NUMEROUS determinations1-7 of the tex-ture of cold-rolled polycrystalline iron, steel, and ferritic alloys have been made with good agreement among the various observers as to the principal features of the texture common to all, but there has been no adequate explanation of the texture in terms of the behavior of individual grains. This study presents an explanation of the texture based on the observed rotation of single crystals when deformed in a manner similar to a grain in the aggregate, a method we have found useful in leading to a better understanding of compression and tension textures;8,9,10 in particular, the aim has been to determine experimentally the end orientations of rolled single crystals of iron. These are discussed in connection with the point of view of Wever1 and of Boas and Schmid2 that the rolling texture is a simple compression texture (compression normal to the rolling plane) superimposed on a simple tension texture (tension in the roll-ing direction), and the point of view of Kurdjumow and Sachs3 that three ideal end orientations exist.

Water-swellable layered silicates, namely, the smectite clays can remove suspended materials (called herein as debris) and metal ions from aqueous streams. The present study shows that the flocculating and metal extracting abilities of smectite clay-based flocculants can be enhanced when these clays are used in conjunction with a specific anionic polymer. Such performance enhancement is attributed to the following: i) the clay-dispersing ability of the polymeric additive, that would translate into an increase in the clay-surface area available for the attachment of the debris particles onto the clay particles; ii) the possibility of dispersant-to-coagulant transition of the polymer during the later instants of the treatment process, as a result of reduction in solvency of the wastewater for the polymer due to the release of cationic species from the clay-based flocculant solids; iii) metal-complexing ability and adsorption properties of the polymer.

Pound Road Quarry is an alluvial gravel quarry owned and operated by Fulton Hogan Ltd. for the supply of aggregate in Canterbury, and is the largest quarry in the South Island in terms of production. It has evolved from three separate quarries, as a result of which extraction has occurred sporadically in a number of areas. Due to this factor, and the need to manage environmental impacts, a detailed quarry management plan was completed in 1995 which formed the basis for implementation of a certified environmental management system.   In December 1997, the quarry was the first in New Zealand to achieve ISO 14001 (TELARC) accreditation for implementation of an environmental management system. The main potential environmental impacts arising from the quarry operation include dust, noise and groundwater contamination, and visual landscape effects associated with gravel extraction, the mitigation of which is achieved by means of æbest practiceÆ methods. All quarry operations are controlled in terms of the environmental management system by means of regular (monthly and yearly) environmental reviews, appropriate auditing of environmental documents, and monitoring of environmental targets in accordance with consent and statutory requirements.

Annoyance, fatigue, and musculoskeletal pain have been reported during prolonged exposures to propulsion-generated vibration in military propeller aircraft1. The objective of this study was to determine the vibration mitigation properties of selected seat cushions and the effects of occupant seating posture during exposure to higher frequency multi-axis vibration associated with military propeller aircraft. Methods A Navy E-2C Hawkeye crew seat was mounted onto the Six Degree-of-Freedom Motion Simulator (SIXMODE). Six seat pan cushion configurations were tested during exposure to an E-2C vibration signal collected in the field1. Seat pan cushions 1 – 5 were used with the original E-2C seat back cushion. Cushion configuration 6 included seat pan cushion 5 with a prototype seat back cushion. Triaxial accelerometer pads were mounted onto the seat pan and seat back cushions to measure the vibration entering the human. Data were collected for seven subjects seated upright with their backs in contact with the seat (back-on) and not in contact with the seat (back-off). Spectral analysis techniques were used to analyze data at the two dominant frequencies associated with the propulsion system (propeller rotation frequency (PRF) ~18.5 Hz, and blade passage frequency (BPF) ~73.5 Hz). Overall accelerations were also calculated between 1 and 80 Hz. Vibration Total Values (VTVs) were calculated using the weighted seat pan and seat back (back-on only) accelerations and compared to the comfort reactions given in ISO 2631-1: 19972. Results In general, the highest accelerations observed at the seat pan occurred in the fore-and-aft (X) direction at both the PRF and the BPF for all cushions and both postures. The most pronounced effect was at the BPF in the X direction, where all configurations showed significantly lower seat pan accelerations than configuration 1 (original E-2C cushion) with the back-on posture. Configuration 5 was the exception with the back-off posture (Fig. 1A, Repeated Measures ANOVA, P<0.05). The most pronounced effect of posture occurred at the PRF in the X direction, where all cushion configurations showed significantly lower seat pan accelerations with the back-off posture (Fig. 1B). All configurations except configuration 2 showed similar VTVs as compared to Configuration 1 (Fig. 2, P<0.05). Configuration 2 tended to show the lowest weighted acceleration levels. Overview: The first step to emergency preparedness and maintaining a safe workplace is defining and analyzing hazards. Although all hazards should be addressed, resource limitations usually do not allow this to happen at one time. Risk assessment can be used to establish priorities so that the most dangerous situations are addressed first and those least likely to occur and least likely to cause major problems can be considered later. Purpose: This training package was developed to assist instructors as they (1) determine how to use risk assessment to improve safety preparedness and (2) present risk assessment concepts and tools to trainees. The concepts and tools presented here can be applied to any mine hazard.

