Despite enormous efforts over the last decades there are still many unanswered questions with respect to calculation and modeling of the blast process using appropriate physical laws. Most calculations of explosive charges of a blast design are based on experience, empirical observations or blasting theories with serious shortcomings. This paper presents a new theory for the design and calculation of a rock blast that is based on the momentum. It offers a clear-cut method for the calculation of blast processes. The theoretical results will be compared with on-site measurements by means of a newly developed strain sensor and further measuring equipment. The momentum theory helps better to explain physically the processes of a blast. On the basis of long-term statistical investigations a momentum balance can be carried out with the volume-based blasting momentum and the measurable momentum associated with the muckpile and the remaining rock mass. This type of consideration requires a complex procedure which includes the blastability of the rock masses. Realis tic strain measurements open a new interpretation possibility and judgment criteria for the most probable building damage, the dynamic impact on general types of buildings and also for the blast process itself. The blast-induced stress and the momentum generated could be back-calculated using a geophone profile and the strain sensor. The strain owing to a dynamic impact can be influenced by the changing of the drill-, blast- and shotfiring technique like the until now measured vibration velocity. In this way it is possible today to make a complex preparation, calculation and evaluation of blasts. The new techniques of measuring in connection with the momentum theory bring about an increase of the safety and a clearcut method of improving the blast processes. This procedure offers new possibilities for the precise calculation, simulation and modelling of blasts and resulting vibrations and leads to an increase of the safety as well as economic adaptation of the drill-, blast- and shotfiring techniques to a pre-determined blasting result.

Acid production or acid drainage is a major environmental issue that also has negative implications on the aquifer system surrounding the mine tailings area. The approach to controlling acid mine drainage involves physical and geochemical characterization that affect acid production. The material permeability determines the availability of oxygen, which is paramount in acid production in coal rejects, and varies with depth. In this paper the author presents the variation in oxidized pyrite/acid production with depth in black coal mine washery wastes. Chemical kinetic parameters and the diffusive parameters have been used to obtain the variation in oxygen content and the oxidized pyrite content with respect to the depth and time. Its dependence on porosity and moisture content is illustrated.

"To reach the Hemlo Gold Inc. objective of becoming the lowest cost, safest Canadian gold producer while causing no environmental damage, management embarked from its inception on a strategy to build an organization which would foster employee involvement wherever possible. This paper describes the organizational structure and how various innovative concepts have been implemented.BACKGROUNDThe Golden Giant Mine in the Hemlo area of North Western Ontario is owned by Hemlo Gold Mines Inc. 50.1% is controlled by Noranda. The mine commenced operations in March 1985 at a modest production rate. After it reaches full production by the end of 1988, with completion of underground development work, the mine is expected to operate at 3000 t/d and produce in excess of 300,000 ounces of gold per annum. This makes it one of the three largest producing gold mines in North America.Two other companies, Lac Minerals and Teck-Corona, operate mines on either side of the Golden Giant Mine. Noranda Geco Division is located 55 kilometers to the north at Manitouwadge. The majority of Hemlo Gold's 270 employees live in Manitouwadge where a mix of accommodation was constructed and made available for purchase by employees. Bus transportation is provided to and from the workplace with modern coaches. The housing and transportation policies were implemented prior to start-up and designed to help attract and maintain good employees.As shown in Figure 1, the operation is divided into five operating and support departments with each reflecting a high degree of departmental control and responsibility. For example, the mill department is responsible for all aspects directly relating to the milling complex including safety, operation, mechanical maintenance, assaying, instrumentation, and environmental control. Similarly, the mine department is responsible for all phases of operation, mine engineering, geology, and maintenance of underground mobile equipment. The plant department is responsible for maintenance of hoisting plants and conveyances, underground stationary equipment, all site electrical services, surface buildings, housing and yard maintenance. Efforts are made at every level of the organization, from departmental organization to individual job assignments, to ensure responsibilities are clear and that they encompass complete functions."

