Uranium is back on the radar. Uranium has always been a controversial metal, from its role in the arms race to its claim to be the only viable alternative to fossil fuel. This paper will cover its properties and use, its occurrence and production in South Africa, the current market drivers and its future role as a primary energy fuel. It will highlight the difference between uranium used to make a bomb and uranium used in a power station. The recent significant uranium price rise will be put into context of the market drivers including geopolitical issues. Planned expansions in nuclear power station capacity will be reviewed, as will new mine production. Future demand will also be speculated on.

This paper describes a mobile laboratory developed specifically for nickel prospecting, and which was designed to be operated by sub-professional staff in remote areas independently of established laboratories. An atomic absorption spectrophotometric procedure was used to determine nickel, cobalt, lead, zinc, and copper ID latentIc and sulphIde samples, with a detection limit better than 25 µg/g for all elements. The procedure was applicable to both soil and drill samples and the accuracy of the procedure, which was ±5 per cent relative at the 1,000 µg/g level was sufficient for the preliminary assessment of mineralized samples and the control of drilling operations. The analytical procedure and the means taken to ensure the necessary reproductibility and accuracy are described. One operator can carry out 400 elemental determinations per 8-hr day at an approximate cdst of 6 cents per elemental determination. The results are returned within a single day, a factor which can contribute materially to the efficiency of drilling operations.

A joint effort by the Pittsburgh Research Center (PRC) and the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA)3was undertaken to determine how well self-contained self-rescuers (SCSR's), deployed in accordance with Federal regulations (30 CFR 75.1714), held up in the underground environment with regard to both physical damage and aging. This report presents findings regarding laboratory-tested SCSR's in the fifth phase of testing from mid-1993to early 1996. The SCSR's were tested on human subjects and on a breathing and metabolic simulator (BMS) at PRC. These results indicate that most of the apparatus, if they pass their inspection criteria, perform satisfactorily.

The possible closure and subsequent flooding of South Deep Gold Mine?s neighbouring Randfontein Estates Limited No. 4 Shaft (REL 4) necessitated the construction of five concrete plugs in the connecting tunnels to prevent the ingress of groundwater into REL4 from flooding South Deep mine. Several technical investigations had been carried out before and during construction of the plugs in order to reduce the probability of groundwater flow through the boundary pillar between the two mines or through the rock mass immediately around the plugs. This paper describes the geological, hydrogeological and stability investigations carried out to evaluate the structural competence of the boundary pillar.

"Steel media wear is a major cost component in mineral processing. In the case of existing operating mill, steel media wear prediction can be used to help compare the performance of steel media from different suppliers before completing marked ball tests. It can also be used to investigate how ores from different site of a given mine affect steel media wear. In the case of Greenfield cases, steel media wear prediction can be used to estimate the cost of steel media for a given feasibility study.This paper presents a wear testing and prediction methodology that ties together abrasion wear and corrosion wear testing results through the use of a simplified discrete element charge motion model. The experimentation dimension to this methodology takes samples for steel media, mine site ore and water to determine abrasive and corrosive wear parameters of a given media, ore, water set.The test methodology development is illustrated along with a comparison of wear predictions with observed wear rates in some operating mills. A case study is included that illustrates how this methodology was used to estimate steel media wear performance. The paper closes with a discussion on the use of parts of the experimental methodology to investigate other abrasive wear conditions such as liner wear, paste backfill piping and ore breakage as well as avenues for future test development.INTRODUCTIONThe cost of comminution processes represents a significant part of the overall costs of a mining operation. Grinding media/liner wear alone accounts for 15-25% of the total operating cost. The annual steel grinding media consumption is approximately 2.5 mtpa or 0.3% of total world steel production [Smorgon Steel Group, 2005]. Using an estimated grinding media cost of about US$0.75/kg [Halbe and Smolik, 2002], gives a media cost of over US$1.875 billion per annum. Mining continues to shift towards exploitation of lower grade ores as the higher grades get depleted. These low-grade ores require finer grinding for the liberation of the value minerals, and hence it can be assumed that grinding media consumption will also continue to rise.The Bond abrasion test, dating back to 1963, [Weiss, 1985] is still used to estimate the total mill media wear. The benefits of using a centrifugal field to concentrate both coarse and fine gold are well documented but the placement of these machines within grinding circuits is still evolving. Conventional wisdom dictates that the best location for enhanced gravity machines is cyclone underflow on account of the elevated grade found in this stream when compared to cyclone feed or overflow. Plant operating experience at both large and small scale indicates that there are compelling arguments to place ENHANCED GRAVITY MACHINES on cyclone feed instead. Multiple regression analysis was used to predict elemental concentrations of copper and nickel in soils from consideration of the concentration of these elements in vegetation in an ultrabasic complex in New Zealand. Regression equations were computed from sixteen independent variables involving concentrations of ten elements in plant ash, and various physical factors such as slope and altitude of the site, and height of the tree. One elemental and one physical variable were significant for nickel at the 90 per cent level of probability and five elemental and two physical variables were significant for copper at the same level. Use of the regression equations explained 32·5 per cent and 26·5 per cent of the variance in the respective relative accumulations (amount in plant divided by amount in soil) of copper and nickel.Predicted concentrations of copper and nickel in soils agreed more closely with the observed values in the soils than did the levels of these elements in plant ash.Although the results may specifically apply only to the test area, the principles should have universal application.

