There has been much debate in recent years regarding the number of Geology (Earth Science) graduates produced in Australia. The key variable has commonly been assumed to be the placement of graduates in the mineral and petroleum industries. Although not wishing to deny the importance of this element, we contend that Geoscience studies should be given to a wider variety of graduates. The essence is to make students and future citizens more environmentally aware. INTRODUCTION Geoscience is fundamental to exploration and to the well-being of the minerals industry and hence the Australian economy. The value of mineral primary products exports for the past three years has been: 1895 $15.3 billion 1986 $14.8 billion 1987 $16.3 billion (Data source: B.M.R) The mining industry supplies about 40% of Australia's export earnings. However the overall value of Geoscience to the Australian economy is much greater. At the opening of the ANZAAS conference in Townsville during May 1987, Sir Bruce Watson , Chairman of the Mt. Isa Mines Ltd., made a plea for a national re-examination of the way science is taught in secondary schools. In particular he emphasized the point that the community should be more aware of the importance of Geoscience and the value of the mining industry to Australia.

"For its end of life, Kemess Mine processed its difficult-to-treat hypogene ore from the east pit, which is a lower grade copper and higher pyrite content gold ore. Metallurgical testwork showed that improvement was possible with finer grinding. In July 2010, small grinding media were introduced into the regrind mill resulting to a nearly 50% decrease of the power draw with a finer grind, an increase of 1.1% in the final copper grade, an increase of 1.2% in copper and 2.9% in gold recoveries at the cleaners. The overall recoveries of copper and gold increased by 0.6% and 1.3% respectively.INTRODUCTION Kemess Mine was located at 430 km North West of Prince George in North Central British Colombia. Its production started in May 1998 by Royal Oak Mines and was acquired by Northgate Exploration in 2000. Kemess reached its end of life production with its last of production on March 9th, 2011. The concentrator nominal capacity was 56,000 TPD consisting of a primary gyratory crusher feeding two identical conventional SAB circuits totalizing 35,840 kW available for grinding. Rougher flotation consists of four parallel rows of eight 130 m³ tank cells to produce a concentrate of 2% Cu and 6 gr/t Au which was pumped to a 5 m x 10.8 m regrind ball mill. The regrind installed power was 4,480 kW to generate a final grind of 80% passing 40 microns. This product fed the two stage cleaner flotation circuit, first stage being two parallel rows conventional 17 m³ Denver cells and second stage, two 3.3 m x 11.0 m flotation columns in series, designed and constructed by Kemess, to produce a 22% copper concentrate grade. The cleaner flotation middlings were returned back to the regrind mill (Froehling, Mohns, Roman & Grady, 2005; Froehling, Mohns, Rajwani & Fullam, 2007). The large copper-gold porphyry deposit was composed of 15% of oxidized supergene and leach cap ore and 85% of hypogene ore having three major alteration zones, mainly characterized by their sulphur/sulphide content. Chalcopyrite is the main copper mineral species with minor bornite. Gold was mainly present as free gold or electrum. The first alteration zone consisted of a phyllic alteration characterized by moderate and intense sericite alteration which had the highest mill throughput and twice the mine grade when in contact with the supergene horizon. The second zone consisted of a potassic alteration characterized by more competent groundmass and moderate to intense quartz stockwork which had a slightly lower mill throughput. Finally, a third alteration found beneath and on the east side of the deposit having almost no quartz stockwork and hardened groundmass, sulphide content is two to four times more. This zone had the lower mill throughput with significant drop in the mine average gold and copper grade. Through its mine life, the average life of mine copper head grade was 0.21% Cu and 0.64 gr/t Au. Head grades began to decrease from 2008 to be substantially lower in 2011 as shown in Table 1."