The paper discusses the improvements achieved after an external sparger flotation column was installed as a final cleaner at the Northam Platinum Ltd. UG 2 concentrator in South Africa. It further discusses the improvements achieved after the conversion of a conventional flotation column, utilized as cleaner in the Merensky concentrator, to an external sparger flotation column. Finally, the application of the above knowledge in the design and commissioning of an external sparger flotation column as final cleaner in the furnace slag concentrator, is also discussed. 1. FINAL CLEANER AT THE UG 2 CONCENTRATOR The MF2 designed UG 2 concentrator is processing 75 000 tonnes run of mine ore at a head grade of 4.0 g/t 3PGM+Au and a feed Cr2O3 concentration of 28 %. Since commissioning of the plant in 2001, Cr2O3 in final concentrate amounted to approximately 5 % of the total mass. Although final concentrate produced from the UG 2 concentrator is blended with final concentrate obtained from the Merensky concentrator before smelting, blended Cr2O3 values in excess of 1.6% lead to difficulties in the subsequent smelting process. Several options for reducing the amount of Cr2O3 in final concentrate have been evaluated namely:- ? Differing types of depressants at various dosing rates. This test work did not reduce the amount of Cr2O3 reporting to final concentrate by any significant extent. ? Reduction in mass pull to minimize the entrainment of Cr2O3 in the concentrate stream.. This process change had a detrimental effect on PGM recovery. Conclusions were drawn that conventional mechanically agitated flotation cells could not achieve the required selectivity without sacrificing PGM recovery. As a consequence an alternative mechanism needed to be incorporated for the final cleaning of PGM concentrate.

This paper is the third of a series of reports on asbestos prepared by the Bureau of Mines. The reports already issued contain general information, including descriptions of deposits throughout the world.3/ The present paper deals chiefly with milling and marketing. Many grades of asbestos are marketed, and an important phase of milling is the grading of fiber; these subjects therefore are related so intimately that contiguity in their treatment is fully justified. Although the Bureau of Mines is interested primarily in the mining and preparation of raw materials, the fabrication of asbestos products has attained such importance in the United States that brief reference to processes of manufacture is included. CLASSIFICATION OF FIBER Canadian asbestos fibers are divided into three main groups - crudes, mill fibers, and shorts. The term "crude" is applied to fiber of spinning grade measuring three eighths inch or longer, that is. hand-cobbed and not passed through a mill. Mill fibers are obtained by crushing and beating the fiber-bearing" rock, until the, asbestos is freed and, then removing the fiber from the rock by screening or air separation. Shorts are the lowest grades of mill products.

The purpose of the present work is to demonstrate the removal of manganese from a neutral leach zinc-rich solution ([Zn] =150 g/L) at 80°C by oxidative precipitation using a gas mixture of sulphur dioxide (SO2) and oxygen (O2). In order to determine the optimum conditions for manganese removal, several bench-scale semi-batch experiments were performed, where the effects of ORP and gas mixing were investigated. These tests showed that SO2/O2 is a fast and effective oxidant for removing manganese down to ppm level as long as the appropriate ORP is attained/maintained and gas transfer kinetics are optimized.

