Introduction Ventilation engineers have always felt somewhat uneasy when, in the normal course of their work, they are forced to consider the flow in any mine entry as "wholly rough." Under such conditions in pipes, friction factor is no longer a function of Reynolds' number. This assumption serves to simplify the problem and overcome an evident lack of information concerning the variability of K-factors. During the summer of 1985, a unique opportunity to investigate the reaction of friction factor to changing flow rates presented itself. A Utah coal mine was temporarily directing a substantial airflow through a single entry. By regulating the quantity, it would be possible to obtain a wide range of Reynolds' numbers in an entry composed of two distinct coal thicknesses. This paper describes the conducted study. The theory covering basic fluid flows in pipes that led to the questioning of constant K-factor is presented first. Experimental procedures are then described, including the use of a view camera in determining entry area and perimeter. Finally, a discussion of the observed variations in friction factor versus Reynolds' number is given. Changes of 34% and 45% in K-factor were seen in this study for the two entry heights. The implications of ignoring the relationship in this case and a call for an expanded research effort are also presented. Theory Since a gas is a fluid, the general principles of fluid mechanics are equally applicable to airflow in a mine entry as they are to the flow of water in a pipe. The Darcy equation is, therefore, equally applicable to pressure drop calculations in both situations. This famous formula was originally derived for use in circular cross sections and may be modified for any other shape by the use of hydraulic radius (defined as the area divided by the "wetted" perimeter). The Darcy equation relates the physical parameters of the pipe (diameter, length, and resistance to flow) and fluid velocity to the energy needed to create the flow. A study by Nikuradse (1933) brought to light the suspected dependency of the friction factor term in the Darcy equation upon Reynolds' number. By performing a large number of laboratory experiments, he established some basic concepts upon which other researchers built. Chief among these contributors was Colebrook (1939). Using commercial-grade pipe, he established an empirical relationship between Darcy's friction factor and Reynolds' number that is still in use today. If Colebrook's system of equations is plotted on log-log paper (as was done by Moody, 1944), the curves have some very distinct features. Of importance to the subject at hand is the relative response of friction factor to Reynolds' number at a given relative roughness. Simply stated, a pipe can appear to be either smooth or rough, depending on the flow conditions. As the Reynolds' number increases, the friction factor decreases at a decreasing rate until it becomes nearly a constant value. At this point, the flow is said to be "wholly rough." It is upon this condition that many traditional ventilation solution methods depend. For calculating pressure drops in a mine entry, Atkinson's equation is much more popular than the Darcy equation. Both of these formulas describe the same phenomenon and so have similar forms and functions. The K-factor in the Atkinson equation is equivalent to the Darcy friction factor and can be related by simply changing units, equating the pressure drops, and canceling like terms. A generalized form of this relationship is presented below as equation 1. K = yf/28,800g = [q]f/28,800 (1) where K is Atkinson's friction factor in kg/m3 (lb - min2/ft4), Y is the specific volume in Nt/m3 (lb per cu ft), p is the fluid density in kg/m3 (slugs per cu ft), g is the acceleration due to gravity (9.8 m/s2 or 32.2 fpsz), and f is Darcy's friction factor, which is unitless. The objective behind Eq. 1 is to show the strong correlation between K and f. Since these two quantities differ only by a constant (q]/28,000), the assumed independence of K-factor and Reynolds' number is suspect in light of the known response of f. Unfortunately, the formulation does not provide information concerning the actual relationship, as entry geometry likely plays a major role in the response curve. Only an indirect indication that such a relationship might exist is provided. Previous work on this subject was performed by Thomas Falkie (1958). The study involved a laboratory model composed of sections of straight, steel duct and a range of Reynolds' numbers from 15,610 to 137,200. Results from this work show a variation in friction factor with Reynolds' number in much the same way as it was found to vary in pipes. Over the range of velocities examined, a decrease of approximately 38% in K-factor was observed. This previous experience provides additional incentives to investigate the phenomenon under field conditions. Past model studies done at the University of Utah by Ozukurt (1945), Biron (1944), and Greenhalgh (1942) present similar evidence of this variability. Biology opens a new frontier for the mining industry. With rising environmental concerns, the need to couple conventional chemical and physical technologies with sustainable approaches is pressing. At Allonnia, we harness microbial processes to create innovative and environmentally responsible technologies with broad applications. The native microbial community (microbiome) remains largely unexplored at most mining sites, unlike the geochemical environment. The exploration of complex biological reactions that could transform mining technology is just starting and holds vast possibilities, spanning bio-cementation, carbon sequestration, ore beneficiation, water mitigation, bioleaching, metals recovery, and more. Allonnia has collected samples from mine sites in Australia, Africa, and North America to characterize the microbiome and uncover the genetic potential present in mineral-rich environments. We are evaluating microbial metabolites that selectively solubilize gangue from various ores. In addition, biological reactions hold promise as tailings stabilizers. Our early efforts illustrate exciting prospects for harnessing biology’s potential in mining.

