The history of making blister copper in an Outokumpu Flash Smelting Furnace dates back to the late 1960?s, when Outokumpu first piloted the Outokumpu Direct Blister (ODB) process. The first commercial scale applications have been in use at Glogow, Poland, since 1978 and at Olympic Dam, Australia, since 1988. These applications utilize special concentrates, which are low in iron, and thus the formation of slag is also low. In 1995 the same principle was applied to smelting copper matte into blister copper in industrial scale at Kennecott Utah Copper. This application, the Kennecott-Outokumpu Flash Converting process, will celebrate its 10th anniversary of commercial scale operation this year. This paper outlines the development in efficiency and flexibility of Blister Flash Smelting processes compared to other smelting and converting options. The focus is on the economical aspects i.e. on the total feasibility of both greenfield investment projects and revamping of existing smelters.

Since the advent of the first airborne electromagnetic system, it has been evident that such systems were inherently limited to shallow depths of exploration of the orderof 100 to 200 feet. Hence in 1948 the author and his associates commenced a study of the feasibility of applying natural audio frequency magnetic fields to investigation of the electrical properties of the subsurface in order to provide a system capable of overcoming this limitation. This research culminated, in the summer of 1958, in the development of a new airborne prospecting device — AFMAG. This device has detected surface massive sulphide bodies while flown at heights as great as 3000 feet. Hence, by inference, it is deduced that it could find similar sulphide bodies if they were buried 2500 feet below surface and the aircraft flown at 500 feet. Thus a considerable improvement over conventional airborne electro-magnetic systems is obtainable with AFMAG. Airborne exploration in mountainous terrain involving deep valley fill now becomes possible. Examples are presented of the results of actual airborne AFMAG test surveys over known deposits of massive sulphide mineralization. Interpretation of the data is discussed with particular reference to the knowledge of size, dip, depth, depth extent, and conductivity of causative bodies as deduced from the flight records. The possibility of mapping major geologic structures, for both mining and oil exploration purposes, is discussed with the aid of examples of airborne AFMAG data. INTRODUCTION Electrical prospecting with natural audio frequency electromagnetic waves as a source has, within the last three years, become a practical reality. Both airborne and ground survey instruments under the trademark "AFMAG" (for audio frequency magnetics) have been used successfully in the search for conductive mineral deposits. It is the object of this paper to discuss the principles of airborne AFMAG and to illustrate its application by means of examples obtained over known geological situations. WHY AFMAG? In view of the large number of good airborne electromagnetic systems available for purchase or contract surveying, one may well ask, "Why another new system?". Primarily the answer lies in the fact that AFMAG does not suffer from the very limited depth of exploration available with, and inherent in, any conventional airborne electromagnetic system. AFMAG is not conventional insofar as an artificial transmitter is not required. Only a receiving and detecting device is employed. The electromagnetic fields measured are those from millions of electrical discharges in the atmosphere (e.g;..- lightning strokes). Their random distribution in time and space make these fields difficult to employ and it is only with recent advances in the electronics of geophysical instrumentation that this has become possible. Optimization of blast fragmentation in underground hardrock mining requires analysis of its effects on loading and haulage equipment, together with the downstream materials handling system, with the objective of minimizing total mine operating costs. A methodology is reported which has been developed to quantify the actual fragmentation and equipment performance in the field. This is data which has seldom been practicable to capture nor received serious attention in mines. Based upon the experience gained in underground studies, a prototype standard is proposed which aims to summarize the pertinent data, collection and analysis for fragmentation assessment. This relates to parameters of direct measure, such as mean size and distribution, as well as muckpile and work environment. The paper concludes by defining the impact of fragmentation on the loading and downstream handling system.

