Petroleum exploration in onshore Gippsland was directed in the 1950s and 1960s towards plays in the basal Latrobe and Strzelecki Groups, but these became forgotten in the 1970s with the Latrobe play discoveries offshore. The principal explorationists of the time were Woodside Oil and Arco Ltd, who then departed the scene after drilling some 18 wells without major success. In the late-1980s successful hydrocarbon finds in equivalent age Otway Group sediments in the Otway Basin were made and in early 1990 Tyers Petroleum began investigations into Strzelecki Group prospects as applied to the onshore Gippsland Basin. Some 18 anticlines have been mapped, based on shallower coal exploration drilling in the Latrobe Group, which from seismic and gravity evidence are believed to unconformably overlie similar anticlinal structures in the underlying Strzelecki Group. Strzelecki targets of interest within drilling depth are the basal Tyers Conglomerate/Rintouls Creek Sandstone Formations which outcrop in the north of the Latrobe Valley and are analogous to the Pretty Hill Sandstone in the Otway Basin. In addition, intra-Strzelecki Group targets similar to Heathfield and Windermere Sandstone Members are also considered to be present. Good source rocks are abundant including coal seams and carbonaceous sediments of Neocomian and Jurassic age, which lie within the oil window. Seal is provided by the overlying Aptian-Albian aged volcanogenic sediments. The Tyers/Rintouls sandstones - a target in the Woodside/Arco wells, with two exceptions, were not reached. Encouraging intra-Strzelecki shows were reported in many of the wells. Basal and intra-Strzelecki porous quartzose sandstones remain one of the few untested plays left in the Gippsland Basin and, in the onshore, merit extra attention as they he within the oil window at economically drillable depths.

Laboratory-scale experiments were carried out to investigate the effect of ladle slag composition on the decreasing behaviour of aluminum content in steel, i.e., reoxidation of molten steel in contact with slag, using a vertical tube furnace. The steel composition and the slag system chosen were for ultra low carbon and CaO-Al2O3-FeO-MnO-MgO based to simulate ULC steel grades. It has been observed that the reoxidation rate shows a good relationship with (T. Fe) content in slag. In case of (T. Fe) content higher than 1.5 weight per cent, the reoxidation rate increases linearly with increasing (T. Fe) content. For a given (T. Fe) content, it decreases with the increasing (CaO)/(Al2O3) ratio of the slag. However, in the case of (T. Fe) content lower than 1.5 weight percent, no particular relationships are observed between the reoxidation rate and (T. Fe) content or the (CaO)/(Al2O3) ratio of the slag. These results were used to propose for an aim a slag composition for the ULC steel grades in a steelmaking plant. The Skorpion Zinc Mine and Refinery is situated approximately 25 km north of Rosh Pinah, south-western Namibia. The supergene zinc oxide deposit at Skorpion is hosted in a volcano-sedimentary succession within the para-autochthonous Port Nolloth Zone of the Gariep Belt. Rock types hosting the ore deposit include altered and metamorphosed volcaniclastic and clastic sediments, limestone and rhyolite. At Skorpion, the metallurgical process is unique and the plant design requires minimal fluctuations within a selected feed grade. In addition, the presence of limestone inter-fingered with ore in some areas of the deposit results in dilution problems which may increase gangue acid consumption and therefore processing costs. Hence, selective mining is necessary to ensure the delivery of suitable ore to the processing plant, in order to keep the overall operating costs at a minimum. A complex control system is in place and is capable of a high degree of selectivity. The paper describes the grade control system in place at Skorpion Mine which ensures that the qualities of the blocks planned for mining and the material being mined meet the stringent process requirements of the refinery, i.e zinc grade, gangue acid consumption and deleterious elements that may impact on the efficiency and costs of the metallurgical process. El presente texto señala la aplicación del sistema de gestión de demanda y consumo de energía eléctrica en la fundición de Southern Perú. El sistema está compuesto por un módulo predictor de demanda eléctrica y un módulo de simulación del sistema eléctrico de la planta. El primero, se construyó utilizando redes neuronales con algoritmos de aprendizaje backpropagation, capaz de pronosticar la evolución horaria de la demanda eléctrica con un porcentaje de error cercano. Mientras que el segundo está basado en técnicas de estimación paramétrica, redes neuronales y ecuaciones matemáticas obtenidas por regresión estadística, que simula el comportamiento del sistema de energía eléctrica de la fundición. En ese sentido, los módulos facilitan una adecuada planificación, ya que permiten conocer el comportamiento de la demanda horaria y los patrones de consumo de la planta, incluyendo los componentes de la facturación. Así como las deficiencias energéticas y oportunidades de mejora, sobre la base del análisis de la información acerca de los equipos, procesos y planes de producción, así como programas de mantenimiento.

