The mineral composition and microtextures of a cubanite-rich sulphide ore are described and cubanite breakdown textures are illustrated. The occurrence of cubanite in macroscopic dimensions is featured.The origin of the ore is tentatively related to a composite ore fluid arising initially from an ultramalic source and extracting some metal components from an older granite mass along the margin of which the serpentine was emplaced. Some alternative possibilities as to origin are also mentioned.

"In seeking to supply the ever increasing needs for raw materials, the mining industry has been required to develop lower grade resources in increasingly remote regions of the world. This has resulted in the extension of many frontiers, both technologically and geographically.The accent of mineral processing research over the last few decades has been to “do existing things better”. There have been many breakthroughs in equipment and processes; however in general the accent has been to increase capacity of existing unit processes, often by orders of magnitude, or to refine the process itself by basic research and development. This has lead to added sophistication, enabling the process engineer to maintain optimum performance of his equipment while reducing the cost, and the amount of labour needed to operate the plant.While much of the increased requirement for resources is handled by the development of ever larger, lower grade orebodies, a significant portion still comes from the small miner - even the artisanal miner - operating in remote and often politically sensitive parts of the world. For them, innovation and simplicity are the keys, not sophistication.The tension between sophistication and simplicity - or research and reality - is specially evident in the area of gravity concentration of rare metals, such as tin and tantalum. This paper looks at this tension, primarily from the eyes of an operator and seeks to put into perspective the two paradigms."

The Resource Management Act 1991 (RMA) and the Crown Minerals Act 1991 (CMA) both came into force on 1 October 1991. The purpose behind RMA was to integrate the existing laws dealing with town and country planning, land subdivision, water and soil, minerals and energy resources, coastal management, air pollution and noise control into one omnibus Act. Originally, there was a section in RMA dealing with minerals. However, this section was taken out of RMA and a companion piece of legislation - namely CMA - was passed with RMA.

