attributed to the performance of a few industries, mostly nonminerals. Such performance improved significantly the balance of payments situation by reducing the deficit from $19 million in 1979 to $4 million in 1980. The rate of inflation was an estimated 18% in 1980 and would have been greater if not for a conservative monetary policy and price control on a number of essential items. Expert earnings increased $43 million, or 50%, from the 1979 level. After increasing more than 25% in 1979, imports increased only 6% in 1980 to a level of $141 million owing to the decline in investment and stabilization of petroleum prices. The balance of trade deficit was $9.8 million in 1980, a marked improvement from the 1979 level of $45.1 million. The mineral output for Belize accounted for only a fraction of 1% of the GDP. Such activity was limited to the production of limestone, marl, and sand and gravel, all of which were primarily used in construction of the Northern Highway between Orangewalk and Belize City. Mineral resources are deficient or nonexistent in Belize for the majority of metals and nonmetals, although the Government and others continue to believe that petroleum must exist in Belize. The proximity to Mexican oilfields and the growing finds in the Peters area of Guatemala support this expectation. This report, sponsored by the U.S. Bureau of mines, presents the results of an examination of available safety assessment methods and their applicability to the mining industry. Standard safety analysis procedures were evaluated for relevance to the mining industry and mire operators' needs. The major safety concerns and needs of mine operators were identified through telephone contacts and a visit to a mine site. Safety assessment methods recommended for use by the mining Industry were also investigated for potential adaptability to a user-interactive computer system. Several methods were determined to be Immediately transferrable to the mining industry; these techniques are described in a user's handbook produced as part of this project. The handbook gives detailed instructions on appropriate application and utilization of these methods. Other techniques will require further development before they can be effectively transferred to the mining Industry. These methods, their advantages, disadvantages and resource requirements are described in the final project report. Recommended system safety analysis techniques facilitate an evaluation of total mine system safety and a determination of safety-related interactions among systems within a mine. The application of these methods to the mining industry could result In reductions in both the frequency and the consequences of mine accidents.

This paper describing mining practice at Morenci, Ariz., is one of a series of articles on mining method, and practice in the various mining districts in the United States. At present (1929) practically all the mineral production in the Morenci district is from the Humboldt mine of the Morenci Branch, Phelps Dodge Corporation. The mining method used is adapted to the type of ore body being exploited; it has been developed by adopting methods used elsewhere and making necessary changes to fit local conditions. Improvements in current practices are still being made.

In 1969, the Congress of the United States declared that "the first priority and concern of all in the mining industry must be the health and safety of its most precious resource - the miner," Therefore, Public Law 91-173, Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969, was enacted. Since haulage accidents account for a high percentage of coal mining accidents, Section 314e, ?Hoisting and Mantrips,? was included in the law. This section states: "Each locomotive and haulage car used in an underground coal mine shall be equipped with automatic brakes, when space permits. Where space does not permit automatic brakes, locomotive and haulage cars shall be subject to speed reduction gear, or similar devices approved by the Secretary which are designed to stop the locomotive and haulage cars with the proper margin of safety."

As part of ongoing deep-ocean mining research, hydraulic transport systems as well as status of deep-ocean mining systems are reviewed in the aspects of manganese nodules and crusts from 8006,000-m depth. The emphasis of the investigation of hydraulic transport is placed on the shape effect of particles on the pressure gradients and flowrates. Series of tests are being conducted to study the lift characteristics of a 2-phasevertically upward hydraulic transport of 2 types of small solid particles in a PVC pipe of 1-in (2.54 cm) diameter: irregular-shaped silica sands and equivalent spherical glass beads. Pressure drops and mass as well asvolumetric flow rates were measured by electromagnetic(EM) flowmeter and mass flowmeter. The particle sizes used are 8-10 mesh. The results in turbulent flow range of 101045Re show that pressure gradients or friction factors are smaller for the spherical beads than the sands. The larger the concentration of the particles are, the larger the pressure gradients become. The larger the particle concentration is, the less the effect of particle shape on pressure gradients becomes. The shape effect is greater for the minimum particle transport velocities than for the settling velocities.