An evaluation of a nuisance-emissions-discriminating smart mine fire sensor system was made in an operating coal mine. These field evaluations were conducted to determine the sensor system's ability to discern nuisance emissions, such as diesel exhaust, emissions from flame cutting and welding operations or hydrogen gas from a charging station, from real fires and to compare the number of falsely reported fire alarms generated between the sensor system and a standard carbon monoxide (CO) monitor. The sensor system's ability to operate successfully in the working environment of an operating coal mine was also evaluated. The smart mine fire sensor system consisted of four sensors whose data outputs were fused with the use of a neural-network-type computer program. Long-term trials were conducted in a haulage way, a belt entry, and a track entry. The system functioned successfully in the belt entry, in accordance with its developmental goals, where the sensor system even discriminated events not anticipated during development. It was not totally effective in the haulage way and track entry, though, due to a combination of significant diurnal air temperature variations, dust, and mechanically induced vibrations. Also, deteriorating rib conditions contributed to operational problems in the haulage way evaluation. In general, the smart mine fire sensor provided nuisance emissions discrimination and was shown to be a viable new approach for mine atmospheric monitoring, enhancing miner safety. This paper describes the in-mine evaluation of the smart mine fire sensor system and discusses recommendations for improving the system.

The ever increasing energy costs associated with mining at depth has become an important issue that needs to be addressed for future sustainable production. Vale Inco Limited?s Creighton Mine being the deepest has the highest energy cost per ton due to the ventilation system requirements. A review of the ventilation systems was undertaken with respect to current practices and identification of opportunities to the practical application of technology that would facilitate energy savings. Energy conservation initiatives such as time of day controls have been implemented; however there still remained some opportunity for further reduction. Based on previous studies that identified opportunities due to actual time spent in the workplace, our mining method and ventilation design, it was determined that Ventilation on Demand (VOD) could provide further additional energy reductions with respect to our auxiliary fans. A pilot project has recently been initiated to apply a Ventilation on Demand concept to two 112 kW auxiliary fans and their related workings located on the 2340m level of Creighton Mine. The project objective is to determine the practical methodology and application of this technology in the field. This project involves the installation of variable frequency drive (VFD) starters on the auxiliary fans to allow variable volume (through speed control) based on demand. The required flow is determined based on equipment and/or personnel via identification tags. The Fans adjust to the flow requirements as measured by flow sensors. Since the fans are sized for the final requirements the required flows can be achieved regardless of system length. Energy savings are realized by supplying only the volumes (power) as required and only when required. This paper discusses the rational and program being tested at the VALE Inco Limited, Creighton Mine.

The Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR) was developed 10 years ago to fill the gap between geologic characterization and engineering design. It combines many years of geologic studies in underground coal mines with world-wide experience with rock mass classification systems. Like other classification systems, the CMRR begins with the premise that the structural competence of mine roof rock is determined mainly by the discontinuities that weaken the rock fabric. However, the CMRR is specifically designed for bedded coal measure rock. Since its introduction, the CMRR has been incorporated into many aspects of mine planning, including longwall pillar design, roof support selection, feasibility studies, extended-cut evaluation, and others. It has also become truly inter-national, with involvement in mine designs and funded research projects in South Africa, Canada, and Australia. This paper discusses the sources used in developing the CMRR, describes the CMRR data collection and calculation procedures, and briefly presents a number of practical mining applications in which the CMRR has played a prominent role.