Pilot flooding is one method of evaluating a proposed secondary recovery project. However, the amount and rate of oil recovery from an unconfined pilot area is not usually the same as from an equal area in a large-scale flood. This is true because fluids are free to move across the boundary of a pilot area. The result is that some of the oil produced in a pilot flood may come from outside the designated area and some of the displaced oil may leave the pilot area completely. This paper presents the results of fluid-flow model studies on a five-spot pilot flood. Mobility ratios between 0.1 and to have been studied. The effects of changing the ratio of injection to withdrawal rates are shown. INTRODUCTION A small-scale field test, or pilot flood, is an accepted method for evaluating the applicability of a secondary recovery operation and the economic potential of that operation for a reservoir. The pilot flood is carried on in the same manner, with the same injected materials and at the same pressures as would be used were the secondary recovery program to be expanded to a larger area of the field or to the entire field. If the reservoir fluid and reservoir rock properties are the same in the pilot area as in the rest of the reservoir, the production, injection and other pertinent data associated with the pilot test will represent and measure what should be expected from a full-scale development of this secondary recovery program. There is one major exception which, unfortunately, has been overlooked by many and which has been awaiting quantitative definition. This is the sweep-out pattern the reservoir engineer must use in interpreting the pilot flood and in extrapolating it to the full-scale development. The sweep-out area in a pilot flood is not contained within the five-spot pattern. Further, there is oil flow into and/or out of the five-spot during a pilot test. Thus, production data from pilots must be interpreted with this different flow system and sweep pattern in mind. We have studied the sweep-out pattern that will exist for some conditions of operation of pilot flooding a single five-spot (four injection wells and one producer). In our study, reported here, we have assumed that the reservoir is relatively homogeneous and of uniform thickness in the pilot area. The results of this study en-able the engineer to predict the recovery, injection requirements and project life for a full-scale operation from the pilot flooding data. The effects of various injection to withdrawal-rate ratios and mobility ratios in a relatively gas-free (10 per cent pore volume or less) system are shown. Experimental Method The technique used in this study was the same as that for the X-ray shadowgraph studies of sweep-out pattern efficiencies.' The model of the pilot and surrounding area was made from a uniform packing of round-grain sand consolidated with an epoxy resin. Fig. 1 shows the relation between the model and the pilot area. Thallium is not significantly removed from mining influenced water (MIW) through conventional treatment in hydroxide precipitation plants. We experimentally investigated modifications to hydroxide precipitation schemes to concurrently remove thallium. Our goal was to determine cost effective and efficient hydroxide precipitation process modifications for thallium removal. Strategies for removal targeted multiple mechanisms including sorption, co-precipitation and/or oxidation of monovalent thallium. Modifications were tested in batch and included oxidant evaluation and the role of manganese. Removal of thallium was enhanced by the addition of permanganate as well as oxygen by aeration. In addition, contact with retained solids and the initial manganese concentration played an important role in the extent of thallium removal observed. This paper reports on our findings and discusses the implications in the removal of thallium with minor modifications to the hydroxide precipitation process.

The Maragorik Prospect represents a partially eroded Pliocene acid sulphate style epithermal gold system hosted within the Sigule Volcanics and Riet Bed sediments which is inferred to have formed from a degassing porphyry body at depth. A regional sinistral rotation provided by transform faults associated with the opening of the Manus Basin imparts a dilational character to mineralised NE trending faults formed parallel to the Warangoi Graben. A controlled-source audio magneto-tellurics (CSAMT) survey has identified E-W trending buried conductors which may represent alteration formed within dilation zones. While some gold mineralisation occurs within vuggy silica at Palang Hill, the target is auriferous enargite (luzonite)-bearing breccias from the LK1 and Gureki areas.

"Interest in the nitrogen content of steel has increased sharply in the last few years. Investigations have indicated that its presence in steel has an important bearing on high temperature brittleness3, magnetic properties4, room temperature hardening5, and shock resistance. The steel producer may therefore look forward with certaintly to the necessity of controlling this element in a considerable proportion of his product. The literature, however, reveals a great many contradictory statements concerning the percentage of nitrogen which must be present to produce given effects on the properties of iron and steel. Most of these arise from a misunderstanding of the nature of the iron-nitrogen diagram near the iron end and a lack of recognition of the effect of state of aggregation on physical properties although both have been fairly well worked out.My thanks are due to Mr. J. Motok for furnishing a valuable bibliography and translations of articles by Must and Duhr.The iron-nitrogen diagram in the solid state, so far as it concerns the nitrogen content of commercial iron and steel, consists simply in a solubility curve increasing with temperature. The important thing about this solubility curve is that without cold wore the iron nitride when precipitated does not go into solution on heating for long periods below 300°C. This slowness of solution is probably due to the fact that iron nitride when present as a separate phase has at these temperatures an equilibrium pressure of several thousand atmospheres7 and that therefore each particle of iron nitride surrounds itself with a layer of nitrogen. The precipitation of such an unstable crystal presents points of interest thermodynamically but we can not go into these here. It is quite well established that it precipitate. It can not diffuse then unless this layer is broken through or the temperature and pressure are increased to a point where the nitrogen is absorbed at an appreciable rate in the surrounding iron. This rate will depend on the degree of unsaturation of the iron and the excess pressure of the nitrogen above equilibrium pressure. The degree of unsaturation is determined by the temperature alone so that the temperature at which the rate of solution of the nitride becomes appreciable will depend on the pressure of nitrogen developed. This, in turn, will depend on the balance between rate of decomposition of the nitride and the rate o: flow of the iron. In annealed iron, this temperature of appreciable solution rate is between 300 and 350°C.8 By cold work, however, the elastic limit of the iron is increased, and conditions for the nitride to go into solution are reached at a much lower temperature, giving rise to the so-called blue brittleness. This brittleness and hardening is due to iron nitride going into solid solution and is not precipitation hardening."

