First, during design of piled wharf on soft stratum, the bank slope stability is the first important item. Second, the live load, the backfill and the original ground's settlement will influence the wharf structure causes cracks. Two practical examples were illustrated.

This paper presents a summary of allowable bearing pressures and skin friction values that have been used to design drilled pier foundations for support of high-rise structures in downtown Seattle, Washington. These design parameters are based upon a review of geotechnical reports and records of more than 20 building projects. The following pages present a description of the soils encountered at these sites including foundation bearings soils, and design bearing and friction values. The accumulated data is summarized in Table 1, and the locations of the buildings are shown in Figure 1. A detailed description of the construction of two belled drilled piers are presented illustrating typical methods and procedures used in downtown Seattle. The two cases are from the Washington State Convention and Trade Center (WSC&TC). SEATTLE AREA SOILS The Puget Sound area was subjected to several major glaciations during the Pleistocene Epoch. Glacial ice originated in the cordilleran and coastal mountains and the Vancouver Range of British Columbia. The maximum southward advance of ice reached the area about halfway between Olympia and Centralia. As a result of these glaciations, the Puget Lowland was filled to significant depths by glacial and non-glacial sediments during the Pleistocene.

A series of plate loading tests were carried out on a loam ground in order to investigate the influences of the plate size and the loading rate on the observed load-settlement relations. Two circular plates having diameters of 0.3 m and 1.0 m were used. Three types of loading methods were employed; 1) static cyclic maintained load test, 2) static continuous load test, and 3) rapid (dynamic) plate load test. An interpretation method called non-linear damping method was used to estimate a static load-settlement relation from the rapid plate load test signals. The derived static load-settlement relations match well with the measured results from the static load tests.

This '90s 'Public Relations spin' approach, usually backed up by scientific data, technical reports and graphs outlining risk probability and the impact potential on people and communities, is being challenged. Challenged by communities who have greater access to information, demand greater levels of transparency and corporate responsibility of large corporate operations and possess greater awareness of the communities they live in.   The growth of the environmental movement, of anti-globalisation, anti corporatism, apprehension of a large corporate's ability to deal with community issues, and a lack of faith in the abilities of regulators to regulate corporate activities, means our industry faces challenges on multiple fronts. It must now be able to address these from a personal/community perspective if it is to remain relevant within communities.   One of the keys to this is linking the internal activities and responsibilities to the externals concerns and demands for higher levels of operation and care.   This presentation draws on Corporate Public Affairs trends, functions and approaches and the application to External Affairs activities within Newmont Waihi Gold's operations in Waihi and regional exploration activities throughout the Hauraki Goldfields.   The approach presented works on the philosophy that communities don't necessarily have to like what we do, but should be able to identify and recognise the way in which we involve them in decision making, communicate our intentions and respond to issues.

T 0 effectively evaluate property damage that is claimed to have been caused by blasting activities and in order to lay the proper foundation to build the best legal defense, identification of the actual causation for the damages are necessary. For the past twenty years, engineering personnel from VCE, Inc. (previously Vibration Control Engineering, Inc.) have been evaluating claimed blasting damages with pre- and postblast inspections, with analysis of seismic levels, blasting amounts at given distances, and with other engineering considerations. In addition to these evaluations, they have also documented other causes for damages which are of the types that are often claimed as blasting damage.

Development of Grindability Tests Based on Direct Measurement of Energy Nowadays, for the characterisation of the grindability different grindability indices - Bond-work index (Wi), Hardgrove Grindability Index (HGI) or Zeisel specific grindability (Wt) - are used. Generally, the grindability tests are carried out under relatively simplified circumstances, in a special dry batch mill with defined feed size material until prescribed conditions are reached at room temperature. However, in the fine- and ultra fine grinding, which is a frequent task (fly ash, tailings, alumina, etc), a fine material (<50 - 200 ¦m) is usually ground down to the few micrometers. The conventional grindability testing methods and apparatuses (Bond-, Hardgrove-, Zeisel-processes) for their determination, although, are not suitable directly to measure the grindability of such fine materials, since the maximal particle size of the feed material (0.5 - 3 mm) to be tested is much higher. One of the important goals of the research carried out in our Institute was to develop the novel grindability testing methods, which are suitable for the fine and ultra fine grinding, and additionally provide the possibility for the fast determination of the grindability. In order to realise the above aim the conventional Bond- and Hardgrove- mills were modified in order to directly measure the grinding work. In particular, the Hardgrove-mill was equipped with a simple torque-meter (load cell). The Bond-mill was rigged with a digital electric power measurer. The systematic experiments were carried out parallel in both mills using the conventional and the developed methods. Finally the results of both were compared. The measuring results have proved that the Bond-work index can be determined based on the developed methods. The new grindability testing methods were applied successfully in several industrial research tasks for the determination of the specific grinding energy and the Bond-work index. These methods can be also used in the industrial practice for the control of the grinding process.