Stratigraphy of the Hamersley Province in Western Australia, featuring alternating units of banded iron formations and shales with contrasting electrical properties in a mostly gently undulating shallow-dipping layered geometry, is particularly favourable to airborne time-domain electromagnetic mapping techniques. Manipulated vertical cross-sections of modelled conductivity obtained from laterally constrained one-dimensional inversion of SkyTEM304 data enable the exploration geologist to interpret weathering profiles, shallow-dipping stratigraphy and steep structures, all of which are crucial aspects of bedded iron ore deposits genesis models.The Cobra Project is located 14 km east of the NNW-trending Menindee Fault Zone, which defines the western margin of the Hamersley Province, Western Australia. The region comprises an extensive plateau of Brockman Iron Formation cut by a series of horst and grabens with a regional dextral strike-slip component. The 150° striking horst and grabens and associated 060° striking conjugate faults have approximate frequencies of 400 and 2000 m, respectively, and control the bulk of the iron mineralisation. Syn to late 150° trending dykes in part intrude the faults.In the Cobra region, elucidating the structurally dislocated stratigraphy without closely spaced drilling is very challenging. Geological mapping is hindered by the paucity of mappable stratigraphic markers within the banded iron formations and kinematic indicators. Airborne magnetic and remote sensing data sets highlight the dense lineament network, but provide limited assistance in quantifying relatively small apparent displacements, or distinguishing faults from dykes with reasonable confidence.Interpretation of modelled conductivity cross-sections generated from laterally constrained one-dimensional inversion of airborne electromagnetic method (AEM) data offers invaluable insight where the quality of mapping or drilling is wanting. Subsequent targeted field checking and infill drilling validated the geological model interpreted from the integration of these data sets.The AEM technique alone cannot decipher the complex geological environments often present in the Hamersley Province but can facilitate effective iron ore exploration by focusing precious field time and assisting structural and stratigraphic interpretations in areas with sporadic and shallow geological data.CITATION:Murray, R, Neroni, R, Kepert, D and Bresnahan, J, 2017. THIS paper is the outcome of experiments carried on and experience gained. at the Waihi-Paeroa Gold Extraction Company's tailings plant at Waihi, New Zealand. The plant was erected to treat accumulated tailings which had been discharged into the Chinemuri River by the Waihi batteries.The Chinemuri River is a common sludge channel for all mining debris, tailings, and ashes from the power plants, the last being the cause of occasional high residues, which gave so much trouble to the management. The tailings were dredged from the bed of the river into barges by means of a Pohle air lift, the power being supplied: by a 13 b.h.p. Tangye oil engine driving an air compressor and a centrifugal pump. The sands were elevated from the barges by bucket-belt elevators over screens, to eliminate large particles and rubbish, into storage hoppers, and from there fed direct into four C. Judd Ltd. tube mills.The method of treatment was fine grinding in a weak cyanide solution, agitation in B. and M. tanks, filtration with turn-over vacuum filters, and precipitation with zinc shavings. The comparatively high values of the residues in gold gave a great deal of trouble, 'and it was not until repeated experiments were carried out that the cause of the trouble was located. In the Evraz Highveld production process, iron ore is prereduced in rotary kilns prior to charging into submerged arc furnaces (SAFs). Owing to the highly aggressive slags that are formed within the combustion zones of these kilns, chrome-oxide-containing lowcement castables have been used for some years in the kiln lining. Due to concerns around the potentially harmful effects should Cr(V1) be present in the spent linings, Highveld and its suppliers of kiln castables devoted time to developing alternative chrome-free lining materials. Such materials needed to be cost-effective and ensure good performance and improved kiln availability. This paper discusses all the parameters surrounding this development. Jet grouting was first introduced into North America in the late 1970's, soon after the conception of the system in Japan. However, it was not until the mid-1980's that the technique began to gain acceptance through the renewed interest and efforts of specialist U.S. geotechnical contractors. Since this time, innovations by both American users and other users worldwide have further advanced the technology, with a corresponding increase in the range of practical applications. This paper discusses the evolution of jet grouting in North America, from simple single-fluid methods to more complex triple-fluid methods, to the energy-intensive double-fluid and SuperJet methods. Case histories, illustrating a variety of jet grouting methods and applications, are cited to support the newest United States applications.