A program of geological research in support of mineral exploration efforts is outlined. Specific goals are stated, approaches to accomplish their attainment are described, and the type of useful results to be expected are outlined. Because mineral exploration or prospecting has intensely practical goals, research in support of it must be applied research, applied to the problem of maintaining or increasing the discovery rate of the exploration effort. To attain research goals, attention to personnel selection, group structure, and program are critically important, and in about that order. A large percentage of the professional personnel should have had experience in mining geology or mineral exploration, and they all should be prospector-oriented. Structuring in the group should be at a minimum, with wide allowance for the kind of independent research which is essential to the nurturing of on-target creativity. The program should be field-oriented, and it should include a wide representation of those subdisciplines of geology which are applicable to mineral exploration. The types of results to be anticipated include improved or new conceptual models for various types of orebodies and their settings from which new ore guides can be derived, new exploration techniques, and the development of a knowledge bank for various aspects of the exploration effort.

Measuring the specific gravity of a pulp in concentrating plants is a relative, y simple procedure, but the desired accuracy is often difficult to attain. Many plants use the system of weighing a known volume of the pulp on a scale. In many cases, this method is quite accurate, but obtaining a true sample presents quite a problem. This is especially true when the pulp tends to froth, the solids settle rapidly, or the flow is fast at the point of sampling. There is also the problem of the operator neglecting to take the sample because of duties elsewhere, or, if everything Is apparently running smoothly, he assumes the pulp density is also all right. In 1952, the Pine Creek plant of Union Carbide Nuclear Company began working on a better method for measuring and controlling pulp density. After an extensive investigation of different methods for measuring the specific gravity of moving pulps, the Research Department decided that the bubble tube method appeared to be the simplest and most promising for our applications. It consists of two bubble tubes, of different lengths, submersed in a pulp. Low pressure air is supplied to, the two tubes through sight bubblers to maintain approximately equal volume of air to each bubble tube. The bubble tubes are also connected to a differential manometer, one to each side. Therefore, knowing the vertical distance between the outlets of the bubble tubes, the manometere can be calibrated to measure directly the specific gravity of the pulp. (Figure No. 1 illustrates this model.)

In efforts to improve ingress/egress from the existing subway platforms in PATH’s Exchange Place Station, a new 18-foot horseshoe cross-passage tunnel was constructed by Walsh Construction who retained Kilduff Underground Engineering for design of the initial support system and to install and maintain geotechnical instrumentation. The project presented some unique challenges as a result of the proximity to pedestrians on the platform. PATH service remained uninterrupted, limiting the Contractor to mechanical means of excavation to advance the heading. The logistics proved very challenging for the approximate 100-foot-long tunnel excavated in soft Manhattan Schist. This paper will present the design and construction challenges for the project.