In a previous study, the e?cacy of commercial and prototype impactors for sampling diesel particulate matter (DPM) in coal mines was investigated. Laboratory and ?eld samples were collected on quartz-?ber ?lters and analyzed for organic and elemental carbon. Coal dust contributed a minimal amount of elemental carbon when commercial cascade impactors and prototype impactors, designed by the University of Minnesota (UMN) and the US Bureau of Mines (BOM), were used to collect submicrometer dust fractions. Other impactors were not as e?ective at excluding coal dust. The impactors evaluated in that study were either not commercially available or were multi-stage, expensive, and di?cult to use for personal measurements. A commercial version of the BOM impactor, called the DPM Cassette, was recently introduced by SKCs. Tests were conducted to evaluate the performance of the DPM Cassette for measuring diesel-source elemental carbon in the presence of coal dust. Bituminous coals from three mines in two di?erent coal provinces were examined. The dust particle diameters were small and the coal dust contained a high percentage of carbon, there by giving a worst-case condition for non-anthracite coal mines. Results for the DPM Cassette were essentially identical to those obtained by the BOM impactors in a previous study. At a respirable coal dust concentration of 5.46mg m3, which is 3.8 times the regulatory limit, the DPM Cassette collected only 34µg m3 of coal-source elemental carbon.

Recent studies and limited tests indicate favorable results utilizing high accuracy electronic detonator technology over conventional non-electric pyrotechnic systems. This study discusses the application of this technology using the Daveytronic programmable system in an on-going production basis. The study quantifies the performance as it relates to fragmentation, excavation, vibration and productivity in an eastern U.S. aggregate mining operation. In order to insure accurate data, tight field controls were adhered to during the drilling and blasting process as they related to blast design, bench preparation, pattern layout, drilling and blasthole loading. Following the blast the excavation and crushing procedures were studied to quantify any down stream advantages due to improvements in fragmentation. This study will help provide the industry with information as to the advantages of high accuracy electronic blasting systems over conventional pyrotechnic systems and show the results of an operation utilizing electronic detonator technology through their production season.

llmenite from the west coast of the South Island, New Zealand, shows exceptional reactivity with dilute sulphuric acid. Based on this, a cyclic acid leaching process was developed for the production of material with more than 98% TiO2, suitable as a substitute for mineral rutile.Titanium hydrate is recovered from the leach liquor by hydrolysis, and is calcined to give the required product.Ferrous sulphate is crystallized from the hydrolysis filtrates, which after concentration are returned to the leaching stage. The need for further evaluation of the process on a larger scale is indicated.

El método de minado es un componente importante de la estimaciòn de reservas, y el beneficio del proyecto está condicionado a la habilidad de minar selectivamente. En ese sentido, los métodos de lixiviación fallan en proveer estimaciones imparciales de mineral recuperable y exponen el proyecto a un riesgo indebido. Por ello, se preveó otro método alternativo como el Condicionamiento Uniforme y las Variables de Servicio donde las estimaciones puedan ser deducidas de un conjunto de simulaciones condicionales, que requieren menos hipòtesis pero consumen más tiempo. Por ello, el presente trabajo señala la variación de las reservas recuperables de acuerdo a la selección de método de estimación. La aplicación de tres métodos de estimación no linear- en un depósito de cobre se comparan con asunciones teòricas y las caracterìsticas geológicas del depósito. La performance relativa de cada método es evaluada por comparaciòn de las curvas de tonelaje-ley y contenido metàlico sobre un cut-off lìmite.

