Historically, boulders are a frequent source of problems in soft ground tunneling. During tunnel construction, the need to manually break and remove boulders as obstructions causes delays to the project. Repairs to a tunnel boring machine (TBM) can also be a source of delays. Managing these problems is difficult since normal soil investigation techniques do not accurately predict the presence or frequency of boulders. This has lead to considerable number of claims for extra costs and delays during the construction of soft ground tunneling projects. These issues are exacerbated in pressurized face tunneling systems where there is limited access to the TBM cutterhead for obstruction removal and/or cutterhead maintenance. The project team that built the Big Walnut Augmentation/Rickenbacker Interceptor (BWARI) Project for the City of Columbus successfully managed the design and construction of a 4,267 mm (14 ft) diameter soft ground tunnel with high boulder concentrations in a complex geologic setting. The management of the boulder issue tookplace during several phases of the project.

With construction underway on the 22.5 km (14 mile) Initial Segment of the Link Light Rail transit system in Seattle (including the one-mile EPB-driven running tunnels and mined station at Beacon Hill), the Sound Transit Board on May 20, 2004 voted on selection of a preferred route for an approximately eight-mile extension northwards from the central business district to Northgate, and authorized immediate start of advanced conceptual/preliminary engineering and geotechnical exploration programs scheduled to be completed in Spring 2005. The extension includes approximately914 m (30,000) route-feet of bored running tunnels, a mined station with platform level approximately 60 m (200 ft) below grade, three (possibly four) cut-and-cover stations and a cut-and-cover cross-over structure, as well as an aerial terminal station at Northgate and other line-section below-grade and aerial structures. All tunneling will be in glacial soils.

Underground coal mining has been active within the East Mountain property since the mid 1950's. As a result, coal from two seams has been extracted within large areas allowing surface subsidence to occur. Monitoring of subsidence annually, began in 1981 using on the ground conventional monumentation, surveying and photogrammetric monitoring. The data collected has shown the time benefits of photogrammetry and the relationship between observed subsidence and the geometry of the mined out area below.

This report is a comprehensive summary of the results of the propagation measurements program conducted for the US Bureau of Mines under Contract H0366028. Data was gathered in the MF frequency range from a cross sample of six mines representative of the industry having typical wireless requirements. From the raw data which was gathered, a logical method of data reduction is presented which culminates in a set of average attenuation characteristics for all mines visited. These characteristics define a typical MF wireless system when the communication range requirements are known. Direct through-the-earth propagation and the range enhancement mechanism due to coupling on and off conductors are evaluated and related to the planning of a typical wireless MF communications system.

The purpose of this research is to identify hazards associated with roof bolting and to make recommendations for procedural and equipment design changes to reduce those hazards. To that end, the project reviewed Literature on related research, collected and analyzed roof bolting injury data, normalized the injury data be exposure time to each activity and identified problem areas within the root bolting tasks. In addition, field data collection forms were prepared and mines selected for field work. In the field, observations were made of eighty (80) different roof bolting crews bolting one hundred fifty-five (155) place;, on forty (40) sections spread among nine (9) mines. Task analysis forms were used to record unsafe behavior or conditions for each crew and each place. Informal discussions were held with the mine's safety and training officer, the maintenance officer, one section foremen and, when possible, the observed crew, concerning the training and experience of the miners. Unsafe acts were categorized and related to the "Activity While Injured" categories developed during the accident analysis. For each of these categories one or more recommendations for corrective measure, machine modification, procedural change or job training were developed. The study produced over fifty (50) specific recommendations involving machine design, procedural, safety training and supervisional issues that would lead to reduced roof bolter injuries in the near term. The authors concluded, however, that only the development of truly hands off/remote bolting can eliminate or reduce to an absolute minimum the hazards to which the roof bolter is subjected.

The Liaoning Dahuofang Reservoir Water Transfer Project is an important development for the Department of Water Resources of Liaoning Province in northeastern China. The 85.3 km water conduit will transport water from the Hun River downstream of the Huanren Reservoir to the outlet on the Suzi River leading to the Dahuofang Reservoir. The additional water is required to sustain the growing cities of Fushun, Shen-yang, Liaoyang, Anshan, Panjin and Yingkou. The project is divided into seven contracts. Three TBM contracts comprise almost 75% of the work and the others are drill and shoot. The focus of this paper is about the creditable TBM performances achieved and some of the problems encountered by Chinese contractors; notably two having had no previous TBM experience.

