The Greymouth Coalfield contains New Zealand's greatest known resource of bituminous rank coal. The coals are of very high quality, with low ash and sulphur contents and a range of other properties that makes them desirable for a wide range of uses. In fact only a few producers around the world today can offer coals with such exceptional properties. This suggests that Greymouth coal has potential as a premium export trading commodity. These assertions have been largely confirmed by a comprehensive exploration drilling programme funded by Mines Division û Ministry of Energy between 1979 and 1984. The program, forming part of the NZ Coal Resources Survey, was carried out under contract by Lime and Marble Ltd. The drilling of 49 deep, predominantly cored, holes at 1000 m intervals over the coalfield has generated a vast amount of data. It has shown the existence of three major potentially minable coal deposits containing 233 x 106, 33 x 106 and 15 x 106 tonnes of coal in ground. Investigations have at this stage only identified targets and these estimates represent 'in ground' resources, not recoverable reserves. Recent geological studies as well as past and present mining have clearly highlighted the problems posed by the complexity of the coalfield geology. The coalfield lies within a mobile zone in the earth's crust known as the Paporoa Tectonic Zone, which has been active from at least mid-Cretaceous to the present time. Currently this factor poses the greatest obstacle to the determination of mining possibility of the, defined deposit and ultimately will strongly influence any future mining development. The Greymouth Coalfield has, however, had a long and eventful mining history spanning the last 120 years, where 32.5 x 106 tonnes of coal has been won from over 100 mines. In spite of the problems facing development, the large quantities and exceptional quality of the remaining coal will act as a strong inducement to persevere with this difficult but potentially valuable resource.

"SynopsisOver the last decade in South Africa, there has been a significant increase in the number of mining operations, both open pit and underground, which use independent contractors to carry out mining activities. Often mine owners will choose the contractor option without fully understanding the consequences of undertaking this option. Traditionally, contract mining has come at a cost premium of about 15% to 20% compared to an owner mining scenario. However, due to the large number of junior mining companies entering the mining arena in South Africa contract mining rates have increased, with cost premiums as high as 50% being reported. This paper looks at the merits of owner mining versus contract mining and describes under what conditions it may be favourable to select the one option over the other. A simulated rockburst was conducted underground at Kopanang Mine, previously called Vaal Reefs No. 9 Shaft. The rockburst was simulated by means of a large blast detonated in solid rock close to a crosscut sidewall. The simulated rockburst involved the design of the seismic source, seismic observations in the near and far field, high-speed video filming, a study of rock mass conditions such as fractures, joints, rock strength etc. Knowledge of the site conditions before and after the simulated rockburst was also gained. Some of the important findings are listed below: ?Two areas of damage were identified on the blasting wall: (i) an area of high-intensity damage in which ground velocities of 3.3 m/s were recorded by an accelerometer, which was subsequently ejected in a block of rock, (ii) an area of low-intensity damage where ground velocities of 1.6 m/s were recorded by an accelerometer which remained on the tunnel wall. ?High-speed filming revealed rock fragments being ejected from the wall at velocities in the range of 0.6 m/s to 2.5 m/s. The measurements were taken in the area of low-intensity damage. As planned, no gas pressure was directly involved in damaging the wall of the tunnel. ?The attenuation of peak particle velocities for the main blast in the near field (6 m to 30 m), as a function of distance R, was found to be proportional to R-1.7. ?The simulated rockburst was recorded as a local magnitude ML= 1.3 by the Klerksdorp regional seismic network. ?Peak particle velocities from nearby blasting, recorded on the tunnel wall after the simulated rockburst, were about six times greater then peak particle velocities recorded from the same source area before the simulated rockburst.