This paper on coarse particle recovery (CPR) summarizes a process to capture coarse particles that are not recoverable by regular flotation. Several porphyry copper operations in the world operate analogous circuits that recover non-floated copper from tailings; however, the case presented here is unique in that extensive underlying test work has allowed the authors to elucidate some fundamental principles behind recovery enhancement. This paper discusses an overview of the flowsheet that is proposed to Minera Escondida Ltda., the nature of copper in the feed to the CPR circuit, and the various unit operations within the recovery circuit.

Rock bolt integrity is a critical issue for the mining industry because of its influence on the safety of mining operations. Guided ultrasonic wave testing of the defects associated with resin-anchored rock bolts was investigated. Axisymmetrical and three-dimensional finite element models were built, one of a partially encapsulated bolt and the other of a bolt with a simulated local corrosion crack. Experimental bolts were then installed in a testing block and typical responses were compared to finite element models of different defect scenarios. Encouraging results were obtained for the smaller axisymmetrical and three-dimensional finite element models, as well as during the experimental investigation. It is recommended that software with energy-absorbing elements should be utilized to consider higher frequencies and longer bolts. Once the integrity of models such as these has been established, the models could in principle be used to train neural networks for use in commercial equipment to determine the integrity of the installed bolt.

Quality control is essential for augered cast-in-place (ACIP) piles (also known as continuous flight auger (CFA) piles outside the United States) and augered displacement (AD) piles since the pile is constructed below the ground surface out of the direct sight of the personnel constructing and inspecting the pile. ACIP piles are being successfully constructed to support high-rise structures, arenas and stadiums, mass transit systems, and power and industrial facilities. The use of AD pile technology is also gaining ground in the United States, typically utilizing proprietary systems such as Omega (currently utilzed by Richard Goettle Inc., and LG Barcus and Sons, Inc.), Berkel, and DeWal (currently utilized by Morris-Shea). Different types of ACIP/AD pile installation equipment are shown in Figures 1 and 2. ACIP piles are installed into granular and cohesive soils, and soft rock to lengths currently approaching 130 ft (39.5 m), with diameters up to 24 to 36 inches (610 to 915 mm), and sustaining design loads approaching 900 kips (4000 kN). Current AD pile installation equipment in the United States is capable of installing up to 79-ft-long (24 m) piles with diameters ranging from 12 to 18 inches (305 mm to 460 mm).

A comprehensive axial test program has been undertaken at the WASM Dynamic Test Facility on the performance of 20mm threadbar. The threadbar tests had a double embedment configuration, with variation to the encapsulation lengths, debonded length and surface hardware and fixtures to examine failure mechanisms. Performance was significantly affected by the collar embedment length and type of fixture nut used. Results ranged from thread shearing occurring between the nut and bar at 1kJ of energy dissipated, to control plastic deformation of a central debonded length dissipating 22kJ.