"The results of humus and overburden geochemical surveys over the Doyon, Bousquet and Page-Williams gold ore deposits are presented.These studies show that humus sampling for gold gives negative results over the Doyon deposit. The lack of response is probably caused by the presence of 1 m of relatively impermeable glaciolacustrine clay and silt that overlies 1 m to 2 m of till over the surface expression of the ore zone. By contrast, positive responses for gold occur in humus samples over the Page Williams A and C gold deposits. The ""A"" ore zone is covered by several metres of exotic calcareous till over 0.5 m to 1 m of older, locally derived till. Anomalous values for gold in humus range from 10 to 35 ppb over the orebody. Overburden over the ""C"" ore zones is much thinner, generally it consists of less than 2 m of sandy till. Trenching humus anomalies that range from 10 to 1360ppb Au uncovered the gold mineralization. The geochemical dispersal trains in till from the Doyon orebody and the Page-Williams ""A"" zone are relatively short (i.e. less than 200 m) because both deposits occur in the lee of bedrock highs that shielded them from extensive glacial quarrying. Dispersal trains from all three pyritic gold deposits can be defined using either the fine fraction or heavy mineral fraction of the till.The intensity of the gold in till anomalies over the ore zones is variable. Therefore, it would be misleading to attach rigid significant threshold gold values to overburden drilling results. Each case must be evaluated based on bedrock topography, sample density, overburden type, thickness of till, as well as size, type and orientation of the target exposed to glacial erosion."

Humankind&apos;s interest in measurement of human physical strength probably dates to the first humans. At that time, life was truly a struggle in which the fittest survived. To a great extent, fittest meant strongest. Interestingly, current interest in human physical strength in the workplace stems from 1970-1980s vintage research demonstrating that persons with adequate physical strength are less likely to be injured on physically demanding jobs. Survival in many modem workplaces may still be a case of survival of the strongest. There is, however, a flip side to this issue - that persons with limited strength are more likely to be injured on "hard" jobs. To address this problem, we can apply what we know about physical strength to job design. "Hard" jobs can be redesigned to be within the physical strength capability of most people. Since physical strength is important to these jobs, we must find ways to quantify it through testing. This publication concerns human physical strength testing. Its purpose is not to recommend any particular type of testing, but rather to describe the types of testing available and their uses. It is up to each individual user of strength testing to decide which testing technique is most appropriate for his or her particular application. This booklet discusses four types of strength testing: isometric, isoinertial, psychophysical, and isokinetic. Human Strength Before describing the different types of strength measurement, we must define the term "strength" and explain the concept of strength measurement. Strength is defined as the capacity to produce force or torque with voluntary muscle contraction. Maximum strength is defined as the capacity to produce force or torque with a maximum voluntary muscle contraction.(1,2) These definitions include some key words that must be explained. A voluntary muscle contraction is "voluntary." When a person&apos;s physical strength is measured, only the effort the person willingly puts forth at the time is measured. Thus, when we test a person&apos;s "maximum strength," we are not measuring his or her actual maximum, but some lesser value representing what he or she is comfortable expressing at the time with the existing equipment and environmental conditions. Interestingly, when researchers startled persons being tested (e.g., by setting off a starter&apos;s pistol behind them), they have found significant increases in measured strength.(3) It has been hypothesized that the lower strength displayed during normal testing provides a margin of safety against overloading and damaging muscle tissue. The test equipment and the tested person&apos;s familiarity with the process also influence the "voluntary" strength output. The interface between the tested person and the test equipment is particularly important. A poorly designed interface induces localized tissue pressures that vary from uncomfortable to painful. In this situation, testers are measuring voluntary discomfort tolerance - not strength. It is important for strength researchers to keep the "voluntary" nature of their data in mind when they are designing their equipment and protocols.

