"SynopsisAlmost 20 years have passed since the cutting-edge research by Thompson and Visser on the design and management of opencast mine haul roads was conducted in South Africa. This system is based on three principles, namely the structural ability to support the ultra-heavy truck loads, the selection of vehicle and environmentally friendly riding surface, and an appropriate level of maintenance to counteract wear and tear. Obviously, proper layout and geometry are essential.These principles have been implemented worldwide, and it is useful to review the lessons learned. The objectives of this paper are to present a critical review of the status of mine haul road design and management, and the impact that these principles have made on operations, particularly the cost-effectiveness. The paper briefly reviews the principles of the haul road design and management and the extent to which they are applicable. Case studies of a number of implementations are presented to demonstrate that the principles are sound and have been applied effectively. For example, at an international operation the transport cost of coal was 40% more expensive than anticipated in the feasibility stage, and this made the mining operation uneconomic. Correction of this problem resulted in a viable enterprise. Although designed for opencast operations, the principles are equally valid for underground operations, and initial development work will be discussed.The main conclusions are that the research approach is valid and its effectiveness has been demonstrated in a number of applications. The anticipated financial benefit has been derived, and has made the mining operations that used the principles more effective. One of the most important goals of the experiments is to determine deformation and strength of the rock specimen under applying triaxial load, the status of failure condition is one of the subjects which can be used in soil mechanic and foundation engineering applications. To investigate the effect of confining pressure on the triaxial test, the rock has been considered as bonded-particles method and has been simulated by particle flow code three dimensions (PFC3D). This model, does not have pre-existing microcracks and all the particles have the same size (2 mm diameter), equal to the real specimen shape. To compare the mechanical behavior and failure pattern of the numerical and experimental results at uniaxial and triaxial tests at the same conditions, the Young's modulus, Possion's ratio as well as maximum axial stress have been considered. On the other hand, the microcracks growth and change of failure pattern at the modelling of the uniaxial and triaxial tests with different confining pressures up to failure point were reported. According to the experimental work, the number density of microcracks decreases from starting value and remains almost constant up to the failure beyond that point. The comparison of the numerical and experimental results of maximum axial stress and the Possion's ratio revealed good accordance. The initial number density of microcracks at the model was zero and increased while microcracking. Also, the sudden increment around the maximum stress was observed which is because of unstable growing of microcracks near the maximum stress. In all uniaxial and triaxial tests with different confining stresses, the number density of microcracks during the failure remains almost constant which can be considered as a proof of failure occurring in the model. The experimental results indicate the similar trend as well.

Rock mass strength and brittleness generally have a significant impact on both cavability and fragmentation. Variability in these properties across a panel or block footprint is of particular interest because stronger units have the potential to significantly impact cave shape. This paper describes how FLAC3D™ was used to examine the impact of variability in rock mass properties on predicted cave performance to aid in assessing potential risks associated with the proposed design.A case study orebody was subdivided into a number of domains to reflect the heterogeneity of the rock mass at the scale of a proposed inclined cave. The results suggest that the presence of stronger units has the potential to impact cave shape significantly in the southern half of the cave footprint and could increase the potential for cave stalling at shallow depths. If this unit is stronger and less brittle than expected, an overhang is predicted to develop in the southern half of the inclined cave at depth. The effective hydraulic radius is significantly reduced due to the overhang in the south, and the cave could eventually stall at shallower depths in the north.CITATION:Garza-Cruz, T V and Pierce, M E, 2016. Over the past eight years, Phelps Dodge (a subsidiary of Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold, Inc.) devoted a significant amount of effort to the development of a suite of processes for the effective hydrometallurgical treatment of copper sulfide concentrates. This effort resulted in the development of high-temperature (>200ºC) and medium-temperature (150° to 165ºC) pressure leaching processes. Specific configurations of both processes have been commercially demonstrated at Phelps Dodge?s facility in Bagdad, Arizona. This paper reviews in detail the chemistry of medium-temperature pressure leaching of copper concentrates and reports on the process development work conducted by Phelps Dodge and others for this technology. This paper is Part I of a four-part series on this technology. Part II covers the development of medium-temperature pressure leaching and direct electrowinning technology; Part III considers the large-scale demonstration of the MT-DEW-SX process at Bagdad, Arizona; and Part IV addresses the development and design of a full-scale commercial application at Morenci, Arizona.