Uranium bearing copper sulphide flotation concentrates produced from iron oxide copper gold uranium (IOCG–U) ore contains radionuclides such as 238U, 230Th, 210Pb, 226Ra, 210Po, which have the potential to reduce their marketability, thus posing a challenge to the industry. Thus, a two–stage leach process has been proposed in this study. In first stage, a sulphuric acid leach process effectively dissolve most of the 238U and 230Th into solution, but other radionulclides (mainly 210Pb, 226Ra and 210Po) remain associated with copper sulphide minerals owing to their low solubilities in sulphuric acid solution. In the second leaching stage, the use of methanesulfonic acid (MSA, CH3SO3H) is investigated to selectively dissolve the 210Pb, 226Ra and 210Po from the residue of the first stage. The results indicate that 96% of 238U, 87% of 230Th, 90% of 210Pb, 86% of 226Ra and 17% of 210Po are dissolved using 3 mol/L MSA solution at 90°C for 3 hours, which represents a dramatic decrease in the radioactivity of the copper concentrate. INTRODUCTION Australia is host to one of the largest iron oxide copper–gold–uranium (IOCG–U) deposits in the world. Most of the value in these deposits is associated with copper. In mineral processing, the gangue minerals are separated from copper sulphide minerals that report to a copper flotation concentrate. However, due to the strong association of uranium with copper minerals and hematite, even clean copper concentrates can contain significant amounts of uranium (238U) and its radioactive decay elements, of which thorium (230Th), radium (226Ra), lead (210Pb), and polonium (210Po) are the long life radionuclides. These hazardous radionuclides negatively affect the marketability of the copper concentrates. Customer copper smelters in China, Japan and Europe may consider the radionuclides penalty elements or may not be able to process the feed. Therefore, there is a strong motivation to remove radionuclides from copper concentrates at the mine site before shipping to custom smelters in global market. Hydrometallurgical leaching has been widely employed to remove radionuclides from different kinds of minerals such as copper concentrates (Ragozzini & Sparrow, 1987), zircon concentrates (Aral, Sparrow, McDonald, & Norgate, 2007), and coal ash (Lei, Qi, Sun, Xu, & Wang, 2014). Leaching using sulphuric acid (H2SO4) solutions is the most widely used process for the extraction of uranium from uranium ores due to the relatively low cost and wide availability of the acid (Bhargava et al., 2015; Gilligan & Nikoloski, 2015). The leach process involves treating ground ore slurry with sulphuric acid at elevated temperatures (typically 60–90 °C) under oxidising conditions in order to convert the uranium in the minerals 2+ from the relatively insoluble tetravalent form (UO2) into water–soluble hexavalent state (UO2), which then complexes with SO42- and forms UO2(SO4)22- in solution. The uranium oxidation is generally carried out in the presence of ferric ion (Fe3+), regardless of the reagent and oxidant used. The most commonly used oxidants for uranium include sodium chlorate, pyrolusite and oxygen (Ring, 1980). These oxidants act indirectly by converting ferrous sulphate, formed by the oxidation reaction of UO2 in slurries, into ferric sulphate. The presence of Fe–containing gangue minerals such as hematite in the ore usually provides sufficient Fe required for the oxidation of UO2. After sulphuric acid leaching, the locked thorium (230Th), radium (226Ra), lead (210Pb), and polonium (210Po) elements are chemically liberated from hematite and uranium mineral grains (Ciobanu, Wade, Cook, Schmidt Mumm, & Giles, 2013). However, the extraction rate of radium (226Ra), lead (210Pb), and polonium (210Po) in sulphate solution is very low due to the limited solubilities of (Ra, Pb, Po)SO4 (Bagnall & Freeman, 1956; Liu & Papangelakis, 2006; Nikitin & Tolmachev, 1933).

"The Central Mukur deposit was discovered by the Semipalatinsk Geological Exploration Expedition (GEE) during detailed searches from 1977 to 1980. Andas Altyn Ltd., a Kazakhstanian gold mining company acquired the property and commenced mining in 1995. In 1998, Andas-Altyn Ltd. became a wholly owned subsidiary of Eurasia Gold Corporation.The Central Mukur gold project covers a linear series of parallel, discontinuous zones of near surface oxide gold mineralization that covers a distance of 7 kilometers and extends past the property boundaries. The oxide gold mineralization is a result of the regional oxidization of a primary sulfide gold mineralization emplaced in a series of shallow dipping thrust faults. Resources as calculated by the GEE are 3.45 mt at an average grade of 1.84 gmt Au in the C1 +C2 category and 7.52 mt at an average grade of 1.80 gmt Au in the P1 category. The Central Mukur Gold Heap Leach Mine consists of an open pit, heap leach pads, and an ion exchange resin gold recovery plant. Limited gold production (<2,500 ounces/year) has been achieved over the past three years leaching run of mine oxide gold mineralization. Gold recovery utiling cyanide to dissolve the Au and ionic resin technology to recover the Au for the leachate is approximately 60%. Loaded resin is shipped to a treatment plant at Almaty where the gold is stripped from the resin, refined and sold.This paper will describe the geology, mining, and processing of the Central Mukur ore. In addition, it will describe what it is like doing business in Kazakhstan and the transition from a Soviet style operation to a more western style operation.INTRODUCTIONThe Central Mukur Mine is owned and operated by Andas-Altyn Ltd. a Kazakhstanian gold mining company located in northeast Kazakhstan. Andas-Altyn is a wholly owned subsidiary of Eurasia Gold Corp., a Canadian public company listed on the Alberta Stock Exchange. The Central Mukur mine consists of a small open pit, and a heap leach operation that utilizes ion exchange resin to recover gold from pregnant solutions. In addition to the Central Mukur mine, Eurasia also owns the Myaly heap leach gold project which is also operated by Andas- Altyn Ltd."

