Calculations of the temperatures of metal, coke, and gas at any level in the cupola furn~ce can be carried out by means of heat balances, using data obtained from experiments with an 18 in. experimental cupola. The results can, to a certain extent, be verified by means of heat transfer calculations.The curves thus obtained, showing the variation of temperature with height in the cupola, provide a valuable picture of the heat transfer processes in a shaft 'furnace.INTRODUCTIONThe Brown Coal Research Laboratory, of the University of Melbourne, has been engaged in recent years on a programme of iron-melting tests in an experimental cupola furnace.Although the ultimate aim of this work is to develop brown coal char as a cupola fuel, most of the experimental work so far has been with conventional coke. The testing programme was designed to provide information on the effect of variables such as blast rate, metal-coke ratio, and coke size on the overall melting process, e.g. melting rate, temperature of metal tapped, and stack gas composition.However, in many cases data were obtained on conditions inside the furnace by measuring temperatures and gas compositions. The aim of the work described in this paper was to qevelop a method for using this data to obtain information on the processes taking place in the cupola.Very little research has been done on the combustion of fuels in shaft furnaces. Early work on this subject, as well as the initial stages of the Brown Coal Research Laboratory's programme, has been discussed by Evans (1959). South Africa has joined the league of other major Western World countries by officially adopting its own code for public reporting of Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves. The recently published South African Code for Reporting of Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves (SAMREC Code or Code) (SAIMM 2000) is presented here in its local and global context. The main aspects of the Code are listed and elaborated upon. The Code has been written with the participation of the major South African stakeholders in the field including Government institutions, the legal confraternity and the mining industry. Relevant foreign organisations, such as the Australasian Joint Ore Reserves Committee (JORC) and the United Nations contributed to its compilation, and supported it. The Code thus enjoys endorsement both locally and, to a large extent, overseas. The Code is modelled on, and is 90 per cent compliant with, the Australasian Code for Reporting of Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves (JORC Code) (AusIMM, 1999). The paper also elaborates on the duties and responsibilities of Competent Persons signing off resource and reserve reports and on the new listing requirements of the Johannesburg Securities Exchange (JSE), formerly the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, which has officially adopted the Code.

"The Williams Gold Mine is located in the Hemlo camp of Northwestern Ontario and is one of Canada’s largest gold producers with annual gold production of 400,000 ounces. The operation is owned and operated as a 50:50 joint venture between Teck Cominco Limited and Barrick Gold Corporation.In July 2002, the decision was made to introduce paste backfill produced from mill tailings as the primary backfilling method in the mine and to decommission the existing cemented rock fill system. This required a fast track design to be completed for both a surface paste backfill plant and an underground paste distribution system followed by an intensive construction phase through the fall and winter of 2002/2003. The paste system was commissioned on schedule in late April 2003 and was in full production within 4 weeks of the initial start up. Overall, the project duration was only 42 weeks from initial project release to commissioning and it was completed $2 million under the budget of $14 million.This paper presents an overview of the lab testwork and process flowsheet design, process control methodology and describes the construction and commissioning phases of the project. Preliminary paste plant performance and operating cost data is also presented.IntroductionThe Williams Gold Mine is located in Northwestern Ontario adjacent to the Trans Canada Highway in the Hemlo Gold Camp as shown in figure 1. The mine currently produces approximately 400,000 ounces of gold annually and is owned and operated as a 50:50 joint venture between Teck Cominco and Barrick.The deposit was discovered as part of the Hemlo gold discovery in 1981 which led to the development of three mining operations within a 2 kilometre radius. The neighboring operations are the Golden Giant Mine, currently owned and operated by Newmont Gold, and the David Bell Mine, currently owned and operated by the same joint venture which is running Williams. David Bell ore is blended and milled in the Williams concentrator."