Controlled drilling and blasting continue to be an important method of block production and for block splitting. Drill and blast technique has disadvantage that sometimes, it produces cracks in uncontrolled manner and also produces micro cracks in the block as well as in remaining rock, if not carefully carried out. Recovery by this method is low compared to other methods. Therefore, attempts have continued to develop controlled growth of crack in desired direction. In this paper a series of tests are described using detonating fuse in marble. Economics of different methods is also compared. In comparison to conventional use when holes are lined with inexpensive cardboard or plastic liners with a slit, the cost and damage is the least and development of crack is in desired direction.

"Over the past decade or so, our efforts have focused on developing the rationale and concepts for new technology in reagent development and optimization in the processing of base and precious metals. A major outcome of these efforts have been the development of a novel family of collectors, principally driven by the MAXGOLD® and Aero XD-5002® chemistries, for precious metals recovery from primary Au ores and Cu-Au ores. These chemistries was developed to be robust to address the complex mineralogy and gold deportment in these ores. Plant trial data for a variety of ores have confirmed that the both Aero® XD-5002 and MAXGOLD® chemistry are indeed versatile in recovering gold values occurring as gold alloys and/or associated with many types of sulfides, and in altering the deportment of certain sulfides (such as those bearing As, Bi etc). An overview will be given in this paper using plant data to highlight the application of these reagents.INTRODUCTIONThe subject matter of this paper is the flotation of Au containing minerals from their ores. The motivation from this manuscript comes from the several challenges faced with the processing of Au ores, as was articulated in detail by Nagaraj (2008). The biggest challenge is the complex mineralogy; most easy-to-treat free-milling ores bodies are largely depleted. The Au values are distributed in multiple host minerals such as pyrite, pyrrhotite, arsenopyrite and Cu minerals such as chalcopyrite. Au values also happen to be finely disseminated within the various minerals and are sometimes invisible in optical microscopy. Additionally, on any given day, some mines treat multiple ore types, and the mineralogy is different for each ore type.Xanthates continue to be the collectors of choice at most Au and PGM operations around the world. Most primary Au operations tend to consume very large amounts of collectors; the dosage ranges anywhere between 40-400 g/t and this has been attributed to both mineralogical and non-mineralogical factors (non-mineralogical factors include the low cost of xanthates and the mindset that “more is always better”, which is not necessarily the case). In addition, several studies now show that xanthates alone are never sufficient where multiple value minerals are present, and that supplementary collectors are required. The large doses present a substantial cost to the minerals industry, and many mining companies have expressed the need for more efficient reagents that can improve metallurgical performance at low dosages."

The monthly tonnage extracted approximates 30,000 tons in normal times.The ore is a mixed sulphide containing galena and marmatite; the gangue minerals are principally calcite, rhodonite, quartz and garnet.A typical assay for a monthly period is 14·40/0 Pb., 5·6 ozs. Ag., and 11· 60/0 Zn. The whole of the ore is concentrated on the property by combined gravity and flotation methods. The lead and 'zinc concentrates produced are railed to other centres for the extraction of the contained metals.MINING METHODSMining practice throughout the field varies only in minor details. The ore-bodies forming the Broken Hill Lode lie within complex folds arranged along a shear and vary in size and mineralogical associations, but all the mines have similar types. Some of the ore-bodies have weak walls, but the chief difficulty in mining is caused by "heads" and "flaws" in the ore.Besides these local weak areas there are ground movements-referred to later-of varying magnitude extending throughout the central portion of the lode where the large ore-bodies, several hundred feet wide, approached the surface.