"The mill of Anaconda Britannia Mines is located on the eastern shore of Howe Sound, approximately 32 miles north of Vancouver, British Columbia. The mill has a daily capacity of 3400 to 3500 tons and at the present is treating chalcopyrite-pyrite ore from which only the copper mineral is concentrated. For a clear conception of concentrate filtering and shipping practice at Britannia perhaps a bit of past history should be related.For many years the mill concentrated copper and zinc minerals and intermittently a pyrite concentrate was produced. It was general practice to ship copper concentrate by towed barge down Howe Sound, across Juan de Fuca Strait and thence down Puget Sound to Asarco's smelter at Tacoma, Washington. Zinc concentrate was loaded in hopper bottom rail gondolas spotted on rail barges and towed to rail heads in Vancouver, thence by rail to Anaconda Reduction Works in Great Falls, Montana. Most of the pyrite produced was shipped by ocean freighters to Japan and Taiwan with an occasional barge load of 2000 to 4000 tons to nearby customers in Vancouver and the state of Washington.In recent years, because of smelter shut-downs for one reason or another, mostly strikes, a considerable amount of copper concentrates has been shipped by ocean freight to Japan and in 1971 several lots were loaded in gondola cars and shipped by rail to the Anaconda smelter in Anaconda, Montana, because Asarco's smelter was forced by municipal and state anti-pollution laws to limit the amount of S02 emission from the smelter stacks. Zinc concentrate production was halted in the early part of 1Y70 because of zinc depletion in the ores and pyrite production was stopped in May, 1971, because of a lack of markets.Filter equipment in the Britannia mill consists of conventional disc vacuum filters and reciprocating vacuum pumps. The copper concentrate filter was installed in 1923 as a 6 x 8'6"" American disc type manufactured by United Filter Corporation, The zinc concentrate filter, now converted as a spare for copper concentrates, is also a 6 x 8'611 American disc manufactured by Traylor Engineering and Manufacturing Company and was installed the same year. Formerly, there were, in addition, two 4 x 6' disc filters for pyrite and two 6 x 6' disc filters to de-water bulk flotation concentrates ahead of the regrind mills. Installed vacuum pumps were two Ingersoll Rand 22"" x 811 and one 22"" x 9"". One of the smaller machines has since been scrapped.At the time of the writer's transfer to Britannia in 1965, the entire filter system was operating as a unit using two vacuum pumps and a common filtrate tank with a 2"" SRL filtrate pump for five operating filters. The regrind and pyrite filters were in continuous operation and the co11p('r concentrate filter alternated with the zinc concentrate filter because both copper and zinc concentrates were transp0rted to storage by the same conveyor belt."

Determining the minimum amount of inert material that can be used between explosive columns is a complex problem. Using too little inert material can result in detonator/primer failure, either by sympathetic detonation of or failure to fire of the subsequent explosive column(s). Propagation type failure results when inert material length between charges is small enough that the subsequent (delayed) deck fires more or less instantly. In this situation, the primer, detonator, or bulk product is initiated by the shock wave from the earlier firing deck. This type of failure may be un-noticed until the vibration/airblast report is examined.