The installation procedure of fully grouted rebar bolts requires that the bolt be pushed through the resin grout until it is fully inserted in the borehole. Resin grout is a highly viscous fluid that is forced to flow through the annulus between the bolt and the borehole as the bolt advances. Variables such as bolt insertion speed, bolt vs. borehole diameter and grout viscosity determine the magnitude of the pressure generated ahead of the bolt tip. Under weak rock conditions, the magnitude of the pressure of bolt insertion is often sufficient to initiate hydraulic fracturing along joints or bedding planes that allow injection of grout into the strata leading to significant loss of bolt encapsulation. The grout pressure front has also been linked to gloving, a bolt installation problem that reduces bolt effectiveness. A series of tests were conducted to characterize the pressure of bolt insertion during bolt installation under various conditions. Analysis of the data shows three distinct stages of pressure build up during bolt installation. Understanding of the mechanisms involved may allow development of strategies for controlling the pressure buildup and its negative impact during roof bolting under weak rock conditions.

The object of this paper is to give a description of the new office and changehouse building and equipment at the Zinc Corporation Limited, the office section of which has now been in full use for approximately three years, and the changehouse section for approximately two years. As the expectations of the design have been fully realized, it is thought that this description will be of interest to members and possibly of some use to others faced with similar problems.GENERALIn the centralization of the surface plant around the new main shaft the combined office and changehouse building forms a prominent feature, being located between the shaft and the mill and facing the workshops on the northern side.The scheme for housing all employees in one building was proposed by the Manager, Mr. A. J. Keast, who was familiar with a similar successful structure built at the McIntyre Porcupine Mines Ltd. in Ontario, Canada.The principal features of this building were adopted as a basis for design, and the present layout evolved to suit the particular requirements of this mine.Some of the advantages of the design are:(a) Economy in first cost and space occupied when compared with plants having separate office and changehouse buildings.(b) Easier and more constant supervision of employees and of the plant by the senior staff members.(c) Close contact between officials of all departments.(d) Close covered connection between changehouse and shaft.(e) Avoidance of duplication of ,essential services such as electric power, water, heating plant, sewerage, etc.The Managing Director, Mr. W. S. Robinson, further instructed that the following requirements be adhered to in the new building:(a) Ample accommodation to be provided for office staff and other employees.(b) Special attention to be paid to lighting, both natural and artificial.(c) Working temperatures to be controlled to facilitate comfort and efficiency.(d) The buildings and equipment' to be of a permanent nature with furnishings and fittings of modern design.

Five wells have been drilled in the Basker/Manta Block of VIC/P19, Gippsland Basin, resulting in sub-economic Intra-Latrobe Group oil and gas discoveries at Basker-1 and Manta-1. A total of 21 individual hydrocarbon bearing sandstones were intersected by the two wells. These reservoir sand bodies were deposited by fluvial processes in a lower coastal plain environment. The modelling of sand body orientation and geometry is a critical component in the evaluation of the two accumulations. Seismic resolution of the thin (average 2 m to 5 m) sand bodies is inadequate for mapping their orientation and distribution. Dipmeter data has been successfully applied to the problem of orienting the sand bodies using FMS images acquired during the drilling of Gummy-1 and reprocessed HDT data from Basker-1 and Manta-1. Prediction of lateral extensiveness (geometry) of individual sand bodies has also been attempted. Interpreted palaeocurrent direction from all three wells is dominantly from the NW to the SE. Reservoirs in the Manta-1/Gummy-1 area are interpreted to be predominantly channel sands, deposited by relatively low sinuosity streams. As such they would tend to have a laterally extensive, elongate geometry. Sand bodies deposited in the Basker-1 area show a predominance of laterally accreted cycles deposited by meandering streams. Channel geometry may then be limited in the downstream/upstream direction by internal permeability barriers such as clay plugs.

