The Butte quartz monzonite is the host rock for early porphyry copper style mineralization and subsequent mesothermal-epithermal, enargite-gold style veining that transects the district. The east-west Anaconda system veins: including the Emma, Anaconda-Original, Syndicate, Badger-State, and Alice-Rainbow veins, each with strike lengths of over 12,000 feet and vertical continuity in excess of 4,500 feet, along with mining widths from 5 to 50 feet, are unique to Butte. The incredible dimensions and tenor of these veins have yet to be surpassed and Butte is still touted as being the “Richest Hill on Earth.” The Anaconda Company was formed in 1895 to develop underground copper reserves in the district and eventually consolidated all operations under one company. Production from underground mining continued through the mid-1970’s. Open pit mining in the Berkeley pit began in 1955 with the extraction of supergene ores, along with the remnants of deeper horsetail zones inaccessible to the underground mines. Operations in the Berkeley pit were suspended in mid-1982 because of the rejection of high arsenic, copper concentrates at major smelting facilities throughout the world. Bulk mining of porphyry style mineralization in the Continental pit began in January 1980 to supplement copper production while stripping “C” pushback in the Berkeley pit. The Anaconda Smelter closed in September 1980. A molybdenum circuit was added to the Butte Concentrator in 1981 and mining continued in the Continental pit to produce copper and molybdenum concentrates. A blend of Berkeley and Continental ores were processed to dilute penalty metals in the final concentrates marketed to toll smelters. All mining operations ceased mid-1983 when Anaconda closed the Continental pit and offered the property for sale. Montana Resources reopened the Continental pit in June 1986 to produce copper and molybdenum concentrates. Operations were suspended mid-2000, because of exorbitantly high power prices, but resumed in November 2003 with rising metal prices. Bulk open pit mining of the early porphyry style mineralization has sustained production over the past twenty years and mining is expected to continue in the Continental pit with favorable prices. Future mining will eventually develop a 500 million-ton geologic resource incorporated in a supergene enrichment blanket situated between the Berkeley pit and the Continental pit. Grades in this enrichment blanket range in the neighborhood of 0.5% copper.

"Excessive deformation of a cantilever sheetpile wall can occur due to dredging, excavation, backfilling, or long-term creep behavior of soil. A buttressing berm constructed in front of the wall can be considered as a mitigation technique to prevent or decrease the deformation by increasing the passive earth pressure and thus improving the wall stability. The effect of the buttressing berm on the stability and deformation of a sheetpile depends on the berm geometry (i.e., the thickness/depth and the width) as well as the properties of the sheetpile and the adjacent soils. A parametric study was conducted using a conventional limit equilibrium method. Design charts were prepared to evaluate the effect of a buttressing berm and the soil friction angle on the wall stability and deformation. These charts can be used as a tool by geotechnical engineers to make a quick estimate of the required size of a buttressing berm in case of calculated or unexpected excessive deformation of a sheetpile. An analysis of the effect of a buttressing berm on the stresses and deformation of a sheetpile was also compared with the results from finite element analysis. The results of this comparison are discussed.INTRODUCTIONCantilever sheetpile walls are commonly used to support excavations. Sheetpiles are hot rolled or cold formed sections of steel made to interlock with adjacent sections to form a continuous structure providing lateral support. Sheetpile walls can be cantilever walls or anchored with tiebacks. To construct a cantilever sheetpile wall, sheetpiles are driven by pile drivers or vibrated in to a design depth sufficiently below the depth of excavation. Excavation can then proceed in front of the sheetpile wall, which resists the earth pressure loading from behind the wall. The design depth and geometry of the sheetpile wall depend on the soil conditions, the depth of excavation, and the tolerable deformation. In certain cases, when a small buttress of soil can be left immediately adjacent to the sheetpile wall, the required depth or geometry of the sheetpile wall can be reduced or adjusted, which can significantly decrease the cost of procuring and installing the wall. Such a buttress can also serve as a short-term or long-term remedy in case of observed excessive deformation in a constructed wall. Traditional methods of analyzing the stability of a sheetpile wall do not account for the passive pressure effects of this small buttress. In this paper, a parametric study was performed for a variety of soil types and wall and buttress geometries by implementing traditional limit equilibrium methods in commercial software and design charts were created illustrating the effect of a buttressing berm on sheetpile deflection. Selected cases were then modeled in a finite element software to compare the results with the traditional limit equilibrium method. The resulting design charts can be used as a tool by geotechnical engineers looking to reduce the design geometry of a sheetpile wall or address observed excessive deformation in a constructed sheetpile wall."