The paper explores the substance, circumstances and significance of the Whelpley and Storer Copper Process. The 1866 Whelpley and Storer patent specified a process combining mechanical and chemical engineering. The process called for a down-drafting shaft furnace with a horizontal flue connected at the bottom of the shaft. Powdered sulphide ore was roasted in the shaft and then sent forward fully oxidized to a bath of sulphuric acid and/or calcium chloride. The “water furnace” was developed in Boston, at a time when the city was home to most Michigan copper mining companies. The process was field-tested at Quebec’s Harvey Hill copper mine. In 1865 James Douglas, Jr. took over management of the Harvey Hill mine with the challenge of saving the family investment. He needed a way to make money from low-grade sulphides. Through his relationship with chemist T. Sterry Hunt, Douglas learned of a possible way ahead using the process developed by Whelpley and Storer. The paper confirms the centrality of publications, meetings, and networking in the advancement of metallurgy. The process is of interest historically, as much as anything, because it is one of the pillars of James Douglas’ distinguished career in copper. INTRODUCTION At the 1866 meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in Buffalo, New York, T. Sterry Hunt (1826–1892) read a paper “On the Metallurgical System of Messrs. Whelpley and Storer.” The paper is part of a chain of events that constitute the foundation of James Douglas’ (1837–1918) success in the copper mining industry. To understand the career of Douglas over the early years of modern copper mining, we must necessarily start with Whelpley and Storer. Going back to Hunt’s paper, he concluded his remarks by asserting that the Whelpley and Storer Process was “capable of such wide and varied application, that it is probably destined to have a very important influence on the industry of the world” (Hunt, 1867a). He reached this conclusion reasoning that the process had overcome a critical metallurgical hurdle (Hunt, 1867a). Hunt, a geo-chemist in modern terms, recalled that the chemist of those years easily separated copper from “sulphuretted” ores by converting it to a soluble salt from which pure metal was precipitated by “an equivalent of iron.” The problem was to “…apply this principle in the working of copper ores on a great scale...” (Hunt, 1867a). Hunt noted that this very problem had “…engaged the attention of many metallurgists, and has given rise to various processes for obtaining copper by the moist way, many of which are nearly or quite perfect in their operation, but are lacking in practicability and cheapness” (Hunt, 1867a). Hunt thought Whelpley and Storer had overcome the low-grade sulphide hurdle with a commercially viable engineering breakthrough. Yet in the history of copper metallurgy, the process is missing. "Measurements obtained during load testing of two steel H-piles driven at a site in Northeastern Mississippi are discussed. The general site conditions, equipment used, testing procedures and results of the pile load tests are presented. Both piles were tested in compression and one of the piles was subsequently tested in tension. The piles were instrumented with strain gauges and extensometers to measure the mobilized soil resistance and pile movement. Three different “zero strain” conditions were used to determine the mobilized soil resistance and residual loads due to driving or a load cycle. It was concluded that the effect of residual loads on driven piles could be significant. Driving residual loads influenced the magnitude and distribution of the load transfer curves more than those due to a load cycle. Results of the tension test were impacted by the residual loads from the previous compression test performed on the same pile.INTRODUCTIONSeveral factors affect the performance of a deep foundation system including the subsoil conditions, loading settings, pile type and installation method. Residual stresses develop in piles particularly due to pile driving, but they are typically not accounted for in the analysis (Fellenius 2002). Siegel and McGillivray (2009) presented an assessment of residual loads measured during load testing of instrumented auger-cast-in-place (ACIP) piles. The magnitude and distribution of residual stresses along the pile shaft and toe depend on the pile installation method, previous load cycles and time effects. Poulos (1987) reported that residual load due to driving at the pile toe is independent of pile driving equipment and may significantly affect the results of a pile load test. Hunter and Davisson (1969) reported results of pile load tests performed in compression on fully instrumented piles driven in cohesionless soils along with a discussion of the effects of residual loads. Tension loads of about 445 kN (100 kips) were measured at the pile toe after driving. Unloading residual compression load at the toe was detected as “apparent” tension since the instrumentation was zeroed prior to the test. The researchers suggested a graphical approach to obtain the “corrected” load distribution curves considering that residual load will dissipate following the tension test. Holloway et al. (1975) conducted a study on the effect of residual stresses due to pile driving and developed a computer software that accounts for residual loads. Briaud and Tucker (1984) suggested a method to account for residual loads based on the results of 33 pile load tests performed in mostly cohesionless soils."