The exclusion of coal fly ash from regulation as a hazardous waste has led to increased interest in returning ash to the coalfields for co-disposal. A multi-year column study used coal refuse with high potential acidity (4% total-S), and two alkaline ashes in various bulk-blends. The unamended refuse acidified rapidly, producing acidic (pH 1.7) leachates, high in dissolved metals. Treatments blended with sufficiently high amounts (20 to 33%) of alkaline ash produced alkaline (pH >8.4) leachates with low metal levels, while lower ash blending rates acidified over time to produce metalliferous leachates. Examination of solid materials indicated that pyrite oxidation was occurring to some extent in all treatments. A regression equation (r2 = 0.95) was developed to estimate time to net acid release for mixtures of these materials. Ash alkalinity and refuse potential acidity must be balanced to insure water quality for co-disposal environments, or the ash materials should be isolated away from acidic drainage waters.

Prolonged laboratory and limited pilot plant tests have shown that the Bureau of Mines buffered S02 -H2S process is capable of removing 95 to 99 percent of the S02 from industrial waste gases. Most of the S02 is converted to elemental sulfur; only about I percent converted to sulfate The process comprises (1) washing the flue gas to remove particulates and S03, (2) absorption of the S02 in citric acid or other carboxylate solution, (3) reaction of the loaded solution with H2S in a closed vessel to precipitate the absorbed S02 as elemental sulfur, and (4) separation of the sulfur from the regenerated solution by oil flotation and melting. Two-thirds of the molten sulfur is converted to H2S for use in the sulfur precipitation step by reacting sulfur vapor with natural gas and steam in the presence of an alumina catalyst. The chemistry and mechanism of the process are described, initial laboratory and pilot plant data are summarized, and second-generation laboratory operation and pilot plant design are reviewed. Preliminary cost estimates are presented for recovering sulfur from copper smelter gas, powerplant flue gas, and Claus plant tail gas.

Abosso Goldfields Limited (AGL) is in the process of developing an expansion of their Damang Open Pit gold mine in Ghana. AGL acquired the Damang mine in January 2002, with SRK participating in the geotechnical investigation and design for the project since 2001. A deep resource drilling program, completed during 2004, intersected an extension of the orebody below the then planned final pit floor. A feasibility study has been completed to determine the economic extraction of this deep ore with an expanded pit shell. The Damang mine is in a stockwork sulphide deposit at the culmination of the Damang anticline. The deposit occurs as hydrothermal mineralisation associated with dominantly east dipping thrusts and sub-horizontal quartz veins. Primary gold mineralisation also occurs in the conglomerates of the Tarkwaian Formation. The geological units consist of steep easterly dipping dolerite, sandstone, siltstone and phyllite beds, with the weathering profile comprising saprolites overlying a relatively thin joint oxidized horizon. It is planned to deepen the current open pit to a final depth of up to 270 m, primarily by the development of a push-back of the eastern and western walls. The edge of the Eastern Tailings Storage Facility (ETSF) is currently located within 80 to 100 m of the crest of the existing pit. The geotechnical design focused on the optimization of the bench face angle and finally recommended a ?Steep Slope Strategy?, involving 24m high near vertical benches. Limiting bench stack heights of 96m at a maximum of 66° were derived from the influence of major structures and the variation in rock mass conditions. The overall slope angles in each pit sector were developed around the requirement for haulage ramps. One of the main design challenges was to optimise the standoff distance between the final pit crest and the ETSF. This process had to consider maximum access to the resource without undue influence on or from the nearby tailings dam. A planned increase to the height of the dam wall was an additional factor in the design. Dewatering of the pit walls was also a major consideration in this tropical environment.