"The development of the Centrifugal Mill jointly by Chamber of Mines (Johannesburg) and LURGI GMBH (Frankfurt) had been described by L. Kitschen e.al. during the 14th IMPC at Toronto in October 1982. Further investigations, using a 55 kW semi-industrial mill, installed at LURGI's Research Laboratories, were concentrated on efficiency and wear in grinding.The test results showed, that efficiency increases when increasing the ball load between 60 and 80 % by volume. Furthermore, the efficiency is increased by speeding up the mill, thus increasing the centrifugal force to up to 14 times the force of gravity. Applying these findings to grinding of a Canadian iron ore spiral concentrate, a saving in grinding power of 30 % was experienced, when comparing with ordinary wet ball milling.Investigations of several shapes of the grinding chamber cross section and linings and several types of materials showed, that no increase of liner or ball wear will occur compared to conventional ball mills when choosing suitable lining patterns. 1. DEVELOPMENT OF THE CENTRIPUGAL MILLThe centrifugal mill was developed with the aim of finding a grinding unit that can operate at a higher power concentration than the conventional tumbling mills.LURGI felt the necessity for such a mill in connection with a hydrometallurgical process developed at the beginning of the seventies, which incorporated an activating grinding step as one of the essential process features. At that time, the Chamber of Mines in Johannesburg was investigating possibilities of underground wet grinding and preconcentration of gold ores aiming at a decrease of mining costs by reducing the quantities, especially for mines operating at depths up to 3600 m, by changing over from rope hoisting to hydraulic transportation systems. After the Chamber of Mines had initiated the development work on its own, in 1974 a cooperation between the two organisations was started."

THE following paper has been prepared with the object of placing on record in the Transactions some facts concerning the present condition and future prospects of the coal industry of Illinois. In presenting it, the writer wishes to say that a considerable amount of the material contained is taken from the publications and records of the Illinois Coal Mining Investigations, the annual Coal Report of the State Mining Board, and the work of the State Geological Survey. Coal Beds and Mining Methods According to the latest maps of the State Geological Survey, there are only 19 of the 102 counties of the State some portion of whose territory is not within the borders of the coal measures. If outlying areas in Calhoun and Whiteside Counties are considered, the number is reduced to 17. This does not mean that all of the 85 counties that are partly or wholly underlain by coal measures will become producers, as there are some portions of the State in which the coal does not occur in beds of such thickness as to warrant the hope that it can be mined. The mining of coal is widespread, however, for in 1916 there was production from 51 of the 102 counties of the State. There seem to be no cases in which operations will be limited by depth, as none of the coal measures lie at depths much greater than those at which it has been proved that coal may be profitably mined in this field. In fact, the deepest shaft reaching a bed of bituminous coal in the United States is located in this State at Assumption, where coal only 3 ½ ft. (1.07 m.) thick is worked at a depth of 1004 ft.. (306 m.) The coal beds occur in the form of a basin which is deepest along a line extending through the central part of the State and bearing a, little west of north. The northern, western and southern borders of this basin lie within the boundaries of the State, but on the eastern side the Illinois field is continuous with the Indiana field. The Upper Waimangaroa mining permit is part of the Buller Coalfield and lies on the eastern side of the Stockton-Denniston Plateau. The mining permit area is estimated to contain a total in-ground coal resource of 58 million tonnes, contained within 13 separate coal resource .blocks. The coal is Bituminous High Volatile B rank with export potential as semi soft coking or thermal coal. The Northern Opencast mine is the first mine proposed for Upper Waimangaroa and consists of the three resource blocks at the northern end of the permit area. The highwall of the mine will cut into the Mt William Range resulting in overburden cover of up to 150 metres in some areas. The ability to rehabilitate the area after mining was a major consideration in the design of the mine. The Northern Opencast area has been geologically mapped, extensively drilled and effectively modelled using Vulcan software. Three distinct coal seams are present and the mineable in situ resource is estimated at 8.7 million tonnes of which approximately 7.1 million tonnes is likely to be recoverable. It is proposed that this resource will be mined using opencast methods and the void will be backfilled with overburden. The life of the mine is at this stage estimated at 19 years based on an annual production of 500,000 tonnes at 1.8% sulphur and the Upper Waimangaroacoal will be blended with low sulphur coal from the Greymouth Coalfield to meet export specifications. The Northern Opencast area contains a range of native flora and fauna and physical features which make it an environmentally significant area. Mining will totally modify the area, thus an effective rehabilitation scheme is an integral part of the mine plan. Various rehabilitation methods will be used, and wherever possible, the backfilled areas will be rehabilitated so as to resemble the original area as closely as possible.