Under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), the international seabed area (Area) and its resources are the common heritage of humanity (CHH). Patent rights can be incompatible with the CHH doctrine and its underlying principles because patent holders might charge unjustifiably high prices to license patented technology for exploring and exploiting the Area’s resources (creating a "patent holdup" situation), might choose not to license, or might license exclusively when doing so would contravene CHH principles. However, a reasonable patent licensing regime can contribute to sharing the benefits derived from the Area and promote environmental sustainability. Provisions of the UNCLOS that stipulated compulsory technology and financial transfers were removed in the 1994 Agreement relating to the Implementation of Part XI of the UNCLOS but to promote equity and sustainability I propose a voluntary licensing regime modeled on the concept of reasonable and non-discriminatory patent licensing that has been used in other contexts. The International Seabed Authority or another entity will need to coordinate and promote this licensing regime through governance of intellectual property derived from the Area. This proposed approach can better effectuate the CHH doctrine and its underlying principles.

Svedala Industries has been making lightweight aggregate (LWA) from waste materials for the last ten years. Many clay-like materials, such as coal-fired boiler ash and washings from a granite quarry, can be used alone or with additional waste materials to produce a commercially saleable LWA.

A major spontaneous combustion incident occurred in the sealed goaf of the SL3 Panel; Southland Colliery in 2003 resulting in the loss of a longwall and sealing of the mine. The most important issue for the new owners, Yancoal Australia Pty. Ltd, was to effectively manage the atmosphere in the fire affected sealed area. This atmosphere comprised of flammable gases, the products of combustion and excessive levels of oxygen due to pressure differentials across the panel isolation seals with a potential ignition source associated with the residual spontaneous combustion event. The challenges were met in the first instance by the erection of pressure balance chambers with limited success. The problem was not solved until the pressure chambers were pressurized using a Floxal Nitrogen Plant supplied by Air Liquide Australia. Given the success of this approach on a small scale, a higher capacity Air Liquide Floxal Unit was acquired to manage spontaneous combustion at the recommencement of longwall mining operations. This provided the ability to pressurize pressure chambers that were installed in the Maingate Seals behind the face of the adjacent Longwall Block effectively preventing the ingress of oxygen and permitting the goaf to self inert in a reasonable time period. This paper summarizes a new proactive method of mitigating the risks associated with active and sealed goaves. Proactive management of these areas using low flow nitrogen into pressure chambers to maintain a positive pressure has eliminated typical reliance in explosion proof or explosion resistance seals as the primary control.

The paper describes the adopted technologies and performance controls related to a special geotechnical engineering solution provided within the scope of the Galataport Project, in Istanbul, Turkey. The scheme is the one applied to the new quay of Salipazari, which is a combination of retaining structure and ground improvement, formed by a combi-wall, a reinforced concrete diaphragm wall and a soil improvement by deep soil mixing (Turbojet). The paper highlights the importance of employing cutting-edge technologies within the foundation engineering field and state-of-the-art electronic control devices, in parallel with the essential human expertise, in order to obtain the desired results in this high profile Project. The results of the in-situ and laboratory tests carried out on the improved soil are also presented. Main discussed points are: • History of Galataport and main Project details. • Design principle and soil condition for the new quay of Salipazari. • Difficulties encountered during execution of DSM. • Preliminary field trial tests conducted to establish the operational parameters, with relevant in-situ and laboratory tests executed. • Preliminary tests on material used for DSM (seawater and CEM IV SR). • Electronic equipment mounted on the rig, which allows the automatic execution of DSM columns. • Final QA/QC tests conducted to verify the performance of DSM, mainly consisting in: coring with relevant laboratory tests on samples (UCS + Es), seismic refraction tomography and seismic cross hole tomography. Correlations between UCS and Es, and between Es and Edyn are also presented. • A cross section of the executed treatment could be inspected on site during excavation. The upper amphibolite-grade mctasediments of thc rinaroo area, North Queensland, form part of a regional aurcole to the large Tinaroo Batholith and are the stratigraphic equivalents of the Hodgkinson Formation of gencrally low metamorphic grade. There is no evidence of any lithological unconformity.The higher grade metasediments have a more complex deformation history than is typical for thc surrounding region and this may bc due to one or a combination of two factors; an additional strain componcnt associated wilh the intrusion of Ihe Tinaroo Batholith, or a more marked finite strain response to the overall regional stress field within hotter. more ductile rocks.Four deformational events can be characterized within Ihc Tinaroo Area. Close to Ihe Tinaroo Batholith D1 and D2, arc so strongly developed that they disrupl the continuily of Ihe original Iithological layering. In the aureole region, D1 is strongly overprinted and its original fabric intensity is obscured, but both D2 and D3 display a mappable decrease in intensity away from the granite margin. These three deformations occurred during Carboniferous or early Permian time. D4 is later and only patchily developed.The broad, moderate pressure metamorphic aureole surrounding the Tinaroo Batholith is a typical of the CairnsCooktown group of Permo-Carboniferous granitoids. which usually develop narrow, lower pressure contact aureoles. Two periods of metamorphism are distinguishable. The first reached peak temperatures somewhat greater than 520°C, the second temperatures around 620-630° C immediately adjacent to the granite contact.Several cale-silicate lenses containing scattered scheelite mineralization occur within the area. Scheelite appears to have crystallized at the same time as the cale-silicate minerals, its appearance coinciding with the intrusion of the Tinaroo Batholith. Unlike many "skarn-type" scheelite deposits, the scheelite-bearing cale-silicates are Fe-poor, with no positive correlation between total Fe and W.