It is predicted that vast volumes of affected mine water will be produced by mining activities in the Mpumalanga coalfields of South Africa. The potential environmental impact of this excess water is of great concern in a water-scarce country like South Africa. Research over a period of more than 10 years has shown that this water can be used successfully for the irrigation of a range of crops (Annandale et al., 2002)1. There is, however, continuing concern from the local regulators regarding the long-term impact that large-scale mine water irrigation may have on groundwater quality and quantity. Detailed research has been undertaken over the last three years to supplement the groundwater monitoring programme at five different pilot sites, on both virgin soils (greenfields) and in coalmining spoils. These sites range from sandy soils to very clayey soils. The research has included soil moisture measurements, collection of in situ soil moisture over time, long-term laboratory studies of the leaching and attenuation properties of different soils and the impact of irrigation on acid rock drainage processes, and in depth determination of the hydraulic properties of the subsurface at each of these sites, including falling head tests, pumping tests and point dilution tests. This has been supported by geochemical modelling of these processes to quantify the impacts. The results indicate that many of the soils have considerable attenuation capacities and that in the period of irrigation, a large proportion of the salts have been contained in the upper portions of the unsaturated zones below each irrigation pivot. The volumes and quality of water leaching through to the aquifers have been quantified at each site. From this mixing ratios have been calculated in order to determine the effect of the irrigation water on the underlying aquifers. Keywords: coalmines, irrigation, gypsiferous mine water.

The Stawell Goldfield, the westernmost of the main Victorian fields, has produced over a million and a quarter ounces of gold from one and three-quarter million tons of ore. The lodes are quartz reefs and sulphide bodies occurring in sediments of lower Ordovician or upper Cambrian age. The lodes are confined to a relatively narrow suite of weak rocks lying between stronger ones above and below and there is a definite relationship between fold structure, pitch and strength of folding and ore.LOCATION HISTORY AND PAST PRODUCTIONThe town of Stawell, situated 150 miles north-westerly from Melbourne on the main railway and road to Adelaide, is the most westerly of the main gold areas of Victoria. Alluvial gold was found at Pleasant Creek (now Stawell West) in 1853 and the usual &quot;rush&quot; followed. Numerous alluvial leads, some surface, others buried under up to 100 ft. of Tertiary sediments were worked. The alluvial gold was soon exhausted, but in 1857 gold-bearing reefs were found on the slopes of a prominent ridge on the northern edgeof the present town. Early reef mining was by small working parties mining to shallow depths only and treating their ore at public crushing plants. Some of the early returns were very high grade. The next stage was the amalgamation of claims and the formation of companies, with their own treatment plants. This stage continued till the last mine closed in 1921. These companies had, by present standards, small holdings and far too many shafts were sunk, resulting in less efficient prospecting and operation.Since 1921 there have been one or two small scale attempts to revive mining but without success. Project cost control procedures and computer systems have enjoyed a successful and simple relationship over the past decade, thanks primarily to the proliferation of portable computers or PC&apos;s. Prior to the introduction of this technology, project control was largely a manual and somewhat onerous task of historical data compilations, with little time available for dynamic forecasting, staged planning, or pre-emptive cost control. Automated systems developed during this era were resident on "Heavy Iron" or mainframe computers and were expensive to maintain and operate. Use of these early systems was limited to large engineering, construction, and industrial concerns with the economies of scale and funding required for their successful application. Systems were either designed for critical path analysis or task scheduling, but rarely integrated with the other, much less cost control.