Much attention in controlling blast vibrations has been centred on the probability of causing damage to structures in the area adjacent to where blasting is carried out. In most cases these structures are residential properties and the effect of the vibrations on the occupiers has not been studied to any great extent. This paper looks at the sources of disturbance caused by blasting and their psychological effect. A comparison of ground vibration levels for compliance is examined within the framework of structural and human response.

There are many large rhodonite-bearing veins containing manganese in the Eureka-Animas Forks area of the San Juan Mountains in Colorado. The Sunnyside vein is the largest known vein in the area. As observed on the surface, the vein is mineralized over 8,000 feet and attains a maximum width of 200 feet. The average width of the vein and its branches and ramifications is 58 feet in the area that was mapped in detail. The weighted-average analysis of surface and underground samples from the northeastern extension of the Sunnyside vein is 8 percent manganese. Most other known veins in the area have a similar manganese content. The Hidden Treasure vein lies southeast of the Sunnyside-No Name-Mastadon vein. The weighted average of the analyses of surface and underground samples from this vein is 13 percent manganese. Exposures of the Scotia-Silver Chord vein are visible over a strike length of 4,000 feet on Treasure Mountain. Diamond-drill holes show that the vein contains 10 percent or more manganese to a depth of 400 feet. The vein has an average width of 28 feet. The Independence vein is exposed on the surface for a distance of 600 feet and has an average width of 6 feet. Three cut samples taken across the vein had an average content of 20.7 percent manganese. Sampling of the outcrops of eight veins in the Placer Gulch area also indicates manganese. Numerous other veins cropping out in the surrounding area are similar to the outcrop of the Sunnyside vein system mineralogically and are worth investigating.

This report presents a complete coverage of results from Bureau of Mines preliminary research and the field application of explosive fracturing techniques to prepare oil shale for in situ recovery of shale oil. Small-scale surface tests were conducted to determine the feasibility of using a nitroglycerin-base explosive for creating rock fractures. Prior to underground testing, surface and near-surface tests with liquid explosives showed that explosions in sheetlike layers simulating underground fractures would propagate effectively. Successful surface experiments were conducted using layers of explosive placed between glass plates and explosive-saturated sand confined in small-diameter metal tubes. The tests in glass-plate reservoirs and metal tubes demonstrated that nitroglycerin would detonate and the explosion would propagate in cracks as thin as 1/32 inch and through distances up to 12 feet. In a shallow field test, nitroglycerin was detonated in a vertical crack in limestone and produced extensive fracturing. Explosive fracturing tests were performed in oil shale formations on seven sites near Rock Springs, Wyo. The procedures included (1) displacing and detonating nitroglycerin in natural or hydraulically induced fracture systems; (2) detonating nitroglycerin in wellbore shots; (3) displacing and detonating nitroglycerin in induced fractures followed by wellbore shots using pelletized TNT; and (4) detonating wellbore charges using pelletized TNT. The research on oil shale formations demonstrated that nitroglycerin displaced in a natural or hydraulically induced fracture would detonate, and the explosion would propagate through the explosive-filled fracture. Shooting a pattern of wells in oil shale at 100-foot depth with wellbore charges of pelletized TNT developed a satisfactory interwell fragmented zone. Tests performed on other sites at depths to 385 feet caused fragmentation of rock around the wellbore and provided interwell communication. Fourteen methods used to evaluate the extent and degree of fragmentation in the explosive fractured oil shale are discussed.

