A review is presented of the furnace cooling system design and operating developments since the initial furnace start-up in January 2001 of the Chambishi DC-arc furnace to produce ferrocobalt alloy. The furnace operating conditions present a number of challenges to the furnace designers and operators, in particular, to provide a sustainable lining that can withstand the highly corrosive siliceous slag (roughly 50% SiO2). This is exacerbated by the dual requirement of operating this slag in a relatively highly superheated state (?T ?400°C when tapped at 1550°C) to ensure that the ferroalloy can be tapped (estimated 1370°C alloy liquidus temperature) prior to atomization. The core design challenge occurs at the alloy-slag interface, where a single refractory type cannot simultaneously meet the dual requirement of both adequate alloy and slag corrosion compatibility. Progression by the fourth furnace campaign to involve a retrofit of the bath sidewall to HATCH high-intensity, water-cooled, copper Waffle coolers and tap blocks is described. This involves operation of the entire slag bath, the slag-alloy interface and a portion of the alloy within a more chemically compatible refractory/slag (and possibly at times even an alloy) freeze-lining. Due to the high furnace power density employed (up to 500 kW/m2 hearth area), coupled with the large slag superheat needed, the resulting imposed peak bath sidewall heat fluxes are substantial, especially in the alloy (typically averaging 170 kW/m2), and on occasion have exceeded 1000 kW/m2. The performance of the HATCH Copper Waffle coolers under such aggressive process pyrometallurgical conditions is described. Aspects of the design and especially operating strategies to effect sustained production at up to 38 MW power input are also discussed.

Copper oxide ores deposits in the Katanga province of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) contain at variable level cobalt oxide minerals. In contrast to copper oxide minerals which readily dissolve in the sulphuric acid solution, the cobalt oxide bearings are difficult to dissolve, especially if cobalt is present in the third oxidation state (Co2O3). This species become soluble after reduction of Co+3in Co+2. In practice, the use of reducing agent is therefore necessary in order to transform the insoluble minerals into soluble cobalt sulphate species. The following reducing agents are currently used at the Shituru plant: ferrous ions, which are present in leach solutions, pulverised copper or sodium meta bisulphite (MBS). Due to the high consumption of reducing agents (0,8 t MBS/t of solubilized Co; 1,2 t Cu/t-Co), cobalt production is expensive. The use of sulphur dioxide as reducing agent was then investigated in order to reduce operating cost. This reagent also presents the advantage of sulphuric acid production during the leaching process. It has been added in the leaching vessel (tank). From the laboratory and industrial tests, selective leaching of cobalt (78%) has been performed. The cobalt leaching kinetic depend on sulphur dioxide dosage. Dissolution of copper, iron and manganese remained very low. No emanation of SO2 gas was observed during the process.

"Ore grades are decreasing and ore deposits are becoming more complex. In order to make a sound economical decision about a mining project, metallurgical testwork must be carried out. A few large “representative” samples cannot represent the metallurgy of a large ore body and a large number of samples reflecting variation in ore head grades and in mineralization types must be obtained for proper metallurgical studies, including flowsheet development for a greenfield project. A relationship can be established between the recovery of valuable minerals and ore grade for each mineralization type. This relationship can be used to establish a correlation between values recoverable and values contained in the ore body that can include multiple pay metals. With this information, a sound economical decision can be made about the viability of a large mining development project.INTRODUCTIONThe demand for minerals today is historically high as many countries are being rapidly industrialized. The supply for these minerals is not necessarily running short. However, it is widely accepted that the world today is running short of the easy to mine and easy to process ore deposits. As ore grade is decreasing and ore mineralogy is becoming more complex, metallurgical testing must be fully conducted in order to make a sound economical decision about a mining project. For a high-grade and high-quality deposit, it is hard not to make a good profit even with low metal prices. For a low-grade and hard to process deposit, the profit margin is much lower and is dependent on the throughput and the recovery of valuable minerals. The recovery of valuable minerals is a function of ore grade and mineralogy and it must be experimentally determined for a given processing option.At Vale Base Metals Technology Development, metallurgical testing for an existing operation or brownfield project is termed as Ore Evaluation, while metallurgical testing for a greenfield project is termed as Flowsheet Development (Xu, 2011). In the past, metallurgical testing involved a few large composite samples for lab and pilot plant testwork. As ore deposit becomes less homogeneous and more variable, a few large composite samples cannot represent the metallurgy of a large ore body. In addition, useful information about the deposit such as zones of “impurities” or floatable rock minerals would not be obtained. Different processing strategies could have been developed if the locations and sizes of these zones were known in advance. For proper metallurgical studies, a large number of samples reflecting variation in ore head grades and in ore mineralization types must be used. A relationship can be established between the recovery of valuable minerals and ore grade for each mineralization type. This relationship can be used to estimate values recoverable in the ore body that can include multiple pay metals. Ultimately, the recovery verses ore grade relationship will be used in business decision-making."