Ghomroud water conveyance tunnel project is under construction using shield Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) for a total length in excess of 50 km. Phase 1 of the project included 36 km of tunnel divided into four lots (1, 2, 3, and 4) of nine km each. Lots 3 and 4 of this tunnel for a total length of 18 km were combined into one award and have been constructed using a double shield (DS) TBM or one path system. Extreme ground convergence in some sections of the tunnel has stalled TBM performance in early reaches, due to face collapse and shield jammings. This paper presents the latest update on the tunnel progress and impact of ground convergence on machine performance based on the information obtained from field observations. Also, the method and results of tunnel convergence measurements were studied in conjunction with geological parameters and an attempt was made to correlate TBM operational parameters and ground convergence. The result of the analysis indicates a good correlation between machine?s operational parameter and tunnel convergence and can be used as an indicator of the potential for high rates of convergence. An early warning on ground convergence is essential for taking precautionary measures to avoid TBM jamming and related long delays and costs.

PURPOSE OF THE PROJECT The Big Walnut Augmentation Rickenbacker Interceptor project began in 1995with the preparation of the Scope of Services for the design of the Rickenbacker Interceptor, with service to and around the Rickenbacker Air Force base. The air base was soon to be placed under civilian control through a Port Authority, with an expected influx of businesses and services, requiring increased sanitary service capability. Due to political differences regarding annexation and other issues, the project was placed on hold. In mid 1996 the Scope of Services was rewritten with more emphasis on a tunneling option, but still only addressing the air base and surrounding tributary are a sanitary service requirements. The consultant selection process began in late 1996 with the Request for Statements of Qualifications issued in December. Three firms were selected to furnish proposals based on the revised Scope of Services that now included requirements for hydraulic modeling of the service areas and the Big Walnut Outfall (BWO) and an expanded soil investigation requirement. All three firms were requested to make presentations to the selection committee, with the committee selecting URS Greiner for further consideration and negotiation. A contract was entered into in August of 1997with URS Greiner. The major sub-consultants were Lachel and Associates, Inc., H.R.Gray and Associates and Solar Testing Laboratories, Inc. The project began with geological investigations, preliminary soil borings, well investigations, tributary area evaluations, hydraulic modeling of the BWO system and research into other projects planned for the Rickenbacker airport and surrounding area. The hydraulic modeling of the BWO and the proposed Rickenbacker Interceptor confirmed that the BWO suffered wet weather surcharging and would require augmentation to properly convey the future flows to the Southerly Wastewater Treatment Plant(SWWTP). The project scope expanded to include evaluation of both the Rickenbacker Interceptor and the Big Walnut Augmentation projects. Both projects previously identified in the Capital Improvements Program. The work on the expanded scope for the Big Walnut Augmentation and the Rickenbacker Interceptor began with the evaluation of a parallel 2.75 meter (108") diameter augmentation sewer from SWWTP to S.R. 317and Parsons Avenue, then continuing east along S.R. 317 as the Rickenbacker Interceptor. IN the middle of the eighteenth century John Frazier and wife, Sarah Ingraham, removed from Boston, Mass., to Philadelphia, Pa., where he was held in such esteem that we find him one of the Committee which arranged the ball at Washington's inauguration. Their son John. Nalbro Frazier, was prosperous in his mercantile career and fortunate in his wife, .Anne West; who was an important personage in the early life of Professor Frazier. This cultured lady brought into the family an atmosphere of religious enthusiasm, of thoroughness and: of unity of purpose. Her son, Benjamin West Frazier, inherited her traits and displayed them during a. short and active life. Like his father, he engaged in mercantile pursuits, and was a member of the firm of Zimmerman, Frazier & Co. In their interests he lived for a short- time in Montevideo, and on his return married Isabella Zimmerman, a daughter of the head of the firm. Their happy married life was cut short by the death of Mrs. Frazier shortly after the birth of the subject of this sketch which, occurred October 3, 1841. Mr. Frazier did not long survive her, and left his orphaned sons to, the care of his mother, from whom he had inherited a lovable and deeply religious nature, an : artistic temperament and a capacity for thorough work. Whatever of these traits fell by inheritance to these children were strengthened by the influence of their grandmother, and. the purity of mind, the delicacy of sentiment, the refinement of honor, which characterized. Professor Frazier, are due to Anne West Frazier, and are generally present in the characters of all of gentle blood who have been under the sole and immediate influence of a mature and refined woman. The first Report of Investigations of the present series (No. 4562) was on the fundamental properties of lead compounds, and the manner in which they set limits to the richness of lead products treated in the usual sintering-blast furnace units. These properties of the compounds were emphasized, as' it was desired, also, to learn the limitations of smelting the same compounds in present ore hearth practice; the hearth has a competitor in these "usual" units, even with the rich lead feeds best adapted for the hearths. Operating conditions that were followed in older metallurgical processes, when rich products, were treated, were outlined. The second report of the series (R. I. 4563) was on the development of the ore hearths of the types now used in the Tri-State from the viewpoint of the features, functions, and dimensions of the earlier hearths that had been most changed. Experimental data, for both well and poorly desulfurized charges being considered, were given to show the relative changes in the sizes and compositions of the charges after they were added to the ore (Scotch) hearths. A general picture was given of the charge column and of the conditions prevailing there when the operation was satisfactory. In this third paper, the composition of the gases prevailing in the charge column at various elevations will be correlated with what has been learned of the nature of the charge column in order to trace the steps of operation by which lead sulfide is converted into metallic lead. The metallurgical factors that govern operation and the lines along which improvements may be made will be noted.