The consequences of rock blasting with explosives are directly related to the accuracy of drilling and, because they have an effect on fragmentation and ground level, they should be controlled to ensure a problem free production, increase work safety and reduce environment impact. Safety control is one of the most important processes in detonation, since it can compromise the worker security on site and, eventually, neighboring communities. Due to the technology advancements, it is possible to build a hole deviation control device with “of the shelf” parts, and for that reason the authors decided to evaluate the possibility of measuring hole deviation by creating a portable prototype using an electronic sensor capable of measuring the acceleration on objects, that is, to measure the own acceleration of a system, known as "accelerometer" and a micro-controller to handle and treat data. The main idea behind this paper is to validate the power of the Euler method, given the stepping limitations of the sensor and micro controller in order to reproduce of the hole shape. A case study was carried out, comparing the measurements of borehole deviations made by a traditional equipment and the prototype. A mobile application was also created in order to recover and treat and display the data to the user. For validation of the prototype, several holes were measured using the two devices. A residue analysis was used to validate the data obtained. After analyzing and confirming the effectiveness of the new equipment, the normality tests prove a symmetric distribution with null expected residual mean and minimum variance. Consequently, the accuracy of the prototype is evidenced. Thus, the authors aspire to emphasize the potential of using these sensors allied to a traditional numerical method for analysis of hole deviation.

"Abstract: 1 Sophia Spoortunnel Marco Ziller, Trevi S.p.A.:For the construction of 14 cross passages connecting the twin tunnels of the Sophiaspoortunnel the Artificial Ground Freezing technique was applied as temporary soil improvement. AGF by Brine and Liquid Nitrogen was implemented. Automatic data acquisition and recording systems were installed to monitor the variation of the temperatures in the soil during the freezing intervention in order to control the behaviour and the efficacy of the treatment.IntroductionThe Sophia rail tunnel is a bored tunnel with a length of 4.24 km, comprising two separate parallel tubes with an outside diameter of 9.45 m. The twin tunnels were excavated by a TBM equipped with hydroshield. Seven service shafts, approximately 30 m deep, were constructed in between the tunnels. From each shaft two cross passages were constructed connecting the shaft with both tubes, for a total of 14 cross passages.The Artificial Ground Freezing technique utilizing both the Brine and Liquid Nitrogen methods was used for temporary waterproofing and soil support to allow the excavation of the cross passages. The natural soil to be frozen was consisting in loose sand and clay under a hydrostatic pressure up to 250 kPa.For the measurement of the ground temperature. Automatic data acquisition and recording systems were installed to monitor the variation of the temperatures in the soil and at the contact with the tunnel lining. Furthermore, a comprehensive computerized system of sensors and cryogenic valves was designed and implemented in order to manage the whole Nitrogen process.Soil Main CharacteristicsThe soil stratigraphy is generally consisting in Clay (Holocene) from ground level to -15 m depth, followed by Pleistocenic Sand, from -15 to -25 m, and Clay below -25 m."

Recent advances in GPS, machine guidance technology and telemetry allow an unprecedented level of control of surface mining operations. GPS technology can now locate the bucket of a shovel or the blade of a dozer within 50mm (2 inches).Some of the outcomes possible are: precise selective mining – even when the ore is visually indistinguishable from waste: tracking grade and tonnage of every ore parcel through the mine: real time productivity monitoring: detailed post accident safety analysis: tracking the movements of every piece of equipment. This paper will consider the contribution that GPS based machine control systems can make to ensuring that surface mining projects deliver the outcomes promised in the feasibility studies. Case studies of installations are presented.

