During the past few years, the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has been evaluating developments in sealant support systems from a ground control perspective. The proper selection and use of a sealant material can significantly enhance ground control which may result in a decrease in worker related injuries due to ground falls. The purpose of this paper is threefold: to briefly review the current state-of-the-art technology in shotcrete and membrane developments, to evaluate the preliminary findings of a long-term underground study of various types of sealant materials, and to examine installation practices that are critical for an effective sealant material. The underground study utilizes NIOSH’s Lake Lynn Laboratory Experimental Mine to evaluate the long-term performance of several types of shotcrete and membrane materials. Sealant performance to date have been evaluated on a regular basis over a two year period. Although the study is still ongoing, critical mining practices were identified that may seriously effect the bond of the sealant materials to the mine roof and rib; most notably, the importance of scaling and thorough cleaning of the rib prior to application. Also, results froman extensive series of Schmidt Hammer tests found that the shotcrete increased in strength by 70% during the humid summer months.

Explosives energy can be used effectively in breaking and displacing large volumes of rock in mining and quarrying industries in both open pit and underground. The blast result, however, may not be economical if the applied explosives energy distribution is not properly applied to match a given set of geometries. However, this engineering problem can be resolved by using a modeling approach in the blast design process. Starting with a given set of blast design parameters that include explosive, elastic properties of rock, geometry of the blast pattern as well as the delay firing time, this paper shows how a discrete element blast model can be set up to allow the examination of the effect of critical design input parameters on blast results. Examples are given in this paper to help visualize the value and application of blast simulations. They are (1) regular and terrace bench blasting models for throw control, (2) underground blasting including a drop raise opening and (3) collapsing of a multiple room-pillar structure with proper firing sequence to control the mixing of blasted materials.

In Kansas, almost every oil well drilled into a limestone formation is treated with hydrochloric (muriatic) acid upon completion. This is done to increase the potential capacity of the well and thereby increase its "daily allowable" production (see p. 9 ), to shorten the time required to produce the recoverable oil, and to increase the quantity of oil recovered ultimately from the reservoir. The porosity and. permeability of limestone formations seldom are uniform throughout the proved area, consequently the production capacities of completed wells vary considerably. Previous studies and research efforts have shown that noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is a problem in the U.S. mining industry. This is especially true in surface and underground coal and stone mining where large, noisy equipment predominate. Workers in coal preparation and stone processing plants have also been found to be subject to high sound levels that could potentially cause NIHL over prolonged periods of exposure. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers have been conducting a cross-sectional survey of equipment noise and worker noise exposures in the mining industry to estimate the potential for NIHL within the mining community. One commodity recently surveyed was the extraction of sand and gravel from surface pits and by river dredging. Little is known about the noise environment and worker exposures in these environments, where processing and mining equipment similar to coal and stone are employed. To address the potential for NIHL in the sand and gravel industry, sound levels on and around the dredges and processing equipment were recorded to identify areas of high noise levels. Full-shift worker dosimetry, in conjunction with task observations, was documented to determine the relationship between exposure and source. This paper presents research examining noise on dredges, in several surface mine sand and gravel operations and in the processing facilities. The locations where workers are likely to be overexposed and were found to be most susceptible to noise overexposures are reported. Results indicate that there are areas on the dredges (crane, suction pumps, and diesel engines) where sound levels greater than 90 dB(A) are present. In addition, crushers and screens used in the processing of the sand and gravel also generate sound levels greater than 90 dB(A). Although no surveyed worker exceeded the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) Permissible Exposure Level (PEL) of 90 dB(A) TWA8, laborers, mechanics, oilers, helpers, pickers, and greasers are the workers likely to be exposed to hazardous sound levels and thus develop NIHL over time. Knowledge of the equipment noise, area sound levels, and worker dose levels is information that management and employees can use to reduce exposures. Exposures can be reduced in certain areas through administrative controls and through engineering controls applied to the noisiest equipment.

Small scale gold mining operations in Papua New Guinea (PNG) have been observed to use very low flow rates of water in sluice boxes. In a series of laboratory experiments carried out to determine whether this approach was unsatisfactory or not for their situation, indications were obtained that it had some advantages in the recovery of fine gold but at the cost of considerable throughput. The separation mechanisms operating in such a system are analysed.