Industrial minerals play a central and dual role in the sustainable development (SD) of natural resources. Over the past decade the mining industry has increasingly focused on sustainably extracting and processing industrial minerals. This trend has been driven by higher energy costs, diminishing water resources and sensitivity towards environmental stewardship. Industrial minerals have been used throughout human history as low cost, naturally occurring, materials. Today they are critical components of recycled packaging, energy efficient building materials, light weight paper coatings, and other products critical to the responsible utilization of global resources. As industrial minerals become more widely used in ?green? products, mining companies have established best practices for the sustainable management of industrial minerals mining and processing. These management practices include reducing energy consumption, minimizing water usage, increasing waste recovery through recycling and process optimization, and maximizing the amount of ore extracted per acre of disturbed land. With the commitment to SD principles, quantitative methods for objectively measuring SD performance have become increasingly important. Measuring sustainability impact is a valuable tool for effectively applying SD principles and for making choices that balance sustainable development against other business objectives. SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT AND MINING Sustainable development is a term that has become a common part of our lexicon; however, it has multiple meanings and interpretations leading to a sometimes confusing and contradictory array of definitions. The absence of a single, precise definition reflects the fact that SD is a broad concept or paradigm that offers guiding principles as opposed to a specific set of criteria or regulations enforceable by government or other oversight agencies. While a principle based conceptual approach allows businesses to broadly apply SD practices that are tailored to their specific situation, it has also led the public to sometimes view voluntary corporate SD programs with a degree of skepticism (Walker and Howard 2002). This is particularly true in the mining industry. One reason for this skepticism is that the relationship between SD and mining is misunderstood and to many, sustainably developing non-renewable mineral resources is a contradiction (Rajaram et al. 2005). However, this view takes a very narrow interpretation of the tenets of SD. The second is that mining carries a legacy of poor environmental stewardship that does not accurately reflect current corporate environmental practices Many minerals companies have adopted the Brundtland Comission?s definition of SD (United Nations 1987): ?? development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs?. This definition is very broad and can be interpreted in a number of ways. It provides a general context for sustainable development and is not intended to provide detailed guidelines addressing specific aspects of sustainable development. To fill this gap the following SD principles were drafted by the international minerals community in 2003 (ICMM 2003): 1. Implement and maintain ethical business practices and sound systems of corporate governance. 2. Integrate sustainable development considerations within the corporate decision-making process. 3. Uphold fundamental human rights and respect cultures, customs and values in dealings with employees and others who are affected by our activities. 4. Implement risk management strategies based on valid data and sound science. 5. Seek continual improvement of our health and safety performance. 6. Seek continual improvement of our environmental performance. 7. Contribute to conservation of biodiversity and integrated approaches to land use planning. 8. Facilitate and encourage responsible product design, use, re-use, recycling and disposal of our products. 9. Contribute to the social, economic and institutional development of the communities in which we operate. 10. Implement effective and transparent engagement, communication and independently verified reporting arrangements with our stakeholders. These guidelines insure that SD concepts are applied equally across the industry while setting a clear performance standard and benchmark against which to evaluate success. By adopting these principles and issuing the Milos Statement (http://www.sdimi.org/milos_decl_October%206_2003.pdf), which provides a more detailed vision for integrating SD into everyday business operations, the minerals industry has embraced SD as a core corporate value. The unifying and holistic approach embodied in SD principles impacts the entire mine to market life cycle and addresses the economic, environmental and social consequences of mining. INDUSTRIAL MINERALS The world economy relies heavily on minerals; they are essential to economic prosperity and the quality of life. Industrial minerals are non-metallic, non-fuel minerals that provide the raw materials for a vast range of products used in most every aspect of daily life. They are mined and processed worldwide and they span the spectrum from relatively low value, high volume commodities (e.g. common clay, crushed stone) that are usually mined locally to high value, low volume specialty materials that are sourced from unique one of a kind deposits (e.g. barite, talc, mica). High volume commodity mining operations are often located near the end use market which, in most cases, means areas of high population density where construction and other urban activities drive demand. In these situations the strict adherence to SD principles is particularly critical as these are highly visible operations that must meet the public?s demand for good corporate citizenship. These operations are similar to chemical or other manufacturing facilities that operate near population centers. "IntroductionThe copper-molybdenum property of Brenda Mines Ltd. is located 18 miles north west of Peachland in the Okanagan Valley of the Southern Central interior of British Columbia. The actual site is 50 miles north of the international boundary and 150 air miles east of Vancouver at an elevation of 5000 feet above sea level. The earliest written mention of the prospect is found in the Geological Survey of Canada, Memoir No. 243, issued in 1947 by Dr. H.M.A. Rice. In 1954 the area was staked by a prospector, Bob Bechtel, who interested Bern Brynelsen of Noranda Exploration in examining the claims. A joint Noranda - Kennecott program resulted but since the grades were so low the property was not taken up until in 1964 a re-examination by Chapman, Wood and Griswold produced recommendations leading to the construction of the Brenda Mine as it is today.The rounded, timber covered mountains of the area are composed of the tuffs, argillites and limestones of the Upper Triassic Nicola Group, which is intruded by a Jurassic quartz diorite, called the Brenda stock0 The actual orebody occurs in a strongly fractured zone within the Brenda stock, approximately 1500 feet from the contact with the Nicola group0 The ore minerals, .chalcopyrite and molybdenite, associated with pyrite and magnetite of lesser importance, occur as fillings within the fractures 0 The grade of the ore decreases outwards from a central higher grade core and in January 1971 total reserves were estimated at 165 million tons assaying 0,182% Copper and 0,049% Mo."

The development and use of rock mass classification tools have been a key component for improving stope design over the past 4 years at the Xstrata Zinc George Fisher Mine in northern Queensland, Australia. In 2003, stope extraction data from 3 years of open-stope mining provided an excellent situation to review the assumptions in the feasibility study. Extracted stope profile information, drillhole geotechnical data, underground observations, and oral and written communication were used to develop a thorough stope reconciliation performance database. With-out collecting the back analysis data and presenting the data in a usable format, engineers are left to debate opinion instead of engineered judgment. This can lead to biased and uninformed design parameter choices with the potential to repeat poor design. This paper demonstrates some effective, practical examples of empirical data collection where rock mass classifications tools were developed and used to create improved confidence in predicting stope stability and failure profiles. The work contributed to design changes that resulted in a reduction in stope hangingwall dilution and an increase in head grade while continuing to ramp up production from 2003–2005.

