We are moving into an era where we experience the consequences of the skills crisis û namely many resource models have been generated by inexperienced people under pressure to deliver high quality resource estimates in unsupported environments, often without technical mentors. These resource models form the basis of our decision to pursue actual mining. This begs the question: how valid are the resource models that form the basis of our mining decisions? This paper presents various model validation tools such as comparison of input and output statistics, swath plots, sectional or bench comparisons between drill holes and models as well as a variety of other approaches. Each model validation tool currently used in industry is examined:how the tool generates results,what assumptions exist,what constitutes a pass/fail in the test, and what interpretations to consider when using the validation tool. Each validation toolÆs suitability and the inherent flaws in the underlying assumptions are also discussed. These are supported with examples of good versus bad validations. Our principles based reporting codes provide flexibility in how models are generated and what approaches and/or parameters are used to generate resource estimates. This flexibility works well when used by experienced practitioners. However, our reporting codes assume a level of experience not always available in the current skills crisis. This paper seeks to provide minimum model validation prerequisites for model acceptance and suitability, regardless of the resource analystÆs experience. As we move forward, our immediate challenge is to ensure our baseline resource models are material, transparent and competent.

In recent years, with the increase of the number of high-rise buildings that are proposed and being built in Central Florida especially in Downtown Orlando, Augered Pressure Grouted Displacement (APGD) piles became a pronounced foundation option. The APGD pile is a bored displacement pile that does not result in drilling spoil. APGD piles are mostly suited for loose to medium granular soils and slightly silty/clayey sandy materials, such as those encountered in Central Florida. The case history presented in this paper involves the APGD piles recommended for a 35-story mixed-use condominium in Downtown Orlando. The subsoil condition was typical for the region; that is loose to medium fine sands underlain by thin layer of plastic sandy clays and plastic clays followed by mixed clayey sands and sandy clays with phosphates and traces of shells transitioned to the weathered limestone. Four APGD test piles were installed and were, statically, tested. Three of the tested piles failed to support the design load. Analysis of load test results showed that the bottom half of the test piles, below the plastic clay deposits, was not effective, which was attributed to structural deficiency resulted from possible pile necking due, in our opinion, to the increase of the porewater pressure within the plastic clays. Three additional test piles were constructed with modified reinforcement cage; that is to extend beyond the plastic clays with tighter stirrups. The additional test piles were, statnamically, tested and were able to sustain the design loads. The construction of the APGD piles through subsoil conditions similar to those of Downtown Orlando, where plastic clayey deposits are encountered, should account for the high porewater pressures that mostly will be developed within the plastic clay, hence, may cause pile necking. Extending the cage to penetrate through and pass the plastic clays reduced the necking potential and improved the test piles performance.