In order to estimate the deformation and load distribution of a single pile subjected to dynamic horizontal load as well as vertical load, a simplified method of three-dimensional numerical analysis, KWaveHybrid program, is developed using a hybrid model. In the hybrid model, the pile is modelled as elastic beams, and the soil at each pile node is treated as springs and dashpots in both vertical and horizontal directions. KWaveHybrid is also able to analyse the static response of the pile. Validity of the newly developed program is examined through comparisons with theoretical values and horizontal dynamic and static pile load test results

Goldcorp Inc.?s Red Lake Mine (RLM) is situated in the Red Lake Mining District, a history rich North Western Ontario mining community. Red Lake Mine formerly known as the Dickenson Mine has experienced various degree and type of bursting since the 1960?s. During the 1960?s burst were common in shrinkage stope box hole pillars. After discovering the High Grade Zone (HGZ) between its 30th and 39th levels, the mine has changed its mining method to mechanized cut and fill with cemented paste fill. The rock mass at RLM is mainly massive basalt-ultramafic and behaves in a manner consistent with massive brittle rock. This paper presents the use of empirical and numerical design techniques. The use of the Span versus RMR graph to determine critical stope spans at RLM and the use of numerical design techniques to determine the stability of the sills and post pillars. Selecting of a sill pillar dimension is illustrated using four different failure criteria?s. The four failure criteria are m & s failure criteria, the Pillar Stability Graph, deviatoric stress ???-?3), and induced stress level criteria ?1 /UCS, which are calibrated to RLM?s ground conditions. A wide range of case histories has been studied ranging from stable to highly burst prone ground conditions in order to calibrate the failure criteria to observed conditions and quantified to local micro seismic system.

"Over the last six years, the Kansanshi copper/gold mine has continued to process significant quantities of complex transitional mixed ores. The effect of the complex mineralogy on the flotation performance is depicted. Initially, ore treated came predominantly from accumulated stockpiles. In the ensuing years, ore treated shifted to primarily freshly mined ore that generally showed less tarnish with better float kinetics but with the downside of producing lower concentrate grades. A number of changes were made to improve the efficiency of the roughing circuit and quality of concentrate produced. These changes were as a result of initial mineralogical studies and laboratory float test work done and discussed at length in a previous paper. Salient among the adopted recommendations from previous work were increasing circuit capacity and modifying configuration to increase the residence time and the number of sulphidisation stages. These modifications were completed and commissioned in 2011. This, however, resulted in significantly low rougher concentrate grades and subsequently below-specification final concentrate product. This was primarily due to higher mass pulls resulting from the extended rougher bank with multiple concentrate discharge streams. This necessitated the need for an enlarged cleaning capability to offset this. The extra cleaning capacity came on-stream in 2014. Of note was the development of a recovery model, based on the strong correlation between the total copper and acid-soluble copper ratio, as a tool for monitoring plant performance. INTRODUCTION The Kansanshi mine, the largest copper mine in Africa, is 80% owned by Kansanshi Mining PLC, a First Quantum subsidiary. The remaining 20% is owned by the state through the parastatal ZCCM. The mine is located approximately 10 km north of the town of Solwezi and 180 km to the northwest of the Copperbelt town of Chingola. The mine has been in commercial operation since 2005. Prior to June 2009, Kansanshi mine treated only two ore types: oxide and sulphide. All transitional ores mined during the period leading up to 2009 were stockpiled. The treatment of the minerologically complex, transitional ores through a third train commenced in June 2009 but with numerous metallurgical challenges. This transitional ore (called mixed ores) could not be previously treated economically due to high gangue acid consumption (GAC) minerals association (making it unsuitable for the oxide float–leach circuit) and poor flotation response ruling out the conventional sulphide float circuit. The new novel circuit involved a conventional sulphide pre-float followed by flotation involving staged controlled potential sulphidisation (CPS)."