The Hoek-Brown failure criterion is often applied to a wider range of rocks than the isotropic rock masses to which it is strictly applicable. This paper evaluates the patterns of defects in rock masses using spherical projection contour plots of samples of randomly-generated orientations and datasets from mapping of New Zealand closely-jointed greywacke rock masses. Two indices from the contour plots - the area within the 1% contour (A1%) and maximum concentration (Cmax) are introduced for distinguishing uniform (isotropic), random or regular defect patterns. The indices provide a potential extension to current guidelines on the use of the Hoek-Brown failure criterion. The paper also outlines kinematic checks to assess the influence of defect clusters on rock mass strength. Historically, the processing function has been regarded as efficiently managed as long as production costs were kept low, recovery was adequate and sufficient plant capacity was avail-able. In this paradigm, processing is viewed as capable of making only a limited contribution to a company?s competitive advantage. However, the processing function can provide a primary vehicle for building critical competitive capabilities. Processing organizations should be encouraged to become so accomplished they generate new opportunities for other functional groups and thereby influence a company?s overall strategy. This requires a deep shift in processing?s role, in its self-image and in the expectations of it held by managers in other functions. Specific plant improvement techniques ? total productive maintenance (TPM), loss control, etc. ? should be viewed primarily as means for building strategically valuable processing capabilities. Different improvement strategies create different kinds of capabilities and present new strategic options. Broadly speaking, a mineral-producing company seeks competitive advantage through two principal activities: the development of new mineral production and reserves and the optimization of existing operations. These lead to increases in ore reserves, production levels and cash flows that are manifested in increased profitability and, hopefully, increases in the price of the firm?s stock. The profitability of a minerals company is a function of the overall profitability of the industry sector in which the company participates and the firm?s competitive position within that sector relative to those of its competitors. Competitive advantage within the industry comes from two sources: the ability to maintain lower prices than competitors for the same product (cost leadership), or from the sale of products with unique properties that justify higher prices (product differentiation; Porter, 1980). Most mineral companies produce fungible commodities that are sold to anonymous customers, and sustainable cost advantage is the only long-run strategy available to these companies to enhance profitability.

U.S. Borax’s mine in California’s Mojave Desert is the source of nearly half the world’s supply of refined borates. These minerals are used in hundreds of products, including essential plant nutrients that increase crop yield and quality, and safe building products that protect homes from insects and the elements. Borax’s workforce is also safe. In fact, it is among the safest in the nation. In 2003, the company was recognized by the U.S. Mine, Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) for achieving the best safety record among large U.S. mining operations. It was also recognized by its parent company, Rio Tinto, for achieving the best record among its nearly 80 worldwide mining operations. Borax’s safety performance is five times better than the national average. And its workforce recently achieved more than two million hours without a lost-time injury.

Due to improved, stringent safety regulations, many modern road tunnels are statistically safer, per kilometer, than above ground roadways. However, the public perception and reaction in the event of a serious tunnel fire is very different to that associated with a surface incident. Vehicle fires in road and rail tunnels are recognized to represent an immediate and extreme danger to the patrons of those systems. Unlike workers in the mining and civil construction industries, the general public are neither trained nor equipped to fight fires or evacuate under deteriorating smoke conditions. Accordingly, for the majority of modern transportation tunnels the ventilation infrastructure is sized on the requirement to control the combustion products from worst-case fire scenarios and to provide a tenable evacuation route for the tunnel users. It is common for these same emergency ventilation systems to be employed, often in a reduced capacity, for other operating modes such as the dilution of pollutants during congested traffic conditions. This is one of the fundamental differences to mine ventilation, where primary ventilation systems are not typically sized based on fire scenarios. This paper presents an overview of the subject of fires in vehicular tunnels. This includes a brief history of major transportation tunnel fires followed by a discussion on the resulting legislation and standards that govern the design and operation of tunnel emergency ventilation systems. A summary is provided on the common criteria, theory, and design techniques that are employed during tunnel emergency ventilation systems design. Information is provided on fire detection and suppression, with a discussion on the growing acceptance of wet suppression as a means to mitigate major fires in road tunnels worldwide.

