The two contracts of the Big Walnut Augmentation/Rickenbacker Interceptor(BWARI) sewer project for the City of Columbus, Ohio total nearly 35,000 feet of 14and 12-foot diameter tunnel. EPB TBMs will install precast concrete segmental lining through difficult glacial soils ranging from clean granular to hard till with high groundwater and boulders, crossing roads, railroads, and a large stream. Construction of 12 shafts and a large Interconnect Structure involving major ground stabilization work is required. The paper will review design of major project elements and present an update on construction progress.

Kansanshi Copper Smelter began operation in March 2015. The smelter features a single Isasmelt furnace for smelting, one 6-in-line electric furnace for matte-settling and slag-cleaning duties, four Peirce- Smith converters and two rotary anode furnaces. A 1,450 t/day oxygen plant and a 4,085 t/day sulphuric acid plant are included in the smelter operations. This paper gives an overview of the operational performance to date with summary data for each smelter section. Challenges such as an unforeseen refractory failure in the Isasmelt furnace in 2016 are discussed. Design improvements around the electric furnace are mentioned. Plans for potential future improvements are put into context. A consistent focus on operations, maintenance and continuous improvement has seen the smelter easily achieve its nameplate capacity of 1.2 million tonnes per annum of copper concentrate throughput. The smelter now operates consistently at a concentrate throughput rate of 1.38 million tonnes per annum of copper concentrate. INTRODUCTION The smelter was commissioned in March 2015. Design and commissioning of the smelter have been discussed by de Vries, Hunt, Hanschar and Louie (2016). The smelter rapidly ramped up to achieve nameplate production (1.2 million tonnes per year concentrate) and in 2018 operated consistently at the rate of 1.38 million tonnes per year concentrate. This paper presents major operational data for each section of the plant and describes significant events and improvements during the first four years of operation. The smelter flowsheet is shown in Figure 1.

WHEN George C. Stone, a Director of the Institute, and so well known to our Members in connection with the Institute's many activities was abroad in 1.919, he secured an interesting collection of these coins, which appeared in Zinc, a publication by the New Jersey Zinc Co. Regarding this collection of coin, Mr. Stone says: "During the war, all gold and most of the silver disappeared, making small change very scarce. As the French Government was fully occupied by the war, it allowed various Chambers of Commerce and other bodies to issue money, both paper and coins. Many of the latter were made of zinc, and I secured several while in Paris. We had all heard of the Belgian and German zinc coins, but I imagine few knew how many different kinds there were. The accompanying plates show both sides of those I got. I took all that the dealer had; but he said that there were a number of others in existence. The coins in the bottom line were issued by the Germans in Belgium during the war and all are still in common use. The first two in the next to the bottom line are German. All of the others were issued by Chambers of Commerce or corporations. A few have been nickel plated; these look and wear much better than the others. "Coins" made of pasteboard were also issued by similar bodies, also notes.

Room temperature infrared reflection spectra of 2 n-type homo-epitaxial epifilms have been measured in the work. The effect of the refractive index on the determination of layer thickness using traditional calculation measurement is studied and some improvements have been added to the measurement to improve the accuracy and stability of the measured results. Results of the improved method have great agreement with the results from SEM and both variance and mean relative error decrease an order of magnitude.

The Narragansett Bay Commission (NBC) is a regional sewer authority that serves ten communities in the Providence, Rhode Island metropolitan area. From 1992 to 1999, the NBC developed a comprehensive facilities plan to abate Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) pollution in the Upper Narragansett Bay. The plan underwent many major evolutions during this period, most notably the addition of a stakeholder?s process by which NBC demonstrated a site-specific plan to control the pollutants and meet water quality standards. The favored solution consisted of deep tunnel storage with treatment at existing wastewater facilities that had been recently upgraded. In 1999, a final plan was accepted which included two tunnels, five CSO interceptors, twelve sewer separation projects, a wetland facility, and a wastewater treatment facility upgrade. The program is to be constructed over 20 years in three sequential phases (Figure 1). Phase I of the program includes a 4,963 m (16,284 ft) long, 7.9 m (26 ft) diameter, 70.1 m (230 ft) deep storage tunnel; seven drop shafts with connecting adits; ancillary facilities; and a pump station. Construction of Phase I began in 2001 and is expected to be operational by October 2008. This paper focuses on design and construction of the Fields Point Tunnel Pump Station (FPTPS)located at the south end of the main spine tunnel. A189 Ml/day (50 MGD) pump station is required to lift CSO flows from the tunnel to the Fields Point Wastewater Treatment Facility (FPWWTF). The pumps are to be housed in a 35.6 m × 18.6 m ×20.7 m (117 ft × 61 ft × 68 ft), 91.4 m (300 ft) deep cavern excavated in a complex meta-sedimentary rock of the Rhode Island Formation, and connected to the surface by 9.7 m (32 ft) and 3.4 m (11 ft) diameter shafts. Factors which influenced selection of the size, configuration and location of facilities included the preferred arrangement of pumps, critical aspects of site geology, and estimated cost. Technical and value engineering reviews also affected the final design. Following Notice to Proceed (NTP), concerns were raised by the contractor regarding constructability and design. Additional geotechnical investigation and independent engineering review were employed to validate the design assumptions. The cavern was successfully excavated and sup-ported in rock, completed on schedule and within budget in 2005. In 1992 the NBC retained Louis Berger Group (LBG) as Program Manager (PM) for the CSO Abatement Program. LBG thereafter formed a design team including: Jacobs Engineering Group(JEG) as the designer for underground structures and near surface collection facilities; Black and Veatch(B&V) to design the pumping system and associated facilities; Haley and Aldrich (H&A) to oversee the geotechnical program; and Malcolm Pirnie to design the system-wide instrumentation and control system. Construction management, resident engineering, and inspection services were provided by the joint venture Gilbane/Jacobs Associates (G/J).