A data science based dilution study was conducted to identify the causes of dilution at South32’s Cannington Mine (Cannington), a large open stoping operation. In terms of industry benchmarks for unplanned dilution, Cannington is already performing very well, and so opportunities for improvement are more difficult to identify. The study is based upon back analysis of nearly 150 case studies from the mines reconciliation database, and has quantified the relative effect and significance levels for the following dilution parameters; time until paste filling, faulting and cable bolt reinforcement. Specifically, significant contributions were associated with faults and stope open duration. Quantifying the effect of faults on stability graph accuracy enabled a site specific adjustment to improve the predictive ability of the Cannington stability graph (unstable stope specificity improved from 63 per cent to 74 per cent). Despite Cannington’s already high levels of stope performance compared to industry benchmarks, data science methods have identified a complex interaction between identified dilution factors (ie stope open duration, presence of faults and cablebolting). Specifically, a third order Factorial ANOVA (Analysis of Variance) provided evidence that stope open duration reduces the effectiveness of cable bolts in faulted ground (average dilution = 2.1 m, p-value = 0.13). These results are consistent with site observations of a relationship between the stope open duration and the extent of failure when unravelling on a fault, even when cables are present.CITATION:Maher, K, Stewart, P C and Robotham, S, 2016. Recent advances in computing, rendering, and display technologies have generated increased accessibility for virtual reality (VR). VR allows the creation of dynamic, high-fidelity environments to simulate dangerous situations, test conditions, and visualize concepts. Consequently, numerous products have been developed, but many of these are limited in scope. Therefore, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health researchers developed a VR framework, called VR Mine, to rapidly create an underground mine for human data collection, simulation, visualization, and training. This paper describes the features of VR Mine using self-escape and proximity detection as case studies. Features include mine generation, simulated networks, proximity detection systems, and the integration and visualization of real-time ventilation models.

"Gold-bearing mineralization at Anomaly A occurs in polydeformed Ordovician turbidites of the Kendall Mountain Formation of the St. Croix belt in southwestern New Brunswick, and is hosted by WSWtrending, shallow-dipping, brittle-ductile high-strain zones associated with the latest stage of the second of four regional deformation events. Gold-bearing syn-deformational stockwork, massive, and multiply brecciated quartz-sulfide veined zones form irregular pods and sheets up to several meters thick, which contain arsenopyrite, pyrrhotite, pyrite, stibnite, and a variety of rare minerals that are gold-bearing. Mineralized zones are enveloped by locally auriferous, weakly to intensely altered wall rock. Vein paragenesis includes: (1) early (pre- to syn-D2) quartz-chlorite veins that are largely the product of migration of quartz by pressure solution; (2) crosscutting, multiphase, vuggy quartz-sulfide veins that contain most of the gold and are interpreted to be structurally controlled; (3) late, crosscutting, nondeformed, non-gold-bearing veins containing laumontite, chlorite, muscovite, quartz, fluorite, and base metal sulfides. Carbonate-poor alteration associated with zones of gold mineralization is lithology-specific, and appears to reflect overprinting of multiple events. Major elements removed during alteration include Si, Na, Mn, and Mg. The minor and trace elements removed include Co, Li, Sc, and possibly Sr, Ni, and Zn. Minor and trace elements added include Au, Ag, As, Sb, S, and possibly F, Cu, Pb, and Zr. On the basis of proximity, time constraints, and a similar ore mineral assemblage, gold mineralization at Anomaly A is interpreted to be a distal equivalent of the intrusion-related gold mineralization at the nearby Clarence Stream Main zone deposit. A new process comprising metallizing reduction, magnetic separation, and electroheat melting separation is proposed with the aim of achieving high recoveries of iron, vanadium, and titanium from vanadium titanomagnetite. The effects of magnetic intensity, reduction temperature, reduction time, carbon ratio, and coal particle size on the efficiency of reductionmagnetic separation were investigated, the reaction mechanisms elucidated by SEM and EDS analysis, and the optimal process parameters established. Recoveries of up to 80.08% for titanium, 95.07% for iron, and 71.60% for vanadium were achieved. The reduction sequence is shown to be: Fe2O3 ? Fe3O4 ? FeO ? Fe; Fe2TiO5 ? Fe2TiO4 + TiO2 ? Fe + FeTiO3 ? Fe + FeTi2O5 ? Fe + TiO2.