Procedures employing thiocyanate and dithiol complexes of molybdenum have been developed for the determination of the metal in the presence of large quantities of ferric iron. The procedures are developed for field application and it is possible to complete 200 analyses per day with laboratory accuracy. Use is made of sulphuric acid extraction and ascorbic acid reduction in the case of the thiocyanate procedure whilst the reducing system in the dithiol procedure is potassium iodide-sodium sulphite. Using a simple photometer the range of determination possible is 0-10~g for the thiocyanate procedure and 0-5 g for dithioI.INTRODUCTIONOf the many colorimetric procedures that have been developed for the determination of molybdenum only those using the thiocyanate or toluene-3, 4-dithiol complexes of the metal are sufficiently free from interference to be of use in geochemical prospecting. Rapid methods based on both these complexes 'have been developed at the. Broken Hill Division of The University of New South Wales as part of a general programme designed to improve geochemical procedures. Whilst speed rather than high accuracy is the important factor in prospecting, the aim of the programme is to develop procedures which will allow determination of 200· samples per man-day without loss of normal laboratory accuracy for the methods concerned.In most geochemical procedures visual estimation of a coloured complex is used in the determination of the quantity of metal present. At the high rate of sample determination of the improved methods this procedure places severe strain on the eyes. A series of gas inrush events occurred during development at Grosvenor mine resulting in exposure to elevated levels of methane at the production face. A total of 22 gas inrush events occurred releasing between 15 and 130 m3 of methane during each event. The presence of an undrained seam in the immediate floor, geotechnical characteristics of the floor, and the stress environment all contributed to these dynamic floor events, while the geological characteristics of the seam below, such as the seam thickness and ash content of 75%, prevented effective pre-drainage. However, events only occurred in headings mined parallel to the principal horizontal stress direction. In cut-throughs (C/Ts) perpendicular to the principal stress direction, no events occurred, and higher methane levels were observed at the production face.

Some of these lessons are: 1) Project leaders must have a leadership that fosters good communication and team work; and this leadership style must come from top management. 2) A good communication must exist between the personnel from Engineering, Construction, and Operation. "Mineral resources are typically informed by multiple data sources of varying reliability throughout a mining project life cycle. Abundant data which are imprecise or biased or both (‘secondary data’) are often excluded from mineral resource estimations (the ‘base case’) under an intuitive, but usually untested, assumption that this data may reduce the estimation precision, bias the estimate, or both.This paper demonstrates that the assumption is often wasteful and realized only if the secondary data are naively integrated into the estimation. A number of specialized geostatistical tools are available to extract maximum value from secondary information which are imprecise or biased or both; this paper evaluates cokriging (CK), multicollocated cokriging (MCCK), and ordinary kriging with variance of measurement error (OKVME).Where abundant imprecise but unbiased secondary data are available, integration using OKVME is recommended. This re-appropriates kriging weights from less precise to more precise data locations, improving the estimation precision compared to the base case and to Ordinary Kriging (OK) of a pooled data-set. If abundant secondary data are biased and imprecise, integration through CK is recommended as the biased data are zero-sum weighted. CK consequently provides an unbiased estimate with some improvement in estimation precision compared to the base case."

"At a current mining rate of 3,750 tons per day, La Mine Doyon is currently the largest gold mine in Canada. La Mine Doyon is an open pit gold mine located in the Abitibi area of Northwestern Quebec. The project is a joint venture between Soquem, a Quebec Crown Corporation in the resource development field and Lac Minerals Ltd., a publicly-held, resource development company. Lac Minerals is the managing company and operator of the project.Doyon went into production in 1980 on a very limited basis at 600 tons/day, and has seen a step wise increase to the current rate of 3,750 tons/day. Initially, all the ore was processed at Noranda Mines, Horne Division as flux for the copper smelter. The East Malartic Mill in Malartic was then upgraded and began processing Doyon ore. The third step in the progressive increase of throughput was the commissioning of the Doyon mill in November of 1982. Doyon ore is currently being processed at all three locations.During 1983, an exploration ramp was driven to explore the ore below the ultimate pit depth. Current plans indicate the sinking of a shaft and the commencement of underground mining during the next 2 or 3 years.Since its humble beginning, La Mine Doyon has always been a success; ore reserves have been extended to the east and the west and will soon be confirmed at depth, the mining and processing rates have been increased 6 fold, and the recovery has been increased from a designed recovery of 85% to over 95%. The intent of this paper is to trace the history and reasons for these rather dramatic improvements."