"Adsorption of heavy metal ions specifically, Cu(II), Zn(II), Mn(II), and Cr(VI) from aqueous solution on synthetic 4A Zeolite was evaluated. The 4A zeolite was synthesized previously by dehydroxylation of low grade Kalabsha Kaolin at 800 °C, and reacted hydrothermally with 2-4 M NaOH solution at 100 °C for 2h. The adsorption capacity of the metal ions were found to be strongly dependent on pH and initial metal ion concentration. At the optimium conditions the adsorption capacity decreased in the order Cu(II) > Zn(II) > Mn(II) > Cr(VI) ions. Almost complete adsorption was achieved for both of Cu(II) and Zn(II) ions at pH > 6, while the adsorption capacity for both Mn(II) and Cr(VI) was 96, and 55.3 % at pH 11 and pH 3, respectively. The results also showed that the grain size of the 4A zeolite has a little effect on the adsorption capacity. The experimental data was compared with two adsorption isotherms, Langmuir and Freundlich isotheroms. The results showed a good agreement of the Langmuir plots with the experimental data.1. Increasing level of heavy metals in natural water bodies poses a serious threat to all living species including humans. A key environmental management issue associated with mining projects is tailing disposal. In high rainfall environments this is particularly challenging and generally requires the discharge of excess water from a tailing dam to adjacent streams or coastal waters. Such discharges can potentially have adverse impacts on downstream water quality and the environmental values associated with these waters, such as providing a drinking water supply for local villagers, maintaining a fisheries resource or protecting a fish species of high conservation significance. An alternative to the construction and operation of a conventional tailing dam is Deep Sea Tailing Placement (DSTP). The key features of such a system are:Discharge of the tailing slurry at considerable depth (approximately 120 - 150 m) below the oceanÆs surface. This requires a pipeline to be laid from the process plant to a mix tank, where the tailing is mixed with seawater and entrained air released. The pipeline then continues down the ocean floor to the required discharge depth, which is below the surface mixed layer and the euphotic zone. After discharge, formation of a density current which continues to descend along the ocean floor as long as the slope is sufficiently steep. Final deposition of the tailing in an area where the slope of the ocean floor is insufficient to maintain the density current. This typically occurs at depths of more than 800 m. Water quality issues associated with DSTP include: Impacts on the oceanic water column due to the formation of subsurface plumes which break away from the descending density current. The occurrence of elevated concentrations of contaminants in the interstitial waters of the deposited tailing solids. Fluxes of contaminants from the tailing deposits into the overlying oceanic water column. This paper discusses the water quality aspects of DSTP with particular reference to a case study in Papua New Guinea. The evaluations undertaken as part of the DSTP impact assessment included consideration of both the short- and long-term chemical behaviour of contaminants and bioassays, within the appropriate water quality assessment framework.

Secondly, a model able to reproduce time dependence behaviour. Eventually, the paper gives a simulation of an academic reservoir during depletion and waterflooding phase. "The gravity-recoverable gold (GRG) ore characterization test was developed 15 years ago and has been applied to hundreds of ore samples. The test accurately determines the size distribution of GRG, at which grind it is recoverable, and the extent of its liberation above 150 µm. This contribution shows how the test can be simplified, what are the likely problems to occur, and what information is then lost. Two simplified versions of the test are presented, of which the simplest, grinding a 20-kg sample to a P80 of 75 µm, is retained as the best one. A database of 18 comparative tests is presented. The choice of the full GRG test vs. the simple test is discussed, as is the deportment of the GRG recovered in the standard test but not in the simplest test.INTRODUCTIONThe GRG test was developed in 1990 to characterize the progressive liberation of gold in representative samples of ores, with the primary objective of generating data for a gold gravity recovery model (Woodcock and Laplante, 1993; Laplante et al., 2000). Characterization includes the size distribution of GRG as well as the grind size at which it becomes recoverable. This is achieved in a 3-stage protocol of liberation and recovery using a laboratory centrifuge unit, a Laboratory Knelson Concentrator 3 inches in diameter (KC MD3). This protocol is shown in Figure 1. The first stage takes place at a F100 of 850 ?m (F80 of ~550 ?m), the second at F80 of 180 ?m, and the third at a P80 of 75 ?m. The rationale for the three cycles is the desire to preserve the original size distribution of the gold grains in the ore and to obtain a recovery grind size curve. The feed is a representative sample of ore that can be extracted from ore samples (e.g. drill core reject) or stream products of the grinding circuit other than circulating loads or product having undergone hydraulic classification (e.g. rod mill discharge or SAG screen undersize). Ideally the samples should weigh between 60 and 100 kg, depending on feed grade and gold top size. It is beyond the scope of this paper to fully discuss measures of representativity in the ore sample, for example Gy’s minimum sample mass model (Gy, 1979). However, further work in this regard may be an opportunity. The large initial weight facilitates representativity and minimizes weight and sulphide recovery to the concentrate (since concentrate weight is relatively constant at ~100 g), which limits the recovery of gold in nonsulphide gangue or gold carriers (i.e. sulphides). Thus, the 100 g concentrate carries principally discrete gold species, such as electrum, and native gold. The concentrate and a 600-g representative sample of gangue of each stage are screened down to 20 ?m and each size class is fire assayed (the concentrates to extinction, the tails up to 30 g per size class). The five coarsest size fractions of stage-1 concentrate are individually upgraded using a hydrosizer and the concentrates examined with an optical microscope to assess the degree of liberation of the gold phase. Scanning electron microscope work has established that the GRG has an excellent degree of liberation below 150 ?m in stage 1 and generally a good degree of liberation in stages 2 and 3 (Guerney et al., 2003); as a result the size distribution of the GRG has been found to approach closely that of gold grains (Nesset et al. 2005)."