A critical element of the Transbay Transit Center Program, the Caltrain Downtown Extension (DTX) will extend commuter rail service into downtown San Francisco and accommodate future statewide high-speed rail service. The DTX project includes 1.8 miles of underground construction, comprising significant sections of mined and cut-and-cover tunnel. At the request of stakeholders, an updated cost estimate was prepared early in the project?s preliminary engineering phase. Unsurprisingly, this yielded a cost substantially higher than the available budget. This paper provides a summary of the management processes and planning decisions taken to bring the project back to budget, resulting in a configuration which derives maximum value from available funding and retains maximum flexibility for future system expansion.

Selection of resistance factors within Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) requires accurate assessment of uncertainty and bias in load and resistance. To date, many studies have focused predominantly on the assessment of uncertainty, while the potential for bias appears to be the dominant factor in design for consistent levels of reliability under a variety of situations. Bias comes from factors which have been ignored in design method development but significantly influence resistance when extrapolating from conditions typical of databases to those at a given site. Uncertainty and bias can be quantified as the coefficient of variation and mean (or median) of a data set, respectively, for statistical assessment of load and resistance factors. This paper first presents an overview of statistical assessment of resistance factors, and then discusses factors that influence uncertainty and bias when extrapolating to situations outside of conventional databases of driven pile axial capacity.

Our subject, "Safety, Legal, and Contracting," is a range of topics which covers a broad spectrum, but is obviously Intended to focus our attention upon certain particular aspects of tunnel problems. These are all fascinating and complex subjects, and others are much more qualified to discuss to discuss the fine points involved. Put after some 45 years' involvement as an inspector, engineer, contracting officer, and especially for the last 22 years as a contractor's estimator and manager, I have developed some strong and definite convictions to share with you. I hope it will serve to get you started thinking. My first tunnel experience was in a soft ground tunnel which was dug by hand, literally. The crown or arch back was taken out, a pebble at a time, by bare hand. The face was constantly breast-boarded, and the mucking was all done by hand shovel. My first rock tunnel was drilled by hand held drifters from the muck pile. Since then, most tunneling techniques have improved greatly. The jumbos, booms, muckers, and moles have taken over many of the back-breaking chores, and reduced the manpower requirements.

Various attempts have been made to build leadership and management expertise with little success. There are numerous reasons these attempts have failed. Three reasons, along with suggested solutions, will be explored: 1) lack of ownership of the development process by those affected; 2) lack of congruence of the development process used and the business strategies of the organization; and 3) a comprehensive development process. We will discuss a development model applied inside a smelter and refining complex over one year involving all levels of management. The process was credited with helping to substantially reduce cost and enable breakthroughs in production, quality and safety results.

"Basal till sampling techniques were used to search for gold mineralization in the Timmins, Ontario area. During 1978 and 1979, approximately 90 overburden sampling drill holes were completed in Murphy and Hoyle Townships to test specific geophysically defined target areas. A conventional tricone dual tube drill system, and a unique retractable tricone/rock coring system were used to various advantages.First pass till sampling at 800 to 1200 ft intervals perpendicular to ice transport direction yielded anomalous gold values in till and carbonatized quartz pyrite-rich bedrock chips, and lateritic soil. Subsequent induced polarization-resistivity surveys defined the areal extent of a pyritic carbonate alteration zone. A second pass till sampling/limited rock coring program evaluated the gold mineralization potential of the alteration zone. Diamond drilling has substantiated the till and bedrock gold anomalies. Further evaluation of this mineralization is currently in progress. IntroductionThis paper describes an integrated geochemical/geophysical gold mineralization discovery case history in Hoyle Township. This discovery is on a property jointly owned (I983) by Canamax Resources Inc. and Du Pont of Canada Exploration Limited. Exploration of the property began in 1978 by Rosario Resources Canada Ltd. and in 1979 a joint venture agreement was signed with Du Pont of Canada Exploration Limited. Rosario Resources Canada Ltd. was taken over by Amax Minerals Exploration in 1981, which became Canamax Resources Inc. in 1982.The work described in this paper deals with a gold mineralization discovery located three-quarters of a mile northwest of the gold deposit currently being readied for underground exploration and development. Further drilling is required to investigate the economic potential of the gold mineralization herein described."