The problem of assessing uncertainty in grade estimates has been a topic of research and debate since kriging was first introduced. Use of the kriging variance was originally touted as all that was necessary in order to produce confidence limits for grade estimates. Since then the prudence of using the kriging variance for confidence interval estimation has been questioned, and techniques such as the jackknife and conditional simulation have been proposed to develop "true" interval estimates. This paper compares the differences between interval estimates produced by the three methods and makes conclusions about the performance of confidence intervals produced by the different methods.

This paper will discuss bentonite deposits in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. The discussion will be re¬stricted to a review of the so-called calcium or non-swelling bentonites. In other words the exchangeable cation is calcium. The term "bentonite" is used to describe a clay material, composed essentially of the clay mineral montmorillonite. In addition, bentonites may contain various impurities such as glass shards, feldspar, quartz, muscovite and biotite mica, glauconite, pyrite, hydrated iron oxide, gypsum, organic material, etc, Most of the southern calcium bentonites contain at least 70% montmorillonite, Bentonite as mined may range in color from dark grayish greens through various shades of grays, reds, yellows and browns to nearly white. It is normally massive and breaks with a conchoidal fracture. When air dried, closely spaced shrinkage fractures occur. Moist bentonite has a soapy feel, with little or no obvious "grit". Bentonite deposits were first discovered in Mississippi about 1925, in southern Monroe County. During the thirties and early 1940's, deposits were identified in Alabama, Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana. Perhaps the earliest production of southern bentonite was from a deposit in the valley of the Tombigdee River, south of Jackson, Alabama in 1936. Production commenced in Mississippi during the latter part of 1938 at Pontotoc. The growth and development of the bentonite industry in the southern United States owes its beginning to three events. The world’s mining industry has a fleet of over 400 large draglines moving billions of tons of material annually. The most efficient use of this equipment resource will provide a competitive advantage to those companies who are committed to improving performance. A dragline monitoring system is a requirement for optimum operations. The monitor reports the facts. Focused actions can change the facts and create improved performance. Analyzing monitor data to build knowledge and create understanding is a beginning. Understanding the key productivity indicators for dragline operations and an effective benchmarking process are the basis for improvement. There is overwhelming evidence that adopting new technologies and concepts including AC drive technology can and will bring about a step change in dragline operating cost with improved production performance.STATE OF THE MINING INDUSTRY A high altitude review of the state of the mining industry provided by a study of multifactor productivity shows a continuation of lower and lower output year on year for the capital and labor inputs applied. The story is sadly similar for both U.S. mining and the Australian mining sector. In fact, according to PwC analysts the worlds mining equipment productivity has declined 20% over the past seven years. (Lumley, 2014) Although the reasons for the continuing decline in mining productivity are varied, the need for improvement is clear. The world’s mining industry fleet of well over 400 large draglines moves billions of tons of overburden and ore (phosphate, limestone, etc.) annually.This discussion will review a few of the tools available for improved productivity in dragline operations."

Computer assisted mine planning and design applications are routinely used by many Australian mining companies, However, the design process requires human expertise to recognize and evaluate the potential pitfalls. This paper introduces the application of a commercial optimization software (WHITTLE 4D) for strategic planning of an open pit mine in Western Australia. The authors present their experience in intelligent application of the optimization program while incorporating many technical and nontechnical obstacles. This paper provides some guidelines on how to apply the optimization software without loosing sight of practicalities. Moreover, this paper also shows how to build project evaluation guidelines for non-experts.

The Electroslurry TM electrowinning concept has been incorporated into a process flowsheet for recovering copper from smelter flue dusts. The process has averaged 96% recovery of the copper as high-grade electrowon while at the same time removing a majority of the impurities that degrade drawn copper as a result of recycling flue dust and liberator cathodes: The dust is processed through several stages consisting of leaching, copper precipitation, Electroslurry TM electrowinning and waste liquor treatment. The process may be integrated into a smelter operation and become an effective and feasible means of maintaining good product purity.