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Thomson Orogen is a large but poorly understood element of Queensland geology. Extensive cover conceals the Thomson Orogen at depth, thus limiting studies to a small number of surface exposures. Previous studies of the northern Thomson Orogen have been restricted to the largest of these exposures in the Anakie Inlier and Charters Towers Province. Less extensive exposures, including Mt McLaren in east-central Queensland, are largely overlooked and poorly documented. Fieldwork suggests that Mt McLaren is a west-tilted fault block of Thomson Orogen metasediments that are at least 2200 m thick. The substantial thickness of these sediments (which we have named the Mt McLaren Formation) and the consistent shallow marine facies throughout the block suggest deposition in an actively subsiding basin. Initial dating of detrital zircons places deposition of the Mt McLaren Formation in the Late Cambrian to Early Ordovician, allowing correlations with formations of similar composition and age in the nearby Anakie Inlier and Charters Towers Province. Both of these areas have a long history of mining and exploration for gold and base metals, suggesting that correlation of basement sequences across these areas could be beneficial for exploration models of the Thomson Orogen as well as for tectonic models of eastern Australia.CITATION:Lee, M, Verdel, C, Welsh, K and Oorloff, A, 2015. The Capitol Area East End Complex is currently being constructed under contract with the State of California Department of General Services on two sites adjacent to the grounds of the California State Capitol Building in downtown Sacramento. The complex will consolidate the headquarters of the Departments of Health Services and Education, which currently occupy several facilities located throughout Sacramento. When completed in 2003, the complex will be the largest civic office project in California history, with approximately 1.5 million square feet of office space and housing nearly 6,300 state workers. The total project is being constructed on five separate blocks in downtown Sacramento, Blocks 171 through 174 and 225. Separate design/build contracts were executed for the construction on Blocks 171 through 174 and the construction on Block 225. The scope of this paper is limited to construction on Blocks 171 through 174, which comprise a square, two blocks on a side, bounded by 15th, 17th, L, and N streets, located immediately to the east of Capitol Park and the State Capitol Building, as pictured in the image shown below.

Bateman Engineering Project's acid-plant track record goes back to 1977. Bateman Engineering can design sulphuric plants based on gas from sulphur burners, metallurgical off gas as well as pyrite roasting systems. Bateman Engineering has a technology marketing agreement with NORAM Engineering Ltd of Canada to provide state-of-the-art, well-proven acid plant technology, and also has access to roaster technology from several sources, including Chinese technology. Utilising the Noram technology agreement, Bateman was awarded the Engineering and Procurement (EP) contract for the Ambatovy Nickel Project, Sulphuric Acid Facilities in 2007. This is the first Greenfield sulphuric acid plant Bateman has designed for many years, producing a combined 5,500tpd, and is one of the largest sulphur burning acid plants in the world. This paper gives an overview of the sulphuric acid plant for the Ambatovy Nickel Project, advantages of Noram?s unique technology on offer, an overview of work conducted on a recent study of an pyrite roasting acid plants as well as a new technology currently being developed by Bateman for the direct combustion of solid sulphur to form sulphur dioxide.

The transport of fluid, heat ,and particles (bubbles and solid inclusions) in flowing molten steel is investigated in steel refining ladles, the continuous casting tundish, continuous casting mold and strand, and steel ingot casting processes. The two-equation k-?? model is used to simulate the turbulence. Multiphase fluid flow is numerically simulated with a Lagrangian-Eulerian approach, an Eularian-Eulerian approach and the Volume Of Fluid (VOF) method. The simulation can predict inclusion trajectories, inclusion removal fraction, free surface waves and other phenomena, which can be used to optimize these important metallurgical operations.