One of the chief drawbacks to Bendigo mining always has been the difficulty of draining the mines in an equitable manner, so that each company or mine owner bears the properly share. The trouble seems to have been apparent on this field since the diggings were discovered. One mine would push on more expeditiously than its neighbour in looking for the precious metal and sink its shaft, whilst those in the vicinity would simply potter about, and discontinue sinking until gold was struck in the deeper ground, and: then they would go ahead, start sinking, while the pioneer would have to pump all or most of their water. This sort of thing continued here for years until the leases were worked down to the very deep ground and the water became such a b.urden on those companies that had deep shafts, that first one stopped hauiing and then others; with the result that over 1000 feet of water was allowed to accumulate on the New Chum line. lt appeared that if something were not done the whole of the main line of reef in the Bendigo district would be at a standstill, when a scheme was formulated and handed to Mr. Lansell, who, with other gentlemen, took the matter up, and at the present time all the mines on that particular portion of reef are in full work and the water all bailed out.lt is this scheme that I am requested to place before you and also to give you the details of the work done since its adoption.

Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA) can be specifically tailored for use by the commercial explosives industry to calculate risk to employees and the public from commercial explosives facilities and operations. This methodology has several advantages over the American Table of Distances (ATD) which is solely a Quantity Distance (Q/D) analysis. While the ATD has remained essentially the same for 100 years, the safety of commercial explosives in storage has increased immensely. However, the concepts behind QRA calculations are not as intuitive and even at the end of the calculations the values of risk must be compared to something. A few regimes for assessing an acceptable level of risk are discussed in this paper. Risk levels for various United States Federal entities and international agencies are highlighted and suggestions for acceptable risk criteria for individuals and groups are provided. Referencing risk levels from normal daily activities is also done in this paper to make relative the accepted risk criteria. This paper presents some relevant individual risks for everyday activities and some scenarios for group risk for comparison. Individual risk is a straightforward concept however group risk is more complicated. This paper aims to clarify these concepts and provide means to communicate them to the public.

It has been fairly firmly established (Fisher, N. H., 1945) that the fineness of the gold in any ore deposit varies with the depth from the surface at which the deposit was formed, and, as a corollary to this, that it is dependent upon the temperature and pressure at the time of deposition. This relationship is such that, under certain conditions, the gold fineness, taken into consideration with other recognised criteria, furnishes a very sensitive and reliable guide to the relative temperature of ore formation, at least within the epithermal and the upper part of the mesothermal range.Definition of Fineness.The fineness of gold is calculated in parts per thousand and refers to the proportion of gold present in the naturally occurring metal in the lode, which is actually a gold-silver alloy, containing usually about 10 parts per thousand of base metal and up to 500 parts perthousand of silver. A clear distinction should be made between fineness and gold-silver ratio. The latter refers to the total gold and silver in the lode as determined by assay and is usually expressed as the ratio Au:Ag. Only in deposits where other silver-bearingminerals are entirely absent, which occurs comparatively rarely, can the gold-silver ratio be used as a measure of gold fineness and, in many cases, the two have no relationship. For instance, in the Edie Creek area in New Guinea, the lodes formed under shallow epithermal conditions all carry gold 500 to 550 fine, although the gold-silver ratio ranges from 1:100 to 1:1, in places in adjacent lodes.Determination of Gold Fineness.The fineness of lode gold can be determined only after it has been separated from all other minerals. Amalgamation recovers gold fairly cleanly - unless native silver is present - and the fineness of amalgam bullion is generally a reliable indication of the correct fineness of the gold. If the use of plates is involved, the bullion may be adulterated, but the effect of any copper, or other metal, that may have been introduced can be cancelled by assuming that the gold and silver shouJrl add up to about 990 fine, or by ignoring the base metal content altogether, which varies little in naturally-occurring gold, and in calculating for comparison purposes all fineness figures to the basis Au + Ag = 1,000.The composition of bullion obtained from cyanidation is generally intermediate between the true gold fineness and the total gold-silver proportion as determined by assay of mine or mill-head samples of Cyanide solution dissolves other silver-bearing minerals and the fineness of the resulting bullion is thereby lowered. Consequently, the fineness of cyanide bullion rarely corresponds to the true gold fineness and is useless for diagnostic purposes, although it is a common fallacy to refer to the fineness of cyanide bullion as the fineness of the gold.