"Development of Barrick Gold’s Pierina gold mine in north-central Peru requires construction of a waste dump for disposal of nonore grade materials stripped from the open pit to expose the ore. The waste dump site is located near the open pit in a U-shaped valley that is underlain by thin colluvial and morainal soils with locally thick peats and glaciolacustrine deposits. Bedrock underlying the site consists of variably weathered volcanics. The site is subject to moderately high seasonal rainfall and significant seismicity. The geotechnical quality of the waste rock is highly variable, ranging from low-quality, degradable, soil-like materials containing appreciable quantities of silt and clay, to high-quality, hard, durable, blocky waste rock.A hybrid dump design concept was developed that requires in-pit segregation of highand low-quality waste, and selective placement of materials in the dump to maximize stability and enhance internal and subsurface drainage. The design includes a rock drain beneath the dump along the axis of the valley and a series of connected finger drains. Extensive peripheral diversions and stormwater control measures to inhibit infiltration of precipitation are also included.This paper discusses the unique challenges presented by the site and waste materials, the design methodology and stability analyses, and planned monitoring systems."

It is not uncommon to find large quantities of combustible materials in underground metal and non-metal mines. Support timber is the predominant combustible material. Spontaneous combustion, welding and cutting, shorted or overloaded electrical cables and careless smoking are common ignition sources. More recently, there is increased use of diesel mobile equipment that requires fuel storage and transfer areas. Diesel fuel spillage on hot engine manifolds and motors can result in rapid flame growth and heavy smoke accumulation in a matter of seconds. In-expensive, reliable fire detection and suppression systems are available to provide early warning of fire conditions and to isolate and extinguish fires that originate in fuel storage and transfer areas. This report presents an example of how technology developed and demonstrated under Bureau of Mines Contract H0242016, Mine Shaft Fire and Smoke Protection System, may be applied to protect underground diesel fuel storage and transfer areas. Subsurface imaging technologies are part of the electromagnetic (EM) geophysical methods. EM technologies such as radio imaging method (RIM), ground penetrating radar (GPR), and drill string radar (DSR) have great application potentials in the mining industry. However, the success for applying the EM methods to subsurface observations is largely dependant on the correct evaluation of the electrical properties (i.e., resistivity and dielectric constant) of the rocks in the domain of interest. The depth of penetration of the EM signal in coal, as well as the electrical contrast between coal and subsurface boundary rocks or anomalies, are critical parameters for any successful radar system. Based on the measured electrical properties of the coal seam, the proper operating frequency of the radar system must be chosen in order to successfully detect features such as the coal-roof rock boundary, dykes, and voids ahead of mining. The electrical properties of the rocks in a coal seam are frequency dependent. Even though there has been a great advancement in the hardware and data processing software in the past twenty years, there have not been many examinations of the high-frequency properties of coal measure rocks. In this paper, the laboratory setups, the testing procedure, and case studies will be presented for a wide spectrum of frequencies for coal measure rock samples collected from various US coal fields. Tests have been conducted to study the different conditions, including moisture content, that affect the EM properties.