Taking the third meridian as the eastern boundary of proved payable auriferous country, there is a stretch of country, nearly 600 miles in width, in which no appreciable amount of gold has yet been discovered. Many prospectors have attempted to .penetrate or traverse it, but comparatively few have thought it worth while proceeding with the examination.The desolate stretch of waterless desert-the very few and insignificant outcrops through the sand and the almost total absence of feed for horses have, combined, presented such a barrier as to preclude prospecting. The few who have traversed the country are eloquent in denunciation, yet their investigations, necessarily hurried, are not quite satisfactory. The absence of water utterly debars a thorough examination being made. Gold may exist in quantity, yet it would have to be extraordinarily plentiful to render its obtaining profitable. Too fantastic is the idea of its ever being a mining district; shifting sand to traverse, utter absence of wood and water render the notion absurd. Likely looking belts occur, but these in all &quot;cases are small and remote from water. Gold has been obtained from likely look ing quartz reefs, but only by fire assay, and then but a few do to the ton. Without wishing to be pessimistic, I would unhesitatingly declare that east of the third meridian, and between the parallels 25 and 30 degrees in West Australia, there is no gold in payable quantities.

Circulating Air Classification of Manufactured Sand Due to environmental concerns, the supply and use of natural gravel has been limited by the Swedish government. The Swedish concrete industry is therefore examining manufactured sand as an alternative that has equal or better product quality, and which the Swedish quarry industry already has the ability to deliver. However, in order to comply with the specifications set by the concrete industry, a better means of classification is needed, as the proportion of fine particles (filler) smaller than 63&nbsp;-&nbsp;125 ¦m in size must be reduced. One classification technology that meets the requirements may be air classification. This paper examines the process of circulating air classification, which is not yet commonly used in the Swedish quarry industry; suggesting that a better understanding of the process is needed. The circulating air classifier in this study has two internal machine parameters that can affect the separation point; namely, the speeds of the circulating fan and the separator fan. We study their effect on the separation point as well as the interaction between these parameters. Full-scale parameter tests are also conducted, in which size distribution is measured before and after the circulating air classification. This study shows how the different parameters affect the separation point and that it is possible to produce manufactured sand according to specifications. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD, Fluent) is used to study the internal flow of the air circulating within the classifier. A single-phase study of the flow field is conducted to support and explain the findings from the full-scale tests.

Effective solids suspension is a necessary precondition for particle collection, and solids suspension is largely dependent on the hydrodynamics of the flotation cell. This study attempted to correlate the status of the suspension of apatite particles of different sizes in a Denver laboratory flotation cell versus the impeller rotational speed (N) adopted to operate the machine. The latter variable (N) influences the impeller capacity to lift the particles from the bottom of the tank and also to disperse them throughout the volume of the vessel. Such an impeller capacity can be characterized by the critical impeller speed for the accomplishment of solids off-bottom suspension (Nz) and also by the velocity of the radial water flow discharged by the impeller (U) divided by the particle terminal settling velocity (Us). This way, the status of the suspension of apatite particles inside the flotation cell can be characterized by one of three categories: ?segregation? (N/N2 < 0.60 and Us/U > 0.08); ?suspension? (0.60 = N/N2 < 1 and 0.06 < Us/U < 0.10); and ?dragging? (N/N2 = 1 and Us/U = 0.03). The range of impeller rotational speed (N), which was able to suspend the finest particles (Dp = 90 µm), was unable to suspend the coarsest particles (Dp = 254 µm). Conversely, the high value of N (N > 1,300 rpm), which is adequate to suspend the coarsest particles, may promote the entrainment of the finest particles to the froth layer.