"High demand for metals is driving the exploitation of lower grade and more complex orebodies. These projects are often the initiatives of junior mining companies with limited financial resources. In addition, existing operations seek to enhance revenue from their existing metal recovery operations, through the production of value-added by-product metals and chemicals. Typically, hydrometallurgical circuits, often with novel chemistry, are required to exploit these new ores, to produce the multiplicity of products that will make a marginal project economical, or to increase the product range of an existing operation. Often, the mineral processing engineer is given the task of coordinating the development of a back-end hydrometallurgical flowsheet for their mineral processing project. This paper discusses the objectives that companies have when they commission the operation of a hydrometallurgical pilot plant. The paper goes on to enumerate some of the principal differences between mineral processing and hydrometallurgical pilot plants and the effect these have on the design, operability and potential pilot plant outcomes. Important factors include working with chemically reactive solutions and pulps, elevated temperatures operation, changing rheological properties of slurries, the complexity of integrated circuit flowsheets with long hold-up times and multiple recycle streams, and the need in some cases for extreme attention to purity and cleanliness. Examples will be drawn from the extensive experience base of SGS Minerals Services at the Lakefield site, in piloting both mineral processing and hydrometallurgical process flowsheets.INTRODUCTIONWe are currently experiencing a period of strong growth in the demand for metals. This in turn is turning the spotlight on a great many smaller mining companies and mining promotion ventures trying to tap into the rising metal demand. Some of these companies want to develop their properties and recover metals while others want to develop to the point that a major company will take an interest, or in some cases buy them out completely.With the heightened interest in metals, many orebodies that have been known about for years are being reconsidered for exploitation. Often, the reason they have not been developed to date is because of difficult metallurgy and marginal grades leading to marginal economic viability. In both cases the key that unlocks the resources is often the application of a novel metallurgical flowsheet, often a hydrometallurgical flowsheet."

Transient states of the air parameters in mine workings occur as the effects of natural and technological disturbances, and in particular as a result of changes in ventilation conditions, caused by alteration of the mine workings geometry, state of fans performance or emission of gases. Particularly significant are those transient states caused by disturbances resulted from catastrophes, since they are frequently associated with violent phenomena that may be a danger for life and health of the staff working underground. The paper presents a number of examples of transient states of the air parameters in mine workings after a catastrophe, like the bump in the ZABRZE-BIELSZOWICE coal mine. Registration of air disturbances by the monitoring systems of ventilation in mine workings in the area of disaster both at the moment of a catastrophe occurrence and later during the rescue operation, enabled to track out the incident and identify the circumstances and reasons of those tragic events which caused death of 18 miners during last two years. Furthermore, computer simulations of processes occurring in mine ventilation network make effective research tools to be applied in practice, among others for the study of accidents and disasters.

Experimental and thermodynamic modelling studies on the structure of alkali borate melts and properties are discussed. A thermodynamic structure model for alkali borate melts is developed to describe the distribution of structural groups in the alkali borate melts as a function of composition. A qualitative interpretation for the boron anomaly in viscosity has been proposed, which regards the boron anomaly as a manifestation of the various antithetical effects caused by the introduction of alkali oxide into boric oxide. It has been found that the viscosity of alkali borate melts increases or decreases according to the changes in rigidity and spatial connectivity of the glass network structure, which is the function of temperature and composition. These concepts with some key examples are discussed in relation to their usefulness and practicality in industrial slags. "To properly evaluate bioleaching as a commercial alternative for sulphide concentrate oxidation, to enhance cyanidation response, it was necessary to define and optimize critical operating variables outside of the laboratory under less than ideal conditions. A complete bioleach testing laboratory was installed at Equity Silver Mines to aid in pilot plant flowsheet development.A continuous pilot scale bioleach circuit was constructed to provide data for meaningful valuation of biotechnology on a plant scale. The important operating and design parameters for pilot plant testing are described. Plant scale feasibility and design considerations, to treat a refractory pyrite/arsenopyrite concentrate produced from flotation tailing, are discussed. 1.0 BACKGROUNDEquity Silver Mines Limited is located 37 km southeast of Houston in central British Columbia. A 70% owned subsidiary of Placer Development Limited, Equity is Canada's largest open pit silver producer. Ore reserves were estimated at 28 million tonnes grading 106 g Ag/t, 0.96 g Au/t, and 0.38% Cu from two pits, the Southern Tail and the Main Zone. Detailed geology and mineralogy has been described previously(1,2).The concentrator flowsheet consists of conventional crushing, grinding, flotation, and dewatering circuits processing 5 300 tonnes per day of new mill feed. The resultant Cu/Ag/Au concentrate is trucked to Prince Rupert for shipment to market. Mill tailing reports to a closed circuit pond from which mill process water is recycled. Details of the concentrator process have been reported( 2,3).Production in the Southern Tail pit, from July 1980 to March 1984, resulted in mill tailing averaging 0.9 g Au/t and slightly more than 20 g Ag/t. Historic data indicate that unrecovered gold is associated with arsenopyrite and silver losses with unliberated tetrahedrite or minor silve,, bearing sulphosalts. Main Zone mill tailing, which commenced production in March 1984, contains approximately 0.5 g Au/t which is probably associated by majority with silver bearing minerals and pyrite while silver losses, 30-40 g Ag/t, are associated with unliberated silver and antimony bearing minerals."