The aim of the hybrid location method is to improve seismic event locations by reducing the effects of errors in the wave velocity of ray paths between each event and each recording site. We report on further enhancements made to the hybrid location algorithm, which is based on the double-difference method developed by Spottiswoode and Milev1and Waldhauser and Ellsworth2. The term ?double-difference? refers to the residuals between the observed and theoretical travel-time differences and are obtained using either picked arrival times or various measures of time differences obtained from waveform pairs. These residuals are minimized for pairs of earthquakes at each station while linking together all observed event-station pairs. An important enhancement is that the double-difference term uses the median arrival time residuals to reduce the effect of outliers on the system of equations. In addition, the hybrid locations are further constrained by considering events of known locations, in this case along lines of development blasts. We relocated some 20 000 previously located seismic events in the Driefontein 5E area; 5 800 of these events were considered to have been development blasts and we constrained their locations to lie on the straight lines joining about 2 150 survey pegs from the mine?s database. Relocated events were shown to distribute more closely around advancing faces than had been the case before relocation. Wave velocities from the development blasts show evidence of anisotropy.

Carbon dioxide sequestration by conversion to carbonates has become a promising option for CO2 storage. Experiments were conducted to determine the feasibility of CO2 sequestration at ambient conditions using a Ca-rich industrial waste in a carbonate solution. The Ca-rich industrial waste used in this study was lignite fly ash. Fly ash was chosen because it is cheap, available near large CO2 point sources, already in powder form, and reactive due to amorphous properties. In the experimental set-up, CO2 absorption was inferred by monitoring feed and exhaust gas CO2 concentrations. The addition of an alkali to a fly ash-distilled water solution provided a 50% increase in CO2 absorption of the solution. Absorption time also increased by 50% compared to a fly ash-distilled water solution. TGA analysis was used to determine the extent of CO2 sequestration in the carbonate form. At a liquid to solid ratio of 20:1, the conversion of ?free? calcium to carbonates was 75%. A CO2 balance on the system concluded that at the current operating conditions 42% of the total CO2 fed to the system was sequestered in the carbonate form. SEM-EDS analysis of the fly ash particles before and after reaction with CO2 indicated that the carbonate compound being formed was calcium carbonate. The analysis identified rhomboidal structures on the surface of the fly ash particles after reaction with CO2, but not before. These rhomboids are characteristic of calcium carbonate formation and they had higher Ca, C, and O concentrations than the host spheres, suggesting calcium carbonate formation.

"The ability to adjust the speed of a SAG mill offers benefits to the process and to equipment maintenance. It can be provided with some slight effect on availability ranging from somewhat enhanced to somewhat reduced, depending on the particular equipment that is used. Several techniques have been developed for monitoring the magnitude of the contained charge, and several algorithms have been used to control mill feed rate and mill speed. The various benefits and the means by which they can be realized are examined and compared. Reasons for Variable SpeedProcess RequirementsThe recovery of minerals from ore is dependent on particle size and residence time in process. Separation in a given plant is most efficient at a particular rate and a particular size (e.g., 80% minus 200 mesh). If the particle size increases, less mineral will be liberated. If the particle size is significantly reduced, the process of choice may not be able to effect separation, and power, media, and maintenance costs would be increased.If a SAG mill-ball mill combination delivers the desired throughput at the correct size for efficient separation when processing ore of the design hardness, some adjustment must be made to maintain this condition when the ore changes. The processing of ore softer than design will result in overgrinding, unless:• the throughput is increased inversely to the change in hardness which lowers recovery by overloading the separation facilities;• or the SAG mill feed rate remains constant, but the speed is reduced to feed coarser material to the ball mill for finish grinding to the desired size.There is also the effect of changing milldiameter to consider. A nominal 36 ft diameter SAG mill will have an effective diameter of 35 ft with new liners and 35 ft 6 in. with worn liners. A mill designed to operate at 0.76 p.u. (per unit) of critical speed with new liners (9.84 rpm) will be changed to 0.765 p.u. with worn liners. If 0.76 p.u. is the desired value, the mill speed should be reduced to 9.77 rpm."

With construction of the first phase of the Automated People Mover (APM) Tunnels nearing completion, this paper will address how knowledge from recent Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) and New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) tunnel construction at the airport was used to refine the methodology for the next phase of tunnels currently in design. The benefits include an enhanced understanding of the ground conditions; allowing optimization of excavation sequences and support requirements; a more effective instrumentation and monitoring program; and improved construction details and related contract provisions.