What do all iron ore mines have in common? Perfect production days! Yes, those harmonious 24-hour periods when the stars align and the daily output number rockets past the long-term average to hit new heights. While perfect days are always welcome, the focusing question iswas that just a ‘flash in the pan’ (due to a special cause) or an indication of the process’s capability (with clues to the common causes) which, if addressed, could make every day perfect? In the context of today’s operating environment, with the need to maximise productivity at minimum cost, it’s an important question.Investigations reveal that the throughput difference between a perfect production day and the average is often in the order of 40 per cent, and that bulk solids handling (BSH) system deficiencies are the largest (>50 per cent) class of lost opportunity. Root causes for underperformance of elements in BSH systems can often be traced back to the detailed design and even study-stage oversights. Essentially baked into the fabricated plant, operations are effectively forced to accept them at the point of practical completion and then deal with the consequences for the life of the mine. Subsequent normalisation of these defects in the planning process reduces visibility and hence the impetus for long-term solutions in favour of lower targets and quick fixes to keep the show on the road. On an industry wide basis the design processes and assumptions responsible for BSH system underperformance become enshrined as common practice and hence repeated across sites and organisations.In addition to making the case for action, practical steps that can be taken to help realise the significant productivity prize and avoid the problems in first place are provided.CITATION:Wellwood, G A, 2017. This is one of a series of reports describing investigations made within the Missouri River Basin in Montana by mining engineers of the Bureau of Mines, Minerals Division, Region II. The primary purpose of these investigations is to provide basic information to agencies of the Department of the Interior and other agencies concerned with the planning of power and other water developments in the Missouri River Basin. This report contains only such factual data as have been authorized for public distribution. Special precautions have been taken not to reveal any information or data considered to be confidential. The field investigations for this report were made during the fall of 1948 and the summer of 1949. Virtually all of the known metallic mineral deposits and some nonmetallic (industrial) mineral deposits within Judith Basin County were investigated. Most of the mines and prospects have been inactive for many years; most of the old underground mine workings now are inaccessible or only partly accessible. Consequently, much of the information on many of the mines and prospects necessarily has been obtained from available U. S. Government and State publications and from owners and local residents.

"Over recent years a number of techniques have been developed as part of the AMIRA1 P9 project to represent mathematically or measure directly sub-processes occurring in flotation cells. These include the determination of:•,?a machine parameter (bubble surface area flux, Sb);•,?a froth parameter (froth recovery, Rf );•,?entrainment and drainage parameters (???and d); and•,?an ore floatability parameter (Pi).These flotation parameters allow the plant engineer to develop a model of the flotation circuit that can be used as a powerful tool to diagnose the performance of that circuit. The recently developed JKSimFloat V6 flotation simulator uses these parameters to predict the flotation circuit performance that would arise from changes in operating conditions and circuit configuration.This new flotation technology was applied to the Placer Kanowna Belle Gold Mine in Western Australia. A series of plant surveys, cell characterisation measurements and laboratory batch tests were conducted to determine the flotation circuit model parameters to be used within the JKSimFloat V6 simulatorA thorough flotation circuit analysis was then performed at Kanowna Belle using JKSimFloat V6. The recommendations that were provided by this circuit analysis have resulted in large improvements in the flotation performance at Kanowna Belle. These include a 1.3% increase in flotation gold recovery and a substantial decrease in operating costs. The analysis is still ongoing, however, the benefits already obtained from applying this technology have resulted in a US$1.3 million a year improvement to the mine."

In October 2006, a 7m Double Shield TBM, boring through very poor volcanic formations, was pushed back by fluid mud, which presence had not been detected during previous field investigations, due to the high covers characterizing the majority of the tunnel axis. The present work describes the investigations made to gain better knowledge of the conditions in front and all around the TBM, the special measures implemented, the exploratory and bypass tunnels excavated, the extraordinary occurrences came true during the execution of these tunnels, the drainage campaigns, the design of the chamber excavated to free the TBM, the dismounting and restarting of the TBM.