This paper presents the results of a study using computer human modeling to examine machine appendage speed. The objective was to determine the impact of roof bolter machine appendage speed on the likelihood of the operator coming in contact with. A contact means two or more objects intersecting or touching each other, e.g., appendage makes contact with the operator?s hand, arm, head or leg. Incident investigation reports do not usually contain enough information to aid in studying this problem and laboratory experiments with human subjects are also not feasible because of safety and ethical issues. As an alternative, researchers developed a computer model approach as the primary means to gather data. By simulating an operator?s random behavior and machine?s appendage velocity, researchers can study potential hazards of tasks where it is not possible to perform experiments with human subjects. Analysis information is helpful to the mining industry in terms of making recommendations that reduce the likelihood that roof-bolter operators experience injury due to contact with a moving boom. Data analysis of roof bolter simulations show that the virtual-operator?s response time has little effect on the number of contacts experienced. Based on frequency and cross-tabulation, regardless of other variables, contact incidents were always greater when the boom was moving up, were always greater on the palm, and were always greater for the boom part of the machine. Also, regardless of boom speed, the 25th-percentile-sized operators experienced more contacts than did other operator sizes. Furthermore, regardless of boom speed, the 152-cm mine seam experienced more contacts than did other seam heights tested. Results of a survival analytic approach suggest that controlling the boom speed is the most important factor in determining the risk of an operator making contact. Based on the data collected, boom speed greater than 41 cm/s results in a substantial increase in risk to the roof bolter operator and should probably be avoided. At speeds less than or equal to 25 cm/s are associated with a more modest relative risk, which represents an acceptable level of risk. Also, at speeds between 25 and 41 cm/s, there could be a particular boom speed in this range at which a significant inflection point in the relative risk estimates occurs. Based on the results, this issue needs to be addressed by future research.

"The exploration of seamounts south of the Azores during the EMEPC/Açores/G3/2007 campaign allowed for the collection of 30 Fe-Mn crusts from the Atlantis, Great Meteor, Small Hyeres, Irving and Plato seamounts, as well as from the East Azores Fracture Zone. These were the first samples of Fe-Mn crusts studied from these seamounts. The Fe-Mn crusts were analyzed using multiple analytical methods.The crusts are fairly homogeneous, showing typical textures for this type of occurrences. The Fe/Mn ratio, patterns and concentrations in rare earth elements, and the great homogeneity of the crusts lead to the conclusion that they have a hydrogenetic origin, precipitating directly from seawater. Although the content in Fe and Mn of the crusts is consistent with data available for the Atlantic, the mean concentration of Co is comparable to the average values for the Pacific. Cu and Ni show lower values than the ones known for the Pacific."