Differentiation of a basaltic (?) magma occurred in an active volcanic area during the late Miocene and Pliocene, and a change in the general mode of extrusion from fissure flow for the basalt to explosion for the andesite reflects an accompanying increasing magmatic viscosity. A caldera formed after the flow phase was completed and was filled with coarse agglomerate, much of which has a fused appearance. After an erosion interval its shape was modified and it became gradually deeper as repeated explosions from growing andesitic volcanoes caused large quantities of pyroclastic material to be deposited. At the close of this phase the floor abruptly collapsed when a, large block of the underlying crust was engulfed. The incompetent pyroclastics filling the caldera steepened in dip and the ensuing fractures were filled by the rising magma as dykes and sills and a chonolith formed below the caldera at a shallow depth. The ensuing activity reveals a further stage in differentiation and biotite is an important new ferromagnesian to be observed in the new rocks.Fracturing of the surrounding basalts was most intense in the rocks forming the periphery of the caldera where steeply and flatly dipping faults resulted from increasing horizontal pressure directed towards the caldera.Further differentiation resulted in the increased crystallization of orthoclase felspar, as evidenced by the numerous intrusives of trachy andesitic composition. Magmatic freezing caused mineralizers to accumulate at the top of the chonolith. These eventually escaped and auriferous pyrites, tellurides, quartz, and calcite were deposited in the surrounding rocks.The flatly dipping fractures are the most important and can be expected at various depths in a zone about 4,000 ft wide surrounding the caldera. Latest movement along these was controlled by magmatic consolidation rather than the shape of the caldera. Some flat faults were able to remain open during mineralization and acted as a feeder for the shallower fractures, thus limiting the depths to which the steeper dipping fractures were mineralized with the possible exception of one particular Nw.-striking lode (the Crown-Crescent).INTRODUCTIONThe gold deposits of the Tavua district were discovered in 1932 and from 1935 to June, 1961, 1,985,041 fine ounces of gold were produced from 4,202,504 tons of ore. Statistics is essentially a study of variability, the use of some suitable mathematical model representative of such variability, and the application of this inferred pattern of behaviour to practical problems. Probability theory is the mathematical structure devised for providing models for chance happenings. Perhaps the simplest example of a chance happening is the result obtained in tossing a coin. Although the result of a single toss can never be predicted with certainty, there is no reason why in repeated tosses the expectancy of heads and tails should not be equal. In such a case the outcomes of the experiment are said to be equally likely, so that the probability of obtaining heads (or tails) is 1 in 2, that is, 0,5. This simple probability .model refers to a 'mathematical' or 'unbiased' coin. Whether such probabilities are meaningful for actual coins tossed in any particular way is a matter for experience to determine. Probability models have also provided the basis for representing observed variability in cases where the actual under- lying probabilities are only partly known or defy analysis. A typical example of the latter case is the variability observed in the values obtained from gold or other ore samples. The interacting natural forces which gave rise to this variability are obviously very complex and are unlikely ever to be unravelled completely. In spite of this, probability theory and the more recent geostatistical theories have provided us with models which can represent this variability on a reasonable basis. Applied statistics and geostatistics must therefore never be accepted as exact mathematical sciences. Furthermore, a basic and essential concept is that in the type of applications covered in these notes, no model must ever be accepted as necessarily the final and exact answer to the problem; thus, any model must prove and continue to prove its appropriateness in practice, preferably by follow-up comparisons.

ONE year ago, that is in January, 1923, there had not been constructed a single oil-storage tank of 55,000-bbl. or more capacity with a completely electric welded roof and bottom. Today, there are at least fifty 80,000-bbl. storage tanks completed, or nearing completion, on which both the roofs and the bottoms are electric welded. All of the following data and conclusions were obtained from observations made during the welding of tanks by the Welding Engineering Co. at Texas City, Tex., and Tonkawa and Burbank, Okla. As far as can be determined, the first electric welding on large tankage was completed in May, 1922. At that time the Empire Companies of Bartlesville, Okla., discovered a badly leaking bottom in a 55,000-bbl. tank at El Dorado, Kans. They had considered concreting this bottom, but because of the much smaller cost, decided to try electric welding; so a- contract was given the Welding Engineering Co. of Bartlesville, Okla. In this instance, no new sheets were added, the bottom being repaired by electric welding of all seams and rivets, Fig. 1. The majority of SAG and ball mill design methodologies are applied using a single design value for mill selection, such as the 80th percentile ball mill work index or SMC value. Inherent in the selection of this design value is a desire for the mill to accommodate unfavourable, but not absolute worst case, feed conditions. It has been observed in numerous “post-mortems” of unsuccessful designs and also in many optimisation studies, that the selection of the design value has been poor. Statistical analysis of testwork data sets shows that inherent variability in the data can, by itself, lead to design errors. Metallurgical testing is an attempt to measure the characteristics of millions of tonnes of ore using only a few kilograms of sample. In this paper some realistic but synthetic test work data sets are used to explore old and new methods of defining the design envelope and subsequently selecting a reliable point. The aim of the paper is to provide practitioners with tools that reveal the adequacy (or otherwise) of metallurgical test programs intended to support various levels of project design. It also provide guidance as to how it is possible to statistically justify a comparatively high design point in the absence of adequate test data.CITATION:David, D, 2015. Solvent extraction has recently been introduced into Australian hydrometallurgical practice for the production of a high grade uranium concentrate from El Sherana ore by a sulphuric acid leach and solvent extraction process. The solvent is a 5 per cent solution of tri(iso-octyl)amine in kerosene modified with 4 per cent of a long chain alcohol. The stripping reagent is a molar solution of sodium chloride.Preliminary testing for the development of the process showed that the leach liquor was quite amenable to the solvent extraction process and that the equilibrium and rate considerations of both the extraction and stripping steps were very favourable.The industrial plant contains four stages of extraction, three stages of chloride stripping and one stage of secondary carbonate stripping. An internal type of mixer-settler is used for the stagewise contact, the design being based on tests with model equipment.The performance and control of the industrial plant is satisfactory; 99·7 per cent of the uranium is recovered for a loss of 0·3 gallons of kerosene and 0· 4 pounds of amine per 1,000 gallons of liquor treated.INTRODUCTIONThe processing of El Sherana uranium ore from the South Alligator River valley commenced in April, 1959, and thereby introduced into Australian hydrometallurgical practice the unit operation of solvent extraction on an industrial scale. Although there are now some twelve mineral processing plants in the United States and Canada using solvent extraction, its application to the field of primary hydrometallurgy is quite new. Prior to 1956 none of these twelve plants was operating and hydrometallurgical application waslimited to the refining of comparatively high grade uranium compounds and fission products from nitrate and nitric acid solutions.