Barrick Gold Corporation is proceeding with development of the Buzwagi Mine in the Lake Victoria Greenstone Belt District of Tanzania. The Buzwagi orebody occurs in the Nzega Shear zone within the Greenstone Belt and is hosted in a K-Feldspar rich granite in contact with mafic volcanic. The orebody presents 2.6 M ounces in 41 Mt of reserves, at 2.0 g/t. Over the ten year mine life, total material movement will be 261 Mt. The feasibility study was completed in 2006 and presented several technical challenges. Two principle challenges are grade control and the impact of dilution on the economic viability of the project. The principle challenges for grade control will be quality control and quality assurance in the sampling of the massive coarse grained granite, which comprises 70 per cent of the deposit. The principle challenge with dilution will be with the selective mining of the narrower mineralised zones contained within the mafic volcanics. This paper will focus on the mine planning methodology which has been applied including selective mine unit (SMU) and dilution estimation, net smelter revenue (NSR) calculation and the effects of cut-off grades to the project economics and mine schedule.

The two contracts of the Big Walnut Augmentation/Rickenbacker Interceptor(BWARI) sewer project for the City of Columbus, Ohio total nearly 35,000 feet of 14and 12-foot diameter tunnel. EPB TBMs will install precast concrete segmental lining through difficult glacial soils ranging from clean granular to hard till with high groundwater and boulders, crossing roads, railroads, and a large stream. Construction of 12 shafts and a large Interconnect Structure involving major ground stabilization work is required. The paper will review design of major project elements and present an update on construction progress.

Members: A person to be eligible for election or transfer into the class of Member must be at least 27 years of age and must have had at least six years' employment in the practice of engineering, mining, geology, metallurgy, or chemistry, during at least three years of which he must have held positions of responsibility in one or more of these fields. This shall not apply to Rocky Mountain members. SEC. 3. Honorary Members: Each candidate for Honorary Membership must be recommended by at least ten Members and must be elected by ballot at a meeting of the Board of Directors by the unanimous vote of the Directors present; provided, however, that the number of Honorary Members shall at no time exceed twenty. Such election shall automatically act as a transfer of such member from any other class of membership to which he may belong. SEC. 4. At all other meetings of the Institute the President, or, in his absence, one of the Vice-Presidents, shall preside. If none of these be present the meeting shall elect a Chairman. II. ORDER OF BUSINESS. At each business meeting of the Institute the order of business shall be as - follows : 1. Reading of minutes-of preceding meeting. 2. Report of the President. 3. Report of the Treasurer. 4. Report of the. Secretary. 5. Election of Directors. 6. Reports of Standing Committees. 7. Reports of Special Committees. 8. Special Orders. 9. Miscellaneous business. This order of business may be changed at any meeting, by a vote of a majority of the Members and Associates present. At all sessions of the Institute, other than business meetings, the order of pro¬ceedings and the time of adjournment shall rest in the discretion of the presiding officer. III. SECRETARY OF THE INSTITUTE. The Secretary shall keep a record of the proceedings of all meetings of the Institute. He shall be custodian of the corporate seal, of the minute books, and of all legal documents belonging to the Institute. He shall have charge, on behalf of the Institute, of all correspondence except such as pertains directly to the office of the Treasurer. He shall notify all Officers and Directors and all members of committees of their election and appointment; shall issue notices of all meetings of the Board, and of the annual and other business meetings of the Institute; and shall; in calling, special meetings of the Directors, specify the objects of such meetings. He shall act as clerk at all the meetings of the Board of Directors and at all meetings of the Institute. The Secretary shall be custodian of all technical or scientific papers submitted to the Institute for its consideration, shall have general charge and supervision of the editing and proof-reading of all material published by the Institute, and of the distribution thereof, and be ex officer Chairman of the Committee on Publications. Sec. 1. The membership of the Institute shall comprise six classes, namely: 1. Members; 2. Honorary Members; 3. Senior Members; 4. Associates; 5. Junior Members; 6. Rocky Mountain Members. All shall be equally entitled to the privileges of membership, excepting that no member of any class whom residence shall be outside of the United States of America, except those residing in Mexico and Canada, shall be entitled to vote. SEC. 2. Members: A person to be eligible for election or transfer into the claw of Member must be at least 27 years of age and must have had at least six years' employment in the practice of engineering, mining, geology, metallurgy, or chemistry, during at least three years of which he must have held positions of responsibility in one or more of these fields. This shall not apply to Rocky Mountain members.
