"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. Ore-bearing intrusions in the Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB) were examined from nine mines: Boshekul, Nurkazgan, Kounrad, Borly, Aktogai, Koksai, Baogutu, Tuwu and Erdenet. The intrusions are diorite, granodiorite and tonalite with SiO2 contents ranging from 58 to 75 wt per cent, and show mildly fractionated rare earth elements (REE) ([LREE]N/[HREE]N = 2.7–4.7) – light REE and heavy REE – and varying Eu anomalies ([Eu]/[Eu]* = 0.58–1.4). The ratios of Sr/Y vary from 7.9 to 115 and the contents of Y from 4.6 to 23.9 ppm. The parental magmas of the intrusions are intrinsically oxidised. Zircon grains in the ore-bearing rocks from large- and intermediate-sized porphyry Cu deposits show high Ce4+/Ce3+ ratios characterised by 65–422 at Boshekul (>4.1 Mt Cu), 76–480 at Kounrad (>4.8 Mt Cu), 90–280 at Aktogai (>12 Mt Cu), 80–250 at Erdenet (>11 Mt Cu) 74–370 at Nurkazgan (>3.9 Mt Cu), 100–210 at Koksai (>1.6 Mt Cu), and 71–340 at Tuwu (~2.0 Mt Cu). In two small deposits, the ore-bearing rocks display low values of Ce4+/Ce3+; Borly (0.6 Mt Cu) ranging from 28 to 158, and Baogutu (0.6 Mt Cu) from 29 to 113. The Ce4+/Ce3+ ratio of 120 distinguishes large intermediate-size deposits from small-size deposits. It describes mining and milling practices, gives costs, and discusses transportation, climate, power, labor, and other conditions that affect them. The materiel upon which the paper was based was gathered during a field survey in the summer of 1937.

This report is in partial fulfillment of Contract S0241051 awarded to COMINEC on June 27, 1974. 'Me purpose of the work under this contract is to develop a conceptual design for an automated longwall mining system. The conceptual design will serve as the basis for future design and development of an automated longwall mining system capable of sustained production in excess of 2,500 tons per shift with reduced manpower which will ultimately be demonstrated in an area where conventional longwall mining has been successful. 1.2 DEFINITION OF THE PROBLEM 1.2.1 Why An Automated System The most obvious benefit of automation and remote control in a longwall mining system is the reduction of accidents consequent upon a reduced working force in the hazardous face areas. However, another important aspect of the problem is the skilled labor shortage which is being compounded by the need for vastly increased coal production. The United States coal mining industry had a working force of almost 600,000 miners in 1928 but was able to muster only 145,000 miners in 1970. The miners required to staff the additional working sections and the new mines necessary to meet our energy needs are simply not available. Only automation and remote control will permit a reduced work force with increased production by keeping the face equipment operating continuously.

Ontario Power Generation is building a 10.4-km water diversion tunnel in Niagara Falls, Canada. The tunnel is a two-pass, cast-in-place prestressed concrete-lined pres-sure tunnel with a nominal internal diameter of 12.7 m. It is mostly situated within the Queenston formation which swells in contact with fresh water and has very aggressive groundwater. Tunneling in this material presents challenges in both design and construction. The tunnel design includes for a membrane to eliminate the potential for rock swelling and to protect the concrete liner from the ground conditions. A unique three-stage Geotechnical Baseline Report (GBR) is being used and is expected to provide an equitable method of dealing with any variations in subsurface conditions.

The Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Corp. announced plans to raise June ingot prices by 4 cents to 57 cents per pound. Producers? April value for 99.5 percent unalloyed aluminum ingot was at 53 cents per pound. Domestic merchants last month were quoting the metal at 48-49 cents per pound. Primary aluminum producers began restarting production facilities following the settlement of the coal strike. Noranda Aluminum Inc. recalled workers to prepare potlines for production at its plant at New Madrid, Mo., which had closed February 14, 1978 due to the shortage of coal. Eastalco Aluminum Co. resumed full capacity production at its Frederick, Md. smelter where production had been cut by 30 percent. Anaconda Aluminum Co. resumed full capacity production at its Sebree, Ky. smelter.