"OPENING REMARKS Yesterday and today we have heard some very interesting papers on operating matters and some of you are probably wondering what we are now doing talking about Communications in Plant Design. Let me tell you! Before the techniques we have heard being discussed can be used, there has to be a properly operating plant. It is certainly a fact that many mineral processing plants achieve only limited success and a number of them can even be said to be failures. Some of you sitting here are probably living with operating problems that are clue to errors in the design.If the histories of these problem plants are examined, it will be found that in many cases, the necessary skills were available during the period of the plant design. There was extensive operating know¬ledge together with a full range of project expertise. Why then the failures? In a substantial number of cases it can be traced to the old, old problem of communications. As plants get bigger, money costs more and smooth startups become more important, it becomes less and less economic to fix up any design errors during plant operations.During our careers in mineral processing, nearly all of us will be involved in at least one plant design and I feel that it is as well if we understand some of these communication difficulties that can lead to a problem plant. There is little point in us being experts in mineral processing if the knowledge we have acquired doesn't somehow get incorporated into the plant.I would, therefore, like to present this short paper that mentions a few of the significant communication problems that can occur during the design of mining and mineral processing plants, together with some thoughts on answers to these problems."

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Kulumadau deposit represents an intermediate-sulfidation epithermal gold deposit (3.8 Mt at 2.3 g/t, Ag:Au = 1). Mineralisation is primarily confined to hydrothermal breccias within pre-existing fault zones, where it is disseminated throughout a hydrothermal matrix comprising chlorite-quartz-adularia-illite-I/S clays-calcite-pyrite. The host sequence represents numerous mid-Miocene pyroclastic flow eruptions within a tectonically active emergent shallow marine to subaerial depositional setting. Subsequent growth faulting was responsible for debris avalanches, which were subsequently cut by reverse faults. Faults were exploited by hydrothermal fluids, with the heightened porosity at the juncture between faults and debris material facilitating boiling of the ore constituents. Fluid inclusion studies suggest that fluid mixing between meteoric fluids and magmatic fluids, accompanied by boiling, were the primary mechanisms for gold deposition. Recent studies and limited tests indicate favorable results utilizing high accuracy electronic detonator technology over conventional non-electric pyrotechnic systems. This study discusses the application of this technology using the Daveytronic programmable system in an on-going production basis. The study quantifies the performance as it relates to fragmentation, excavation, vibration and productivity in an eastern U.S. aggregate mining operation.

Thermoset polymers, like the polyester, become harder with increasing temperature owing to molecular crosslink formation, which is a thermal benefit for composite matrix applications. Natural lignocellulosic fibers, however, have low thermal resistance and tend to degrade with increasing temperature. Therefore, the combination of a lignocellulosic fiber, as reinforcement, with a thermoset polymer, as the matrix, results in a composite material with complex thermal behavior. In the present work, a thermal analysis was conducted on polyester composites with different amounts of curaua fibers. Both TGA and DTG curves were analyzed to determine the effect of the curaua fiber on the thermal resistance of the composites. It was found that the curaua fiber sensibly affects the thermal behavior of the polyester matrix for fiber amounts above 10% in volume. This effect is associated with an increase in thermal degradation.

This paper evaluates the effectiveness of remotely applied nitrogen-enhanced foam to aid in efforts to isolate and suppress a mine fire. The foam, in combination with a remotely-installed cementitious mine seal and a novel borehole pressure sampling methodology to determine the location of the suspected ignition source, was used to help control ventilation and inert the area surrounding the suspected ignition source by isolating it from oxygen. This allowed mine rescue teams to safely enter the mine, seal the area, and begin recovery operations to successfully return the mine to full production.

Mine sites and construction projects have faced problems with blasting a smooth back wall. This lead to safety concerns with slope stability and rock falls from the walls. Decades ago Dr. Calvin Konya began a special type of blasting called “Precision Presplitting”. This form of presplitting used relatively light loads based on the rock type being blasted. The explosive loads were estimated for each rock type and adjusted as blasting progressed. This current research project also determined a new equation for prediction of the ground vibration from one type of presplitting and compared it to vibration from production blasting.