"The current state-of-the-art of chloride hydrometallurgy for treatment of complex sulphide bulk concentrates is reviewed. General considerations regarding the various flowsheet steps are examined and options discussed. Then, individual flowsheets are presented and discussed. Finally, the forward prospects for chloride hydrometallurgy for treatment of complex sulphide bulk concentrates is considered and conclusions drawn concerning the likely application of this technology in the future. IntroductionHydrometallurgical processes for treating sulphide concentrates, in general, have received considerable attention over the last three decades or more. Many flowsheets have been developed, many pilot-plant studies have been undertaken and several processes are now successfully operating. For example, direct ammoniacal pressure leaching has been used by Sherritt Gordon Mines since the 1950s to extract nickel from pentlandite concentrates, the roast-leach-electrowin route is widely used to recover zinc from sphalerite concentrates and direct sulphuric acid pressure leaching of sphalerite concentrates has been successfully commercialized. Also, Duval Corporation operated a direct cupric/ferric chloride leaching process (Schweitzer and Livingston, 1982) with electrowinning to recover copper from chalcopyrite concentrates, this process (now closed) being the only chloride process which has been commercialized for a sulphide flotation concentrate. Despite these developments, it has long been considered, particularly for copper sulphide concentrates, that direct hydrometallurgical processes are in the main unlikely to be able to compete successfully with smelting for large-scale operations of simple high-grade single metal concentrates. As long as such concentrates can be produced commercially, smelting is likely to remain the principal processing route (Flett, 1981). This view is being challenged nowadays through pressure leaching developments made by Dynatec and CESL in Canada and the recent start-up of the Western Metals Gunpowder plant at Mt. Gordon in Queensland (Flett, 2000). Complex sulphide ores offer even greater opportunities because of the ability to produce a bulk sulphide concentrate from the complex sulphide ore with considerably higher metal recovery than is often possible from the production of individual metal sulphide concentrates from differential flotation. Interest continues to focus on hydrometallurgical solutions to these processing problems, particularly with regard to chloride hydrometallurgy. A method is presented for calculating individual gas and oil or water and oil relative permeabilities from data obtained during a gas drive or a waterflood experiment performed on a linear porous body. The method has been tested and found both rapid and reliable for normal-sized core samples. INTRODUCTION Individual oil and gas or oil and water relative permeabilities are required for a number of reservoir engineering applications. Chief among these is the evaluation of oil displacement under conditions where gravitational effects are significant, such as a water drive or crestal gas injection in a steeply dipping oil reservoir. Numerous proposed methods of obtaining relative permeability data on reservoir core samples have been too tedious and time consuming for practical use, or have yielded questionable and sometimes inconsistent results. A method has been developed by which the individual relative permeability curves can be calculated from data collected during a displacement test. The method is based on sound theoretical considerations. Using this method, with a properly designed experimental procedure, relative permeability curves can be obtained using core samples of normal size (i.e., 2 to 3 in. in length and 1 to 2 in. in diameter) within a few days after receipt of the core. In a recent publication D. A. Efros1 describes an approach to the calculation of individual relative permeabilities that is based on the same theoretical considerations. We believe the approach described in the present paper is more adaptable to practical application than the method implied by Efros. In addition, comparisons with independently determined relative permeabilities are furnished to substantiate the reliability of the new method. DERIVATION Previously the theory of Buckley and Leverett as extended by Welge2 as been used to calculate the ratio of relative permeabilities. In the derivation which follows, this theory is further extended to permit calculation of the individual relative permeabilities. The theory assumes two conditions which must be achieved before the method is applicable. They are that the flow velocity be high enough to achieve what has been termed stabilized displacement,3 and that the flow velocity is constant at all cross sections of the linear porous body. In stabilized displacement the flowing pressure gradient is high compared with the capillary pressure difference between the flowing phases. The high pressure drop insures that the portion of the core in which capillary effects predominate will be compressed to a negligibly small fraction of the total pore space. Appendix A is an abridged extract of the report prepared by the Geotechnical and Structural Engineering Society of Idaho, and presents the results of their one-year study to evaluate the feasibility of disposing mill tailings by landfill construction. Appendix B describes the field and laboratory testing program completed by RDM to assess the effectiveness of a soil (slimes) liner as a means of seepage control to reduce the introduction of contaminants into the local ground water regime. Appendix C presents a summary of a thesis by Lawrence Martin on the analysis of the acid production potential of mill tailings, and the results of geotechnical testing of mill tailings completed by ROM. Appendix D describes potential landfill sites identified within the study area, the development of these sites to meet the present needs of the mining industry and the future requirements of the community is described. Appendix E summarizes the main legislation impacting on tailings disposal. Appendix F discusses the environmental and socio-economic factors that should be considered.