Expanded use of plant information on the desktop is a standard tool for revenue improvement, cost reduction, and adherence to production constraints. The industrial component desktop support access to information for continuous improvement and innovation by staff personnel and engineers. Collaboration between groups enables the implementation of an overall process effectiveness index based on losses due to equipment availability, production recovery and quality rate. In this sense, the paper point out three cases studies of large integrated power stations.

This survey is one of a series of Bureau of Mines publications designed to serve the needs of Government and industry for comprehensive information on mineral commodities and activities. Copper, a versatile metal, has been vital to all civilizations from pre-historic times to the present. Its essential value in antiquity and until the nineteenth century arose from its malleability and ease of working, its corrosion resistance and durability, its attractive colors in alloyed and unalloyed forms, and, of course, its availability. The principal uses were for tools, utensils, vessels, weapons, pipe, statuary and other objects of art, and for building and architectural purposes where formability, permanence, and beauty were necessary qualities. Utilization of copper based on these physical and mechanical properties has grown tremendously for commercial, structural, mechanical, architectural, and art items; and its capacity for forming numerous alloys has led to a myriad of applications from miniature copper and brass eyelets to huge bronze battleship propellers. The early nineteenth century marks the epoch of the greatest use of copper, transmitting electrical energy. This particular property of copper is fundamental to the spectacular growth of the electrical industry and all associated industries relying on electricity for power, light, and heat. More than half of all copper produced is used for transmission of electricity.

In connection with a Bureau of Mines research program on utilization of Cuban lateritic ores, a comprehensive review was made of the chemical literature on nickel and cobalt. Initially, the review had as its objective the selection, from the voluminous literature dealing with the chemistry of these two metals, of only those references to reactions that were especially pertinent, or at least closely related, to the field of extractive metallurgy. Later, the coverage was extended to include references to the techniques and plant applications of extractive metallurgical procedures for the recovery of nickel and cobalt. In this report, the period from January 1929 to July 1955 has been covered, as it seemed logical that recent literature should be of greatest value. This cutoff date was established in order that the bibiliography could be issued at an early date, inasmuch as currently much work is in progress on the lateritic ores. Later, a supplement will be prepared extending the coverage to about 1900.

The range of environments which control the level of ground support required vary greatly in terms of rock type, rock structure and the mining method used. At the operating mines visited during this review the level of ground support was such that incidence of rock-fall- related accidents were rare. It was also found that methods existed to support most of the conditions encountered. The main problem areas were weak rock, major geological structures, areas of heavy jointing, high development density and areas affected by high mining-induced stresses and blasting. With stope support the level of success was much lower than that achieved in development; the larger spans and more rapid changes in geometry of open stopes compared with cut and fill stoping (where cables were originally used) led to significant problems. Before a useable design method for cable support of stope walls and pillars can be obtained the precise failure mode of the walls and pillars, and the interaction of the support and the rock mass must be investigated.

GENERAL DEVELOPMENTS IN CONCENTRATING COPPER ORES FROM 1912 TO 1932 During the east 20 years the milling of copper ores as practiced in the larger concentrators has chanced to such an extent that comparatively few of the machines in use at the beginning of this period remain in service today. Concentrating Practice in 1912. In 1912 the usual equipment for concentrating copper ores comprised jigs for the coarser sizes, tables and sand vanners for the intermediate sizes, and vanners for the finer crushed and ground material. Rolls operated in series under graded crushing conditions, were in common use for the liberation of the copper minerals; grinding by Chilean or Muntington mills ordinarily was confined to the coarser tailings of jigs and tables.