The Carbon Disclosure Project (the pre-eminent global initiative for institutional investor collaboration on climate change) groups the business risks (and opportunities) related to climate change into four categories: 1. Regulatory risks from tightening legislation (and opportunities for companies that can make the carbon market work for them), e.g. rising costs for carbon and energy-intensive processes. 2. Competitive risks & opportunities generated by a possible decline in customer demand for carbon/energy intensive products (and opportunities from a consequent rise in demand for efficient / low carbon products). 3. Reputational risks from perceived inaction on climate change (and benefits to those perceived to be ?solutions providers?). 4. Physical risks from changes to climatic patterns, e.g. asset damage from extreme weather events; project delays; water scarcity; resource risks as certain crops become no longer viable in certain areas and new supply chains become necessary; and potential human and socio-political impacts. All of these are already having repercussions for businesses in certain sectors and geographies. The understanding of specific impacts of climate change is still evolving but it is clear that climate change will have a material impact on the value of many businesses, either directly or indirectly. Many commentators and analysts consider that rising energy costs are likely to represent the most direct and immediate investment risk that climate change and the resulting regulatory responses will create for business in the near term. However, it is already possible to identify numerous examples of competitive and reputational risks and opportunities that are leading to significant value creation or destruction in business: the success of the Toyota Prius; the rush by the UK?s leading supermarket retailers to ?green? their brands; and the surging fortunes of companies involved in the manufacture of renewable energy generation equipment, are all manifestations of this trend. In addition, the potential physical impacts of climate change are also making themselves felt in certain sectors: an example is the Australian wine industry, suffering after an extreme and prolonged period of drought. THE PROJECT This paper describes a project undertaken for a multinational mining company to examine the physical risks from climate change across its international business operations. The study addressed 163 components of the business and included operating sites (mines, smelters, and refineries), key transport routes (road and rail) and port links. The inclusion of the transport networks and ports is extremely important; key transport routes (e.g. a key railway link) may often be impacted (e.g. by flooding) far more than individual sites due to their large geographic exposure and multiple potential failure points. Extreme weather events causing loss of life and major economic damage continue to be front page news. According to the World Meteorological Organization, January to July 2007 ?was marked by record weather extremes in many regions across the world.? Inevitably, the associated phenomena are starting to impact business and investments, not so much as deal breakers, but in changing the parameters of risk management and the approaches required to devise mitigation measures. EXAMPLES OF EXTREME WEATHER EVENTS No one event can be presented as directly attributable evidence of climate change, however climate change projections suggest that the frequency and severity of many extreme weather events can be expected to increase in a warming world. In August 2003, a heat wave struck Europe, with temperatures as high as 42°C (108°F). As summer temperatures in much of northern Europe rarely exceed 30°C (86°F), the area was unprepared for the disaster, and many thousands of deaths occurred. In August 2005, Hurricane Katrina caused catastrophic damage along the Gulf Coast of the United States, forcing the effective abandonment of south-eastern Louisiana (including New Orleans) for up to two months and damaging oil wells that resulted in increased oil prices. Katrina killed over 1,800 people and caused at least $75 billion in damages, making it one of the costliest natural disasters of all time. This was followed in September, by Hurricane Rita which left 119 people dead along the U.S. Gulf Coast, causing $9.4 billion in damage. In January 2006, hundreds of people were killed when Russia, Eastern Europe and Scandinavia experienced the coldest weather for decades. In summer 2007, dramatic floods in the south central region of England, UK left 350,000 people without drinking water and many without electricity. Transport infrastructure was severely disrupted; combined with floods which occurred earlier in the summer in Yorkshire (North England), the damage is estimated to total over £2 billion. ASSESSING RISKS FROM CLIMATE CHANGE To date, only a minority of companies have attempted to quantify the risks from climate change. However, investors are seeking greater disclosure of climate change related risks and opportunities and it is expected companies that can demonstrate they are prepared for climate change will attract higher market valuations. Climate Change Threats A variety of climate change threats were examined for their potential to have a potential measurable impact on the mining company?s business operations. Those considered most significant were included in the study and are shown in Table 1 (see Appendix A). Certain threats can be considered as being cyclical in nature and the future predictions may suggest a change in the frequency and severity of such events (e.g. storms/hurricanes, rainfall, drought). However other threats are associated with a gradual change over time (e.g. loss of glaciers, loss of permafrost, sea level rises). A slightly different approach is needed to address this differing nature of the threats, as described subsequently. Climatic Regions Much of the research and data associated with climate change is collected and reported on a regional basis. An example of the climate change impacts predicted for a number of climatic regions is shown in Table 2 (see Appendix A).