"The environmental impact of the Rabbit Lake project is presented. Baseline data for fish, water, air and radon collected in 1973, 1975, 1980and 1986, are compared with post-development environmental monitoring data. Predicted environmental impacts for the developed Rabbit Lake and B-zone deposits are compared to the actual impacts. INTRODUCTIONThe environmental impact of the Rabbit Lake project has been documented through the years in several submissions to the government agencies. In 1972, the environmental baseline study for the Rabbit Lake area was completed prior to any mining activity at the Rabbit Lake pit (Fig. 1).Sampling concentrated on Hidden Bay and Pow Bay, which received the treated effluent and the waters drained from Rabbit Lake respectively.A second baseline study was done on the Collins Bay area in 1980(Fig. I) in preparation for the mining of the B-zone pit. The detail in this study was considerably greater than the detail in the previous study. Collins Bay and Harrison Peninsula were the areas sampled. The B-zone deposit is being mined at present.With the discovery of the A-zone, D-zone and Eagle Point deposits, it was decided in 1986 to begin proceedings to obtain approval from Saskatchewan's Department of the Environment, and from the Atomic Energy Control Board to develop these deposits.In preparation, a third baseline study of both the Rabbit Lake and Collins Bay areas was done in 1986 and 1987. The emphasis was to establish the baseline at the three new deposits, to quantify the actual impacts of the existing Rabbit Lake operations and to confirm the Collins Bay B-zone (1980) impact predictions. The new deposits will allow us to continue to produce uranium into the future. In January 1988, Saskatchewan approval was received.Since 1975 in the Rabbit Lake area and 1980 in the Collins Bay area, routine environmental monitoring has been done. This has resulted in one of the largest and most comprehensive environmental data bases in North America in mining. By the time the Eagle Point deposit is mined to completion, there will have been data collected for approximately 40 years.Further discussions follow which describe the impacts of the past (1972 to 1984), the present (1985 to 1987) and the future. In addition, the past and present performances and the future plans of the .waste management systems will be discussed."

The point of the anode effect on carbon anodes of dcfincd surface area. during electrolytic decomposition of alumina dissolved in molten fluorides. has been determined from current-voltage curves. The reproducibility and accuracy was found to be better for cell voltage than anode current density. Results have been obtained for the effect of alumina concentration temperature and carbon type. The point of the anode effect was strongly dependent on both the alumina concentration and the carbon type. For high alumina concentrations it has been found that the anode effect approaches reversibility. From these results it is concluded that co-evolution of CO, and CF. occurs prior to the onset of the anode effect. The anode effect results when the CF, content becomes sufficiently high for the melt not to wet the electrode surface and is maintained because of the slow desorption of CF, and the high electrode potential that results.

During the past several years — much to the delight of producing firms and countries — copper prices have surged from under $1 to more than $3/lb. Anyone familiar with the industry also knows that since the early 1970s the long-run trend in real copper prices has been significantly downward. This sharp contrast between short-run and long-run trends raises the issue of the forces behind these developments. What has been driving short-run prices up and long-run prices down? Simple economics suggests that it is all a matter of supply and demand. When demand is rising faster than supply, prices will rise and vice versa.

"The lack of integration of mining and metallurgical information at sufficient detail to act is a problem. Without such data, mine cut-off grade can not be optimized on a per grade basis. It is difficult to determine economics without integration of mine transactions, stockpile inventories, process flows and assays. Actions also require real time information from manufacturing assets, but corrected for gross errors from trucks, shovels, conveyors, faulty sensors, bad instrument calibration. Validation methods must include process models to identify corrupt actionable information. This paper presents new tools that use the model the process to sift through available data, identify and eliminate gross errors, and use statistical data reconciliation to create material balanced, internally consistent values. Uses of models allow data to be unified for useby both monitoring and decision making processes.A Real Time Performance Management (RtPM) uses unifying analysis methods to empower everyone in the organization with unparallel real-time intelligence, enabling them to continuously improve performance.BACKGROUNDExtraction of metals has become a global business; new economic and environmental forcing factors are present today which were unheard a couple of years ago that are causing companies to focus on plant operations. High ROI actions can be achieved internally which will increase mining and metallurgical processing unit efficiency and reducing operating costs if the proper information is provided those in the complex that can act. Large changes are possible with many of these small steps if the barriers for action are removed. The chief impediments are lack of infrastructure including the data, computing tools and essential data and bad information.Increased demands will be placed on the types, quantity and priority of information. Metallurgical complexes are attempting to become better neighbors, increase productivity, improve customer service, and satisfy the regulators and compliance groups -- all with fewer people and less costs."