The acoustic emission (AE) technology has a high potential for flow characterization in hydraulic transport processes. For instance, in deep-sea mining, there are applications where manganese nodules are transported from the bottom of the sea to the surface or a transport ship. Here, an AE-based flow characterization system plays an important role to avoid the transport of non-related objects. However, the structural materials for the components of this system must be carefully selected to ensure resistance against corrosion and a good AE signal transmission. Therefore, in this experimental study, we evaluated the AE attenuation behavior of four different materials that can be employed in marine environments due to their properties. The results were obtained using thin plates and they indicate which materials have the highest and lowest attenuations. Moreover, we provide insights regarding the different wave modes that propagate on the plates.

Flotation collectors play a crucial role in mineral flotation by selectively adhering to mineral surfaces and aiding in their separation from gangue material. They are heteropolar molecules, as defined by Sutherland and Wark (1955), featuring non-polar hydrocarbon chains and polar groups interacting with mineral surfaces to induce hydrophobicity selectively. The importance of collectors in mineral processing, as underscored by Lotter and Bradshaw (2010), lies in their ability to enhance recovery rates and improve selectivity, thereby optimizing the extraction of valuable minerals from complex ores. Collectors are classified based on their mechanism of action, as proposed by Laskowski (2010). This classification categorizes collectors into three groups: water-soluble compounds, water-insoluble “oily” collectors, and water-insoluble amphipathic compounds forming molecular films at the water/gas interface. This complements the chemical structure-based classification by Sutherland and Wark (1955) and Suoninen and Laajalehto (1993), offering a comprehensive understanding of collector diversity in flotation systems. Collector selection is an iterative process crucial for optimizing mineral processing efficiency, as emphasized by Lotter and Bradshaw (2010). Understanding the significance of collector mixing or synergy outcomes is paramount for enhancing mineral flotation efficiency and sustainability. Taguta, O’Connor, and McFadzean (2018) demonstrate that mixed collector systems enhance interaction enthalpies and microflotation recoveries, indicating improved performance. McFadzean, Castelyn, and O’Connor (2012), along with Critchley and Riaz (1991), delve into investigating synergistic interactions between collectors, offering insights for strategic selection. Observations from the study of collector synergy, as noted by Wakamatsu et al. (1980), reveal nuanced relationships surpassing individual collector behaviors. The methodology outlined in this paper provides valuable guidance for classifying and selecting collectors based on specific application needs, while also suggesting the potential for synergistically improving recovery across fine, intermediate, and coarse particles.

The paper’s intent is to evaluate pumpable foamed cementitious mine seal material by determining the shear strength of a generic foamed cement in the laboratory. The tests were conducted on three scales: small-size specimens, consisting of cylinders 4 in. in diameter or 3-in. prisms; double shear medium- size specimens, measuring 13 in. by 10 in.; and large-size specimens, measuring 6 ft by 4 ft by 4 ft. The small-specimen shear tests resulted in average peak and residual shear strengths of 128 psi and 56 psi, respectively. These values are fairly consistent with published shear strengths of foamed cementitious material. However, the other two types of shear tests did not achieve the shear strength of a typical pumpable foamed cementitous mine seal material. Based on the test results, the paper concluded that the structural analysis of cement foam seals should be based on their residual shear strengths, approximately 20 psi, determined from small laboratory-scale tests of the cement foam/concrete or rock interface, and not be based on their peak strengths.

Immediate detection of methane buildup or of sudden liberation of large quantities of methane in the face area is essential to avert disasters in coal mines. Proper timely detection and handling of methane have always presented problems in extremely gassy mines, and these problems have been magnified by present accelerated mining methods. Strict rules and regulations have been established by coal-mining companies, States, and the Federal Government, which provide for periodic inspections for methane in face areas when electrical equipment is working. Other provisions require the operator' to shut down electrical face equipment and change or adjust ventilation when more than 1.0 percent of methane is detected. Nevertheless, human failure to detect such conditions has been responsible for numerous ignitions arid explosions Recognizing this fact, Marling J. Ankeny, former Director of the Bureau of Mines, proposed in 1958 the development of an automatic methane-monitoring device. He envisioned such a device as being entirely dependable, capable of giving a warning when a predetermined concentration of methane in air is reached, and capable of deenergizing the equipment and rendering it inoperative when a dangerous concentration of methane is present in the air. Such a device has been developed by the Bureau of Mines Health and Safety Research and Testing Center in Pittsburgh, Pa.