"The operation of an activated charcoal system has five separate unit operations. Carbon Handling (carbon transportation, sizing, dewatering, etc.)Cost optimization starts with the basic operating parameters (design philosophy) set down at the time of engineering design. These parameters undergo almost immediate change due to site specific ore requirements, throughput changes, operator requirements or reagent availability.Activated charcoal is sometimes viewed as simple, uncomplicated reagent that requires not optimization. To some extent, this statement is true, but under most circumstances, if the time necessary to optimize the use of activated charcoal is available, the effort is rewarded with significant savings. CPL-Carbon Link has embarked upon a program of supplying technical support with its activated charcoal. Several operations in the United States have undertaken to have CPL-Carbon Link do an operational survey to determine if potential savings are possible. CPL-Carbon Link has offered to do these surveys for projects that are clients or simply would like to have CPL-Carbon Link review their operation. The information accumulated by CPLCarbon Link is being used to attempt to fashion industry standards so that a common reference point can be established for activated charcoal usage."

Stockyard operations are governed by the interaction between the different disciplines required to successfully schedule and control the supply chain of raw material through the stockyard in combination with the effectivity of the operation of the stockyard equipment. The system demonstrates a proven technology for implementing a centralised operation of full unmanned stockyard equipment, using a high precision absolute positioning system based on a Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receivers in combination with 3D rangefinders. The system implementation maps the surface profile of the stockyard inventory and allows in combination with proprietary algorithms for full operation of the stockyard machines without on-board operators. The operational impact of delayering the process by moving to a centralised operation is examined, together with the combined effect on the overall safety in the stockyard as a result of a change in reliance on operator skill dependencies. Average performance gains range from 10–20 per cent. The performance of the automation system is related to a consistency and reliability of uniform operation, which has an impact on the life expectancy and the effectiveness of the equipment. The effects of having instantaneous and correct information about the stockyard inventory volume measurement are investigated in relation towards spot price trading in current fast reacting markets.CITATION:Stefansen, R, 2017. In 1998 an initial objective was given to the author, to process valuable off grade High Carbon Ferro Manganese (FeMn) metal fines profitably. The previous attempts that had been made to re-melt these metal fines through the furnaces had resulted in poor furnace operation, mainly to do with lack of electrode penetration and furnace bed permeability. It was decided that the method to resolve these problems was to agglomerate the metal fines. During the study on the agglomeration of the metal fines, a decision was made to use furnace baghouse dust and stockpiled furnace baghouse dust and sludge (DSF) as a ?filler? in the metal fines. The primary reason for using baghouse dust was to eliminate an environmental hazard, whereas the secondary reason for using the DSF was to utilize manganese units contained in the dust. The off-grade metal fines and dust were compacted using a brick press, with cement and aluminum rich plastic clay as a binder, to obtain agglomerate that was cost effective. Through the re-melting of the agglomerated off-grade metal fines, it was realized that this agglomerate concept could have other uses, that of replacing ores on the furnace, at a lower cost. The agglomerate recipe was changed to create an agglomerate that had a high manganese to iron ratio, this replaced Comilog ore on the furnaces, thereby reducing overall furnace unit costs. Future work concerning agglomeration, is to reduce furnace costs further through agglomerating .0.5mm ultra ore fines and .0.3mm Gloria and Nchwaning sludge. Using this agglomerate replaces a portion of the Gloria and Nchwaning lumpy ore on the furnaces at a lower cost. This would eliminate problematic material that exists at the ASSMANG Manganese mines.