Heavy structures in central Cleveland, Ohio, are supported on raft foundations, driven piles, or caissons. Settlements can be predicted and structures are designed to accommodate such settlements. On one project the settlements were not provided for in the design of the structure. Soils are sands, silts, and varved clays to shale. A rift in a central area is 600 feet deep. The recent drop in the value of the South African Rand has resulted in an increased export value for South African coal and has lead to new coal reserves becoming available for mining. Very often these reserves are in close proximity to existing structures and utilities thus calling for stringent blast control measures to keep the risk of vibration, air blast and fly rock damage to a minimum.

Uranium is a naturally occurring radioactive material in the earth?s crust. Geological processes have resulted in concentration of uranium into ore mined for its gold content in South Africa. This uranium is present in the form of discrete particles of uranium minerals, generally oxides, which are normally insoluble. Chemical and physical processes during gold mining and extraction, particularly when carried out in conjunction with uranium extraction and sulphuric acid manufacture, act on the uranium minerals and the radioactive decay products of uranium. This may result insignificant accumulations of radioactive materials in certain parts of the process. There are a number of naturally occurring radioactive materials in the earth?s crust, such as Uranium-235, Thorium-232, andPotassium-40. This paper focuses on Uranium-238, together with its decay products, and how they affect the gold mines. Water plays a significant role in the redistribution of radionuclides, both as a physical transport medium, and as a solvent in which chemical reactions take place.

Q.E.D. (QED) is a blast design and evaluation model that allows full three-dimensional design specification including the development of unique “live” terrains and an unlimited variety of complex charge configurations. QED’s analysis package allows the examination of likely outcomes resulting from changing various design variables in terms of vibration, fragmentation, rock-mass damage and muck-pile profile. Especially applicable to use cautious blasting applications, QED’s damage model uses vibration to estimate rock damage beyond excavation boundaries. This relates directly to operations such as Yucca Mountain Nuclear Waste Repository in Nevada, where damage beyond the excavation perimeter must be tightly controlled. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) h as b een studying a site at Yucca Mountain, NV to determine its suitability for long term storage of nuclear waste. The main mechanism of waste isolation will be the natural barrier of the host rock Total Systems Performance Assessment (ISPA) is used to model the excavation design and its behavior over time. Of importance to TSPA is quantifying the condition of the rock-mass before and after excavation. Ideally, there should be no excavation-induced changes to the rock-mass’ structure (removing the requirement to model the effects). At the least it may be possible to keep excavation-induced damage far enough away from waste packages so that modeling of these effects will not be required. QED can calculate a prediction of the extents of blast induced damage to the rock-mass. By using this metric as a design parameter, it may be possible to complete excavation of the repository more rapidly and inexpensively than previously thought, without jeopardizing the structural integrity of the waste containment areas or requiring blast damage to be modeled by the TSPA. This paper will explain the structure of the QED blast modeling system and show the analysis of historical data from Yucca Mountain. Processing of the historical data and the subsequent results will demonstrate how blast modeling can be used on an ongoing basis to assist the excavation process at Yucca Mountain.

This paper presents the results of an investigation into the influence of hydrodynamics on a preflotation process for the copper sulfide ore from the Fore-Sudetic Monocline deposits in Poland in a flotation machine. The main aim of the preflotation stage for Polish copper ore is to remove the easy-to-float organic matter — organic carbon — that causes serious problems in metallurgical processes. The organic matter is connected with the presence of shale ore. This paper describes the preflotation experiments conducted to investigate the effect of various stirrer speeds. The upgrading selectivity of copper and organic carbon were analyzed and compared. The results show that the effectiveness of separation between organic carbon and copper decreases with increased stirrer speed in the laboratory flotation machine. The more intensive the mixing of the flotation suspension, the lower the selectivity of the preflotation experiment. Lower stirrer speed probably provides lower mechanical entrainment and flotation of copper minerals.