Methods for the direct spectrochemical determination of impurities at the parts-per-million level in tungsten metal and oxide are presented. Several published procedures were investigated and numerous modifications were made in establishing procedures with improved precision and extended lower levels of determinability. Details of standards preparation are presented, experimental work is described, and three preferred methods are described in detail. A germanium carrier-distillation procedure is applicable to the determination of 13 elements in tungsten powder; a silver chloride carrier-distillation procedure provides for the determination of 24 elements in tungstic oxide, and a sustaining ac arc method is applicable to 26 elements in tungstic oxide. The choice of methods to be used depends upon sample form, elements and concentrations to be determined, and the precision and accuracy required. The investigations reported here were undertaken to develop direct spec-trochemical methods with increased accuracy and precision to determine impurities in high-purity tungsten and tungstic oxide, to define the lower concentration levels of detectability and measurement for the common impurities in tungsten by direct spectrographic means, and to present the details of the developed or modified methods that have proved applicable.

Titanium nitride in upgraded nitrided ilmenite (bulk of iron removed) can selectively be chlorinated to produce titanium tetrachloride. Except for iron, most other components present during this low temperature (ca. 200°C) chlorination reaction will not react with chlorine. It is therefore necessary to remove as much iron as possible from the nitrided ilmenite. Hydrochloric acid leaching is a possible process route to remove metallic iron from nitrided ilmenite without excessive dissolution of species like titanium nitride and calcium oxide. Calcium oxide dissolution results in unrecoverable acid consumption. The leachability of nitrided ilmenite in hydrochloric acid was evaluated by determining the dissolution of species like aluminium, calcium, titanium and magnesium in a batch leach reactor for 60 minutes at 90°C under reflux conditions. The hydrochloric acid concentration (11%, 18% and 25%), initial acid-to-iron mole ratio (2:1, 2.5:1 and 3.3:1), and solid-to-liquid mass ratio (1:8.33 to 1:2.13) were varied. The results indicate that a hydrochloric acid concentration of 25 wt% supplied in a 2:1 acid-to-iron mole ratio would produce the most favourable upgraded nitrided ilmenite product. The dissolution of iron in this solution reached 97 per cent after only 60 minutes. The total dissolution of calcium and titanium species was 0.01 and 0.11 wt% respectively. Hydrochloric acid can therefore be used as lixiviant to remove metallic iron from nitrided ilmenite. [Zr(C9H6NO)4]?(HCON(CH3)2)?(H2O), where (C9H6NO) = 8-hydroxy quinoline (oxH), was synthesized and characterized. This tetrakis-coordinated zirconium complex crystallized in the triclinic crystal system (Pi, Z=2) along with water and N,N?-dimethylformamide(DMF) solvate in the asymmetric unit. The metal atom is surrounded by four N,O-donating bidentate ox-ligands that are arranged around the metal centre to give a square antiprismatic coordination polyhedron with a small distortion towards a dodecahedral geometry. Crystal packing is stabilized by intermolecular interactions of adjacent oxine ring systems in neighbouring molecules, as well as hydrogen bonding of the aqua and DMF solvate molecules, linking the molecular entities into a supramolecular three-dimensional network.