BACKGROUND This paper discusses work performed as part the rehabilitation of the gravity flow section of the New Croton Aqueduct (NCA) during an approximately two year period between 2004 and 2006. The goal of the project was to restore the gravity flow section of the NCA to optimal operating condition, extending the lifespan of this significant water supply for the New York City metropolitan area. Rehabilitation of the NCA was purposely scheduled before the completion of the new NCA Water Treatment Plant now under construction (Figure 1). The NCA is a 3.73 to 4.34 m (12.25 to 14.25 ft) diameter brick-lined circular andhorseshoe shaped water tunnel constructed between 1885 and 1891. The NCA conveys water for approximately 50 km (31 miles) by gravity and pressurized flow from the New Croton Reservoir in Westchester County, NY to distribution and reservoir points along its alignment, terminating at a distribution station at 135th Street and Convent Avenue in Manhattan, NY. Prominent features of the NCA include a large intake facility at New Croton Reservoir, 38.6 km (24 miles) of gravity flow horseshoe shaped aqueduct, 11.3 km (7 miles) of pressurized flow circular aqueduct, 2 siphons, and 36 open shafts and headhouse chambers which are used as sampling, access and blow-off locations. Until a partial inspection in 1982, the NCA had flowed continuously since its completion nearly 100 years prior. Flow tests have confirmed that the NCA can convey up to 12.7 m3/s (290 mgd) (Figure 2). Cover depths of NCA vary considerably, ranging from a few to hundreds of meters, typically of hard rock. Primarily mined using means conventional for the late1800s, construction of the NCA also employed cut and cover methods in several low-lying sections of the alignment, totaling approximately 1.6 km (1 mile). The NCA crosses through numerous lithologic changes, fault/shear zones and under several significant water bodies including the Pocantico, Saw Mill and Harlem Rivers and the Tarrytown Reservoir. The NCA passes under the Harlem River as a siphon at a depth of approximately 122 m (400 ft) below grade (Figure 3). Soon after construction the Aqueduct Commission Reports on the New Croton Aqueduct documented prominent defects such as large voids behind the lining. More recently, large-scale inspections of the gravity flow section performed during the 1990sand a 2004 inspection of portions of the pressurized sections of the NCA have revealed additional defects such as open and/or deteriorated masonry joints/cracks, leaks ranging from trickles to several liters per minute into and out of the NCA, missing bricks, formed openings, and in one place, a rupture through the liner with discernable

The economics of precious metals -- depending upon who is involved --could be the economics of hope, of fear, indeed of profit and perhaps survival. For those investors seeking capital gains in a puzzling economy, precious metals involve the economics of hope. Those who are convinced that currency soon won't be worth the paper it's printed on turn to precious metals because of the economics of fear. Gold and silver have been a storehouse of wealth since biblical times. The economics of fear during the past 500 years on the Continent has caused almost every European family to make sure a private stockpile or hoard of gold, silver or coins is at hand in case the paper currency of their country undergoes the kind of disaster that came to the German Mark after World War I. Understandably, for mining companies involved in the production of precious metals, the elements of operations and management are directly concerned with the economics of profit -- and perhaps survival. To the American miner the price of precious metals in the marketplace is a matter of daily concern. After decades of selling silver to the US Government at 64.64 cents an ounce, producing silver mines suddenly became faced with prices breaking $5, $10 and $20 per ounce, and approaching $50 an ounce during the period 1978-1981. What should the miner expect one year in the future? Five years?

The introduction of mechanized mining in coal mines, which has speeded loading, has emphasized the importance of efficient underground transportation systems. The purpose of this investigation is to study and analyze various systems now in use, and to derive conclusions therefrom. This report may be helpful to operators who are planning new systems of transportation or who are revising present systems to increase their efficiency. This paper is the first of a series on this subject and des¬cribes some systems of transportation `utilizing rail haulage, ACKNOWLEDGMENT The information used in preparing this report was obtained through the courtesy and cooperation of the officials of the companies whose mines were studied. The descriptions of the transportation systems at the mines included herein have been checked for accuracy, and publication of the data has been approved by the executives of the several operating companies.