"The primary objective of the Barrick Goldstrike expert system is to achieve the desired liberation size for the autoclave circuit while maximizing throughput. In addition, when downstream limitations (autoclave circuit or others) restrict the milling circuit tonnage the expert system further improves grinding product size. Since its implementation, the expert system has provided expected throughput improvements while improving or maintaining circuit performance.Barrick Goldstrike and MinnovEX Technologies Inc. teamed up to install an expert system to control Line I and I1 of the autoclave grinding circuits. The dissimilar equipments of the two grinding circuits coupled to different production objectives, skepticism among operators, and the variability of the ore types processed in each line challenged the implementation.To ensure implementation success, Barrick Goldstrike dedicated four administrators full time to the project. The system administrators included two metallurgists, a process control engineer and a mill trainer. As usual, the control room operators were the experts who provided the operational logic for the foundation of the control system. The administrators and all eleven of the control room operators signed off on acceptance of the system. Current online utilization is 95%.INTRODUCTIONThe grinding circuit for Barrick Goldstrike’s autoclave process consists of two SAG Mill Ball Mill lines. Line 1 grinding circuit is comprised of a 22 by 8 foot, 2500 horsepower Allis Chalmers (AC) variable speed SAG mill, followed by a 12.5 by 14 foot, 1250 horsepower AC ball mill, and a 13.5 by 18 foot, 1800 horsepower Dominion ball mill in parallel. SAG mill recycle from the primary discharge screen (+5/16 inch) is processed through a 1352 Nordberg Omnicone crusher (4.5 foot). A secondary SAG discharge screen (+1/8 inch) closes the SAG circuit. The ball mill circuit is closed with 6 Krebs super D20 cyclones. Line 2 grinding circuit is comprised of a 24 by 12 foot 4000 horsepower Fuller variable speed SAG mill followed by a 16.5 by 30.5 foot 5000 horsepower Fuller ball mill. SAG mill recycle from the primary discharge screen (+5/16 inch) is processed through a 1560 Nordberg Omnicone crusher (5 foot). A secondary SAG discharge screen (+1/8 inch) closes the SAG circuit. The line 2 ball mill circuit is closed with 12 Krebs super D20 cyclones. The underground Meikle ore is typically fed through Line 1. Achieving the desired product size is critical for successful processing of Meikle ore. Open pit Betze ore is fed to Line 1 when Meikle ore is unavailable. Line 2 processes Betze ore exclusively. Throughput is maximized when processing Betze ore as the product size is less critical. The products of these two circuits are combined as feed to the autoclave circuit. The ore types and the autoclave circuit demands determine the required grinding circuit product size and maximum combined mill feed tonnage."

