The City of Richmond, in an effort to improve sewage treatment facilities, designed an invert syphon to cross the James River at Fulton Bottom. The design criteria called for installation of two 36-inch pipe' lines at an elevation of -35 with the mean water level being at elevation 00. This paper discusses the actual method of construction used to blast the river bottom. Choice of excavation equipment, nature of the river, as well as the geological structure, were taken into consideration.

The mechanism of blasting and the effect that blasting has on rock properties including the generation of new cracks and the opening of existing joints is discussed and compared with changes in seismic velocities. .Knowing the extent of blast induced damage and the overall stable slope angle it is shown that it is possible to design blasting so as not to induce any damage behind the toe of the blast area. Practical methods of blasting to meet this criterion and the results of these blasts are then discussed.

Until 1990, all production of asbestos ore at Cassiar was by open-pit methods. With the impending exhaustion of open-pit reserves, a decision was made in February 1988 to continue mining underground, using the block-caving technique.

Blasting is an essentially violent process aimed to disrupt and loosen rock for productive excavation. Some dilution of any ore present is the inevitable result. This makes blasting a dirty word to most geologists, particularly in narrow vein gold mines. A 1% increase in gold recovery may be worth $1 M extra revenue to a large mine.

Electronic detonators are increasingly being used in today’s blasting in quarries, seismic, surface and underground mines. Electronic detonators offer several distinctive features over electric and non-el (shock tube) detonators including better timing accuracy resulting in excellent fragmentation and vibration control, field programmability and digital safety means. Because of the prerequisite electrical communications between the electronic detonators and the blasting machine, the layout or hook-up of these detonators can play an important role in obtaining the communication fidelity.

Low grade surface gold mining at the Acacia Resources, Union Reefs Gold Mine in Australia's Northern Territory, involves the excavation of benches in three slices after blasting. Blast patterns span zones of high and low grade ore, as well as zones of waste, and selective excavation is required in order to maintain economical head grades for the carbon-in-leach processing plant.

A typical rural house surrounded by a surface coal mine was instrumented in 2008. Information regarding ground vibration, airblast, and sounds inside the house was collected. Previous publications have included conclusions about this data with regard to blasting source (far-field or near-field) and results as to how the residents experience the blast were made. Several events were also recorded that were not related to blasting due to the nature of the trigger system. The trigger of the monitoring system was attached to one of the mid walls of the house, thus other normal daily events produced vibration levels significant enough to trigger the monitoring system.

Hong Kong is one of the most rapidly developing cities in the world. With constant population growth and limited opportunities for space, the development of a fast and effective underground public transportation network is essential. Hong Kong’s Mass Transit Railway (MTR) Corporation is currently undertaking several large underground expansions to its existing network. Much of the excavation will be carried out using the drill and blast excavation method.Drill and blast excavation is common in Hong Kong and with the continued development of underground infrastructure the use of the drill and blast excavation method will increase. Although an effective method of excavation, the blasting vibrations caused during construction can have an adverse impact on surrounding structures and impose disruption on the local community.In order to minimise the risks associated with blasting vibrations, and to demonstrate that the impact on local stakeholders will remain within acceptable limits, it is generally necessary for a contractor to submit a blasting assessment report for approval by government authorities before blasting may commence.Continued increases in population density will force more infrastructure to be constructed underground. Tunnels and caverns are increasingly excavated in closer proximity to critical sensitive receivers. This leads to greater potential impacts on the community, tightening constraints on contractors and a higher level of confidence required for approval authorities. Finding a balance between the needs of the community and rising construction costs becomes more challenging.This paper presents a case study on how the blasting assessment report process has been successfully implemented for a major MTR project situated in a densely developed area of Hong Kong. It describes several methods of assessing blasting vibration impacts, innovative uses of blasting for excavation and the mitigation measures employed to provide the best outcome for all project stakeholders.CITATION:Bedford, N and Muir, J W, 2014. In many areas of the eastern United States, especially in the Midwest, past mining activities have left large and extensive underground openings. Now, renewed mining is occurring in such areas in surface pits. Also, construction blasting often occurs in rock over such old openings. Within the last fifteen years, some attention has been given to the interaction between surface blasting and underground cavities; concern has been expressed about the possible changes in vibrations transmitted through areas underlain by old mine workings (Siskind, Stachura and Nutting 1987). Previous studies also had indicated that underground openings could influence transmission of surface mine blast vibrations (see, for example, Woodward-Clyde Consultants 1977). The principal concern is that underground openings under surface blasting may intensify low-frequency vibrations. If such intensification occurs, use of available equations to predict peak particle velocities and to design blasting patterns and select blasting parameters could lead to possibly damaging ground shaking.

The City of Fort Myers needed to replace a 40-year old 42-inch storm sewer line in downtown Fort Myers with a new 54-inch line to accommodate population growth. The old line had to be kept operational while a new line was installed. The contractor spent two months using a drop ball, a hoe ram, and large rippers trying to break the three to four feet of rock that needed to be removed to accmmodate the new pipe. Mechanical trenching was considered but was proven to be overly expensive. On very short notice, Ireco of Florida was asked to design and execute a blasting procedure that would allow this project to proceed. Nearby buildings were over 80 years old, three of them containing antique shops specializing in glass antiquities with attorney offices above them. High water table compounded problem with a 20-year old steel water main and clay drainage pipe 15 feet frcan the new sewer line. Holes had to be drilled within six inches of the edge of the existing pipe to four feet below the pipe on either side of the pipe and blasted. No interruption in the sewer line flow was to be tolerated.