Ceremonies for the induction of five mining industry pioneers into the National Mining Hall of Fame will be on Sept. 12, 2009 at the Charles F. Barber Pavilion of the Museum Convention Center in Leadville, CO. The five inductees are: Paul A. Bailey, 82, Richard T. Moolick, 89, William Braden and Alonzo Pawling and Henry Harnischfeger. Paul A. Bailly was president of Bear Creek Mining Co., the U.S. exploration subsidiary of Kennecott Copper, from 1961 to 1967. In 1968, he joined Occidental Petroleum Corp. and was tasked with creating the company?s international mining division, Oxymin, which he led as president through 1983. During his distinguished career, Bailly participated in numerous significant mineral discoveries, developed a new exploration philosophy and made important additions to the mineral exploration literature. William Braden was the first to recognize the immense potential of the El Teniente orebody in Chile. He founded Braden Copper Co. and developed the El Teniente Mine which now, 100 years later, remains the world?s largest underground copper mine. Braden?s endeavor survives to-day as the El Teniente division of the Chilean state copper company, CODELCO. T. (Dick) Moolick established a lasting legacy in the mining industry, first during a 35 year career with Phelps Dodge Corp. and then as the driving force in establishing the National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum in Leadville. The Hall of Fame and Museum ? a monument to the memory of the men and women who pioneered the discovery and development of the United States? natural resources ? has become one of the fi nest museums in the western United States.

Ventilation planning in trackless metal mining is often taken for granted. This paper highlights the trials of planning and executing the ventilation design for Bog Zone at the Lisheen Mine. Ventilation planning for Bog Zone started at the feasibility study stage in 2003; subsequent design changes continued until 2006. In August 2006, the development of the Bog Zone ore body was accelerated through the use of contractors; in addition, the Lisheen equipment fleet was revised based on a larger load and haul fleet. As a result, the circuit was reviewed in terms of changes in design conditions and best practices. This review resulted in a 40% increase of total airflow required to mine Bog Zone. Resources utilized to design the circuit include: external review, computer modeling, and in-house Lisheen planning and operational staff review. The final ventilation design configuration was adopted in 2007, after modeling and evaluating 30 different scenarios, resulting in a better distribution of airflow, optimized secondary escape way, reduced contaminants, and a total power reduction. The value of investment in computer modeling of primary ventilation circuit and planning for staged implementation should never be underestimated.

The interest shown in our paper by Drs Schaekers and Dew, and their favourable comments, are appreciated. However, some of their remarks require a response. Stability testing procedures Regarding the issue of stability-testing procedures, we concur that no long-term procedure has been accepted by either environmentalists or the mining/processing industry as a valid method to test the long-term stability of solid wastes. We agree that the method we used is no exception, and we certainly did not claim that it should be recognized as such. What we did attempt to portray was that we had designed the test procedure in an attempt to simulate, at a very small scale, a tailings dam environment.

Equipment wear and corrosion have significant adverse impacts on the operating cost and efficiency of mineral processing plants. In this project advanced surface enhancement technologies are being investigated to decrease the wear and corrosion rate of metal surface. Enhanced metal surfaces are achieved through surface conversion, enrichment, and coating by use of advanced High-Density Infrared (HDI) and other technologies. Studies have been done to determine the effects of process parameters on surface properties and identify optimum conditions. The microstructure of the enhanced metal surfaces was characterized by SEM, EDS, and microindentation. Laboratory wear testing was carried out to investigate the wear performance and the viable coating candidate was determined.

Tracey Khanna, Assistant Editor of UK?s Mining Magazine discusses some of the new and important environmental challenges, physical and social, that are facing mining companies. The tide of public opinion has turned strongly against those companies which are unable to show that they are practising responsible environmental stewardship. This is, no doubt, in part due to the recent focus of the international media on environmental issues and constantly improving means of communications, which has brought the whole subject of mining and the environment to those who, in the past, had only a limited awareness of the industry. Mining companies today face new and important challenges with regard to the environment, both physical and social. New technology and a greater understanding of waste management techniques has helped to bring about improved handling and disposal of mines wastes, so reducing some of the impacts. However, improved technology has also brought about the economic viability of exploiting increasingly lower-grade ore from open pits, resulting in a greater visual impact.