A new system for granting access to mineral rights is proposed in the recently released White Paper, ?A Minerals and Mining Policy for South Africa?. Official policy states that ?Government?s long-term objective is for all mineral rights to vest in the State for the benefit of and on behalf of all the people of South Africa?. In order to achieve this objective, government is presently investigating the feasibility of imposing a financial or tax-related disincentive to holding mineral rights. The paper aims to present the pros and cons and to examine the alternatives which will cause minimal disruption to the minerals industry in the period during which mineral rights are transferred to the State. South Africa is a country whose economic and political history is embedded in the development of its mineral resources and has inherited a system which cannot simply be wished away. Hasty or radical decisions will compound the problem, rather than provide a lasting and widely acceptable solution. Mineral rights ownership and its impact on access to mineral deposits are discussed. Taxation as a possible economic disincentive is also evaluated. Finally, the value of mineral resource related information as a prerequisite to mineral policy decisions and as an alternative to mineral rights taxation is emphasized.

Online cyanide analysers have been successfully used to control free cyanide in the gold/silver leach process for over 15 years. Use of such analysers leads to cyanide savings and improvement in recoveries. Plants with leach cyanide analysers show both lower and more consistent cyanide levels in tailings. Cyanide code compliance requires meeting residual cyanide targets in tailings. Monitoring and logging of the residual cyanide in plant tailings and effluent is required. Meeting targets may require cyanide recovery/destruction processes to be implemented. The operating cost of destroying cyanide is often the same order of magnitude as the cyanidation cost. Various cyanide destruction and/or recovery processes are reviewed. Choice of a process consistent with the environmental and operational requirements is illustrated. Online weak acid dissociable cyanide (CNWAD) analysers have recently been developed and introduced on gold plants. The application of a WAD 1000 online CNWAD analyser at a large gold plant is presented. The analyser ensures code compliance, reduces cyanide destruction process operating costs and forms a historical record of CNWAD values in tailings.

Recent exploration has identified the presence of detrital iron deposits (DIDs) associated with banded iron formation (BIF) units in the north-west of the Congo Craton, Gabon. The regional geology comprises a complex of granitoids and gneisses assigned to the Archaean Chaillu Complex, within which older slivers of lower amphibolite-grade greenstones are preserved including muscovite-biotite-garnet-bearing felsic schist, amphibolite and BIF. These units are typically overlain by several metres of residuum comprising colluvium, eluvium and duricrust. The residuum is overlain by a regionally extensive loess cover from 2 m to 10 m thick.The DIDs occur within the weathered residuum as mostly unconsolidated gravels with lesser canga (CAN) duricrust draped over deeply weathered hematite. Head grades are in the range of 45 to 52 per cent Fe. Fresh BIF, located from 30 to 50 m below surface, is comprised of magnetite-quartz±amphibole. The detrital iron gravels are comprised of rod- and plate-shaped clasts of hematite (martite)-maghemite-goethite composition, in a ferruginous sand to clay-sized matrix. The DID form ridges and plateaus that coincide with magnetic highs defined using high-resolution ground magnetic surveys.The field relations and petrography indicate that the detrital iron accumulations are the result of weathering (including enrichment) and erosion of primary BIF. This includes removal of quartz, further oxidation and re-cementation of BIF to form ferruginous caprock. This cap and the in situ oxidised BIF were subsequently disaggregated and liberated, and further weathered to form the detrital iron accumulations.Metallurgical test work on bulk detrital iron samples has shown this material can be upgraded to lump and fines iron ore products with grades of 62 to 65 per cent Fe using simple scrubbing and wet screening, followed by dense media separation of the -1 mm fraction, with overall mass yields from 75 to 85 per cent. Cobb County, located on the northwest side of Atlanta, GA, is continually growing and, like many other metropolitan areas, it needs to increase the capacity of its waste water system to meet future demand. The Cobb County Water System (CCWS) is the responsible agency for water distribution, waste water collection and treatment in most areas of the county. CCWS, one of the most progressive agencies in the metro-Atlanta area, is addressing its future waste water capacity needs in the southern part of the county with the construction of the South Cobb Tunnel and Pump Station. This project consists of an 8.8-km- (5.5-mile-) long, 8.2-m- (27-ft-) diameter, tunnel boring machine (TBM) excavated waste water storage and conveyance tunnel; six tangential vortex-flow intakes ranging from 1,533 to 5,700 L/s (35 to 130 mgd) peak flow capacity, two construction shafts, six 1.8-m (6-ft) finished diameter connecting tunnels ranging in length from 6 to 975 m (20 to 3,200 ft) and a 5,700-L/s (130-mgd) wet/dry pit pump station. The pump station will have a semi-circular wet well with a dividing wall that extends almost to the top of the shaft and a spilt dry well for reliable operation. Roller gates will control the flow to the wet well from the tunnel. The pump station will have six 1,420 L/s (32.5 mgd) pumps and two sets of stair wells and elevators. With a finished diameter of 32 m (104 ft) and a depth of 62 m (204 ft), this is the largest pump station shaft constructed so far in Georgia for the dewatering of a waste water tunnel. The pump station shaft was also the highlight of the well attended and successful 2009 Shaft Design and Construction Short Course held in Atlanta, Sept. 10-11. The two-day course was sponsored by the Underground Construction Association of SME and Pennsylvania State University and concluded with a field trip to the pump station shaft. The tunnel starts south of the city of Austell and finishes at the South Cobb Water Reclamation Facility (WRF), located on the banks of the [ ] Chattahoochee River just north of Interstate 20 (Fig. 1). The South Cobb Tunnel will run 30 to 137 m (100 to 450 ft) below the surface, with an average depth of about 91 m (300 ft), through metamorphic rocks (Fig 2). The construction contract was awarded to Shea-Traylor JV with the lowest bid price of $305 million and notice-to-proceed was given on July 14, 2008. Jordan Jones & Goulding, Inc. (JJG) is the project designer and performed the geotechnical investigations. Parsons/Jacobs Associates is the construction manager. The South Cobb Tunnel is CCWS?s second deep hard rock tunnel. The 15.3-km- (9.5-mile-) long, 5.5-m- (18-ft-) diameter TBM excavated the Chattahoochee Tunnel was the first deep tunnel to be construced in Cobb County. Construction began in 2000 and the project was completed four years later. It is located about 16 km (10 miles) northeast of the South Cobb Tunnel in similar geology. It was designed by JJG to meet east Cobb?s long-term waste water capacity needs and provide flow equalization to the R.L. Sutton WRF. The Chattahoochee Tunnel was named ?Outstanding Civil Engineering Project of the Year? by the Georgia Sec-tion of the American Society of Civil Engineers in 2006.