A model pillar study was conducted in which the engineering principles of dimensional analysis were applied to the problem of coal mine pillar design. The paper reviews the theory of similitude as applied to the model pillar study conducted in the investigation. An example solution of a design problem is included to indicate how the results of the study may be used as a first approximation in the design of coal mine pillars. The design of mine pillars for adequate support with minimum loss of valuable raw materials has always presented a problem to the mining engineer. Most often, for lack of a better method, past practice has influenced the design of new mine pillars. This process has always left doubt as to the safety factor of the pillars. The work presented in this paper is an initial attempt toward adapting the engineering principles of dimensional analysis to the problem of pillar design in underground mines. The use of the dimensional analysis technique is advantageous because all the variables associated with the problem are considered, and by systematic analysis the relative influence of each variable is determined. The model material utilized in this study was taken from the Helena seam of the Cahaba coal field located in central Alabama. The research study was sponsored by The Southern Electric Generating Co. as part of an over-all rock mechanics investigation of the Helena seam area. THEORY OF SIMILITUDE Model analysis is used extensively in engineering today, particularly in the solution of design problems that defy the classical methods of analysis. Such problems arise when materials with a nonlinear stress-strain relationship are involved, when geo- metric boundaries are difficult to define in simple form, when strains become large, or when partial failure occurs. All of these difficulties usually exist in pillar design problems. Those principles which underlie proper design and construction of models, and the interpretation of test results, comprise the theory of similitude. That is, the theory of similitude includes a consideration of the conditions under which the behavior of two separate entities or systems will be similar, and the techniques of accurately predicting behavior of one from observation of the other. The theory of similitude may be developed by dimensional analysis. Dimensional analysis, as a powerful analytical tool, is developed from a consideration of the dimensions in which each of the important quantities involved in a phenomenon is expressed. It is based on two axioms: 1) Absolute numerical equality of quantities may exist only when the quantities are similar qualitatively. 2) The ratio of the magnitudes of two like quantities are dependent on the units used in their measurement, provided that the same units are used for evaluating each. Dimensional analysis, developed from these two axioms, differs from other types of analysis in that it is based solely on the relationships that must exist among the pertinent variables because of their dimensions, rather than on the relationship of natural laws. In itself, dimensional analysis ~rovides qualitative, rather than quantitative relationships, but when it is combined with experimental procedures, it may be made to supply quantitative results and accurate prediction equations. APPLICATION OF THEORY The design of an adequate mine pillar requires the determination of a design equation and the selection of a dimensional system with which to work. Since force plays an important part in the design of mine support, the FLT (force, length, time) system has been used. Keywords: Recycling, Electrodeposition, Recovery, Dilute, Dissolved Metal Ions In order to facilitate the recovery of pure metals from solutions containing a mixture of dissolved metal ions, a pulsed electrodeposition method was developed. Using this method, it is possible to selectively remove metal ions from solution based upon the electrochemical potential of the particular ion desired. The use of pulsed electrodeposition rather than direct current electrodeposition creates an electrodeposited material with better morphology, increases electrical efficiency of the process, and avoids problems with short circuiting between electrodes. Using this method, it is possible to recover dissolved metal ions in a purified form in one simple step, and therefore maximizes recovery of the metal ions while obtaining them in a saleable form. This method is likely to be useful in improving the recycling process for numerous complex metal mixtures and alloys.

The richer, shallower sapphire deposits of the New England region of New South Wales which have been traditionally mined by the small miner are almost worked out. Larger mining and exploration companies are replacing the small miner and exploring for the primary source of sapphire or lower grade alluvial deposits. &nbsp; Although in recent years considerable exploration effort has been directed at locating the primary source, commercial exploitation of sapphire is still restricted to the working of alluvial deposits. &nbsp; If the Australian industry is to compete against Asian and African producers it must use cost effective exploration, mining) processing and marketing methods.

During sonic logging quality control testing of the drilled shaft foundations for the replacement bridges crossing the Broad and Chechessee Rivers for SC 170 in Beaufort County, South Carolina, irregular signals were observed on a consistent basis near the shaft top elevations. These irregular sonic signals were attributed to access tube ?debonding?, which is the separation of the access tubing from the surrounding concrete. A total of 160 drilled shafts were installed for this project, of which 41 were evaluated using sonic logging testing. Both PVC and steel access tubes were used during the project to allow for sonic logging testing. This paper details the investigation of access tube debonding with time, discusses the solutions used to minimize access tube ?debonding?, and presents the results of the sonic logging testing for the entire project. The solution selected, installation of PVC along the pile length and steel access tubing within 40 feet from the top of shaft, allowed for reliable sonic logging to effectively evaluate the upper portions of the drilled shafts.