It is unlikely, as In the past, improvement in truck efficiency and capacity can fully offset the effects of inflation, fuel costs/shortages and ever increasing haul distances. There-fore, investigations of haulage systems less sensitive to these problems are warranted. Thus, this U.S.B.M. contract research study on alternative continuous haulage systems was prepared. This study identifies the physical, economic and technological parameters in the application of continuous haulage systems with special attention to under pit slope conveyors and skip hoisting systems. The evaluation data was gathered from extensive literature searches. European/North American mine visits, and industry comments. The study concludes that continuous underground haulage is a viable method within the proper geometric configuration.

"Three models to predict the effect of bubble size (Db) on metallurgical response were tested in a pilot-scale flotation column at Teck Highland Valley Copper mine. The column was fed with slurry collected from the Cu/Mo separation circuit. The first model was the one developed by Gorain et al. (1997), which assumes that the collection zone rate constant (kc) is inversely proportional to Db. The second model was the one proposed by Hernandez-Aguilar et al. (2010), which considers kc as an inverse square function of Db. The third model was the one developed by Yoon and Luttrell (1989) which provides expressions to describe the efficiency of particle collection (E) based on first principles. The results showed a significant bias between experimental and predicted data using the model of Gorain et al. (1997), possibly reflecting the model’s inability to explain the impact of bubble size, bubble rise velocity and flow regime on E. The model of Hernandez-Aguilar et al. (2010) well described the experimental evidence. The model of Yoon and Luttrell gave accurate and unbiased predictions. However, Yoon and Luttrell’s approach calls for a criterion to determine whether the flow regime is potential or intermediate, a subject that requires more fundamental research.INTRODUCTIONParticle collection, i.e., bubble-particle collision followed by attachment, is the basis of flotation. In a quiescent environment (such as the one observed in a column, or away from the impeller in a mechanical cell), a collision event can take place as long as the “degree of turbulence” caused by the rising bubble does not prevent particle and bubble to flow in close proximity. Upon collision, the particle slides on the bubble surface for a period of time. If the particle is hydrophobic, attachment occurs when the “sliding time” is longer than the “induction time”, which is the time required to thin and rupture the intervening liquid (usually water) film forming a three-phase contact angle. While the induction time is largely influenced by the degree of hydrophobicity of the particle, the degree of turbulence is governed by the bubble size. Generally, direct control of bubble size is not exercised by most mineral processing practitioners, in spite of its obvious importance. Studies to model the effect of bubble size on particle collection using fundamental approaches have been conducted (e.g., Anfruns and Kitchener, 1977; Webber and Paddock, 1983; Yoon and Luttrell, 1989; Dai et al., 1999). However, these models have been validated under highly idealized laboratory conditions (micro-scale experiments using single minerals and uni-sized bubbles), far from resembling those existing in practical industrial applications. Fundamental studies to interpret the effect of bubble size on particle collection in industrial environments are largely absent in the literature. Partly because of this lack of practical knowledge, many mineral processing practitioners perceive laboratory “bubble size” studies to be valuable academic exercises, but not something that can be directly applied to daily production issues."