The recent evolution of the piling market clearly shows a growing demand for screw piles with soil displacement. The recently developed Omega Screw pile ful-fill these new expectations, combining the advantages of vibration-free systems and the behaviour of a displacement pile. The paper describes recent experience and new applications with this very promissing pile. Full-scale load tests were carried out in different countries as U.K. or Sweden. A very attractive and innovative piled embankment is also described, using geogrids in order to transfer the loads from the superstructure to non-reinforced Omega-piles.

During longwall mining in the Bowen Basin, open tension cracks formed by overburden subsidence occur to a height of about 175 m above the mining horizon. Within this zone, water in aquifers or inundated workings will flow into the mine.At the Oaky Creek mines Aquila seam, open cut pits containing pit water overlie German Creek seam longwall panels at a height of about 105 m. The highly saline water is classified as contaminated and cannot be discharged off-site. Because alternative water storage facilities were not available, innovative water management solutions were needed to allow longwall mining to proceed without underground flooding.Computer modelling and underground inflow measurements have been completed to accurately determine inflow rates into longwall mines from overlying water sources at increasing overburden heights. Research work has also included determining cost-effective blanket treatment of final voids and reshaping spoil piles to minimise downward seepage.Ponded water overlying the Aquila low, Grasstree south and A6 pits required remedial works prior to longwall undermining to prevent flooding. In the Aquila low pit it was necessary to partition the pit and remove water overlying longwall 32. Two in-pit bridges were constructed by dozing and track compacting low wall spoil. The final void above the longwall panel was kept dry during undermining. Maximum recorded underground inflow rate was 30.0 L/s.The Grasstree south pit final void, part of the ramp and much of the spoil piles were inundated prior to undermining of 308 panel. A bridge and blanket were required to prevent ponding above the longwall. Maximum recorded inflow during undermining was 23.2 L/s.The pit A6 south final void, which contained dumped, saturated rejects and inundated highwall mining entries was undermined by longwall 36 at the Oaky No 1 underground mine. Because mapping of highwall entries was not available, the maximum calculated inflow rate of 73.0 L/s was based on all design entries being fully inundated. The actual inflow rate during longwall mining ranged up to 20.0 L/s.Water management improvements that have been implemented include greater use of contaminated pit water to wash coal, use of evaporation fans, and installation of a 6 ML/day reverse osmosis plant for water purification.CITATION:Klenowski, G and Winter, S, 2017. The proposed 1.83km long twin bore A3 Hindhead road tunnel planned for contruction in 2008 is being delivered under a Highways Agency Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) contract. The proposed construction methodology is progressive mechanical excavation of a horseshoe shaped tunnel with shotcrete installed close behind the face using robotic spraying equipment. The tunneling medium is a ‘soft rock’ sandstone for which there was little previous tunneling experience, requiring extensive geotechnical investigations and an innovative approach to lining design. A 240m long portal section though sandy material utilising a steel pipe umbrella is also required. This paper describes the development of the tunnel planning and design including the most recent developments in UK road tunnels, and the innovation included in the ‘permanent’ primary lining design.