The Zagros long tunnel is one of the main components of Sirvan water transfer project in western Iran. It is approximately 48 km in length and consisted of two lots. The second 26 km lot of this tunnel is under construction by a 6.73 m diameter double shield (DS) TBM. The tunnel passes through several formations with wide range rock mass qualities. During the tunnel alignment, changes in rock quality were highly frequent from poor to very good. The encountered geological conditions required TBM operation to change frequently from hard rock to soft, dry to flowing, sticky to nonsticky ground (and vice versa), more often than expected. In the course of tunneling, the machine has encountered nearly many adverse geologic conditions. The most important problems have been sudden high volume water inflow into the tunnel, sticky ground, and gas seepage, all of which resulted in reduced TBM advance rates. This study will high-light two difficult ground conditions including large water ingress and sticky ground and also the related problems encountered by the TBM along 8 km of excavated tunnel. In sticky grounds, cleaning of the clogged cutter head caused many delays and contributed to additional downtime. Application of some operational modifications, including decreased TBM thrust showed satisfactory results in such cases. While reduced thrust resulted in reduced penetration rate, but the overall TBM advance was greatly improved by the increase utilization rate and elimination of down time related to cleaning of the head. To cope with high water inflow, application of preventive measures such as pre-grouting has proved to be a more efficientsolution. The sealing of ground water inflow also decreased seepage of dangerous H2S gas and other chemicals such as hydrocarbons accompanying the groundwater.

The Statnamic loading test is a new and innovative method for testing deep foundations. The test is relatively inexpensive, quick, easily mobilized, provides for direct measurement of applied load and corresponding displacement, and is capable of very high loading capacities. The long duration of the applied loading, as compared to a dynamic loading test, allows for a straightforward determination of the static behaviour of the foundation tested. A new method of analysis of the Statnamic loading test, the Equilibrium Point Method, is presented. A description is given of the pile-soil model and a demonstration of how the static load-displacement behaviour of deep foundations may be predicted from the Statnamic loading test data. The Equilibrium Point Method of analysis is applied to three types of deep foundations in soils which respond differently to fast loading rates. These case histories, from Canada and the United States, include data from static loading tests for direct comparison, and demonstrate the ability of the Equilibrium Point Method to predict static behaviour of the deep foundations.

INTRODUCTION Mica Dam is located on the Columbia River just downstream of the "big bend" of the Columbia, where it leaves the Rocky Mountain Trench and begins to flow southwards, approximately 85 miles north of Revelstoke, B.C. (Fig.l). The dam was built as one of three Columbia River Treaty dams in British Columbia which regulate the flow of the river and provide flood control downstream in Washington and Oregon. In addition, the three Canadian dams make possible greatly increased power generation at existing power plants in the United States and further development along the Columbia and its tributaries in British Columbia. History Mica Dam, constructed during the period 1967 to 1973, is a zoned earthfill embankment 650 feet high, which has 12,000,000 acre feet of live storage and an available head of 550 feet. Power intakes which would serve either a six-unit surface or underground plant were incorporated into the design and construction of the right abutment of the dam (Fig. 2). Prior to 1971 alternative 2500 MW capacity surface and underground powerplant arrangements were studied. Cost estimates for the two alternatives were the same within the limits of estimating procedures. However, it was believed there was a certain continuing risk in locating a surface plant at the toe of a steep canyon wall. Controlling the level of impurities in copper refinery electrolytes is essential to achieving acceptable cathode purity. Purge of electrolyte is not an entirely satisfactory solution since the cost of neutralization, waste disposal, and replacement acid can be appreciable. The APU® process utilizes ion exchange resin to sorb sulphuric acid while rejecting metal salt impurities. Extensively employed for recovery of waste pickling and anodizing acids since 1977, the system is now being used at several refineries for removal of contaminants such as antimony, bismuth, iron, and nickel. The purified acid, which is recovered from the resin by water elution, is recycled back to the refinery tank-house, while the metals are typically recovered from the de-acidified by-product solution by precipitation.