Companhia Vale do Rio Dote - CVRD is the largest mining company in Brazil and the largest iron ore producer in the world. Serra Geral Mine (SGM) is located at Iron Quadrangle of the State of Minas Gerais, approximately 80 kilometers from Belo Horizonte. Hematite and Itabirite are the two main minerals. A blasting with a spherical charge has been introduced at Serra Geral Mine, an iron ore producer in Brazil, belongs to the CVRD (51%) Kawasaki Steel Corporation (24.5%) others (24.5%), in order to improve fragmentation, as well, load, transportation and crushing productivity. This paper will present the results of a successful blast design with a spherical charge carried out by Serra Geral Mine, the Department of Mining Engineering at Escola de Minas - Federal University of Ouro Preto-UFOP associated to a Blasting Engineering Consultant. The results obtained in the field tests and how it was possible to increase the blast pattern in 53%, which allowed one reduction around 31% in the cost of blasting operation in the Serra Geral Mine, will be discussed in details.

In the period of time allotted to this paper, an attempt will be made to cover a great deal of territory, figuratively speaking, as far as our experience with ammonium nitrate is concerned. In giving this subject the "broad-brush" treatment, it will be necessary to generalize on the major points which at the same time will permit me to avoid, to a great extent, any involvement in the purely technical and theoretical aspects of blasting. The practice of theorizing before a new idea is tried has practically been discontinued in our organization simply because experience has shown that, almost without exception, theories have fallen aside as some new development takes its place. In regard to blasting, logic and experience seem to have little place in this phase of quarry operations. As the use of low cost blasting agents was introduced in our operating practice, a man who had no previous experience in the field of blasting but with sound knowledge in safety procedures was given the responsibility of supervising the drilling and blasting operations. A total lack of experience is not ordinarily recommended as a prerequisite to assuming the responsibilities of a supervisory position. However, in this case it was obviously a wise decision because there were no pre-conceived ideas as to what techniques would or would not be successful.

Mixtures of prilled ANFO and 0,5 - 3 mm polystyrene balls are interesting substitutes to the tube charges or other types of reduced explosives or detonation fuses. Experiments have shown detonation ability even of a mixture of 95% bolt polystyrene balls and 5% ANFO. The gas and shock energy in the mixtures decrease proportional with the content of polystyrene. The detonation velocity shows higher values than expected for mixtures with more than 50% (vol.) ANFO.

The conversion to the use of commercial grade ammonium nitrate (CGAN) for use in blasting at the Utah Copper Pit of the Kennecott Copper Corporation has presented unique problems for the Drilling and Blasting Department, In order to better understand these problems, a' picture of the Bingham Pit might be helpful. Some quarter of a million tons of ore and waste must be blasted daily in order to keep thirty-eight electric shovels operating. All material is blasted by "toe holes" of 24 to 28 feet in depth, drilled from prepared drill grades and sloped so as to bottom approximately 5 feet below the bench level. Horizontal spacing of these holes averages 22 feet, with exceptions being made where faults occur in the bank. These "toe holes" are drilled by 4-inch drifter machines, mounted on self-contained mobile drill units using .3-inch starter bits and bottoming at a minimum of 2 1/2 inches in diameter, "Toe-hole" drilling amounts to about two-thirds of the total drilling. In the higher bank sections of the Mine and wherever necessary, single rows of "down holes" are drilled to 28 feet in depth and spaced, on the average 23 feet apart. These holes are also drilled by a mobile drill. "Down hole" drilling amounts to about one-third of the total drilling.

The National Lead Company operates its MacI tyre Development at Tahawus, New York for the production of ilmenite and. magnetite. The heavy ore of titanium and iron is mined from the open pit mine at an average rate of 7,000 tons per day, and the development waste is removed at an average rate of 10,000 tons per day. The mine working benches are spaced, at 35-foot vertical intervals, and 6 ½ inch blast holes are drilled 39-feet deep with 18-foot burden and spacing by down-the-hole drills. Waste is loaded with a 6 yeard shovel and ore with 2 ½ yard shovels into 22-ton rear dump trucks. A good account of the history of MacIntyre drilling and. blasting was presented to this assembly two years ago, by F. R. Jones. (1) Most of the blasting since the start of the mine in 1941 was done with 90% gelatin dynamite until 1955, when relatively insensitive canned blasting agents were adopted.. In 1956, 9-inch blast holes drilled with down-the-hole drills. In 1956, also, the first experimental trials of prilled ammonium nitrate fertilizer and fuel oil (hereafter called fertilizer) was made following the lead of Cleveland-Cliffs operations in the Hibbing district. Since that trial did not, as some local skeptics predicted, make grass grown on the bluff, but resulted in a well-broken shot, further tests were conducted in dry holes. I Observations of those tests indicated that the fertilizer did its share of the work. If anything, it produced better fragmentation than the normal load di in neighboring wet holes.

Recycling oil in this way will result in a cost savings for the minesite as well ashaving a positive environmental effect The petition has met the approval of the Bureau of LandManagement, the Nevada Department of Environmental Protection, and has received tentative approval from the Mine Safety and Health Administration."