Microseismic monitoring and evaluation is one aspect of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) research program. Roof falls are often preceded by a period of elevated microseismic activity, but not all periods of elevated activity result in a roof fall, nor do all roof falls occur after some amount of elevated activity. The objective of this study is to review periods of elevated microseismic activity and determine whether fracture activity rate can be used to anticipate the initiation of roof falls. The study was carried out at an underground limestone mine where major roof falls are associated with excessive horizontal stress. The progression of roof falls was detected by the microseismic signature produced by the rock falling from the mine roof onto the mine floor, which is termed a roof fall impact event. A total of nine elevated fracture activity periods that resulted in seven major roof falls were examined. It was observed that elevated fracture activity preceded the initial roof fall impact event in three out of four major roof falls. The initial impact event was not identified for the remaining three roof falls. Fracture event rates were analyzed and a roof fall alarm trigger of five fracture events in a ten minute time period was established for this test case. The fall alarm trigger was tested against six of the elevated activity periods. Four roof falls occurred in the six periods of elevated activity, and two would have triggered the alarm before the roof fall occurred, while two false alarms were generated. The results show that limited success would have been achieved by the microseismic system as a roof fall alarm trigger. However, the trigger would have been successful at warning of the onset of elevated activity, allowing mine employees to respond appropriately. The study highlighted some issues with implementing such a system in an operating mine, including the need for real time identification of fracture related microseismic signals among mining induced signals, and accurate location and identification of fracture clustering.

INTRODUCTION East Side Access (ESA) Contract CQ028 is located in the New York City Borough of Queens. The contract involves construction of a 230-meter (760-foot) long open-cut excavation with a permanent deck supporting Amtrak yard tracks over a semi-circular TBM launch wall on the east end, and the 36.5-meter (120-foot) long Northern Blvd. Crossing on the west end. The Northern Boulevard Crossing will be mined under an existing New York City Transit (NYCT) five-track subway tunnel; Northern Boulevard, a heavily traveled five-lane truck route; and an existing NYCT three-track elevated line; connecting to an existing open-cut shaft adjacent to the existing 63rd Street Tunnel bellmouth. When completed, Contract CQ028 will provide access for future Manhattan and Queens tunnel contracts. The footprint of the open-cut was determined by the geometric requirements of the future Plaza Interlocking facility to be constructed within in another future ESA contract. See Figure 1. This paper discusses design risk mitigations for the key elements of the contract, namely the Northern Blvd. Crossing and the semi-circular TBM Launch Wall. PROJECT OVERVIEW The Metropolitan Transportation Authority Capital Construction Company—East Side Access Project for the Long Island Rail Road will provide Long Island commuters with direct access to Manhattan’s East Side via a new rail line between the Harold Interlocking in Queens and Grand Central Terminal in Manhattan. The project connects the unused lower level of the existing tunnel under the East River at 63rd Street to new connecting tunnels in Queens and Manhattan. Polkowice region (Lower Silesia, Poland) is an area, where the copper mining activity started about 40 years ago and new technologies were applied. There are 3 underground mines, 3 processing plants, tailings pond (the biggest one in Europe), pipelines for flotation waste transport, railways. Although new technologies were applied during the copper ore exploitation, the environment in this area were polluted mostly by dust containing copper, lead, zinc and arsenic. Estimated values of heavy metals in polluted soils were compared to the natural contents of this metals. The geochemical background for Polkowice area was defined. The pollution zones occur around mining facilities. Copper ore exploitation and processing is planned for the next 20-40 years depending on market situation. After mines and other facilities closing the most important problem will be sustainable development of this area. To evaluate the scope of revitalization activities the analysis of recent soil environment condition will be necessary as well as forecasts for pollution migration. Geostatistic methods used also in mining will be very helpful for this task.

The opportunity to evaluate the pile design procedures used on a major project is an infrequent occurrence. It is even more infrequent that the project involves piles with significant tension and horizontal capacities. This report synopsizes over twenty years of design and construction experience on just such a major pile founded structure. The philosophy governing foundation design procedures is described and discussed. The order and extent of full scale pile testing are evaluated. Principal points in the specifications are established and their effect on construction progress and claims are noted. The report concludes with recommendations for future projects.