Open caissons are used for many geotechnical engineering applications. Open caissons may be used as deep foundation elements bypassing weak soils to tip in firm deeper strata, and in rivers and maritime construction to reduce the risk of scour. Open caissons are also used for collecting sewage water through gravity sewer pipe networks or from sewer force mains. In such applications, the design and construction of open caissons require a detailed soil investigation program. In this way, the design and construction plan of an open caisson can be developed with full knowledge of the prevailing subsoil conditions. The engineering and construction techniques are key factors to achieve functional caissons. Based on close observations during construction stages, the current study presents some challenges that were encountered during the construction of two open caissons of internal diameters 20 m and 10 m (65.6 ft and 32.8 ft). This paper describes the procedure followed to alleviate the construction difficulties encountered. Site exploration program and control measures required to satisfy design and construction requirements are crucial aspects. Sinking of open caissons in dense or very dense sands is risky. Incorrect sinking of open caissons may cause extra cost, delay in construction, and harm to nearby structures. Air/water jetting near the cutting edge of an open caisson, outside slurry trench, and/or inside open trench may be used to drive an open caisson downward. Unsymmetrical work around an open caisson may lead to tilting of the caisson. If this occurs, the tilt should be immediately corrected before resuming the sinking process. Improper cleaning of fine materials on the caisson?s excavation bed, and/or inappropriate pouring of underwater concrete may result in a defective concrete seal. The paper contains a series of practical guidelines to assist those intending to use open caissons, and shares good caisson sinking practice with practitioners. Finally, the study aims to understand the difficulties encountered and to anticipate future problems.

Elemental sulfur and volatilization kiln slag(VKS)containing heavy-metal produced by smelter factories were used to produce sulfured building material. The effects of heating mode, material proportion (MSulfur:MVKS), size of waste particles and ratio of aggregate to filler(A/F) on the mechanical properties and leaching toxicities of solidified stuff were investigated. The optimal conditions for the solidification are stepped heating mode, 3:7 ratio of MSulfur to MVKS, particle size less than 150µm and 3/17 ratio of A/F. Under the above optimal conditions, the compressive strength of solidified stuff rises to 35 MPa, and water absorption is down to 4%-6%.Furthermore, when NaOH is applied as an additive in the process of solidification, the 2+concentrations of most heavy metals except Pb have reached the national leaching toxicity standard. The results of X-ray diffraction reveal that sulfured solidification is caused by the physical encapsulation rather than chemical transformation.

"Abstract A seven storey Northbridge area of Perth, Western Australia presented residential apartment complex located in the an opportunity for a novel application of Cutter Soil Mix technology (CSM). The development included a two-level basement for car parking which covered the full site area. However, the basement was also required to extend under an existing single story heritage building. Soil conditions comprised 2m of fill overlying medium dense to dense sands that in turn were overlying a very stiff clay stratum at approximately 14-16m depth. The ground water table was located at a depth of approximately 1m below the natural surface level.A site boundary consisting of a reinforced CSM retention system and was designed and installed to allow the excavation to proceed to basement level. Two rows of temporary soils anchors or inclined struts were required to achieve this. A CSM support system for the heritage building was also designed and constructed to provide temporary support during excavation and permanent construction works. The brief for the contract works emphasised that it was vital that settlements of the heritage building be kept within strict limits.CSM is a relatively new introduction to the Australian construction market, using a modified trench cutter to mix a binder slurry with in situ soils, generally to form cut-off walls, retaining walls and soil improvement works. This project is understood to be first application of the CSM for underpinning work in Australia.This paper discusses the site background details leading to the decision by the client to adopt CSM technology, and the design and construction aspects to meet the challenges offered by this project.Introduction190 Newcastle St is a 7-level residential apartment complex located in the Northbridge area of Perth, Western Australia. The development includes a 2 level basement for car parking, which covers the full site area. The basement also extends under a single story heritage building, which remained in-situ throughout the building works.A site boundary retention system was required to allow the excavation to basement level to proceed. In addition, a support system for the heritage building was required to provide temporary support during excavation and permanent construction works."