The Virginia Center for Coal and Energy Research has been developing models of wireless signal propagation in underground coal mines since 2007. The current mine propagation modeling software, named COMMS, is able to locate potential broadcast points for underground wireless mesh systems and estimate their coverage. COMMS utilizes programmed routines to calculate necessary values to both quantitatively and qualitatively solve and analyze predicted coverage areas. The program approximates the spatial relationships that are encountered, such as ventilation regulators, belts and other obstructions. Using this model for propagation allows the optimal communications node locations to be calculated, by using lessons learned from current installations and experience with the new technology. In addition, the optimization can be calculated by checking all possible combinations of broadcast locations. This paper compares these optimization calculation methods. The ability to solve a mine?s communication network provides a pre-installation mine network design map, creates coverage maps of the mine and allows planning for future communication activities

Golden Cross is a volcanic-hosted, low-sulfidation, epithermal Au-Ag deposit in the Hauraki Goldfield. Irrespective of the rock type (andesite versus dacite), hydrothermally altered wallrocks are enriched in K, Rb, As and Sb around Au-Ag mineralised veins of the Empire vein system and stockwork. Sodium and Sr are strongly depleted around these veins, whereas Mg and Fe are locally depleted. Calcium and Si display mixed behaviour, varying from unchanged to depleted to enriched. Other elements including Al, Ti, Mn, Zr, Y, and Nb show little change or are immobile during hydrothermal alteration. Element enrichment and depletion trends are directly related to the degree of alteration and the alteration mineralogy. Addition of K and Rb and converse loss of Na and Sr in intensely altered wallrock surrounding veins corresponds to the replacement of igneous plagioclase by hydrothermal adularia. Sodium and Sr occur in moderately altered rocks on the margins or in æhard barsÆ that contain plagioclase. Locally, elevated Si concentrations and depletion of Mg adjacent to the Empire vein system reflects intense silicification of the wallrocks and the replacement of mafic minerals by quartz rather than by chlorite. The geochemical zonation patterns at Golden Cross are very similar to those at the McLaughlin deposit California, and shallow levels of the active Broadlands Ohaaki geothermal system. Therefore, determination of K, Na, Rb, Sr, and Ca enrichment and depletion patterns provides insight into alteration intensity and mineralogy that is complimentary to traditional trace element analysis of As, Sb, Hg, Au, Ag, Zn, and Pb used in the exploration of shallow level (< 500 m) epithermal Au-Ag deposits.

The objective of this paper is to analyze the evolution of the strategic drivers of the mining sec-tor over the last half century, which has been guided by a varying and expanding list of motivations. While companies cannot survive for long unless they are making profits, the strategic drivers of the industry have gone far beyond profits since at least the mid-1970s when environmental concerns began to be taken seriously. For the most part, these forces have followed global trends and public opinion, but they have been shaped and magnified by the significant, often dominant role that the mining sector plays in many economies. While the mining sector used to be primarily motivated by the first pillar of sustainable development -i.e. the economics pillar-, in the 1970s the second environmental pillar became an important factor in decision making, and in the 1990s the third social pillar emerged as a major driver.1 The entrance of new strategic drivers has also had considerable impact on technological and organizational developments in the mining industry; however, technological changes, driven by cost reduction considerations, have in turn impacted the strategic drivers of the industry, resulting in the need for further technological and organizational developments.