The influence of microwave treatment on copper flotation has been investigated. Comparative batch flotation tests carried out on ore treated at 5?12 kW for 0.1?0.5 s showed that improvements in copper recovery of between 6?15 % could be achieved compared with untreated ore. Both recovery and cumulative grade increased with increasing treatment time and power. A preliminary economic analysis showed that microwave treatment will be economically viable if recoveries similar to those determined on laboratory scale can be achieved on a plant. Two outstanding features of the world's young orogenic belts are their very consistently developed suites of volcanic rocks and, it is now recognized, the rather distinctive types of mineralization they contain. Further,it is now known that these volcanic suites exhibit evolutionary patterns, and it is beginning to appear that this evolution in style of igneous activity is accompanied by a parallel evolution in style of mineralization. Specifically,podiform chromite and stratiform pyritic copper ores of Alpine ultramafic/submarine tholeiite association progressively give way to more zincian stratiform ores associated with andesites and dacites, "porphyry copper"deposits developed in quartz dioritic to dacitic plugs, and lead-zinc stratiform ores related to increasingly pyroclastic, rbyodacitic volcanism.This "coupling" is exhibited well in the volcanic arcs - the young orogenic zones-of the SW Pacific which, with tbeir abundance of youthful and commonly unmetamorphosed materials provide an opportunity for investigating, through a petrochemical approach, the possible significance of ores in the elucidation of mechanisms of lava formation. It is suggested as a working hypothesis that in the orogenic (voleanic arc) regime ores are associated with the cale-alkaline rocks because these cale-alkaline rocks are in part generated by exhalative loss, and the ores are among the manifestations of tbat loss.

Exactly 25 years ago this month (August 12, 1981), IBM introduced the ?Personnel Computer? with a 16 bit operating system called MS-DOS 1.0. Since then, Moore?s Law, which essentially states that computer capability will doubled every 18 months, has been fully evident in the computer industry. As computers have advanced from main frames to initial personnel computers to the powerful graphical workstations of today, numerical modeling for ground control in mining has followed closely behind. Twenty five years ago, many numerical methods for solving ground control problems were little more than equations on a piece of paper. In the intervening years, these numerical models have grown from initial trial programs to highly-complex computational systems with numerous capabilities for different material behavior, failure criteria, gridding methods, discontinuities, etc. In some instances, the capability of the programs has quickly outstripped the geo-technical modeler?s ability to get accurate, realistic input and boundary conditions. This paper will look at: how numerical models have evolved in the last 25 years, how the models have been applied to ground control problems in that time period, and where numerical modeling is headed in the immediate future.

Newmont Mining’s Ahafo Mine is located in Ghana approximately 300 km (190 miles) northwest of the capital city of Accra in the Brong-Ahafo region. The nearest city is Sunyani, located 45 km (28 miles) to the north. The Ahafo Mine will process ore from seven major pits that extend along a 40-km (25-mile) strike. Four pits are in the south and three pits are in the north. The resource is currently stated at 373 t (12 million oz). But it still has the potential for growth both from new discoveries and the development of underground operations.

The data developed in this study establishes the technical and economic feasibility as well as the improved health and safety characteristics of a novel mining concept. The mining concept is a modified longwall technique using prestressed tendons for roof control, longhole blasting for fragmentation, and remote mucking. The technical feasibility was found to be dependent on the state of the art, while economic feasibility was found to be dependent on particular minerals and on supply and demand. Since these two conditions are not necessarily coincident in time the data is presented in the report in a manner that enables the mining engineer to perform a rapid preliminary technical and economic analyses for a specific property.