The phosphorus content of the banded iron formation (BIF) and of the associated iron ore deposits in the north west of Western Australia is known to vary widely, a fact which has considerable econ~mic significance. Trendall and Blockley (1970) have described the variety of textural appearances of apatite in the Hamersley Group BlF, and suggest that apatite may account for the entire phosphorus content of the unaltered BIF.A preliminary investigation using an M.A.C. electron microprobe analyser has shown that, at least in some iron ores and in partially enriched BIF and associated shales, the phosphorus occurrence is more complicated than this. A suite of samples was examined from one location which covered the entire Dales Gorge Member and some adjoining macrobands in the Mt. McRae shale, together with samples selected for their high phosphorus content, degree of ore enrichment, and position relative to the enrichment zone. Calcium apatite was not observed in any sample of ore from this sequence, despite its ubiquitous occurrence in the BIF. Silicate mineralogy in the enriched regions also differs from that in the BIF, but this change has not yet been studied in detail.The phosphorus content of goethite in one orebody is often high and appears to be in solid solution in the goethite structure. It shows little or no variability on a micro-scale within a grain, except where theremay be a zoned enrichment near boundaries and solution channels. There is also a limited solubility of phosphorus in hematite (the maximum observed by the author is 0·1 per cent P); but where the hematite is martitic (after magnetite) its phosphorus content is always low or zero. In some bands, martitic hematite has been hydrated to goethite, and this also has a very low phosphorus content. Phosphorus was not found in the silica or silicates in the ore, and even when iron enrichment is just beginning, a limited suite of samples from the BIF suggests that the phosphorus content of the chert microbands is almost entirely in the microscopic goethite nuclei (after riebeckite) scattered throughout the chert. Introduction Newmont Mining Corp.'s Carlin Gold Mining Co. mines gold ore and waste material from four open-pit mines in Northeastern Nevada. Combined production rate is 24.5 Mt/a (27 million stpy). The company is producing gold bullion from the 2.4 kt/d (2600 stpd) Carlin Mill No. 1. and the 2.3 kt/d (2600 stpd) Maggie Creek heap leaching plant. In August 1985, the 6.3 kt/d (7000 stpd) Carlin Mill No. 2 at Gold Quarry came on-line. The total combined throughput of 11.2 kt/d (12,000 stpd) will make Carlin Gold Mining one of the largest US gold producers. Feasibility studies are underway to increase the total gold out-put from Gold Quarry. This will be done by adding a continuous dump-leaching process that will recover gold from lower grade ore. History In 1961, Newmont exploration geologists located claims in the Lynn Creek mining district near Carlin, NV. An exploration drilling program revealed significant gold mineralization. A stepped-up drilling program revealed an ore body with an estimated 10 Mt (11 million st) of ore containing 109 t (3.5 million oz) of gold. Test results in 1963 allowed metallurgists to develop the flowsheet and design for a 1.8-kt/d (2000-stpd) countercurrent decantation (CCD) cyanide plant. Carlin Gold Mining Co. was formed to operate the property. Carlin purchased its first mining equipment in 1965. This consisted of two Bucyrus-Erie 2.7 m3 (3.5 cu yd) shovels and nine 27.2 t (30 st) Wabco Haulpak trucks, two Inger¬soll-Rand track-mounted drills, one Chicago Pneumatic T-650 rotary drill, one rubber tired Michigan 280 dozer, one Caterpillar D-8 36A track dozer, one Caterpillar 16 motor grader, and the necessary ancillary equipment. The fleet was capable of mining 3.2 Mt/a (3.5 mil¬lion stpy) working two eight-hour shifts, five days a week. In 1967, one P&H 1500 3.8 m3(5 cu yd) diesel electrical shovel and three 59 t (65 st) Dart trucks were added to the fleet, along with a Chicago Pneumatic rubber tire mounted rotary drill. This equipment addition increased the mining capabilities to 5.7 Mt/a (6.3 million stpy). Three separate pits, the Main, East, and West, within a 1.6-km (1-mile) radius of the Carlin mill were being mined. The crew consisted of 46 hourly men and three supervisors. This equals 497 t/ total hourly manshift (548 st) or 407 t/total manshift (515 st). Rising gold prices in the early 1970s allowed lower grade deposits to be mined at greater distances from the mill. The Boot-strap pit, 19.3 km (12 miles) north of Carlin, was started in 1973.