The Hill 50 Gold Mine is situated at Boogardie, 3 miles on a bearing of 295 degrees from; Mount Magnet township. Mount Magnet lies 300 miles north-north-east of Perth, Western Australia (Fig. 1).The older workings of the mine may be identified with those of Sirdar, Gold Mining Lease 696M The Sirdar had been worked before 1902 though no records remain, and irom 1903 to 1912 about a thousana tons at a grade of 6' 2 dwt. was extracted annually; by the end of 1918 6,225 oz. of gold had been obtained from the milling of 17,852 tons of ore. In view of these yields, and the length and width of the lode, this mine was early recognized as one of the most promising in the district. From 1919 to 1924 the ground,including G.M.L. 1282M, was held as Mt. Zion G.M.L. 1183M.The Hill 50 Gold Mine N.L. company took up the workings as Hill 50 G.M.L. 1282M in 1934 and have continued operations to the date of writing. To the end of 1956 the Hill 50 Gold Mine had yielded 982,106 tons of ore for a return of 448,'602 fine oz. of gold.The mine has been described by: J utson (1915), Feldtmann (1920), Johnson (1949), and Finucane (1953). Finucane (1953) details the mine structure to a depth of 414 ft. The author was able to examine the mine to a depth of 1305 ft. Detailed main level mapping to the 1060 level and a detailed surface examination have revealed aspects of the structure which were previously obscure.

"An enhanced gravity concentrator was installed in conjunction with an Intensive Leach Reactor at the Sadiola plant in Mali last year and commissioned in Dec 2007.There has been much debate over the years as to the effect of gravity concentration on overall plant performance. The late Dr Laplante suggested that for every 10% of gold recovered by gravity, there was a corresponding 0.1% to 1% additional overall plant recovery. The results at Sadiola are consistent with this hypothesis with an overall 4% gain in plant recovery.With total gold recovery of 12% in the gravity section, grades are increased from 3.54g/t in the gravity feed to an average of 2 600g/t in the concentrator feed to the in-line reactor. The recovery of gold in the in-line reactor is in excess of 98.5%.This paper discusses the background to the project, the laboratory testwork prior to the equipment selection, the operational results of the system, as well as the benefits of the future application of high mass yield centrifugal concentrators in base metals, sulphides and industrial minerals. Bench scale, pilot scale and plant practice examples are also presented.INTRODUCTIONBesides picking nuggets off the ground or out of riverbeds, gravity concentration is arguably one of the oldest methods of recovering gold. In circa 6000BC people discovered that gold can be found behind the rocks and in depressions of creek beds. By placing rocks in a stretch of channel with the proper slope the first sluice is built, probably around 4,000 BC, and this method is still practiced today."

An expansion of the City of Klamath Falls Wastewater Treatment plant required geotechnical seismic hazard evaluations and deep foundation design. The site is located on the shore of Lake Ewauna and is underlain by diatom rich lake deposits. Diatomaceous soils exhibit unique engineering properties that are not well understood. Cyclic Direct Simple Shear (CDSS) testing was performed on three undisturbed samples to evaluate cyclic and post-cyclic properties of the diatomaceous soils. Results from the CDSS testing indicated that the soils would not liquefy in the classical sense, though cyclic softening behavior was observed. The CDSS results were used to develop a Cyclic Resistance Ratio curve for the diatomaceous soil to compare with clean sand liquefaction curves. Seismic lateral pile capacities were developed using two approaches. One approach used conventional p-multipliers for liquefied soil and modified them to reflect expected excess pore pressure ratios. The other approach applied residual strength and fifty percent strain values from post-cyclic monotonic shear testing. A lateral spread hazard zone was identified along the Lake shoreline and reduced, seismic lateral pile capacities were recommended. The objective of this paper is to report the seismic design considerations for this project in a unique geologic and seismic setting. INTRODUCTION The engineering properties of diatomaceous soils have rarely been studied and the cyclic behavior under seismic loading is generally unknown. Some of the critical geotechnical uncertainties of diatomaceous behavior include potential for large consolidation settlement, influence of irrecoverable strains due to diatom particle crushing, shear strength (peak and residual), and cyclic properties. This paper presents results of cyclic shear testing, seismic evaluations and seismic lateral pile design in diatomaceous soils performed for the expansion of a waste water treatment plant in the city of Klamath Falls, Oregon, site of the largest recorded earthquake in Oregon’s history. The expansion consisted of adding six new facilities at the existing Plant including influent pump station (IPS) and headworks, aeration basin, tertiary treatment, and other buildings. The IPS/headworks and aeration basin will be founded approximately 15 feet below ground. The other buildings will be founded at grade. The existing facilities are supported by timber piles that penetrate the surficial diatomaceous soils and terminate on a hard underlying deposit. Figure 1 shows the site plan and proposed additions.