The kinetics of copper cementation during atmosphere leaching of a Ni-Cu matte in CuSO4-H2SO4 solution was studied as a function of initial copper ion concentration, initial acid concentration, temperature, stirring rate, particle size distribution and pulp density. It was found that all these process variables influenced the rate of cementation. A two-stage rate of reaction was observed inmost of the experiments, with the rate of cementation in the initial stage being slower than that of the subsequent second stage. The increased rate of cementation in the second stage was attributed to the enhancing effect of the surface deposit. The cementation process was found to take place by two different rate-controlling mechanisms. At a temperature range of 50?70°C, an activation energy of 74.6 kJ/mol was obtained, indicating a surface reaction controlled process. At higher temperatures (70?80°C) a lower value of activation energy was observed (18.2 kJ/mol), indicative of a process controlled by diffusion through surface layers. The structural characteristics of the cemented deposit could not be determined in the investigated system where the deposit was mixed with the leach solid residue.

Construction of the drilled shafts for the Brightman Street Bridge Replacement Project were not only challenging due to working over the water but were also challenged by changed soil conditions, concurrent work being performed by an adjacent contractor on the same project, environmental restrictions and severe winter conditions. A total of 36 x 8 feet diameter drilled shafts with 7.5 feet rock sockets were installed for the East and West bascule piers. This project also included Osterberg Cell load testing on two production drilled shafts at each the East and West bascule piers. The results from the load test program were used to fine tune the design of the drilled shaft rock sockets. From a constructability standpoint the reverse circulation drilling method with a pile top drill rig proved to be an excellent choice for drilling the overburden and rock sockets of the large diameter deep drilled shafts.

The Palabora Mining Company has successfully extended the life of its operation by developing a 30 000 tpd block cave underground mine below the now closed open pit. The process of transitioning from surface to underground mining has been technically, operationally and managerially challenging. This has been due to a number of factors, in particular, the development of a block cave in a very competent rock mass. The competence of the rock mass is clearly demonstrated in the open pit that preceded the block cave, one of the steepest deep open pit excavations in the world. With cave breakthrough, however, the pit was ?instantaneously? deepened by 400 m causing a major failure of the north-west wall involving close to 100 Mt of waste material.

The piled raft foundation was extensive applied in the last two decades in different soil conditions e.g. in soft to stiff clay as well as in medium to dense sand and even in highly weathered rock. The piled raft is now applied not only to control the foundation settlement but also to minimize the required raft thickness to reach the most economic foundation design. An innovative application of the piled raft is its special adjustment to cases of foundations with large load eccentricities or very different loaded parts of buildings to avoid the need of settlement joints, which are especially complex below ground water table. Recently, the piled raft is applied for foundations of highway and railway bridges with special serviceability requirements regarding the allowable total and differential settlement as well as tilting. Actually numerical analyses are the mostly used design methods for piled rafts. For all day design practice a simple and modest design method is highly needed -at least in the first design stage- to check the feasibility of the piled raft on the specific project conditions. In this paper, a general overview on the recent innovative applications of piled rafts in Germany will be presented in a short overview. The results of the simple design method will be discussed and compared with the results of more enhanced numerical methods.

The Butte quartz monzonite is the host rock for early porphyry copper style mineralization and subsequent mesothermal-epithermal, enargite-gold style veining that transects the district. The east-west Anaconda system veins sustained mining for over a century. They include the Emma, Anaconda-Original, Syndicate, Badger-State and Alice-Rainbow veins, each with strike lengths of more than 3,660-m (12,000-ft) and vertical continuity in excess of 1,370-m (4,500-ft) with mining widths from 1.5- to 15-m (5- to 50-ft). These characteristics are unique to Butte. The incredible dimensions and tenor of these veins have yet to be surpassed and Butte is still touted as being the “Richest Hill on Earth.” The Anaconda Company was formed in 1895 to develop underground copper reserves in the district. It eventually consolidated all operations under one company. Production from underground mining continued through the mid-1970s. Openpit mining in the Berkeley pit began in 1955 with the extraction of supergene ores, along with the remnants of deeper horsetail zones inaccessible to the underground mines.

The International Ground Control Conference in Mining has always provided an open forum for the publication, presentation, discussion, and often heated debate on roof bolting systems mostly with attention to how, when, and why they work. During the last 24 Conferences at least 170 papers have been presented by International Experts on these ?simple? devices that range in length from 30-inches to 20 ft and from 5/8 to 2 inches in diameter. Roof bolts are primarily mechanically anchored, glued, cemented, or driven. Bolts are placed vertically, angled, or tied together with special fixtures (trusses and slings). They have been termed active, passive, stick-slip, and several other descriptive acronyms or mining slang expressions. This retrospective paper will present the changes in bolt types and usage, point out some of the biggest myths and hail the most significant advances (according to the authors? opinions of course).