The historic Getchell property, near Golconda, NV, is being mined from the Getchell Main Under- ground workings, a footwall extension of the Getchell open-pit deposits along the Getchell fault. Drift-and-fill techniques are used to extract the ore through a ramp access. The adjacent Turquoise Ridge deposit is under development by two vertical shafts. These two mines will continue to provide feed to the Getchell's 2.9 ktld (3,200 stpd) mill/autoclave circuit. This will take Getchell Gold from its current production rate of 6.2 t/a (200,000 oz/year) to more than 12.4 t/a (400,000 oz/year) by 1999.

Effective management of ore loss and dilution is essential for successful grade control and short-term mine planning due to their significant impact on the economic, environmental and technical aspects of openpit mining operations. Factors influencing ore loss and dilution fall into two categories: (1) controllable factors, like mine equipment selectivity and blast design, and (2) uncontrollable factors, such as spatial heterogeneity of ore and waste blocks on a bench. This paper focuses on the second category by applying spatial entropy concept to capture heterogeneity at the scale of selective mining units. In this paper, global spatial entropy is used to assess the impact of spatial heterogeneity between ore and waste blocks on the magnitude of ore loss and dilution, while the local spatial entropy can guide the allocation of blast movement monitoring balls preblast. High values of the global spatial entropy indicate increasing potential of ore loss and dilution, which reduce profit. Furthermore, through a number of case studies, the study investigates the relationship between spatial entropy, cutoff grades, blast movement, dig-limits optimization model running time, and profit. The results show that changes in cutoff grade and blast movement can significantly affect spatial entropy post-blasting and increase ore loss, dilution and profit reduction, revealing the need for controlled blasting at specific bench sections. Additionally, the results demonstrate an exponential increase in profit reduction due to ore loss and dilution with a rising global spatial entropy

Federally owned mineral deposits generally fall into one of three categories: (1) minerals locatable under the General Mining Law of 1872; (2) minerals leasable under the Mineral Leasing kt of 1920; and (3) minerals salable under the Materials Act of 1947. Unlike valuable deposits of gold, silver, copper, iron, lead, etc., which may be locatable, industrial minerals are acquired through a variety of methods depending on use, composition, and date of acquisition. Table 1 may be used to establish the method of acquisition for most industrial minerals.

The Upper Hidden Basin Diversion (UHBD) tunnel was driven approximately 1.2 miles by the drill-and-blast method primarily through massive granite bedrock geology for the Kodiak Electric Association, Inc. (KEA) in Kodiak, Alaska. The tunnel was driven from both portals with a constant 11-ft straight-leg horseshoe cross-section. The design and construction of the tunnel was driven by logistics and weather conditions due to its remote location and the rugged terrain of the project setting. This paper will discuss the successful completion of a challenging project over a ve-year period from preliminary planning through the design and construction phases.

The Combined Sewage Storage Tunnel (CSST) is part of the Ottawa River Action Plan and will greatly reduce the frequency of sewage overflows into the Ottawa River during storms. The project consists of the design and construction of two TBM tunnels running EastWest (EWT) and NorthSouth (NST) along 6.2 km in total, and multiple shafts and support buildings. Contractor Dragados Tomlinson JV (DTJV) was awarded the 169 million CAD construction contract in 2016 and the CSST will be in operation in 2020. Dr. Sauer & Partners (DSP), supported by Intecsa-Inarsa, was responsible for the detailed design of the precast concrete tunnel lining as well as the geotechnical risk management program. This paper addresses TBM selection, critical tunnel sections, geotechnical risk management and rock mass grouting as a geotechnical risk mitigation measure. Successful collaboration of Owner, Owner’s Engineer, Contractor and Contractor’s Engineer led to a safe and cost-effective design and construction