R.C. Rex, Jr. V. Rajaram's paper does not accurately reflect the status of Eastern oil shale development as it stands today. Today, there are numerous firms and research organizations pursuing development of the Eastern oil shale resource. Details of the current projects can be found in the symposium proceedings for the 1985 Eastern Oil Shale Symposium held in Lexington, KY, in November 1985. Additionally, the comparison of the Paraho and HYTORT processes is invalid because the HYTORT process design used it not an accurate representation of the HYTORT process. I will briefly address this point. It is disconcerting to see the author reference hydroretorting work conducted at the Institute of Gas Technology (IGT) (circa 1978) in the introduction, which indicates hydroretorting (the HYTORT process concept) yields of up to 250% of the Fischer Assay oil yield, and then turn around and base the remainder of the paper on the 1981 "Synthetic Fuels From Eastern Oil Shale Report," which depicts the HYTORT process as yielding only 115% of Fischer Assay. Indeed, work conducted at IGT to 1981 indicates commercial oil yields for the HYTORT process would be in the range of 200% to 210% of Fischer Assay. A more thorough literature search by the author would have yielded a 1981 publication by Schora et al., entitled "Update on the HYTORT Process" presented at the Symposium on Synthetic Fuels From Oil Shale in Nashville, TN, October 1981. This paper thoroughly discusses the shortcomings of the referenced study with respect to the HYTORT process. For the interested reader, I can also recommend a June 1984 report entitled "An Economic Comparison of Five Process Concepts for Using Eastern Oil Shale," published by Los Alomos National Laboratory (LA-10106-MS, Parkinson et al., NTIS No. DE84-015981). This study applies a realistic HYTORT design (circa 1982) and indicates that HYTORT is the most econom¬ical method of processing Eastern oil shales (about $20/bbl less than Paraho). Additionally, completion of the HYTORT feasibility study in June 1983 by Phillips Petroleum Co., Bechtel Group Inc., HYCRUDE Corp., and IGT has resulted in development of designs that will make the use of HYTORT on Eastern oil shales even more economic. HYCRUDE Corp., a second-tier subsidiary of IGT, is involved in commercialization and licensing of the HYTORT process and is active in efforts to develop the Eastern oil shale resource. As such, I am disappointed to see outdated material that has the potential for adversely affecting development of Eastern oil shale resources published in MINING ENGINEERING. I can only hope that this response will serve to mitigate any negative opinions that may have been formed. Today, activity in commercializing Eastern oil shales dominates the oil shale scene in the US and indicates a realization of the potential for these shales. Reply by V. Rex, Jr. I hope that Hycrude's work will lead to the funding of a pilot plant to demonstrate that yields of greater than 200% of Fischer Assay can be achieved in a commercial plant using eastern US oil shales.

THE method of electrical mapping of oil structures to be described possesses certain limitations, as well as certain definite advantages. It, in common with other geophysical methods, is not a panacea for the solution of all subsurface geological problems. It operates on differences in electrical conductivity of the geological strata, whereas the other most-used methods operate on (1) differences in magnetic properties, (2) differences in gravimetric properties, or (3) differences in seismic properties. This modification of the resistivity method is therefore able to obtain subsurface information under conditions not favorable to the other methods mentioned. Where the other methods have been employed with ambiguous results it may act as a complementary method.

"The uranium deposit Curilo located in Western Bulgaria for a long period of time was a site of intensive mining activities including both the open-pit and underground mining techniques as well as in situ leaching of uranium. The ore was rich in pyrite and, apart from uranium, contained some non-ferrous metals. The mining operations in the deposit were ended in 1990 but since that time the deposit is a permanent source of acid drainage waters. The generation of these waters is connected mainly with the oxidation of pyrite and other sulphide minerals by the indigenous acidophilic chemolithotrophic bacteria.Laboratory and pilot-scale studies revealed that an efficient clean-up of the above-mentioned waters was achieved by means of passive systems of the wetland type. In 2001 a wetland was constructed in the deposit to treat a portion of the acid drainage waters which were discharged to a small ravine. This ravine reaches into the Teina, a small river that is a tributary of the upper reaches of the Iskar river.The wetland was constructed in the ravine and its bottom was located on intrusive rocks with a very low permeability. The rocks were covered by a 30 – 50 cm layer consisting of a mixture of soil, plant compost and crushed limestone. The wetland was characterized by an abundant water and emergent vegetation and a diverse microflora. Typha latifolia, Typha angustifolia and Phragmites australis were the prevalent plant species in the wetland but species of the genera Juncus, Eleocharis, Carex and Poa as well as different algae were also well present.The acid drainage waters treated by the wetland had a pH in the range of about 2.5 – 4.1 and contained uranium, radium, some heavy metals (iron, manganese, copper, zinc, cadmium, lead), arsenic and sulphates in concentrations much higher than the relevant permissible levels for waters intended for use in the agriculture and/or industry. The watercourse through the wetland covered a distance of about 0.2 – 1.0 l/s."