"In the past year, two very innovative gold ore processing plants have been designed, built and commissioned by Gekko Systems Pty Ltd. The first plant in Vietnam utilizes conventional crushing and ball milling followed by gravity concentration (Inline Pressure Jig (IPJ) and Falcon concentrator), flotation, intensive leaching (GFIL), the first industrial scale use of AuRIX®1001 ion exchange resin and a cyanide destruction circuit. The second plant, in Australia, uses a 3 stage crushing circuit to crush the gold ore to minus 1mm, followed by gravity concentration utilising a rougher, scavenger, cleaner circuit of IPJ’s and a Falcon concentrator. A direct smeltable gold concentrate is produced as well as a lower grade concentrate for future intensive leaching or sale. Both plants were designed and built within very tight time frames and budgetary constraints. The experience gained during the plants’ design, commissioning and operation are discussed.INTRODUCTIONGekko Systems (Gekko) is a leader in the development of innovative technology for gravity recovery and intensive cyanidation. It provides low cost and metallurgically optimal solutions for its customers. It has also led the trend away from whole ore cyanidation (CIP/CIL) towards gravity/intensive cyanidation (GIL) and gravity/flotation/intensive cyanidation (GFIL) plants. These types of plants offer low capital costs, low environmental impact and maximum return to investors (Rob J Longley et al, 2002). Key to this type of flowsheet is the application of a continuous concentrate unit, such as the InLine Pressure Jig (IPJ), which is designed to produce high gold gravity recoveries at a coarse grind (Sandy Gray, 2003). When combined with other gravity devices, and/or flotation, and intensive cyanidation, using the Gekko InLine Leach Reactor (ILR), very high overall recoveries can be achieved.In 2004, Gekko launched a new range of products called Gekko Modular Systems. The idea was to provide off the shelf, complete solutions for the separation and recovery of complex and free gold as well as the pre-concentration of diamonds. A series of modules were designed that incorporated Gekko manufactured as well as outsourced equipment. Gekko now offers modules ranging from feeding and conveying to crushing, gravity recovery, flotation, intensive cyanidation, refining and detox (see Figure 1)."

The formation in Newmont Mining?s Phoenix Mine near Battle Mountain, NV contains high levels of abrasive quartzite as well as gold, copper and silver. Newmont started mining operations at Phoenix (formerly Battle Mountain Gold) three years ago and the planners knew they were working with a challenging geological formation. But as it turned out, it was more challenging than anticipated. Mine manager Mark Evatz said, ?Anything that touches Phoenix rock wears fast. The rock fights back here.? To contend with the hard conditions, Newmont uses Atlas Copco?s Pit Viper 271 (PV-271) blasthole drill. Because of the hardness of the rock, drilling at Phoenix requires hammer drilling and the mine uses Atlas Copco TD65 hammers with 171 mm (6.75 in.) bits. The mine?s PV-271?s are outfitted with a single 41 m3/min (1450 cfm), 2.4 MPa (350 psi), oil-flooded air compressor. Phoenix has six Atlas Copco PV-271 drill rigs plus an Atlas Copco DML and a DM45 midrange blasthole rig. The mine?s goal is to keep 3.6 Mt (4 million st) of muck in inventory to stay ahead of the shovels and support needed operational flexibility (ore control related). Drilling efficiency has been a continuous point of improvement since operations began at the mine. The single-pass depth capability of 16.5 m (55 ft) on the PV-271 helped with that. Originally, the plans called for 6-m (20-ft) bench heights, supported by 7-m (23-ft) drill depths, and time spent moving from hole to hole was eating up productivity. Drilling on that plan resulted in drilling an average of 14 m/h (47 ft/hour). When depths were changed to 13-m (44-ft) drill depth, supporting blasting of 12-m (40-ft) benches, they were able to use the single pass capacity of the PV-271. Performance increased to more than 18 m/h (60-ft/hour) an hour. Although the drill depth change largely supported the improvement, other aspects of continuous improvement associated with improved knowledge of the Pit Viper drills helped as well.