In January 2007, Fultondale Alabama opened a new elementary school. Site work at the old school location included blasting activities and the old school building was scheduled for demolition. With help from Apache Construction, blasting was scheduled to be performed in close proximity to the old school building prior to the demolition. Arrangements were made to perform extensive monitoring on the old school building during the blasting activities. The monitoring plan for the project included: • Pre and post blast inspections were performed on the structure; • Conventional crack monitors were installed at 22 locations throughout the structure; • Digital displacement monitors were installed at 6 locations on the structure; and • Seismographs were used to monitor structure vibration at 6 locations and ground vibrations at 9 locations. Blasting activities were allowed to produce vibration levels well above the safe levels established by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM). Vibration levels up to 7.44 in/sec were recorded with no damage noted. Permanent deformation was recorded on vibration levels of 9.68 and above. Not only did this project reinforce previous studies which indicate that concrete block walls can withstand vibration levels well above 2.0 in/sec, this study was also a good example of employing new technology to help determine if/when damage occurs on a specific structure.

"A B6 Falcon concentrator was tested on several systems: a synthetic magnetite-silica ore, a massive sulphide gold-copper ore, a fine gold-pyrite-silica flotation tail, and a high grade gold ore in a low sulphide gangue (cyclone overflow).The Falcon demonstrated its ability to achieve separation in all cases, but with varying degrees of success. For the magnetite-silica system, separation proceeds until the concentrate bed overloads, at a mass of 300 to 400 g of magnetite. Recovery increased with decreasing particle size, down to the 25-37 µm and in some cases even the -25 µm class. Bowl geometry (angle) and gangue size distribution were the most significant operating variables. Results with the massive sulphide ore were the poorest, with gold recoveries typically around 10 to 20% at very low upgrading ratios, 1: 1 to 5: I. Gold recovery from the fine flotation tail ranged from 30 to 70% at upgrading ratios of 5 to 15; actual plant application would require a continuous unit (Falcon C20). The high grade gold cyclone overflow yielded a wide range of gold recoveries, but a very consistent relationship between recovery and mass processed. A concentrate of 0.5% Au could be processed at a recovery of 50%.The paper also presents results of a C20 application to recover fine iron from a magnetic tail. The unit is capable of recovering approximately 70% of the fine liberated iron in a high density product, with modest upgrading below 105 µm, and virtually complete rejection of the + 300 µ m product."