An experimental test program being conducted at Colorado State University and involves the study of the behavior of water saturated sands under shock and explosive loadings. The study is being conducted to evaluate potential blast induced changes in dynamic soil properties, soil shear strength loss (liquefaction) and densification of water saturated sands under single and multishock loadings. This paper presents testing and measurement objectives, and the equipment and instrumentation developed to load, measure, record and analyze the transient and long term soil behavior. The laboratory shock facility is capable of generating multi-shock pulses with milli-second rise time, peak stress amplitudes of up to 35,000 KPa (5000 psi), peak particle velocity of 5000 cm/set and peak acceleration of 10,000 g. The field explosive facility subjects saturated soil to controlled explosive loadings. Of major interest is the soil strain and water pressure, both during and after the passage of the stress wave, as a function of peak particle velocity, peak strain, loading rate, soil density, initial confining stress and the number of loadings. Based on data obtained to date, soil densification is due to consolidation following liquefaction.

Annual requirements of uranium to fuel the 441 currently operating nuclear reactors in the world is 170 million pounds U3O8 (65,385 tonnes U). 2005 global production was 108 million pounds (41,595 t U), of which only 2.7 million pounds U3O8 (1,039 t U), was produced from US uranium deposits. US nuclear utilities represent 26% of the global nuclear capacity but only obtain 2.5% of their supply from US uranium mines. Since 2002 annual global production increased from 93 million pounds U3O8, a 15% increase and the US production increased from 2.3 million pounds to 2.7 million pounds, a 17% increase. Reasonably Assured Resources (RAR) of 12,332 million pounds U3O8 (4.7 million t U) are reported from a wide variety of countries and types of uranium deposits. This RAR suggests that there are significant global uranium resources potentially producible at a price of $50 per pound U3O8 ($130 per kg U). Table 1 shows the distribution of global uranium resources. This table, prepared from historic data maintained by the World Nuclear Association, does not include some areas of the world that are currently considered to contain significant resources of uranium such as Mongolia. Table 1 suggests that the United States contains the fourth largest uranium resource in the world with 890 million pounds U3O8, behind Australia, Kazakhstan and Canada in resources that are producible at a price of $50 per pound U3O8 ($130 per kg U). Within the US, the states that demonstrate the greatest amount of uranium resource are Wyoming, New Mexico, Texas and the Four Corners Area of Arizona, Colorado and Utah.

Control of the feed provided to mineral processing facilities is a continuing challenge. Much effort is currently being devoted to overcoming these problems. These projects are usually described under the general headings of Mine-to-Mill Integration or Mine-Mill Optimization. It should be possible to combine the knowledge of ore type, mineralogy, and other characteristics (located in the mine modelling system), with the advanced capabilities of state-of-the-art mill control systems, to achieve an improved level of control in mineral processing, allowing optimization of the mill processes on an almost realtime basis. This is not happening because mill feed it is often treated as a uniform material, when in reality it varies in composition and characteristics. The University of Utah is investigating the use of odor sensors for maintaining traceability in ore production and processing. Odor sensors now used in food processing, environmental monitoring, and other applications can detect the presence of very small amounts (0.1 - 500 ppm) of some molecules. An assortment of such molecules could be used to ?tag? blocks of ore as they are mined, according to their respective characteristics. Then, as the ore came into the mill, an array of ?electronic noses? could be used to assess its characteristics in real time.

The Upgraded Coal Interest Group (UCIG), focuses on clean, low-cost options for coal-based power generation via pre-combustion, co-firing and reburn options. Two great forces are reshaping the power generation industry, the Clean Air Act Amendment and deregulation of generation. The Clean Air Act Amendment is forcing change by making it necessary for power producers to plan for reducing emissions of sulfur and nitrogen oxides and possibly trace elements. At the same time, deregulation of generation is forcing utilities to focus their attention closely on the short term impact of any change on cost of power.