"The Kemess mining and milling complex is operated by Northgate Minerals Corporation and is located in the mountains of north-central British Columbia, 430 kilometers northwest of Prince George. The complex consists of the Kemess South open pit mine and a 52,000 tonnes per day mill. Hypogene, supergene and leach cap ores are processed using conventional crushing, grinding, and flotation techniques to produce gold-copper concentrates with minor by-product silver value.The rougher flotation concentrate is re-ground in closed circuit before being cleaned to final concentrate grade. Historically, gold losses in the cleaner tailings were primarily associated with pyrite, with only minor amounts of free gold. More recently, with the processing of high pyrite ores, the major losses were found to be free gold less than 10 microns in size. The fine grind required for the high pyrite ores resulted in over-grinding of the free gold particles in the regrind circuit, contributing to poor flotation characteristics. It was thought that if this free gold could be recovered by gravity at coarser size in the regrind circulating load, the free gold losses in the cleaner tailings could be reduced.Preliminary test work carried out by Knelson Gravity Solutions indicated the potential for free gold recovery in the regrind circuit. A Knelson XD-30 Concentrator was installed with variable speed capability, and a series of optimization tests were carried out. In addition, cleaner tailings were characterized with gravity operating and with gravity not operating to determine the overall gold recovery benefit. The single Knelson XD-30 installation recovers ~10% of the total gold in the regrind circuit and increases overall recovery by 3% when high pyrite ores are processed."

Construction of the Boddington Mine 130 km (81 miles) southeast of Perth, is about 89 percent complete. When the $2.9-billion development is finished, it will be the largest gold mine in Australia, producing 31 t/a (1 million oz/year), according to project majority owner Newmont Mining. Newmont?s acting regional group executive for Asia Pacific, Philip Stephenson, told a gold conference in Australia that the project would be ?the biggest thing for Newmont this year.? The project has been in the works for more than 10 years, but because of a three-sided ownership and fluctuating gold prices, it struggled to get started. However, Newmont is set to become the full owner of the project and is moving ahead on the low-grade project. ?We are targeting annual production of 31 t/a (1 million oz/year) for each of Boddington?s first five years. When it is in full production, Boddington will be the largest gold mine in Australia,? Stephenson said. ?The mine?s costs applicable to sales will be around US$9.64/g (US$300/oz) and that puts Boddington into the bottom quartile of the global cost curve. ?Strategically for Newmont, Boddington coming on-line will improve Newmont?s overall global geopolitical risk profile as it delivers greater exposure to an AAA-rated country.? Boddington has a projected mine life of 20 plus years. It has current total reserves of 622 t (20 million oz) and rising. Stephenson said Boddington has the largest reserve base of all gold projects in production or those that are about to go into production in A-rated countries or better. And it will be an important asset for many years to come. Newmont will acquire the remaining 33 percent share held by AngloGold Ashanti in a deal that should be concluded in the next two months. Australian miner Newcrest Mining Ltd. had exited the joint venture several years ago. The “China & East Asia Mineral and Energy Re-sources Symposium — CEAR 2000” was held Jan. 23-26, 2000 in Denver, CO. Conference sponsors included Resources and Technology Symposia of Colorado and the Asian Journal of Mining. The meeting was attended by representatives from China, Japan, Mongolia, Korea, eastern Russia (Siberia) and the United States. The US attendees consisted of interested parties from mining and energy companies, financial institutions, consultants and government agencies. In his opening statements, L. Maness, Jr., president of Resources and Technology Symposia of Colorado, said that the “goal of the conference was to make jobs and friendships and to introduce people to each other.” The conference provided an opportunity for Western mining interests, including mining companies and investors, to meet with government agencies from both sides of the Pacific.

Ventilation survey using tracer gas measurement is one of the techniques for mine ventilation design, monitoring and investigation of movement of fresh air and contaminants. However, there has been little research into using both tracer gas monitoring and numerical simulation. In this research, tracer gas technique was used for quantitative assessment of airflows through narrow vein shrinkage stopes with various opening shapes and friction factors. SF6 was used as a tracer gas to monitor airflow through three narrow vein shrinkage stopes in order to obtain diffusion concentration curves against elapsed time. The mine ventilation simulator, MIVENA Ver.6, was used to construct the entire ventilation network of the mine to monitor airflows through the stopes. The diffusion concentration curves against elapsed time were simulated with a numerical model. The result shows that the concentration-time curve is unsymmetrical and is skewed to the front of the flow direction. From the results of history-matching between the measured and the simulated curves, volume flow rates of airways and stopes were evaluated. Importantly, the tailing effect of the concentration-time curve between the measured and simulated is greatly improved by reconstructing an equivalent airflow route to represent unused mine openings, dead end drives and other open spaces. Finally, it can be concluded that openings, dead end drives and other open spaces have no relation on flow rates, but affect the airflow quality provided from the inlet portal as shown by tracer gas diffusion characteristics.