Spin-fin pipe piles can develop large loads in tension, thus have evolved as a foundation product of great potential. Currently, over 500 spin-fin piles have been used successfully in dolphins, docks, buildings and bulkheads. Spin-fin piles are pipe piles with plates welded near the tip at a batter-in-screw fashion. Thus, as the pile is driven, the pile screws into position. Tests show this pile type to have highly unusual stress/strain relationships, wherein plunging failure is usually never reached either at normal or large deformations. Tension capacity can approach pile capacity in bearing; thus, large reserves are usually available for tension. Tests have been performed on 8-5/8-inch to 24-inch-diameter piles in silt, sand, and gravelly soil, to provide a broad spectrum of data.

The immediate roof at the test site consisted of laminated clay shale that is likely to be susceptible to weathering. With seasonal dry-wet cycles in the mine ventilation air, the roof in the intake air would deteriorate and lose integrity over time. In many instances, the weathering-prone roof would gradually scale off piece by piece between bolts and over the entry corners. In some long-term entries, roof weathering could develop up to 2-3 ft deep with columns of bolted roof hanging under the upper intact roof. If wire mesh is used, the roof bags down and reduces the entry height, and the weight of the bagged roof tends to pull the bolts out and poses a safety hazard. An effective measure is always sought to support this type of weak roof that is sensitive to moisture degradation. One solution is to seal the roof shortly after entry development to prevent moisture penetration so that roof integrity can be maintained for the long term. In this application, a polymer-based sealing material was tested in the Rockspring mine for weathering protection and reinforcement. The material is a one-component polymer powder for spray application onto the roof and rib. The sealant material is mixed with water in the spraying nozzle to apply to the roof and rib as a paste. The product sets within 5-10 minutes and forms a membrane as thin as about 1/8-in. The membrane will quickly develop tensile and bonding strength within minutes and completely cure within a few days. Through sealing, bonding and lateral reinforcement, the integrity of the weak roof can be maintained. The material has been tried in a long-term evaluation over several months in a set of main entries in the Rockspring mine owned and operated by Rockspring Development, Inc., affiliate of Foundation Coal. Preliminary evaluation has shown that the material is an effective and economical solution to ensuring the long-term stability of weathering-prone roof.

Geoscan is used for multi-elemental analysis of conveyed bulk materials in real time. It has been used for coal analysis since the 1990s, in the cement industry, and since 2003 for measuring mineral ore quality. Geoscan-M has proven performance and demonstrated paybacks of weeks or months, in iron ore, manganese, copper, zinc-lead and phosphate industries. Geoscan-M measures continuously through the full bed depth and is unaffected by belt speed, particle size, layering and dust levels. Increments of two minutes (typically one to five minutes) are accurately measured and provide the plant operators with tonnage weighted results of each element within seconds.A Geoscan installed after crushing is able to measure quality shortly after mining. The analysis results can be used to divert the increments based on composition, such as diverting waste for disposal and diverting marginal material to a stockpile for processing at a later date. The bulk sorting process allows different qualities to be placed into relevant stockpiles for subsequent blending. Material meeting product DSO (Direct Shipping Ore) quality can bypass a beneficiation circuit to prevent unnecessary treatment costs. An analyser in a blending application enables proportioning of different quality feed materials from multiple stockpiles to achieve a desired compositional consistency for process feed. The parameter used for decisions may be; a) primary metal content, e.g. Cu, Fe, P, etc. b) deleterious component content, e.g. Mg as an indicator of talc content, c) process parameter content, or a combination of these. Process parameter content may be the elemental ratio between critical components, e.g. Cu:S ratio, Fe:Si ratio, basicity, Lime Saturation Factor, etc. or the content of an “indicator” element, e.g. Si as an indicator of material hardness or grindability.Measurement of the composition in real time enables prompt feedback to the mining operators and also feed forward to the process operators. Compositional variability can be critical in the process and advance warning enables appropriate reactions prior to processing. This may include modifying the feed rate, changing the feed blend (through additives), or modifying reagent dosing in anticipation of a change in feed quality. Benefits include, but are not limited to; reducing waste processing, improved feed grade stability, reducing energy, water and grinding media consumption, producing less tailings, increasing process efficiency, higher metal recovery, better plant utilisation, reducing plant downtime, better utilising mined material, all achieved using the same process plant throughput capacity.CITATION:Kurth, H, 2015.