A method of measuring the degree of contact between grains of 1 phase in multiphase alloys is derived. It is shown that the number and the areas of contacts between grains can be determined by metallographic analysis. Relations between the area of contact, the dihedral angle, and the mean free path of spherical grains are developed. It is often desirable to interpret the mechanical behavior of alloys in terms of structural features observed under the microscope. A quantitative description of microstructures of multi-phase alloys requires consideration of geometrical and topological factors such as the amount, size, and shape of grains and the continuity of the constituent phases. The number and dimensions of grains may be metallographically determined by applying the methods described by Smith and Guttman1 and by Fullman2 in their papers on the measurement of particle size and internal boundaries in opaque bodies. The present work intends to show that the same methods can be used to evaluate some of the parameters of phase continuity; namely, contiguity, number of contacts, and areas of contact of grains of 1 phase. Application of these concepts may be found in such problems as the calculation of electrical conductivity of 2-phase alloys, or the evaluation of the length of fracture path through grains of a brittle phase more or less dispersed in a matrix. I. DEFINITION The following definitions and derivations are based on 2-phase alloys, of which the units of the microstructure are grains. Contiguity is defined as the average fraction of surface area shared by 1 grain of a phase with all neighboring grains of the same phase. In a 2-phase alloy of constituents A and B, the contiguity of phase B is given by: where Cb is the contiguity of phase B aBß is the average area of contact between a grain of phase B and adjacent grains of phase B, aAB is the average area of contact between a grain of phase B and adjacent grains of phase A. The contiguity is a measure of the average degree of contact between grains of phase B in the 2-phase mixture. The ratio varies from 0 to 1 as the distribution of phase B changes from a completely dispersed to a fully agglomerated structure. Smith and Guttman1 have shown that the relative areas of 2 kinds of interfaces in a volume are directly proportional to the number of interfaces of each type intersected by a random line. The lines can be drawn on metallographically prepared surfaces as long as these are random sections through the sample. The contiguity ratio of phase B then becomes: Cb = 2NBB/NAB + 2N BB [2] where: NBB is the number of interfaces between grains of phase B intersected per unit length of random line. Nab is the number of interfaces between grains of phase B and grains of phase A intersected per unit length of random line. The factor 2 arises in Eq. [2] because each interface B-B is associated with 2 grains of B-phase, whereas the interface A-B involves only 1 grain of B-phase. The calculations of contiguity do not require any assumption as to volume fraction, particle size, or particle shape. Fullman2 gives an expression for the determination of the mean free path between particles. The mean free path PB between grains of phase A, i.e., through grains or agglomerates of phase B, may be found from the relationship: PB =2fB/NAB [3] where fB is the volume fraction of phase B. The calculation of the mean free path is independent of grain shape and grain size distribution. History The Cortez Mining District has a long history of mining activity dating back to 1862. More recently, Cortez Gold Mines had operated a cyanide leach, counter current decantation (CCD) recovery gold mill from January 1969 to February 1976. This type of plant has been standard in the US for treating higher grade, finely disseminated gold in Carlin type ores. The mill was initially operated from 1969 to 1973 at 1.5 kt/d (1650 stpd) on oxidized ore from the Cortez ore body. In 1973, the mill was operated at 2 kt/d (2200 stpd) on softer, less oxidized, high clay ore from Gold Acres, located 13 km (8 miles) west of Cortez, NV. In February 1976, the oxidized portion of the ore body at Gold Acres was depleted and the mill ceased operations. Successful heap leaching of the lower grade portion of the ores was practiced at both Cortez and Gold Acres to supplement the milling operations. Valuable experience was gained in the operation of these two heap leaching programs (Duncan and Smolik, 1977). The ore heaps at Gold Acres and Cortez were releached with a limited crew from 1976 to 1979. The surge in the price of gold in late 1979 sparked an interest to incorporate new techniques into treating lower grade and less oxidized carbonaceous ores at Cortez. In early 1980, heap leaching was started on low grade oxidized dump material left from the earlier Cortez mining operation. By June of 1980, testwork was completed on the London Extension Dump, a low grade, mildly carbonaceous dump at Gold Acres. It was decided to convert the mill at Cortez from the conventional cyanide leach CCD recovery plant to a carbon-in-leach (CIL) recovery system. In May 1983, ore processing from the Horse Canyon deposit began. The Horse Canyon ore body contains both oxide and carbonaceous ores and is located 22.5 km (14 miles) from the Cortez mill. The Cortez CIL circuit was expanded to handle a blend of oxide and carbonaceous ores from Horse Canyon. Ore selection In the last quarter 1979, gold prices were increasing to a point where restarting the Cortez mill, idled since 1976, appeared imminent. Several previously explored geologic reserves at various stages of development were available as possible sources of feed for the mill. Initial metallurgical testing of dumps and tailings from earlier operations was completed, and previously uneconomic deposits were explored. It was decided to pursue sources of ore with the least lead time to production and those with the least capital cost requirements. A master plan was developed to bring the four profitable ore resources into production. The best method to minimise disturbances from traffic to the neighbourhood and in Urban is probably to go underground. For obvious reasons this will cause vibrations, noise and other environmental effects which need very strict regulations and quality assurance in order to complete the work successfully. One project is “Southern Link”, a part of a ring road system. The system of tunnels includes 16 kilometres of tunnels right beneath the south part of the city of Stockholm. At least 20.000 people will be or could be affected by different kinds of disturbances and pollution such as vibrations, noise, gas and groundwater. Another project is the “Arlanda Link”. A new railway with three stations has been built under the existing and running to Arlanda airport with its terminals. Authorities have carefully judged these projects, which cause complaints from neighbours due to disturbances. The blasting operations are professionally managed by the contractors and controlled by consultants to keep the regulations according to the Swedish standards, which are well described in the tender documents by risk analysis and technical descriptions. In spite of that, one conclusion is that it is not always possible to go underground without exceeding stipulated regulations with existing technique.