"A methodology was developed in the mid-1980’s to predict plant performance from standard laboratory flotation tests. The technique is based on a simple, empirical kinetics model, and is tailored for use by the practical metallurgist.To date the performance of more than 20 flotation plants has been predicted, including copper, lead, zinc, phosphate, pyrite, graphite, cassiterite, platinum, nickel and various slags. The method has successfully been used to predict and size four flotation plants directly from bench-scale laboratory flotation testwork. All have since been commissioned, and have performed as predicted.The technique has now received broad acceptance within the South African mining industry, for example in the last year alone it has been used to drive flowsheet development for at least seven new plants. It is also being used to assist in the optimisation of existing operating plants.The methodology is described in this paper and verification of the methodology is presented using case studies of porphyry, polymetallic and PGM operations.INTRODUCTIONThere is considerable interest these days in the use of modelling to simulate flotation circuits, for process design and plant optimisation purposes. Although these models are proving to be useful tools for plant design and optimisation, their complexity can make them cumbersome – expensive to use and difficult for metallurgists to visualise and mentally absorb, without a background in each specific technique. In “SUPASIM” no attempt is made to measure flotation fundamentals, rather to use empirical relationships between laboratory flotation kinetics and plant performance – relationships that hold up well to validation exercises as will be demonstrated later in this paper. Although not designed to be as comprehensive as other models, “SUPASIM” is easily understood by the operating metallurgist and can be quickly and easily applied."

Le concept du forage horizontal a été développé voilà de nombreuses années. Différents types de plate-formes permettant le forage horizontal depuis une cheminée ont été conçus par divers manufacturiers ou opérateurs miniers. Entre autres, on connaît bien la griffe de montage Alimak à laquelle peut être fixée une plat-forme sur laquelle est montée une foreuse. En 1992, Ross-Finlay a développé sa propre plate-forme de forage qui à notre opinion améliore la flexibilité du concept du forage horizontal, en augmente la productivité et en diminue le coût d?ensemble tout en assurant une sécurité accrue des travailleurs. Tel que montré à la figure 1, la plate-forme employée à la Mine Kiena est composée d?un toit de protection contre les chutes d?objets et de deux passerelles de forage de forme carrée. Le toit et les passerelles sont fixées à une structure de 6.5 m de longueur équipée de deux assemblages de rouleaux (non montrés à la figure) permettant de faire glisser l?ensemble sur des rails Alimak. L?angle du toit et des passerelles peut être ajusté pour des cheminées dont le pendage varie de 65 degrés à 85 degrés.

The following paper deals with a method for the" Proximate Analysis" of Chloridized Ores, which are free from arsenic, antimony and lime. When these are present the analysis is rendered far more complicated, and many of the methods which I am about to describe could not be applied. Sufficient scope is therefore offered for discussing the analysis, when these metals are present, in a separate paper, which I hope to contribute at a future date.I am fully aware that this method is far from being perfect. No doubt many, modifications and improvements will suggest themselves to my readers, and I trust that this paper will be the means of giving a certain impetus to the study of Proximate Analysis which at the present time is practically dormant. For the benefit of my readers who are not initiated into the details of ordinary estimations, I have briefly described well known methods, which, however, will be found fully described in most text-books of analysis. Assuming that the ore contains. sulphates and chlorides of soda and magnesia, sulphates, sulphides, chlorides and oxides of copper, lead, iron, zinc, manganese and silver chloride, the analysis would be conducted as follows. The first compounds to estimate are the chlorides and sulphates of soda and magnesia.

Traveling through the moors and valleys of Cornwall, England, one is reminded of the extensive mining activities of the past. Abandoned shafts, remains of granite block wheel houses and engine houses, battered brick stacks, old calciners, overgrown water wheel pits, count house remains, overgrown waste pits, and old portals are gaunt monuments to a once flourishing mining industry. Cornwall is bordered on the north by Devon and occupies the south-western most tip of Great Britain. The Atlantic Ocean borders the promontory; to the north, the mouth of the famous Bristol Channel faces the open sea; and to the south, the English Channel separates the land masses of Great Britain and Europe. This part of England is probably the most extensively mined ground in all of Europe. Such great mines as Dolcoath and Wheel Vor, Consols and South Carodan, Levant and Bottalack, remain legendary in the annals of metal mining in the nineteenth century. Many US mining districts hold close ties with Cornwall, Devon, and Wales through ancestors who emigrated from there to work in US mines in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Their descendants can be found in many major US mining districts, and their terms, expressions, customs, and methods have left an impact on the US mining scene that remains with us today.