"The evaluation of health hazards within the treatment of mineral and waste materials is gaining more and more importance in industrial countries. The need to control occupational safety has been recognised, and regulations which describe general protective measurements for personnel provide a tool to protect their health. It is the aim of the paper to give an outlook for practical approaches to risk assessment and to present measures for exposure reduction in accordance with the state of the art in Germany.Both the treatment of minerals and of waste materials are described in relation to the risk assessment. The method of evaluating health hazards in the two industries is similar and therefore both examples are presented next to each other.The example presented in the paper is the German “Biostoffverordnung” (the regulation for biological materials) which is important for the waste treatment industry. All kinds of waste treatment facilities (like composting facilities, waste dumps, sorting facilities for packaging materials) are obliged to carry out an assessment of health hazards for a variety of working areas and working places. The possible safety requirements deriving from this regulation are presented and discussed under the aspect of biological hazards.All over the world each country has different guidelines and regulations but all have one target in common – to protect the employees. "Interest in the recovery of cyanide from gold and silver plant tailings has heightened in recent years. This interest has been spurred by several factors:Increasingly stringent regulations throughout the gold producing world, governing discharge limits for free and total cyanide to tailings ponds and the environment.The increasing cost of active chemical treatment versus passive (natural degradation) treatment of tailing, to bring them in line with environmental regulations.The worldwide trend to processing of more complex gold ore bodies, which is usually accompanied by higher levels of cyanide consumptions and greater concentrations of cyanide (particularly the copper cyanide complex) in tailings.The growing negative perception of the general public for the gold mining industry, due to several highly publicized cyanide spills in recent years (breaches of tailings dams, accidents involving trucks carrying cyanide to gold plants, etc.).The ability to recover cyanide from gold plant tailings has been known almost as long as the cyanidation process has been practiced, but there has been little incentive to process tailings in this way in the past. With the development of technologies that make it possible to recover and recycle free or complexed cyanide directly from gold plant slurry tailings, which indicates, on paper at least, the potential for significant cost savings compared to cyanide destruction, coupled with the introduction of legislation to seriously limit the discharge of cyanide to the environment in most gold-producing regions of the world, many companies are evaluating the cyanide-recovery alternative."

"The triboelectric charge attributes of some silicate minerals (i.e., feldspar, quartz and wollastonite) after contacting different triboecharging medium made of different materials were studied. The charge acquisitions by different size fractions of minerals were monitored and accordingly the energetic work function values, i.e., the main parameter determining the entity of triboelectric charges acquired by mineral grains, of the examined minerals were estimated. Moreover the separation behavior of different size fractions of these minerals through the electric field of a laboratory free-falling separator when the mineral grains are charged by different tribochargers were observed and considered as the electrical separation potential of the examined minerals.Furthermore, the role of adsorption of different chemical species on triboelectric charge characteristics and charge acquisition of mineral samples were described from theoretical point of view and the effects of some chemical reagents on triboelectric charge acquisition of the examined minerals were studied. In addition the separation behavior of chemically conditioned quartz, feldspar and wollastonite minerals, using different anionic and cationic reagents, through the electric field of a free-fall electrostatic separator before and after chemical conditioning were monitored.Finally an attempt was made to translate the findings from single mineral systems to a complex silicate ore, containing mainly of feldspars, quartz, and wollastonite. Different separation tests under various conditions were conducted to this complex silicate ore. Before passing through the separation device, the ore sample was conditioned by different cationic and anionic reagents and then was triboelectricaly charged by different tribocharging medium in order to find the effective reagent and tribocharging medium for separating silicates. Besides the role of temperature and humidity of the surrounding ambient in separation behavior were considered."