As a result of the increased depth of mining in the South African gold mining industry mining induced seismicity is a severe problem. One of the strategies within the industry to contain the problem is to incorporate a system of regularly spaced stabilising pillars into mine layouts. At the Driefontein Gold Mine a system of closely spaced dip pillars is used to contain seismic energy emissions. Comparisons of seismic data for several mining clusters initially indicated a possible measure of success in the containment and occurrence of larger events. A detailed analysis of data over a 5-year period since the start of mining however, has revealed a delayed seismic response to the increasing strike spans. Significant changes marked by an increase in certain seismic variables have been observed at mining spans of between 100 to 120 meters and could be of significance to pillar spacing in the design of deep level mining layouts. La sismicité occasionnée par l’exploitation minière est un problème grave dans les mines profondes de l’industrie minière aurifère en Afrique du Sud. Une des stratégies utilisées dans l’industrie a été de maîtriser le problème en incorporant un système de piliers de stabilisation régulièrement espacés dans la disposition des mines. A la Driefontein Gold Mine, un système de piliers de pendage proches les uns des autres est utilisé pour contenir les émissions d’énergie sismique. Au début, des comparaisons de donnés sismiques pour plusieurs groupes d’extraction ont indiqué un succès possible dans la limitation et l’occurrence d’évènements sismiques. Cependant, une analyse détaillée des données sur une période de 5 années a révélé un délai entre la progression de l’extraction et une réponse sismique accrue. Es war eine der Strategien innerhalb der Industrie, das Problem dadurch einzudämmen, daß regelmäßig plazierte Stabilisierungspfeiler in den Bergbaulayouts inkorporiert wurden. In der Driefontein Gold Mine wird ein System von knapp aneinandergesetzten im Abfallbereich befindliche Pfeiler benutzt, um seismische Energieemissionen einzudämmen. Vergleiche der seismischen Daten für mehrere Bergbaugruppen zeigten anfangs ein mögliches Maß von Erfolg in der Eindämmung und im Auftreten von größeren Fällen an. Eine ausführliche Analyse von Daten über einen 5jährigen Zeitraum hat jedoch ergeben, daß eine Verzögerung zwischen der Progression des Bergbaus und einer erhöhten seismischen Reaktion besteht. Bedeutende Änderungen in den seismischen Variablen wurden an Bergbauspannen von 100 bis 120 Metern beobachtet und könnten für Abstandsbemessung von Pfeilern im Design des Tiefbergbaulayouts von Bedeutung sein.

"Quality control of drilled shafts and CFA piles is greatly dependent upon the practices of the site personnel. In many applications it is difficult or not possible to fully inspect the shaft prior to concreting, such as when the shaft is drilled under slurry. CFA piles are cast with no ability to inspect the shaft prior to concreting. There are numerous methods currently available to assess the integrity of drilled shafts and CFA piles. This paper will compare evaluations by three existing non-destructive test (NDT) methods with a new method of Thermal Integrity Profiling for assessing integrity in drilled shafts and CFA piles. This Thermal Integrity Profiling method determines the integrity over 100% of the shaft cross section, both inside and outside the reinforcing cage, by measuring the hydration temperature of the concrete along the length of the shaft. These temperature measurements are made typically only 12 to 48 hours after concrete placement, thus accelerating the construction process. Thermal Integrity Profiling will be described in detail and the Thermal Integrity Profile (TIP) results from several shafts with purpose built defects will be discussed along with several case histories from drilled shafts and CFA piles where Thermal Integrity Profiling was used. The case histories will compare TIP with various other NDT tests utilized on these particular piles including comparisons with Low Strain Integrity Testing and Cross Hole Sonic Logging. Test results for the various methods will be discussed and the excavation of the upper portion of one drilled shaft will be shown and discussed. IntroductionDrilled shafts can be a desirable foundation element in many applications due to the large axial and lateral capacities which are attainable for very large drilled shafts. Drilled shafts can be cast in a dry hole which allows for inspection of the hole prior to casting, but the casting process is very difficult to nearly impossible to inspect with any accuracy. Drilled shafts are frequently cast under slurry as a means to stabilize the surrounding soils during the construction process. When casting a drilled shaft under slurry, it is very difficult to accurately inspect the hole prior to casting and it is equally difficult to inspect the shaft during the casting process. CFA piles are another popular choice for their relative ease and speed of installation. The trend has been larger CFA piles carrying greater loads, which makes quality control critical for these piles. Many of the above mentioned processes are blind to inspection and therefore the chances increase for having defects present in the completed elements."