To achieve an efficient separation in the flotation process, valuable particles need to be selectively segregated from the gangue while utilising a minimum number of flotation stages. TodayÆs existing flotation technologies are effective for fine particle size classes; however, limitations due to particle buoyancy and bubble-particle detachment restrict the effectiveness of traditional flotation approaches on coarser particles. As a result, flotation circuits are generally configured to process only fine particle size classes in order to maximise recovery in the primary stages. Eriez has invented a novel flotation technology, the HydroFloat, which overcomes these limitations by carrying-out flotation in a dense, fluidised-bed medium allowing for the recovery of coarse particles (>0.250 mm). Over the last 15 years, this technology has been successfully applied to industrial minerals with several full-scale units installed to recover particles up to and exceeding 3 mm diameter in primary flotation circuits. This paper includes discussions on the history of this technology, process theory, existing applications, and a review of recent sulphide-based laboratory test work conducted for Newcrest mining and others. THE following short paper on the Blair Athol coal-field will no doubt have a twofold interest to members from the fact that its main seam, known as the "Big Seam" of a maximum thickness of 91 ft without a band, is unique, being probably the thickestseam of high-grade clean coal yet known, and also because of the interesting problem it presents the colliery engineer-viz., which system of mining is the best to secure the highest economical extraction.Location - Blair Athol is a mining township in Central Queensland, situated at an altitude of about 1100 ft. above sea-level at the end of a branch railway line 74, miles from Emerald, on the Main Central Western line, and 240 miles by rail from Rockhampton.Geology - The coal-measures appear to lie in a shallow basin of about four or five square miles in area, surrounded on all sides by slates and schists, which are overlaid oh three sides by alluvial deposits of up to 150 ft. in thickness, and on the fourth by a thick basalt bed, as yet unproved, some miles beyond which the auriferous slates outcrop. These alluvial deposits have been largely worked in years past and gave high gold returns, the chief diggings being Clermont and Macdonald's Flats in the south, the Springs and Black Ridge in the north-east, and Yankee Creek and others on the west. The surface of the coal-fields may be described as unbroken, but undulating, with gentle southerly dip, the watercourses opening out into wide flats. The Bayswater seam of the Singleton Coal Measures is discussed in relation to its field occurrence and related li~hotype profiles. The seam is correlated throughout widely separated areas of the Hunter Valley with the Farrells Creek seam at Howick, Broke seam at Broke, and Saddlers Creek seam at Mt. Arthur. The unusual features of composition of the seam in relation to adjacent seams is dealt with in terms of the seam environment, particular attention being given to the sandstone at the base of .the seam. Petrographic and other data are used to support the arguments submitted.

The present study was carried out to investigate the impact of slag refractory lining reactions on the formation of inclusions during ladle treatment of steel. The experiments were conducted on an industrial scale in the ladle at Uddeholm Tooling AB in Hagfors, Sweden. The inclusion chemistry and population during ladle treatment were studied along with the composition of the ladle glaze, taken from the ladle lining. The inclusions in the steel were classified into four groups according to the Swedish standard SS 111116. SEM/EDS analyses were carried out to identify the phases present in both the inclusions and the ladle glaze. The number of inclusions in the steel before deoxidation was found to increase with the ladle age, i.e. the number of times the ladle had been in use. A similar increase was also found after vacuum degassing and before casting. A great portion of inclusions before casting was found to be supplied by ladle glaze. This observation was further confirmed and explained by thermodynamic analysis. The present results show that ladle glaze is a major source of inclusions in the ladle at Uddeholm Tooling. Roof support systems are necessary to provide stable mine openings and much research has been conducted to design a variety of roof support systems that will function in various manners to ensure that stable ground conditions are achieved. Despite these advancements in technology, mistakes continue to be made in the evaluation and/or installation that significantly degrade the support capability or lead to erroneous determinations of support expectations. The purpose of this paper is to discuss misconceptions about how roof supports perform and factors that impact their performance. The goal is to present practical information that will assist mine operators and engineers in selecting, installing, and evaluating roof support systems properly, and help them to avoid mistakes that can lead to erroneous expectations and potentially catastrophic results that may lead to roof falls. The paper is limited to a discussion of secondary roof support systems and powered roof supports such as longwall shields.