A glance at the accompanying table reveals that for the first time in many years the industrial minerals field did not post significant gains in production. Gypsum, cement, sand and gravel, and crushed stone production-which are very sensitive to construction industry performance-barely managed to stay even, or in fact, declined slightly. Even barite production, in spite of increased oil and gas drilling, was off 5% in 1979 from 1978. Domestic fluorspar production continued to decline while imports, primarily from Mexico, South Africa, and Spain, rose 11%. Worldwide production of iodine (which is used primarily as a catalyst, animal feed additive, and in ink and colorants, stabilizers, pharmaceuticals, photographic film, and disinfectants) grew about 9% on a worldwide basis-from 10.75 Tg to 11.16 Tg. This does not include US production. The two US producers increased demand as apparent domestic production increased about 5%. Increasing energy costs and the transportation situation have had a prohibitive effect on the industrial minerals field. The critical shortage of railroad cars, according to consultant Neil Johnson, is due to several factors: • High capital investment rind interest rates needed to build new equipment, • Accidents, obsolescence, and failure to repair equipment reduced car availability, •Reduction in some train schedules due to fuel economy, and •Increased turnaround time as a result of new safety regulations. Railroad rates have increased an average of 7% per year for the past 10 years. Last year's increases were about 11.1% due to fuel costs and surcharges. Truck shipments have increased their penetration in certain areas of the southeast because of the shortage of box cars and the producers' demand for quick shipment. Some producers report a 15-20% increase in truck use. In the feldspar-mica area, which formerly made most shipments by rail, trucks are now used for about half the shipments. Marketing prices, as expected, increased due to higher costs for energy, power, labor, and supplies used in production. Estimated average price increases were about 10% which, in many cases, did not cover increased production costs. Each potential oil sands developer deals with the question of optional sources of raw water to supply large water demands that range from 50 to 80 million cubic metres per year for each of six existing and planned developments. The Athabasca River currently supplies nearly all of the water to the existing mines via conventional bank intakes, which has resulted in some concern over the effects of reduced river flows. This paper describes the various water supply options, and the likely scenario for future oil sands water supply projects. Various water supply options have been suggested including Athabasca River water via infiltration galleries, groundwater, combined Athabasca River water and alluvial groundwater using wells (i.e. bank filtration systems), diversion of tributary rivers, utilization of large lakes in the region and pumping from other large rivers in the region. Investigations show that the size of river catchment needed to support raw water usage by a typical oil sands mines exceeds 5,000 km2 eliminating all tributary rivers that are located in the oil sands region except those rivers with large drainage areas like Firebag and MacKay Rivers. Lakes cannot be used as a source of supply due to large water deficits for smaller lakes and the large cost of sourcing water from a lake as large as Lake Athabasca. A groundwater source alone would not likely meet the large water demands. River intakes on the Athabasca River will likely continue to be the most practical water supply option for oil sands mines north of Fort McMurray, although various types of Athabasca River intakes are possible. Existing intake systems include screened riverbank intakes, forebay intakes, and river bottom intakes. Infiltration galleries are not feasible for most sites, though some bank-filtration-type systems using high capacity wells may be an option if there is sufficient thickness of high-permeability alluvium at a suitable location in the Athabasca River valley.

Waste rock dumps, tailings impoundments and spent leach heaps are common features at mine sites. Many of these waste disposal facilities contain sulfide-rich minerals, which generate acid mine drainage (AMD) when they oxidize. Control of AMD can be achieved by removing one or more of the three essential components in the acid-generating process (sulfides, air, or water). One AMD prevention measure is to cap the waste with an engineered cover system to minimize the infiltration of water and diffusion of air into the system. Possible cover designs include: ? Earthen ?store-and-release? covers (also known as evapotranspiration (ET) or water balance covers), including capillary barriers. These covers require climate conditions where there is both modest to little rainfall and significantly greater evapotranspiration than precipitation, both annually and seasonally. ? Low-permeability compacted clay liners (CCLs) employing fine-grained soils typically compacted at wet of optimum water content. ? Geosynthetic composite covers, comprised of a geomembrane liner placed over and in direct contact with either a CCL or a geosynthetic clay liner (GCL). These systems have been commonly used for base liners for leach pads as well as covers and base liners at municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills in the US for more than 20 years. Comparisons of these different cover systems, both in terms of performance and cost, are presented later in this paper. First, however, a review of the typical mine closure approaches, and the possible rationale behind them, is warranted.

At mine sites, the operational and required storage volumes of solution and water storage ponds and reservoirs are usually calculated based upon a water-balance approach. Many climatological variables including precipitation, air temperature, solar radiation, pan evaporation and relative humidity along with operating parameters, are used in the water-balance model. The water-balance model often seeks to find a “critical period” of wet or dry climatological sequences which result in a “maximum” pond storage volume or water demand. The problem with this approach is that the designer usually does not know when the project will come on line in relation to the historical record. To avoid this pitfall, we use a more robust approach. In the more robust method, the water-balance calculations begin in each year of the historic climatological record. This method results in the same number of water-balance runs (or realizations) as the number of years of climatological record. Results of this type of analysis guarantee that the critical period or maximum required pond volume will be found if it is assumed that the historical climatological record repeats itself or if a synthetic time series is used. In addition, this method permits calculation of the likelihood (probability) that a given pond volume will be equaled or exceeded in any given month of the operational life of the facility. In this paper, the results of the sizing of a heap leach pad solution pond are presented along with the probabilities of a given solution pond size being equaled or exceeded based on the robust water-balance approach.