Ensuring that diesel particulate matter (DPM) levels in underground metal and non-metal mines are maintained below statutory limits is an essential requirement of mine ventilation systems. However, despite the cost of providing ventilation, air ventilation rates are usually based upon models, assumptions, or measurements integrated over long durations rather than actual need. Real-time measurement of DPM, interpreted in terms of mine activity schedules, can offer better ventilation management to keep DPM within regulated levels while controlling costs. This work presents data from three demonstration sites with in-mine applications of an environmental particulate sensor that measured black carbon (BC) as a surrogate for DPM.Aethalometers are a class of environmental monitors that measure the light absorbance of aerosol particles at several optical wavelengths. A model AE33 Aethalometer was operated in three separate mines for periods of two weeks, three months, and seven-plus months, and the data was reported in real time as a concentration of BC. Concentration of aromatic organic compounds, which can indicate other forms of combustion, was also reported. The data was used to:- measure the relative efficiency of a new scale-model DPM air scrubber- determine if ventilation could be reduced in a shotcrete loading facility without compromising air quality- evaluate diurnal and weekly DPM levels in a large-entry stone mine. Instrument data were displayed locally and stored for later downloading in all cases. In one mine, the instrument was connected to a local controller, and in another it was connected to the mine’s underground network so that DPM data was presented in real time to a display in the mine ventilation engineering office on the surface.The results showed that the air scrubber removes from 82 per cent to 95 per cent of the DPM; that DPM produced during shotcrete loading is only a minor part of overall DPM levels; and that wide variations in DPM levels exist in the limestone operation. The DPM monitor operated continuously for extended periods in these underground environments. The only maintenance required was the routine replacement of filter tape, typically on a two-week schedule. A sample diluter, which is currently being tested, could extend the intervals between filter changes. The paper discusses assay methods generally used when prospecting for gold, and also the applicability of various chemical methods, it describes a new paper chromatographic technique.for making fairly rapid semi-quantitative assays for very fine gold. Testing of the method in field work shows that this simple method could have applications in geologic work, in prospecting and in certain routine mine sampling work. It is not yet a method that can be used to detect anomalies in traces of gold dispersed around an orebody, as is general practice in geochemical prospecting.INTRODUCTIONAccording to the English economist Harrod (1958), "the acute shortage of gold in the world-because currency value has not been adjusted in line with the fall in the goods value of the various currencies-has been a familiar fact for some time now". Harrod calculates that a rise in the price of gold to double its present value is necessary to rectify this condition, and that, if this rise were to take place, increase in production and reduction in private hoarding might well bring annual accretion to world stocks from the presentaverage of about $464 million to a figure close to the $2,000 million that would probably eiiminate these shortages.Any increase in the price of gold is bound to lead to a great increase in prospecting at working mines, in abandoned areas and possibly in untouched country. Prospecting, techniques for base metal orebodies have improved greatly in the last thirty years; but methods available to detect gold occurring without accessory metals have not received the same attention. Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B.Sc. (Eng.) (Metallurgy and Materials) degree Corrosion in exhaust systems can occur on both the interior and exterior surfaces. Chloride-containing de-icing salts on the roads in colder countries greatly increases the rate of corrosion on the exterior surfaces. This paper investigates the relative exterior corrosion resistance of three alloys?two ferritic stainless steels( AISI Types 409 and 441) and an aluminized mild steel. The exhaust system is split into two categories?the hot end and the cold end. A test for each of these ends was designed?the standard ASTM G85test was modified to create a simulated driving cycle. The cold end test samples were exposed to ten driving cycles, and the hot end test samples were exposed to five driving cycles. A driving cycle constitutes the car being started from cold, driven until the operating temperatures are reached, and switched off and allowed to cool. Pitting corrosion is the primary corrosion mechanism occurring at the cold end of the exhaust system. The aluminized mild steel was the most resistant alloy in this test, and Type 409 the least. However, once the protective aluminium layer degrades, corrosion will occur rapidly. At the hot end of the exhaust system, spalling of the surface oxide layer is the primary corrosion mechanism occurring. Type 441 was the most resistant in this test, and the aluminized mild steel the least resistant. Potentiodynamic tests were performed on the alloys?the results agreed with the results obtained in the exposure tests.

Due to the importance of maintaining open airways on a longwall panel, mine management decided to install cribs made of foamed cement. Foamed cement had been used at other company operations on several projects. A recent test at a sister operation had proven the crib installation technique and established that foamed cement cribs could provide better support than wooden cribs. The area to be supported was in a remote location; the limited material needs of foamed cement cribs offered a substantial advantage. In mid February 1993, 75 foamed cement cribs were installed on the tailgate of the active longwall panel. The 75 cribs resisted both horizontal and vertical stresses while successfully supporting the entry.