Two of the problems long associated with the complete extraction of level pillars in the wide ore bodies of Broken Hill have been: (1) The high cost of maintaining level gangways through areas of slow subsidence to provide adequate trucking roads for the transport of sand filling; and (2) The difficulty and high cost of completely filling depleted areas. This paper deals with the experiments conducted to devise an apparatus for transporting, with the aid of compressed air, sandfill from the underground sand passes to the stopes and describes the sand blower which has been developed. This apparatus has to a large degree overcome the difficulties and removed much of the hazard associated with the rapid extraction of level pillars.Special attention is drawn to the sizing analysis of the sand and to the fact that it is not dry material. The recovery of copper from oxide ores containing from 2% to 4.1% acid-soluble copper from the Sarcheshmeh mine in Kerman province of Iran was investigated by agitation leaching in sulfuric acid media. Quartz, as a major constituent, and malachite, as the major copper mineral, were identified in the ore by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and microscopic studies. A series of leaching experiments on the ore was performed over a concentration range of 10 to 20 g/L and temperatures from 15° to 50°C for a maximum of 3 hours. An initial high dissolution of copper was followed by a very slow reaction. By increasing acid concentration and temperature, the dissolution rate of copper was accelerated. However, by increasing acid concentration, the acid consumption of ores was also increased. Surface morphology of solid residues at various leaching times was examined with a scanning electron microscope (SEM). All SEM micrographs of the partially reacted particles displayed a needle structure. The kinetic studies showed that the malachite dissolution rate could be modeled in two stages. About 85% of the malachite dissolution occurred in Stage 1, while the remaining 15% occurred in Stage 2. The data obtained for the leaching kinetics indicate that the dissolution for Stage 1 was a diffusion-controlled reaction with an activation energy of about 20.6 kJ/mole, and the dissolution for the Stag 2 was a chemical-controlled reaction with an activation energy of about 87.6 kJ/mole.

Four significant soil nail wall projects in the eastern United States were recently completed with a combined area of 175,000 square feet of finished shotcrete surface. These projects required the use of innovative design and construction methods in order to address various challenges, including slide-prone back slope materials, perched water, highly erodible rock materials, curved wall alignments, very tight construction tolerances and unexpected subsurface conditions. Special focus is given to issues such as bench excavation, soil nail installation methods, shotcrete mix design, anticipated shotcrete quantities, shotcrete nozzlemen qualifications and weather conditions, in order to provide a lessons-learned database for future soil nail wall design and inspector considerations. These projects also underscore the importance of design engineer and soil nail wall contractor qualifications as well as effective communication with the owner.

From this bluk by magnetic separation dual concentrates of high grade iron concentrate (~65%Fe and total Sulfur of 0.26%) and the second concentrate is barite of (60.87% BaO and total impurities of less than 3%).

An original application of ANSYS simulated the forming of the temperature field of a massive casting from ductile cast-iron during the application various methods of its cooling using chills. The numerical model managed to optimize more than one method of cooling but, in addition to that, provided serious results for the successive model of structural and chemical heterogeneity, and so it also contributes to influencing the pouring structure. The file containing the acquired results from both models brings new and, simultaneously, remarkable findings of causal relationships between the structural and chemical heterogeneity and the local solidification time in any point of the casting. The determined relations therefore enable the prediction of the face density of the spheroids of graphite in dependence on the local solidification time. The calculated temperature field of 500x500x1000 mm casting of ductile cast-iron with various methods of cooling has successfully been compared with temperatures obtained experimentally. It is shown that factors associated with conditions whIch are thermodynamically favourable for the formation of CuS04 in roasting lead to high copper recoveries on leaching. One of these factors is the ratio of the air to solids used for roasting. This can be varied widely without loss of temperature control in the sulphating roasting of many Australian copper concentrates.Thus, the prediction of the air to solids ratio corresponding to a maximum p(SO3) value, for a given concentrate and temperature, is of importance in fluidized bed roasting, since this could be associated with the formation of a maximum quantity of CuS04. Calculations are presented which predict this air to solids ratio, not only for a given concentrate composition, temperature, and pressure, but also for air which is enriched with sulphur dioxide or oxygen.