"1.0 SummaryThe Pierina deposit was acquired in August 1996 when Barrick Gold Corporation purchased Arequipa Resources, a junior mining company with extensive land positions in Peru. At the time of acquisition, Arequipa had developed two exploration tunnels and drilled 9 exploration holes on the property. Metallurgical tests, conducted on samples taken from the tunnels and the exploration holes indicated that the ore was amenable to heap leaching. Barrick’s exploration team recognised from the outset, the potential of the mineralisation and convinced Barrick’s senior management that this was indeed a world class deposit that should be pursued. On November 25, 1998, the first dore was poured at Pierina, 27 months from the time of acquisition. During that period Barrick completed its exploration programme, prepared a development plan including capital and operating costs, production profiles and cash flow forecasts, and a schedule to develop a mine and construct a leach pad and gold recovery plant, including all supporting infrastructure. All permits and environmental approvals were obtained and all necessary land was acquired. The project was completed on schedule and under budget. This was the first greenfield mine development for Barrick outside of North America.This paper details, mainly, the research and development, engineering, construction and commissioning of the metallurgical process facilities.2.0 The Develonment ProgrammeImmediately after the acquisition, Barrick began the process of gathering information required to prepare a project development plan. Kilborn Engineering was retained to assemble all of the information collected and collated into a development plan document. This document was completed by June 16,1997. Conventional stoping in hard rock mining is largely considered an operational environment. This paper suggests that stoping falls within the realm of a project management environment typified by uncertainty, variation, and large numbers of interdependencies. Stoping was then equated to a micro-project with many simultaneous activities that had to be executed accurately using finite resources within limited shift durations in order to reach specific goals. Critical chain project management (CCPM) principles were applied to the stoping activities, and the results showed that the number of blasts per panel can be significantly increased by successfully moving the distribution of work as close as possible to the start of shift. Critical chain principles also assisted in facilitating re-focusing and teamwork among stoping crews as well as between day- and night-shift crews. The main recorded success was in managing inherent protective capacities/local contingencies/fat/buffers that are found in all projects. The impact on mine health and safety (MHS) was significant as individual operators and crews became convinced that they could perform all stoping tasks (activities) without compromising accuracy or speed.

WipFrag systems I and II have become the world standard in photoanalysis systems to measure fragmentation. Mines, quarries and excavating contractors can now easily measure blast results and track the progress of optimization efforts. This technology was developed and evolved to allow automatic measurements of the size distribution of patiicles on moving conveyors, in truck boxes and on crusher feeds. Production machinery can now be controlled by photoanalysis results and multiple cameras allow various locations to be monitored by a single system. Blast designs can be monitored on a shot by shot basis. Changes in delay times, explosives, patterns and hole sizes can be quickly evaluated. Along with this measurement capability has come a heightened awareness of the importance of “optimum size” and uniformity of particles for lowest cost production and material handling efficiency. In the past, savings in the “drill / blast” cycle of the operation were sometimes overshadowed by downstream production costs related to fragmentation. Now total production costs can be compared with fragmentation sizes which will immediately show the trend towards optimum size for economical production. No cost reduction program can be complete without this critical information.

The effect of oxalic acid, acetic acid, citric acid and EDTA on extraction of Cr (?) in soils contaminated by chromium- containing slag was investigated using a batch of incubation experiment. The results show that the pH value decreases more obvious with the increase of the amount of organic acid. The amount of Cr (?) extracted increases with increasing the amount of organic acid. When the ratio of organic acids to total Cr was 5:1, citric acid revealed the highest extraction effectiveness, followed by EDTA, oxalic acid and acetic acid, respectively. The amounts of Cr(?) extracted by citric acid, EDTA, oxalic acid and acetic acid increased by 439%, 244%, 215% and 162%.

This paper describes a design-build project for the construction of a tanker wharf for 150,000 dwt vessels. The tankers deliver oil from offshore oil fields to a Transshipment terminal on the south coast of Newfoundland. The project described is an expansion to a previously constructed facility, adding an additional berth. The first berth was designed conventionally as concrete structures supported on groups of independent, single piles. The second berth was awarded to Peter Kiewit Sons' Co. Ltd. based on an alternate design which utilized a "jacket" concept whereby prefabricated steel frames are placed on the seabed and serve as permanent templates and also give lateral support to the piles, thereby increasing their load capacity. This led to economies and time savings. Discussed herein is the design process and the field installation, covering the jackets, driven pipe piles, and the rock anchors.

Bacterial leaching of low grade quartz felspar porphyry copper ore was studied in large-scale laboratory percolation leaching columns.Limitations in the release of soluble copper showed up before fifty per cent recovery, due to occluding precipitates of iron oxides and hydroxides. Precipitates were removed by increasing the acidity of irrigation feed four-fold with respect to sulphuric acid. However, irrigation at low pH (pH 1.5) inhibited copper leaching. Resumption of bacterial leaching at pH2 was achieved by introducing a period of non-irrigation. The results suggest a 'direct' attack by bacteria on the chalcopyrite substrate rather than an 'indirect' ferric-leach mechanism.