In this study, the development of a new method for investigating the diffusion of metal cations in multi-component slag systems, using microprobe analysis is discussed. This method allows the analysis of the diffusion of multiple species within a single system. This project has focused on the diffusion characteristics of manganese, iron, calcium and silicon in silicate slags, in order to simulate industrial steel and ferromanganese production. The diffusion behaviour of transition metals is of particular interest because of the effects of their variable valence. This study identified the variation in diffusivity of slag components with changes in composition and temperature of multi-component slag systems. The molecular structure of the experimental calcium-aluminosilicate slags was investigated to determine the chemical and physical properties that influence diffusion behaviour. This experimental data was used to develop predictive models for diffusivity. These models enable the estimation of the diffusivity of many slag components in complex slags, over a range of compositions.

Pyrite Bioleaching and Slag Neutralisation - Two Treatments in a Single Process for Recovering Valuable Metals from Both Materials Very often the production of copper sulfide concentrate yields pyrite concentrate as a by-product. This is the case at the Knre mine in northern Turkey. This kind of concentrate may contain low grades of valuable non-ferrous metals. Bioleaching of such pyrite concentrates is a processing technique to solubilise metals like copper, zinc or cobalt in a sulfuric acid pregnant solution. The pyrometallurgical processing of copper sulfide concentrate produces slag that still contains valuable metals in varying concentrations. Slag is used in many ways: as aggregates, ballast, pavement material, in cement production and glass making. Due to its relatively alkaline nature, it can also be used to neutralise acidic solutions. A preliminary study of the bioleaching of the pyrite concentrate (Co 0.28 per cent, Cu 0.56 per cent and sulfur as sulfide 42.6 per cent) produced at Knre has been undertaken with the assessment of the neutralisation of the acidic bioleach solution by using old slag (Co 0.29 per cent, Cu 1.70 per cent and sulfur as sulfide 0.89 per cent) stockpiled on the site. The main conclusions of the study were as follows: Knre pyrite was amenable to bioleaching at 40¦C. Cobalt solubilisation directly related to pyrite degradation reached a maximum yield above 90 per cent. Final copper recovery was limited to approximately 66 per cent not directly related to bacterial growth and pyrite oxidation. Slag could be used as a substitute for limestone as a neutralising agent in the bioleaching tanks. Cobalt and copper could be recovered from pyrite concentrate and slag simultaneously from both materials. A pre-feasibility study is underway to carry out a preliminary cost estimate of an installation for cobalt and copper production from these two materials processed in a single operation.

A Bureau of Mines investigation identified no mineral deposits in the Lost Creek RARE II area. Sand and gravel has been mined from alluvial flood plain deposits just outside the RARE II boundary. An oil and gas lease application which includes the eastern portion of the RARE II area is pending. Abundant basalt in the area can be crushed and used as aggregate; but it could not compete with similar deposits in more favorable locations, or with cheaper substitutes such as volcanic cinders or sand and gravel which are available outside the study area closer to major markets. No indication of coal or geothermal energy resources was found. INTRODUCTION Location and Access The Lost Creek RARE II area encompasses 8,300 acres (3,400 ha) of Lassen National Forest in north-central California, about 20 mi (30 km) north of Lassen Peak. The closest city is Redding, California, 50 air mi (80 km) southwest. Peripheral access is provided by State Highway 89 passing near the western RARE II boundary (fig. 1). The Pacific Crest Trail traverses the western margin of Hat Creek Rim adjacent to the eastern boundary of the area.
